  • Wheresmebus 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to see Orkney We booked for the Orkney Day Tour having picked up a leaflet at a previous stop on our tour of the Far North. This is an excellent way of seeing the islands, we would never have been able to do it under our own steam. Obviously weather conditions will influence the whole experience, we watched the forecasts closely before picking a day, and were not disappointed with our tour. The Pentland Venture ferry is a little basic, but the voyage is only 40 min. The coach(es) were excellent and modern. The itinerary covered most significant attractions on the islands. Our stop at Kirkwall was long enough to grab lunch, though we found Stromness with its harbour and narrow streets to be more attractive. The stops to visit Skara Brae and the Ring of Brogdar were just about sufficient, though we thought the Italian PoW Chapel to be more worth noting rather than actually visiting. This is a great way to visit Orkney if you’re on a tour schedule. Recommended. Parking at John o Groats is in the ferry companies own area and is free, plenty of room for motorhomes. • Coolerweather 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful experience even though it was cold and raining The ferry ride over to the Orkney Islands was great. The bus tour by Darren was informative and fun. Even though it was cold and raining, Darren kept us engaged and interested. The scenery was beautiful. The ferry ride back was an adventure. The waves were higher and the wind was stronger. I would recommend this trip. Read more Written 26 September 2023
  • jfjackson 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Day Out on Orkneys We found a leaflet for this trip purely by chance while staying overnight in Ullapool. We had considered a trip independently, but would never have packed as much in, or seen so much if we had. The boat journey was a little choppy, given mid September, the last trips of the season. Coaches were waiting for us on arrival at Burwick and off we went. We took in Churchill Barriers, saw Scapa Flow, the Italian Chapel, had time in Kirkwall & Stromnees, visited Skara Brae & Ring of Brodgar. Hectic, but worth it. Our driver/guide was very entertaining, with a good sense of humour. Full of fascinating stories, introducing us to the Orkney pigs who have their own Facebook page; & most importantly pointing out toilet facilities. Well worth the money, a really lovely day. • N2203FNnatalieb 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic day trip! Booking to take this day trip to the Orkney mainland, we were looking forward to seeing something different. The ferry across allowed to see some wildlife which gave us all some pleasure. Once landed and on our coach, from the moment Paul (our driver) introduced himself in a strong south London accent, our journey set off with a enjoyable patter and very interesting information. As this was our first coach trip, the pace seemed a little fast for us at times, but nevertheless it was worth it for all the places we visited. We started off by travelling from the island of South Ronaldsay over the 'Churchill Barriers' with Paul's commentary on the history of them. Once on the mainland our first destination was the pre historic village of Skara Brae. It was a fascinating site as were the Standing Stones of Brodgar. Our stops at Kirkwall (Kirkjuvágr in Norse) and the port of Stromness we're also lovely places to visit. We especially enjoyed St Magnus's cathedral in the city of Kirkwall. On our return journey a stop off at the Italian chapel was another place with an interesting history. It rounded off our day very well. Overall the trip was very much worth it despite the short period of time we had in each place. Highly recommended thing to do when on the north coast of Scotland. Read more Written 11 September 2023

  • Starlass213 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic introduction to Orkney Absolutely fantastic 😊 our original trip was cancelled due to bad weather but it was very easy to reschedule - an email was sent out the day before. We were with Ann, and she gave an incredibly knowledgeable (and funny) tour around the islands. We particularly enjoyed the local anecdotes. Plenty of time to stop at every site with extra to see the local wildlife. The sites were incredibly busy due to the cruise ships being in port at the same time, but it was all very well managed. Tip 1 - sit on the left hand side of the bus for the best views. Tip 2 - if you go on a Sunday, a lot of the shops will be closed so bring a snack/lunch etc. Read more Written 20 August 2023

  • jamesplegg 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic Day Trip to Orkney We had a FANTASTIC tour to Orkney with this tour. Everything worked liked clockwork. Clear advice on parking at John O Groats and getting to the ferry, the ferry was great with outside and inside decks. Coaches were there waiting to pick us up on arrival. The coach was great but the guide was just AWESOME. Darren - should be a pro comedian - absolutely hilarious jokes all the way around, but also gave great detail about the history, current life and geography of the Orkney Islands. Honestly, I am not sure this could have been any better. We say Scapa Flow, Kirkwall, Stromness, the Italian Chapel and the major pre-history sites (Scara Brae etc). Plenty of time to browse around Kirkwall and Stromness and get some lunch. The tour ended about 5.30, so it's a FULL day. We got back home tired but thrilled with all that we had seen and heard. Absolutely recommended. James Legg and Family Read more Written 31 July 2023

Orca Watching in John O'Groats

The best time & place to spot orcas...

In recent years Orca have come to be celebrated for their playful nature and high intelligence, almost leaving behind the nickname ‘killer whale’.

But when David Attenborough and the BBC recorded the whales hunting in 2017, it soon became clear what led to the nickname, with the team labelling the whales as ‘some of the most efficient hunters alive’. Plus, they are at the top of their food chain, consuming a large variety of sea-life; sea birds, turtles, sharks and even dolphins.

Despite their nickname, Orcas are still loved across the world, with Orca watching being incredibly popular. The BBC’s Winterwatch recently did a feature on Orca watching at John O' Groats , so below we’ve listed everything you’ll need to know if you’re planning a trip to see them.

orca watching in scotland

Orca watching in John O’Groats

The BBC’s Winterwatch feature was filmed over a 7-day period in the middle of May, during the annual Orca Watch. Anytime between May and September is said to be the time that you’re most likely to see them, however it isn’t guaranteed and it’s worth spending at least a few days there to increase your chances of seeing them.

The Orkney Islands are one of the best places to spot Orca and getting there from John O’Groats is incredibly easy, with ferries leaving from the pier right next to the inn everyday through May and September.

It takes roughly 40 minutes to get there and you will spot lots of wildlife on your way too (if you’re lucky even some Orcas!).

More information, as well as tickets can be found here .

Before you embark on your journey, here are 4 facts you may not know about Orcas:

  • As well as being included in the whale family, they are also classed as the largest member of the dolphin family.
  • Orcas are found in every Ocean around the world, making them the most widely distributed whale.
  • They are incredibly fast swimmers, having been recorded at speeds of up to 34 mph.

Other Wildlife You Can See in and around John O’Groats

john o groats wildlife

It's never guaranteed that you'll be lucky enough to see any, or all of the above, however there are specific times of the year when it's more likely. The John O'Groats wildlife cruises, featured on our Top 2020 John O'Groats Ferry Tours , provide guidance on when you're most likely to see what.

If you’re now planning your trip to spot the Orcas, we are offering a 10% discount on any stays longer than 3 days during Orca Watch 2020. If you’re not planning a trip to John O’Groats but still fancy a coastal retreat, our North Wales holiday cottages could be the perfect option instead.

  • Kerenza007 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Lovely Excursion & Well Organised! Great afternoon excursion out of John O Groats harbour! You can go on one way or the other pending the weather / sea tides / currents . The captain decides on the day! Wrap up warm it’s a little breezy & all the fresh sea air! We headed around Stroma island and saw many sea birds including puffins! Big thanks to one of crew members who lent me binoculars and guided me to see the puffins in the sea! (Didn’t catch his name but a lovely guy with grey beard, looked like a proper sea faring chap!) There were seals on the rocks and a harbour seal playing in the water as we left. Watching the sea currents meet and thrash about was great! The cliff and caves with thousands of birds nesting looked like little penguins but they are Guillemots. The commentary was appalling, we couldn't here it clearly and he was muttering. There only appeared to be one goal, collect the money and a quick drive round for an hour and a half. Luckily we saw 4 dolphins off the starboard and pointed it out to the Marine Biologist on board but still no diversion to investigate further. Read more Written 9 August 2022
