Have you ever wondered where your milk comes from? Abbotsford's EcoDairy is part functioning farm, part educational experience, where you can get up close and personal with the resident cows and learn how your milk is made.

EcoDairy has developed a partnership with Science World , Vancouver's popular science center, to develop dynamic displays and presentations to teach visitors all about dairy farming. While you'll get to visit the cows, you'll also get to learn about the technology involved in making milk.

40+ Fun Things to Do in Abbotsford, British Columbia

Abbotsford is the largest city in British Columbia outside of Greater Vancouver. “Abby” lies at the heart of the Fraser River Valley, a region known for its industrious and pious people, sunny weather, and fertile plains.

Only an hour’s drive from Vancouver and spitting distance from the United States border, Abbotsford is surrounded by gorgeous rural scenery and incredible views of immense Mt. Baker in the US. Once an important hub on various railway lines, today far too many pass through it in their rush to get to Vancouver or the interior of BC; speaking as an Alberta, Abbotsford is one of the many worthwhile stops on the drive from Calgary to Vancouver .

The best way to experience Abbotsford is by visiting its many farms, wineries, fruit markets, or the annual Agrifair. The city is also one of the country’s most ethnically diverse; a quarter of the population is of South Asian descent, and it is home to the oldest Sikh temple in North America.

My grandparents have lived in Abbotsford for most of my life, so we go there on holiday almost every year. It’s almost like a second home to me (my Grandpa also built a cabin on Galiano Island !) On our last few trips we visited with our kids; here’s my more family-focused guide to things to do in Abbotsford with kids . In this article, I’m going to give my personal recommendations for the best sights, wineries, breweries, parks, fruit markets, restaurants, and other things to do in Abbotsford. I’ll also recommend some day trips from Abbotsford, which include some of the best weekend getaways from Vancouver , at the end.

Spend some time in Abby, ideally in summer (or early April to see its many cherry blossoms!), and I can practically guarantee you’ll love the city as much as I do!

Top 10 Abbotsford Attractions

I’ll begin this article with some of the top historic sights and cultural attractions in the Abbotsford City Centre. It’s definitely worth spending a day dining, shopping, and exploring the town centre before heading out into the country, where the real magic lies.

Historic Downtown Abbotsford

Abbotsford’s historic downtown, also referred to as the Rail District , is located just west of the railway line that travels south to the United States. The heart of it is located on Montrose Ave. between George Ferguson Way and South Fraser Way.

The buildings in downtown Abbotsford mostly date to the 1950s and 60s, when it was a bustling city centre. Today, many have been renovated and now house atmospheric cafés, restaurants, bookstores, shops, and other businesses worth exploring.

Don’t miss Yes Chef , specializing in creative kitchenware. Across the street, Spruce Collective has a little bit of everything, perfect for picking up a gift.

For dining, Bow & Stern serves up some of the best seafood outside of Vancouver (check out their new location in neighbouring Chilliwack , too).

Duft & Co Bakehouse and Tracycakes Bakery Cafe are two of the best bakeries in town. For your coffee fix, head straight to Oldhand Coffee .

There are also some lovely painted murals downtown, especially in the alley between Montrose Ave and W. Railway Street; you can find the entrance opposite Yes Chef.

Where to stay in Abbotsford: If you’re spending the night, I recommend Sandman Hotel & Suites (see on Booking / Agoda / TripAdvisor ) . Yes, it’s a chain hotel, but it’s centrally located within walking distance of downtown and they have rooms with kitchenettes.

Gur Sikh Temple

Gur Sikh Temple is the oldest still-running Sikh gurdwara in North America. It was founded in 1911 by early Sikh settlers who came to work on farms in the area. Today it is a National Historic Site and was even visited by Justin Trudeau in 2017.

From the outside, the wooden gurdwara looks more like an early 20 th century shop common to the area. The bottom floor houses the langar (kitchen for preparing communal meals) and a small museum. If the door is locked, inquire for the key. The prayer hall is on the second floor. There are also some statues outside and a very tall flag pole.

Sikhs are incredibly welcoming; I have visited the Golden Temple in India, the most important temple in the Sikh religion, three times, and I can personally attest to this.

Visitors at Gur Sikh Temple are warmly welcomed; just make sure to cover your head before entering the prayer hall. Scarves are provided just outside the door on the second floor, and shoes should be removed before entering.

International Friendship Garden

The International Friendship Garden is a Japanese-style garden built in 2008 to commemorate Abbotsford’s relationship with its sister city, Fukagawa, Japan. The garden honors Abbotsford’s cultural diversity.

It is a small but dense walled-on oasis of greenery in front of Clearbrook library and a branch of the University of the Fraser Valley.

The centrepiece of the garden is the Farm Workers’ Memorial Statue, a golden tree with the faces of three South Asian farm workers who died in an accident in 2007.

When in the area, it’s also worth taking a stroll past the flower gardens and artificial ponds around Abbotsford City Hall.

The Reach Galley Museum

Also near Abbotsford City Hall, The Reach Gallery Museum is Abbotsford’s premier art gallery and museum.

The small gallery features rotating exhibitions covering local culture, history, and art. Entrance is by donation, with a suggested donation of $10 per adult and no fee for kids.

Clayburn Village Candy Store

Clayburn Village was the first company town in British Columbia, built by the Clayburn Company in the early 1900s.

Several of the village’s buildings remain today. The best one to visit is the Clayburn Village Store. The owners have restored the building and converted it into a nostalgic candy store.

There you’ll find hundreds upon hundreds of candies you remember from your childhood, as well as delicious caramels made in-house, some baked items, and more.

The village is a 5-minute drive north of the Abbotsford city centre.

Tanglebank Gardens

Plant enthusiasts will love Tanglebank Gardens just off Mt. Lehman Road northwest of central Abbotsford. All manner of flowers, houseplants, and small trees are for sale.

There’s also a small gift shop on site, while Tanglebank Gardens Brambels Bistro does healthful meals in a bright and casual setting.

If you’re in the area, don’t miss the collection of wineries further north on Mt. Lehman Road (see Best Wineries section below).

Castle Fun Park

If you’ve driven past Abbotsford on the TransCanada Highway en route to Vancouver, you’ve probably spotted Castle Fun Park .

The castle-like amusement park is perfect for a half day of fun with the kids. Indoor and outdoor facilities include go karts, bumper cars, kids’ bowling, laser maze, mini golf, batting cages, and a large arcade.

Having visited when my kids were very young, I would say that older kids (7+) will enjoy the park more. Prices are per game, so you can play as little or as much as you want.

Abbotsford Farm & Country Market

Abbotsford’s very own farmers’ market takes place every Saturday morning (9 am to noon) from the beginning of May to the end of October in Jubilee Park, just west of downtown.

Expect to find local produce, cheese, beer & wine, honey, treats, local crafts, and more. Conveniently for marketgoers with kids, there’s a playground right next to the market.

Abbotsford Agrifair

One of the top Abbotsford events is the annual Agrifair , a huge weekend fair celebrating the region’s agricultural roots.

Besides the agricultural equipment on display, you can also expect to find farm animals, agricultural demonstrations, a midway with rides, local crafts, and more. There is also a schedule of wilder events, such as motorcycle jumping, demolition derbies, concerts, drive-in movies, and fireworks.

If I can brag just a little, my grandparents were active participants in the AgriFair for many years; I have fond memories of my Grandpa drawing crowds with his cream separator demonstrations.

The Agrifair usually takes place on the long weekend at the beginning of August at the Abbotsford Exhibition Park. Normally there’s a small entrance fee; in 2021 the event was free but still required a ticket reservation.

Abbotsford International Airshow

Abbotsford’s other event of the year is the Abbotsford International Airshow . The event has been held annually since 1962 and attracts 100k+ onlookers. It has been called one of the top-10 best airshows in the world. 

Expect to see all types of aircraft painting patterns in the skies above Abbotsford over the course of the three-day event.

In 2021, observers could purchase a space for a car and up to 6 people to watch the event at the Abbotsford International Airport.

Best Parks and Walking Trails in Abbotsford

Abbotsford is blessed with numerous parks and green spaces. Many of them are connected by the Abbotsford Discovery Trail, a network of walking and cycling trails spanning the city from west to east.

Mill Lake Park

Mill Lake Park is Abbotsford’s most well-known park. Surrounding Mill Lake in the city centre, the park features walking trails and boardwalks around the lake, several playgrounds, Centennial Outdoor Pool, and right next to it, the city’s best spray park.

Trethewey House , a historic home dating to the 1920s, is also found in the park.

Discovery Trail

Abbotsford’s Discovery Trail consists of dozens of kilometers or walking and cycling trails connecting numerous parks in Abbotsford.

The western portion of the path begins at Fishtrap Creek Park in western Abbotsford, stretching north to MacLure and Clearbrook Parks, then east to Old Riverside Park.

From there, the eastern portion of Discovery Trail stretches all the way to the base of Sumas Mountain east of town.

Fishtrap Creek Park

Fishtrap Creek park is a quaint oasis of ponds in western Abbotsford. The ponds are often covered in plant life and home to many species of bird.

A network of walking trails are built around the ponds, with wooden pavilions built providing views of wildlife.

Willband Creek Park

Willband Creek Park is another urban wetland, located a short drive north of the city centre. The 2.5-kilometer easy walking loop is best walked in the early morning. Various birds, geese, and even bats are a common sight.

Albert Dyck Park

You can hit the beach, go for a swim, or try a variety of watersports right in town at human-made Albert Dyck Park, which is located next to the Abbotsford International Airport.

Matsqui Trail Park

Pleasant walking trails and picnic spots are found along the Fraser River at Matsqui Trail Park, opposite Mission.

Sumas Mountain

For a more serious hike, try Sumas Mountain Trail in eastern Abbotsford. There are a variety of easier and mid-range hikes on the mountain, too, mostly accessed from communities on the slopes of the mountain.

I really enjoyed this trail , which actually follows a series of mountain biking trails on the mountain with some crazy jumps (watch out if walking!) The trail included a pretty epic view looking down on Abbotsford farmland and Highway 1.

Farm Experiences in Abbotsford

The Fraser Valley, in which Abbotsford is located, is one of the most important agricultural regions of British Columbia.

Around Abbotsford, there are dozens of farms offering visitor experiences, from produce sales and U-Pick to full-blown family and school trip experiences.

Visiting one or several of these farms is one of the best ways to get a taste (both figuratively and literally) of Abbotsford’s farming culture. Most of them also serve as venues for weddings or other events.

One of the most popular farms in the area, Maan Farms has a petting zoo, sunflower festival, yoga with goats, a zipline, large playground, U-pick berries, and more.

Before you leave, make sure to try their excellent fruit wines and homemade samosas.

Birchwood Dairy Farm

This dairy farm offers full tours, but let’s be honest: most people make the journey to Birchwood Dairy Farm to try a few scoops of their super creamy ice cream.

The small shop also sells food for the kids to feed to the farm animals on site.

Taves AppleBarn Pumpkin Farm

Come to Taves Family Farm in late summer and early fall when the apples and pumpkins are in season and the most things to do are on offer, including a sunflower maze.

The farm is also a cidery, with delicious alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions available from the tasting room. The aged cider wine is especially good, while the apple slushies are perfect on a hot day.

Campbell’s Gold Honey Farm

For all things honey, including mead, honey wine, beeswax soap, and more, head to Campbell’s Gold Honey Farm west of town near Aldergrove.

Tuscan Farm Gardens

Although their visiting season is short, Tuscan Farm Gardens is worth a visit from mid-June to late July to see their beautiful lavender gardens. They also sell a variety of lavender-infused products, including ice cream.

EcoDairy is another popular dairy farm that is especially educational for kids or anyone looking to learn about how modern dairy farming works. They do also, of course, sell ice cream and other fresh dairy products.

Wineries in Abbotsford

The Fraser Valley offers suitable conditions for growing grapes (though not as suitable as the much better-known Okanagan wine region). Abbotsford is increasingly becoming known for its wines.

There are four small, family-run wineries in Abbotsford. They specialize in crisp, aromatic white wines and local takes on classic reds. Because their production is smaller in scale, some of them combine grapes with partner farms in the Okanagan.

The first three wineries below are located around Mt. Lehman road northwest of town, a beautiful agricultural area and perfect place to spend an afternoon in the sun, sipping on local vino.

Because my grandparents lived for years in the area, just down the road from these wineries, I feel a personal connection to this location and these wines.

Seaside Pearl Winery

The tasting room at Seaside Pearl Winery looks like a chapel, quite the surprise as you drive in between two rows of grape vines.

We stop in every time we’re in town, and especially love their Charlotte Estate Petite Milo (comparable to a sauvignon blanc) and their Magnolias Estate Rosé.

SingleTree Winery

SingleTree Winery stands out for its lovely tasting domes, perfect for a date or private wine tasting or intimate gathering with friends. We really enjoyed their Siggy (Siegerrebe) and the sparkling version of it.

They also sell some delicious (and surprisingly cheap) locally made cheese, with flavors such as mustard, stinging nettle, and truffle.

Mt. Lehman Winery

Mt. Lehman Winery is the first one you’ll encounter when driving up from town. They do refreshing local takes on common whites and reds.

This winery has some of the most budget-friendly options of the three wineries, and there’s a lovely patio at the end of a storage room full of wine  barrels.

Ripples Estate Winery

East of town and south of the TransCanada Highway, Ripples Estate Winery specializes in fruit wines, including a port-style wine made from blueberries and sparkling blueberry wine.

There’s an excellent patio, and besides wine they also serve a variety of creative cocktails.

Breweries in Abbotsford

Lovers of fine craft brews now have a handful of choices to support when in Abbotsford. 

Abbotsford in fact used to grow large amounts of hops before the industry moved elsewhere.

Today, hop crops are returning, and local breweries make use of them, along with locally grown barley, fruits, and other ingredients, to make a staggering range of refreshing and creative brews.

Field House Brewing

Field House Brewing is the best-known craft brewery in Abbotsford. Nothing beats a cold one enjoyed on their “beer lawn” along in the Rail District southeast of the historic downtown on a summer afternoon. 

Field House specializes at unique and fruit-infused takes of classic beers along the likes of melon IPA, peach-passion fruit beer spritz, pineapple sour, and toasted coconut black lager.

Ravens Brewing

Ravens Brewing is one of three brewery taprooms located in western Abbotsford just off the TransCanada and Fraser Highway.

Indigenous-owned, the brewery supports the local community in various ways, not to mention they produce some amazing beers using as many locally sourced ingredients as possible.

The seasonal jalepeno mango beer stood out as really special for me, while I could drink the Old Familiar English dark mild all day. Smoking Gun Coffee Roasters, which now operates in Chilliwack , used to be located here in the brewery.

Old Abbey Ales

You can pull up a chair as I did and peer into the room “where the magic happens” at Old Abbey Ales , an open loft-like tasting room with a variety of tempting brews on offer.

The Sippy Chai Aye, a chai-flavored beer, was so delicious that I bought armfuls to take home with me.

Loudmouth Brewing

Loudmouth Brewing only does a half dozen types of beer at a time, but they do them well. Guests rave about their food.

Trading Post Brewing

This excellent Abbotsford restaurant serves beers crafted at the Trading Post brewery in nearby Fort Langley.

Where to Eat in Abbotsford

Besides my recommendations below, I would also suggest getting some Indian food while in Abbotsford! With nearly a quarter of the population being South Asian, there seems to be an Indian restaurant on every street in Abbotsford.

Bow and Stern

If you love seafood like we do, then I personally recommend Bow and Stern in downtown Abbotsford. They serve up fresh seafood galore, sparing locals a trip to the coast in Vancouver. They also have a long list of wines, cocktails, and craft beers on tap.

Banter Ice Cream

Banter Ice Cream in Jubilee Park next to downtown has some of the best ice cream in town. It’s all made in-house, with creative flavors such as Earl Grey, Blueberry Basil, and vegan options.

We loved our mango cheesecake bingsu (Korean shaved ice dessert) and matcha bubble tea at 2Scoops , just around the corner from Banter (oh, the choices!) Having lived in East Asia for over a decade, this brought back memories for me.

Restaurant 62

Restaurant 62 is a highly rated farm-to-table establishment making use of hyper-local ingredients.

Produce Markets in Abbotsford

Abbotsford is surrounded by produce farms, and local people understandably can’t get enough of their fruits & vegetables. There are some excellent produce markets where you can stock up; here are but a few to choose from:

• Lepp Farm Market (north of town on the way to Mission)
• Howard Wong Farms (on the same road, even closer to Mission)
• Neufeld Farms (southwest of town)
• Nature’s Pickin’ (southeast of town)

Day Trips from Abbotsford

Abbotsford is well-positioned between Fort Langley and Chilliwack at the centre of the Fraser Valley. There are countless day trip possibilities in all directions, including the mountains to the north.

I won’t even get into day trips to Vancouver, which is but an hour away. Meanwhile, the United States border is only a few kilometres to the south!

Cultus Lake, Chilliwack

The most popular lake in the region is without a doubt Cultus Lake in Chilliwack , about 45 minutes by car from central Abbotsford.

Cultus Lake Provincial Park has an excellent beach for swimming, while the docks on Cultus Lake Marina offer fine views.

There are also several campgrounds around the lake, while Cultus Lake Adventure Park and Cultus Lake Waterpark draw families from afar.

Harrison Hot Springs

Harrison Hot Springs is a relaxed hot spring village on lovely Harrison lake, northeast of Abbotsford in the Fraser Valley. This is the best place to go for a hot spring soak within easy driving distance of Abbotsford. The springs can mainly be enjoyed at the Harrison Hot Springs Public Pool or the popular Harrison Springs Resort , but there are several other accommodation options in town.

The town is also a good base for a variety of outdoor activities, including a small waterpark in summer. Harrison Hot Springs is a 30 or 50 minute drive northeast of Chiliwack or Abbotsford, respectively.

Cascade Falls & Davis Lake

To get off-the-beaten track and get lost in nature, I recommend taking a drive north to Cascade Falls Regional Park , where a short trail leads through original forest to a suspension bridge and stunning waterfall.

There are also picnic spots with access to swimming holes downstream from the waterfall.

Continue north to Davis Lake Provincial Park , my family’s favorite lake. There’s no sign, but once the road is adjacent to the lake (on GoogleMaps; you won’t be able to see it), park just after the bridge over a small waterfall. An unmarked trail (warning: it’s quite steep in parts) follows the creek down to a stunning alpine lake. Come on a weekday and there’s a good chance you’ll have it all to yourself.

On the way back, visit the gorgeous Westminster Abbey in Mission before crossing the Fraser River back to Abbotsford.

Golden Ears Provincial Park

For stunning mountain scenery, hiking trails, blue-green rivers, and beaches on huge Alouette Lake, head to Golden Ears Provincial Park. It’s an hour’s drive northwest of Abbotsford.

Fort Langley National Historic Site

Heading towards Vancouver, it’s worth stopping in Fort Langley for its namesake fort, a National Historic Site. You can learn about the area’s past at this former fur trading post. There are loads of other things to do in Fort Langley, rounding out a full day trip.

15 Best Things to Do in Abbotsford (Brits-Columbia, Canada)

Located in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley, Abbotsford is right next to Greater Vancouver and the USA. It is the largest city outside Greater Vancouver and has the third highest percentage of visible minorities in the country.

Culturally rich and filled with history, Abbotsford is often a stopover for many on route to Vancouver or Alaska. But is it well worth spending a few days in the city.

Abbotsford is not only dynamic, but also beautiful thanks to its stunning natural surroundings. It has much to offer visitors, from its cultural attractions to it agricultural ones.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Abotsford :

1. Stroll through a gallery

One of the top attractions in the city is the Reach Gallery Museum, which is an art gallery and a museum combined into one. Stroll through the gallery and admire the phenomenal artwork on display.

The Reach Gallery Museum showcases not only Canadian artwork, but also art from around the world. Its permanent collection focuses on local, regional and national artists, while special exhibitions showcase international artists.

The 6,096 square metre gallery and museum is run by a non-profit organisation and is completely free to enter. Visit the gallery and immerse yourself in its lovely artwork.

2. Go to a temple

The Gur Sikh Temple is not only the oldest Sikh temple in the country, but also in all of North America. It is National Historic site that should be visited by all.

The temple dates back to 1908, which is when the first Sikhs came to the area. It has since been renovated to become what it is today.

Whether you are Sikh or practice another religion, this temple is definitely worth visiting. As is the museum in the basement that showcases the history of the Sikh community in the area.

3. Step back in time

The 1920 arts-&-crafts Trethewey House Heritage Site Museum was built for the prominent Tretheway family. Today, the bungalow is a heritage site that allows you to step back in time.

Visit the museum and see artefacts that date back to the 1920s. You will also learn about the history of the house and the family; who founded the Abbotsford Lumber Company.

Drop-in guided tours are offered between 1-4pm, while tours for larger groups can be arranged ahead of time. It is also possible to wonder around the beautiful gardens.

4. Go for a walk

There are over 98 kilometres of urban trails in Abbotsford that are spread across over 1,045 hectares of parkland. Go for a walk through the terrain of your choice.

There are lakeside trails, mountain trails and forest trails, as well as numerous others. Choose the difficulty and scenery of your choice and enjoy an afternoon of hiking while being surrounded by stunning scenery.

One of the most popular places to walk is Mill Lake Park, which is right in central Abbotsford. If you want to venture a little further, try DeLair Park or Clayburn Creek Park.

5. Take the kids to play

If you are visiting the city with your kids, be sure to take them to play at the Castle Fun Park. This castle-themed park is open year round, though it is best to visit in the summer.

6. Explore the mountains

Go hiking at Sumas Mountain, which sits just northeast of Abottsford. The hiking trail is 13.5 kilometres round trip and takes around 6.4 hours to hike.

Hike along the trail and explore the mountains, while at the same time enjoying the magnificent views. There is no camping along the trial, so plan to make a day of it.

Parts of the trail are narrow and pass through forest and ravine, while other parts are covered with gravel. It is marked along the entire way, so there is no fear of ever getting lost.

7. Get your adrenaline pumping

The best place to do this is also at Sumas Mountain, where there are 22 different mountain bike trails. These trails vary from easy to extremely difficult, so choose your trail well.

The hardest trail in the mountain is Rock Diva, which is double black diamond and has a distance of roughly 882 kilometres. The easiest trail is Squid Line, with most of it descending down the mountain.

There are a few car parks at the start of many of the trails. There is also a viewpoint at the top of Lookout Trail that boasts phenomenal views of the Fraser Valley.

8. Be at one with nature

Also outside of the city, but worth the journey, is the Golden Ears Provincial Park. The 556 square kilometre park is named after its twin peaks.

The Golden Ears Provincial Park is one of the best places in the region to be at one with nature. It features five camping grounds, two of which are only accessible on foot.

There is an extensive network of hiking trials within the park that will please any nature lover. There are also around 20 kilometres of horseback riding trails.

9. Tour a winery

Abottsford is well-known for its agriculture, which includes vineyards. In fact, there are three wineries right in Abottsford where you can go on a tour.

Mt Lehman Winery is arguably the best of the bunch, with over six hectares of grape trees ranging from pinot noir to chardonnay. It is an award-winning winery with tasting rooms.

Singletree Winery has been around since the late 1800s, with whites being their main focus. There is also Maan Farms Estate Winery, which makes blueberry, blackberry and strawberry wine in addition to various grape varieties.

10. Look at airplanes

The Abbotsford International Air Show takes place each year during the second weekend of August. It is the largest air show in Canada and will please any airplane fanatic.

Head to the Abbotsford International Airport and look at planes passing above you. You can also get up close and personal to aircrafts and meet pilots.

Highlights of the show include Snowbirds, Blue Angels, United States Air Force Thunderbirds and the SkyHawks parachute team. There is also a static display and a fireworks show.

11. Visit a few farms

There are several working farms in and around Abbotsford that can easily be visited on a self-guided tour. Visit a bee farm, a dairy farm, a chicken farm or a trout farm, or all four, as well as numerous others.

Head to the Birchwood Dairy Farm to try one of their 50 flavours of gourmet ice cream, Campbell’s Gold Honey Farm & Meadery to purchase beeswax candles or honey, or Goats Pride at McLennan Creek for some homemade goat milk or cheese.

On the farm tour, stop at Granny and Grumpa’s Antiques for some unique gifts or EcoDairy for a hands-on experience. Don’t forget to also have a meal at Restaurant 62.

12. See the city from the sky

The Abbotsford Skydive Centre gives you the chance to see the city from the sky, as if you were a bird. Go skydiving and soar above the city, taking in the exceptional views.

The centre also offers lessons for beginners, teaching you how to jump and freefall from a plane. There are also more advanced lessons offered to those looking to advance their skydiving skills.

Before jumping from the plane, the Abbotsford Skydive Centre will take you on a fantastic 15 minute flight above the area. See not only the city, but other areas of the Fraser Valley, Vancouver and the Gulf Islands.

13. Take the kids to a playground

Not just any playground, but a massive indoor one. Play Abby is a 3,048 square metre indoor playground and laser tag entertainment centre.

The playground is suitable for babies, as well as older children. In fact, it has separate areas and things to do for different age groups.

The laser tag is for kids over the age of five, but adults can enjoy it too. The space themed laser tag game lasts around 15 minutes.

14. Go climbing

Project Climbing Centre is an indoor climbing centre with over 2,700 metres of climbing surface. It boasts some pretty amazing steep terrain, though any level of climber is sure to enjoy climbing here.

There are numerous courses that range from beginner to advanced. If you have never climbed before it is not a problem, as Project Climbing Centre also offers courses.

It is even possible to go bouldering, with mats laid out to catch you if you fall. But don’t worry, you will never climb more than four metres above the ground.

15. Head to the market

The Abbotsford Flea Market has been running since 1985. Head to the market and spend the day shopping, dining and watching the locals go about their daily life.

There are over 200 venders at the market selling everything from vintage items to food. It is open every Sunday and has outdoor venders in the summer months.

Wander around the market and shop for unique souvenirs, one-of-a-kind art or clothing. Finish the day by enjoying some delicious homemade food.

Sometimes, if you’re lucky, the practice of travel reveals something about a place that you thought you knew and blows your preconceptions out of the water. That happened to me recently, and in the most unlikely place, the city of Abbotsford, British Columbia. 

The city has always been a drive-through kind of destination that I thought had little to interest me. I didn’t think there were many things to do in Abbotsford. How wrong I was.

People are doing amazing and creative things in Abbotsford. The result is cool boutiques, yummy bakeries, flower festivals, and restaurants and cafés serving up farm to table goodness from farms that are less than 10 Mile Diet-distance away. This growing ‘ city in the country ‘ maintains strong ties to its rural and agrarian past, and sits about an hour east of Vancouver in the Fraser Valley. Let’s take a trip down the road to enjoy these 23 surprising things to do in Abbotsford, BC.

Visit Clayburn Village

Clayburn Village is a unique, secluded little village situated in the shelter of Sumas Mountain. The village and Clayburn Company brick plant were founded in 1905 by Charles Maclure, son of John Maclure, a former Royal Engineer who settled on a government land in the region west of Clayburn. Its claim to fame is that it was British Columbia’s first company town. The village makes for a quaint day trip destination and a popular wedding venue.

The mild and varied climate of Abbotsford’s ‘Heart of the Valley’, along with its position on the BC Bird Trail and the natural migration flyway make the city ideal for  birding and other outdoor activities. It’s really a must-do for beginner and seasoned birders, as typically over 230 different species are recorded annually.

A perfect place to spot birds is at Willband Creek Park . This an urban wetland park featuring easy trails, marshes, ponds and water features that attract a wide range of bird species. We spotted herons, hawks, eagles and all manner of small birds on our walk through the park.

Another great spot for birding and recreation is Fishtrap Creek Park . This large park in the heart of the city has green spaces, picnic tables, scenic walking trails and lookout points to spot birds and wildlife.

Tiptoe through the tulips

The Abbotsford Tulip Festival features the largest display of tulips in Canada. And in 2024, the Fraser Valley spectacle will take place at Lakeland Flowers in early April. The sight of 27 acres of flower fields in full bloom is one of Abbotsford’s top attractions in spring, so plan to get your tickets early.

The line ups don’t lie. Oldhand C​offee  is run and owned by Kristina and Johannes van Bommel van Vloten. It’s the perfect Scandic Chic spot to enjoy a specialty coffee and fresh baked goods at this family-owned cafe. 

The Polly Fox  is a bakery and bistro in the heart of the downtown. Specializing in 100% gluten and allergen-free baked goods, look for sweet and savoury decadent treats, snacks and small meals. Everything is made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Splurge on seafood

Specializing in seafood, the family-owned ​ Bow and Stern ​ harbours a sense of character. Tucked away in Historic Downtown, guests arrive to photos of boats lining the walls. Distressed pieces look like treasures retrieved from the bottom of the sea, while rustic wood tables and chairs on stone flooring make for a truly comfortable room. Try the oysters on the half-shell, seafood platters, honey and thyme fried chicken, or fish tacos, my favourite.

Curate your wardrobe

In need of a little shopping therapy? Step into Montrose and George General Store in downtown Abby to get your fix. Here, you’ll find an intriguing mix of curated clothing for men and women, housewares, accessories and beauty products.

Abbotsford has a rich cultural history, and you can learn more by visiting its museums, galleries, and heritage sites. Explore the fascinating cultural attractions at the Trethewey House Heritage Site , a historic home built in 1919 that offers insights into the city’s pioneer past.

Art enthusiasts will appreciate the vibrant works showcased at the Kariton Art Gallery, featuring creations by local artists across various mediums. The Reach Gallery Museum is a public art gallery and museum located in the heart of Abbotsford. The gallery exhibits artwork from across Canada and around the world. Meet bees, taste mead

How sweet it is. Family-owned  Campbell’s Gold Honey Farm  is a licensed meadery (aka. honey winery), producing a variety of honey wines, or mead. They produce ancient mead (the kind you read about in middle age lore), melomels (honey/fruit wines), and pyment (honey/grape wine). Much of the honey used is produced by their very own bees. You can even take a tour of the hives and see the industrious bees at work.

DYK: One gram of honey is the life’s work of one honeybee, so your 500 gram tub is 500 bees. So lick that honey spoon please, and don’t waste a drop of their hard work.

The grapes and most of the fruit and berries used in the honey wines are produced right on the farm. They also have a country store that sells all flavours of honey, and products from the beehive, like beeswax soaps and candles. You will want to take some home.

Do wine tastings

Yes, Abbotsford is wine country. At Singletree Winery you can enjoy some delicious award-winning wine, grown from grapes found in the city’s rolling hills. The Etsell family grows grapes on 14 acres of their 67-acre heritage farm. You can sample quality BC VQA wines in their tasting room. It’s open year-round and showcases cool climate varietals like ​Siegerrebe​ and Grüner Veltlin​er.

Be a little bit country

Farming for four decades, the Maan Family began by growing premium strawberries and selling them at a simple fruit stand. From that fruit stand,  Maan Farms  has grown to include an entire country experience of farm market, petting zoo, goat yoga (!), food purveyor, scary corn mazes, farm tours, flower festivals, u-dig fields, and an Estate Winery specializing in fruit wines.

This is a very family-friendly destination. Kids can play, get dirty and enjoy some delicious Indian-inspired food or ice cream as a treat. Adults can do goat yoga (yes, it’s a thing), followed up by tastings of the Maans’ award-winning fruit wines, including a Strawberry/Raspberry blend, Blueberry and Blackberry. Maan Farms is a country wonderland.

Get craft-beery

Like in any good BC town, craft breweries are a thing in Abbotsford too. A very good thing if you’re into beer, and East Abby’s  Fieldhouse Brewing  offers a full craft beer experience. The team brews beer that they love and want to share with the community. “ We’re trying to be the best representatives of our East Abby community. Treating our people like a family as we grow together.”  

In addition to producing some neat brews like sour wheat gose, tropical white ale with lemongrass, hazy IPAs and salted black porter, Fieldhouse has created a gathering and foodie place for friends and soon-to-be-friends. Talented chef Bonnie Friesen leads a team that grows their own vegetables and sources hyper-locally, presenting beautiful farm to plate meals.

There’s not a ton of indoor seating options, (we were lucky to score two seatsnear the fireplace). But the outdoor patio and grassy knoll make it feel like you’re chilling in your neighbor’s backyard. Take off the heels and prepare t​o embrace all the field house feels.

Take a hike and a selfie

Work off the incredible food and drink options in Abbotsford by hitting the city’s many scenic hiking trails. The Discovery Trail crosses the city and has many entry/exit points. It’s is a great place to lace up your shoes for a walk, jog, cycle or hike along this extensive trail system. 

Connecting east and west Abbotsford, this trail (the west section is 32 kilometres and the east section is 30 kilometres) winds through natural habitats like forests and ponds, while the paved interpretive trails allow for exercise, learning, and observing. There are some scenic spots for selfies, as well as off-leash dog areas.

The Mill Lake Park Loop is a 2.1 kilometer moderately busy loop trail that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. If you’re interested in fishing in the city, Mill Lake is stocked with rainbow trout. Note: You must have a valid British Columbia freshwater fishing license.

If you’re feeling adventurous, tackle the hike up to Sumas Mountain just north of the border with the United States. It’ll take about 6+ hours to hike this 13.5 km loop trail, but the views of the Fraser Valley will be worth it.

We’ve attended the show several times, and loved the thrilling spectacle aerial performances, military demonstrations, and displays of vintage aircraft. Held every August since 1962, the show appeals to all ages, whether you’re a seasoned aviation enthusiast or a first-time, pint-sized attendee.

In addition to the thrilling aerial performances, the Abbotsford International Airshow features interactive exhibits, aviation-themed displays, and hands-on activities for children and adults. Kids can explore the world of aviation through educational workshops, flight simulators, and meet-and-greets with pilots.

There are food vendors, souvenir shops, and ample seating and picnic areas for families to relax, refuel, and enjoy the show.

Abbotsford is a city of about 165,000 people (2021) in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia . With mountains visible in nearly every direction, it is in one of the most geographically stunning regions of British Columbia. Abbotsford is an agriculture-based city that is a popular visitor stop over point for U.S. travellers north bound to the Yukon and Alaska and Canadians travelling east and west along the Trans-Canada Highway .

Abbotsford's colonial development began when the Royal Engineers surveyed the area in response to the gold rush along the Fraser River in 1858. This led to the building of Yale Road (today Old Yale Road), the first transportation route to link the Fraser Valley. The settlement grew and the production of butter, milk and tobacco began by the late 1860s. In 1889, former Royal Engineer John Cunningham Maclure applied for a Crown grant to obtain the 160 acres (0.65 km²) that would become Abbotsford.

There is some controversy over the origin of the Abbotsford name. The most commonly cited origin is that Maclure named the land "Abbotsford" after family friend Henry Braithwaite Abbott, the western superintendent of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Until 1922 the name was spelled Abottsford. Maclure's sons later stated that the property had been named for Sir Walter Scott's home, Abbotsford, and pronounced it with the accent on ford, while in his later years Maclure claimed that the naming had been "a combination of two ideas".

The title passed hands to Robert Ward, who filed a townsite subdivision on July 9, 1891. Also in 1891, the CPR built a railway line through the area that connected Mission with the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway at Sumas, Washington. This route was the only rail connection between Vancouver and Seattle until 1904. In 1892, Robert Ward sold many of the lots to private investors, and sold a significant portion to the Great Northern Railway’s subsidiary company the Vancouver, Victoria and Eastern Railway. The British Columbia Electric Railway (BCER) arrived in 1910. The Interurban, as the BCER tram linking Abbotsford with Vancouver and Chilliwack was called, was discontinued in 1950.

Abbotsford International Airport is approximately 80 minutes drive away from Vancouver International Airport , 60 minutes from downtown Vancouver, 10 minutes from the city centre of Abbotsford, 2 1/2 hours from Whistler, 45 minutes from Harrison Hot Springs , and 40 minutes from Bellingham Airport ( BLI  IATA ) in Washington state.

From the US [ edit ]

If you're coming from Seattle or elsewhere along the US West Coast, don't waste your time and money taking transit north to Vancouver and then east to Abbotsford. Instead, save several hours and $50-100 by taking a local bus from Bellingham, WA to the Sumas-Hungtingdon border crossing, crossing on foot, then taking an Abbostford local bus into town. Bus 71x leaves Bellingham's Cordata Station for Sumas four times a day Monday through Friday, twice a day on Saturday (make sure to check the schedules online or with Google Maps before you go). As of July 2019 it costs US$1.00 and takes about 1 hour. From the stop at 1st and Cherry St. in Sumas, walk a few blocks to the border. After passing through, just a couple blocks on the other side you can catch Bus 3 into downtown Abbotsford for C$2.50. It leaves almost every hour, and the fare includes free transfers. The whole process takes less than three hours and costs only a few dollars.
