The definitive ranking of every Tiger Woods PGA Tour video game

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2004-2.png

Last August, the newest golf video game—PGA Tour 2K21—was released to the public, quickly becoming a hit among golf fans. While there had been a number of golf games released since the final iteration of the Tiger Woods video game series (in 2014), this was the first one that felt like a must-have, even without Woods' name on the box.

Seven months later, it was announced that Woods will in fact be back on the box. The 15-time major champion has inked a long-term deal with 2K , meaning he'll be returning to a console near you in the future. Rejoice, Cyber Tiger is back.

Of course, this news comes not long after Woods was in a single-car accident, one that has had him hospitalized ever since. Hopefully, Woods makes a full recovery and returns to the real course.

In the mean time, fans might get to relive their Tiger Woods glory days with Woods on an Xbox or Playstation again soon. That got us feeling nostalgic, so naturally we ranked all 16 iterations of the Tiger Woods franchise.

2006 was a very weird year for all the EA Sports games. It was basically a lame duck year, as Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 were now the systems to have. That left ’ 06 games in limbo for PS2 owners. Essentially, they were the same game as the year before with a couple of dumb, shiny new features. This was definitely the case for the “Tiger Woods” series as well. ’ 06 was as forgettable as they come.

Not all that different from 1999, which we’ll get to in a bit.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2002.png

The first year of the analog stick swing. Literally changed the game.

Honestly, 2003 was great, but what came after it makes its existence almost irrelevant.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2011.png

One of the big selling points for 2011 was the Ryder Cup mode, which flat out stunk. If you’re going to introduce an event like that into the game, one people hold very near and dear to their hearts, you’ve got to do it right. Funny enough, they introduced a pretty big event in the 2012 version of the game and nailed it.

This is purely out of respect for the franchise. Back to where it all began. Graphics? Terrible. Gameplay? Pretty good for PS1 in 1999! After years and years of playing with the analog stick, I can’t imagine playing a golf game where you had to time a meter like you’re kicking a field goal in Madden, but that’s the way it was. Kinda cool that it was exactly Tiger’s swing, but it didn’t feel like you were controlling him. Like I said, this is out of respect. By the way, something I just learned in doing research for this ranking was that there was an “Easter Egg” in the first 100,000 pressings of the game that played “Jesus vs. Santa,” a lost episode of South Park, which is on YouTube . I’m not kidding.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2001.png

The first “Tiger Woods” to be on PS2 had strong graphics and looked much more like the video games of today, as opposed to the Golden Tee-esque versions of 1999 and 2000. But this game still had the whack swing meter.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2009.png

I think the only thing separating ’ 09 from ’ 08 was Hank Haney being your coach in the game. The hell was that about?

Might as well just lump 2008 and 2009 together. Kind of forgotten years in the series in my opinion. The big jump on the new systems came in 2010. Although, none of the newest games have the Jesus shot:

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2007.png

This year was a massive step forward for the game in graphics and presentation, which makes sense given it was on the new systems. The real fun, however, was on the PS2 version, which I still own. There was a great team mode and some fun fantasy courses (I believe there was a course in Central Park in this game). But the best part was the addition of Riviera, a course I must have played a thousand times in that game. I guess that means I was “woke” before “woke” even existed, which is an elite level of woke-ness.

2010 was a hit for many reasons, and I think the Nintendo Wii version was the most popular of the bunch this year. But I had it for Xbox 360 and it was just delightful. First off, it was perhaps the best cover of the series, featuring Tiger’s famous, double-fisted U.S. Open celebration at Torrey Pines. That was a particularly nice touch because this was also the first year the U.S. Open was in the game, which coincided with the year it was back at Pebble Beach. Most importantly, this was Anthony Kim’s video-game debut, which was such a monumental occasion that there’s video of Tiger talking up Kim in one of the game ’ s trailers. This was probably the first time in the game’s history that I popped in the disc for the first time and played with someone other than Tiger, that someone being Kim.

Considering it wasn’t all that different from ’ 12, ’ 13 probably shouldn’t be this high, but sometimes more of the same is good. ’ 13 continued to focus on Augusta/The Masters, and the collector’s edition of the game even had a green-jacket ceremony. The two best additions to the game were Rory McIlroy, who was somehow left out of 2012 after being in 2010 and 2011, and Dustin Johnson. They both returned in ’ 13 and ’ 14 and were easily the second- and third-best players in the game behind TW. ’ 13 was the last year of Adam Scott and Justin Rose, who were each staples in the franchise for years. Course-wise, ’ 13 also made some great adds in Royal County Down, Royal Birkdale, The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, Crooked Stick and PGA National.

Some may be scoffing at this being No. 4, which is fair. The first year of Augusta National and a “ Road to the Masters ” career mode in a video game should be worthy of No. 1, but the game only got better in its final two installments. With the introduction of Augusta also came the familiar voice of Jim Nantz, which no one complained about. ’ 12 also featured “The Caddie Experience,” which was cool for all of the first 10 minutes until it became redundant. New golfers included Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson, the Molinari brothers, Zach Johnson and Bubba Watson. Sadly, this was the final year of Anthony Kim in the series. Pour one out, folks.

While the year we still haven’t gotten to is the game’s peak, 2005 is actually my favorite year of “Tiger Woods.” Gameplay was similar to the previous year, but there were welcome additions like the ability to adjust your stance/ball position to hit it higher or lower, and the ability to hit a punch and flop shot as well as chips and pitches. Putting was the same, with the same caddie advice and a back and through stroke once you read the putt, but this was the first year of “Tiger Vision,” which you got to use a handful of times per round with the use of the R1 button. By holding it down, your player would zoom in via a narrow cone (just like Tiger!) and see exactly where to aim the putt, turning a sure three-putt into a 76-foot eagle conversion.

Where this game separated itself was the legend mode, which allowed you to unlock Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan and, of course, “Sunday” Tiger Woods. Trying to unlock all those greats, a sick soundtrack, and new courses like Harbour Town, Colonial, Sherwood, Greek Isles (fantasy course) and, my personal favorite, Couer d’Alene, where I once shot 48 with “Sunday” Tiger and … lost to a buddy of mine who shot 46 with Hogan, had me glued to this game for hours on end.

The last “Tiger Woods” game was, in my opinion, the best of the Xbox 360 era, though I won’t fault any ’ 12 or ’ 13 truthers for wanting those higher on this list. All three had Augusta National, which is enough to put them all in a tie for second, but ’ 14, the historic edition specifically, just did it for me. You could play Augusta National in 1934, reverse routing and all. New courses included Muirfield Village, Royal Troon and Oak Hill. In a brilliant nostalgia play, the game also brought back unlockable legends: Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino and Sam Snead. There were even different versions of them, like an early 1960s version Jack Nicklaus and a late 1970s Jack Nicklaus, and you could compete as all of them or against them in reenactments of their greatest career moments. The game’s best feature, however, was having all four major championships in career mode. Much like Michael Strahan, the “Tiger Woods” video game went out on top with the ’ 14 version.

I could just write “DMX. That is all” and drop the mic, but that wouldn’t fully describe this game’s GOATness. Everything about it was perfect right from the “Up in here” opening montage. There were 20 courses, the most in a Tiger Woods game to that point, including new additions like Bethpage Black and Sahalee, as well six fantasy courses (Black Rock Cove was a personal fave). 2004 also featured “Game Face,” which allowed you to create your player’s face to your exact liking, wrinkles and all. The gameplay wasn’t all that different from 2003, but it didn’t need to be. Once the analog stick was introduced, the gameplay was pretty much perfect in the PS2 era. But 2004 was its peak.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 Review

The PlayStation 2 version of Tiger Woods 08 has no new game modes, fewer courses, and fails to improve on last year's game in any significant way.

By Aaron Thomas on September 6, 2007 at 5:14PM PDT

Many people see the yearly releases of sports games as little more than full-priced roster updates or expansions. But even the most cynical person wouldn't expect less content out of a sequel. Well, that's what you get with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 for the PlayStation 2. You get the same game modes as last year, but astonishingly fewer courses--all for a $40 price tag. This might be the first "contraction pack" in video game history.

There are a healthy number of golfers and courses in the game, but it's disappointing that much of the new content came at the expense of old content. Camilo Villegas, Morgan Pressel, Paula Creamer, and a few others bring the roster of pros up to 23. There would be more, but Appleby, Beem, and Leonard are MIA this year. It's a similar story with the courses. There are only 18 of them now, as opposed to 21 last year. The fantasy courses have been replaced with real locations, such as Cog Hill, TPC Boston, Westchester, Firestone, Doral, TPC Scottsdale, and East Lake. It's great to have so many real-world courses, but it's a shame they couldn't have been added to what was already there.

Hopefully you liked last year's game modes, because they are exactly the same this time around; EA didn't bother to add one single thing. Some "new" game, eh? Not a whole lot has changed with the career mode, either. You can play tour events, the Fed Ex Cup, and Tiger challenge. Like in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, the Tiger challenge is arranged in a honeycomb pattern, which gives you a bit of freedom to choose the next challenge. The challenges have been shortened a bit, but they become repetitive before it's all said and done. You'll still improve your golfer by earning and disbursing attributes, as well as purchasing new equipment or clothing in the pro shop. As usual, the create-a-character feature is limited only by your imagination. The photo-face mode that lets you import a picture of yourself on the PS3 and 360 is nowhere to be found, but there is a worthless tattoo editor.

To get in the spirit of Tiger 08, we're giving you fewer screenshots than our Tiger 07 review.

Other than the controls being more sensitive and more demanding of precise timing, 08 plays the same as 07. Neither the three-click swing nor the new draw-and-fade mechanic from the PS3 version made it to the PS2. Putting has gone largely untouched. You can bring up the putt preview by hitting the X button, and then putt the ball to see where it's going to go, but the stroke doesn't count. You're given a limited amount of time for the entire round in which you can preview your shots, but unless you use it on every single putt, you'll have enough for most of the difficult ones. This is an interesting way of making putting less frustrating; however, it makes it a bit too easy, especially if you've lined up the putt reasonably well before previewing it. You can skip your opponents' turns with speed play enabled, which is nice.

It shouldn't come as any surprise that Tiger 08 looks the same as Tiger 07, though the frame rate seems to be worse. It frequently hitches in the middle of putts, and also when you move your aiming cursor. There's not a whole lot of detail in the textures, and there's a hefty amount of aliasing. But the graphics certainly aren't terrible, and they don't get in the way of the gameplay. The professional golfers look reasonably like their real-life counterparts, but the fictitious golfers look the best thanks to their unique animations and design. Like every other Tiger Woods game in the past few years, the audio is passable but could stand for some new commentary.

Only a fool would spend $40 on Tiger Woods 08. If you own 07, it would be like buying the same game twice. If you don't own 07, you'd be better off buying that one because it costs half as much and actually has more courses.

  • Leave Blank
  • It still plays like Tiger Woods
  • You can skip your opponents' turns
  • The big new feature is a tattoo editor
  • No new play modes
  • New courses come at the expense of old ones

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 Review

A disappointing effort..

Nate Ahearn Avatar

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 should be the last Tiger game to make its way onto the PS2. The almost total lack of effort to change anything since the '09 edition is disappointing to say the least. It's still a functional game of golf, despite the busted XP system and boring list of modes, but that doesn't mean that you should invest your money in this year's game if you have any of the Tiger games from years past.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07

Not a patch on 06? Or just a patch on 06?

There's a school of thought (founded and attended by me, in this paragraph, although I suspect others have enrolled in their own heads) that says we'd be better off if Electronic Arts adopted a subscription model for Tiger Woods. In a sense, it already has: each September, you pay a flat fee for a box of new toys, and the presence of old save-data gives you a small boost (in this case, a bonus per-hole for using a particular brand of golf-club). Tiger Woods 07 is hardly disguising the fact it's the same game as last year with a few upgrades - they've even put little "New!" icons next to things that have been introduced or altered.

In many ways, Tiger Woods 07 is the most complete Tiger to date, with every eventuality covered. If you're returning, you get a bonus. A range of tutorial videos allows you to learn everything from scratch, if needs be, or to simply pick out the "New!" bits. You can select between standard and alternative swing types for tee and approach shots (either using the left analogue stick for everything, or using the right analogue as a "Shape Stick" to bend your strokes) as well as putting (grid lines and "ideal putt" camera, or caddy tips telling you roughly where to aim on a naked green).

You can create a custom character to now spectacular levels of depth (although randomising usually builds you an unspeakably mole-ridden face). You can customise your swing. You can change your clothes. You can set the game up to skip all post-shot animations and proceed to the next one by pressing R1. You can play alone or build up a team, with four-player games online and off, and new game modes to service the size of your group. You can build a team of AI players.

tiger woods pga tour ps2

You can build in handicaps to challenge yourself (as in, ouch-my-leg-fell-off handicaps, rather than golfing ones - trying to win without hitting trees, starting with a shot deficit, etc.). You can play in "Real Time Events" - challenges that crop up depending on the actual day you're playing. You can play through a career mode, building up experience for your character, or take part in the PGA Tour. You can play on 21 courses, and while there's no Ryder Cup, you can always opt for the K Club and pretend. You can get really, really good and turn off all the shot assistance.

In short (and I bet you're gagging for that now), it has pretty much everything. And those things it doesn't have aren't the sorts of things it needs another manufacturing run to add. Why not make the first of the next-generation Tigers the last boxed run, and then hold off again until there's real change to be made?

Because otherwise, I'm going to give you 7/10s until my hands fall off.

The control and experience systems in Tiger Woods 07 propel you (and the ball) through the game as ever they have. Depending on your choice of shot type, you either pull the left stick back and push through to swing, angling it diagonally to add fade or draw; or you do the first part, and use the right stick to change the bend. During and after, you can hammer various shoulder buttons to add boost and spin. As before, you need to be quite dextrous, but it's forgiving enough that even a complete novice can juggle the various contortions to professional standard within a short space of time.

tiger woods pga tour ps2

You have all the usual readouts on the screen to help you select your club: advice on what percentage of the maximum strength you'll need to apply to reach the point you're aiming at, what direction the wind's heading and how fast, the relative height of the terrain you're shooting from and aiming for, and so on. On the green, you can either judge by the contours and pace-arrows, or aim for a spot dictated by the caddy (e.g. 11 inches left, 2 foot long). Play the game with all these assists on, as they are by default, and you'll be outscoring Tiger in no time. I got an eagle on the first hole I loaded up. Turn all this off, or play without due consideration, and things become trickier. And as ever, you gain experience points to spend on shot power, accuracy, striking, approach, spin, putting, recovery and luck, so even if you're only keeping pace with the world's best from the first tee, you'll be doing laps around him by the time you've put a dent in the sofa.

With "Rivals" mode abandoned, this year's "Team Tiger" stuff is a sort of single-player co-operative campaign. You unlock up to four team slots, pick bested adversaries to join you, and some tasks involve splitting the effort across the team, which obviously hinders experience dispersal. Get some friends around and you can of course toss the pad between each other and play actual co-op.

There's certainly a lot to do besides that if you've got pals over, mind, with new team-play modes and some suitable for two-player. Along with stroke- and match-play, speed golf and other traditional inclusions, there's elimination mode (after each hole, the loser is eliminated; last team standing wins), bloodsome and greensome (four-player games; four tee off, but only one ball for each team is played for the rest of the hole, with the difference being greensome has your team select your team's ball, while bloodsome lets the opposition), and one-ball (you and your opponent share a single ball, and the winner is the fellow who holes out). The former pair play out fairly inevitably, and entertainingly. Once your friends have gone home, you can opt for Skills 18 and other challenge-based modes if you're bored of the main campaigns.

tiger woods pga tour ps2

It's comprehensive then, but if anything it's a lesser game than Tiger Woods 06 was on current-gen formats, partly because Rivals mode took ages to play through and Team Tiger does not. With the exception of a couple of new multiplayer modes, most of the changes are superficial, and what's new is hit and miss. Caddy tips are generally easier to use than contours for putting, in my experience. Driving through the ball still feels weak and flimsy. And while there are lots of mini-challenges (like getting closest-to-the-pin) and the omnipresent Trophy Balls to try and collect (hole-in-one, eagle, longest-putt, etc.), Tiger Woods has never been all that hard to play, and working through the list of achievements you've already collected in past editions is laborious rather than invigorating.

As for the new modes, I did enjoy bloodsome, but elimination was a game my friends and I invented three years ago, and one-ball is a bit rubbish. The idea is that you have to play at least half the distance to the hole before your opponent takes over, and that failing that, or aiming for hazards, gives them two turns to try and hole out. But with hazards and tricky lies never that hard to escape in Tiger, and putting as the only real strategic element, you might as well be playing on the practice green.

There's little argument overall that Tiger Woods 07 is the best possible starting point for golf-game beginners (not least because EA will probably turn off the servers for Tiger Woods 06 a year sooner than they will these), but anybody who was getting a bit bored of the same formula last year will be even less impressed with this outing. It certainly looks nice, and Xbox 360 owners who avoided the weaker 360 version of 06 and waited for this ought to be relatively pleased (we'll take a look soon), but as I rolled around the K Club yesterday that just made me feel like grabbing the nearest squirrel and branding him with "New!" logo. Maybe a download or subscription model's a silly alternative (ask the Gran Turismo HD thread), but they ought to think of something, because the other alternative is just telling you not to buy it unless you're new, or really desperate.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09

The sport of golf is recreated in detail in the video game Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09. Compared to the version from 2008, this game is missing various playing options, one of which is an online multiplayer component. The traditional PGA Tour career mode and the EA Sports Cup are all left. The latter includes playing on courses that are only three holes long. Players who participate in competitions and accomplish goals earn experience and skill points. These can be put toward leveling up their character and increasing their capabilities. The player can select either the two-click controls or the True Swing controls. With the former, the player must click two or three times at the appropriate intervals to set the hit conditions. In contrast, with the latter, the player uses the analog stick to simulate the hitting movement. There are a total of twenty-seven licensed players and twenty different courses.
