But getting to the massive agricultural terraces, intricate stone constructions, and epic hilltop views of this UNESCO World Heritage site isn't cheap, and it involves some trickier-than-usual logistics. Here's how to expertly navigate your way to Peru's most famous destination, plus our top tips for enjoying your visits to the nearby cities of Cusco and Aguas Calientes on your way.

Machu Picchu is one of the world's most dreamed-about destinations . Mystery is at the center of Machu Picchu's appeal, as the city holds many secrets about the ancient Incan Empire. Knowledge-seekers will find plenty of interesting tidbits to mull over about the city's archaeological significance and the various scientific and religious practices of the Incans who built the magnificent site.

Alongside this adventure through time, a trip to Machu Picchu offers an opportunity to experience Peruvian culture and gastronomy . If you stay a while, you can even make trips to many of the country's other historical wonders, like the perplexing and enormous images etched into the hills of the Nazca Valley , the origins of which are not entirely understood. Best Time to Visit

Machu Picchu is open year-round. October through April is the official rainy season, but it can rain at any time. And while peak season is July and August, you should always expect crowds. Sundays can be the most crowded, because that's when people who live in the Cusco province are allowed into the site for free, in addition to the daily visitor limit.

Morning? Afternoon? There is no perfect time to visit Machu Picchu. These days, the site is crowded at all hours and the weather is unpredictable. However, during the rainy season, the mornings are most likely to be foggy. Depending on your disposition, fog ruins the view or adds a patina of mystery to it. Afternoons can be slightly less crowded as day-trippers return to the train station for their trip back to Cusco.

How to Get Acclimated to the Altitude

The last thing you need on your day in Machu Picchu is a case of altitude sickness . Wherever you're coming from is probably much, much lower than Cusco (over 11,000 feet) or Machu Picchu (just shy of 8,000 feet). Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination, so you can adjust gradually and avoid common symptoms like nausea, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath.

Unless you've booked a trip to Machu Picchu that requires an overnight stay in Cusco, we recommend immediately taking the train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes (officially called Machu Picchu Pueblo), the town nearest Machu Picchu. Spend a night or two getting used to the relatively low elevation of Aguas Calientes, at about 6,700 feet, then explore Machu Picchu before returning to Cusco. You can also spend time elsewhere in the Sacred Valley, which, by nature, is lower in elevation than the surrounding mountains. Avoid alcohol and physical exertion while acclimatizing and drink as much water or coca tea as you can stand to help your body slowly adjust to the thinner air.

How to Get There

If Machu Picchu is your goal, you will have to fly into the capital of Lima and then catch a connecting flight to Cusco. From there, the easiest way to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu is to take the train to Aguas Calientes, a scenic 3.5-hour trip each way along tracks that run right along the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley, with dramatic canyon walls on either side. However, note that the so-called Cusco train station is actually in the nearby town of Poroy. It's a cheap taxi ride, but give yourself at least an hour to get from central Cusco to the train station. Traffic in Cusco can be brutal and seemingly never-ending road work makes things even more congested.

There are three train companies to choose from: Inca Rail , Peru Rail , and the Belmond Hiram Bingham train . The Hiram Bingham service is on a gorgeous train gleaming with brass and polished wood and includes a white tablecloth meal with wine during your journey. It's also much more expensive than Inca Rail or Peru Rail, both of which offer comfortable passage on different types of trains — including ones designed with panoramic windows for an additional fee. Whichever train you choose, book as far in advance as possible. Tickets sell out weeks ahead in some months.

If train tickets from Cusco are sold out, all is not lost. Try to buy another train ticket to Aguas Calientes that departs from the town of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley, or vice versa. Taxis and minivans between Ollantaytambo and Cusco (just over an hour each way) are plentiful. If you have the time, plan an overnight in Ollantaytambo to check out the town, which still features many Incan-built streets and buildings, as well as the archaeological site of the same name. Arrive as early as possible at the site to enjoy the sunrise light and beat the tour buses.

You can also stay overnight in Urubamba, a 20-minute drive from Ollantaytambo, which has a bevy of luxury and boutique hotels such as Tambo del Inka, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa ; Sol y Luna, Relais & Châteaux ; and Aranwa Sacred Valley Hotel & Wellness .

How to Get Tickets

Even when you buy your ticket in advance, guides are required at Machu Picchu, whether you're on an organized tour or traveling independently. Hire one outside the gates, or make a booking in Aguas Calientes.

To control overtourism at Machu Picchu, the Peruvian government has set up a ticketing system , split up into five different circuits. Tickets must be purchased in advance and cost approximately $42 for adults and $20 for students and minors. When you book online, you will be able to see exactly how many tickets are available for that day. On the day of your visit, you will choose between one of the five circuits. The stricter controls help to protect the site from the effects of too many visitors. Before you book, carefully look at the circuits and see which landmarks they include.

You'll need a separate ticket to climb Huayna Picchu (Circuit 4 + Wayna Picchu Mountain). The view looking down on the Incan ruins is a highlight for many but be aware that some sections of this strenuous trail are very narrow and steep. You'll have the choice of starting your climb between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. Go at 10 a.m.; there's a better chance any clouds will have lifted by then.

You can also climb to the peak of Machu Picchu, but this too requires a separate ticket (Macchupicchu Mountain + Circuit 3) and good knees. The trail is almost entirely stairs. You'll have the choice of starting your climb between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Although it was open in the past, you will also need a separate ticket to make the short walk to the Inca Bridge (Circuit 1 or 2 + Inka Bridge). It's less than an hour round trip along a mostly flat trail to check out a precarious trail, now closed, which the Incas built along a rock face. The newest route, as of 2021, to Huchyu Picchu (Circuit 4 + Huchuypicchu Mountain) is also available with a separate ticket. It's shorter and easier than the other mountain hikes and you'll get a unique perspective of the ancient city.

The Inca Trail and Other Treks

The other way to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu is to walk as part of an organized multiday Machu Picchu trek along the Inca Trail, a section of one of the hundreds of Incan roads built as the empire expanded. It might sound intimidating, but thousands of people make this trek every year. Dozens of tour operators offer Inca Trail hikes to Machu Picchu, with varying durations and levels of comfort (though all require camping). Note that the Inca Trail leading to Machu Picchu is closed for the entire month of February every year for maintenance.

For a different kind of Peru experience, some tour operators combine a visit to the iconic site with other activities or less-trodden routes to equally impressive sights in the Peruvian highlands. For example, the Inca Jungle Tour combines hiking, biking, rafting, and zip-lining on your way to Machu Picchu, and luxury tour operator andBeyond offers several Machu Picchu itineraries.

You can also drive (most of the way) to Machu Picchu from Cusco to the town of Hydroelectrica (there's a hydroelectric plant there). From there it's a three-hour hike up to Aguas Calientes and then on to Machu Picchu. Many tour companies in Cusco offer this route as a one- or two-day trip using private vans. Some of the most popular alternative routes include Salkantay Mountain, the second city of Choquequirao, and the Lares region.

Salkantay Mountain

For those who prefer a less crowded experience or want to see and experience other aspects of Peru on their way to Machu Picchu, there are many hiking alternatives: the second most popular way to hike to Machu Picchu is around massive Salkantay Mountain, one of the most imposing peaks in the Peruvian Andes at 20,569 feet. Many tour companies offer Salkantay Treks, but Apus Peru, an established and well-regarded Cusco tour company with a focus on sustainable and responsible tourism, offers an express trek , which shaves a day off the normal itinerary for those who want to push their physical limits on their way to Machu Picchu.

Choquequirao

Travelers interested in archaeology should consider the Choquequirao trek with a Machu Picchu extension. This itinerary includes spectacular (but very tough) hiking in the steep Apurimac Canyon and exploration of the Choquequirao archaeological site before arriving in Aguas Calientes and then exploring Machu Picchu.

Unfortunately, there are no ancient Incan hotels you can stay in when you arrive at Machu Picchu, and even those who arrive by the Inca Trail usually do so with camping tents. The closest you can get is the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge , which gives you easy access to the site, but you'll be far away from the dining and shopping of Aguas Calientes — either a strenuous 90-minute climb down the mountain or a harrowing 30-minute drive.

For a luxury stay in Aguas Calientes, you have two main options: the elegant Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo , located near the train station, and design-forward Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel , a boutique property near the foot of Machu Picchu Mountain. But there are dozens of mid-range options, too, plus super-affordable hostels for backpackers like Nativus Hostel , which also has private rooms.

Where to Stay in Cusco

As a whole, Aguas Calientes isn't exactly on the cutting edge of Peruvian cuisine. But walk down Av. Pachacutec and you'll find low-key eateries and bars, some serving a selection of Peru's growing crop of craft beers. There are also high-end restaurants inside the two luxury hotels, Inkaterra and Sumaq, which are open to non-guests. More low-key traveler favorites include Restaurante Indio Feliz , serving up French-Peruvian dishes, and Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant , where you can pair local specialties with craft beer from all over the country.

Where to Eat and Drink in Cusco

Significantly larger than Aguas Calientes, Cusco is one place where you should have no problem finding great restaurants. Cicciolina is a classic tapas bar that feels like a local hangout, serving international and Andean dishes out of an open kitchen. Kion, from the growing Cusco Restaurants group , is a stylish place to enjoy Cantonese cuisine. The decor is Chinese vintage, the flavors are subtle, and the atmosphere is festive.

Located on the second floor of a Colonial building, the restaurant offers haute Andean cuisine (alpaca carpaccio, quinoa with duck) in an airy and well-lit space. When you arrive at the citadel, you'll have to follow the route outlined on your ticket so you may want to study up on some of the city's most exciting sites before you decide. Among the most important are the Sacred Stone, an astronomical clock that corresponds with the spring and autumnal equinoxes, and the Temple of the Sun, which is a great example of the Incans' impressive masonry skills.

During your visit, make sure you have some spare cash (small bills and coins) in your pocket because you will need them to access the only bathroom at the site entrance. You will also need your passport to get into Machu Picchu, which means that to use the bathroom or grab food you should have your passport ready. Overlooking the Urubamba River, the site of Machu Picchu sits above the Sacred Valley – located in the Cusco region of Peru.

How can I get to Machu Picchu?

Many travellers fly into the capital of Cusco before taking the train or choosing a hiking tour. The stepping stone to Machu Picchu is Ollantaytambo, about 1.5 hours away from Cusco by bus.

From Ollantaytambo, the most common ways to get to Machu Picchu are:

• Hiking the Inca Trail (one way to Machu Picchu)
• Taking the equally scenic and rewarding Quarry Trail
• Trekking the challenging 8-day Choquequirao Trail

Can I still hike if I take the train?

So, you want to experience the Inca Trail but aren't quite up for the entire hike?

The one-day option takes you by train part of the way where you hop off and trek the trade highway of the ancient Inca empire.

You will arrive at the Sun Gate in the afternoon to take in the views of Machu Picchu.

Is hiking the only way to get to Machu Picchu?

On all of our trips that visit Machu Picchu, you can choose the rail journey instead of the hike – simply specify while booking that you’d prefer the train option. There's no extra cost for this, though please note fees may apply if you decide to change to the train option after your Inca Trail permit has already been purchased.

When is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?

You can visit Machu Picchu all year round.  The most popular time, and therefore the most crowded, is in June and July. 

Low cloud cover during the dry season from April to October also means cold nights on hiking trails, so you'll need thermals for a good night’s sleep. 

The wet season is from November to March. Temperatures rise and the region receives heavy rainfall, so waterproofs are essential if you're hiking. If you don't mind a bit of rain, the plus side is that crowds are smaller. If you want to hike the Inca Trail, note that it closes every year in February for maintenance.

Can you get to Machu Picchu in a day?

Yes, you can. Starting with an early rise in the morning, take a 1.5-hour bus ride to Ollantaytambo, then a 2.5-hour train to Aguas Calientes, followed by a 30-minute bus to Machu Picchu.

You will have a couple of hours to visit Machu Picchu and then return to Cusco the same way.

None of our trips visit Machu Picchu this way, as we believe it doesn’t allow enough time to explore (and really enjoy) the site and the Sacred Valley area.

How high is Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is found deep in the cloud forest at 2440 m (7972 ft) above sea level, sitting at 1000 m (3280 ft) lower than Cusco.

What does this mean for you? In terms of altitude, you're unlikely to experience any altitude issues at Machu Picchu itself.

But be aware, trekking to Machu Picchu involves walking up and down several steep stairs, ramps and terraces at various altitudes, which can be strenuous.

Will the altitude affect me?

Most people start to feel the effects of altitude at over 2000 m (6561 ft) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the causes and effects of traveling at altitude. Monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly.

It is essential to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader immediately if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have health concerns before the trip, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition or are taking any medication.

Do I need a permit to hike to Machu Picchu?

Everyone hiking to Machu Picchu via the iconic Inca Trail or the shorter Inca Trail Express requires a permit. You don't need a permit to trek via the Quarry or Choquequirao trails.

If you do the Inca Trail with Intrepid, our adventure consultants secure your permit for you so you can focus on getting excited – just make sure you have your passport details handy at the time of booking.

Permits are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so booking well in advance is critical.

We endeavor to purchase your permit within two working days of receiving all necessary information.

What should I pack for Machu Picchu?

For a day trip exploring Machu Picchu, we recommended taking a small backpack with the essentials: sunscreen, hat, water bottle (filled before departing), a few snacks and mosquito repellent. It helps to wear breathable pants, a long shirt and a waterproof jacket – since the UV index is higher in the Andes and the site is prone to rainfall.

What is Wayna Picchu?

Wayna Picchu (also known also as Huayna Pichu or Wayna Pikchu) means ‘young peak’ in Quechua – although the mountain appears anything but young, towering behind Machu Picchu.

Known as the ‘stairs of death’, the hair-raising climb takes about three hours to return. More recently, a cap of 400 people a day has been introduced on the number of visitors allowed to climb.

Can I climb Wayna Picchu with Intrepid Travel?

We have performed risk assessments on all our optional activities, and unfortunately, we don't consider climbing Wayna Picchu a safe activity at this stage.

Reaching Wayna Picchu involves climbing steep, narrow and exposed sets of stairs, and we just can't guarantee your safety.

Our leaders are specifically prohibited from assisting you in visiting Wayna Picchu.

What are the toilet facilities like at Machu Picchu?

There are public toilets located at the main entrance of Machu Picchu and none after entering the site – so make sure you time your stop before heading off to explore.

Take some coins with you as there is a small fee to use the toilet facilities.

If you're hoping to visit this impressive site, it will take some time to arrive — and you might need to take a collection of planes, buses and trains to make it there. Know, too, that some mask and vaccination requirements are still in place for visiting Machu Picchu, so you'll want to check the latest guidance and prepare accordingly.

To help you map out your adventure to the "Lost City of the Incas," here's a step-by-step guide with all you need to know about getting to Machu Picchu, including how to use your points and miles for the journey.

How to get to Lima, Peru, from the US

Machu Picchu sits a few hundred miles southeast of Lima, Peru's capital, high up in the Andes Mountains. Since getting to Machu Picchu itself takes several steps, a nonstop flight from the U.S. to this bustling city is often the preferred way to go, though you could also reach Peru from another Latin or Central American hub.

Should you decide to fly directly from the U.S., you'll find that there are various options for flying to Lima nonstop.

American Airlines flies nonstop to Lima's Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) from Miami International Airport (MIA) and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) . LATAM Airlines offers service to the city from MIA, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) , while SkyTeam partner Delta Air Lines flies from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) . United Airlines also flies to Lima from Houston 's George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) , and Florida dwellers have even more options from MIA thanks to JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines , both of which fly nonstop to Lima.

Since Delta and United use dynamic pricing, you'll have to try your luck when it comes to getting solid award fares. However, you can use credit card rewards to help you accrue enough miles to cover the cost of flights. Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer to United, while American Express Membership Rewards transfer to Delta. Those with Delta elite status may want to fly with LATAM since Medallion status and benefits are recognized thanks to a reciprocal partnership between the two airlines .

If you need to stock up on LATAM Pass miles, you can transfer Marriott Bonvoy points to LATAM Pass at a 3:1 ratio, with a 5,000-point bonus for every 60,000 points you transfer. Oneword flyers should consider flying American. The airline does publish an award chart , though it's rare to find prices as low as specified due to dynamic pricing. However, if you're lucky (and traveling on off-peak dates), you might find a one-way MileSAAver Off Peak award ticket for 17,500 AAdvantage miles in economy or a one-way MilesSAAver award ticket for 30,000 miles in business class.

For those sans points and miles, tickets on Spirit from Miami to Lima can often cost less than $300 round trip. Just know that everything from your carry-on bag to seat selection and beyond will cost extra on Spirit.

How to get to Cusco, Peru, and the Sacred Valley from Lima

No, you're not at the base of the Andes just yet. The next step in your Peruvian adventure should be to get from Lima to Cusco. The most direct way to arrive is by plane, which takes about an hour from Lima. There are other options like the bus, but considering it can take around 25 hours (or more), flying is the quickest choice.

The ideal option (especially for Delta elite flyers) is LATAM, which offers one-way award tickets for a little more than 5,000 LATAM miles, plus fees. But you may not want to bother with miles, as tickets cost around $50 each way. Those ready to brave a low-cost carrier might be able to shave $10 or $15 off LATAM's price by flying with a carrier like Sky Airline, JetSmart Airlines or Viva Air Colombia.

Once in Cusco, you'll want to spend at least one night in the city itself or the surrounding Sacred Valley , as getting to Machu Picchu will still take a considerable amount of time after arriving.

How to get from Cusco to Aguas Calientes, Peru

This is where the fun really begins. The quickest way to arrive at the gateway to Machu Picchu, the town of Aguas Calientes, from Cusco is by train, which takes around three hours. There's also a two-hour train ride you can take from Ollantaytambo, Peru, to the site, should you decide to stay in the Sacred Valley before continuing your journey. Other options, including a bus and hiking, are available as well.

The most luxurious train to Machu Picchu is the Hiram Bingham , a Belmond-operated train that costs around $500 one-way. Aside from this splurge, the main trains — known as the Expedition and the Vistadome — are operated by PeruRail . The Expedition trains cost about $60 each way, while the Vistadome trains cost around $75 per one-way ride. The latter provides an enhanced experience that includes snacks and even a fashion show where travelers can view and purchase items made from alpaca wool.

Inca Rail is another train company that offers various options for travelers between Cusco and Aguas Calientes via its Voyager and 360 trains. Prices are comparable to the PeruRail trains, and, like PeruRail, Inca Rail also offers an exclusive train experience. Inca Rail's Private train gives you and your group an entire train car to yourselves, where you'll enjoy a three-course meal, Champagne and a Peruvian cooking class as you travel. This particular service even offers a private bus to Machu Picchu from the train station.

If you can't decide between Inca Rail and PeruRail, use budget and timing to decide. Pick a train that's the right price at a time that's most convenient for you, as the services are relatively similar. LATAM Pass frequent flyers may want to select Inca Rail trains, as you can connect your account and earn one LATAM Pass mile for every dollar spent on Inca Rail.

Trains to Machu Picchu leave from the Poroy train station, which is located 11 miles outside of Cusco. If you're staying in or exploring the Sacred Valley, you can catch the train from the Ollantaytambo train station, which is less than 40 miles northwest of Cusco. The last stop on each route is the Aguas Calientes station.

Bus and walking

Budget travelers (or anyone up for a unique, scenic experience) should consider the shuttle and walking trail option known as the Hidroeléctrica. Since there are no actual roads that lead into the town of Aguas Calientes, you can't drive all the way, so while you'll take a bus the majority of the way, a three-hour trek is required at the end.

To partake in this option, you'll need to book a spot in a group shuttle (your hotel or any tour operator can help you book one) that departs from either Cusco or Ollantaytambo. The journey will cost anywhere between $10 and $25 per person, depending on the bus and how many people are in your group. You'll weave through the Andes as you approach Aguas Calientes, stopping for lunch in a town called Santa María. Once the shuttle drops you off at a location that seems to be in the middle of nowhere — the Hidroeléctrica — you will enjoy a peaceful walk alongside train tracks for about three hours until you arrive at Aguas Calientes.

For this journey, be sure to pack light, as you'll be carrying your belongings on your back. Some Cusco hotels let you leave larger suitcases or luggage in their storage rooms if you plan on returning to Cusco again for a night after your Machu Picchu visit, so consider one of these properties if you don't want to bring all of your belongings during the walk.

There are various guided treks that end in Machu Picchu. Depending on the option you choose, you'll find that they last anywhere from a few days to weeks.

Hiking the Inca Trail — the most famous route — starts from a base near Cusco. Additionally, there are alternative treks that leave from other bases in Cusco and the Sacred Valley, including the Lares Trek and the Salkantay Trek. These treks are guided and typically include meals and porters. It's best to book through an online travel provider or agency.

In some instances, travelers have been able to walk the entire route along the train tracks from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. However, this free, eight-hour walk can be unsafe at times due to train tunnels. It's highly monitored by track guards, so we don't recommend this option.

The final step: Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu

By this point, you're so close, yet so far. Aguas Calientes is the gateway to Machu Picchu, but you are not at the ruins just yet. You still have to make the vertical ascent to the citadel itself, which is a grueling trek that will take you about 4,000 feet uphill.

Anyone planning to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain may not want to embark on this walk, as it can be exhausting (though you can always walk back down, which is easier). If you do want to walk, follow the Camino Peatonal Trail. Leave early since this walk will take you a few hours to complete.

An alternative way to reach Machu Picchu is to take the bus. Buses leave every 10 to 15 minutes from Aguas Calientes, starting at 5:30 a.m. and running until 3:30 p.m. Keep in mind that people line up to catch the first bus, so it's best to arrive at the bus stop early. The ride up takes 20 to 30 minutes, and the last bus returns to Aguas Calientes at 5:30 p.m.

You can buy bus tickets in advance or on the day of your visit starting at 5 a.m. Bus tickets cost $12 per one-way ride or $24 round trip. Buy your tickets at the bus station in Aguas Calientes or another certified spot in Cusco or Aguas Calientes. Some agencies can help you book them online ahead of time, too, though you'll need to pay an additional fee. If you've booked your Machu Picchu tickets through a tour agency, ask about bus tickets, as some will include them.

Remember that you can always book your own Machu Picchu tickets online through the official website . Don't forget to also bring your passport. You'll need to show it to enter the ruins.

Bottom line

If it seems like Machu Picchu is hard to get to, you're right. The process requires several steps thanks to its remote location atop a mountain.

Know, though, that you don't have to do the trip all in one go. Take a few days in Lima, some time in Cusco and the Sacred Valley, and even a couple of nights in Aguas Calientes to prepare for your trek. Or, consider staying put in one of these destinations after your Machu Picchu adventure to unwind.

Who wouldn’t want to experience the almost mystical “Lost City of the Incas”, situated so high up in the jagged Andes Mountains that it’s unimaginable how it was even built, much less how they survived, and thrived, in such an isolated environment.

It holds the same mysterious appeal as far off ancient civilizations like Egypt and Jerusalem. Machu Picchu is, of course, a UNESCO World Heritage site . A trip to Machu Picchu is much more than just a vacation. It’s a journey. There are many ways that this will be one of the most exciting and fulfilling journeys you’ll ever embark upon.

That’s why we’ve put together these tips for visiting Machu Picchu. You’ll likely fly into Lima from the U.S. and have an overnight stay in the capital city of Lima before going onward to Cuzcu. The stopover is a blessing, because once you reach Cuzco, you’ll need time to acclimate to the altitude, and this task is harder while also dealing with jetlag.

Don’t go in thinking that the journey to Machu Picchu will be an easy one. It can be a very tiring and long journey, all told, with flights, train, bus and walking distance. But don’t be discouraged, because the end goal is well worth it.

Also be aware that the Machu Picchu park administration has made significant changes to the way they deal with tickets and visitors in 2023 moving forward for the preservation and conservation of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Changes to Tourist Policy

Machu Picchu has new visiting rules starting in 2023 , including the following:

• The introduction of 5 different circuits to visit the Inca site.
• There are only 4,500 tickets available per day for Machu Picchu.
• All tourists must be led by a tour guide in order to preserve the site.
• Tourist groups can have a maximum of 10 people per guide.
• Reentry to the site is prohibited.
• The guided tour duration is 2 hours in order to free up room for more groups.

Getting Tickets to Machu Picchu

Pro Tip: No tickets are sold at the entrance, so you must secure them in advance. If you’re traveling during high season, I would purchase tickets a month or more in advance, to avoid disappointment.

The easiest possible way to see Machu Picchu is to book a tour from Cuzco. I recommend this tour by ExploorPeru that includes train, entrance tickets, guide, shuttle bus & private transport. You can go from Cuzco all in one day, or go to Agua Calientes to stay the night before, so it’s very flexible.

If you’d rather plan it all yourself, you can buy tickets online through the official government website or authorized agencies. As of 2023, tickets cost 152 soles ($40USD) for adults and 70 soles ($19USD) for children under 18. You’ll be charged a %5 fee to book online.

If you’re looking to hike up Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (Montana), you’ll need a special combination ticket that’s 200 soles for adults (includes Machu Picchu ticket). The Montana ticket allows re-entry to the main citadel, while the Huayna Picchu one doesn’t. If you want tickets for the Huayna Picchu mountain climb, try to buy them at least 3 months in advance because tickets are limited to 200 per day.

Machu Picchu Circuits

The Machu Picchu authorities have implemented specific circuits (or routes) for visitors to follow, aimed at safeguarding the archaeological site for years to come. The path you’ll take depends on the type of ticket you purchase.

Options include a standard Machu Picchu ticket, as well as combo tickets that add on attractions like Huchuy Picchu or the Inca Bridge (same cost), Huayna Picchu Machu or Picchu Mountain (for an extra cost) .

Which Circuit is Best for First-Time Visitors?

We recommendation getting a ‘Machu Picchu only’ ticket and following Circuit 2. This route allows you to tour the upper and lower parts of the archaeological site and includes the main parts of the Inca citadel. It takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. If this is a return trip, consider doing the ‘Machupicchu with Huayna Picchu’ ticket and taking Circuit 4. If you choose the Huayna Picchu tickets, you can only do Circuit 4.

Once you land in Cuzco, catch a bus or taxi to the town center and find your accommodations, you’ll want to settle into a routine and get as much rest as possible in order to acclimate to the elevation.

If you’re planning to hike the Inca trail to Machu Picchu, you’ll need to arrive a few days in advance to prepare yourself. The elevation is no joke and symptoms can sneak up on you, so get plenty of rest and drink lots of water and the local remedy, Coca tea.

You can also get altitude sickness pills from your doctor before leaving home or from a local pharmacy, which will help. Really, the best way to acclimate is to slow down. Take it easy and build in time to relax.

Getting to Machu Picchu from Cuzco

There are several ways to get to Machu Picchu from Cuzco.

• You can book this tour that arranges all the transportation for you (easiest possible way!).
• You can hike the Inca trail, following the route the Incas themselves took to reach the capital city. If you choose to hike, the trail is 26 miles long and trips range in length from one to four days, depending on what side trips are included. Only 200 visitors are allowed passes each day, so plan ahead, and be aware that this is a strenuous hike through a very mountainous region.
• You can buy your own tickets and take the train.

The train is perhaps the easiest way of getting there. When I went, knowing that I didn’t need to spend an enormous amount of time exploring, I chose the day trip option. The train leaves San Pedro station at 6:40am and takes about 4 hours to lumber up the mountain arriving at 10:52am in Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu, where you’ll catch the bus.

You’ll arrive around 11am at Machu Picchu and have the entire day to explore before returning on the train to Cuzco in the late afternoon. If you’re the type who likes to explore every nook and cranny, you may want to arrive in Aguas Calientes the night before and stay the night to get an early start up to the ruins, which open at 6am.

Another option is from Poroy station, which is a bit further north, which leaves at 6:40am and arrives at 9:54am. The ExploorPeru tour we recommend leaves from this station (saving you an hour on the train!)

Just be sure to plan ahead if you’re visiting in high season, as tickets are limited and you wouldn’t want to be disappointed after having traveled so far. Here’s where to book the train tickets.

Arriving in Aguas Calientes

Once you’ve arrived in Aguas Calientes, the journey up to Machu Picchu begins. You’ll need to catch a bus up to the top, which involves a whole lot of switchbacks and may not be pleasant for anyone who gets car sick. Another option is to walk up, but that is reserved for only the most fit, and it will take about an hour, while the bus takes only 20 minutes.

In high season (July & August), pre-book your bus trip , or risk waiting in an atrocious line (like 2-3 hours long) or being turned away altogether. Once you’ve reached the top, you can embark on a tour of the ancient city.

NOTE: Be aware that there are no toilets in the historic area, so you should go before you enter (there’s one at the gate). If you have to leave to use the bathroom, you will not be able to get back in! 

Machu Picchu Sanctuary is the designated area surrounding the famous Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in Peru. Nestled among the peaks of the Andes, this sanctuary serves as both a historical and a natural reserve, covering approximately 32,592 hectares.

• Circuit 1 allows you to visit the upper and lower parts of the archaeological site. This tour goes through the main buildings as well as the area of the terraces, plus the higher up terraces where you can get an iconic photo.
• Circuit 2  includes the main buildings on the citadel, plus the upper and lower parts of the archaeological site.
• Circuit 3  allows you to visit the lower main plaza of Machu Picchu, plus a visit to the Inka House, the Temple of the Sun, the Water Mirrors and the agricultural area.
• Circuit 4  includes the lower main plaza of Machu Picchu, plus a visit to the Inka House, the Temple of the Sun, the Water Mirrors, the agricultural area, and the Sacred Rock.

Main Attractions

• The Temple of the Sun : One of the most important structures, this rounded building served astronomical and religious purposes. You’ll notice its intricate stonework, as well as windows perfectly aligned with the solstices.
• Intihuatana Stone : Also known as the “Hitching Post of the Sun,” this carved rock was used for astronomical observations. It’s situated on a small hill and offers a panoramic view of the entire complex.
• Room of the Three Windows : This structure, part of the Sacred Plaza, showcases the Inca’s mastery of masonry with its trapezoidal windows and massive stones.
• The Main Plaza : This central courtyard is surrounded by temples, residences, and storehouses. It was likely a social or ceremonial gathering place and offers some of the best photo ops.

Here are some useful tips and things to expect once you arrive at Machu Picchu:

• Pack a sweater and/or rain jacket. The weather can change quickly from sunshine to fog, wind and rain. Choosing the best time to go to Machu Picchu can be a challenge, as you need to consider factors such as weather, crowds, and overall travel experience.
• You technically can’t take drinks or food into the site, but do take water and a snack in your bag anyway. They often don’t check your pack.
• Plan to skip lunch. Eat a big breakfast so you can avoid eating an expensive lunch on site or wasting time going back to Aguas Calientes in the middle of your day.
• Buy your train tickets and Machu Picchu tickets in advance online to avoid disappointment, especially during high season (April – August).
• You can get your passport stamped at the tourist office once you arrive at Machu Picchu, not far from where the bus drops off.
• Don’t underestimate altitude sickness. Take it easy, don’t overexert yourself.

Great article! In my opinion the best way into Machu Picchu is via Ollantaytambo. Skipping the ruins there is a big mistake in my opinion. Train tickets from Ollantaytambo are cheaper as well! 😀 As far as I am concerned, altitude sickness should be no problem in Machu Picchu itself (tho Cusco is 1,000 meters higher and there u will need it).

I never considered the altitude sickness, and I think that not overexerting myself is a good tip. My sister and I are planning to visit Machu Picchu for the first time, and we want a unique experience. I suffer from asthma so we will need to contact a travel guide to help us customize our experience.

Train to Machu Picchu: Everything You Need to Know

Some people trek to the Lost City of the Incas. For everyone else, there is a comfortable train to Machu Picchu . The Inca citadel is in an isolated cloud forest of Peru where the Andes merge with the Amazon Rainforest. Transportation there is understandably limited. Consequently, driving a car or taking a bus from Cusco to Aguas Calientes, the gateway town to Machu Picchu, are not options.

Machu Picchu by Train

One of the  most scenic train rides in the world is between the colonial city of Cusco and the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. PeruRail and Inca Rail operate this route and transport hundreds of travelers to the historic attraction every day.

Departing from stations in Cusco, trains en route to Machu Pichu go through a narrow gorge before dropping down to the Sacred Valley . Passengers board in Ollantaytambo and continue following the Urubamba River to the Machu Picchu Station in Aguas Calientes. The scenery during this part of the journey changes dramatically. The last stop for Macchu Picchu trains is Aguas Calientes . Then, to arrive at the UNESCO Historic Sanctuary , travelers need to take a twenty-five-minute bus ride up the mountain. The bus stop in town is only five minutes away on foot.

Machu Picchu Tours:

Bimodal Service (Bus + Train)

The railway between Cusco and Ollantaytambo closes during the rainy season, from around January until April, due to the risk of landslides that can block the route. During these months, PeruRail and Inca Rail offer bimodal service to Machu Picchu. This combination of bus and train transport only applies to passengers departing from or arriving in Cusco. Trains run year-round between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes.

Our Travel Advisors often arrange a private transfer for our travelers to take them to the Sacred Valley during bimodal service months. Our driver picks them up from their hotel in Cusco and drives them to Ollantaytambo where they catch their train to Machu Picchu.

PeruRail Bimodal Service

• PeruRail Expedition and PeruRail Vistadome trains: First, passengers board a bus at the Wanchaq Station in Cusco and drive to the station in Ollantaytambo. Then, the second part of the trip is by train to Aguas Calientes.
• Hiram Bingham:  Bimodal service for this luxury train also starts at the Wanchaq Station. But instead, passengers ride in a private bus to the Belmond Hotel Rio Sagrado in Urubamba . Then, they depart on the train from the hotel’s train station to Aguas Calientes.

Inca Rail Bimodal Service

Inca Rail bimodal service begins with a bus ride from Cusco to Ollantaytambo. First, passengers board the bus at a designated office on Avenida El Sol 843 in Cusco’s historic center near Coricancha . Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, an Inca Rail representative guides passengers a short distance to the local train station. The last part of the trip to Machu Picchu is by train.

Train Stations

Trains depart to Machu Picchu from stations in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Arrive at least thirty minutes before departure to have time for check-in and board the train.

Cusco Train Stations

Poroy station.

Poroy is a twenty-minute drive from downtown Cusco. The San Pedo Station is within walking distance of the main plaza, but our Travel Advisors often recommend the Poroy Station. Travel time to Machu Picchu from Poroy is one hour less than departing from San Pedro.

San Pedro Station

Train service in Cusco expanded in 2019 to include San Pedro. The station is across from Mercado San Pedro or San Pedro Market.

Wanchaq Station

Passengers begin their bimodal transport to Machu Picchu with PeruRail at the Wanchaq Station. This station is at the end of Avenida El Sol and a five-minute drive from the main plaza. Wanchaq is also where the PeruRail Titicaca Train to Lake Titicaca departs a few times a week.

Sacred Valley Train Stations

Ollantaytambo station.

There are many schedules for trains going and returning from Ollantaytambo . Our Machu Picchu Tours are often customized with an overnight in Ollantaytambo after an exciting day of Sacred Valley exploration. This itinerary option allows our travelers to take a morning train and arrive in Aguas Calientes with plenty of the day ahead to tour the Inca citadel.

Urubamba Station

There are far fewer departures in Urubamba than other stations. Additionally, the luxury Sacred Valley hotels , Belmond Hotel Rio Sagrado and Tambo del Inka, have private stations for their guests. Trains from Urubamba usually stop in Ollantaytambo to pick up more passengers before continuing to Machu Picchu.

PeruRail operates the majority of trains to Machu Picchu.

Belmond Hiram Bingham Train

The Hiram Bingham is a luxurious train with polished wood and plush seating. Eat a gourmet meal in the elegant dining car. Meanwhile, unlimited cocktails, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages are in the bar car. The train also has a separate observation car with glass windows for admiring the passing Andean scenery.

Roundtrip Hiram Bingham tickets offer the most all-inclusive experience package with Machu Picchu entry tickets, a guided tour, bus fare to/from Aguas Calientes, and afternoon tea at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge. Specific train services depend on a one-way or round-trip ticket(s) between Cusco and Machu Picchu.

The luxury train runs one round trip to Machu Picchu a day. However, the train does not operate on the last Sunday of every month.

Vistadome Train

The Vistadome is a middle-class train . This PeruRail top seller is the only train class with large panoramic windows. During each trip, passengers are served snacks and refreshments and can listen to informative audio about passing Andean highlights. Seats are made of artificial leather and have plenty of legroom. For those taking the Vistadome back from Machu Picchu, the onboard staff performs a fun Andean-inspired fashion show.

Vistadome has daily morning and afternoon departures from both stations in Cusco, Ollantaytambo, and Urubamba to Machu Picchu. The Vistadome is the only PeruRail train that offers service from the San Pedro Station in Cusco.

Expedition Train

The Expedition Train is the economic option for tourists. Service is simple, and light snacks and beverages are available for purchase. Air conditioning and heating ensure a comfortable temperature, and luggage is stored securely in the racks placed above the seats.

PeruRail’s Expedition train offers service from Cusco, Urubamba, and Ollantaytambo. Similar to Vistadome, the Expedition operates several daily morning and afternoon departures.

Local Train

PeruRail offers Local Train service to community residents at a special non-commercial rate. Many locals depend on the railway for business and social activities. The Local Train is not an option for most tourists . Passengers must have a national identity called a Documento Nacional de Identidad .

Private Train

The Private Machu Picchu Train is an exclusive car for a small group . Passengers receive a welcome glass of champagne, an open bar, and a three-course gourmet meal. The train car features contemporary decor with classic Andean accents. Settle into a plush armchair and soak in the beautiful scenery.

The Private Train runs daily between Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu.

First-Class Train

The First-Class Train offers a premier experience . Passengers dine on a gourmet meal, can order beverages from the open bar, and enjoy live music during the ride. The train interior features plush leather seats and ample legroom. Also, there is an observatory lounge with an outdoor balcony.

Service for the First-Class Train is between Cusco stations and Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu.

The panoramic windows of this middle-class train are tall and wide, offering passengers spectacular views. Meanwhile, ambient music plays, and passengers get a boxed meal and non-alcoholic beverages. The 360° Train is the only Inca Rail option offering WiFi and an entertainment system onboard.

The train operates between stations in Cusco and Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu. Mulitple daily itineraries are available.

Voyager Train

This budget train offers a comfortable ride to Machu Picchu at an affordable price. It’s a no-frills ride. But, the modern train has comfortable seats, and the scenery is stunning. A light meal or snack is served during some schedules.

The Voyager Train departs from stations in Cusco and Ollantaytambo. Morning, afternoon, and evening departures to Machu Picchu are available.

PeruRail Versus Inca Rail

The service details unique to PeruRail and Inca Rail are listed below. In short, both companies are great options. Quality service and comfortable amenities are offered aboard all trains to Machu Picchu.

PeruRail Service Details

• The highest number of daily departures are offered by PeruRail. More scheduling options offer more flexibility with itinerary planning.
• PeruRail offers service from Urubamba . However, Inca Rail does not.
• A lesser-known, budget option to get to Aguas Calientes is to travel by bus from Cusco to Santa Teresa and take a 20-minute train ride from the Hydroelectric Station . Only PeruRail offers service from this station.
• For interested travelers, PeruRail operates other train routes in Peru . The Titicaca Train is a day trip from Cusco to Lake Titicaca. Also, the Andean Explorer is a luxurious, multi-day train experience between Arequipa, Cusco, and Lake Titicaca.

Inca Rail Service Details

• Inca Rail is the only company that offers charter service to Machu Picchu. The Private offers an all-inclusive meal, beverage, and entertainment service.
• Passengers on Inca Rail can carry more luggage weight . Inca Rail permits 17 lbs (7kg). In contrast, PeruRail only allows 11 pounds (5 kg) per carry-on. Read about Machu Picchu luggage restrictions on the train.

Train Luggage Policy

Storage aboard Machu Picchu trains is limited. As a result, PeruRail and Inca Rail need to limit one carry-on luggage per passenger.

Many travelers need to downsize their belongings to comply with the luggage weight restrictions of each company. Fortunately, many hotels offer complimentary luggage storage for guests. Travelers can safely keep extra items at their hotel in Cusco and Sacred Valley and then collect them after visiting Machu Picchu.

PeruRail Luggage Policy: Each passenger can carry-on a bag or backpack with a maximum weight limit of 11 pounds (5 kg). The luggage cannot exceed 62 inches (157 cm) in height, length, and width.

Inca Rail Luggage Policy: Each passenger can carry-on one piece of luggage with a maximum weight limit of 17 pounds (8 kg). The bag cannot be more than 46 inches (118 cm) in height, length, and width.

Trains Versus Treks

The majority of travelers opt for the train for comfort, convenience, and limited time. An adventurous trek is the only alternative to Machu Picchu.

COVID-19 Safety Protocols

Passengers need to sign a COVID-19 symptomatology form that states they are symptom-free before boarding. During the entire ride, passengers and train employees must wear a mask, use a face shield, and practice social distancing. Several trains also operate are a reduced seating capacity. For now, the food and beverage service are suspended aboard.

Train Tickets

Train tickets to Machu Picchu regularly sell out during the peak dry season in June, July, and August. Therefore, it’s smart to have your transport reservations along with hotel accommodation and tours booked as far in advance as possible.

You’ll need to factor in many costs – travel, entry tickets, accommodation, food, and possibly a guide. Many travelers, however, believe it’s worth every dime.

So, how much does a trip to Machu Picchu cost?

Here, we break it down into different factors including entry tickets, transport, accommodation, and fees for recommended tour operators. I visited last year but we try and best to keep our articles up-to-date so you can find the current pricing for a trip to Machu Picchu!

While it is possible to visit Machu Picchu on a budget of $100 USD or less, the cheapest option may not always provide the best experience.

Here is an overview of the estimated costs for a trip to Machu Picchu; read on to understand how the different costs were decided:

Machu Picchu, despite its growing popularity, remains secluded thanks to the efforts of the Peruvian Government and local communities, which protect its value and integrity as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Consequently, you won’t find any cities in close proximity to the site; the nearest city, Cusco, is 72 miles (115 km) away.

To reach Machu Picchu from Cusco , you have several transport options: the train, which is the easiest and most popular choice; a bus or van; or the adventurous, multi-day option of hiking along the ancient Incan pilgrimage routes.

Along the way, there are several charming towns between Cusco and Machu Picchu that make for great places to stop and explore. If you have extra time, take a leisurely tour from one town to another and enjoy a stay at one of  these fantastic hotels  on the way to Machu Picchu.

Unless you choose to follow in the footsteps of the Incas and hike to the Sun Gate, your final destination will be Aguas Calientes: a small town at the foothills of cloud forest mountain ranges, where Machu Picchu is located. It’s important to note that there are no roads connecting Aguas Calientes to other towns; only train tracks provide access.

Some adventurous travelers opt to hike along the train tracks from Ollantaytambo – a town in the Sacred Valley located 34 miles (55 km) from Aguas Calientes – but this route is not recommended due to safety concerns, particularly during the rainy season. Although it offers a free and relatively easy option, you’ll need to exercise caution.

The final leg of your journey to reach Machu Picchu involves a 3.7-mile (6 km) winding road up the mountain. You can choose between a steep, 2-hour climb or a quicker 20-minute bus ride.

1. Getting to the Cusco (from within Peru)

The closest airport to Machu Picchu is Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco. While you may find direct flights to Cusco from your country of origin, it’s advisable to consider first visiting other cities at lower altitudes – such as Lima and Arequipa – before heading to Cusco. This will allow you to better adjust to the high altitude.

Here are the estimated average prices for round-trip domestic flights to Cusco (excluding baggage fees) with the main airlines in Peru:

Cost of accommodation in Cusco

Cusco sits at an altitude of 11,200 ft (3,400 m). If you are arriving from a much lower altitude, you’ll likely experience altitude sickness. While it typically takes about two weeks to fully overcome altitude sickness (known as soroche to Peruvians), even a couple of days of adjustment can be helpful.

Regardless of your budget, Cusco offers a range of options to accommodate your needs during those initial days of rest and acclimatization.

A mid-range boutique hotel near the Plaza de Armas, such as the  MOAF Boutique Hotel , typically costs around $80 USD per night.

For those seeking a more luxurious experience, there are options like  Inkaterra La Casona  ($440 USD Double), a 16th-century colonial mansion with only 11 bedrooms.

We recommend staying in Cusco for at least two nights: one night before your visit to Machu Picchu and one night after. This means you should budget around $160 USD for a comfortable stay in the Cusco area.

2. Getting to Aguas Calientes (from Cusco)

Transportation.

As mentioned earlier, the only way to reach Aguas Calientes – other than walking – is by train. You can either take a direct train ride from Cusco or ride a minibus across the Sacred Valley of the Incas to the town of Ollantaytambo, which is the closest town to Machu Picchu accessible by road.

Many travelers choose the latter option as it is more affordable. Minibus tickets from Centro, Cusco to Ollantaytambo cost around S/35-S/60 (approximately $10-$16 USD).

Another cheaper (though slower) option is to take a local public transport called a colectivo, which is a small van that can accommodate 20 passengers. The colectivos to Ollantaytambo depart from  Calle Pavitos . The fare for this trip should not exceed S/10 ($2.7 USD); be aware that there are several private van operators that may charge higher prices.

From Ollantaytambo, you have two options: you can either board the Machu Picchu train at the Ollantaytambo train station (which is the same train that departs from Cusco), or you can join a 4-day, 3-night guided tour of the Inca Trail trek.

There are two companies operating the Machu Picchu trains: Inca Rail and PeruRail . Here’s a comparison of their services:

Both Inca Rail and PeruRail offer different types of trains to cater to various traveler preferences; the prices listed here are for their standard trains.

Luxury trains, such as the Vistadome or the  Hiram Bingham  train, are available at higher prices; the cost depends on the additional services you choose. Visit their websites to learn more.

The alternative route to Aguas Calientes

Not many people are aware that there is an alternative route to reach Aguas Calientes from Cusco, aside from going through the Sacred Valley. This alternative route is ideal for independent travelers aiming to  minimize their Machu Picchu expenses .

On the opposite side of Machu Picchu, there is a small settlement called Hidroeléctrica. Minibuses operate a six-hour trip through Ollantaytambo, Santa Maria, and Santa Theresa, with a one-way fare costing around $20 USD.

From Hidroeléctrica, you have two options. You can either walk to Aguas Calientes along the edge of the railway, which takes about three hours (although this is not recommended during the rainy season), or you can choose a train service from PeruRail for approximately $35 USD.

Taxis are usually available at the train station, but be cautious as some may overcharge, especially during the high season when walk-in passengers may have to wait for hours before boarding the train.

Cost of accommodation in Aguas Calientes

As the closest settlement to Machu Picchu, the town of Aguas Calientes sees a high number of daily visitors. However, there isn’t much to do in the town itself, apart from shopping and relaxing at the parks along the river.

As a result, visitors come and go throughout the day, making it relatively easy (and inexpensive) to find accommodation.

Aguas Calientes offers a range of accommodations from hostels to luxury hotels, with prices for a single night ranging from $30 to $1,000 USD. A small and cozy guesthouse with private bathrooms typically charges around S/250 ($68 USD) per night, which includes breakfast and luggage storage (the latter is useful if you plan to stay out past the check-out time).

During my visit in 2021, I stayed at  Susanna Inn Machu Picchu Hotel  ($70 USD for a double room). I chose this hotel for its convenient location, comfort, and affordability.

An alternative place to stay is Tierra Viva Machu Picchu Hotel  ($113 USD double), an affordable and strategic Peru hotel in Aguas Calientes that offers fantastic cloud forest views, while still being within walking distance of the town’s artisanal market and restaurants.

Most Aguas Calientes accommodation options offer round-trip packages to Machu Picchu at additional cost (starting from $50 USD). You can choose whether or not you need a guide and decide between a private tour or joining a group.

My English-speaking guide charged S/150 (around $41 USD) for the entire private tour, excluding bus tickets.

It’s advisable to book your accommodation well in advance to secure your spot, as most hotels are fully booked during peak season. Additionally, this will help you avoid unexpected increases in hotel rates during the high season.

3. Getting to Machu Picchu (from Aguas Calientes)

Bus tickets to machu picchu.

To fully enjoy Machu Picchu without the crowds, it’s essential to be among the first to enter the site. One option is to hike the 3.7-mile (six km) trail from Aguas Calientes; however, unless you can hike uphill continuously for one to two hours, you may not be able to beat the crowds.

The best strategy is to take the earliest bus to the entrance and hike the path back down to Aguas Calientes on your return to save money. Catch the bus that departs at 5:30 am from  Avenida Hermanos Ayar , located by the river.

Although some refer to this location as a “bus station,” it’s essentially a street where all the buses park and depart. Different bus providers operate along this street, but their seat prices should be the same: $12 USD (approximately S/44).

While you can purchase the tickets on the day, it’s advisable to book them in advance to secure your spot (you can do so  here ). I noticed that those who purchased theirs on-site had to wait for the following bus, even though they were likely aiming to catch the first bus.

Cost of day tickets to Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu entrance tickets can only be purchased from the  official website , where you register your name and select your preferred date and time of visit from the available time slots.

Since Machu Picchu reopened after the Covid-19 lockdowns, the Peruvian government has implemented a daily visitor limit of around 5,000 people. Therefore, it is necessary to buy your tickets in advance.

The price of the entrance tickets varies depending on the trekking route you choose. Additionally, there is a special discount for students and children aged three to 17 years. Below is a breakdown of the cost of Machu Picchu tickets:

Visitors can select one of four circuits to explore Machu Picchu. Each circuit has the same entrance and exit but covers different areas of the site, requiring varying amounts of time to complete. Here are the details of each circuit – click the links to view the official map.

4. Cost of trekking the Inca Trail and alternative treks

Cost of the Salkantay Trail (5D/5N on foot + bus)

For those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path experience, the Salkantay trek is an excellent option (read our comparison of the Inca Trail and the Salkantay to better understand the differences). This 66 km (41-mile) hike begins in Soraypampa and ends in Aguas Calientes.

Unlike the Inca Trail, there are no daily limits on the number of trekkers allowed on the Salkantay trek. However, due to the various route options available, you won’t encounter many hikers other than those in your group (up to 16 people).

The classic Salkantay trek takes five days and five nights and costs from $650 USD per person. You’re accompanied by a tour guide and porters, plus a chef for your group, while accommodation is in comfortable tents at campgrounds along the trail (if you hike with Alpaca Expeditions, this includes cute Hobbit huts one evening!).

Cost of the Choquequirao Trail (6D/5N on foot + minibus + train)

In addition to Machu Picchu, there are other Incan ruins worth exploring, such as Choquequirao. This expansive complex spans 1,800 hectares and overlooks the Apurimac River canyon at an elevation of 4,760 ft (1,450m).

The Choquequirao trek is a six-day, five-night adventure that takes you to this remarkable site before continuing to Machu Picchu.

The journey begins in Cusco, where you’ll take a minibus ride to the trailhead at Capuliyoc. From there, the trail leads you through Chikiscca, Santa Rosa, Marampata, and finally to Choquequirao, where you’ll have a full day to explore.

Afterward, you’ll continue onwards towards Machu Picchu via barely-hiked trails, arriving in Hidroeléctrica from where you can board a train to Aguas Calientes or hike beside the railway tracks.

You can generally find tours starting from $825 USD per person, with tours of up to 16 people. They’ll typically include a pickup service from your hotel, an experienced tour guide and personal porter plus a horse (for assistance if needed).

You can also expect them to cover the cost of your entrance tickets for both Choquequirao and Machu Picchu, transportation back to Cusco, one night of accommodation in Aguas Calientes, and all meals and water throughout the trek.

For this reason, here we explain in a friendly and friendly way what you should do before boarding the train and what rules we must respect during the trip. • When boarding the train, you must show your ticket and your ID or passport.
• The railway company will verify your ticket both before and during the trip.
• If you cannot prove that you are a ticket holder, you will be prevented from boarding the train without the option to make a claim.

• How long does it take to travel by train to Machu Picchu? The journey from Cusco takes more than 3 hours, while from Ollantaytambo, it takes a maximum of 2 hours.
• Who cannot take the train to Machu Picchu? People who are drunk or under the influence of drugs are not allowed to board the train. People with aggressive or violent behavior, unaccompanied minors, and animals are not allowed.
• How to buy the train ticket? It is recommended that you buy tickets online weeks in advance. In Cusco, you may need help finding availability.

While on the Inca Trail, every step — past ancient ruins, up stone staircases and over Dead Woman's Pass — brings hikers closer to their final goal: reaching Machu Picchu. Trains and buses drop thousands of visitors off here every day, but hiking in offers an unmatched experience. Hikers get to sit in sacred spaces, sleep under the stars and bond with their fellow adventurers. The promise of being able to reach the Sun Gate and take in that first view of Machu Picchu keeps them motivated.

Planning a hike on the Inca Trail takes time. There are also important factors to keep in mind, like when the dry season is and what time of year the trail is closed for maintenance. Here are some tips to ensure an epic experience.

What is the Inca Trail?

The Classic Inca Trail is a 25-mile-long hiking trail in the Andes Mountains that takes four days to complete and ends at Machu Picchu. After starting at KM 82 in the Sacred Valley, hikers will follow the stone paths that wind by sites like the Valley of Llulluchapampa, Sayacmarca ruins and Wiñay Wayna complex. On the final day of the trek, you most likely will rise well before dawn in order to arrive at the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu around sunrise.

How soon should you start planning a hike?

If possible, think about booking six to nine months in advance. The peak season to visit is June through August, and with the Inca Trail being a popular hike, permits are snapped up quickly. 

What is the best time of year to hit the trail?

The trail is open year-round except in February, when it is closed for maintenance. Dry season is May through September, "where temperatures are milder and you can expect bright, sunny days, making for great visibility along the hike," Krissy Concannon, an independent affiliate of Travellustre in Boston, told The Week. The Inca Trail is one direction only, and when the adventure is over you will leave by train or bus.

Do I need to train for the Inca Trail? 

Preparation for the hike should start before you leave home

This is a strenuous hike at a high altitude, traversing different landscapes like cloud forests and grasslands. Travelers should expect to travel six to nine miles a day and can train ahead of time by hiking with a pack or getting regular exercise at home. Julie Sudderth of Vivid Getaways in Dallas told The Week she has seen "hikers from 7 to 70 years old command this trail with no problems." The Inca Trail reaches an elevation of 13,800 feet above sea level, making acclimation critical, especially for those who have experienced altitude sickness previously. Concannon recommends spending at least two or three days in Cusco prior to the hike to acclimate better to the altitude.

What kind of experiences can you have on the trail?

Every trip has one element in common: You must go with an operator and cannot hike on your own. "Normally, the best companies go with the best guides," Sudderth said. "This is invaluable." Good guides "will know when to slow down or quicken the pace as they are actively reading the client’s demeanor," she added, and also "weave the rich history, wildlife and flora and fauna into the hike" while keeping everyone "engaged and motivated. With children especially, this is priceless."

Those who want to go all out can book a private or small group hike, with an expert guide and porters, a well-stocked and clean bathroom tent, gourmet meals and high-quality camping gear, from the pillows to the tents. Midrange experiences are catered toward hikers who do not want a bare-bones trip but also aim to keep costs down, and include nice gear and good food with moderate accommodations.

Concannon warns that when opting for low-cost hiking tours, travelers "need to be cautious to ensure operators are not cutting corners that could negatively impact their experience. Hikers can expect minimal or lesser quality gear and food options to be more minimal. Campsite options could also be less than ideal, with locations lacking in view."

Potential stops to visit along the way include Grover Beach, Santa Barbara, Oxnard, Los Angeles, and Anaheim. Each destination has its own range of activities and highlights. The beach is located just two blocks from the Santa Barbara rail station or you could head to the Channel Islands National Park from Oxnard.

Sri Lanka Railways – Sri Lanka

If you’ve seen photos of passengers hanging out of a blue train surrounded by dense, green foliage, you’ve likely seen the Sri Lanka Railways journey from Kandy to Ella in Sri Lanka. Although it may not be recommended to hang from objects moving at high speeds, you wouldn’t want to miss the views on this train ride between the central city of Kandy and the small southern town of Ella.

The ride takes about seven hours and offers views of tea plantations, green hills, bridges, and villages. It’s recommended not to book first-class tickets for your itinerary, as you won’t have the experience of mingling with the locals and having open windows.

The Jacobite – Scotland, United Kingdom

The Jacobite steam train is run by West Coast Railways, an independent train operating company based out of Lancashire, England. This train ride takes you on an 84-mile round-trip journey between Fort William and Mallaig in the Scottish Highlands.

The Scottish Highlands are a global destination known for their impressive natural beauty, including striking lochs and windswept hills. However, The Jacobite train in particular is famous for its starring role as The Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films.
