20th anniversary pressing.  You might've listened to  Moon Safari back when it first came out, but it's definitely worth a revisit. I know my ears were a little more biased a couple decades ago and weren't really in tune with this sound, but nowadays I'm pretty sure we're all much more familiar with the "French Style" and can really appreciate what these dudes were doing. Nicolas and JB (aka AIR ) were definitely ahead of their time, combining elements from Burt Bacharach and Serge Gainsbourg , ambient, lounge, new wave, beats and lots of synthesizers, into one unique musical style paving the way for similar-minded artists like Sebastien Tellier . Just take a listen the masterfully crafted chill out moods -"La Femme D'Argent," "Talisman," "All I Need," and "Sexy Boy," "Le Voyage De Penelope," and "Remember." The whole album has aged amazingly well and goes down real easy - it's that smooth. Recommended.

In its rambling Rhodes piano riffs and flickers of smooth bass, Moon Safari contains a universe. It is a beginning: The story of two young people finally making the art they knew they were capable of making, the story of using what you have to create what can best be described as a mood. A sensation, a prick on the back of your neck, a spit exchange with a stranger in a smoky bar.

Moon Safari , though, will always be a perfect debut. It feels like a dream sequence. One moment you’re walking through a room drenched in pink light while dressed in a tuxedo, the next you’re diving into the neighbor’s pool butt-naked with your high school crush. It’s a mood you want to live inside of forever. It’s a revelation. It’s conversation pit music for a better future.”

Sophie Frances Kemp is a Brooklyn-based writer, originally from Schenectady, New York. Her work has previously appeared in American Vogue, Pitchfork, GARAGE and NPR.

Air announce 25th anniversary vinyl reissue of ‘Moon Safari’

It follows a 20th anniversary celebration of the duo's ’10 000Hz Legend’ LP in 2021

Air have announced a 25th anniversary vinyl reissue of their classic debut album ‘Moon Safari’.

The French duo – comprised of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel – released their debut album in 1998.

After celebrating 20 years of its 2001 follow-up ’10 000Hz Legend’ with a reissue in 2021, ‘Moon Safari’ will now be reissued on vinyl via Vinyl Me Please to celebrate its 25th birthday.

The reissue will land on February 1 and be pressed on an exclusive 180gram “Sea of Tranquility” coloured vinyl.

It will feature lacquers cut by Marie Pieprrzownik alongside a Listening Notes article by Sophie Frances Kemp and an art print from Mike Mills.

The liner notes for the reissue say of the album: “It feels like a dream sequence. One moment you’re walking through a room drenched in pink light while dressed in a tuxedo, the next you’re diving into the neighbour’s pool butt-naked with your high school crush.

“It’s a mood you want to live inside of forever. It’s a revelation. It’s conversation pit music for a better future.”

Air last studio effort,  ‘Le Voyage Dans La Lune’ , came out in 2012.

Asked by  NME in 2019 whether there would be another record, the band’s Nicolas Godin said that he was concerned about ruining the band’s “magic” by releasing a “substandard album”.

“If we’re able to find that magic, we’ll go into the studio,” he continued. “But if not, we’ll move aside and let other people make those magic records.”

Air announce ‘Moon Safari’ 25th anniversary deluxe edition

The release will include rare and unreleased tracks, alongside a documentary filmed during Air's first world tour

Air are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their seminal debut album, ‘Moon Safari', with a deluxe edition release. 

Out 8th March via Parlophone/Warner Music, the expaned release will feature two CDs and a Blu-Ray Audio-Video package. 

The reissue will include a Spatial Dolby Atmos audio version of the original album, along with rare or previously unreleased tracks. Additionally, it will include Mike Mills' 1998 documentary Eating, Sleeping, Waiting & Playing , filmed during the band's first worldwide tour, among other bonus content.

Air will kick off their  ‘Moon Safari’ tour across Europe next month. The tour, which will be the first time that the French duo have performed the record in full live, will start on 16th February in Rouen, playing in various cities across Switzerland, Italy, Germany, France, and The Netherlands, before concluding in London’s Coliseum Theatre on 24th March.

Alongside the announcement of the 25th-anniversary deluxe edition, the duo has revealed additional tour dates, which extend into the summer months. These dates include performances on 30th May at London's Royal Albert Hall, Sónar Festival in Barcelona on 14th June, Days Off Festival in Paris on 24th June, Zitadelle Spandau in Berlin on 21st July, and Medastadt Open Air in Vienna on 23rd July. 

Reflecting on the release, Jean-Benoît Dunckel said: “We were a duo doing some electronic thing, dreaming of selling 10,000 copies and being recognised by other musicians as cool. Then suddenly, we met the world.” He went on to describe ‘Moon Safari’ as “a deep, universal spell, full of love and mystery," while fellow co-member, Nicolas Godin, declared it "perfect."

Last year, Air also released a 25th-anniversary vinyl edition of their critically acclaimed debut.

AIR’s boundary-pushing album has long been praised for its innovative sonics that have inspired countless musicians to think outside the box, so much so that their influence even transcended their own medium. Since Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel formed the band in 1995, the prolific duo has released six albums in addition to their acclaimed EP Premiers Symptômes, which was followed by the release of the aforementioned classic Moon Safari along with two soundtracks that all together sold millions of copies. AIR garnered an extensive list of worldwide accolades for their unique brand of downtempo electronic music that not only sculpted the sound for the next generation of electronic-influenced pop music but also was able to withstand the test of time in its own right.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary last year, the release of Moon Safari catapulted Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel to the uppermost rung of electronic music’s ladder and left an indelible imprint on pop culture at the end of the 20th Century.

Despite being young 20-somethings at the time and having only released one EP to date, Godin and Dunckel’s stars aligned and together they were blessed with the creative skill to make the perfect electronic pop songs. These two students of astrophysics and architecture set about creating their own universe with the confidence and pedigree of seasoned pros.

Today, the record’s legacy is canonical, but at the time of release, its multi-million success was far from assured. Says Dunckel: “We were a duo doing some electronic thing, dreaming of selling 10,000 copies and being recognised by other musicians as cool. Then suddenly, we met the world.” In no time at all, AIR’s downtempo influence was easy to detect all around.

Through Moon Safari , AIR’s music infiltrated and transfixed some of the great visionaries of the late 20th century – David Bowie , Madonna , Beck – as well as influencing preeminent aesthetes of the incoming age – including Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kevin Parker and Sofia Coppola, whose creative relationship with AIR became as synergetic as that of Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch (another fan).

Moon Safari birthed hit singles in Kelly Watch The Stars, All I Need and Sexy Boy, sold more than 3 million copies around the world, and pushed AIR into headline status at major festivals. 25 years on, it’s not hard to reason why Moon Safari has stood the test of time. Air’s Moon Safari deluxe tracklisting officially confirmed

25th anniversary edition.

After much speculation, the tracklisting of the 2CD+blu-ray 25th anniversary reissue of Air’s 1998 album Moon Safari – specifically the content of CD 2 – has been confirmed by the record label.

The second disc will feature the following tracks:

The first thing to make clear is that it is not the same as the second CD in the previously released 10th anniversary edition , although there is some overlap, namely the three BBC live tracks and the David Whitaker version of ‘Remember’. In terms of the other selections, the Air remix of Neneh Cherry’s Kootchi was previously featured on CD 3 of the Twentyears deluxe edition in 2016, as was the ‘La Femme D’Argent Mix’ of Crustation’s ‘Purple’. The demos appear to be previously unreleased and the Extended Version of ‘Kelly Watch The Stars’ has never been issued on CD before.

The other new info is that David Whitaker’s version of ‘Remember’ is also available in Dolby Atmos on the blu-ray as a bonus track. Also, the hi-res stereo version of the album on the blu-ray, along with that bonus track, is in super high resolution: 192 kHz / 24 bit.

Air to celebrate 25th anniversary of ‘Moon Safari’ with full album tour including extra Royal Albert Hall date

French electronic duo AIR will perform their debut album ‘Moon Safari’ in its entirety on a special tour across Europe and the UK next year.

The tour, which marks the 25th anniversary of the album’s release, will be a one-night-only experience in each city, featuring a live band and visuals.

Moon Safari was released in 1998 and became a global success, spawning hit singles such as ‘Sexy Boy’, ‘Kelly Watch The Stars’ and ‘All I Need’.

The album is widely regarded as a masterpiece of '90s electronic music, blending pop, lounge, ambient and synth-pop influences.

A special 25th anniversary Deluxe Edition of the album will be released on March 8 in various formats.

It will be available as Deluxe 2CD/Blu Ray Audio-Video, and will will include a Spatial Dolby Atmos audio version of the original album along with super rare or previously unreleased tracks, as well as Mike Mill’s 1998 documentary film Eating, Sleeping, Waiting & Playing.

The tour kicks off on February 24, 2024 at Anitgel at Victoria Hall in Geneva, and will visit Milan, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam and more cities, taking in a now-sold out at the London Coliseum on March 24, with an extra date added at the Royal Albert Hall on May 30.

Tickets for new show will go on sale next Friday, February 2, at 10am.

Air, consisting of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel, said they were excited to revisit their debut album and share it with their fans.

Godin added: “To me, Moon Safari is perfect. It’s a deep, universal spell, full of love and mystery. We can’t wait to play it live for you.”

In addition to the tour, Air have also released a Dolby Atmos Mix of Moon Safari , exclusively on Apple Music. The mix will offer a new immersive listening experience of the album, with enhanced spatial sound and clarity.

Earlier this year, Air also released a 25th anniversary vinyl edition of Moon Safari , featuring remastered audio and a booklet with rare photos and liner notes.

Battle of Moscow

ww2dbase As early as Jul 1941, the Russians knew the Germans were going to breach their defenses and threaten Moscow. On 3 Jul, Lenin's body was moved from Moscow to Tumen to prevent German capture or destruction. Little over two weeks later, on 22 Jul, 127 German bombers raided Moscow, even lightly damaging the Kremlin. As a response, Moscow residents were ordered to build mock houses on Kremlin's grounds and paint the distinct roof of the building in order to blend it in with the rest of the city. Streets were also barricaded in preparation of a German attack. Moscow was proud, however, aided by Joseph Stalin's propaganda machine. One such example was the 7 Nov parade in celebration of the anniversary of the October Revolution, where Russian soldiers marched straight through Red Square toward the battlefields to the west.

ww2dbase After a series of attacks and counterattacks from both sides, the German troops were beginning to show signs of fatigue. Replacements came slowly partly due to the unplanned action in the Balkans and Crete, while the brutal Russian winter loomed dangerously near. The Russians, on the other hand, saw relatively fresh reinforcements from the recently arrived Georgi Zhukov and his troops from the Far East; the inability of the Axis powers to negotiate for a joint-attack on Russian had a significant impact on the German ability to quickly bring down Russia, but Adolf Hitler was too egotistical to see.

ww2dbase After a few days of preparations in Moscow's suburbs, on 2 Oct 1941, Fedor von Bock led German troops to assault directly against Moscow. German advances were slower than they had hoped with a rainy fall season and later a cold early winter. As German vehicles become immobilized, the German army continued to advance, however the cold weather was affecting the morale and fighting ability of the troops to a high degree. On 15 Nov, another push for Moscow was launched, and within two weeks the Germans reached the 27km marker to Moscow, with some soldiers claiming the sighting of the towers of Kremlin.

ww2dbase The weather also significantly harmed the German ability to supply the Moscow contingent by rail, despite Minister Dorpmüller and the German Reich Railways dramatically expanding its operations during the campaign. The water tanks of the locomotives regularly froze under sub-zero conditions, pushing the number of broken-down locomotives at any given time to the hundreds. Additionally, the Russian railways were of a different gauge, forcing the German engineers to re-bed all the railways before the German locomotives could use them. In Dec 1941, with the transport situation so desperate that a special motor transport organization was formed to alleviate some of the pressure. Despite the superhuman results the Germans had achieved in the arena of logistics, it was just not enough. The German frontlines troops, including the air force, required the equivalent of 120 train loads of supplies daily for normal operations (ie. not counting supplies needed to mount major operations); only about 100 train loads worth of supplies were delivered on a regular day. To make matters even worse, Russian partisans regularly sabotaged railway tracks to slow things further.

ww2dbase Russians had been launching counteroffensives of various sizes since early Sep to slow the progress of the German army. The counteroffensives were largely planned under the leadership of Zhukov, a man who Stalin feared as a political threat but yet relied on so much to defend his capital. On 5 Dec, Zhukov saw the opportunity to launch a major counteroffensive, while at the same time he knew he could no longer take any chances; the German troops were too close to Moscow for his comfort. He called in his troops of Siberia and the Far East, who had been resting nearby for such a counteroffensive. T-34 tanks and Katyusha rocket launchers led the way for the fresh Russian soldiers, some of whom donned the white winter camouflage that became the subject of nightmares to the freezing retreating German troops. By 7 Jan 1942, the front lines were driven back anywhere between 100km to 250km. German forces would never again threaten Moscow directly for the rest of the war.

ww2dbase The final tally tilted amazingly harsh on the Russian side of the battle. Russia suffered over 600,000 casualties, with some estimates going as high as 700,000. Meanwhile, the German troops suffered a smaller 250,000 casualties, though the German momentum was stopped while the Russians built up their own. For the efforts of Moscow residents to defend the capital city, Moscow was honored with the title Hero City in 1965.
