Sixthman Cruises: Experiences?

By rigolizj , February 9, 2018 in Theme Cruises

Cool Cruiser

Going on my first Sixthman-hosted Theme Cruise this October. (The Chris Jericho Cruise. I can't wait!!) Anyone have experience with Sixthman and/or their cruise events? I'm a member of the FB group already, so I've encountered some of the staff and several folks I'll be cruising with... but I'm just curious if y'all have had experiences with them. Was the theme worth the extra cost? How do you think they handled special events? Am I going to collapse from exhaustion on the flight home? :D

We did a Sixthman cruise last year. It was a Walking Dead Cruise out of Miami. Overall it was a great experience and all four of us had a wonderful time. It was only a 3-night cruise though so everything was jam-packed. I didn't feel we got to experience enough because there were so many things going on at the same time and we couldn't do it all. For the price we paid, I wanted to do more of what they offered than what we actually got to do. Having said that, it was a very fun experience and definitely glad we did it. Sixth Man did a great job putting the event together. The couple times I had to go to information desk they were always upbeat friendly, and helpful. Hope you have a great time on your theme to Chris.

vamartha

Don't they do the Kid Rock cruise? If so, we have friends who go every year! Based upon their pics, they have a wonderful time! Sixthman has a very good reputation for their theme cruises!

Thanks for the input! So far it looks like we'll have a great time!

We went on the Keeping the Blues Alive II Cruise last year and we’re leaving on Monday, Feb. 26 for IV. Last year was packed with music, and a lot were new bands I’ve never heard of. All the venues were so full it was standing room only and you had to get there 45 min. early to get a seat. It was fun though.

rubytue

I've done two Rock Boats (Sixthman's first cruise - up to the 19th year!). They do a excellent job and think of everything, down to custom casino chips. Sixthman customer service is great, but there are some bit where you are still limited to what NCL has to offer, such as food and beverage (they are an NCL subsidiary now, since about 2012 or 13). You will really see what the extra cost went for, besides the artist(s). It really is a top notch cruise experience.

Rock Boat is just too much for me, honestly. Too much going on, too many conflicts, no quiet places. I love music, and go see many of the band on the Rock Boat multiple times a year (including one tonight!). But... to me it's not worth double the cost of a normal cruise (I can get a lot of land-shows for $1700). But that is me. I have a ton of friends who go every year and would never do a "normal" cruise. Its nothing on Sixthman - they do great. I'm just too much of an introvert for it lol

My son wanted to go on this cruise and didn't want to go by himself and since I love to cruise I'm going with him. We have cruised with NCL several times but the first with Sixthman. Can't wait to see all the answers you get. I was wondering about them too. How they did things like when we get to the port do they have special boarding for certain cabins like NCL does or how does this work?

As you can see from my signature, I’ve been on a number of Sixthman cruises. I also did one charter put on by another company. Sixthman really knows what they’re doing. I couldn’t go to a normal music festival now - I like having food included and a bed close by.

I always see people complain about schedule conflicts - aka counter programming. But there’s no way the whole ship can experience everything all together. The pool deck is the only space big enough to hold everyone. What would you do if rain moved things inside? The next largest venue - the stardust theater - holds about half the guests. I like that I can float between shows depending on my mood.

There may be a line for suites, but there is usually not a line for those with status on NCL. One nice thing is you do get Latitudes points on Sixthman cruises, unlike other charters. And you get the perks if you have status. We’ve made it a habit to gather one morning in the Great Outdoors for mimosas using our free champagne.

How do you get the Latitudes points? I'm a latitudes member and would love to get the points since I'm like two points away from the next level. I called NCL and they told me that I couldn't get points but some times I find out that some people that work for a company don't know all the items people can do. Either way we are so looking forward to this cruise.

Customer service people often don’t realize that Sixthman cruises do earn points. You’ll get them after automatically.

splintz

going on my first kiss kruise this halloween. super excited. since it was my first time there was very few cabins left when i was able to book. it sold out in 10 days.

Just got back from my second Sixthman Keeping the Blues Alive IV Cruise. We got a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries delivered to our room plus gifts every night. That in in addition to non-stop incredible music! The food was good, but I always prefer the dining room since it gets hectic in the buffet and I enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and quiet. We went to Montego Bay in Jamaica which was not my favorite destination, but then it was a short cruise. Only one show was rained out which was disappointing but then it can't be helped. All in all, a great time!

Did you have a suite or is this something that Sixthman does for it's cruises?

Most Sixthman cruises you get a couple gifts. I've gotten blankets, tote bags, posters, a nice insulated mug with the cruise art on them. Sometimes you get gifts from sponsors if your cruise has them - free beer, energy drinks, pool toys, etc.

The champagne is through Lattitudes. Some don't like it, but most think it's fine mixed with some OJ.

Did you have a suite or is this something that Sixthman does for it's cruises?     Thanks, Janice

No, we don’t spend hardly any time in the cabin so after the first cruise we reserve only inside cabins,

We have the jokers cruise booked and they called and offered an upgrade to a suite. I wasn’t sure if the suite came with all the typical suite benefits since it’s a charter (UBP, dining, etc). Does anyone know?

I’ve sent a follow up email to sixthman but figured I’d see if anyone else knows from experience.

You’ll get the normal suite perks, but no guests have Haven access.

You’ll get the normal suite perks, but no guests have Haven access.     Sent from my iPhone using Forums

They got back to me and said what you said and added that there’s no speciality dining and no beverage package with the room. Bummer (but I figured as much).

I have been on 4 Sixthman cruises!!!! I LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!! I went on Keeping the Blues alive this year and found the crowd a little too subdued for our taste. We like to see bands on the pool deck!!!! You will not be disappointed!!! Sixthman has it down!!!!!!

I’ve been on 3of the Kiss Kruises by Sixthman...while they do a great job, NCL continues to get worse every year...food, service, employees that don’t speak a word of English. So, unless they switch to another cruise line no more Kiss Kruise for me.

Sadly its the second year in a row where an NCL - Sixthman cruise ended with an epic failure.  Both years hundreds of people bought airport transfers and both years the buses did not arrive for the hundreds of people who waited outside for nearly 3 hours after disembarking the ship.  Many had to take cabs, Ubers etc to avoid missing flights.

Sixthman takes no responsibility for the failure, blaming NCL.  But it's important to know that this company is OWNED by NCL since 2012.  When a company refuses to advocate on behalf of their bookings, there's something wrong and they should be avoided.  It should also be noted that two people posted comments about the transportation failure and Sixthman opted to take them down from their FB pages, claiming that it has nothing to do with them in spite of their NCL connection.

Clearly, you're only going to get to see the positive things they want you to see and that too should cause you to worry when they don't want you to see the problems their cruisers encountered.

I'm an introvert too and on the music charters I've done (StarVista Live's Ultimate Disco Cruise and ECP's 80s Cruise), I didn't have too much difficulty finding quiet spaces when I wanted them.

I'm also a music lover who's starting to get into concerts.  But unlike you, I live in a live performance desert - everyone comes to Metro Detroit or Grand Rapids or the casinos and almost no one comes to my neck of the woods.  The pain of getting out of a packed concert arena area means that most concerts (for me) would be overnights, which adds considerably to the costs to go to them.  That means that, for me, the music charters I've been on have been worth the money over a regular cruise (double seems about right - I WISH they were only $1700 each.  🤑 )

On 3/8/2018 at 12:01 PM, rigs32 said: Most Sixthman cruises you get a couple gifts. I've gotten blankets, tote bags, posters, a nice insulated mug with the cruise art on them. Sometimes you get gifts from sponsors if your cruise has them - free beer, energy drinks, pool toys, etc.

I've gotten lots of gifts on the music charters I've been on also - mostly logo items of limited practical value, but I do appreciate the thought behind them.  I've never knowingly gotten sponsor gifts; I don't think any of our cruises had sponsors other than the charter company and the cruise line.

BTW, I haven't taken a Sixthman cruise yet, though I've been tempted a couple of times (Melissa, Beach Boys - looking at you).  I think eventually our paths will intersect.

Last year was packed with music, and a lot were new bands I’ve never heard of. All the venues were so full it was standing room only and you had to get there 45 min. early to get a seat. It was fun though.

I was on KTBA 2 years ago. It was fabulous. I’ve done 2 Cayamo’s as well. Also fabulous. The music jams on deck were amazing … Joe Bonnamassa and Tommy Emanuel rocking out … unreal.  A gift in your room everyday. Buddy Guy performing live on the pool deck.

I’ll absolutely do another one in a year or two. I handle my own airport transfer because I don’t trust anyone else to get me to the airport. I’m sorry for those who had to wait for bus’s.

Lyle Lovett and The Maverick’s headlining the next Cayamo. KT Tunstall as well. I’m sorry to miss it but my bucket list doth runneth over.

Did our first Sixthman on OCC7 in February. Loved it and we are booked for 8! Also booking KTBA9 next March with friends.

Music cruises are blending vacations with nostalgic access to your favorite bands

Raymond MacMorris loves the band Creed. He's such a fan that he shelled out $1,500 for a package that included guitar lessons with current frontman Mark Tremonti, and another $2,500 for a lifetime VIP concert pass to the band’s spinoff group, Alter Bridge. So when MacMorris learned that Creed was headlining a five-day rock cruise called Summer of ’99 in April, he quickly snapped up a two-person cabin for roughly $4,000.

“The thing sold out in like three minutes,” says MacMorris, 58, the owner of a roofing a siding company in Port Jefferson Station. With his daughter grown and his son away at college, he adds, “It’s a little getaway vacation for me and the wife to rock out a little bit.” Two Summer of '99 cruises depart this spring from Florida, the first running April 18-22 departing from Miami and the second running April 27-May 1, out of Port Canaveral. Both cruises are headed to Nassau, Bahamas.

MacMorris is among the thousands of vacationers who are deciding that music cruises are just their ticket. Not long ago, you may have scoffed at rock cruises as a last gasp for faded legacy acts — the equivalent of Spinal Tap playing at a puppet show, perhaps. These days, chances are good that some of your own favorite artists are performing on a ship, from the pop-punk group Paramore to the rapper Talib Kweli to the emo-prog band Coheed and Cambria.

“I think we are helping squash the stigma of cruising”

- Jeff Cuellar, CEO of Sixthman

What’s behind the music cruise appeal?

The biggest draw, according to band members who book cruise gigs, and Long Islanders who secure spots on the ships:

  • It’s a mini music festival, paired with a vacation.
  • All-inclusive convenience: One price covers room, board and access.
  • Speaking of access: Expect band meet-and-greets, autograph sessions and contests.
  • Relaxation: “It’s a no brainer; I get to play music and hang out on a ship,” says Nine Days singer John Hampson.

“I think we are helping squash the stigma of cruising,” says Jeff Cuellar, CEO of Sixthman, an Atlanta-based company behind the Summer of '99 cruise that has all but cornered the rock-at-sea market. “I look at it this way: It’s a venue, no different from Madison Square Garden.”

Since being acquired by Norwegian Cruise Line in 2012, Sixthman has grown steadily: Cuellar says the company offered 19 cruises last year, has another 24 scheduled for this year and is planning 27 for 2025.

Compared to a traditional land-based music festival — say, a Bonnaroo or a Coachella — cruises certainly offer more convenience. For starters, one price includes room and board (and, for a little more, alcohol). The stages are never more than a ship’s-length walk away. And maybe best of all: No portable toilets.

But the biggest selling point may be access to the bands. Cruises tend to come with meet-and-greets, autograph sessions and events like guitar-pick-throwing contests or band-hosted karaoke parties.

Rik Deluca, of Cutchogue, is the drummer for the band Spread...

Rik DeLuca, the Cutchogue-based drummer for the band Spread Eagle, says one of the best parts of playing the recent Monsters of Rock cruise — which left from Miami in March and featured Faster Pussycat, The Darkness, Quiet Riot and others — was interacting with fans and getting to be a star-struck fan himself.

“Just walking down the promenade and hearing people say, ‘Hey, can we take a picture with you?’ It was so enjoyable,” says DeLuca, 56. And conversely: “You just jump in the elevator, and all of sudden you’re standing next to Joe Satriani.”

Another Long Island band hopping on a cruise is Nine Days, famous for their Top Ten hit “Absolutely (Story of a Girl).” Singer John Hampson, now an English teacher at Wantagh High School, says the Summer of ’99 cruises conveniently lined up with his school break, so Nine Days will play both.

“It’s a no-brainer; I get to play music and hang out on a ship,” Hampson says, adding that he’s looking forward to seeing his old friends in Vertical Horizon, one of the other bands on the bill.

“We essentially do one set per day, that’s it,” Hampson says. “It’s a pretty easy few days where you really get to enjoy yourself and hang out.”

LAUNCHING THE NOSTALGIA CRUISE

According to company lore, Sixthman has its roots in a 2001 effort by Andy Levine, manager of Sister Hazel, to get the band together with 400 devoted fans on a Labor Day cruise called “Rock and Roll at Sea.” That led to booking multiple bands to fill entire ships, and soon Sixthman was attracting marquee names like John Mayer, Kid Rock and KISS.

The Rock Boat XXII set sail last year. Credit: Tammy Vega

Popularity alone does not make an artist cruise-worthy, according to Cuellar. Questions his team might ask: “Who are the artists that have a fan club? In that fan club, how active are they? What does their VIP section look like? Do they have a Reddit group? Are people getting tattoos of the band?”

Cuellar adds: “I wouldn’t want to name names, but we’ve had some very large artists where you’d assume, ‘Oh, that’s a slam dunk. Of course it will sell out.’ And it doesn’t.”

Of course, nostalgia tends to play a large part in many music cruises.

Teresa D’Amelia, 52, of Holbrook, says she’s attending the first Summer of ’99 cruise in April with two siblings, both roughly her age, and looking forward to hearing the soundtrack of her 20s and 30s. “I was living at home, going out with my friends,” she recalls. “Just free-spirited and no responsibilities.”
