Expedition Cruise to Disko Bay- Ocean Albatros

The tour was enjoyable and the Ocean Albatros is an outstanding boat! I thought the tour was a little too long for what was offered. It might be possible in future to reduce it to 5 or 6 days as the settlements visited are very small and there is not much to do if you are not a hiker. Perhaps two settlements could be visited in the one day. The lectures/presentations were generally very good but not all were professionally delivered. I had wanted much more information about the history, culture, and politics of Greenland and we could have begun early, say the second day, with the introduction to Greenlandic language and a few important words. Also, a little more attention to solo travellers like myself would have been appreciated. And may I suggest that the entertainment offerings could be updated in terms of the films available and also add a channel for classical music! I did enjoy my trip, my very first expedition cruise, but there is some fine tuning that can be done to make the experience even more enjoyable.

What people love about greenland tours.

This is an amazing tour, exploring the world largest island. I am the oldest in the group of young dudes from different parts of the globe. Being an old bloke in the group it’s not easy. Traversing and maneuvering the parched land of Greenland and trekking the icecap…whoa! that’s incredible to feat. Our tour expert Eva is amazing, she walks and talks with full of energy. She knows the area well enough that she could explain with gusto. If you’re looking for comfort tour, this is not for you. Transportation…majority by foot and speed boat. The group of ten bonded together. We’d amazing swaddled moments together. Sleeping in a tent in the middle of nowhere, very very cold, making pee in the middle of the night walking few hundred feet groping in the dark if no flashlight…that was fun, good luck if you trip. Eating our lunch anyplace, anywhere but place good enough to rest and eat. The only issue I’d was buying a few minutes of WiFi to use that didn’t work, waste of money. I want to write more but it’ll be a book….Anyway, thanks to the Tasermiut Tour team but Eva takes the lion’s share.
it was absolutely amazing!!! Trip of a lifetime

EPIC Greenland Tours for 2024: The Best Holiday Packages

Greenland is a land of phenomenons with its midnight sun, glacial landscapes, and unique arctic wildlife. Plus, there’s the rare chance to see the skies dance with the northern lights – if you’re  really  lucky. But with the world’s largest island comprising 80% ice and very few roads, getting around Greenland is very difficult if not impossible on your own. That’s why pretty much everyone who visits Greenland does so via some sort of organized tour.

As a marine nation, the best way to absorb the wonders of this icy tundra is by joining a cruise or marine-based adventure. No, don’t panic – Greenland cruises aren’t your typical cruise. You’ll constantly be in and out of your trusty zodiac steed, flitting between the glacial towers and fjords. Fortunately, we have friends in handy places who run fantastic boat trips to Greenland that’ll take you to all the places you want to see.

Now, we know you don’t want to spend your time trawling over different packages. So, we’ve rounded up the best tours in Greenland for you. All you need to do is pack (and save up a few dollars first).

Best Greenland Tour

Best Greenland Tours

Best overall tour in greenland – essential greenland: southern coasts and disko bay, best budget tour of greenland – explore greenland and spitsbergen: fjords and glaciers, best greenland tour for photographers – northwest passage: epic high arctic, best adventure tour in greenland – greenland adventure by sea, land and air, most unique tour in greenland – spitsbergen, jan mayen, greenland and iceland, quick guide to visiting greenland, final thoughts on the best greenland tours.

Not many people can say they’ve explored this unique island nation. This massive realm of glaciers and fjords feels like you’re cruising into an entirely different world.

As we said, all tours in Greenland are marine expeditions. That means you’ll live aboard a comfy ship , stopping off to explore villages and landmass via zodiac boat, kayak, and even helicopter on some tours. All you need to do is decide which parts of Greenland appeal the most to you, and the most convenient port of embarkment/disembarkment. Oh, and how deep your pockets are – Greenland isn’t for shoestring backpackers.

It’s time for you to sail into a part of the world few will venture! Let’s find out which of these Greenland holidays is best for you.

holiday tour greenland

  • Number of days: 15
  • Price: $12,960 USD
  • Group Size: 8 min, 132 max
  • Fitness Required: Mild
  • Accommodation type: Expedition voyage ship, comfortable hotel. All cabins are heated and comfortable.
  • How many meals included: 14 breakfasts, 11 lunches, 12 dinners
  • Service Level: Marine/ comfort (reasonably luxurious)

Abandoned Arctic ghost towns, plunging fjords, and colourful Arctic tundra – this trip is a cocktail of culture and natural wonders. Experience the east, south and west coasts of Greenland – each has its own unique features. In the east you can view glaciers deep within the fjords, the south is steeped in Norse history, and the west has icebergs and mountainous landscapes aplenty.

The best Greenland tours give you an opportunity to connect with local communities, and that’s what you’ll do on this agenda. Besides meeting small sheep-farming communities, you’ll get to explore the Greenlandic capital, Nuuk – one of the most northern cities on the planet.

Note that this one starts and ends in Reykjavik, Iceland , if you fancy continuing your arctic adventure.

Southern Coasts and Disko Bay Greenland

Who is this tour best for?

Couples, families, travellers of all ages. Anyone who wants to experience as much of the Greenlandic coastline as possible.

  • Expensive (this will be a theme – we warned you)
  • Some adventure activities (such as kayaking) cost extra and must be booked in advance

holiday tour greenland

  • Number of days: 14
  • Price: $5,943 USD
  • Group Size: 8 min, 134 max
  • Accommodation type: Comfortable cruise ship cabins with en suite
  • How many meals included: 13 breakfasts, 12 lunches, 13 dinners

You might gawk at us when we say this is the best budget tour in Greenland, but as we said – the arctic ain’t cheap. There really is no such thing as a truly bare-bones budget trip for Greenland. This 2-week cruise gives you a glimpse into the unspoiled wilderness of Greenland, Svalbard, and Spitsbergen . Zodiacs and your own two feet will take you even deeper into this glacial paradise of fjords, bays, and inlets.

Spend days gazing out upon frigid ocean horizons looking out for orca, humpback, and minke whales. On land, you might sight arctic foxes and reindeer! You’ll also have the chance to a stop at the most remote town in Greenland – Ittoqqortoormiit – and learn how the 450 inhabitants live. While we’re on dry land, you have a chance to meet some huskies here as well.

This loop trip deposits you back in Longyearbyen, from where you can arrange your onwards travel. Alternatively, you could opt for the Arctic Highlights tour, also offered by GAdventures. This one finishes in Reykjavik, which may be more convenient for your onward travel plans.

Fjords and Glaciers Greenland

Couples, families, bucket-listers, wildlife enthusiasts. Phillip Pullman fans who dreamed of visiting Svalbard. Those hungry for knowledge – your expedition includes daily lectures and educational talks.

  • Arranging your inward and outward travel to Longyearbyen (a territory belonging to Norway) might bump up the costs depending on where you fly from
  • Due to the timings of luggage drop-off and embankment, you will also need to arrange your own accommodation the night prior to the tour

holiday tour greenland

  • Number of days: 17
  • Price: $19,140 USD
  • Group Size: 8 min, 200 max
  • Accommodation type: En suite cruise ship cabins/ comfortable hotel
  • How many meals included: None

Feeling flush and ready for an adventure that you (and your bank manager) will never forget? This epic expedition gets you hiking over permafrost, wildlife spotting, and cruising past fjords, glaciers and icebergs on a daily basis.

You’ll encounter abandoned research stations, places where explorers of old met their demise, and tiny Inuit communities. Pitched as immersive expedition travel, you’ll hear the crash of glacier shards falling into the icy ocean. If you’re up to the challenge, take a polar plunge yourself. All tours in Greenland are a match made in heaven for photographers. But considering the distance you cover in this one, you can get really creative as you document your journey.

Intrepid runs a very similar version to this trip, the Northwest Passage: In the Footsteps of Franklin . It’s the same number of days, same price, and same start/endpoints. However, the cruise hugs the Canadian mainland rather than Greenland.

Epic High Arctic Greenland

Older travellers, couples, bucket-listers, wildlife enthusiasts. Canadians and North Americans (the trip starts and ends in Toronto)

  • Yup – expensive
  • No meals are included and certain activities such as kayaking are not included in the price

holiday tour greenland

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

holiday tour greenland

  • Number of days: 9
  • Price: $10,460 USD
  • Accommodation type: Cruise ship cabins (en suite)/ comfortable hotel
  • How many meals included: 7 breakfasts, 6 lunches, 7 dinners
  • Service Level: Marine comfort

Access the depths of Southern Greenland’s fjords by zodiac, kayak, and helicopter, and hike on the Ice Sheet itself. Adventurers will love the chance to hike in this isolated tundra. Deep within the fjord system, you’ll see dramatic landscapes ranging from snow-capped mountains to fields blooming with flowers. Yeah – we know, not exactly what you’d expect from holidays in Greenland of all places, despite the irony of the name.

This tour has a very fluid itinerary, so you can expect each day to bring something unexpected. Beginning and ending in Reykjavik, you can continue your quest in Iceland.

Greenland Adventure by Sea Land Air Greenland

Modern-day adventurers, couples, travellers of all ages, bucket-listers, wildlife enthusiasts.

  • Activities could be hindered if the weather doesn’t cooperate
  • At full capacity, the boat may feel busy

holiday tour greenland

  • Number of days: 18
  • Price: £15,040 USD
  • Accommodation type: Comfortable, en suite cruise ship cabins
  • How many meals included: 17 breakfasts, 15 lunches, 16 dinners

If you think Greenland is a radical destination for travel, wait until you get to Jan Mayen. This is a volcanic island drifting right in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, surrounded by ice. We know, the mind boggles.

Besides this, the trip chucks in all the usual (albeit amazing) suspects. Unforgettable zodiac rides, spectacular fjords and trips peering out trying to spot an elusive polar bear. But, there is no standard arctic circle trip – you just never know what the weather or mother nature will throw at you.

Need to transpose your start and endpoints? Then book the Spitsbergen, East Greenland and Iceland – Northbound tour instead. It’s a very similar route, although it misses Jan Mayen.

Spitsbergen Jan Mayen Greenland

Couples, families, bucket-listers, photographers, wildlife lovers, those interested in geology

  • Another option which is especially pricey
  • Depending on your nationality, you may need visas for three different countries – Norway, Greenland and Iceland. Do check before you book.

Best Time to Visit Greenland

Best Time to Visit in Greenland

With long days and the promise of the midnight sun, summer (June to September) is the typical season to plan a vacation in Greenland. The temperatures are a tad warmer, and you are more likely to sight arctic wildlife. It’s not just travellers who enjoy frolicking in the 24-hour sun! However, the drawback is that there will be increased tourists and those 200-capacity cruisers might fill up easily.

Having said that, we still reckon it’s one of the top hiking spots in North America for the summertime .

While it’s not a guarantee, there is a chance of sighting the Northern Lights in Greenland. You are most likely to spot this phenomenon during dark, clear nights from September until the beginning of April. Choose a winter tour to Greenland if this is high on your agenda.

There’s no right or wrong – whatever time of year you choose to explore Greenland, you’re in for a visual treat.

Travel Insurance for your Greenland Tour

When booking organised trips to Greenland (or anywhere else, for that matter) you will probably need to take out travel insurance. If you rock up to orientation without proof, your CEO is going to send you straight back home.

Realistically, you’re not looking at any imminent danger. But, natural disasters can strike (remember the havoc reaped by Eyjafjallajökull in 2010) and you’ll want that cover just in case. Plus, flights can go bust, and while the chances of theft on your Greenland vacation are slim, breakages or damage to expensive camera gear are less so.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

What to Pack for Greenland

What to Pack Greenland

One thing you’ll need for any of these tours in Greenland is a strategic packing list. It’s going to be cold, wet, and wintery. In fact, it’ll be downright freezing – this is the Arctic after all. Plus, whichever tour you take, there are some mandatory bits of kit you’ll need. We’ve noted those below, along with a few other essentials.

Below – the VA team should try to link to as many TBB gear review articles as possible – just a reminder.

  • Camera (bring additional memory cards and batteries)
  • Binoculars (highly recommended)
  • Drybag (essential for Zodiac landings)
  • First-aid kit (as well as the obvious essentials, bring a remedy for seasickness. Just in case!)
  • Polarised sunglasses
  • Thermal layers – don’t forget your sexy thermal undies
  • Lighter layers for downtime – all boats are heated sufficiently
  • Fleece/thermal/ down jacket
  • Waterproof trousers (mandatory for any Zodiac landings)
  • Swimsuit (in summer, it is possible to take the polar plunge)
  • Hat, scarf and gloves
  • Footwear with excellent grip (open-toed shoes aren’t permitted in public spaces on the expedition ships)
  • Sunscreen and SPF lip balm
  • Kindle, podcasts, journal , and a pack of cards
  • Outlet adapter (check your booking handbook for electricity voltage onboard)

packable travel medical kit

Things go wrong on the road ALL THE TIME. Be prepared for what life throws at you.

Buy an AMK Travel Medical Kit before you head out on your next adventure – don’t be daft!

And that’s a wrap on the five best tours in Greenland. Now you can evaluate which itinerary speaks to you and go ahead and take the polar plunge to book your arctic voyage.  While all the trips we’ve listed share a common theme of being marine expeditions, the sites do vary significantly. Remember that this expansive island varies depending on which coast you choose to explore. Plus, the further north you sail, the frostier the conditions.

Still can’t decide which Greenland vacation is for you? Our top pick is the Essential Greenland: Southern Coasts and Disko Bay tour. It’s not as costly as the other tours and gives you a well-rounded experience of Greenland’s culture, geology and wildlife.

Whichever trip you pick – Greenland is going to blow your mind. Can we come too?

Adventures on the edge of the habitable world

Greenland holidays.

Dominated by the world’s second largest icecap, Greenland only has a narrow coastal fringe of rugged mountains and green valleys which remain ice free and where a small, resilient community live. 90% of the population live in scattered settlements along the west coast, which includes the capital Nuuk and Disko Bay, renowned for its monumental icebergs. In contrast, East Greenland is virtually uninhabited outside the Ammassalik area. This remote region has breathtaking scenery, ice-flecked fjords and dragonback peaks. Isolated and authentic, South Greenland is not only home to majestic fjords and mighty glaciers, but also rich history and culture.

From May to September coastal fringes shrug off their winter coats and turn green. This is the perfect time to hike the fjords, explore Viking ruins, spot 60 species of breeding birds and admire iceberg-filled bays, a rich feeding ground for whales. Our collection of holidays to Greenland are designed to give a real taste of this epic country and include adventure cruises and land-based holidays.

Planning a trip to Greenland

During the fleeting summer, the pack ice breaks up and giant icebergs drift through the fjords. Migratory birds arrive to breed, animals raise their young and hardy Arctic flora bloom. Summer also brings 24-hour daylight and the beautiful midnight sun.

Our flexible Greenland trips give you a range of ways to explore this great untouched wilderness. Discover the rugged coastline and tranquil Arctic beauty on a voyage . Follow hiking trails along rivers and scale ridges to reach viewpoints across the great Greenland icecap on a walking holiday . Travel through the frozen wilderness on a husky sledge or experience the magnificent scenery on a choice of daily excursions on an independent break . Summer activities include boat trips, 4WD tours and scenic flights.

Don’t forget that Iceland and Greenland are separated by a mere two-hour flight; you could plan a Greenland adventure with a stopover in Reykjavik or hatch a masterplan to combine the two.

Where to go in Greenland

West coast and disko bay.

This is the centre for the fishing industry and the location of the country’s capital, Nuuk, but it is the acclaimed Disko Bay that is the draw for visitors.

South Greenland

This is the island’s agricultural centre and the destination for most visitors seeking outdoor activities. As elsewhere in Greenland, the scenery is amazing but, surprisingly for some, it is particularly colourful.

East Greenland

Settlements in this sparsely inhabited region are almost entirely limited to the Tasiilaq (Ammassalik) area. Tasiilaq is the largest community and the administration centre.

Things To Do in Greenland

Around many of Greenland’s towns, there are well-trodden hiking routes of varying difficulty, ideal for the independent traveller and can be completed within two or three hours depending on your pace and how often you stop to admire the views. In most areas of the country, you do not need to walk far to reach wide open spaces and experience total silence. Guided hikes offer a more immersive and challenging experience.

Alternatively, a guided boat, 4WD or helicopter excursion takes you through the stunning glacial landscape and provide the opportunity to learn about the flora and fauna, as well as local history and geology.

Husky sledding provides the chance to sample a traditional slice of Greenlandic life.

Day 2: Copenhagen - Kangerlussuaq - Camp Ice Cap

In the heart of Copenhagen, the inaugural day of our Greenlandic odyssey unfolds, a day drenched in the hues of anticipation. The airport beckons with promises, whisking us away to the enchanting embrace of Kangerlussuaq in Greenland—a realm steeped in history as an ancient military base and now the sole runway expansive enough for international flights. A seamless four-hour journey finds us descending onto the intimate airstrip of Kangerlussuaq, where the very essence of Greenland envelops us in its raw and isolating embrace. Despite its modest offerings, the airport casts a spell of charm.

Our rendezvous with the Camp Ice Cap team transforms into a moment of eager anticipation, setting the stage for the adventures that lie ahead in our Greenlandic expedition. A robust four-wheel-drive vehicle becomes our chariot as we depart the town, delving into the captivating landscapes that define Greenland's allure. The journey unfolds along Greenland's longest road, a winding tapestry of approximately 40 kilometers, leading us to the mesmerizing Point 660. This vantage point, as meticulously woven into our Greenland vacation itinerary, unveils an awe-inspiring panorama of Greenland's ice cap —an epicenter for the commencement of our odyssey.

Our luggage finds a haven at the Albatros Circle main office in Kangerlussuaq , as we, adorned with only daypacks, choose the path of simplicity. Laden with essential sustenance and camping accouterments on sleds, fortified with hiking poles and crampons, we embark on the pristine ice. Day 3: Camp Ice Cap - Ice Cap Hiking - Kangerlussuaq

In the early morning, amidst the enchanting embrace of the Greenlandic atmosphere, a captivating fairy tale unfurls. Stirred from slumber by the relentless grip of jetlag, we swiftly bundle up in layers, adhering to the carefully crafted ballet of our Greenland itinerary. The chill on the ice cap bites, prompting us to dress warmly – a necessity when you find yourself amidst the starkness of nature. Despite the initial frosty discomfort, the enchantment of breakfast erases all concerns. In such rudimentary conditions, every morsel tastes doubly delightful. With precision, we chip fresh ice, melting it to create water so pure that it could impress even the most discerning of Michelin-star restaurants, concocting our coffee and tea within the communal tent.

The remaining part of the morning is dedicated to the ice cap. A four-hour jaunt unfolds across the undulating ice, covering a mere 5 kilometers, as per the intricate choreography of our Greenland escapade. Contrary to popular belief, the ice cap isn't flat; it presents a continuous series of ascents and descents where our ice spikes become vital. Gracefully navigating the precarious crevices, this adrenaline-filled experience remains etched in our memories, an adventure leaving an indelible mark.

As the expedition culminates, we indulge in croque monsieurs within the tent before disassembling the camp. All equipment is carefully transported on sleds back to Point 660, leaving no trace, in alignment with our commitment to nature conservation, a fundamental tenet of our Greenland sojourn. En route to Kangerlussuaq, as dictated by the evocative chapters of our travel narrative, we make a magical pause at the awe-inspiring Russell Glacier. Here, we savor coffee and tea, soaking in the breathtaking vista. Day 10: Lodge Eqi Glacier - Ilulissat

As the next day unfurls, a delicate morning mist blankets the Greenlandic landscape, akin to a mysterious curtain veiling the world. Undeterred by this ethereal haze, we eagerly join a guided trek to the moraine—the precipice of the magnificent glacier. With every step, we inch closer to the towering ice wall. Despite the mist's attempt at concealment, the view that materializes is nothing short of breathtaking. It's a magical moment within our Greenlandic odyssey, where the essence of time appears to suspend itself.

Our lunch unfolds at the glacier's edge, etching an indelible mark in the tapestry of our Greenlandic journey. Seated amidst the awe-inspiring vista, the ice wall ascends majestically above us, glistening in the soft daylight. The symphony of the wind intertwines with the gentle trickle of melting streams, rendering us minuscule in the embrace of nature's grandeur.

As the afternoon sun wanes, we re-embark on the Disko Line Explorers, hearts aglow with reverence for the Eqi Glacier's beauty. The return voyage to Ilulissat feels like a reverie—a moment for contemplation of all we've encountered. Weary yet content, we embark on a leisurely stroll through Ilulissat, the town that has stolen our hearts. The evening culminates in serene repose at Hotel Arctic , marking the poignant conclusion of our extraordinary two-day sojourn to the Eqi Glacier and the fulfillment of our 10-day Greenlandic itinerary.

Day 11: Ilulissat - Copenhagen

On the ultimate day of our spellbinding Greenlandic sojourn, the dawn unfolds, signaling the commencement of our homeward journey to Denmark. Departing from the picturesque Ilulissat, we board an inland flight in a propeller plane, bound for Kangerlussuaq—the very place where our remarkable ten-day odyssey embarked. As we ascend above the awe-inspiring Greenlandic landscape, we gaze through the aircraft window, savoring the final panorama of majestic fjords and icebergs that define this extraordinary land.

Upon touching down in Kangerlussuaq, we pause to reflect on the myriad adventures that have unfolded here, from traversing the expansive ice cap to immersing ourselves in the vibrant local culture. A window of time presents itself to explore the quaint charm of this town before we catch our connecting flight, whisking us back to Copenhagen before the sun sets.

Drifting amidst the Arctic heights, the profound realization sets in that we are bidding adieu to Greenland. Yet, the tapestry of memories woven during this extraordinary journey will forever resonate within us. Our exploration of Greenland metamorphosed into a saga of marvel and discovery, and as we bid farewell to this enchanting land, we carry with us the conviction that it has indelibly become a cherished chapter in our lives. The enduring glow of the midnight sun serves as a beacon, beckoning us to return to this magical realm, where the echoes of our Greenlandic escapade linger eternally.

Day 12: Copenhagen - Brussels

After an enchanting sojourn through the verdant landscapes and majestic icescapes of Greenland over the course of 10 remarkable summer days, our return journey from Copenhagen to Brussels marks the bittersweet conclusion of this exceptional adventure. Yet, as one chapter concludes, the unfolding saga of exploration persists, beckoning us to new horizons and undiscovered realms. For those captivated by the allure of further discovery, the prospect of extending this memorable journey with a vibrant city break in Copenhagen emerges as an enticing option.

In the heart of Denmark's capital, experience the warm embrace of Danish hospitality, delight in culinary masterpieces, and uncover cultural treasures that add profound depth to the tapestry of your Greenland vacation. Alternatively, for the intrepid explorer thirsting for more, Denmark unfurls its scenic coastlines and rich historical sites as additional promises of delight.

Venturing even farther, the remote and enigmatic Faroe Islands emerge as a captivating extension of this Greenlandic odyssey, offering an unparalleled destination for those eager to continue their exploration. Regardless of the path chosen to extend this journey, one immutable truth remains: the indelible memories forged during this 10-day Greenland vacation will forever be treasured. They not only serve as a testament to the captivating allure of Greenland's tourist attractions but also as an inspiration to embark on new adventures, whether within the pristine landscapes of Greenland or in the uncharted territories that beckon across the globe.

Our Greenland Holiday: What We Would Do Differently

Having immersed ourselves in the enchanting tapestry of Greenland's landscapes, our hearts resonate with the echoes of a journey filled with awe and discovery. Reflecting on this extraordinary Greenland vacation, we find ourselves contemplating adjustments that could elevate the tapestry of experiences for future adventurers.

Add and extra day in Kangerlussuaq

Our first consideration unfolds like the pages of a novel, suggesting an additional day in Kangerlussuaq . This Arctic haven, adorned with engaging activities, nearly eluded our grasp. The allure of a Tundra Safari beckons—a venture into the Arctic wilderness accompanied by a local guide, promising encounters with reindeer, musk oxen, and other Arctic denizens. Beyond the fauna, the vantage points from the hills offer breathtaking panoramas, a respite to recover from the journey's rigors and acclimate to the Arctic embrace. A crucial addition, especially after the exhilarating yet taxing ice cap expedition that immediately followed our arrival.

Only have one night on Disko Island instead of two

As the narrative unfolds, a second consideration dances into view—the prospect of one less night on Disko Island. For those abstaining from the glacier hike, a single overnight stay might suffice, freeing time for more leisurely explorations and a deeper immersion in Greenland's allure. This adjustment invites the opportunity to unravel more layers of this Arctic wonder.

Add a settlement to our Greenland Itinerary

In the chapters yet to be written in our Greenlandic odyssey, the settlement of Oqaatsut emerges as an unexplored destination. An authentic Arctic community, its untold stories and cultural richness missed in our initial passage. The inkling of a return to Greenland takes root, promising not just revisits but fresh encounters.

The desire to visit Ilimanaq blossoms, where the culinary delights of the Michelin-starred restaurant KOKS whisper promises of an unparalleled gastronomic experience—a facet of Greenland's charm we long to embrace. These contemplated adjustments, akin to the nuanced strokes of an artist refining a masterpiece, render our future journey to Greenland even more comprehensive, weaving a tapestry of unique experiences waiting to be etched into the collective memory of explorers yet to come.

Traveling to Greenland

Flying to greenland: from copenhagen to kangerlussuaq with air greenland.

Wondering how to travel to Greenland? The options unfold like a roadmap – flights with layovers in Copenhagen (Denmark) or Keflavik (Iceland), courtesy of Air Greenland or Icelandair . Most flights to Greenland from Copenhagen land in Kangerlussuaq, but it is also possible to arrive directly in the capital, Nuuk, via Iceland. To travel from Kangerlussuaq to Ilulissat, you need to take a smaller plane that can accommodate about forty passengers. In the summer, return flights between Copenhagen and Ilulissat cost between €600 and €1000.

The connections to Greenland are almost daily from Copenhagen during summer. However, traveling to Greenland is a journey that requires some planning, especially if you're planning on venturing further into Greenland than Kangerlussuaq. You also have to consider the weather. Sometimes domestic flights are canceled due to excessive wind or poor visibility, which makes it impossible to land. Sometimes flights are even diverted to Nuuk to accommodate passengers until better weather conditions.

Travel in Greenland: how to get from Kangerlussuaq to other cities

Greenland's landscape, lacking roads, calls for creative transit. Travel in Greenlands happens mostly by water or in the air. In summer, the boat is the preferred mode of transportation. From Ilulissat, we regularly used Disko Line to reach places like Qeqertarsuaq or the Eqi Glacier. For a crossing from Ilulissat to Qeqertarsuaq, you need to pay around €100 for a single trip. Apart from the Disko Bay, Disko Line also serves the south of Greenland and the west from Nuuk to Sisimiut. You can basically hop the entire Western coast of Greenland from North to South or the other way around by boat.

In winter, often the preferred mode of travel is internal flights or helicopter transfers. A spectacular experience but definitely more pricy than the boat. The schedule is also less reliable since strongly dependent on the weather and the use of helicopters by the locals.

Our favorite places to stay in Greenland

Selecting accommodation for your trip to greenland.

In the magical Greenland, there are a few unforgettable places to stay and immerse yourself in the enchanting beauty of this Arctic paradise. However, in Ilulissat and Qeqertarsuaq, accommodations quickly fill up in the summer, and the choice is limited. This led us to book the majority of our trip nine months in advance.

Other places to stay in Greenland

  • Hotel Disko Island in Qeqertarsuaq : on Disko Island, we booked two nights in a hotel located in the middle of the village. Some rooms have private bathrooms, while others have shared bathrooms. There is a common kitchen and sitting area if you wish to prepare your meals. The hotel has its own restaurant with very good cuisine. Highly recommended!
  • Glacier Lodge Eqi : staying a night near the Eqi Glacier was one of my dreams during this trip. The budget is substantial - expect around €1200 for two people - as it includes ferry crossings, accommodation, and full board, but it was an unforgettable experience!

Where to Eat in Greenland

Dining out in Ilulissat can take up a considerable portion of your budget. You can easily expect €20 for a dish, such as a burger or quesadilla. If you're on a limited travel budget, we recommend booking accommodations with a kitchen to cook your meals.

Ilulissat is a large city and offers several supermarkets open until 9:00 PM. You will find a wide range of products, including everything you need. However, the supply of fresh vegetables and fruits is more limited compared to what we are used to on the European mainland. We came across at least four different Spar stores, spread throughout the city. In Qeqertarsuaq, there is also a large supermarket, open until 6:00 PM, near the ferry stop and Hotel Disko Island.

For those who prefer eating out and are looking for authentic Greenlandic or international dishes, there are various dining options to enjoy. A must-visit is Inuit Café  or  Café Iluliaq   for international cuisine. Here, dishes like croque monsieurs and burgers are on the menu.

Don't forget to enjoy a meal with a view at 'Restaurant Ulo' in the Arctic Hotel, where you can indulge in gourmet meals while overlooking the majestic ice fjord. Each week, they host a Greenlandic buffet where you can taste classic dishes such as 'Mattak' (whale skin) and 'Kiviak' (fermented sea birds in a seal skin) and delightful Snow Crab. Whether you opt for traditional Greenlandic dishes or international flavors, Ilulissat offers something for everyone to complete your culinary exploration.

First time visiting Greenland? You're going to need a boat-load of tips to get your started © Aningaaq R Carlsen / Visit Greenland

Greenland , the world’s largest island, is a country of wild extremes: uninhabitable wilderness at its core, and delightfully warm and charming people living in harmony with it. Climbers come to scale its spectacular sheer rock faces, scientists come to see what the melting ice can tell us of the planet’s future and many visitors come away with a whole new perspective on life.

There’s no question that the must-see attraction for everyone who visits Greenland is ‘big nature,’ from the black peaks that undulate on the horizon, to the great gray-blue ice sheet in the center of the island and the icebergs scattered in the sea around it. Muskox , arctic fox and polar bears roam around, and the northern lights dance in the sky above.

Inhabited since 2,500 BCE, with Viking colonies in the south from the 10th century, Greenland has developed a unique culture and set of beliefs based on its people’s strong relationship with the mountains, ice and sea that surrounds them. It’s impossible not to come away feeling awestruck by what nature can create.

When should I go to Greenland?

Greenland is a huge island with vast seasonal and geographical variations, and its weather can be unstable and unpredictable all year round. Be sure to take out travel insurance in the event of flight cancellations, and keep plans as loose as possible as schedules can change suddenly.

For snow, dog sledding and the northern lights, the best time to visit is from late September to May.

If you are keen to do adventure sports like hiking, climbing or kayaking, the Greenlandic summer is more suitable. This period, from May to September, promises more hours of daylight.

A man walks acros the pass over Imertivap near Tasiilaq in East Greenland and is seen through a cave with snow all around

Where should I go in Greenland ?

Getting around Greenland is complicated (see below). The best advice is to choose one region to explore, or two at most, and spend a week there. This allows you to see the key natural sights and animals without feeling rushed, meet local people (who can be reticent), and have the flexibility to adapt if plans change due to bad weather.

As an example, you could choose to stay in the Ilulissat ice fjord region, where there are options for hiking, whale watching, exploring Disko Bay and perhaps the ice cap over the course of a week. If you want to follow the Arctic Circle Trail , again, that’s a one-to-two-week trip. Factor in that you’ll likely need to fly via Denmark or Iceland, potentially adding a night to the trip in either direction. And as mentioned, there may be unexpected events due to the weather.

Is it easy to get in and around Greenland?

In early 2025, an extension to Nuuk airport will allow larger planes to land in Greenland, making it easier to reach from international destinations. Until the new runways open, flights to Greenland go via Reykjavik and Copenhagen into the country’s international airports, Nuuk, Kangerslussuaq and Ilulissat. Kulusuk and Narsarsuaq are also entry points from Reykjavik.

Greenland is large and largely without roads. To travel between towns, Air Greenland flies to those with runways and runs helicopters to others. From April to December, the Arctic Umiaq Line runs coastal ferries from Qaqortoq in the south to Ilulissat in the north, with stops along the way. The full journey takes 4.5 days. Other ferries and coastal boats run up the west coast and across South Greenland in summer.

Within towns there are buses, taxis and cars, and you can also walk. It is advisable to book far in advance to secure a place (and for the best rates), and to have clear transport plans when you arrive in Greenland.

Top things to do in Greenland

Be awed by nature and humbled by culture. For the nature part, take a boat from Ilulissat, Nuuk or Qaqortoq and spend a day cruising the ice fjords, marveling at immense blue, white and gray icebergs and encountering all kinds of sea life from humpback whales to dolphins. Hike in the mountains surrounding the small town of Narsarsuaq and admire the ice sheet – you can even camp overnight on it at Camp Ice Cap near Kangerlussuaq.

Then immerse yourself in local culture and discover how people in Greenland really live. Experience the warmth of community and the power of history in a kaffemik, a local coffee morning, in Nuuk or Qaqortoq, or book into a wilderness camp and try Greenlandic glamping, with a side of fishing and foraging, for a true back-to-nature immersion in the country’s outdoors-driven lifestyle.

My favorite thing to do in Greenland

Nature watching in Greenland is off-the-chart amazing. You could spend all day cruising between icebergs and comparing their shapes and colors – and then there’s the wildlife. To see a sliver of a whale's back slip out of the water while you’re on a boat on the way to another town is sensational. The day I saw a polar bear climb a remote coastal cliff and disappear over a ridge remains one of the most memorable days of my life. These sights are framed by seas studded with icebergs, clear blue skies, uninhabited land and dark, jagged mountains, creating the most powerful punch of natural drama I’ve ever seen.

How much money do I need?

Greenland is not a cheap destination, but you can do it on a budget. Flight deals can be found outside the main summer season – a tip is to sign up to Air Greenland’s newsletter. As a general guide, a bed in a youth hostel in Nuuk will cost from around £100 per night, while a hotel will be around £200 per night. Luxury wilderness experiences typically cost at least £250 per night.

In terms of domestic transport, it is typically cheaper to take a boat rather than fly or take a helicopter. Booking in advance can also save money, but what you save in money you lose in time.

Greenland’s food is expensive – expect to spend around £25 for an evening meal in a restaurant – because so much of it has to be flown in. Save money by eating as locally as much as possible and cutting back on greens. A locally brewed beer might cost around £8 for a pint, while a coffee costs around £6. Bring a reusable water bottle as all Greenlandic water is drinkable.

Bring lots of layers, no matter the season

As mentioned, Greenland’s weather is highly changeable all year round, so pack with that in mind. Bring woolen layers, hiking boots, gloves, sunscreen, sunglasses and a snood at the very least. Hiking in jeans and city-style trainers is not recommended.

A view across a river to the town of Ilulissat, Greenland showing the Aurora illuminating the sky green

The northern lights can be seen throughout the year

Typically, northern lights season in Greenland runs from September until April, but check with the region you plan to visit to be sure. It’s possible to see the lights all year round, depending on where in Greenland you are, but you need a dark, cloudless night. The midnight sun takes over from June to July in the Arctic Circle region and April to August in more northerly locations, and then you will experience barely any darkness.

Greenlandic is the official language

Greenlanders speak Greenlandic; Danish is also used and many people, particularly in major hubs, speak English.

Staying safe in Greenland

Weather is one of the key risks in the country, so stay aware of the forecast, carry a GPS with you and know how to use a map. Tell someone where you are going before you set off. Wildlife risks can include polar bears and rabid arctic foxes. Calving icebergs can cause tsunamis and be fatal for those on boats. Travel insurance that covers all the activities you might do in Greenland is a must.

Etiquette notes

Note that the word Eskimo is considered an inappropriate term; Inuit is preferred.

View of Kulusuk village in Greenland on a clear sunny day with colourful houses in view

About 4,500 years ago, early man migrated thousands of perilous miles from Canada into Greenland.

And when they got there and saw the ice-covered mountains, glaciers and resident polar bears, they stopped and said ‘Yep, this looks like the spot.’ And who can blame them? It may be cold, but the unfenced wilderness of the world’s biggest (and least populated) island is worth wearing a scarf 11 months of the year for. Although technically still part of Denmark , Greenland is now self-governing and has a proud Inuit culture. And with no crowds, little crime and only a few roads to break up the endless ice flow, it’s easy to see the appeal (just don’t forget that scarf).

Best time to visit greenland.

Generally the summer months of June, July and August are the time to see Greenland, but it does depend what you’re looking for. At midyear the country isn’t as chilly as it can be (temperatures can rise as high as a sweltering 15°C…) and you’ll get to experience the phenomenon of the midnight sun. Of course, if it’s the night lights of the aurora borealis you’re after, the time to go is definitely October through to March, when temperatures can plummet to well below freezing. Pack accordingly.

Geography and environment

When 84 per cent of your country is covered in the world’s largest ice sheet (and the rest is classed as permafrost), geography may seem kind of self-explanatory. But Greenland’s coastal fringes are where most of the magic happens. Plunging fjords, rocky promontories, trundling glaciers calving off into the Labrador Sea. Most of the settlements along the western coast are colourful wooden houses painted every colour of the rainbow. Towns and settlements are virtually cut-off from each other (roads are very rare in Greenland), so most trade and movement is done by sea and air.

Top 5 wildlife experiences in Greenland

1. humpback whale.

Humpback whales migrate to the cooler waters of the Arctic to feed each year. It’s a mammoth journey, often spanning thousands of kilometres (and all at travelling just a few kilometres per hour). That’s probably why humpbacks like to blow off a bit of steam in Greenland. Around Aasiaat, Qeqertarsuaq and Sisimiut between April and November it’s not an uncommon sight to see a 30-tonne humpback leaping clear out of the water.

In the Middle Ages, Inuits and Norse tribesmen would trade narwhal horns for fabulous sums (they were the marine equivalent of a unicorn). Thankfully the horn trade is over and these beautiful toothed whales can swim and eat in peace. They’re usually found in Melville Bay and around Qaanaaq, where their spiralling three-metre tusk can be seen poking through the surface of the water.

3. Polar bear

This is the world’s largest land predator, and the chances of seeing one increase when you’re on the water. Cruising along the coast of west or north-east Greenland is your best shot at spotting one of these creatures, but don’t hold your breath – they can be quite aloof. But the good news is that if they are out there, they are quite easy to see due to their off-white fur standing out against the snow-white ice.

4. Arctic fox

Technically there are two types of Arctic fox in Greenland – the classic white and the blue. Both species change colour depending on the season in order to blend in with the rocky landscape and the polar ice sheet. Arctic foxes live on an almost exclusive diet of lemmings – so when lemming populations drop, so do the number of foxes. Thankfully numbers are strong, and the Arctic fox isn’t a threatened species.

5. White-tailed eagle

Don’t forget to look up every now and then: Greenland has a huge and colourful variety of birdlife. The biggest and most striking bird is the white-tailed eagle (known as the nattoralik in Greenlandic). You’ll usually find them circling along the west coast down to Cape Farewell, hoping to find a cod, char or smaller sea bird to stoop. These birds are as rare as they are beautiful, and are officially a protected species in Greenland.

What our customers say

The organisation of the trip, from flights to transfers to activities to accommodation, was excellent throughout. We went for 3 nights in a Kelo-Igloo, deciding to combine the comfort of a wonderfully warm lodge with the novelty of the glass igloo and a view from the bed of the sky and the snow. The accommodation was spotlessly clean and well-equipped, and we made good use of the sauna!!

When Is The Best Time To Visit Greenland?

Greenland is an adventure regardless of the season, but depending on the activities and sights you would like to see, the best time to visit Greenland differs.

The peak months that are recommended as the best time to visit would be between May and September, during the summer when temperatures are at their highest. Ice and snow tend to melt during this time, allowing easy access to fjords, iceberg-filled bays, and mountains for hiking opportunities.

The days are long, and you may find that the dark does not come, even 24 hours later – in this case, do not forget to watch the midnight sun as it rises and sets. The summer months are perfect for sightseeing the local wildlife like the musk oxen and flora on the tundra, and to watch whales as they soar above the Greenlandic waters.

However, if you are particularly interested in seeing the Northern Lights, the autumn to spring months in Greenland are ideal as the skies begin to darken considerably during this period. Do not overlook these seasons for travelling to Greenland, as there is still plenty to do, with even fewer tourists around.

What the Climate is Like in Greenland

Greenland is located in the polar climate zone, meaning its climate is arctic to subarctic. The summer months are warmer, with temperatures rising to 20°C and higher, especially in July in the southern areas of the country. The coldest seasons, however, are usually from winter to spring, with average temperatures typically not exceeding 6°C.

In spite of this, it is worth noting that the level of moisture in the air in Greenland is low, meaning the weather may not be as cold as expected, so the cold climate is not something to be afraid of. The low humidity also means that you may be able to see further than usual, which can be useful for hikes and sightseeing.

Where To Go In Greenland

Greenland is becoming an attractive tourist destination with a range of tourist attractions and activities that make it a unique and unforgettable place to visit.

Ilulissat is located in western Greenland, with a small population of less than 6,000. The nearby Illulissat Icefjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an impressive glacier with large icebergs in Disko Bay . It is a picturesque scene that can be explored via kayak or hiking. Another glacier close to Ilulissat is the Eqip Sermia, with boat tours taking off from Ilulissat towards the glacier. Tourist spots within the city include the Ilulissat Art Museum for art lovers, and the popular Church of Zion.

For those who would like a journey into Greenlandic history and culture, the capital of Greenland, Nuuk, is the place to be. It is home to a range of museums, from the Greenland National Museum to the Katuaq Cultural Centre. Located in Nuuk is the historic Hans Egede House, the oldest surviving structure besides Viking settlement ruins, the latter of which can also be found in Nuuk.

On the east coast of the country lies Tasiilaq, a beautiful town surrounded by mountains and glaciers. At this remote town, you can explore the true Greenlandic environment by hiking its rugged mountains, sailing, dog sledding, and iceberg diving alongside the majestic fjord waters.

How to Get Around in Greenland

Greenland spans over 2.166 million km², the biggest island on Earth. It can be difficult to get around the country as there are no trains or roads between the settlements. Within the settlements themselves, there are buses and even taxis, but if you are wanting to get from one town to another, you will need to organise a plane, dog sledding, or boat, so it is the perfect adventure for tourists.

Going on a holiday needn’t be a fraught experience …

The experts: travel agents on 20 ways to book a sustainable and sensational summer holiday

Keen to get away? Here is how to find a great deal, pick the perfect destination and support the local community

A holiday should be relaxing, but booking one can be a fraught experience, with days lost to endless scrolling, comparing reviews and prices. How can you be sure you are getting a good deal? Travel agents share their tips for the most affordable, sustainable and memorable trips.

1. Book like an agent

“Everybody views themselves as a travel agent and they can be up to a point,” says Paul Sharp from Newcastle upon Tyne, who operates as part of the Travel Counsellors network and has 30 years’ experience in the industry. He says the rise of budget airlines and online booking have led to people feeling confident about organising trips themselves. What is the one thing we should know when doing so? “It is a false economy to book things separately because you have no protection,” Sharp says. He gives the example of someone planning a trip to South Africa to watch rugby, who booked flights with the airline and hotels directly and rugby tickets elsewhere. The game was cancelled but the flights and hotel were non-refundable. If they had been booked together, the trip would have been covered under package travel regulations. “Book with a company you trust and know – there are a lot of sites that crop up and you don’t really know their provenance,” he says.

2. Be an early bird

“Planning in advance is always going to be better value,” says Helen Youngman , an independent travel agent and partner at 360 Private Travel , based near Norwich. “Late deals do exist, but a lot of hotels use ‘dynamic pricing’, which means prices increase as availability goes down. Flights are only going to increase in price the closer you get to the departure date because the fuller the flight gets, the more expensive it will be.” Sharp adds: “Don’t hang on for a last-minute deal because you could end up disappointed. Scheduled flights tend to be available about 11 months in advance, so that is the best time to book. Also, at that stage, a lot of hotels and accommodation providers will have early-bird specials.”

3. If you do book late, be flexible

Be open-minded …

Jessica Bollinger, who works in the Bristol branch of Danish travel agent Kilroy , which specialises in youth and adventure holidays, agrees that late deals are now something of a myth. “They are not unheard of, but with a last-minute deal there are certain things you’re not going to get. So you have to be really open-minded as to where you’re going to go,” she says.

4. Avoid peak season

The cheapest time to travel is always outside the school holidays, says Youngman, with Christmas and new year the most expensive times. Can you get a good deal if you fly on Christmas or New Year’s Day itself? Sometimes, she says, “but a lot of people are catching on to that trick”. If you have to go in the school holidays, be open to going somewhere off the beaten track. “Being clever about destinations is a good plan,” says Youngman. “In Europe, look farther east at places such as Montenegro, Albania and Georgia. And Morocco is a good summer destination for families.”

5. Midweek can be more affordable

“Midweek can be cheaper, it just depends on availability,” says Youngman. “A Thursday to Monday trip is going to be slightly more expensive than Monday to Friday, but all travel fares are based on availability, so the further in advance you can book, the better.”

6. Take out travel insurance when you book

A lot of people sort out their insurance at the airport, says Sharp, but it is best to do it as soon as you have booked your trip. He says: “Travel insurance doesn’t just cover you if you lose a bag or are poorly while you are away. It also covers you should you need to cancel for an insurable reason before you travel.” This includes illness or a bereavement.

7. On solo trips, consider a group tour

‘Some companies offer specialist female-only tours.’

If you are travelling alone, “pretty much anywhere is possible”, says Youngman. “Embarking on your first solo trip can be daunting, which is why small group tours are an amazing way to travel with like-minded people. Some companies I work with are doing specialist female-only tours with visits to female entrepreneurs, co-operatives, makers and bakers. Small group tours are great because they handle all the logistics, include really immersive experiences and are safe. They pick you up from the airport, and from that point onwards, you’re travelling with other people and you’ve got an expert guide.”

8. Have a daily budget

“We advise setting a daily limit for yourself while travelling and then multiplying that number by the days you are away to get the amount to save for your spending money,” says Bollinger. “When you work it out like this, it makes a lot more sense in people’s minds, especially young people who don’t have much budgeting experience. It also keeps you accountable to yourself, so you don’t blow everything right at the beginning and then have nothing left for the end.” To stick to a tight budget, she says: “Cook food as you go along and use public transport instead of tourist buses – this will really help you save money.”

9. Consider all-inclusive options

“If you are going to spend a lot of time eating and drinking in the hotel, I recommend upgrading to an all-inclusive option if possible,” says Youngman, “especially if you’d like a cocktail or two and you’re grazing throughout the day. Otherwise it can all add up and when you check out it costs a fortune.” With active holidays such as skiing or safaris, she adds: “If you have the option to choose an all-inclusive package that includes the activities, food and drink, that is usually a more cost-effective way of travelling. Because sometimes they will really sting you on the extras and it will be more expensive.”

10. Work your way around the world

“A working holiday is a great way to fund your trip,” says Bollinger, who helps people book travel to Australia, New Zealand and Canada by organising working holidays so they can extend their stay. “A lot of jobs will be hospitality-related, but if you go to a more rural spot you can do farm work, and if you have qualifications already, sometimes those can be used. Working holidays in Canada are often at ski resorts near Vancouver, so you get the added benefit of being in a beautiful place to take advantage of the winter sports.”

11. Travel as sustainably as possible

‘By travelling sustainably, you have more time to absorb the culture surrounding you.’

“You can get to most places in Europe by train , so if you are open to slowing down and having a more relaxed itinerary, not only are you travelling more sustainably, but you have more time to absorb the culture surrounding you,” says Youngman. “Be good to the environment you are travelling to see.” She stresses the importance of limiting flights as much as possible, especially internally, and avoiding indirect long-haul options. “We highly recommend ‘open-jaw flights’, which means you fly into one destination and out of another, to limit the number of flights,” says Bollinger. “We also promote travelling for longer in one destination as opposed to trying to go to many in a short time, and travelling overland when possible, instead of taking multiple flights.”

12. Offset carbon emissions with a reputable company

When considering carbon from flights, says Thomas Power of Pura Aventura , a B Corp sustainable travel company in Brighton: “Don’t believe the airline schemes, or anyone else who promises you absolution for a few quid. While 85% of offset schemes may be worthless, there are high-quality carbon credits starting at about £20 a tonne.” These can be bought to compensate for CO 2 emissions. Companies such as “ C Level help you at least take positive action to balance your impact”, says Power.

13. Think of responsible travel as a ‘fair exchange’

When travelling, says Power, consider: “What are we giving and what are we receiving? Is it a fair exchange? Is somebody getting something in return for what I am receiving in this transaction?” This applies to everything from “taking a cruise to Venice and not giving anything to the city, to going camping in Sussex and getting a supermarket delivery to your tent instead of going to the village shop or buying eggs from the house down the road”. This concept of “fair exchange” can be beneficial for everyone, he says, by giving you access to unique experiences. “In terms of the economy, the less money that leaves the village, town or city, the better,” he says.

14. Embrace the great outdoors

‘The carbon footprints of outdoor holidays tend to be much lower than hotel stays.’

If you camp out “you are closer to nature than any other accommodation option”, says Brodie Farrow, of the online camping and touring travel agent Pitchup . There are many benefits to this, she says: “It is really good for mental health. It is also a much more sustainable option: the carbon footprints of outdoor holidays tend to be much lower than hotel stays, as people travel by car rather than flying and it promotes local produce and low-impact activities such as hiking in the surrounding area. The accommodation or pitches are much less carbon intensive than hotels, too. And you have a positive impact on the community that you are visiting: camping attracts a higher number of customers at a lower cost than hotels do, which can help to underpin the viability of local facilities such as the shop, the bar and takeaway, and that benefits the wider community.”

15. If you are camping-phobic, glamp

“There really is something for everyone,” says Farrow. “You can get glamping accommodation with four-poster beds if you prefer camping in luxury, or you can go really wild and remote, with no facilities, out on your own and back to nature. I think you would be hard-pressed to say that there is nothing that appeals.” Although glamping has become a fairly pricey option, she says: “Some types are much cheaper than others. You can get some ‘pod-only’ camping accommodation, where you bring your own bedding, starting from £15 a night.”

16. If the weather is terrible …

… And you are under canvas, “try to keep your bedroom a wet-gear-free zone”, says Farrow. “Store and dry wet stuff in your porch area rather than in your bedroom compartment. Protect your equipment by putting it in plastic bags or dry bags. Don’t let anything touch your tent walls or you will have soggy socks.” For activities, she suggests, “swimming in the sea, because you are wet already, or going to the pub”. If you are disappointed by the weather on a non-camping holiday, “as annoying as it is, try to embrace it”, says Sharp. Many people come back from their holidays exhausted because they try to see and do everything when they’re away. Instead, he says: “Have a lie-in, ask local people which is the best restaurant for a long, lazy lunch and, most of all, relax and recharge your batteries – it’s a holiday after all.”

17. For best value destinations, try …

Belgrade has an underground culture scene similar to Berlin 20 years ago.

“Go for Belgrade over Berlin,” says Youngman. “It has an underground culture scene very similar to Berlin 20 years ago.” For backpackers, Bollinger suggests: “Some places in Central America can be really affordable. Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala are good options for someone wanting to think outside the box.” Sharp says there are more affordable options in “Cyprus, Bulgaria, Turkey and Egypt, compared with Spain and the Balearics, which are becoming increasingly expensive due to cost of living increases”. If you are looking for a staycation, North Yorkshire, Cumbria and Cornwall are some of the most popular UK locations on Pitchup, says Farrow, which can inflate the price. Locations such as Pembrokeshire and the Isle of Wight are cheaper.

18. For a trip of a lifetime that doesn’t cost the earth …

“North Macedonia is just amazing,” says Youngman. “Ohrid has beautiful cobbled streets, Ottoman architecture , fantastic food and wine and you can visit the most biodiverse lake in Europe.” Farrow says: “I camped at the foot of Ben Nevis last year before hiking up it. The weather was terrible but it was worth it for the unreal views.” While Bollinger’s most memorable trip was “Interrailing in Europe and finding a way to do things on my own. It was before smartphones, so it was a very interesting experience and built up my confidence in travelling.”

19. If in doubt, follow local people

“Live like a local person by taking local buses and eating in local spots,” says Bollinger. “It is going to save you money, and will also let you experience life in a different way.” Power adds: “People want to go to Peru but they never come back talking about Machu Picchu, they come back talking about the people they met. Buy local and connections will happen for you. In the absence of interaction with your host community, the things you see are just wallpaper.”

20. And remember: you get what you pay for

“If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is,” says Sharp.
