Technology today is changing our everyday lives. Many people, however, aren’t aware that technology also is impacting dentistry in new and exciting ways. Cutting-edge innovations in dental instruments are requiring less time in the dental chair, causing less discomfort and creating satisfying results. One breakthrough instrument, called CEREC ® , allows dentists to quickly restore damaged teeth with natural-colored ceramic fillings, saving patients time and inconvenience.

What is CEREC?

CEREC is an acronym for C hairside E conomical R estoration of E sthetic C eramics, or CERamic REConstruction. Translated, it means that a dentist can economically restore damaged teeth in a single appointment using a high-quality ceramic material that matches the natural color of other teeth.

How does the instrument work?

CEREC uses CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology, incorporating a camera, computer and milling machine in one instrument. The dentist uses a special camera to take an accurate picture of the damaged tooth. This optical impression is transferred and displayed on a color computer screen, where the dentist uses CAD technology to design the restoration. Then CAM takes over and automatically creates the restoration while the patient waits. Finally, the dentist bonds the new restoration to the surface of the old tooth. The whole process takes about one hour.

What does this innovation mean for a patient?

A tooth-colored restoration means no more silver fillings discoloring smiles. The filling is natural-looking, compatible with tissue in the mouth, anti-abrasive and plaque-resistant. Dentists no longer need to create temporaries or take impressions and send them to a lab. Because of this, the traditional second visit has been eliminated. CEREC has two decades of clinical research and documentation to support the technology. The restorations have been proven precise, safe and effective.

Using cutting-edge technology to provide more convenient treatment options.

If your schedule is constantly packed due to work, school, or ferrying your kids to and from different activities, the idea of setting aside time for multiple dental appointments to receive a dental crown may sound daunting. Thankfully, single visit crowns use cutting-edge technology to provide you with an alternative option. As their name implies, these crowns can be placed in just one visit to our office, saving you valuable time and making them a convenient treatment option for many people. These traits alone make single visit crowns incredibly appealing, but there’s more to the treatment than this. Here are 10 things you might not know about single visit crowns .

1. Single visit crowns only take two hours to place.

While traditional porcelain crowns take two or three visits over the course of several weeks to place, your same day crown can be designed, milled, and placed in about two hours. That really is it—at the end of your appointment, you’ll have your complete restoration. This short turnaround reduces the amount of time you’ll have to take off work or how much you’ll have to shuffle your schedule around to receive your crown.

2. They’re made of the same durable porcelain as traditional crowns.

The quick placement and increased convenience of same day crowns doesn’t come at the cost of quality, as they’re made from the same porcelain material as traditional lab-milled crowns. This porcelain is durable enough to withstand the same daily wear and tear as your natural teeth, so you can chew and bite into your food without worrying about your crown—just keep in mind that it’s not indestructible, and the same actions that risk damaging your natural teeth can damage your new crown. As a result, you should avoid cracking nuts, crunching down on ice, or opening packaging with your teeth.

3. They look just as natural as traditional porcelain crowns.

Since they’re made from the same materials, same day crowns look just as natural as their lab-milled counterparts. They match the gloss of natural teeth and the crown’s shape, size, and shade is designed specifically for you, allowing it to blend in with your natural teeth. No one will know you have a crown, let alone which tooth it’s on!

4. Single visit crowns eliminate the need for messy, gross-tasting putties.

If you’ve gotten a dental impression in the past, you might have experienced the messy, gross-tasting putties that dentists have been using for years. Thankfully, CEREC’s technology kicks this putty to the curb, using a digital scanner to produce detailed 3D models of your teeth. The process is quick and easy: all Dr. Matz or Dr. Ellingson have to do is pass a small wand, which is about the size of an electric toothbrush, over your teeth. Since a few rogue air bubbles can mess with the accuracy of a putty impression, the 3D model created by CEREC’s digital scanner is more than just more comfortable—it’s also more accurate!

5. They fit perfectly thanks to CEREC’s digital imaging technology.

The 3D model of your teeth that the scanner creates allows your dentist to design and make changes to your dental crown quickly and easily, all before it’s milled. Your dentist uses the 3D model to look at the way the crown will interact with the teeth next to it—ensuring it doesn’t put too much pressure on them—adjust the thickness or shape of the crown in certain areas, and check to make sure it fits perfectly with your bite. This helps ensure your new crown fits right away, with less time dedicated to making adjustments to get it to fit correctly.

6. Single visit crowns offer increased comfort.

Since they take only a single appointment to place, same day crowns cut down on the amount of discomfort you’ll experience during the placement process. In addition to avoiding the uncomfortable and nasty-tasting process of getting a putty impression, you’ll only have to get numbing shots—and the infamous fat-lip sensation that goes with them—once. Plus, while a traditional dental crown will leave your mouth sore at least twice, first when your tooth is prepared and later when the crown is placed, same day crowns ensure that you’ll only have to deal with a sore mouth once. This makes the entire experience, from the procedure itself to the healing process, much more comfortable.

7. They have a wide range of uses.

Dental crowns are most well-known for protecting teeth after they’ve undergone a root canal, but not everyone who needs a crown needs a root canal. Crowns can be used for a wide range of restorative and cosmetic procedures, including repairing a broken or severely worn down tooth, capping a dental implant, protecting a weak tooth, or covering a tooth that’s misshapen, crooked, or stained. Even if you don’t need a root canal, there are a number of reasons you might want a dental crown; same day crowns have the potential to benefit you in these circumstances.

8. Single visit crowns aren’t ideal for everyone in every situation.

Same day crowns work for almost everyone in a wide range of situations, but like any treatment, it has its limits. Only one crown can be milled at a time, so it’s best to get lab-milled crowns if you’re getting multiple crowns at once. Lab-milled crowns are also best if you’re getting a crown for one of your front teeth because labs have access to more refined shading techniques, ensuring you’ll get an absolutely perfect match for the shade of your natural teeth. Additionally, just like traditional porcelain crowns, your gums need to be healthy before you can receive same day crowns; if you’re suffering from gum disease, you may need to undergo treatment for it before you can get any type of crown.

9. They require the same maintenance as traditional porcelain crowns.

When you get a crown, whether it’s a same day crown or a lab-milled crown, you don’t have to worry about adding extra steps to your oral hygiene routine. Same day crowns require the same level of maintenance as traditional porcelain crowns and natural teeth do: a dedicated oral hygiene routine. Even with a crown capping it, your tooth is still vulnerable to periodontal disease, so you should protect your oral health by brushing your teeth for two minutes every day, flossing and using mouthwash at least once a day, and visiting your dentist every six months.

10. They cost about the same as traditional porcelain crowns.

Although the cutting-edge technology may sound like it would drive up the cost of same day crowns, they’re often about the same price as traditional porcelain crowns because they save you and your dentist money in other areas. Same day crowns eliminate the need for your dentist to make you a temporary crown or send your dental impressions to an outside lab, which saves them on the costs and materials of doing so. They also save you any copay you might have to pay for additional appointments at our office. Since dentists do have to recoup the cost of buying and maintaining the equipment involved in milling same day crowns, this often adds a little cost back into your total—but it usually winds up making the cost of the two types of crowns about equal.

While getting a dental crown is never a thrilling experience, the technology used in single visit crowns makes the experience faster, more comfortable, and more convenient than ever—all without sacrificing quality or appearance. If you’re interested in learning more about single visit crowns and whether they’re a good fit for you, feel free to call our office and schedule a consultation with Dr. Matz or Dr. Ellingson at any time.

Travis Kelce Stops by Go-to Pizza Spot During Cleveland Visit — Find Out What Slices He Ordered!

The retro-inspired restaurant, Geraci’s Slice Shop, joked, "Next time bring Taylor"

Travis Kelce is a man of many titles: three-time Super Bowl champion, Taylor Swift ’s boyfriend and — perhaps, most importantly — pizza connoisseur.

While visiting his home state of Ohio on Saturday, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, who grew up in Cleveland suburb Westlake, made sure to stop by one of his favorite restaurants for some fresh slices.

The NFL star, 34, popped by Geraci’s Slice Shop , a retro-inspired spot in downtown Cleveland, where he opted for a classic slice, as well as one with a bit more spice.

According to a manager who was working when he stopped in, Kelce ordered both a pepperoni slice and the restaurant’s popular “Hot Tito” slice, a pepperoni and sausage slice drizzled with hot honey.

Stacy Revere/Getty Images

During his visit, Travis was dressed “kind of inconspicuous” — he wore sunglasses, a baseball cap and sweatshirt — and kept a low-key profile, the manager tells PEOPLE.

“He was just here with a few of his buddies, but nobody in-house really recognized him,” they add.

Still, the shop’s owner recognized him and snapped a photo of the athlete for Geraci’s Instagram account.

In the shot, Travis smiled and posed in front of one of the shop’s several neon signs, which reads, “Talk pizza to me.”

In the caption, the restaurant joked that during his next visit, the star should bring along girlfriend Swift, 34, for a slice of her own.

“When NFL star and Heights legend @killatrav swings by Geraci’s Slice Shop, you know it’s going to be a touchdown-worthy slice!” the caption reads. “Next time bring Taylor 😉 🏈🍕.”

Kelce previously shared his fondness for Geraci’s during an episode of New Heights , his podcast with brother Jason Kelce .

While the brothers discussed some of their favorite Cleveland spots last December, the Chiefs star shouted out the restaurant.

"Geraci’s Pizza is also a very good spot hidden over in University Heights,” he said.

At the time, the restaurant shared the clip on Instagram, writing, “Travis knows what’s up!”

TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako on Friday visited towns in the north-central region of Noto to pray for victims of the deadly New Year’s Day earthquake and console thousands of homeless living in evacuation centers.

The magnitude 7.6 quake killed 241 people. Four are still missing. More than 9,000 residents whose homes were destroyed or damaged are still living in evacuation facilities such as community centers and school gymnasiums.

Reconstruction has come slowly in a largely rural area with an aging population. The region is known for Wajima lacquerware and other handicrafts.

Hundreds of people lined the streets to cheer the imperial couple and held up their phones to take photos of them waving back from the window of a bus.

Naruhito and Masako had not visited earlier because they did not want to interfere with the immediate relief and reconstruction efforts, officials said.

In Wajima city, where 102 people were killed, the royal couple were escorted by Mayor Shigeru Sakaguchi on a visit to more than 100 people still taking refuge inside a community center.

The couple knelt on the floor — a gesture started by his parents to get closer to the people — and talked to the residents, asking about their health and other difficulties.

They also stopped by the burned down ruins of a popular morning market, where 10 people perished. The couple bowed deeply and prayed in silence.

Sakaguchi said their warm words inspired him and the residents to keep up the reconstruction work despite slow progress.

The couple also visited evacuees in a gym in the town of Suzu.

College tour season is about to kick off. Here are 10 tips from college tour guides to have a successful campus visit.

  • As spring starts, colleges nationwide will welcome parents and students to tour their campuses.
  • College tour guides want people to arrive on time, ask the right questions, and have fun.
  • They also recommend students take the tours on their own, without their parents.

Insider Today

Spring break is right around the corner, and for many high-school students and their parents, that means many will be hitting the road to tour colleges around the country.

To make the most of your visit, Business Insider spoke with college students and tour guides. They know the campuses like the backs of their hands, and they know how to walk backward.

Here are the dos and don'ts of college tours from student guides .

1. Get there with no time to spare, but don't be late.

You won't get points for arriving early, so try to arrive on time. But if you do happen to arrive late , there's no need to worry.

"If something comes up and you are late, ask your guide what you missed once the tour finishes," Skyler Kawecki-Muonio, a senior at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, told BI. "They will happily fill you in."

2. Dress to impress, but don't sacrifice comfort.

It's important to look nice, but you don't have to don a jacket and tie. Tour-goers should put their best foot forward with a sturdy pair of walking shoes , and don't forget to dress for the weather.

"At Fairleigh Dickinson, tours go out rain or shine, so make sure to wear clothes that will keep you warm," Emily Bone, a junior at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, said .

3. Don't forget to sign in, but skip the résumé .

Most schools have a check-in desk where you'll receive a campus map and other literature. But don't bother furnishing schools with your portfolio.

"Students can leave their résumés at home," Henry Millar, a senior at the College of William & Mary in Virginia, said. "Tour guides generally do not have any sway in the admissions process whatsoever, so feel free to save the paper."

4. Pay attention on the tour, but do it solo if possible.

Some schools offer to let parents and kids take separate tours, which has advantages.

"Get excited about your child's potential future in college, but give them some space to see what they think of that school on their own," Nathan Weisbrod, a junior at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, told BI.

Related stories

Students can comfortably ask questions without a parent present and compare notes afterward .

5. Ask all your questions, but avoid personal interrogations.

This is the time to inquire about any aspect of campus life , and don't feel shy about speaking up.

"Tour guides love getting questions because it allows us to cater the tour, especially in small groups, toward the needs and interests of the families on that specific tour," Halle Spataro, a senior at Bucknell University, said.

But some topics are off-limits, so don't ask your tour guide about their SAT scores , ACT scores , or what they wrote about in their essay .

6. Speak up, but let the student take the lead.

Parents may be tempted to raise their hands again and again, but this tour is about the student, so there should be space to let them shine.

"Try to take the back seat — or the passenger seat — but refrain from driving all of your child's interactions," Julian Jacklin, a junior at Reed College in Oregon, said. "Students who feel they can own that experience usually ask the most questions and engage with the tour more."

7. Say thanks, but don't leave with questions unanswered.

Maybe your guide didn't hear you, or your kid was reluctant to speak up. You can still get the information you want before leaving.

"There's a lot of information students are getting that day and a lot of excitement with being in a new place, which can make people forget to ask certain questions," Lorenzo Mars, a junior at Pepperdine University in California, said.

Therefore, get your tour guide's email address so that you can follow up .

8. You may know exactly what school is right but keep an open mind.

Don't be surprised if a city-living kid is suddenly intrigued by a small-town setting.

"The college search and college experience are all about getting to know yourself better and growing, so on a tour, students have to trust themselves and their judgment of the 'world' they've just stepped into," Thomas Elias, a senior at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, said .

9. Take in as much as possible, but remember to have fun.

Sure, preparing for the next four years can be scary and stressful. But it's also an exciting milestone, so enjoy the ride.

"These tours serve as great opportunities to learn more about colleges — along with their cities, culture, and people," Connor Gee, a sophomore at the University of Mississippi, said. "Have fun with it!"

10. Weigh the pros and cons of the school, but don't stop there.

Your tour may be over, but you can still learn other ways to immerse yourself in college life .

"See if the school offers additional experiences, like eating in the cafeteria or attending a class," Emily Balda, a senior at Seton Hall University in New Jersey, said. "Consider it 'food for thought.'"

A new type of bacteria was found in 50% of colon cancers. Many were aggressive cases.

A type of bacteria that causes dental plaque may be behind a treatment-resistant form of colorectal cancer, a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature found.

Doctor holding a colon anatomy model for study

The particular bacterium, which appears to shield tumor cells from cancer-fighting drugs, was found in 50% of the tumors tested in the study. The discovery, experts say, could pave the way for new treatments and possibly new methods of screening.

Colon cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States and is expected to kill more than 53,000 people in the nation in 2024, according to the American Cancer Society .

Rates are rising sharply among younger people: The percentage of people younger than 55 diagnosed with colon cancer almost doubled between 1995 and 2019, leaping from 11% to 20% of cases. What’s more, these cases are often diagnosed at later, more aggressive stages .

Experts are still struggling to explain the shift.

“Colorectal cancer is very treatable when caught early, but the cases in younger people are increasing and we don’t know why,” said Dr. Flavio Rocha, a surgical oncologist and physician in chief at the Oregon Health & Science University’s Knight Cancer Institute, who was not involved in the study.

The new research doesn’t answer that question; it’s far too early to implicate this bacteria in the rise in cases in younger people . What’s more, most of the patients in the study were over the age of 50.

But the findings raise “the question as to whether there are elevated levels of this bacterium in young onset colorectal cancer which is on the rise globally for unknown reasons,” said co-lead study author Susan Bullman, an assistant professor of human biology at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle.

Bacteria with a secret

Scientists have suspected a link between the bacteria, called Fusobacterium nucleatum, and colorectal cancer growth for almost a decade. The bacteria is usually only found in the mouth, far from the colon.

In the mouth, it’s one of the most common types of disease-causing bacteria , linked to gum disease and plaque buildup. But it was unclear how it could withstand the journey through the gut and eventually invade tumor cells in places in the body where these types of bacteria usually don’t survive.

In the study, Bullman and her colleagues looked at the bacterial makeup of almost 200 colorectal tumors, as well as stool samples from more than 1,200 people, half of whom did not have cancer.

What they learned was that the bacteria was a bit more complicated than once thought. Namely, it has two distinct subspecies, one of which appears to shield colorectal tumors from cancer-fighting drugs.

“It acts like a cloak,” Bullman said.

Normally, immune cells called T-cells recognize and attack tumor cells. But this bacteria recruits another type of immune cell into the cancer cells, one that lets them escape the T-cells.

The stealthy subspecies was present in 50% of the colorectal tumors collected in the study. The corresponding stool samples also had elevated amounts of the subspecies, compared to their healthy counterparts.

“Patients who have high levels of this bacteria in their colorectal tumors have a far worse prognosis ,” Bullman said. “They don’t respond as well to chemotherapy and they have an increased risk of recurrence.”

The subspecies may also cause cancer to form in the first place.

When Bullman and her team transplanted the subspecies to mice, they appeared to cause precancerous polyps to form, one of the first warning signs of colorectal cancer, though she added that this causation hasn’t yet been proven in humans.

The researchers also found clues that may answer the question as to how Fusobacterium nucleatum can get to the colon in the first place: The bacterium appears to be able to survive the journey through the stomach, withstanding what scientists previously thought would be a toxic dose of stomach acid.

New targets for treatment

The discovery of the subspecies has huge consequences for targeted therapies that are already underway, said Dr. Michael White, an assistant professor of colorectal surgery at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

“There is evidence that if you clear these bacteria, there is more response during treatment,” said White, who was not involved with the new research. Clinical trials are slated to soon test whether treating a patient with antibiotics prior to chemotherapy will induce a better response, he said.

Knowing more about which bacterial subspecies, including Fusobacterium nucleatum, are dangerous will allow for a more targeted approach, he said.

That could potentially include prevention.

It’s possible that scientists could identify the subspecies while it’s still in the mouth and give a person antibiotics at that point, wiping it out before it could  travel  to the colon, Bullman said. Even if antibiotics can’t successfully eliminate the bacteria from the mouth, its presence there could serve as an indication that someone is at higher risk for aggressive colon cancer, she added.

Rocha agreed. In the future, part of colorectal cancer screening could be as simple as a mouth swab, he said.

Understanding the newly identified subspecies could also lead to the development of new antibiotics that would specifically target this bacterial subtype, rather than wiping out both forms of the bacteria or all of the bacteria in the mouth.

There’s also the possibility of harnessing the bacteria to do the cancer-fighting work.

The subtype has already proven that it can enter cancer cells quite easily, so it might be possible to genetically modify the bacteria to carry cancer-fighting drugs directly into the tumors, Bullman said.

Researchers are just beginning to scratch the surface of the ways a person’s microbiome plays a role in the individual’s cancer risk, Rocha said, but it’s one of the most important concepts being explored in cancer research today.

Title: dupl: dual student with trustworthy progressive learning for robust weakly supervised semantic segmentation.

Abstract: Recently, One-stage Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation (WSSS) with image-level labels has gained increasing interest due to simplification over its cumbersome multi-stage counterpart. Limited by the inherent ambiguity of Class Activation Map (CAM), we observe that one-stage pipelines often encounter confirmation bias caused by incorrect CAM pseudo-labels, impairing their final segmentation performance. Although recent works discard many unreliable pseudo-labels to implicitly alleviate this issue, they fail to exploit sufficient supervision for their models. To this end, we propose a dual student framework with trustworthy progressive learning (DuPL). Specifically, we propose a dual student network with a discrepancy loss to yield diverse CAMs for each sub-net. The two sub-nets generate supervision for each other, mitigating the confirmation bias caused by learning their own incorrect pseudo-labels. In this process, we progressively introduce more trustworthy pseudo-labels to be involved in the supervision through dynamic threshold adjustment with an adaptive noise filtering strategy. Moreover, we believe that every pixel, even discarded from supervision due to its unreliability, is important for WSSS. Thus, we develop consistency regularization on these discarded regions, providing supervision of every pixel. Experiment results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed DuPL over the recent state-of-the-art alternatives on PASCAL VOC 2012 and MS COCO datasets. Code is available at this https URL .

Sama k němu chodím už 5 let a nedokáži si představit lepší péči.

Initially I was very afraid. But afterwards, I am very happy. Especially, I was amazed by the work of doctor Petr Hajny. He has high culture of work and touch. Teeth are very beautiful. I am very thankful. Good luck to you!
