Digital Tour Bus

Digital Tour Bus

In this Tour Tips segment, Pär Sundström and Joakim Brodén of the metal band, Sabaton, give you their tips for being on tour. You can check out the feature, after the break.

1. Pack light! I don’t know how many laps around our planet I’ve lugged stuff around in my bags that I very rarely used if even used at all. If you don’t know that you’re gonna need something for sure, leave it at home. The things that “might be useful, would be nice to have” etc are only gonna make your back ache as you’re carrying it in and out of tour buses and hotels.
2. Remember why you’re there in the first place The show is what’s important, there will be time enough time to drink, party and do stupid shit on a tour without compromising the show by getting drunk before, or during the show. Not that I mind a good drink or doing the stupid things (some of my best memories from over a decade of touring falls into this category [laughs]), but not to the extent that the show is affected
3. Be on time Respect everyone else by being on time for soundchecks, bus call or lobby calls etc. Why would your sleep/personal time be worth more than anyone else’s?
4. See something, do something Make sure you get out of the hotel, the venue or the tour bus whenever you can. Being on tour can be hell or a wonderful thing depending on what you do with it. Stay inside and you’ll end up in a tour bubble being miserable, tired and probably drinking yourself to sleep. I’ve made that mistake several times and it’s not a good place to be. Get out there, take a walk in the city, visit a theme park, visit a museum, go swimming or go for a run, anything… just get the fuck away from things and make sure you don’t miss the world happening around you!
5. Have fun! Sounds obvious, but it’s very easy to forget when things are getting crazy busy with the band/career/family etc. Remember why you started doing this in the first place, being on tour is like being on a roller coaster, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, very high highs, and very low lows. Get used to it and enjoy the ride. ;)

The tour comes in support of the band's The War to End All Wars album, which just debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Current Rock Albums and Current Hard Music Albums charts. Additional, the album grabbed the No. 1 spot in Germany and Sweden and was No. 2 in Norway and on the U.K. Rock & Metal Chart.

“With our last album, The Great War , we found that we had only scratched the surface in terms of the powerful stories of courage and bravery and also the horrors that took place during the first World War," says Broden. "Fans would contact us and tell us these amazing stories from World War One that none of us had ever heard of before. Incredible stories about everyday people who were willing to give their lives for something bigger than themselves. These were stories of a frightening and liberating time in history that had to be told.”

sabaton tour bus

Review by Gary Spiller for MPM

It’s been a while coming to actual fruition for ‘ The Tour To End All Tours, but the time has now arrived for the prodigious bulk of Swedish power metallers Sabaton to land in town.

Their particular cathedral of heavy metal has constructed its altar within the cavernous environs of the Cardiff International Arena. Queues of eager, devoted fans snake about the city streets of Caerdydd hours ahead of doors awaiting their opportunity to worship.

It’s a sold-out gig and with 7,500 in the assembled ranks there’s a tangible buzz in this corner of the Welsh capital. Justifiably so as Sabaton have ensured an entire evening of spectacle with a canny choice of support acts. They’ve brought the might of fellow Scandinavians Lordi to the arena alongside the Asian polished dance metal delights of Babymetal. This is, make no bones about it, a triple-billing that bears the hallmark of an industrious quality.

A bell dolefully chimes, metal striking upon metal, as the mountaintop halls send out their darkened call. Rampant helldogs descend from the moorland lairs. Leaving their granitic homelands behind them they swoop in for the kill with fire emanating from their flared nostrils. Their overlord Mr. Lordi strides forth, a character larger than life itself with his four lieutenants about him. Legendary Finnish shock heavy metal force Lordi have landed, no prisoners will be taken. This will be a death or glory moment.

sabaton tour bus

The 2006 Eurovision winners are rapidly into their pounding parade kicking off with the latest single, and album opener, ‘Dead Again Jayne’ rocking to the very core. Hella’s harem scarem keys skitter hither and tither before the combined forces of drummer Mana, bassist Hiisi and axeman Kone flood over the precipice. Mr. Lordi, the bastard offspring of the Duke of Demons and Angel the Troll, unleashes his supernatural strengths, necromancy afoot. Clawed hands stretch skywards.

sabaton tour bus

There’s tribute to Kiss, Twisted Sister, Alice Cooper, and their kin but this is undeniably a new tack. The anthemic banquet of their first ever single ‘Would You Love A Monsterman?’ possesses a biomechanical vehemence and more hook than an entire decade’s subscription to the Angling Times. Out front Mr. Lordi is an engaging, charismatic presence. “So, you decided to spend your Sunday with Swedish metal and Japanese rock, but you got us for forty minutes” he quips in self-deprecation. Judging by the approving roars, just two tracks in, all gathered herein are more than content.

The predator’s fury is set loose as the ranks offensively break forth. The living doll Hella’s keys swirl enhancing the kinetic of ‘Thing In The Cage’ that is driven by the six-string precision of Kone. Under the incantation’s scripture the scene reddens in bloodlust hues ahead of the infectious roar of ‘Blood Red Sandman.’ Raising his horns Mr. Lordi howls an Ozzy-like soul-curdling scream.

sabaton tour bus

Fists punch the air, and the assembled horde sings along entranced under the wizardry, the overlord is moved. “Aww you are way too kind” he dismisses before enquiring as to the crowd’s wellbeing. Completing a 1-2-3 trading between new and old ‘Lucyfer Prime Evil’ – off the very recently released ‘Screem Writers Guild’ – precedes, most aptly, the bone-white rocking of ‘Devil Is a Loser.’ Stone gargoyles, on the granular wing, cackle in satanic timbre as bloody teeth are bared in the moonlight of the killed. Lordi are setting a high bar with a skeletal army ready to strike, curved swords strike demonic metallic shields afore the battle to commence.

“Back to the 2006 album, we’ll play that one but not just yet” Mr. Lordi playfully teases the maxed-out arena. The Arockalypse is upon us as Lordi ask ‘Who’s Your Daddy?’ Completely under the metalliferous conjuration the crowd, emboldened by the powerage, chant “Daddy” atop the fiery undercurrent of Cooper and Kiss. Contagion levels threaten to go through the roof as the keyed intro of ‘Hard Rock Hallelujah’ elicits a thundering roar.

sabaton tour bus

The rock’s about to roll as the moon rises, demons and angels as one land. The assembled generate an electricity that surges as Lordi raises a double headed battle axe to bring down the metaphorical curtain. To profound effect the horror of King and Herbert has been alloyed in dramatic fashion with the high fantasy of Tolkien and Pratchett with a good dash of the latter’s larger than life humour.

In their first batch of international shows for over three years kawaii metal act Babymetal bring their fusion of heavy metal and Japanese idol genres to Cardiff. Their band, identities hidden behind their cult-like masks, assemble quietly upon the darkened stage as an ecclesiastical-esque intro reverberates about the cloisters. A Churchillian monologue pervades the darkness.

With a burst of red backlighting the drummer bursts into an expeditious beat, deftly joined by the guitarist who more than equals the machine gun percussive forces. The crowd chant as they greet their beloved trio of lead singers who comprise the nucleus of the group. Lead singer Su-metal takes to the centre with her compatriots Moametal and Mumometal to her flanks. ‘Babymetal Death’ – off the eponymous debut album – sets the tone. The band, totally anonymous, are the hard-hitting backdrop for the slick choreography afront.

The fans out in the arena clearly love it, chanting each letter of the band’s name in absolute rapture but under the lifeblood red lighting I’m left a touch bewildered. It’s an alloying of styles that is, to me, somewhat alien. Clearly a generational matter as the younger elements of the arena rage in a glorious fury during the freneticism of ‘Megitsune.’ Metal is evolving and this is right there up front and centre of the maelstrom.

‘Pa Pa Ya’ is infectious to the point of face-melting whilst the coupling of the bouncing ‘Metalizm’ and the stand-out ethereal ‘Monochrome’ constructs the set upwards to a blinding crescendo. The latter sees phone lights abound about the CIA, a stirring sight.

A spacecraft descends to earth, its occupants demanding cocoa-based confectionery to a rapid-fire despatch. ‘Gimme Chocolate’ pleases in all quarters whilst the blues-fringed saccharine-fuelled metal of ‘Road Of Resistance’ is faster than the bullet from the gun. With high-kicking dancing wrapping up kinetically enthused 40 minutes that goes down an absolute storm with the overwhelming majority of the CIA crowd.

It’s evident that the ranks of Babymetal fans, to their absolute credit, are fiercely loyal in their adoration and support of their band, rightfully so. This is the sunrise of a brand-new day in terms of musical crossovers which is to be commended but their set has taken myself well beyond the boundaries of my comfort zone. I’ve been challenged here this evening and the ball is now firmly on my side of the court. Babymetal have delivered.

Branded ‘The Tour To End All Tours’ this moment has been over two decades in the coming for Swedish titans Sabaton . It’s been an ever-ascending journey for these ground-breaking power metal exponents who hail from the copper town of Falun. Multiple Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards and nominations for the Swedish equivalent of the Grammys along with the charting success of 2019’s ‘The Great War’ and its partner ‘The War To End All Wars’, from last year, bears an abiding testament to their continuing rise.

For the third consecutive date the opening pyrotechnical blast ‘appears’ to go awry. There’s a frantic scurrying of tech staff and the scene is set with the stage darkening once more and the intro – “Sun Tzu Says the art of war is of vital importance to the State” – sets the scene perfectly. If the first barrage was impressive then the second, to which Sabaton storm forwards, is eye-wateringly and ear-shatteringly detonative, smoke bombs add further to the spectacle. Surely that was felt in Swansea and Newport, a truly seismic event.

Blink and you’re guaranteed to miss something on-stage; the lighting rig is on overtime and the PA is driven to the max. Sabaton hit the stage, metaphorical hooves thundering and sparking, at full pelt delivering the rousing ‘Ghost Division.’ Rommel’s Panzer Elite roll as powerhouse frontman Joakim Broden, centre-stage, is joined by bassist Par Sundstrom and six-stringers Chris Rorland and Tommy Johansson to rally the CIA ensemble. Drummer Hannes Van Dahl is seemingly unphased as the tank, upon which he and his kit sit atop, fires a salvo as the stage erupts.

Sabaton, a keen eye upon history, continue their examination of WWII from the Axis perspective with the 50,000 tons of steel that comprised the bulk of the ‘Bismarck’ – once the pride of the Kriegsmarine – despatched to devasting effect. Broden loses his place momentarily, distracted as Sundstrom and Rorland proceed to stick confetti to his forehead. Chuckling the vocalist regains his composure as all around flames erupt as Sabaton do their level best to toast one and all.

It’s a relentless metallic tableau, bells mournfully toll their Hemingway-esque warning as the twin guitars appear atop platforms either side of the stage for pounding punch of ‘The Last Stand’ – a relating of the heroic backs-to-the-walls efforts of the Swiss Guard during the Sack Of Rome in 1527.

Broden appears awestruck “Wow what a welcome on a Sunday!” jokingly adding “You must have been exhausted being in church all day!” The sheer pace and precision of ‘Into The Fire,’ exploring the horrors of the usage of napalm in the Vietnam conflict, quite literally turns up the thermals.

Cumulonimbus clouds, clustered along a squall line, herald ‘Carolus Rex.’ “Alright let’s test your Swedish!” challenges Broden. Exuding nationalistic pride Sabaton virtuously despatch a metallic tribute to the 5 th King of the Swedish Empire. Most appropriately the arched tour title is lit in alternating yellow and blue.

The opening segment of the set draws to a close, unnoticed by most, by the cavalry charge of ‘Winged Hussars’ brandishing a touch of Iron Maiden melded with Steve Vai. The remainder of the main body turns its attention towards WW1 – the salient subject matter of the band’s latest two albums. As a shadowy figure fires a pistol so we’re jerked back to 1914 and the declaration of war that followed the assignation of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. ‘Sarajevo’ resounds before the Imperial ‘Stormtroopers’ march offensively. Atop the watch towers shock troops scorch all before them with their potent flamethrowers, the brutality of war never diminishes.

Released, as a single to celebrate the ‘Stories From The Western Front EP, Sabaton’s emotively charged rendition of Motorhead’s ‘1916’ brings the roof down; there’s a rumour bouncing about the arena that long-standing Motorhead guitarist is in tonight. If he is, and I suspect he is, then he’ll approve wholeheartedly as Johansson nails the solo whilst Van Dahl and Sundstrom, all the while, lay down a fearsome rhythm.

A chill suddenly descends as snow begins to blow, high from the mountain peaks ‘Soldier Of Heaven’ brings forth the depths of the raging blizzard in glorious technicolour with an uprising chorus. With flames emanating from the tank, and about the stage, the broadside of ‘Dreadnought’ inflicts a mighty strength from within. A lone sailor salutes as blues-inflicted fretwork from Johannson launches horizonward.

For ‘The Red Baron’ the keys are housed in a distinctive red Fokker triplane; swooping and rolling with a deadly strike Sabaton wreak trademark intensity upon the sold-out CIA. The abominable abhorrence of poison gas is explored in the swirling clouds of ‘Father’ and ‘The Attack of the Dead Men.’ The former a dark exploration of the contradictions of Fritz Haber – a Nobel Prize winner for his invention of the Haber-Bosch process but also considered the ‘father of chemical warfare.’ Thought provoking matter as a white coated scientist leads a team wheeling out the laboratory equipment.

sabaton tour bus

Donning gas masks Sabaton emerge from the murky effluvium for ‘The Attack of the Dead Men’ – a narration of the abominable suffering of the Russian defenders at Osowiec Fortress who were attacked by German forces utilising chlorine and bromine. As the snow falls, once more, so the heinous acts of war are balanced with the telling of ‘Christmas Truce’ introduced by Sundstrom who relates to playing in front of just 24 people in TJ’s, Newport before gathering the arena to partake with this stunning set closer. Mobile phones spectacularly light up the arena in serene respect.

sabaton tour bus

After an hour and a quarter more action packed than a Hollywood blockbuster Sabaton take the deserved roar of 7,500 souls rammed into the CIA before slipping off stage to gather their collective senses. This has been theatrical heavy metal production of the highest order, but Sabaton are not finished just yet.

sabaton tour bus

Regaining the stage just a couple of minutes later the quintet explosively power into the frenetic fury of the titular ‘Primo Victoria’ before letting loose rampaging ‘Swedish Pagans.’ Band and crowd, alike unified as one, as the encore builds to the finale to end all finales with ‘To Hell and Back.’ In front of me a young child is taken to his father’s shoulders under the magic spell of awe, the very epitome of rock n’ roll as he clenches his fist and triumphantly punches the air.

sabaton tour bus

It’s been a spectacular evening with three bands of widely varying sounds and different nationalities but with one common thread; that of further enhancing their mellifluous output with a dramaturgic magnification. For those of a cynical disposition this can be easily dismissed as gimmickry to bolster a weak product. However, in the humblest of my opinions, this couldn’t be further from the actual truth. What we have witnessed this evening – whether it be wondrous costumes, super-polished choreography, or sheer aptitude in stage props – is the elevation of quality music to a Broadway or West End scale. Mountains are scaled and the flag of success is nailed to the peak.

Sabaton “The Tour To End All Tours” (Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam) – 03/05/2023

sabaton tour bus

Not just headlining  Graspop , but headlining it as a finishing act. Being the sub headliner for Metallica  at  Hellfest . These are just some recent ‘feat of arms’ Sabaton achieved in the past year. But are they satisfied? Hell no! With this  Tour To End All Tours, they look to surpass all previous acts and launch their biggest shows yet. GRIMM could not miss this party, and we already went ahead of the Antwerp show to see what our Sabaton  friends were up to and what we could expect. And yes, they did it, 15,000 Dutchmen in one arena, singing and jumping all together on all the goodness Sabaton  has to offer. However, I am sure Belgium will rise to the task, even surpassing this heroic performance.

Sabaton  did not undertake this task by themselves, to be sure. The first band to assist them was Lordi. It goes without saying that this band could easily headline themselves, as most people will still remember them winning the Eurovision Song Festival  of 2006 (yes, dear friends, that is already getting close to 2 decades ago, you are all getting old).

Given the performance these guys are still able to bring to the stage, it is strange to reminisce that this heavy rock / heavy metal band was birthed back in 1992. Nonetheless, they do what they do best. Produce a mean heavy metal sound with some great musicianship (see our video) while parodying metal as a whole. And I just love that. Because by comically exaggerating what metal is, they define it and become a sort of ambassadors of our community to the rest of the world.

This sense of self reflection also marks the band itself. They know bloody well – with Mr. Lordi mentioning it several times – that they are there to warm people up for Sabaton  and they do that so wonderfully well. This is just great entertainment, great music and great theatre.

BABYMETAL is a ‘Kawaii metal band’. What is that? Well, in my opinion it is not really a separate subgenre as there is far too little bands that would fall under this title. But you could call it modern Japanese folk metal. Bear with me here! Think about the things that make modern Japanese culture, think Manga, think Anime, think these typical electro melodies that go along with all that. You have that in your mind? Now put a metal riff, drum, and base on that. That is what Kawaii metal is, and that is what BABYMETAL is.

So, if you are new to it, and you are going to look them up. You will get this feeling yet again, “what the f*ck”. Honesty be told, I know this band for quite some years but now seeing them live for the first time I was yet again caught with the same feeling: “what the f*ck”. Do not get me wrong, I do not mean that in any bad way, to the contrary – even though there is a feeling whether 15,000 grown-ups should enjoy the image of ‘school girls’ jumping around on a stage (again something very Japanese).

Let me be clear though, I was really glad to see them live and also to be able to witness some other songs than the famous Road of Resistance  or Gimme Chocolate (see video). The thing with  BABYMETAL is that even though it is through and through modern, just like modern Japanese culture as a whole, it floats on a deep ocean of traditional elements. The dancing with the specific hand movements and tight choreography, the masks of the musicians, even the composition in many ways, all have deep roots in the Japanese identity.

And I am not speaking yet about the amazing musicianship. There is really not just some metal talent there, but also the ability to take traditional elements as well as modern electro melodies and fuse them with good metal riffs. Particularly the leading guitar was really impressive.

I therefore strongly suggest to look beyond the girlish songs and listen to the entire discography of this band and – even better – go see them live. It is worth it!

And then it is time for the big one: Sabaton.  I am going to be honest here, I saw these guys on  Graspop  and a week later on  Hellfest , and that was not too early for me, not even in the least. In fact, the entire reason I went to  Sabaton  and did the interview with Tommy Johansson, was to get my yearly dose of the band. In short, I love Sabaton,  a band I am listening to since 2006 or 2007. So yes, I am one of these early days Belgian fans. But what would you expect? I am a metalhead and a historian! Nonetheless, I will try to retain a critical attitude, and it does give me the advantage of comparing this show in an arena filled with Dutchmen to the festival experiences of last year.

So to answer the most urgent question, how was the show? Well, just amazing! Particularly for die hard fans, as they chose for this ‘extra show’ after the festival season to make some set-list changes and also include some older and less played songs in the first part of the show. I am talking about songs such as Into the Fire and one of my favourites The winged hussars  (I have been driving around Poland for a month with this song constantly playing).

Another important reason for the success of this show was beyond any doubt the audience. Netherlands, you were amazing, no kidding, just amazing. Just look at the video when the band plays  Stormtroopers,  you hear the audience, that is 15,000 women and men, singing along, sometimes even overpowering the sound system. And I am not just talking bout the chorus, they sang the entire f*cking song, and do mind that this is one of the new album. So imagine what they did on a Ghost Division, Carolus Rex  or  Primo Victoria  (and sorry I could not film those as I was jumping and singing with the many friends I made that evening).

Even  Joakim Bröden (lead vocals) confessed he was impressed by the energy of the Dutch crowd. Those responded to the compliment in a way only the Dutch can by shouting: “broek af, op je hoofd” (for our foreign friends, look it up!) and repeating this motto throughout the entire concert. The poor Swedes stood perplexed but not surprised as this was not the first encounter with our Northern neighbours.

The concert certainly had quite some energy, which was fuelled by the interaction of stage and audience. Particularly Tommy Johannson (leading guitar) and  Chris Rörland  (rhythmic guitar) were full of energy from the start. As usual, Sabaton ‘s traditional opening song  Ghost Division  set the crowd on fire, and on fire we were.

And it was not just energy, but also quite some emotion. As the last albums  Great War  and  The War to end all Wars  deal with the First World War, the band produced songs that carried more load. This is most noticeable in Christmas Truce, a song that moved a lot of people to tears, and they have recently continued that line with their  Möterhead  cover 1916 . Both songs were also part of the setlist and I found myself on both occasions standing arm in arm with new friends as we all understood the depth of the human experience they related, whether it is the touching story of men seeing brothers rather than enemies in the mayhem of war or remembering a generation that has fallen in the muds at the Somme.

Notwithstanding this energy and emotion, there are some small points of critique that need to be noted as well. First, the energy did seem to drop in the beginning of the second half of the concert. This is in part due to the sequence of Father, Attack of the Dead Men  and  Christmas Truce.  Those are all good songs, some of them even fan favourites, but they are also slower and heavier (both in musical and emotional terms). This really slowed down the energy level too much. Having a more up-beat and faster song in there, such as the Unkillable Soldier instead of  Attack of the Dead Men  could have remedied this. Furthermore, both these songs have the typical rhythmic and cadenced vocals.

Second, I did notice that Joakim ‘svocals were often not as powerful as they usually are and at moments – though rarely – they were a little off. He also seemed to have apparent less energy at certain moment. Probably, the heavy touring schedule which this band is now carrying on for two years after putting a lot of work in making their last album will start to wear them down.

Let me be clear, though, I am really nit-picking here because this was still an absolute top show. And the little drop around the half of the set-list was washed away completely when the band hit their ending songs, starting with  Primo Victoria . And damned, really daaaaaamnneeeed! There are YouTube videos, so check it out. The 7,000 people standing in the middle section all jumped on the rhythm of the song while everyone was singing the chorus. What a surge of energy!

Next in this finishing list was the classic  Swedish Pagans which  Tommy  and  Chris  led in a contest where both sides of the arena competed to sing the ‘ooohoooohoooh’ part loudest. Yes, I lost my voice due to these boys’ shenanigans. This set the stage for the traditional finisher of Sabaton  To Hell and Back which ended what indeed was a tour to end all tours.

So, in comparison to the festival shows I saw of last year, this show certainly outdid the  Hellfest  performance simply because that was a rather tough crowd. However, Sabaton  and Belgium have their special relationship, and you feel that. Notwithstanding the amazing energy and enthusiasm of my many Dutch friends in Amsterdam, I have fond memories of the Graspop experience last year. But all of this is not going to be overpowered by the Antwerp show  Sabaton  will soon give in the Sportpaleis Antwerpen and which may be their biggest show to date. Belgium, go for it!

Sabaton  was not just amazing in performance, but they will be amazing soon in Belgium as well at the Sportpaleis May 13th.

Tommy Johannson already talked to us, so to warm-up have a look at our interview at Interview Sabaton – “I know the other guys don’t consider Sabaton power metal, but just listen to Stormtroopers, that song is so power metal” • GRIMM Gent

Recent tour reviews

I attended Sabaton’s concert in the UK in 2023. The concert was amazing. The drummer (Hannes) and guitarists (Tommy, Chris, Pär) are all extremely talented. I also love Joakim’s voice. I think that Sabaton are actually even better in person!

Sabaton are very sweet people who really care about their fans and know how to interact well with their audience. The audience was encouraged to join in on songs like The Red Baron and Swedish Pagans. The talks in between songs by band members were interesting, well-humoured and friendly. They also took feedback from data they had previously collected from fans who wanted them to play older and faster songs so they played Into The Fire.

The showmanship was amazing. There were coloured lights and confetti, fire and smoke and of course the tank that Hannes sits on to play the drums. The screen behind the band made it easier to see the band but also showed cool visualisers for some songs. During some songs there were even people on stage playing some of the people from the songs, for example, there was a guy in a red plane for The Red Baron and a guy playing a scientist (Fritz Haber) for Father. For Christmas Truce everyone turned their phone lights on and it was beautiful.

When they went off the stage, there was still a lot of hype and everyone shouted “SABATON! SABATON!” and their encore was 3 songs but after that Man Of War played through the speakers when Sabaton were done performing. There was also a really amazing breakdown after the performance when they were saying goodnight before Man Of War started playing through the speakers.

Also, Sabaton have earplugs as part of their merch for only £10. They are very high quality and they made the concert not sound too loud but at the same time I could hear everything easily and the audio quality was fantastic. Also, the earplugs are very comfortable. They are also washable and reusable.

I would absolutely love to see Sabaton live again and I would highly recommend their concert for any other fans!

Honestly one of the best shows I've ever been to. Both Sabaton and Hammerfall killed it. Insane energy all night, with a constant pit all night long and crowdsurfers too.

Both bands sounded great live, and played a perfect mix of old and new songs. Venue was pretty solid too. A little old, but the well-sloped floor with great visibility and amazing sound made it all worth it.

Enjoyed every minute of the show. Would definitely go see them again Even got to meet, shake hands, and get photos with Hammerfall for free after the show :)

A great bill with Kreator opening up for Sabaton. And Kreator absolutely killed it. Great live show. The sound was fantastic and the band was tight and on point throughout. The crowd was amped, very fired up from the first note to the last. A violent pit moshed in front of the band in the strong metal venue. Kreator, one of the Teutonic Big 4, are a must see. Great live metal band.

Sabaton isn't really my style of metal, but the crowd loved them and they put on a very strong show. Very interactive with the audience, and there is plenty of fist pumping, clapping along, and singing along to the chorus.

The 2 bands together made for an awesome show.

SABATON Announces Return Of Guitarist THOBBE ENGLUND

Swedish metallers SABATON have been rejoined by guitarist Thobbe Englund . This news comes hot on the heels of Tommy Johansson 's departure announcement less than a month ago.

Thobbe originally joined SABATON in April 2012 and amicably parted ways with the band in July 2016 to focus on his personal life and expand his creativity. Eight years later, he's back and ready to hit the global stage once more. Watch the official announcement video below.

Englund recorded two studio albums with SABATON , namely "Heroes" (2014) and "The Last Stand" (2016),and assisted with the songwriting of some very popular songs including "Shiroyama" and "Fields Of Verdun" , among others.

On his return, which is effective immediately, Englund declares: "Words can't express how ready and how excited I am to jump back into SABATON . It feels like I was on a short holiday. The time is right, love is in the air and the best is yet to come!”

SABATON bassist and band manager Pär Sundström comments: "This is a full-circle moment for SABATON and we are beyond excited to have Thobbe rejoin the band. He's a talented guitarist, songwriter and a kind guy who we have a lot of fun with. We didn't even need to hold auditions with other guitar players. All that was needed was to spend New Year's Eve together to know that the time was right for Thobbe 's return."

Echoing Pär 's sentiments, SABATON frontman Joakim Brodén states: "This decision was a no-brainer for us as a band and for Thobbe . He knows the drill and is the perfect fit. This is a great outcome, and we think everyone is going to be psyched about the news! The time is right. Welcome back, brother!"

Meanwhile, SABATON drummer Hannes Van Dahl adds: "Who? Thobbe f***ng Englund , that's who! The man is back! I'm happy to once again share the stage with one of my best friends! Welcome back, brother!"

And finally, fellow SABATON guitarist Chris Rörland says: "I'm beyond excited and happy for the return of the king! We've had so many good times together, both on stage and off stage. It's gonna be great to share the stage again. Welcome back and welcome home my brother! Love ya!"

SABATON is currently preparing for a 19-show U.S. tour with heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST , which kicks off on April 18 in Wallingford, Connecticut and wraps up on May 22 in Syracuse, New York. The five-piece band is also currently in the studio working on its 11th studio album.

SABATON 2024 is:

Joakim Brodén - vocals Pär Sundström - bass Chris Rörland - guitars Thobbe Englund - guitars Hannes Van Dahl - drums

When Johansson announced his exit from SABATON on January 20, the band said in a statement: "After 7 amazing years in the band, our guitarist, Tommy , has decided to leave SABATON to pursue his own path. We wish him nothing but the best on his journey. We have been a close family and we will continue to support him in the adventures that await him in the future.

" Tommy joined the band in 2016 but he has been a close friend of SABATON ever since our first meeting at the end of a concert in 2005. As a valued member of the band, he has contributed to countless immortal memories.

" Tommy 's departure from SABATON will not be effective immediately. He will stay on to ensure that all goes smoothly with the handover to our next guitarist.

"While a small part of his large heart will always remain within SABATON , we all know that he must follow his dreams.

"Even though we will not wake up daily in the tour bus next to him, we are sure that our paths will cross again many times in the future, both on and off the stage.

"Fly on your wings and strings brother!"

Tommy added in a separate statement: My dear friends! After 7 glorious years of Heavy Metal, I have decided to step down as the guitarist of SABATON .

"This has been the hardest decision I've ever made in my entire life.

"As many of you may know, I do a lot of things outside of SABATON . I play with another band, perform with various artists, and have a career as a singer that I've put aside for years to focus on SABATON . After doing this for seven years, I feel it's time to start following my heart. This means I will no longer tour with my brothers in SABATON and will not meet all you lovely SABATON supporters on the upcoming tours with the band.

"I will never quit playing music. I'll still be touring with MAJESTICA and other projects, but not on the same level as SABATON of course. I am sure I will meet you lovely fans on the road again in the future.

"My brothers in SABATON and the best crew in the world will forever be my second family and I will miss spending time with all these wonderful people. We had so much fun together every day. I've come to learn so much about life, about music and about touring that I wouldn't have learned anywhere else.

"A massive thank you to all you lovely SABATON fans for accepting me as the new guitarist in 2016. I am certain you will accept the person who takes over after me.

"All the best to you all and I'll see you again soon!"

Tommy Johansson is a well-known name, given his role as the longtime guitar player in SABATON . But before he joined the Swedish war machine, he had his own band REINXEED . His touring activities with SABATON slowed down the creative process for REINXEED but the group returned in 2019 — seemingly out of nowhere — with a 10-track album titled "Above The Sky" and a brand new name, MAJESTICA . The album saw Tommy taking on vocal duties, something he last showcased as TWILIGHT FORCE 's stand-in singer throughout autumn of 2017.

SABATON 's follow-up to 2022's "The War To End All Wars" album is tentatively due later this year via Nuclear Blast Records .

SABATON recently released the animated movie "The War To End All Wars" , which tells the stories from the "The War To End All Wars" album. It begins with "Sarajevo" , a song about the assassination of Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand , which sparked World War I. It ends with "Versailles" , about the 1918 Treaty Of Versailles that ended the war. SABATON also has the Sabaton History channel on YouTube , which includes historical looks at World War II, Swedish military history and even the 1995 massacre at Srebrenica, among others.

In September 2022, SABATON announced a new EP trilogy titled "Echoes Of The Great War" . The trilogy features new songs specifically about World War I, coupled with topically related catalog music.

The last EP in the "Echoes Of The Great War" EP trilogy, "Stories From The Western Front" , was made available in April 2023 on all platforms. It features a never-heard-before cover of MOTÖRHEAD 's well-known track "1916" .

SABATON climbed the international charts with its tenth studio album, "The War To End All Wars" , securing No. 1 positions in Germany, Austria, Sweden, Poland, Hungary and Finland. Having achieved the top position for the second time in Germany, Sweden and Finland, the album peaked at No. 1 in Poland, Hungary and Austria for the first time in the band’s career. This and additional outstanding results in other territories have made "The War To End All Wars" SABATON 's most successful album so far.
