The Voyager, and its twin the Dodge Caravan, was redesigned for 2001. Although engine power increased, acceleration remains lackluster and fuel economy unimpressive with the popular 3.3-liter, 180-hp V6. A harsh and unresponsive 2.4-liter, 150-hp four-cylinder, shared with the PT Cruiser, continues as the base engine. Powertrain shortcomings aside, the Voyager rides fairly comfortably, and its handling is secure. The third-row seat is a handy 50/50 split bench that's fairly easy to remove, though not as versatile as some competitors' fold-into-the-floor designs. An entry-level eC model joined the lineup for 2002. Optional power-adjustable pedals were also added.

Chrysler brought back the Voyager in 2020 to split its minivan offering as a lower-cost version of the Pacifica. The Voyager takes over for the L and LX trim levels, which account for about a third of Pacificas sold, thereby offering a more affordable entry into the minivan line. It uses the same 3.6-liter V6 engine as the Pacifica, matched with a nine-speed automatic transmission. That combination delivers good power in the Pacifica, where it returned 21 mpg overall. The Voyager does not offer key advanced safety systems, such as forward collision warning or automatic emergency braking. At least, blind spot warning is optional. 

All Voyagers became Chryslers since the Plymouth brand was phased out. The Chrysler Voyager/Dodge Caravan twins are still competitive. They ride fairly quietly and handle reasonably well. A handy second, left-side sliding door is optional, but power operation isn't offered. The 3.3-liter, 158-hp V6 is the engine to choose. Other engine choices are a 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter V6. The front seats provide decent support. The middle and rear seats are easy to unhitch for maximum cargo room. They're very heavy, but small wheels make them easier to move.

2003 Chrysler Voyager review: Our expert's take

Vehicle Overview Like its posh Town & Country companion, the lower-priced Chrysler Voyager gains optional power-adjustable pedals during the 2003 model year. Three Voyager trim levels were sold in 2002, but the 2003 lineup includes only two versions of the LX: one with a four-cylinder engine and the other with a 3.3-liter V-6. Offered only in short-body form, all Voyagers have front-wheel drive and a four-speed-automatic transmission.

Until 2001, the Voyager wore a Plymouth badge. When that longtime make was discontinued, Chrysler adopted the Voyager name for its less-costly minivan.

Fewer amenities are available in the Voyager than in the Town & Country. The Voyager is closely related not only to the longer, higher-priced Town & Country but also to the popular Dodge Caravan. All DaimlerChrysler minivans were redesigned and enlarged for the 2001 model year.

Exterior The Voyager rides a 113.3-inch wheelbase, measures 189.1 inches long overall and stands 68.9 inches tall. In contrast, the Town & Country minivan is 200.6 inches long overall. Sliding doors on both sides are standard; power sliding doors are not available. The tires are 15-inchers.

Interior Seven occupants fit in the Voyager, which has bench seats for the middle and third rows. Unlike the Honda Odyssey and Mazda MPV, the Voyager lacks a third-row seat that folds into the floor; instead, it may be equipped with an optional 50/50-split third-row bench. Quad Command seating is an option that features second-row buckets instead of a bench seat.

A cassette stereo system is standard, and a CD player is optional. Power windows, locks and mirrors and an electric rear defroster are part of the Popular Equipment Package that is included with V-6 models. Adjustable pedals with a 2.75-inch range are optional.

Under the Hood Voyagers are offered with a choice of two engines, and each mates with a four-speed-automatic transmission. The 2.4-liter dual-overhead-cam four-cylinder engine produces 150 horsepower, while the 3.3-liter V-6 is rated at 180 hp.

Safety The front airbags have multistage inflation. Side-impact airbags and antilock brakes are optional. Seat belt pretensioners for the front seats and child-safety seat tethers for the second and third rows are standard.

Driving Impressions Chrysler and Dodge still produce the minivans to beat. Lively acceleration from a standstill with the 3.3-liter V-6 engine is not quite matched by the Voyager’s passing and merging prowess, but performance is more than adequate. Typical buyers will probably decide that the four-cylinder model lacks sufficient strength.

All DaimlerChrysler minivans handle with a relatively light touch, but not in a disconcerting manner. They feel secure on the highway and are easy to drive, with no unpleasant surprises to mar the experience. The Voyager maneuvers adeptly in urban driving and is confident and capable in difficult spots or bad-weather situations.

Generally, the Voyager is quiet, but wind and road noise can be heard at times. Quality problems of the past appear to have been resolved, and the current minivans seem well constructed and refined. One annoyance is the parking-brake release lever, which is a long reach for the driver.

FUGLY van but lots of space and drives fine

Will get you to point a to b but definitely not the prettiest. oh well for the money it's definitely a car you can drive into the ground

It gets the job done

Not a very flashy car but it will get you from point a to point b. The 3 rows to the van is slightly over the top with with my lifestyle it's a bit too much room but for the most part it isn't god awful with gas mileage. Thankfully.

1999 Voyager 3.3 engine stalling while driving - engine just shuts off

This is a new-to-me Voyager. The stalls don't seem associated with hitting big bumps, accelerating or braking. They can occur when stopped at a light or while driving. I will be driving and when the car dies -- often I won't notice until I go to accelerate or brake. The radio stays on continuously as does the headlight - there is no violent shaking/sputtering/coughing. Just suddenly you have no power steering or brakes. The red oil can light on the dash goes on. When you stop the vehicle and put it in Park, the van will start right up and immediately die again, over and over. The only way that I can get it moving is to immediately rev the engine, and keep it revving while I pop it into drive, then it will stay on, at least for a while. There are no lights coming on on the dash - MIL or CEL To me, it seems like a bad sensor -- not the fuel pump which I originally suspected. Any thoughts about the MAP sensor or Mass Airflow sensor? thanks  

Even though there is no CEL try using a scanner on it just for grins. It might show something. Typical things for your sort of symptom are the Crank sensor or Cam sensor. However, since you can feather the throttle and keep it running, I would suspect a fuel delivery issue and be focused on the fuel pump. If you have over 100k miles on it and the pump has never been changed, it would not be a terrible move to just get it replaced. Otherwise, you can put a fuel pressure gauge on the injector line and measure it.  

Your foot can be off the gas many times while driving. Happening ONLY when your foot is OFF the gas? The Idle Air Control (IAC) circuit jumps at me. It opens an air port downstream of the throttle plate in the throttle body to bypass air past the plate anytime it's closed to maintain idle rpm while slowing and stopping at a stop light or when entering an off ramp, etc. If the idle drops and doesn't recover when you turn on the A/C it's another sign there is a problem in that circuit. The port could be clogged, the IAC valve could be binding or dead, wiring from the PCM could be damaged or the PCM could be on vacation. Many times it's just a clogged port easily remedied by cleaning the throttle body.  

Hi RIP: You make an excellent point about which I was going to clarify. The engine shutoff while driving occurs only when I'm coasting and my foot is off the gas pedal...along with when idling at a stop light. I'll follow up on your recommendations. Thanks !  

EGR valve sticking open can do it as well. Mine did this, never set a code.  

May be a good idea to clean out the throttle body.

Its super easy to do on these vans. Just buy a spray can of throttle body cleaner (less than $10). Get a couple rags and see video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41yFXjibtLY

I had a very similar issue, it ended up being the IAC.  

My van would stall without warning.. no check engine light though or codes. Finally decided to clean my map sensor and the stalling stopped but the check engine light went on.Decided to buy a new map sensor and stalling issues have stopped and check engine light doesn't go on. A bad map sensor will stall your vehicle so try changing that out, it is an easy part to change and runs around 45 dollars. It only took me two years of researching online and changing out various parts to finally figure this might be the problem so I hope this helps.  

Can be tested using a multimeter and hand vacuum pump. Check it hot and cold.  

Some new information from owner: The problem is occurring mostly when the engine isn't fully warmed up. Wasn't a dirty throttle body...that was cleaned obviously by the previous owner. Another mechanic thinks it's the idle control motor, much mounts directly to the underside of the throttle body. Lyonkster, is that what you meant in your post?

The throttle body was already cleaned by previous owner. Replaced the Idle Control Motor and the problem is solved. Had a mechanic do the job for around $250  

Hey All - Recently, a friend of mine just purchased a 2000 Town & Country LXi with the 3.8L motor with approximately 138k on the clock. It appears to have this issue while driving, occasionally it will just shut off while coasting, never when the gas is being applied. I tried cleaning out the throttle body exactly as the video that was posted earlier suggested, but it made no difference. I'm not really sure how to clean the Idle Air Control valve without dismantling the entire intake manifold and removing the throttle body and IAC module, at which point, I should probably just replace it. Is there any way I can better narrow down if the problem is a bad EGR valve, bad IAC motor, or bad MAP sensor. Short of buying and replacing all three of those parts, I'm not really sure what else to do. I'm not getting anything via the key dance, but the van is really hard to start in the morning when it isn't warmed up, once the engine is warm, it starts up fine, though will still randomly shut off- no sputtering though, just like as if someone turned the key.

Well, jee34, I have cleaned my throttle body twice & replaced couple sensors. It runs better, but it still shuts off while slowing or stopped. :angry: I am hoping to get to the culprit soon. :nut: Chrylser1924, please let us know if you discover the issue with yours.

No, since the crank sensor reads the ring on the flexplate. It falls harmlessly into the bellhousing/torque converter area where there is no fluid.

• The first step in diagnosing the knock sensor and knock sensor module is to check all the wires and connections in the system for loose connections, corroded terminals, and damage.
• With the ignition switch on, be sure that 12 volts are being supplied through the fuse to the knock sensor module.
• The noise should cause a change in timing.
• The knock sensor can also be checked by tapping near the sensor and watching for an AC pulse on a DMM or lab scope.
