A Ultimate Guide to African Safaris for Singles

More and more solo travelers are seeking the adventure of exploring Africa on their own. However, African safaris can be pricey, especially for singles who often have to pay a single supplement rate for accommodation. This additional fee can significantly increase the cost of a safari, making it unaffordable for some solo travelers.

Planning ahead is essential for singles looking for affordable African safaris. By booking accommodations in advance and choosing the right season, solo travelers can find more budget-friendly options. It’s also beneficial to work with travel agents who specialize in solo travel, as they can help find accommodations that cater to singles’ needs.

Key Takeaways:

  • Best African safaris for singles offer affordable options.
  • Planning in advance is crucial to secure budget-friendly accommodations.
  • Choosing the right season can lead to more affordable safari experiences.
  • Working with a travel agent experienced in solo travel is beneficial.
  • African safaris provide unique adventures for solo travelers.

What is a Single Supplement for Solo Travelers?

When it comes to solo travel, one aspect that often catches travelers off guard is the single supplement. The single supplement is an additional fee that solo travelers may incur when booking accommodations for their safari. This fee is charged because most safari accommodations are priced for two guests sharing a room or tent.

The single supplement is meant to cover the costs of operating the lodge and paying staff wages. It can vary greatly, ranging from a small percentage to as much as 75% of the per-person rate. For solo travelers, this can make safaris considerably more expensive compared to couples or groups.

It’s important for solo travelers to understand the concept of the single supplement and consider it when planning their budget. By being aware of this additional cost, solo travelers can make informed decisions and explore options that cater specifically to singles, helping them find more affordable safari accommodations.

While the single supplement may add an additional expense to your solo safari, there are ways to mitigate its impact. Working with a travel agent experienced in solo travel can help you find accommodations that cater to singles and minimize the single supplement. Additionally, planning your safari in advance and choosing the right season can also lead to more affordable options. By being proactive and well-informed, you can embark on an unforgettable African safari without breaking the bank.

Safari is a wonderfully rewarding holiday for anyone wanting to travel alone. Whether you want to join a small group of like-minded single travellers in Africa or have a tailor-made safari itinerary planned just for you, there are literally hundreds of possibilities. In fact of all the trips we organise, it’s probably only self-drive itineraries we wouldn’t recommend to a solo traveller.

If you are looking for company when you holiday in Africa then one of the best things to consider is to join a small group, of typically no more than eight people. These safaris operate on frequent departure dates throughout the year and vary in length, style and types of activity.

If group travel doesn’t appeal then we can plan a safari specifically for you. The majority of camps and lodges we use are small and have an atmosphere akin to that of a sociable, informal dinner party.

Travel Tips

  • If you would like to join a ‘set departure’ itinerary then gorilla tracking safaris in Rwanda and Uganda, or walking safaris in Zambia are great options.
  • It’s possible to join a riding safari as a solo traveller, in fact many of our clients do just that.
  • There are some excellent small group trips in Botswana and Tanzania, where single travellers are made very welcome.
  • We spend a lot of time travelling solo ourselves so are well placed to advise on this style of safari.
  • The inclusive atmosphere at small safari camps means Africa is a great destination for single travellers.

The idea of travelling to Africa on your own can be very daunting! All our safari adventures are small group trips which offer a friendly and safe way for single travellers to visit Africa. Exploring Namibia, Botswana or Zambia with a small group allows you to enjoy your holiday in the company of like minded African enthusiasts. Tailor-made holidays staying at lodges and safari camps often incur expensive single-person supplements making your trip much more than that of someone travelling with a partner. Many of our adventures have very low or no single-person supplements at all, making these very economic options for solo travellers. Others offer the opportunity to have the single supplement waived if you are willing to share a tent or room with another traveller of the same gender.

Single Travellers Safaris

A safari adventure is always shared. Even when you travel alone, there are tens of thousands of wild animals joining you on the savannah, each as compelling as the last. With a great range of tailored activities and a huge choice of destinations, we think safari is an exquisite option if you're travelling solo.

Our collection of lodges are perfect for single travellers.

Travelling solo means not compromising over what you want to do. Which is why we like to recommend camps and lodges that offer a varied range of experiences. Choose a morning walking safari and be guided by a Masai tribesmen or San tracker. Swap the afternoon game drive for a serene mokoro canoe safari, or stay out after dark on a riveting night time drive.

The safari destinations of Africa have a mystical atmosphere. They give you a sense of space and calm, whilst exciting with moments of drama. Sometimes they keep you guessing and are packed with surprise; at other times you just sit back and watch a charming procession of wildlife approach the river below. We've often felt that the landscape knows what we're thinking, and adjusts the ambience to suit the mood.

Your safari can be personalised to you.

Our knowledge of Africa enables us to create holidays that reflect your interests. Some camps provide shared activities, so you'll always be meeting new people. Other adventures are private, enabling you to set the pace and decide what to focus on. Have a love for hippos? The guides will bring a picnic to enjoy next to them. Missing leopards from your list? Trackers will know how to seek them out in the trees.

What about single supplements?

Many camps charge a single supplement but we do know a few that don't. Travelling outside the peak season minimises the supplement you'd have to pay. And with the whole of Africa at your fingertips, the options are almost endless.

The epic grasslands of East Africa, gorillas in Rwanda, rhinos in Kruger , a captivating journey through the Okavango oasis...whatever your idolised safari image is, we know where to make it happen.

Wildlife spotting: A month-by-month guide

Yes, A Solo Safari Is Possible

By Mary Holland

Serengeti National Park Tanzania

Whether it's to see the Great Migration in Kenya or go lion-spotting in Botswana , the African safari is a trip usually reserved for once-in-a-lifetime family getaways or a honeymoon to beat all honeymoons. Yet there I was, soaking up the sights and sounds of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania —solo. Early each morning, I drank tea in bed, alone and undistracted, my only companions the morning birds. During the day, my guide, Zawadi, and I traversed the park’s grassy plains scanning for animals. In the evenings, I joined the other guests—a group of Dutch tourists—for dinner at the communal dining table, and around the campfire. At first, it felt awkward, a lone traveler joining a group of lifelong friends for a meal, but the camp’s manager Angel, who also joined the table, was quick to make everyone feel comfortable. We launched into conversation about what we’d seen that day: a leopard stalking an antelope; a clan of hyenas lying outside their den. Did anyone else hear the lions roaring late last night? This was one thing that connected us all—we were filled with stories we couldn’t wait to share.

A few days in the middle of nowhere with just the hotel staff and a few other guests you don’t know for company? Yep, that can be intimidating. But it also has the potential to also be an incredibly rewarding experience. “Africa can be daunting to tackle as a solo traveler, but it needn’t be,” says Adrian Kaplan, general manager of marketing at Singita. “There is no better place than an African safari to recharge, center, and reconnect with nature.”

And reconnecting with that nature, even if you're traveling solo, isn't as daunting as you'd think. “ Gorilla trekking in Rwanda (which Singita will offer from August 2019) is a perfect, life-changing adventure [for a solo traveler], as tracking gorillas is an easy expedition to do on your own,” says Kaplan. For the trek—which any traveler can book, and isn’t exclusive to Singita—guests are divided into groups of eight (dependent on their fitness level) where guides take them into the Volcanoes National Park to track gorillas. Whether you’re entirely alone or with a group of five people, staying in a five-star lodge or a hostel, you’re still clumped together in a group of eight.

It's not just gorilla-trekking that's a fit for solo travelers. “Active trips that include activities like walking (with Khoi/San people in the Kalahari), boating (on the Boteti River to see elephants), Mokoro canoe in the Okavango and day/night drives looking for predators and prey are the kind of trips solo safari goers are most interested in,” says Dave van Smeerdijk, co-founder of safari company, Natural Selection . Even game drives require a large amount of time with other guests, as you generally share a vehicle. Towards the end of an evening game drive, the guide will generally stop the truck for sundowners. Here, huddled beside the vehicle, guests share stories over gin and tonics and biltong (jerky).

Of course, if you don’t want to interact with other guests at all, you can book a private guide and vehicle through your safari outfitter or the lodge itself, but this does come with a heftier price tag. What’s key is finding a travel company that can tailor to your needs, whatever those might be. Judi Wineland of Thomson Safaris recommends you select a company that will look after you throughout your trip, and with whom you have a good rapport. “Are they calling you back quickly? Are they hearing your needs? Also, it’s great to be completely on your own, but it really elevates the solo experience when you can meet like-minded people along the way, so choose a company that shares your ethics,” says Wineland.

volcanoes national park

"Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is a perfect, life-changing adventure [for a solo traveler]," says Adrian Kaplan, general manager of marketing at Singita.

Some safari outfitters like Robin Pope, which specializes in Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, offer various experiences that cater to guests who have similar interests such as birding and boating, and Abercrombie & Kent invites solo travelers to journey as part of a large group of like-minded people in their solo journey program. It also comes down to the safari property itself, as some are more ‘solo friendly’ than others.

“I would guide someone towards properties that have more of the old-school, communal dining programs,” says Suzanne Teng, Abercrombie & Kent product manager, Africa. She cites Kenya’s Lewa Wilderness camp, where all guests dine together with the lodge owners, as an example. Other camps—like Dunia in Tanzania’s Serengeti and Jack’s Camp in Botswana’s Makgadikgadi —also have communal dining tables where guests can interact with each other during meal times. “These types of camps encourage guests to mingle (even couples) and share their stories from the day,” says Teng.

When it comes to rates, many lodges offer a rate per room, but there are tour operators that have specials for single rates. As part of their solo journey program, Abercrombie & Kent has special offers and discounted single supplements. With Thomson Safaris, they can even pair you up with another traveler. “In terms of rooming, if we have another solo traveler of the same gender on the trip, we can match you up to share some of the cost. More than one lifelong friend has been made this way!” says Wineland. You can also save more cash depending on the time of year you choose to go. Dave van Smeerdijk recommends solo travelers visit during the rainy ‘Green Season’, from January to March, which is the low season but still offers great game viewing, as there are often specials for single rooms.

Special rates for solo travelers? That’s reason enough to travel on your own.

Cape Town and the Garden Route

Our tour was action packed, full of interesting adventures, and excellent accomodations. Our guide, Michael Wright, was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. He shared his knowledge of the local flora and fauna, the various biomes, and the ecological challenges with a fun loving spirit. Being a non drinker, I could have done with fewer wine stops, but all in all, a fabulous tour!

This tour was one of the greatest travel experiences I've ever had. Our CEO Alfred Dovey led the way throughout South Africa with such care and knowledge about everything we did while providing clear direction of what each plan of the day was and where we needed to be. I feel was was able to see, learn and experience South Africa in a way I could have never done on my own. I highly recommend this G Adventure tour.

Kruger & Cape Town Short Break by Plane

We had an amazing holiday we were always picked up on time and the staff were always helpful. Met some lovely travellers. The accommodation in Capetown was dreadful even though staff lovely. Our hotel was changed from the one we booked for and our guides agreed the Hotel cape Milner was the best and as I booked a long time ago I don’t understand why we were moved. We were only offered a small room no balcony overlooking a building site we then had to pay ourselves to upgrade. This hotel is catered for business clients the restaurant looks onto shipping crates we also realised after 3 days that we were only booked in for 4 nights not 5 but we rang rep who sorted it out . Even thouythe staff helped us out it did spoil the Capetown visit .

Benjamin is the best guide a traveler can have. He not only led the tour professionally with a lot of knowledge, but he also showed a lot of patience and understanding for everyone’s needs during the five days. By the end of the tour, we all felt like family and had a difficult time saying goodbye to each other. Bok Bus excited this trip so well from the accommodations, food and comfortable van. Thank you Benjamin and bravo for your excellent hospitality!

Reviews of South Africa Solo Tours

It was awesome! Safari was exceptional, tour guide knowledgeable, tour group outstanding.
Alfy the perfect CEO knowledgeable with a good sense of humour. Fantastic group of people on the tour with great accommodation and activities.
We cannot express our gratitude enough to this company for an amazing trip. I travelled with my grown up daughter and although am fit was a little nervous as did not want to be on a party trip. The communication with Eunice was excellent and she organised us our own twin room and bathroom. Our Capetown leg was amazing with Tariq our guide who was professional, informative, lots of fun and looked after us so well. Our backpackers were basic but clean and the trip from start to finish was so well organised. Our Jhb Kruger part of the trip was also amazing. We saw so many animals and our guides were informative and our accomodation was great. The best was staying in Marc’s treehouses where you will see the best of nature. If you are laid back, easy going and enjoy young people from different cultures and great experiences this trip is for you. Thank you to all the amazing staff for your exceptional service and helping us create lifelong memories,

Travellers seeking a holiday filled with wildlife and wonder often have one thing on their mind – The Big Five, a collection of the most elusive and difficult to spot animals on an African safari: lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo.

But there’s more to discover on a wildlife safari, and plenty of countries across the world to opt for. Perhaps you’re intrigued by orangutans in Borneo, gorillas in Rwanda, or tigers in India. Wherever you choose, have your camera on hand, as you won’t want to miss these spectacular sightings.

“A few years ago I added a Zambezi Canoe Safari to a family visit to Zimbabwe. Wide-eyed with wonder, I joined a group of four, two-seater open canoes gently paddling down the river, carrying all we needed for several days out. We had to keep watch for lurking hippos - not great to be tipped up there - and we heard lions roar in the night as we camped on the bank. Simultaneously terrifying and terrific – one of the best times of my life.”
