This fun-filled winter carnival is an extremely popular event held annually since 2006 in Gujarat. The Rann Of Kutch comes alive with folk music, dance, and fiesta that just makes every feel so joyous and merry. With lines of glistening tents to the little fairy lights, every aspect of this festival is special in some way.
The festival starts from November and continues till the day of Holi . Owing to the comfortable weather during that time, this place is always filled with visitors, merrymakers, and revellers, all of who just want to get a taste of this cultural fiasco. The festival engulfs the white dunes and makes it come alive after a long hibernation period.
Date of Rann Utsav for the year 2019 – 2020: 1st November 2019 to 28th February 2020
The festival is arranged by the Gujarat Tourism in the Dhordo Village of Kutch. The village is located merely 85 km from Bhuj. This initiative was taken by the Honorable Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, who wanted to make this festival an icon of India. The entire festival is arranged by the Tourism Corporation Of Gujarat, and they take care of accommodation, food, and even sightseeing tours.
Why Rann Utsav
A cultural fiesta like no other.
This festival is a podium for cultural activities – from folks artists to handicrafts workshops, you will find everything under the same sky. The music and dance is absolutely a foot-tapping experience and you will find yourself swaying to the rhythmic beat.
Women and men in traditional Gujarati dress dance on peppy songs just as the bonfire starts to gain momentum. The sight is pure joy and happiness. Some of these dancers and singers who come from all parts of the world are so talented that you will just be enthralled and captivated by them.
There Are More Things To Do Than The Festival
The entire area itself is worth to explore and go around. Just look up at the sky and spend the night under a sky devoid of pollution and glistening with stars. You can take a walk around the desert under the moonlight. Or, if you are feeling adventurous then head out for a hot air balloon ride in the morning that will give you a bird’s eye view of the entire place. You can also climb on top of a camel and get the authentic desert experience. You can also hop onto a jeep or bike and hit the dunes for an adrenaline-pumping adventure.
The Authentic Delicacies Fill Make You Salivate
The best part about this amazing festival is the authentic and traditional food that you will get to sample here. Rooted in its traditions, the cuisine is Kutchi. Two humongous dining halls will give you a feeling of royalty. The food is delicious and you will find yourself wanting for more.
If, however, you do not want to indulge in some finger-licking good Kutchi cuisine, then you will also find food joints just around the corners.
The Insightful Workshops Will Make You Wiser
Several workshops are held by artists for tourists. You can learn all about the intricacies of the art, and the handicrafts if you choose to attend these workshops. They are lively and you will feel as if you too are a part of this culture. You can also get hands-on experience, which is always exciting and fun.
You Will Find Yourself Shopping Till You Drop
If you are a shopaholic, then you must visit this festival. Brimming with handcrafted and well-embroidered products, the markets are also thronged with visitors. The little colourful products just make everything look so vibrant. You will find amazing souvenirs and beautiful silverware, which you just can’t resist. This place is a paradise for shoppers. Even if you are not into shopping, head to the markets to truly learn about the art and culture of Kutch. Look for leather items and small intricate embroiled products to make the most of your shopping trip.
The Past Will Come Alive
In the festival, you should also take some time out and visit the exhibition centre. This place is a treasure chest filled with information and anecdotes about the history and cultural traditions of Kutch. You will feel a buzz inside the centre as the past stories reverberate through the walls and into your minds.
Some Other Sightseeings
Upon reaching Rann head over to the Mandvi Beach. This beach is known for its amazing sunsets that will leave you aghast.
You can also make your way to Kalo Dungar which is said to be the highest point of Kutch. From here you will have a great aerial view of this white desert.
How to reach Rann of Kutch?
To reach here you can either travel by air to reach Bhuj or travel By train to reach Bhuj. From Bhuj, the village is about to 86 km. You can hire a taxi to reach the village where the festival is held. There are also government vehicles that offer picks ups and drops from the station and airport.
Where to Stay?
The accommodation is not at all of a worry if you book in advance. The tent city of Dhordo has about 400 AC and non AC tents that will give you the true experience of spending time here.
You can also opt for homesteads in nearby villages, which will also offer you traditionally built bungalows. There are small hotels and resorts. However, it is highly recommended to opt for a tent stay to fully experience the festival.
There are all kinds of amenities provided to you if you are staying in a tent city. You will have hot water, room heaters, the large dining halls and many more.
When To Visit
If you are looking to visit this impeccable festival then try and choose a period when there is a full moon. The beautiful landscape of Kutch just shimmers during full moon nights, as the glistening white light falls on the little dunes that blush with ecstasy. Such a beautiful scene is hard to get.
- Since it is a desert area the temperatures usually get erratic. So make sure you carry both light airy clothes suitable for a hot climate, and warm woollens suitable for a cold climate. You will need the woollens for the night time.
- You will need to get a Government Permit since the area is located close to the border of Pakistan. To secure a permit just go to the Bhirandirya Checkpost. You need to have a permit for all the days that you are staying here.
- Reach early at the Bhuj station, since there is bound to be a rush. Make sure you reach early and avail the pickup services provided at the station.

01 /7 a subtle shift.
As the days lengthen and vibrant green reclaims the landscape, the night sky also undergoes a subtle shift. April 2024 marks the beginning of a season of transformation in the galaxy. Here are six captivating astronomical events to watch out for: Image: Canva
02 /7 Conjunction of Moon and Mars (April 6)
In the early morning hours, sky gazers have a chance to witness a spectacular celestial event: the Moon and Mars in conjunction. Although they won't appear extremely close, with a separation of around 1.6°, observers can still enjoy the sight of the thin crescent Moon (-10 magnitude) alongside the bright reddish-orange Mars (magnitude 1.2) through binoculars. For the best view, look eastward before sunrise, preferably from a location with a clear horizon. Stargazing apps can assist in locating their precise positions. With a small telescope, viewers can even discern the Moon's craters and Mars' phases. Image: Canva
03 /7 Conjunction of Moon and Venus (April 7)
On April 7, before sunrise, turn your gaze eastward to witness a breathtaking conjunction of the Moon and Venus in the Pisces constellation. These two luminous celestial bodies will grace the sky together, forming a captivating sight. Venus, known as the "morning star," will emit a brilliant glow, complemented by the presence of the crescent Moon. This celestial pairing promises to delight early risers and skywatching enthusiasts alike. Image: Canva
04 /7 Total Solar Eclipse (April 8)
The highlight of April 2024 is the total solar eclipse. This rare event occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow on our planet. The path of totality will sweep across parts of North America, including Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Observers within this path will experience daytime turning into twilight as the Moon completely covers the Sun. Remember to use proper eye protection if you’re lucky enough to witness this awe-inspiring phenomenon. Image: Canva
05 /7 Saturn near Mars (April 10)
Saturn and Mars will come close to each other in the sky, creating a celestial rendezvous. While not a conjunction, their proximity allows skywatchers to appreciate their distinct colors and features. Saturn, with its iconic rings, will be a golden gem, while Mars, the “Red Planet,” will exhibit its reddish hue. Grab your binoculars or telescope to explore these neighboring worlds. Image: NASA
06 /7 Lyrid meteor shower (April 21-22)
The Lyrid meteor shower graces the night sky in late April. Produced by debris from Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher, this annual shower offers a chance to see shooting stars. The peak activity occurs on the night of April 21 into the early hours of April 22. Find a dark location away from city lights, lie back, and enjoy the celestial fireworks as meteors streak across the sky. Image:
07 /7 Full Moon (April 23)
And don’t forget the Full Moon on April 23! The Pink Moon, also known as the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, will grace the night sky. It’s the second full moon of spring, and it occurs when the Sun in Taurus forms an opposition to the Moon in Scorpio. This Full Moon invites us to balance between what is ours (Taurus) and what is shared (Scorpio), emphasizing form and transformation.

Picture shows Ethiopia running event, not India protest after opposition politician's arrest
A picture of a mass running event in ethiopia was misrepresented online as a rally in india's capital staged by supporters of a jailed opposition leader in march 2024. the image surfaced with the false claim as thousands took to the streets of delhi to protest the detention of arvind kejriwal, a key leader in an alliance formed to compete against prime minister narendra modi in india's upcoming national elections..
The picture, showing a long stretch of an avenue filled with a massive crowd, was shared on social media platform X on March 31.
It surfaced the same day supporters of Kejriwal, Delhi's chief minister, rallied in the capital to protest his arrest in connection with a long-running corruption probe, allegations he has denied.
His supporters said the arrest was aimed at sidelining challengers to Modi and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the marathon six-week national elections beginning April 19.
The post falsely claimed the picture showed a rally for Kejriwal in the Ramlila Maidan public ground at the capital.
"Scenes outside Ram Lilla Maidan at 12 PM Today. Sea of Yellow Army marching towards Ramlilla Maidan in support of Arvind Kejriwal at INDIA Rally. BJP shivering," it said.
The picture was also shared with a similar false claim elsewhere on X as well as on Facebook here and here . It actually shows attendees of the Great Ethiopian Run in Addis Ababa, the capital of the east African country.
Mass running event
A reverse image search on Google found the picture shared in a post on X by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia on January 23, 2022 ( archived link ).
The post, which included three other pictures, was captioned: "#GreatEthiopianRun. The biggest running event in #Africa. Take part in it next time and have fun!" It did not indicate when the picture was taken.
Below is a screenshot comparison of the picture falsely shared online (left) and the one published by Ethiopia's foreign ministry (right):
The same picture was earlier published in an article about tourism in Ethiopia published on CNN Travel on April 4, 2017 ( archived link ).
The article credited the picture to "Ethiopia Tourism Organization". Its caption read: "The annual Great Ethiopian Run in Addis Ababa is popular among tourists."
A similar photo was posted on the verified Facebook page of the Great Ethiopian Run on May 24, 2016 as part of a collage that showed the running event throughout the years ( archived link ).
The photo was overlaid with text that indicated it was taken in 2010. It was not clear if the picture circulating online was taken in the same year but both show the same city skyline in the background.
Below is a screenshot comparison of the picture circulating online (left) and the photo in the collage (right) with the similarities highlighted by AFP:
The location of the photo in the collage published on the Great Ethiopian Run Facebook page corresponds to Google Maps imagery of an avenue near the Meskel Square in Addis Ababa ( archived link ).

Total solar eclipse April 8, 2024 facts: Path, time and the best places to view
In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality.
Scroll down to see the list of U.S. cities where the April 8 total solar eclipse will be visible, the duration of the eclipse in those locations and what time totality will begin, according to GreatAmericanEclipse.com .
"Eclipse Across America," will air live Monday, April 8, beginning at 2 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu as well as network social media platforms.
On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .
The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. To discover when to see the solar eclipse in totality or the partial eclipse in locations across the U.S. outside of the path, check out NASA's Eclipse Explorer tool .
Eclipse travel
In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.
Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .
"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."
"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.
Eclipse map, path of totality
In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.
