Kayak Fishing is More Dangerous Than You Think, Here's Why

How to Estimate Kayak Trip Time – Complete Guide

kayak trip calculator

Trying to figure out how long a kayak float is going to take is tricky. Often times, I have found myself underestimating the length of my float and taking over an hour or longer than I intended. When you’re relying on someone to pick you up at the end of your float, like a shuttle service, timing is extremely important.

How fast a kayak can go

The average recreational kayaker travels about 3 mph (2.5 Knots). The speed at which a kayaker can travel depends on water conditions, the type of kayak used, the experience of the paddler, and how often the paddler takes a break from paddling and floats.

There are a lot of factors to take into account while calculating a trip in your kayak but there are a few baselines you can use to make this process as simple as possible.

How long it takes to kayak a mile

The amount of time it takes to cover a mile will vary depending on several factors all the way down to what style of kayak you’re in and how much gear you have on it. If you’re looking to meet a deadline then it’s better to be early than late.

It takes, on average, 20 minutes to travel a mile in a kayak at a pace around 3 miles per hour.

Know your float, if you’re traveling down faster-moving water than normal, then you can subtract 5 minutes. Likewise, you can add 10 minutes if the water is still or slow-moving.

It can be hard to calculate precisely how long it will take to complete a float, especially if you have never done that exact trip before. Always give yourself a 15-30 minute leeway so that you have plenty of time to enjoy the sights and snap a few pictures.

For example: Say your first float ever is 3 miles long and you have no idea of knowing how fast the river is moving. The best thing to do is assume that the float will take you an hour then add 15 minutes. That’s 3 miles per hour on average, plus a 15-minute window. 1 hour and 15 minutes of total float time for a 3-mile trip.

Here is a helpful chart to help you determine how long a float will take you. Remember that longer floats will need more leeway time to allow for more stops or slowdowns.

If you plan on making any stops along the way, adjust accordingly.

How far you can kayak in a day

Float trips that span several days and involve camping out on the side of the river are becoming increasingly popular. Couples or groups of people get together and go on a super fun camping trip improved by the magic of kayaking, I love it.

The average kayaker can travel about 12 miles per day. It is possible to travel farther, however that doesn’t leave any time for landings and breaks.

Sitting for long periods of time becomes very uncomfortable. Kayaking is about like riding in a car and I find myself wanting to stop and stretch my legs about ever 2 and a half hours. With that being said, I am a taller person (6’4”) so I have less legroom than others.

Group floats will also be a little slower just because there is more room for slowdowns and more stops to stretch and use the restroom.

Don’t underestimate how much water you will need during an all-day or several day float. Make sure you consume about a gallon per day minimum.

Multi-day float vs single day float

If you’re planning on floating for several days and camping along the river during the night, then allow yourself about 3 hours in the morning and 5 hours in the afternoon to tend to the camp and fix food.

If you’re only floating for one day from point A to B, then you should be able to kayak farther since you don’t have to worry about pitching tents at the end of the night.

Another thing to remember is that you have less daylight in the winter than you do summer time. If you’re planning a winter float, you will have less daylight to cover distance.

Helpful tools to calculate kayak trip distance with technology

I’ve gathered a couple of useful resources together that I use to plan my floats below.

The MyFitnessPal App

If you’re looking for a more detailed look at how fast you can make a float, you can download a running app like My Fitness Pal and use it during your trip. In the end, you can see your average speed and how long it took you to complete your journey. As far as apps go, pretty much any running app will do. Just use it like you would if you were running and it works just the same.

Google Maps Engine

To map your float before you go, you can use Google Maps Engine . Everyone knows about Google Maps, but this lets you plot as many custom points as you want while also allowing you to draw your own paths to them. You can draw the distance of a float on the map and it will show you the exact distance of your path. This tool is extremely helpful for planning.

USGS National Water Info System: Mapper

The USGS National Water Info System is a huge database full of valuable information if you’re wanting to accurately plan a float. You can search for the waterway you’re looking for and see all kinds of valuable information like depth, discharge rate, water temperature and so much more. The information is presented in an easy to read chart on daily, monthly, and annual intervals.

kayak trip calculator

Factors that may affect your kayak float time

There are couple factors that can severely impact your trip time, some of which are easier to predict than others.

Weather and Water Level

The weather and water level are the two easiest factors to predict and plan before before your float. Checking the weather several times leading up to the trip is recommended and you can expect the water level to reflect the amount of rainfall over the last few days.

In the spring, water levels tend to be higher than summer and fall and will flow much faster.

Be sure to find out if there is a dam upstream that may open or close gates at any time. dams can affect the water level fairly quickly and can either speed your trip up with increased water flow or make some areas of your float impassable because of low water in some situations.

Just like the water level, the obstacles that you encounter may be directly related to the weather. Downed trees, increased rapids, or impassible shallow water will slow down your time significantly depending on how easy it is to pass. Groups will take even longer because it requires more paddlers to navigate the obstacle while the others wait before continuing.

Unfamiliar Waters

If you’re doing a float for the first time, make sure to plan to take extra time to soak up the scenery, take pictures, or fish.

Navigating unknown waters requires patience and a little more concentration because you should constantly scanning ahead for obstacles, hazards, or rapids.

Particularly long floats may require you to use a map or watch for particular spots along the bank to stop and break.

Kayaking Distance Calculator: How to Use It

Kayaking is a fun outdoor activity that allows you to explore new waterways and take in scenic views. However, it's important to plan your kayaking trip carefully to ensure you can cover the necessary distance and return safely. That's where the Kayaking Distance Calculator comes in handy. This tool allows you to determine the distance you can kayak based on your pace and time. In this article, we'll provide a step-by-step guide on how to use the Kayaking Distance Calculator.

Instructions for Utilizing the Calculator

To use the Kayaking Distance Calculator, you need to fill out three input fields: pace, time, and distance unit. Here's what each field means:

  • Pace : This field allows you to select your kayaking pace from three options: slow (2 mph), moderate (3 mph), and fast (4 mph). Your pace is the speed at which you can comfortably kayak for an extended period.
  • Time : This field requires you to enter the amount of time you plan to kayak, in hours. It's essential to be realistic when estimating your kayaking time. You don't want to overestimate your abilities and end up stranded on the water.
  • Distance Unit : This field enables you to choose between miles and kilometers as your preferred unit of measurement for distance.

Once you've filled out all three input fields, click on the "Calculate Kayaking Distance" button. The Kayaking Distance Calculator will then process your data and display the calculated distance you can kayak.

The output field of the Kayaking Distance Calculator is the Distance field, which shows the total distance you can cover based on your pace and time. If you selected miles as your preferred distance unit, the distance will be shown in miles. If you chose kilometers, the distance will be displayed in kilometers.

Kayaking Distance Calculator Formula

The Kayaking Distance Calculator uses a simple formula to calculate the distance you can kayak:

Distance = Pace x Time

  • Distance is the total distance you can cover
  • Pace is the speed at which you kayak (2, 3, or 4 mph)
  • Time is the amount of time you spend kayaking, in hours

Illustrative Examples

Let's look at an example to see how the Kayaking Distance Calculator works. Suppose you plan to kayak for three hours at a moderate pace. To find out how far you can kayak, you would follow these steps:

  • Select "moderate" as your pace.
  • Enter "3" as your kayaking time.
  • Choose "miles" as your preferred distance unit.
  • Click on the "Calculate Kayaking Distance" button.

The Kayaking Distance Calculator will then show you that you can kayak 9 miles in three hours at a moderate pace.

Illustrative Table Example

Here's an example table showing the distance you can kayak based on different pace and time combinations, assuming you're measuring distance in miles:

The Kayaking Distance Calculator is an essential tool for any kayaker. It allows you to plan your trip with confidence, ensuring that you don't overestimate your abilities or get stranded on the water. By following the instructions outlined in this article, you can use the Kayaking Distance Calculator to calculate the distance you can kayak based on your pace and time.

2 weeks ago during the heatwave, we were on the Solent and the temperature fried all our instruments including the GPS plotter. Thank god we had Savvy Navvy as it worked perfectly for the entire weekend and allowed us to do everything we wanted. People say these kind of apps aren’t meant to replace the instruments on board, well I can confirm that when they instruments on board all fail, this was an absolute lifesaver. Can’t wait to test it in other countries.

Great and simple to use

I sail with friends and families and this app is a great way to illustrate “dads” boring chart work through a much more teenage friendly platform. I use both for cross reference and find it pretty accurate. Considering the price of charts it is extremely good value.

The 5 Best Kayak Tracking Apps According to Avid Paddlers

We’ve seen a lot of questions posted on kayaking forums lately asking what’s the “best” kayaking app for tracking paddling routes and fitness stats (e.g., heart rate, average pace, speed, calories, distance). Curious ourselves, we did a little digging, pouring through comments on Church of the Double Bladed Paddle, Yakkers Galore, Everything Kayaking and other social media groups to find out which apps experienced paddlers were using and what they liked about them.

kayak disabled

What follows is a high-level overview of the most oft-cited paddling fitness- and mapping-oriented tracking apps. Angle Oar has no allegiance to any of these apps, and this article doesn’t seek to review them per se.

Rather, we’ve ranked these kayak trackers based roughly on the frequency with which they were mentioned and then did a deeper dive into the five most popular ones. We’ve also included some of the verbatim comments that accompanied discussion around these kayaking apps.

Kayaking Apps & Devices We Didn’t Include

best paddling fitness app

This post primarily features tracking apps with a fitness, or fitness plus mapping, component . We didn’t want to open a can of worms by getting into smart watches, phones and fitness bands, so we’ve kept it to apps you can usually integrate with those types of devices. So, while there were a lot of references to the utility of Garmin, Google Maps, Samsung Health and handheld GPS devices in the kayaking forums, for instance, we did not include those products here.

Also, there are a host of other paddling-related apps that track the weather, wind speed, water and river conditions , mapping-only, where to go kayaking , etc. We’ll cover those in a separate post.

The Five Most Popular* Paddling Tracking Apps

Strava kayaking app

This app by Strava was initially geared to runners and cyclists, but our fellow paddlers also love it. According to the support requests we saw online, though, the company has a way to go before Strava kayak app is fully decked out with all kayak-specific tracking stats paddlers want. Still, it must be good because it was one of the most frequently mentioned apps among the forums we reviewed. One reason may be because of the popular “segments” feature where users mark designated stretches of road or trail (or river) with their performance time and others try to compete with that time.

"Strava has a kayaking and SUP drop down, plus you can create segments so other paddlers can compare paddle routes."

"I use it for kayaking, walking and biking. There is an advanced version which has a cost, but the free version is fine."

2. MapMyFitness/Fun/Ride/Walk

app for mapping your kayak route

If you added up all the mentions of these individual apps from Under Armour, they’d probably take first place. We weren’t sure what the difference was ourselves, so we looked it up. According to the MapMyFitness website , “there’s no difference between the MapMy apps. You’ll be able to record any type of workout using any of the apps or sites. The main difference…is that each is catered toward an individual audience and will provide a default activity type, as well as nearby and recommended maps based on that app's user base.”

Using the voice feedback feature, you can get updates on your pace or distance. Track calories burned, elevation and see your performance over time with charts and graphs. With 700 activity types, GPS tracking, and a community function, the MapMy apps are popular among paddlers.

"I like MapMyWalk. I go into settings and set it to paddling. I got lost in a series of small lakes and couldn't find my way back to the ramp, the app helped me figure out where to go."

"(I use) MapMyRide. It’s made for bicycling but works fine for paddling. It provides distance, speed and a map."

3. Endomondo Sports Tracker

best kayak tracking and fitness app

The Endomondo Sports Tracker , also by Under Armour, has its share of fans, too. It uses GPS tracking, lets you see your position on a map, establish goals, provides a workout history, and integrates with a wide range of watches and sensors, such as Garmin, Polar and Fitbit.

There’s a free version of the app that lets you record the basics (e.g., pace/speed, time, calories, etc.). You can set goals, get notifications when you hit those goals, and participate in challenges with friends. Add pictures to your workouts and share them on social media. All data is synched with your Endomondo profile where you can manage your account and analyze your stats. The premium plan includes even more features.

"Endomondo is fantastic. (It has) accurate tracking and it will verbally call out your splits as you go!"

kayak mapping apps by Relive

This app by Relive is geared to running, biking and hiking but also seems to be a fan favorite among kayakers. It works with just your phone, as well as with many other tracking platforms (e.g., Garmin Connect, Endomondo, RunKeeper). One of the coolest features is that it has the ability to create 3D maps of your route, presenting you with a video you can share with others at the end of your journey.

"You can track any activity. Running, hiking, biking, driving, kayaking.......many choices."

"Gives you speed, distance, time, elevation. Includes pics along the way and a video at the end."

Routie kayaking tracking app

Routie is an app that works on Apple devices and is compatible with certain BlueTooth 4.0 heartrate monitors. It has the standard statistics (e.g., distance, duration) but also has interactive graphs that display speed and altitude. Y ou can v iew your activity stats over three different time periods: the prior month, last year or all time.

Take photos and notes along the way and have them added to your map or share with them others (e.g., “Check out the Eagle’s nest on the left just past the bridge”).

"I use Routie. It’s GPS-based so you don’t need a phone signal. It tracks many different activities and also makes a map."

Honorable Mentions

best app

The five apps for kayaking above were referenced the most frequently, but quite a few other kayak tracking apps were mentioned, including these:

Paddle Logger for Water Sports

Sports Tracker

Paddle Partner

The Paddle Ready app by the American Canoe Association (ACA) was also referenced several times, but the app is no longer available.

Before You Invest in a Kayak Tracking App: Features to Consider

Although this isn’t a product review, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention some of the key features you should look for when evaluating which kayak tracking app to use yourself.

sports tracker kayak app

Device Compatibility: Is it compatible with your preferred OS? You’ll want to be sure you understand which of these are the best kayaking apps for iPhones or best kayaking apps for Android, for example. Also, identify which of the top kayaking app brands are compatible with which smart devices. Do you need it to work with a fit band or smart device (e.g., Garmin, Fitbit, Polar, Huawei, Apple Watch, Samsung phone)? Finally, do you want to be able to upload your data to another device or platform to analyze your results over time?

Interface Design: Is it easy to track what you want to track, and does it make you smile when you look at your results? Hint: check out some of the screen grabs throughout this post for examples.

Connectivity: Does it work off a cell signal (i.e., through your phone's cellular carrier) or GPS (i.e., satellite) or both? If it’s cellular only, will you be in range throughout your trip? If it's GPS, research a little more to understand which has the best kayak GPS.

Features : Is it a generic fitness app or does it also have paddling-specific features (e.g., stroke, speed, mapped route)? Does it allow you to compete against others or provide paddle-specific challenges and routes others have completed?

outriggers for kayaks

Price: Do you mind an ad popping up here and there, or are you willing to shell out a few bucks for an ad-free experience? (Or, in some cases, are you willing to spend extra on a compatible device?)

Battery Life: Depending on your device, you will only get a few hours at most with your tracking app, especially if you’re using GPS, which can drain phone apps from 10 – 20% per hour. Add in other applications, like streaming music, and it runs out even quicker. Regardless of which you choose, make sure you’re fully charged before heading out and/or bring a backup charger.

*This article is based on an informal analysis of anecdotal comments and data collection and is not intended to be a complete review or evaluation of available products.

Angle Oar LLC's mission is getting people who didn’t think they had the strength or endurance to kayak out on the water and keeping experienced paddlers there longer! We provide adaptive paddles , outriggers and other equipment to people with shoulder problems, physical disabilities or limited upper body strength due to age, injury or ability.

How does Kayak work?

The kayak explorer rewards program, ways to save money by booking through kayak, the best credit cards to use for kayak, is kayak.com reliable.

Kayak is one of the most popular travel search tools. You can use it to find anything from flights and hotels, to car rentals and excursions at your destination. As well, travel packages that include multiple trip parts are listed on Kayak.

Kayak users can go to the website, Kayak.com , or use the mobile app to look for travel and earn rewards in the process.

Here’s what you need to know about searching for travel and booking on Kayak.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

Although Kayak is an online search engine where you can find travel, it’s not a website where you can book travel. Kayak pulls prices from other travel websites and points you in the right direction when you’re ready to make a reservation. You’re not actually booking on Kayak.

Let’s say you want to book a night at a hotel, and the same hotel room is available on multiple booking platforms: a hotel’s website for direct booking or an online travel agency such as Expedia. Kayak analyzes information and lets you know where you can reserve the room for your specific dates for less. Then, you decide where to book based on search results.

kayak trip calculator

This search tool doesn’t just cover hotels. It also works for:

Activities.

Rental cars.

Travel packages.

Vacation rentals.

It even includes buses and trains. That’s right, you can find transportation operated by Amtrak and Greyhound on Kayak.

» Learn more: Is Kayak legit? Can it get me a good deal?

Because you don’t book any travel components through Kayak directly, you don’t need an account. However, if you create one, you’ll be able to participate in the Kayak Explorer Rewards Program and earn rewards when you book.

How to earn Kayak Explorer Points

Kayak Explorer is Kayak’s loyalty program. It’s free to join and you will earn 2,000 Explorer Points when you sign up. Then, you will earn points on select hotels through the Kayak mobile app.

To earn points, look for an “Explorer Points” icon next to a qualifying booking. If earning rewards is important to you, filter your search results by clicking on the Explorer Points tab.

kayak trip calculator

Rewards post six to eight weeks after you complete your stay. If you cancel your booking before you travel, you won’t earn any points.

How to redeem Kayak Explorer Points

You can redeem your rewards for:

Prepaid debit or gift cards.

Dining discounts.

Travel discounts and more.

Keep in mind that you need to have a minimum of 10,000 points in your account to make a redemption. Also, redemptions for prepaid debit cards are limited to the first 100,000 points redeemed per calendar year.

Kayak Explorer Points vary in value, depending on what they are redeemed for. In the case of a debit card redemption, Kayak Explorer Points are only worth 0.1 cent apiece. That is, a $10 prepaid credit card can be redeemed for 10,000 points.

Points aren’t eligible for a redemption until the following calendar year in which they’re earned. On top of that, the redemption window doesn’t start until March of that following year. So, for example, points posted on Jan. 15, 2022, can’t be redeemed until March 1, 2023.

Do Kayak Explorer Points expire?

Explorer Points expire at the end of the following calendar year in which they’re earned. For example, if you earn rewards on March 15, 2022, they would expire on Dec. 31, 2023. If you haven’t earned enough points to start redeeming them, they expire on March 1 of the following calendar year in which they’re earned.

If you don’t earn any points in a calendar year, then your membership in the rewards program may be terminated.

Who is eligible to enroll in the Kayak Explorer Rewards Program?

The Kayak Explorer Rewards Program is available to U.S. residents only at this time.

Kayak offers users some useful features to help find flights, track prices and figure out when to buy that elusive affordable airfare.

Kayak Explore

Can’t decide where to go? Let fate decide for you.

The Kayak Explore feature allows you to narrow down your next destination based on your budget. If you’re flexible with your destination, this feature is for you.

To start planning your future trip into the unknown, head to the Kayak Explore page. The search tool should pre-populate your departure city based on your location, but it’s possible to change it to any city you want.

You can select exact travel dates or a specific month from the date range box. Filter your trip duration from one day to more than 14 days, select your budget and zoom out or drag the map in the direction you want to go.

kayak trip calculator

If you’d rather have some idea of where Kayak is going to send you, select your trip type from the following options:

Here’s an example of Salt Lake City as the departure city with a budget of $500. We can set the trip type filter to “Anything” and search for trips in the month of November.

kayak trip calculator

Options shown by Kayak Explore include flights to:

Cancun for $466.

Miami for $266.

San Juan, Puerto Rico, for $342.

Click on the destination you’re interested in and find the “Check flight prices” option. You’ll be taken to the regular search page as if you entered your city pairs and travel dates from the home page.

Price forecast

Another nifty feature of Kayak.com is its ability to read a crystal ball and anticipate whether a flight is going to drop or increase in price.

kayak trip calculator

The airfare price forecast is determined based on the millions of previous searches Kayak users have performed, so it’s not 100% accurate at predicting the future, but at least math and trends have been involved in the recommendation.

In the previous example of a flight from Salt Lake City to San Juan for $342, Kayak recommends booking the flight as it was unlikely to become less expensive.

If you’re not happy with the amount you see, you have the option to monitor airfare prices on a given route. Sign up for price alerts with your email to track prices and receive a notification when the cost changes on your desired route.

Price freeze

If you’re happy with the price but aren’t ready to enter your credit card information just yet, you have the option to freeze the prices you see for a fee. This is done in partnership with Hopper.

If the flight cost goes up in price, you pay what’s shown when you freeze the price. If it drops, you pay the lower cost.

For example, freezing the flight to San Juan from the earlier example costs $16, and you have 12 days to complete the purchase. When you’re ready to book a frozen price, follow the instructions sent to your email.

Hacker Fares

This sounds worse than it is. We guarantee that this is completely legit and you’re not going to aviation jail.

Gone are the days of having to book round-trip flights to save money, at least on domestic itineraries. Hacker Fares are one-way flight combinations that save you money on a round-trip itinerary. You have to book two separate flights, but the savings can be worth the extra step.

Here’s an example of a Hacker Fare from Salt Lake City to New York City. Rather than booking a single round-trip fare, this Hacker Fare offered a flight to New York on JetBlue, with a return flight on Delta. All for $257.

kayak trip calculator

Both flights use different New York airports: New York-JFK and New York-La Guardia, so pay attention when you book your tickets one at a time.

Keep in mind that making two separate reservations might mean having to cancel two reservations, so familiarize yourself with the cancellation policies of each carrier, especially if you’re booking basic economy tickets. We also recommend checking baggage rules for each airline as those fees might eat into your savings.

With Trips, you can organize separate travel components, such as flights, hotel stays and rental cars into one itinerary by forwarding your confirmation emails to [email protected] . Access your itinerary in one place any time through the Kayak app or on a computer.

You will receive trip alerts for check-in times, flight delays and gate changes for the flights added to Trips. It’s also possible to share your itinerary with someone else to collaborate on plans or let family members know your location if traveling solo.

Because you’re not actually booking anything on Kayak and going directly to the travel provider or an online travel agency, we recommend credit cards that earn rewards on general travel.

This Flight Calculator Will Find the Best Trip You Can Afford With Your Tax Refund

Calculate a trip to plan with your tax refund with this Kayak calculator.

kayak trip calculator

Getting a tax refund can feel like found money, and Kayak is helping people figure out how to spend those checks on a vacation with a Tax Refund Trip Calculator.

The calculator , which the travel search engine shared with Travel + Leisure , allows travelers to input the amount of their 2022 tax refund and turns that into a flight they can afford.

After travelers enter the amount they received, the site directs them to a map with destinations and prices.

From there, travelers can choose what type of trip they want — like a city or beach getaway, a family trip, a romantic trip, or something outdoorsy — and explore possible destinations. Customers can also narrow down the search by putting in a date range and whether or not they're open to stopovers.

“If your travel dates are flexible, you can uncover some amazing deals with Kayak’s Tax Refund calculator,” Jake Bouvrie, Kayak’s chief economist, told T+L. “Right now, for example, you can snag flight deals from NYC to Europe for under $500 if you travel during shoulder season versus the peak summer months.”

This is the second year Kayak has had a refund calculator .

“Despite flight prices being up , there are plenty of places people can travel if they’re flexible. [ Kayak’s ] Tax Refund Calculator gives a great overview of all the different places you can go within your budget (or within your tax refund for that matter),” a Kayak spokesperson told T+L.

So far, the average refund amount for 2023 has been $2,910, according to statistics from the Internal Revenue Service as of March 31. While that is more than enough to plan a trip (Kayak said the average four-day domestic trip runs about $1,400 for flights and hotel), it is a 9.8-percent decrease from 2022 when the average refund amount was $3,226.
