Description

Reviews (1), things to take, available dates, include / exclude, rudranath trek – part of panch pedar yatra in uttarakhand.

Rudranath Trek location in 3600m, Rudra Nath is a remote but highly celebrated third pilgrimage site of the famous ‘Panch Kedar’ in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand .

This natural rock temple is situated within a dense forest of rhododendron dwarfs and Alpine meadows. The temple is the third of five Shiva temples in the Garhwal region that make up the Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit. Here, the deity Shiva’s face is revered as “Neelakantha Mahadeva.” The Pandavas are said to have built the temple after the great Mahabharata war. It is believed that after the war, the Pandavas left their reign in search of atonement, and in the process, they attempted to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva, on the other hand, was deeply affected by the bloodshed and refused to meet with the Pandavas. Lord Shiva hid in the Garhwal Himalayas in the form of a bull, and when he was caught by one of the Pandava brothers, the body of the bull submerged in the ground, only to later rapper in other forms, which is now popularly known as ‘Panch Kedar.’

The trek starts from Sagar Village, which is approximately 3 km away from Gopeshwar. The return route of this trek goes through the Anusuya Devi Temple. Rudranath should not be mistaken as any easy trek, hikers not accustomed to long journeys and altitudes might face some problems, hence it is generally advisable that trekkers practice a reasonable amount of physical fitness.

The Complete Guide to Kalpeshwar Rudranath Trek

  • A trek with all colours of mother nature – Vibrant, Serene and Fascinating. The trail covers two of the five Kedar’sKalpeshwar and Rudranath situated in Uttrakhand. The Kalpeshwar Rudranath trail offers splendid views as it passes through thick woods, green valleys, lush green meadows, beautiful wild flower beds and high ridges.

The trail is well defined through village’s en-route with extremely charismatic views. One can easily get lost in mesmerizing views of the magnificent peaks of Nanda Devi, Trishul and Nanda Ghunti. The initial trail from Devgram to Bansi Narayan is strenuous vertical climb of around 1500 mtr.

However the strenuous vertical climb is rewarded by the grand campsite, surrounded in the clouds, over the colourful flower beds with Bird’s-eye view of lush green meadow and snow-capped Himalayan peaks in the front. From there on to Dumak is an easy trail down the valley passing through Kalgoat.

The trail from Dumak to the high meadows at Panar is demanding, with long, hard climbs, sometimes through leech infected zones especially during and immediately after monsoons. The trail further is easy and offers grand views of the Alpine meadows and deep gorges full of wild colourful flowers and heavenly hamlet. From the ridge between Panar and Rudranath one can see Alaknanda carving its way down to the plains, and the mistysilhouettes of the foothills.

General Information

MYTH -The legend of PanchKedar, is aninteresting narration of the efforts of Pandavas to atone for the sins of their fratricide (gotra- hatya) act of killing their cousins, the Kauravas, and Brāhmanahatya (killing of Brahmins - the priest class), during the epic Mahabharata war.

On advice from sages and their trusted benefactor god Krishna they sought Lord Shiva to pardon them and bless them to attain salvation. Since Shiva was annoyed with them for their conduct during the Kurukshetra war, he tried to avoid them by assuming the animal form of a bull or Nandi and hid himself in the Himalayan Garhwal region.

But the determined Pandavas, after sighting Shiva in the form of the bull grazing in the hills of Guptakashi, tried to forcibly hold the bull by its tail and hind legs. But the bull disappeared into the ground to reappear later in his original self of Lord Shiva at five places; in the form of a hump at Kedarnath, in the shape of bahu (arms) at Tungnath, with his face at Rudranath, his nabhi (navel) and stomach at Madhyamaheshwar and his hair (locks) called jata at Kalpeshwar.

Pandavas, pleased with the revelation of Lord Shiva at five places in different forms, built temples at these five places, worshipped him and attained salvation with blessings of Shiva. The temples were later discovered by AdiSankaracharya.

Kalpeshwar houses the famous Kalpavriksha. This tree is believed to fulfill all the wishes of a person. There is a cave temple situated at height of 2134 mtr and Shiva is worshiped here in his matted hair form. Kalpeshwar is surrounded by dense woods and also terraced fields that lie in the Urgam valley.

Rudranath is situated amidst thick woods, here the 'mukh' or the Lord's face appeared and Shiva is worshipped as Neelkanth Mahadev. All around the temple are fragrant flower laden meadows. In the background, are the glittering snow-covered peaks of Trishul, Nanda Devi, NandaGhunti. Near the temple is a stream of sparkling water known as Vaitarini - the 'Water of Salvation'. The temple is surrounded by a number of pools - Surya Kund, Chandra Kund, Tara Kund andManasKund - while the great peaks of Nanda Devi, Trishul and Nanda Ghunti rear overhead.

From Toli, the path becomes a little tricky. There are very few landmarks. Continue on the trail that moves towards your right. The trail gently climbs up the ridge. You almost reach the end of the ridge in 30-40 minutes. You will see a small meadow over the ridge.

According to the stories, after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas wanted to get rid of their sins. For this, he went to Shri Krishna and wanted to know the solution from him. Then Lord Krishna advised the Pandavas to go to the shelter of Lord Shankar. There are stories that Lord Shiva was angry with the Pandavas because the Pandavas destroyed their own clan. So when the Pandavas reached Varanasi, Lord Shiva came and hid in Guptkashi, when the Pandavas reached Guptkashi, Bholenath reached Kedarnath and took the form of a bull. It is said that Pandavas received blessings from Lord Shiva.

There are popular beliefs that when Lord Shankar disappeared as a bull, the upper part of his torso appeared in "Kathmandu", which is known as Pashupatinath. Then there is the worship of Lord Shiva's arms in Tungnath, the navel in Madhyamaheshwar, the shape of the bull's back-body in Shri Kedarnath. Apart from this, it is said that Lord Shiva's jata appeared in Kalpeshwar and Mukh Rudranath. These five places are called "Panchkedar". One of them is 'Rudranath Temple'.

Rare Stone Statue

It is said that in the huge natural cave near Rudranath temple, a rare stone statue of Lord Shiva is seen in the temple. In which Lord Shiva appears to his devotees with a crooked neck. It is popularly believed that this rare idol of Mahadev, the God of the Gods, is Swayambhu and to date, no depth could be ascertained.

The difficulty of trekking to Kedarnath or Rudranath can depend on various factors, including the specific route you take, your fitness level, and the weather conditions at the time of the trek. Both Kedarnath and Rudranath are part of the Panch Kedar circuit in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India.

Typically, the trek to Kedarnath is considered more challenging compared to Rudranath. The Kedarnath trek involves a higher altitude gain, longer distance, and steeper terrain in certain sections. The trek to Kedarnath also attracts a larger number of pilgrims, and the infrastructure in terms of accommodation and facilities may be more developed.

On the other hand, Rudranath is at a slightly lower altitude compared to Kedarnath, and the trek is generally considered moderate in difficulty. However, the difficulty level is subjective, and factors such as individual fitness, acclimatization, and weather conditions can significantly influence the trekking experience.

It's important to research the specific trek routes, elevation profiles, and current conditions before planning your trek. Additionally, consulting with experienced trekkers or local guides can provide valuable insights into the difficulty of each trek.

Rudranath Trek: Exploring the Mystical Trails

Read time: 5 minutes

A beautifull and peacefull trek of uttarakhand.

Nestled in the majestic Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India, the Rudranath Trek is not just a journey through the mountains; it's a pilgrimage to one of the most sacred sites in Hinduism. As part of the Panch Kedar, a series of five Shiva temples, Rudranath holds a special place in the hearts of devotees and trekkers alike. This trek offers a unique blend of spiritual enlightenment and natural beauty, taking you through dense forests, alpine meadows, and offering panoramic views of the Himalayas. The temple’s unique setting, surrounded by towering peaks and the serene ambience, adds to the trek’s spiritual significance.

The Allure of Rudranath

Rudranath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva , reveals the deity in a natural rock face. Unlike other temples where idols are worshipped, here, Shiva is venerated in his 'Ekanan' form. The temple's secluded location and the journey to reach it enhance its mystical appeal. The region is a treasure trove of biodiversity, home to a variety of flora and fauna, including rare medicinal herbs, vibrant rhododendrons, and elusive wildlife such as the Himalayan monal. Each season transforms the trek’s landscape, from the lush greens of post-monsoon to the mesmerizing snow cover in winter, making every visit a unique experience.

Planning Your Trek

Best Time to Visit: The ideal time for the Rudranath Trek is from May to June and September to November . These months offer clear skies, pleasant weather, and minimal rainfall, making the trek safer and more enjoyable.

How to Reach: The trek typically starts from Sagar Village, which is about 5 km from Gopeshwar in Chamoli district. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant in Dehradun, 225 km away, while the nearest railway station is in Haridwar, 240 km away. From these points, buses and taxis are available to Gopeshwar, and then to Sagar Village.

Necessary Permits and Entry Fees: While no special trekking permits are required, it’s essential to register at the forest checkpoint in Sagar. A nominal entry fee is charged for maintenance and environmental conservation efforts.

Preparing for the Trek

Physical Preparation: The trek to Rudranath is challenging, requiring good physical fitness. Start preparing at least a month in advance, focusing on cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and hiking practice.

Essential Gear and Clothing: Pack light but carry all essentials. Include warm layers, waterproof clothing, good-quality trekking boots, a sleeping bag, a first-aid kit, and a trekking pole. Also, carry a water purifier and solar chargers if possible.

Health and Safety Tips: Acclimatize to reduce the risk of altitude sickness. Stay hydrated, eat light, and rest adequately. Inform someone of your itinerary and expected return.

Detailed Trek Guide

Day-by-day itinerary:.

Day 1: Sagar Village to Panar Bugyal - The trek begins with a moderate climb through dense forests, covering around 12 km . Panar Bugyal is a beautiful meadow offering stunning views of the surrounding peaks.

Day 2: Panar Bugyal to Rudranath - Trek 14 km to the sacred site. The path gets steeper, passing through alpine meadows and rocky terrains. Rudranath temple offers a serene atmosphere for contemplation and worship.

Highlights: Look out for the Anusuya Devi temple on day 1, and the breathtaking view of the Nanda Devi and Trishul peaks from Rudranath.

Accommodation: Homestays in Sagar Village and basic guesthouses and campsites are available along the trek. It’s advisable to carry tents for emergency situations.

Water Sources and Food Provisions: Natural springs and streams are the primary water sources. Carry enough food supplies for the trek as options are limited.

Navigational Insights

Maps and GPS devices are invaluable for navigation. Download offline maps and familiarize yourself with the route. Hiring a local guide is highly recommended for their knowledge of the terrain and routes.

Cultural Insights

Among the Panch Kedar temples of Lord Shiva in Uttarakhand, Rudranath Temple is worshipped as the fourth Kedar. This ancient temple of Lord Shiva is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Apart from Rudranath temple, other Panch Kedar temples of Lord Shiva worship Kedarnath as First Kedar, Madhyamaheshwar as Second Kedar, Tungnath as Third Kedar and Kalpeshwar as Fifth Kedar.

This temple of Lord Shiva is built in an ancient cave in which the face of Lord Shiva is worshipped. Due to the worship of the face of Lord Shiva here, that temple is called Rudranath. It is built amidst rhododendron and alpine meadows around the Shiva temple, which further enhances the natural beauty of this temple. Like the rest of the Kedar temples, the doors of the Rudranath temple are open only for six months a year.

( The Kalpeshwar temple is open for devotees throughout the year ) The simple reason for this is that there are many snowfalls here in the winter season and for this reason, you can visit the Rudranath temple only for 06 months a year. The height of the Rudranath temple is only 2290 meters (7513 feet) above sea level, but out of all the Kedar temples, the most difficult and long walk is of this temple.

To reach the Rudranath Temple, you have to travel 20 kilometres (total 40 kilometres) on foot. You should have at least 4 – 5 days for the complete visit to Rudranath temple so that you can complete your walking tour of this temple without any hassle. Before starting the Rudranath temple walking tour or trek, there are some things that you should know before starting your journey to Rudranath like –

01 Where does the Rudranath Yatra start?

02 When does Rudranath Yatra start?

03 What to carry with you during the walking tour of Rudranath?

04 What facilities are available during Rudranath Yatra?

05 What are the precautions to be taken during the Rudranath Trek?

06 Travel route of Rudranath Trek?

So let us know what things we have to keep in mind during Rudranath Yatra.

Rudranath Trek

Rudranath

Situated in the Himalayan mountains, the Rudranath Temple is considered a moderate to difficult trek of 20 km long (total 40 km). Whenever you make an itinerary for Rudranath temple, make sure that you are physically fit and healthy. If you have respiratory or any other type of disease that causes difficulty in breathing, then you should not travel to Rudranath temple on foot.

The length of this trek and the steep steep climb make this trek even more difficult. During the trek to Rudranath temple, you reach the temple through alpine meadows, dense forests and deep valleys. And these dense forests and deep valleys make your Rudranath trek interesting and memorable.

The Rudranath trek is considered more difficult than all the other Kedar temple treks, but the more difficult this trek is, the more pleasure you get in completing this trek. From the Rudranath temple, there are very beautiful and eye-soothing views of the major mountain ranges of the Himalayas like Trishul, Nanda Devi and Nanda Ghunti etc. You are not provided with any kind of facility by the local administration during the Rudranath trek.

Yes, during the trek, there are some places on the way where you can rest for some time and you will also get the facility of breakfast and food. Apart from this, the residents have also made small eateries and restaurants during the trek, in which you can stay overnight by paying just some rent. Most of the facilities you get during the Rudranath trek are provided by the residents so that they can make your Rudranath Yatra easy and earn a living for your own family.

Three different treks are leading to the Rudranath temple. All these three treks present landscapes of different natural beauty. But most of the devotees and trekkers prefer to start their Rudranath trek from Sagar village. Now it depends on you how you want to trek Rudranath by road.

There is a very famous saying among the residents for Rudranath Trek, “The Ascent of Rudranath, Battle of the Germans” , you will know how true this saying is only when you do the Rudranath Trek.

Rudranath Temple Aarti Timings

rudranath_aarti_timing

The Prabhat Aarti in Rudranath Temple takes place at 08:00 in the morning and Sandhya Aarti at 06:30 in the evening. You should plan your trek in such a way that when you reach Rudranath after the trek, you can enjoy the evening aarti and the next day when you return from Rudranath, you can start your return trek by taking morning aarti.

Rudranath Temple opening date 2022

The doors of Rudranath temple will be opened for the general devotees on 19th May 2022, which will remain open for the devotees for the next six months.

Rudranath temple closing date 2022

So far no date has been fixed for the closure of the doors of the Rudranath temple. By the way, the doors of Rudranath temple are closed till the second week of November or even after Bhai Dooj, the doors of Rudranath temple are closed for the devotees.

Rudranath Trek Entry Fee

In Panch Kedar temples, no entry fee is charged for visiting the fourth Kedar Rudranath temple. But this temple is located in the area of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. Because of this, when you do the Rudranath trek and take any plastic packaging items with you such as water bottles, Maggi and biscuits etc.

Then the Forest Department will ask you for any plastic packaged items you have. Nos. charges Rs.100/-. In return for all the money you have deposited at the counter, you are given a slip, which you deposit at the forest department’s counter at the time of the return of your journey, then you get that money back.

But if you get less than one plastic packet out of the plastic packets you have written, then you can be fined Rs 5000/-. This decision on duty on plastic packets has been taken a while back so that plastic waste in forests and mountains is minimized.

Activities in Rudranath

Whenever you plan for the Rudranath trek and you have some spare time, you can also visit some ancient temples while doing the Rudranath trek. Apart from this, alpine meadows also come during the trek, which you can also take out. These grasslands are known as Luti Bugyal and Panar Bugyal.

Many mythological ponds like Chandra Kund, Manas Kund, Surya Kund and Tara Kund are also located around the Rudranath temple.

Rudranath Trek

Rudranath trek overview.

Rudranath Trek is filled with the vibrant, peaceful, and fascinating colors of mother nature. In this trek, two of the five Kedars—Kalpeshwar and Rudranat, located in Uttrakhand are covered. The Kalpeshwar Rudranath trek runs through dense forests, verdant valleys, verdant meadows, lovely wild flower beds, and high hills, all of which provide breathtaking vistas. The trail is clearly marked and passes through several charming towns along the way. You will also witness the stunning vistas of the Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Nanda Ghunti peaks that will quickly ensnare the viewer.

The spectacular campground is above the vibrant flower beds and enveloped in clouds with a bird's-eye view of a lush green pasture. And as you take the arduous uphill climb, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the snow-capped Himalayan hills in the front. The route from Dumak to the tall grasslands at Panar seems difficult, with protracted ascents and some areas where leeches are present, especially during and shortly after the rainy season. The remainder of the walk is simple and provides amazing scenery of the Alpine meadows, deep canyons brimming with wild, vibrant flowers, and lovely villages. One can see the hazy outlines of the foothills and Alaknanda cutting its way to the bottom to the plains from the peak between Panar and Rudranath.

Rudranath Trek Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Reaching Devgram from Helang via Rishikesh

Height: 6,627 feet

Duration: 10–12 hours of driving; a 30-minute hike

Travel 8 to 9 hours from Rishikesh to Helang and take a rented jeep from Helang to reach Devgram in the Urgam district.

You should be able to go to Devgram in around an hour. The final 2 miles must be hiked.

The initial path is a dirt track through lush valleys that is stone paved. As you get closer to the settlement, the trail turns into a paved road.

You will pass a fresh water tap that appears like a cow's mouth along the route. The water runs through here all day long.

You can view the stunning Alaknanda & Kalpganga river confluence not far from Helang.

Day 2

Trek to Kalpeshwar and back

Height: 7,217 feet

Duration: 2 to 3 hours

Begin your tour to Kalpeshwar from Devgram, close to Prathik Lodge. The walk begins by ascending a concreted path that passes through towns and farmland.

In around 15 minutes, you'll traverse through lush green valleys. As you go, stay towards the left of a river and you may find a waterfall in the distance up ahead in 5–10 minutes.

At this point, the roadway becomes level. Trek over lush meadows in the Kalpganga valley that are clearly visible to the right.

You will approach a suspension bridge in the next 5 minutes. Once you have crossed the bridge, you will see the stairs leading up to the Kalpeshwar temple.

Follow the same route back to reach Devgram.

Day 3

Trek to Bansi Narayan from Devgram

Altitude: 6,667 feet to 11,482 feet

Duration: 8 to 10 hours, 12 kilometers

Start your day 3 with a hearty breakfast and keep lunch as you won't be able to locate anywhere to buy food along the journey.

Take the route leading left from Prathik Lodge and trek through terraced fields where locals cultivate potatoes and rajma (kidney beans).

Reach the water wheel after a further 10-15 minutes of trekking and follow the trail of this water for 40 to 45 minutes. Following the trail will drop you to the Bansa village where you can see the beautiful Urvashi temple.

As you take the hike after leaving the temple, a bridge will soon be seen. Take the ascending trail that you get after crossing the bridge.

Stay to the left of the stream and keep walking.

On the right hand side of the ridge, after about 40 minutes of trekking, comes a modest stone temple. Continue your trail ahead into the dense woodland.

A few boulders will appear on the left end of the route after 45 to 50 minutes. You can have your lunch here.

As you ascend, you arrive at the Bansi Narayan temple in a short while. It requires around 7 to 8 hours to get here from the initial point of the trek of day 3.

Beyond the temple, you have to head to the natural caves where you can stay for the night as it has the capacity to accommodate 30 - 40 people.

The path to the cave passes over several enormous stones which takes around 25 to 30 minutes to gradually ascend.

Rest at the caves from where you can see the snow-covered Himalayan peaks Nanda Devi, Trishul, Dronagiri, and Nandaghunti.

Day 4

Trek from Bansi Narayan to Dumak

Altitude: 11,482 feet to 7,874 feet

Duration: 5 to 6 hours covering 10 kilometers

Wake up to the views of a cave with amazing vistas of vibrant wild flowers scattered across lush green fields with beautiful Himalayan peaks directly in front.

Retrace your steps to the Bansi Narayan temple. The route turns to the hill to the right after you pass the temple. In five to ten minutes, you'll reach the deep woodland.

Stick to the right side of the valley as you continue down the muddy route. This stroll amid overgrowth and thickets filled with vibrant wildflowers is moderate downhill.

After 10 minutes, you will find one water stream where you can refill your water bottles. Further in your trail, you will encounter a few fallen trees and some boulders after which the descent becomes steeper.

The Alaknanda valley spreads out ahead after 45 to 50 minutes where you will locate Kalgoat settlement, a place that you can use to rest.

Dumak and Kalgoat are located around 7 kilometers apart. From the hamlet of Kalgoat to Dumak town, a two to three-hour journey along a clearly designated path is required. The path should be followed as it passes through plants and big stones.

A 20–30 minute stroll through the hamlet will bring you to an ancient stone Mahadev temple. The Dumak side of the hamlet is where this temple is located.

Continue trekking down the path that winds among the trees and bushes. After about an hour, the settlement of Dumak can be seen in the distance.

In around 40 minutes, you will arrive at a pre-primary school with a blue sign.

Either camp along the creek a bit ahead or stay at the guest house, which is approximately five minutes up the route.

Day 5

Trek from Dumak to Panar via Toli

Altitude: 7,874 feet to 11,155 feet, via 9,186 feet

Time: 6 to 8 hours to cover 12 kilometers

Start your trek early on day 5 and take the paved path that leaves Dumak village just on the opposite side. You will arrive at the ridge's end in about 25 minutes.

Take the trail that goes to the right where you will find severe descent along a muddy and narrow path. Stay on the valley's right side and keep walking for another 40 minutes and witness the Rudra Ganga river.

Cross the river and move towards right into the woods. In about 45 minutes, you will reach the end of the ridge, and enter the huge meadows of Toli.

Find yourself surrounded by gorgeous alpine lakes and vast green pastures at Toli, which is encircled by a dense forest.

The route gets a little more difficult after Toli as there are not many notable sites. Follow the route as it curves to the right and gradually ascends up the ridge. In 30 to 40 minutes, you practically reach the summit of the ridge.

Continue to ascend to the left until the rise gets steeper. You observe the greenery thinning after 45 to 50 minutes. When you reach the summit of the ridge, keep travelling along this route. From here, the trail contours the mountain to the right and leads to the Panar's slope meadows (11,155).

Stay in the tourist hut or a shepherd settlement nearby.

Day 6

Trek to Rudranath from Panar

Altitude: 11,155 to 11,811 feet above sea level

Begin the following morning after breakfast. Take the left-pointing route that leads to the ridge. To your left, there are several sizable stones and snow-covered summits.

The trail ascends the hill gently and after 25 to 30 minutes of climbing, you can glimpse the Panar fields below. After another 30 to 40 minutes of trekking, you come to a large overhanging rock on the left . Take in the breathtaking view from here, with the broad, lush Panar meadows below and the snow-capped summits in front, shrouded in clouds.

Continue on the ridge-climbing track and soon you will come to a section with large stones on each side of the route. After which the trails are well defined so your journey further will be smooth.

Marvel at the vistas of the Himalayas from this hilltop between Panar & Rudranath as you find yourself surrounded by snow-capped mountains and emerald valleys on all sides.

Rudranath is connected to Mandal Forest & Anusuya Temple by a short ridge on the left. The Mandal forest is traversed by this lovely route.

Keep the river to your left as you continue up the ascending dirt route. Flags and prayer bells will soon be visible in the distance. It takes around 15 to 20 minutes to get there.

On this path, this represents the highest mountain. From Panar, it requires 3-3.5 hours to get here.

After an hour-long climb, the Rudranath shrine can be seen from a distance. Prior to ascending, the route falls.

Day 7

Trek from Panar to Sagar

Altitude: 11,155 to 6,561 ft

Time taken: 4-5 hours to cover 12 km

Begin your last day of trek with a hearty breakfast. From Panar, follow the rocky, muddy route that descends to the left. In about 30 minutes, you will reach Lunti Bugyal's grasslands.

Continue your trek on the route that heads in the direction of your left from Lunti Bugyal. In 15 to 20 minutes, the route reaches a deep woodland. Continuing on the muddy trail for 45 minutes will drop you at a water stream. Take the cement bridge across it and trek through the woods.

After 25 to 30 minutes, a lovely meadow is visible in the distance and to reach there, you are required to hike another fifteen minutes.

The area is surrounded by forests on all sides where you can find a few tea and food stalls.

The route from the meadow continues into another woodland. Terraced fields may be seen to your left once the woodland has cleared for 30 to 45 minutes.

Follow the clearly marked track and trek through the fields. A brook will slowly appear as you move forward. From the point you reach near brook, the route narrows and goes through rocky stairs as it leads to Sagar village.

At the bottom of the stairs leading to the trail is the bus stop. Sagar village is on the Mandal-Gopeshwar route, and from here you may take a shared jeep or bus to Gopeshwar.

One can travel towards Chamoli village from Gopeshwar and catch a bus that goes to Haridwar & Rishikesh. After reaching Haridwar or Rishikesh, you are free to go to any location of your choice.

General Trivia About the Rudranath Trek

The mythology of PanchKedar is an intriguing account of the Pandavas' attempts to atone for their fratricide (gotra-hatya) crime of killing their siblings, the Kauravas, and Brhmanahatya (killing of Brahmins, the priest class), which occurred during the epic Mahabharata conflict.

On guidance from gurus and their beloved benefactor deity Krishna they asked Lord Shiva to forgive them and enable them to gain salvation. Shiva wanted to get away from them since he was upset with them for their behavior during the Kurukshetra conflict. He converted himself into a bull or Nandi inside the Himalayan Garhwal area. But after spotting Shiva as a bull grazing in the hills of Guptakashi, the tenacious Pandavas sought to restrain the bull by force.

However, the tenacious Pandavas attempted to forcefully grab the bull with its tails and rear legs after spotting Shiva in the shape of the bull feeding in the foothills of Guptakashi. But the bull vanished beneath the earth, only to return later at five different locations as Lord Shiva. The five locations where Lord Shiva appeared was at Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar. When Lord Shiva appeared in five distinct locations, the Pandavas were delighted. They erected temples at each location, worshiped Shiva, and received his blessings to find redemption. Later, AdiSankaracharya found the temples
