The Best Florence Instagram Spots for Your Next Trip

Florence is a photographer’s dream city. Every alleyway, every restaurant, every viewpoint is charming, unique and picture-perfect. Although there are definitely no shortage of Florence Instagram spots…it still pays to know the best before arriving. Thankfully, the best Instagram spots in Florence also tend to be the best things to do in Florence.

Long story short, if you’re sightseeing – most of the time you’ll already be there. Enjoy!

Piazzale Michelangelo

Let’s start with the best…shall we?

Piazzale Michelangelo is my personal favorite Florence Instagram spot and a must-add to any Florence itinerary. This gorgeous piazza on a hill is home to the most magnificent views over Florence. I would actually go as far as to say that Piazzale Michelangelo is one of the most Instagrammable places in Italy! Cause let’s be honest, we all know that fantastic views = the perfect photo spot.

In fact, the only place I’ve ever seen a better sunset than Piazzale Michelangelo was our perfectly-timed ending to the Path of the Gods Hike on the Amalfi Coast . It’s that good!

Locals are known to grab a bottle of wine, a pizza or both and head here to watch the sunset over the spectacular view of the Duomo. There is usually live music in the summer and it’s the best place to end a magical day in Florence.

Some of the best Duomo views from Piazzale Michelangelo

Il Ponte Vecchio

Il Ponte Vecchio, translating to “Old Bridge” in Italian, has connected the Duomo and Palazzo Pitti neighborhoods above the Arno River since the 12th century. The Vasari corridor runs above the bridge, connecting Palazzo Pitti all the way to Piazza della Signoria. The bridge has survived countless floods, most famously the flood of 1333 where it was almost completely destroyed. It was also the only bridge in Florence to survive the Nazi invasion in WWII.

Today, the Ponte Vecchio bridge is home to many fine jewelry stores and gelato shops. If you time your visit around sunrise when the bridge is free of tourists, it’s one of Florence’s best photo spots by a landslide.

Take the best photos with the Ponte Vecchio from the nearby Ponte Santa Trinita.

A view of the Ponte Vecchio taken on the Ponte Santa Trinita – one of the best Florence Instagram spots in the city

il Duomo di Firenze and Giotto’s Bell Tower

If you’re looking for places to take pictures in Florence, look no further than the Florence Cathedral – the proud trademark of the Florentine skyline. In Piazza del Duomo you’ll find both the Duomo di Firenze and Giotto’s Bell Tower, an iconic power duo that has stood together as a symbol of the Renaissance since the 15th century.

The “star of the show” has always been Brunelleschi’s Dome (shown below). Constructed in 1436, it is the largest masonry dome ever built and Michelangelo’s inspiration for St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome (a must-see with 4 days in Rome ).

On the official website, the Brunelleschi Pass costs €30 and buys you access to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore Museum, Baptistery of San Giovanni, and the Archaeological site of Santa Reparata. You’ll also gain entrance to climb the 463 steps to the top of the Duomo and the 414 steps to the top of the Bell Tower (a height of 278 feet).

When you purchase a ticket in advance, which I would strongly recommend doing if you plan to hit these Florence Instagram spots, you can make a reservation for a specific time to climb up to the observation deck of the Duomo. Climbing the Bell Tower, on the other hand, usually includes waiting in a line a couple hours long. If you have your heart set on climbing both, I would recommend getting in line at opening time for the Bell Tower. Then you can climb the Duomo later in the day!

🚩 Or Skip the Line Completely…

If you didn’t budget for hours of waiting-in-line time during your Florence trip, consider booking an all-inclusive skip-the-line guided tour. Below are some of Viator’s highest rated Florence Cathedral tours:

  • Skip-the-Line Florence Duomo with Brunelleschi’s Dome Climb -Duomo Only (⭐️ 5/5)
  • Skip the line: Duomo Skywalk – Florence Heaven – Duomo Only (⭐️ 5/5)
  • Florence Baptistery, Cathedral, Duomo Museum, Giotto’s Belltower – Duomo and Bell Tower (⭐️ 4.5/5)

Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardens

Designed by the famous Italian architect and designer, Filippo Brunelleschi, the original Palazzo Pitti was built in the 15th century for the Pitti family. The palace was greatly enlarged in the 16th century when it was sold to the Medici family.

Today, Palazzo Pitti houses some of the most impressive art collections in Florence, including the Palatine Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art. Behind the Palazzo lies the famous Boboli Gardens, the largest gardens in Florence. The development of the gardens spanned over 400 years, from the 15th to the 19th century.

The palace and the surrounding gardens are one easily one of the most Instagrammable spots in Florence. Wander around feeling like Italian royalty while snapping a few beautiful shots to show your friends back home. However, I would not suggest going in the dead of summer like we did…105 degrees is not wandering weather.

View on Art Rooftop Bar

Since I’m forever chasing a rooftop, View on Art is my favorite cocktail bar in the city and the perfect Florence photo spot. (No matter if I’m eating at my favorite restaurants in Trastevere , bar hopping in Florence, or enjoying a quick day trip to Milan – an Aperol Spritz is a must-order.)

Located around the corner from Piazza della Repubblica, it was my favorite place for a “casual” spritz or glass of chianti overlooking the Duomo di Firenze. View on Art is the perfect spot to bring visiting friends and family or to wrap up a trip to Florence with a killer view and a refreshing cocktail. It’s also shockingly not as expensive as you’d think it would be.

And let’s be honest, it tops the list of most Instagrammable restaurants in Florence, does it not?

Piazza Santa Croce

Piazza Santa Croce holds a special place in my heart since my little Italian apartment was located a stone’s throw from the stunning Santa Croce Basilica. The basilica and the surrounding piazza is one of the Florence Instagram spots that’s not-to-be-missed during your trip.

This basilica is actually the burial spot of many famous Italians, including Michelangelo and Galileo. There is a statue memorial to Dante as well (shown below to the left of the Basilica), but Dante’s remains are buried in Ravenna after he was exiled from Florence.

As stunning as the exterior of the Basilica is, it’s even more impressive inside. Famous frescos, paintings and gold details cover the interior. For only €8, I would say it’s definitely one of the most picturesque places in Florence.

To photograph Santa Croce at its most scenic, visit Florence at the end of December and wander through the Italian Christmas markets with a cup of mulled wine and a warm crepe!

Historic Piazza Santa Croce

Basilica di Santa Maria Novella

If you’re looking for Florence photography locations, it doesn’t get much better than the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella.

This 13th century convent turned basilica is often overlooked on the typical tourist’s itinerary, but its gorgeous facade is one of the best Florence photo spots. It’s also the only church in Florence with its original interior.

Entrance to this basilica costs only €7.50 and grants you access to beautiful works by Masaccio, Giotto, Filippino Lippi, Duccio di Buoninsegna and Ghirlandaio…as well as a can’t-miss Florence photo opp.

Basilica di Santa Maria Novella as one of the best Florence Instagram spots

Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte

Only a short walk from Piazzale Michelangelo (five minutes according to Google Maps), the Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte basilica was built somewhere between the 11th and 13th century. Since the basilica overlooks the entire city, it’s safe to say this is one of the best photo spots in Florence.

The Abbey contains the remains of famous Italian men, including Carlo Lorenzini, the author of  Pinocchio.  The church is free to enter and, if you’re wondering where to watch sunrise in Florence, this is it baby 👏🏼

It’s also a great place to enjoy the sunset, especially if the Piazzale Michelangelo steps are full.

City views from Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte

Gucci Garden

As the leather capital of the world, it’s no surprise that Guccio Gucci himself is Florentine.

Located in Piazza della Signoria in the historic Palazzo Mercanzia, the Gucci Garden consists of a multi-floor exhibition as well as a restaurant by a three-star Michelin chef. The galleries and pieces are exquisitely ornate and sometimes it’s fun to admire clothing that’s worth more than a house!

If your Instagram feed is a little on the bougie side, Gucci Garden definitely makes the list of the most Instagrammable places in Florence.

A stunning Gucci gown at the Gucci Garden Museum

San Lorenzo Leather Market

Shopping time! Florence is the leather capital of the world, so what would this great city be without a series of leather markets?

The biggest and best is San Lorenzo, located near the train station, Stazione Santa Maria Novella. The vendors are always willing to give you a better price if you pay with cash, but make sure to never  accept the first price they give you. Almost all vendors in the leather market are willing to barter for goods.

In addition to some great shopping, the San Lorenzo Leather Market is one of the best Florence spots for an impromptu photo opp – so plan in advance.

While you’re in the Santa Maria Novella neighborhood, don’t miss out on a visit to Mercato Centrale to try some of Florence’s best Italian food. Head here to try traditional Italian dishes such as cannoli, arancini, and Neapolitan pizza, as well as international options like dumplings, sushi, and imported beers.

Florence Street Photography

Some of the best Florence Instagram spots can be found by simply wandering around the city! Florence is filled with ancient cobblestones, Tuscan architecture and winding alleyways. With quaint enotecas and osterias on every corner, the city itself is an Instagrammer’s paradise.

Piazza Santo Spirito

Don’t be fooled by this basilica’s plain facade. Basilica di Santo Spirito is an incredible representation of Renaissance architecture and is one of the best Florence Instagram spots for your photo journal.

During its design, Brunelleschi considered not only the visual aspects of its construction, but also how the priests would move about the space. Many consider the original design to be some of the best work of Brunelleschi’s career.

You can enter the church for free or snap some shots outside in front of the basilica. If you go inside, be warned – it’s one of the only churches in Florence that requires women to cover their shoulders upon entry.

The facade of Basilica di Santo Spirito is an Instagrammable spot of Florence

Il Porcellino: the Bronze Boar Statue

The Bronze Boar, Il Porcellino, is located near the Ponte Vecchio in the Loggia del Mercato Nuovo (a mini version of the San Lorenzo Leather Market). Water flows from the boars mouth and its original purpose was to provide water to the merchants trading here.

Similar to throwing a coin in Rome’s Trevi Fountain (a highlight on my long weekend in Rome itinerary ), legend says that rubbing the boar’s nose will ensure your return to Florence. Whether the legend is true or not, it certainly is one of the best Instagrammable places in Florence for a memorable photoshoot.

Florence Instagram Spots at the City’s Best Art Museums

What’s more Instagrammable than priceless works of art?

Many of the world’s greatest works are housed in Florence’s art museums. For the price of admission, you’ll be free to admire masterpieces by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Giotto, Giorgio Vasari, Fra Angelico and many others. If you’re in search of Florence Instagram spots, add these Italian art museums to your list!

The Uffizi Gallery

Along with the Louvre Museums in Paris and the Vatican Museums in Rome, The Uffizi Gallery is one of the most visited art museums in Europe. It holds some of the world’s most precious masterpieces from the Middle Ages all the way into the modern period. One of its most beloved pieces is Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus.”

An entrance ticket to this world-famous museum costs €25. But keep in mind, it’s not the price that stops tourists from seeing the Uffizi, it’s the popularity. If you plan to visit, make sure to make a reservation online on the official website in advance.

Galleria dell’Accademia

Another of the best Florence Instagram spots is the world-famous home of Michelangelo’s David, Galleria dell’Accademia.

The Accademia Gallery houses many priceless Italian paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance period. However, the star of the show has always been the statue of David. There is a fake David standing in Piazza della Signoria in place of where the original statue once stood. When a chair thrown out a window of the Palazzo Vecchio landed on David and cracked off one of his arms in 1910, the original was moved inside and out of harm’s way.

If you plan on including the Accademia Gallery in your Florence photo tour, I would suggest making a reservation online at least a week in advance.

Palazzo Vecchio & Loggia dei Lanzi

The Palazzo Vecchio is not only the city hall of Florence. It’s also one of the city’s best art museums and a Florence Instagrammable place that’s not-to-be-missed.

Palazzo Vecchio is also the former residence of the Medici’s – the Italian banking family that helped fund the Renaissance in the 15th century. Their famous Vasari corridor spans all the way from Piazza della Signoria, across the Arno, to Palazzo Pitti on the other side. The museum houses masterpieces by Michelangelo, Vasari and Donatello. If you love art, it’s definitely worth a visit while in Florence.

Standing in front of the Palazzo Vecchio, the Loggia dei Lanzi houses one of the first open-air sculpture gardens in the world. Built in the 14th century, the most interesting fact about the Loggia is that all of the masterpieces, with the exception of Michelangelo’s David, are originals.

Shown below are two of the most recognizable statues: Perseus Holding the Severed Head of Medusa (1554) and Giambologna’s Rape of the Sabines (1583).

Both Palazza Vecchio and the Loggia dei Lanzi should be on your shortlist of Florence Instagram spots!

The Best Instagrammable Day Trips from Florence

As the hub of Tuscany, there is no shortage of historic Italian towns to visit from Florence. Your photo tour of the best Florence Instagram spots isn’t complete without a day trip or two to these Insta-worthy destinations. Too bad a day trip to Lake Como (especially in the fall) is pushing it time-wise, or else it definitely would have made the list!

Fiesole offers some of the best views in Tuscany…so it’s definitely worth a visit on your Florence photo tour!

The Monastery of San Francesco sits at the top of the hill and is the best place to enjoy both the views and the sunset. Since it’s only an hour bus ride from Florence, Fiesole is easy to fit into any itinerary.

Sunset views of Fiesole outside of Florence

Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre, translating to five lands, is one of Italy’s most picturesque coastal towns. Although I would definitely suggest adding it to your itinerary, it can be difficult to plan. If you attempt it, make sure to pay careful attention to the train timetables. Trains are the only way to navigate between the five towns, and they only run until a certain time. After that, you’re pretty much stuck in whatever town you’re in until morning, and Airbnbs here are anything but cheap.

The easiest way to get to Cinque Terre from Florence is by taking the train into La Spezia Centrale. From there, you can take a local train to any or all of the five towns.

Stunning view of the cliffside houses in Manarola

Only a short, 30 minute train ride from Florence, Siena is one of Tuscany’s most famous towns. It’s filled with historic landmarks, beautiful architecture and magnificent churches. It’s best known for hosting the Palio horserace twice a year.

At around €14 for a round-trip ticket, there’s pretty much no excuse not to visit Siena and snap plenty of Insta-worthy shots.

Beautiful views of Siena from the drive to the train station

San Gimignano

San Gimignano is in the heart of wine country and is home to 15 stone towers. At the height of its power, the town boasted a total of 72 towers! After the plague ravaged the city in 1348, it faded from the world’s view…until it was rediscovered as a tourist attraction in the 19th century.

San Gimignano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a fantastic spot to sample local Tuscan wines. It’s also the location of the best gelato in the world and is filled with Instagrammable spots around every corner.

Instagram photo opp in San Gimignano Tuscany

I’m sure you’ve heard of this Insta-famous Italian gem! Venice is well known wordwide for it’s picturesque canals, gondola rides and being one of the best places to celebrate Carnevale.

The easiest way to get to Venice from Florence is by train to Venezia St. Lucia. The ride only takes about two hours, but I would suggest a day-trip of no more than five or six hours. Although Venice is interesting to visit, there is not much to do in the actual city besides Piazza San Marco and a gondola ride.

However, you will need more time if you visit Venice during Carnevale. Expect the streets to be completely packed with tourists. You may need to get up early to get the best IG shots.

When it comes to Pisa Instagram spots, the Leaning Tower pretty much takes the cake.

This landmark is famous worldwide, and tourists flock to Pisa from every corner of the globe to take cheesy photos with this epic failure of Italian architecture. The tower is very impressive to see in-person and the town itself is charming. However, like Venice, you don’t need to budget a lot of time to see Pisa.

Final Thoughts

Florence Instagram spots are not hard to come by in this magnificent Tuscan city. Every viewpoint, every street corner, and every Italian restaurant is the perfect Insta-shot just waiting to happen. Make sure to charge up your camera, pack all your photography essentials , and get ready to capture some amazing content in beautiful Florence.

21+ Most Instagrammable Photo Spots in Florence

I have to admit, I feel a bit silly typing out the word “instagrammable” (have I reached peak millennial?), but it’s just true: there are a ridiculous number of instagrammable photo spots in Florence, Italy.

And whether the word “instagrammable” makes you cringe a bit inside or you are 110% enthusiastic about the Instagram life (in which case, we’d love to have you follow us on Instagram for more Italy and Europe content!), there’s no denying that Florence is insanely photogenic.

From idyllic gardens to gorgeous viewpoints from historic towers to stunning churches, photographing Florence is an absolute delight from (almost) all angles.

If you’re looking for the most instagrammable places in Florence, this is where you need to go.

Towers + Overlooks for Taking Pictures in Florence

Giotto’s bell tower.

While the cupola of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (also simply known as the Duomo) is popular to climb, people who didn’t book tickets in advance or are scared of heights might prefer the view from the bell tower next door!

Not only will climbing Giotto’s Bell Tower give you amazing views over Florence, it’ll allow you to get some up-close-and-personal shots of the epic cupola as well!

Piazzale Michelangelo

Hands down, if you’re looking for the most popular instagrammable place in Florence, Italy, this is it!

Piazzale Michelangelo is one of the most popular photo spots in Florence for good reason.

From Piazzale Michelangelo, you’ll have amazing views over all of Florence, including the Ponte Vecchio Bridge, the Duomo, and the Palazzo Vecchio.

Piazzale Michelangelo is also one of the best sunset spots in Florence, but fair warning: if you want to get photos of yourself without other people in them, the crowds at Piazzale Michelangelo at sunset will not make it easy.

Palazzo Vecchio

Far less crowded than the more iconic views of Florence but equally stunning, the Palazzo Vecchio is one of our personal favorite photography locations in Florence, Italy!

From the top of this tower, you’ll be rewarded with a magnificent view of the Duomo from the side, allowing you to easily capture how magnificent the building is as well as how clearly it dwarfs the rest of the city by comparison.

Tower of San Niccolo

The Tower of San Niccolo is the hardest to access of Florence’s instagrammable spots, but if you get the chance, it’s very rewarding.

The views of the Arno River, Ponte Vecchio, and beyond are supposed to be stunning.

Why is it hard to access?

The tower is only open for limited hours in the afternoon during the summer months–it’s closed entirely the rest of the year.

You can check dates, hours, and other information for visiting the tower here .

Markets + Food to Photograph in Florence, Italy

Mercato centrale.

Florence’s most popular food market is Instagram heaven.

From elaborate fruit stands to intricate cheese displays, this market is the perfect place to break out your camera.

Keep in mind that the bulk of the market breaks down by 2-3pm each day, so for the best shots, come earlier in the day.

San Lorenzo Market

Right outside the Mercato Centrale sits the outdoor San Lorenzo Market, which boasts leather goods and souvenirs galore.

While the leather here is not known for its quality–you’ll need to duck into one of Florence’s revered leather shops for that–the displays are eye-catching enough to rate it among the most instagrammable places in Florence.

Panino Shops and Trattorias

Florence is bursting at the seams with adorable panino shops and trattorias–you’ll see them on every corner–so be sure to stop into some of each for some epic shots (and delicious food).

While the famous All’Antico Vinaio does serve tasty sandwiches in a beautiful atmosphere, don’t feel like you need to wait in the giant line there in order to appreciate the charm of panino shops in Florence!

There are delightful spots all around the city, and when it comes to the low light typical in restaurants, it’s much more fun to photograph Florence a bit further from the crowds.

Mercato Nuovo + the Porcellino Statue

Want to ensure you come back to Florence?

In between taking some instagrammable shots, rub the nose of the Porcellino statue for good luck!

Good luck aside, the Porcellino statue still makes a great photo opportunity, and the Mercato Nuovo it is located right next to is another excellent opportunity to get some shots of leather goods and souvenirs.

Did you know that–according to some accounts, anyway–gelato was invented in Florence?

While the claim will probably forever be disputed, it’s yet another good reason to take plenty of photos of and with gelato in Florence!

Whether you hold your cone out in front of the Ponte Vecchio, in front of the Duomo, or down one of the city’s many charming side streets, there’s nothing like some colorful gelato to add a little something to any of these photo spots in Florence.

Instagrammable Piazzas for Photographing Florence

Piazza del duomo.

If you’ve seen one Instagram photo of Florence, it’s probably from the Piazza del Duomo!

As the center of Florence’s tourism world and home to the Duomo, the baptistery, and several museums, no hunt for instagrammable spots in Florence would be complete without plenty of shots here.

Piazza della Repubblica

A historical square and a beautiful carousel–that’s Instagram gold.

The Piazza della Repubblica is one of our favorite places to snap photos in Florence, Italy, and its central location means that you’re almost certain to walk by it several times or more during your trip!

Fair warning, there has been quite a bit of construction happening here in recent years, so be prepared to have to hunt for the best angles.

Piazza della Signoria

Home to the Palazzo Vecchio, the gorgeous Neptune Fountain, and an outdoor display of gorgeous statues, the Piazza della Signoria is bursting with instagrammable photo opportunities.

The Piazza della Signoria is one of those places that will remind you that the City of the Renaissance is an artwork unto itself–no ticket to the Uffizi (though the museum is located right here, just saying) required.

The Best Garden Photo Spots in Florence, Italy

The boboli gardens.

The Boboli Gardens easily make the list of most instagrammable places in Florence.

Once the haunt of the wealthy Medici family, the gardens were laid out in the 16th century and have been maintained since.

While there are beautiful views of Florence in the gardens, our favorite spots face away from the city and boast views of the stunning Tuscan countryside.

Our personal favorite of all the Florence photo spots in the gardens is near the porcelain museum–that’s where the below photo was taken.

blooming pink flowers overlooking the tuscan countryside in boboli gardens, one of the most instagrammable places in florence italy

The Rose Garden

Located just underneath the Piazzale Michelangelo, the Rose Garden offers similar views to the famous Piazza–but with fewer crowds and beautiful roses in the foreground!

A bonus for hitting up the Rose Garden on your quest to find the most instagrammable places in Florence?

If you go in the spring, the entire garden smells absolutely amazing.

The Bardini Gardens

While smaller than the Boboli Gardens, the Bardini Gardens are home to great views over the city!

When it comes to photographing Florence, though, the real star of the Bardini Gardens is the tunnel of wisteria that blooms in the spring.

April is generally considered the best time to catch the wisteria in Florence, but of course the season can vary depending on the year.

Two things are for certain though: the wisteria in the Bardini Gardens is one of the most photogenic attractions in Florence, and it only lasts a few weeks a year!

Bridges to Take Photos of Florence From

Ponte vecchio.

As one of the best-known landmarks in Florence and (in my biased opinion, anyway) prettiest bridges in the world, no list of instagrammable spots in Florence would be complete without the Ponte Vecchio.

The bridge is lined entirely with glistening jewelry shops (the only type of business legally allowed to exist on the bridge).

The result is a bridge that practically glitters, and pulls your eye in a thousand directions as you walk across it.

Ponte Santa Trinita

As lovely as photographing the Ponte Vecchio as you stroll across it is, for the full effect of the beauty of the bridge itself, you have to step a little further back.

The nearby Ponte Santa Trinita Bridge boasts beautiful views of the Ponte Vecchio and is one of our favorite spots to photograph the famous bridge.

The exterior of the uffizi.

The Uffizi may be one of the most famous art museums in the world, but you don’t even have to step inside to start appreciating how beautiful it is.

The 16th-century structure was built by Giorgio Vasari to house administrative buildings for Florence (hence its location right next to the Palazzo Vecchio, which is still the functioning town hall of Florence), and is gorgeous.

San Miniato al Monte

Piazzale Michelangelo a bit crowded for you?

Hike up a bit further to San Miniato al Monte!

Not only will most of the crowd melt away, you’ll have a chance to photograph both an overview of the city and the 1000-year-old church!

While you can walk up to the church, if climbing isn’t your thing, consider joining a vintage Vespa tour !

Not only is it a fun way to access the view, but a vintage Vespa also provides plenty of Instagram matieral in its own right and is one of our favorite memories from all of our trips to Florence.

Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy

Tucked behind an unassuming door a short walk from the Santa Maria Novella Train Station sits the stunning Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy.

Don’t be confused by the name: this isn’t a modern pharmacy, but a 600-year-old perfumery and apothecary.

Not only is the interior incredibly beautiful and a dream to photograph, but you can also pick up some great local Italian souvenirs while you’re there!

Along the Banks of the Arno River

You don’t have to be on one of Florence’s photogenic bridges to capture beautiful views from them!

There are gorgeous places to take photos in Florence all along the river, but for one of the best views of the Ponte Vecchio, walk to the river from the Uffizi Museum and turn toward the bridge.

This area is generally crowded, but also stunning and worth enjoying when photographing Florence!

Like most popular touristic cities around the globe, you’ll need a few tricks up your sleeve to take your best Instagram photos in Florence, Italy!

Here’s what to consider before setting off.

Get up early to take pictures in Florence.

This could apply to anywhere, not just getting Instagram shots in Florence, but this city is definitely easiest to photograph without enormous crowds around you–and getting up early is the simplest way to avoid those crowds.

If you do manage to drag yourself out of bed early (good job, seriously), I recommend heading directly to the Piazza del Duomo and embracing your chance to photograph the Duomo without swarms of people around it.

… or stay out late.

Not an early bird?

Us either, unless we happen to be battling jet lag at the time.

Luckily, with the right equipment, taking photos of Florence at night is also a great way to avoid the crowds.

Embrace golden hour.

The golden glow of Tuscan light is always amazing… but during golden hour, it gets even better.

Golden hour is the perfect time to hit spots like the Ponte Vecchio, the Ponte Santa Trinita, and The Piazzale Michelangelo (just be prepared to share the view–these areas get crowded during sunset in Florence for a reason).

Don’t be afraid of the rain at Florence photo spots.

Honestly, I believe Florence is frequently at its prettiest right after a rainstorm!

… And the fact that the crowds disperse when the rain sets in doesn’t hurt, either).

man riding his bike toward the camera in florence italy shortly after a rainstorm

Be patient.

You won’t regret waiting for the two minutes it takes for the people standing behind you to clear out of your shot.

Give yourself a couple of minutes to try to get the framing right, and you’ll cherish your photos that much more for years to come.

Be respectful when photographing Florence.

In a world of Instagram, (relatively) inexpensive DSLR and mirrorless cameras, and excellent cameras on smartphones, it’s no surprise that constant photo-taking can become a bit of a contentious topic.

Everywhere you go, from famous cities to local hikes, it seems that more people are taking more photos than ever before.

In general, I don’t think you need to shy away from taking photos and enjoying the most instagrammable places in Florence, but some people definitely take it too far.

view of the ponte vecchio from banks of the arno river in florence italy

My biggest tip for photographing Florence is simple: don’t be one of those people.

Don’t hog photo spots if you see other people waiting. Don’t take photos of things that have signs stating not to photograph them. Don’t climb on structures that you aren’t supposed to climb.

In other words, just be a reasonable person.

It’s not that hard, and we’ll all be better off–and end up with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the best photo spots in Florence–for it.

Alberto’s quite literal Instagram name sums up his Instagram perfectly: A daily picture of Florence. However, his feed isn’t chock full of the wide familiar cityscapes we all know and love. Instead, he takes a rather different perspective by highlighting gorgeous blink-and-you’ll-miss-it architectural details in stunning muted shades. Sigh.

10 of the Most Instagrammable Places in Florence

Samantha Rosen

There's a reason why Florence is at the top of many travelers' bucket lists — between the food , architecture, history, fashion and culture, there's really no place else in the world like it. The next time you find yourself in the Renaissance City, make your way to these 10 remarkable places and start snapping. Sure, your Instagram followers may get a little jealous, but this highly-photogenic Italian city was made for the gram — with 16 million tourists visiting every year, the region's popularity can't be denied. Here are our top picks for the most Instagram-worthy spots in Firenze.

1. Ponte Vecchio

Ponte Vecchio is one of the most famous bridges in the world and there's nothing like taking a stroll across it, set along the Arno river. Translated to Old Bridge, the stone arch bridge was the first one built in Florence and some of its shops have been there since the 13th century. Beauty and history combine here for the ultimate snap.

2. Giardino delle rose

Is there anything more bellissima than a rose garden? Giardino delle rose overlooks the Arno river and is the ideal place to appreciate nature and sneak away from the crowds. The garden is adjacent to the Piazzale Michelangelo, so do yourself a favor and head up the hill to watch the sunset afterward. Pure bliss.

3. Piazza della Repubblica

Walking around this city square is almost like stepping back in time, although this historic plaza has seen a lot of changes over the last hundred years. But between the cafès, musicians and artists, the piazza bustles with energy day and night. Look for the merry-go-round, ideal for that perfect Florence Instagram picture you've been dreaming of.

4. Santa Maria del Fiore/The Duomo

The Duomo, as Santa Maria del Fiore is known to locals, is likely what comes to mind when you think of Florence, namely the red tiles of Filippo Brunelleschi's cupola. Made with more than four million bricks, it took over 140 years to build the cathedral, and this should be a must-see on your trip to the city. Take a moment to admire its beauty — and document it for your Instagram followers to see later.

5. The Statue of David

Michelangelo's magnificent David statue resides in the Galleria dell'Accademia and fortunately, admirers are now allowed to take pictures of this iconic and historic statue — just remember to turn your flash off . No trip to Florence is complete without a visit to this gallery — it sees over a million visitors a year — and while David gets most of the shine, you'll also find the work of other esteemed Florentine artists throughout the museum.

6. Basilica di Santa Croce

There's no shortage of beautiful churches in Florence and this is one of the greats. The largest Franciscan church in the world, the building of which began in 1294, it's also the burial place of Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli. Pro tip: after getting your shot, head over to All'Antico Vinaio to get one of the best panino (singular panini) you'll ever have; it's a short walk away and worth the detour.

7. Tempio Maggiore / The Great Synagogue of Florence

This magnificent Moorish-style synagogue is one of the largest in south-central Europe and dates back to 1882, although it was rebuilt and reconstructed after the Holocaust. Make sure to document this amazing part of history during your trip, and share it with your friends so they can experience its beauty, too.

8. Uffizi Gallery

The Uffizi is easily one of the most spectacular art museums in the world — and certainly one of the most-visited. It's filled with the works of Italian Renaissance artists and you could spend days here and still not be able to see and appreciate everything that the gallery holds. Be sure to stop by Botticelli's Birth of Venus; pause to admire and then share it with your friends on Instagram.

 9. Boboli Gardens

Directly behind the Palazzo Pitti (the Royal Palace), these beautiful gardens are the perfect place to wander for an hour or three. One visit and you'll understand why this is one of the most famous open-air museums in the world. Home to trees, fountains and sculptures, the Boboli Gardens date back to the 15th century, but make for an ideal 21st century snap.

10. Gusta Pizza

This restaurant makes heart-shaped pizzas because they know people — we're looking at you, American students studying abroad — will Instagram them. But it's Italy after all, so of course Gusta's wood-fired stone oven pizza is fresh and flavorful. Despite drawing in tourists, the pizzeria is a hit — on and off Instagram.

Instagrammable places in florence

1. Cathedral Of Santa Maria Del Fiore (The Duomo)

Can you have a list of the most instagrammable places in Florence without including the iconic Duomo? I don’t think so.

The Santa Maria del Fiore, more simply called the Duomo, is the most well-known symbol of Florence. It is the world’s fourth largest church, and no panoramic view of the Florence skyline is complete without it.

The Duomo complex consists of 4 parts: the cathedral, Brunelleschi’s Dome, Giotto’s Bell Tower, and the Baptistery; all of which are incredibly photogenic.

The exterior of the cathedral and baptistery are clad in red, white and green marble and is truly majestic looking. However, the king of the show is the enormous Brunelleschi’s Dome which is covered in over 4 million red bricks!

Entrance to the cathedral itself is free but beware of long lines to enter which can sometimes take hours. Also, there’s not much to see inside.

Climbing the dome, or entering the other structures require tickets which you can purchase here . Purchasing a guided tour gives you priority access and a better understanding of the history behind these buildings and the art pieces within.

Climbing Brunelleschi’s dome involves climbing 463 steep steps in a narrow corridor and might not be for everyone, but the view of Florence that you’re rewarded with can be well worth it.

Tip: If you’re like me and you prefer your Instagram photos to be a little more affordable, rock up to the cathedral early in the morning before the lines start to form. You can get amazing Instagram-worthy shots of the exteriors of these beautiful buildings. You’re welcome!

Note: The cathedral is closed on Sundays and other religious holidays, it is a functioning cathedral after all. All the other structures have different opening hours which you can find here .

Instagrammable places in florence

2. Giotto’s Bell Tower

I know I mentioned the bell tower being part of the Duomo complex, but honestly, this architectural beauty deserves its own section in my list.

Just like the exterior of the cathedral, the campanile (or bell tower) is also clad in the same red, white and green marble and is truly stunning that makes it one of the beautiful instagrammable places in Florence.

Ascending Giotti’s bell tower is slightly more doable at 414 steps with no narrow, claustrophobic towers. An equally rewarding panoramic view awaits you, just like that from the top of Brunelleschi’s dome.

Tickets to the Duomo will include Giotto’s bell tower as well, depending on which option you choose.

Tip: Taking a picture of this stunning beauty at night is sure to give you many ‘likes’! Walk over to the Duomo complex at night and get amazing shots of the bell tower bathed in floodlights.

Instagrammable places in florence

3. Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge)

Ponte Vecchio is the oldest bridge in Florence, built in 1345.

It crosses the river Arno and there are many jewelry and souvenir shops built on it. It’s also known to be the only bridge in Florence that was not destroyed during World War II.

This is one of the Iinstagrammable places in Florence where you want to take your picture not from the bridge but from somewhere else. A popular way to take a full shot of this bridge is by standing on the adjacent bridge, Ponte Santa Trinita.

The Ponte Santa Trinita is another iconic bridge in Florence, just south of the Ponte Vecchio. From this bridge, you can get the whole Ponte Vecchio in your shot. This is a popular tourist spot so go early in the morning if you want to avoid the crowds.

Tip : Another amazing and not well-known way to get your shot is from the river.

Taking a river cruise on a traditional boat called a barchetto provides you with incredible views of this ancient bridge. Enjoy a glass of wine or soft drink while gliding down the river.

Instagrammable places in florence

4. Piazza Della Repubblica

One of the main squares in Florence, Piazza Della Repubblica has been around since medieval times. It used to be the center of the city, surrounded by markets. You don’t want to miss this one of the popular instagrammable places in Florence.

There used to be a bell located at the central column, which would be rung when pick-pocketers were around. The bell warned shoppers to be careful.

There’s no bell there to warn you now. But there is a very enchanting carousel (merry-go-round) located right in the center of the piazza. Looking for a Florence photo spot? This is it, you guys.

Interesting fact: there is another Piazza Della Repubblica in Rome as well. Don’t get them confused!

5. The Statue Of David

The most famous statue in the world, the Statue of David.

Made from a single block of marble, marble that other sculptors had deemed unusable. And from this came the magnificent sculpture that made Michelangelo famous beyond words.

Can you visit Florence and miss the symbol of Florence? No, you cannot. This is an ultimate instagrammable places in florence that you cannot miss.

The original statue of David, Michelangelo’s masterpiece, can be found at the Accademia gallery. The Accademia is one of the most visited places in Florence and can get incredibly crowded.

Purchase a skip-the-line ticket so you can avoid standing in line for hours.

Even with the ticket, you’re guaranteed crowds around David. I know I sound like a broken record by now, but go early if you want to avoid the crowds.

Other than David, the Accademia also features some of Michelangelo’s other works such as the Hall of Slaves. It also features a legendary sculpture, Giambologna’s Rape of the Sabines.

Legend has it that the Romans did not have enough females in their tribe. They then decided to abduct the women from a neighboring tribe, the Sabines. And this formed the beginning of western European civilization. Horrifying, yet fascinating.

Tip: If you’re only interested in seeing David, did you know that there are two other life-sized replicas of David in Florence, which you can see for free?

One is at the Piazza Della Signoria outside Palazzo Vecchio. This is the original location of David before he was moved to the Accademia. There is another bronze replica at Piazzale Michelangelo.

Note: Camera flashes can damage old artwork, so the museum staff is strict about it. So turn that flash off when you take your shot of David.

Instagrammable places in florence

6. Basilica Of Santa Maria Novella

Basilica of Santa Maria Novella is a beautiful church right opposite the city’s main train station.  The train station, Stazione Santa Maria Novella, is named after the church.  If you’re arriving in Florence by train, this is probably the first sight you will see.

And what a beautiful sight it is. Is there a plain-looking church anywhere in Florence? I haven’t seen one yet.

The exterior of Santa Maria Novella is simply stunning, with white and green marble. The interior is filled with some wonderful artwork.

The one that captured my attention the most was Brunelleschi’s (yep, the same one who designed the dome at the Duomo) Crucifix . Looking at it just gives me the chills.

Instagrammable places in florence

7. Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy

Just around the corner from the Basilica is the Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy, the oldest pharmacy in the world. It started in the 1200s when Dominican monks from the church made herbal remedies and ointments.

Although it has now been privatized, the products sold here are still mainly made by hand following the original recipes of the monks. The pharmacy sells soaps, perfumes, scented candles, and skin care products.

This place just smells divine .

Since everything is made with the best ingredients, prices can run pretty high. But don’t let that put you off getting a wonderful souvenir.

Note: The Pharmacy is located at 16 Via Della Scala, just around the corner from the main entrance of the church.

Instagrammable places in florence

8. Piazzale Michelangelo

Anyone visiting Florence always wants that picturesque view of the Florence skyline. And Piazzale Michelangelo is the most common Florence Instagram spot to get that shot.

Piazzale Michelangelo square is on top of a hill on the other side of the Arno river. While the rest of the sights mentioned earlier are all close to each other, this square is a little further away, on the other side of the river.

You can still walk here, but do note that it is a bit of a steep uphill climb and it’s around 30 minutes from Ponte Vecchio. If you’re relatively healthy, this shouldn’t be a problem. It’ll be a good workout to burn those calories from all the delicious Italian food you ate.

If you prefer the bus, bus 12 from the city center can get you here. The touristy hop-on, hop-off buses also make a stop here (how can they not?), so you can take that as well.

The panoramic views from this piazza are incredible, especially at sunset. If you thought your view of the Florence skyline was amazing during the daytime, wait till you see it with all of its lights turned on.

This is one of the most popular Florence Instagram spots and it does get pretty crowded around sunset. If you want to avoid the crowds, I highly recommend coming at sunrise instead.

Tip: Everyone thinks this is the best place to get that postcard-worthy shot of Florence. But, if you walk uphill for a little bit more, you can get to an even higher vantage point with much fewer crowds: The Basilica of San Miniato al Monte. Read on to find out more!

Instagrammable places in florence

9. San Miniato Al Monte

San Miniato al Monte is a beautiful basilica built atop a hill. It was named after an Armenian prince by the name of Saint Minias. Legend has it that he was beheaded by King Decius after he refused to bow down to the pagan gods.

Even more amazingly, after he was decapitated, he picks up his head, puts it back on his shoulders, and flies back to the cave he used to live in. And that is where San Miniato al Monte is built now.

This is one of the oldest churches in Florence, built as early as the year 1015. That makes it more than a thousand years old! The exterior of the church is built with beautiful green, white and black marble, in a Tuscan Romanesque style.

The interior of the church is nothing short of beautiful and mystical. There is even a crypt within the church that supposedly holds the bones of Saint Minias.

And let’s not forget the main reason you made that uphill hike up here. The incredible panoramic view of Florence, without the crowds of Piazzale Michelangelo. The best view is at sunset, so don’t miss it.

It takes about 5-10 extra minutes of uphill walking from Piazza Michelangelo to get here. Bus 12 also makes a stop here, so that’s an option as well.

Tip: Monks at the church run a gift shop within San Miniato. They sell wine, honey, herbal teas, and tinctures that they make themselves. Talk about a souvenir that you cannot find elsewhere!

10. Porte Sante Cemetery

Porte Sante Cemetery, or Sacred Doors Cemetery, is right behind the San Miniato church. This is where many notable catholic Florence residents are buried. One of them is the creator of Pinocchio, Carlo Lorenzini (more popularly called Carlo Collodi).

This cemetery is pretty much an open-air museum with numerous beautiful sculptures, intricately designed private tombs, and chapels. Strangely enough, being here doesn’t feel creepy at all. It just feels very peaceful.

The most romantic-looking sculpture there is that of the Mazzone siblings, dancing away in the afterlife. Just looking at it makes me want to cry. This is another beautiful place in Florence, that you cannot miss.

Since it’s located right behind San Miniato, this is another amazing place to get a bird’s-eye view of Florence.

Instagrammable places in florence

11. Giardino Delle Rose (Rose Garden)

The Giardino delle Rose or Rose Garden is one of the most beautiful places in Florence.  It is located near (on the way to) Piazzale Michelangelo. It was created in 1865 and houses about 400 different types of roses.

Roses aren’t the only plants found in the rose garden. Giardino delle Rose also houses more than 1000 different types of plants! Several bronze sculptures by a Belgian artist named Jean-Michel Folon are on permanent display here as well.

The beautiful roses aren’t the only thing good about this garden. The panoramic view of Florence that you can find from here is pretty amazing. This garden is on the same hill as Piazzale Michelangelo after all.

Tip: This leads me to one of the most instagrammable places in Florence. One of the sculptures found in the rose garden is a hollowed-out suitcase (Partir) . Take a shot of Florence through this open suitcase and your Instagram feed will be golden!

Doesn’t that look amazing? This is one of my best photo spots in Florence!

Note: The rose garden is open every day of the year from 9 a.m to sunset, except for Christmas and New Year’s; and it’s free to enter.

Instagrammable places in florence

12. Iris Garden (Giardino dell Iris)

The Iris Garden, just like the Rose Gardens, is located near Piazzale Michelangelo.

Hundreds of species of irises are planted here in this garden. Next to the pond, you can find marshland irises from Japan and Louisiana. This is a very relaxing place to have a stroll while admiring the beauty of those blooms and makes this place one of the beautiful instagrammable places in Florence.

The Iris Garden however is only open for 20 days every year, when the flowers are in full bloom. It’s 20 days between the end of April to the beginning of May. If you are in Florence at this time, don’t miss this place on your way to Piazzale Michelangelo.

Entry is free, but donations are most welcomed. For more information on opening days, visit the Iris Society’s website .

Like every other attraction located on this hill, the Iris gardens also offer an amazing view of Florence, so don’t forget that Instagram shot!

13. Palazzo Pitti

Palazzo Pitti is another one of Filippo Brunelleschi’s projects. It is an enormous palace that was built for the wealthy Pitti family in 1457. Around a century later, the then bankrupt Pittis sold the palace to the Medici family.

The Medici family was a powerful banking family which ruled Florence for almost three centuries. If you are planning a trip to Florence, I highly recommend reading about the Medici. Their influence is seen all over the city.

This book by Paul Strathern describes a vivid and dramatic account of the Medici family. Reading up about them will greatly increase your understanding of the various architectural wonders you will see in Florence.

Anyway, the Medicis expanded Palazzo Pitti to the ginormous size that it is now.  Today, it houses several museums within its gigantic structure, with a fantastic list of collections.

The palace and the gardens behind are huge, with plenty to see. The Palatine Gallery holds most of the paintings acquired by the Medicis. There are also the Royal Apartments, the Gallery of Modern Art, The Medici Treasury, and the Museum of Costume and Fashion.

My favorite part of the palace was the Museum of Costume and Fashion. It was fascinating to see the history of fashion trends from the 16th to the 20th century. There are also some historical clothes worn by the Medicis in the 1500s!

14. Boboli Gardens

Behind Palazzo Pitti, lie the Boboli Gardens. They are huge! Approximately 111 acres, that’s the size of roughly 100 football fields! Imagine you had a garden that big.

But that’s exactly how big the Medicis garden was!

The Boboli Gardens is a splendid place, half garden, and half open-air museum. The Gardens are filled with wonderful sculptures such as Neptune’s fountain (the man with the fork), and even a naked dwarf riding a tortoise..hmm.

There are plenty of wonderful Instagram spots to be found in this garden. It’s also a very nice place to have a picnic. Yes, you can have a picnic here. But don’t leave a mess, you can be fined for it.

At the end of the Boboli Gardens, at the top of a hill, is the Kaffeehaus. It really functioned as a coffee house for the Habsburg-Lorraine family, who owned the palace and gardens after the Medici.

The Kaffeehaus is now open to the public and is another great spot to get your panoramic picture of Florence.

Tickets to the Boboli Gardens can be included in the Palazzo Pitti tickets, or you can buy them separately if you plan to go on a different day.

Instagrammable places in florence

15. The Bardini Gardens

The Bardini Gardens is another stunning garden in Florence, although not as large as the Boboli Gardens. Located just a few minutes from the back gate of the Boboli Gardens, this garden is often missed by tourists.

Who can blame them? They are swamped with the numerous tourist spots found in Florence.

The Bardini gardens used to be a functional garden belonging to the Mozzi family, so you can see plenty of fruit trees inside. Why is it on a list of the best Instagram spots in Florence, you ask? This is why:

The Wisteria tunnel is one of the most romantic backdrops you can find. This lush display is best viewed when the flowers are in full bloom, which occurs between April and May.

Instagrammable places in florence

16. Palazzo Vecchio

Palazzo Vecchio is a very formidable-looking building. This fortress was built in the 1200s, and it also served as the house of the Medicis before they bought Palazzo Pitti. It now houses a museum and also functions as the city hall.

Within the palazzo, are many secret passages, which were used by the Duke of Athens to escape from the palace.

I highly recommend a guided tour of these secret passages , makes you feel very Famous Five-like!

Tip: Rising above the Palazzo is the fierce-looking Arnolfo Towers. I know I made you climb several towers already, but climbing this tower offers you an amazing view of the Duomo!

It’s much less difficult compared to the Duomo and Giotto’s bell tower, and less crowded.

Note: Tickets to climbing the tower can be purchased separately or combined with the Palazzo tickets .

Instagrammable places in florence

17. Piazza Della Signoria

Right outside the Palazzo Vecchio is the Piazza della Signoria, one of the most important squares in Florence. This was the original location of Michelangelo’s David.

An amazing-looking copy of David can now be found here, along with many other famous works. The Fountain of Neptune and the original Rape of the Sabines are some noteworthy ones.

Instagrammable places in florence

18. Uffizi Gallery

Located just adjacent to the Piazza della Signoria, the Uffizi Gallery is the most visited museum in all of Italy. It is also the earliest known museum in modern Europe.

It features splendid artwork ranging from the Middle Ages to the Modern Period. The best ones not to be missed would be The Birth of Venus and Medusa.

The building itself is pretty stunning, making for great photos.

With thousands of visitors to the museum DAILY, skip-the-line tickets are a must. It’s also best to visit in the late afternoons after the crowds have died down. This way, you can take your time to look around.

Tip: Uffizi gallery tickets are known to sell out sometimes. It’s highly recommended that you book your tickets months in advance.

19. Fontana Del Porcellino

Err, yes it’s a pig. But it’s a very famous pig. And you love Florence, don’t you? Stroke his nose and legend has it that you will return to Florence.

Photo by Renato Pantini on Instagram

It’s so famous that there are copies of it all over the world.

Located at Piazza del Mercato, this famous bronze boar is just a short walk from Piazza dell Signoria and Ponte Vecchio. You’ll be surprised to know that it’s also a copy. The original Porcellino is at the Bardini museum.

20. Street Art At Via Toscanella

Do all the Florence Instagram spots have to be old and medieval?

Walk into this quaint street Via Toscanella, in the Oltarno neighborhood, and witness modern street art in Florence. Most of the artwork along this street is by Hoppn Yuri, who is famous for his red figures.

Take a picture with these paintings and show the world: Not all that glitters in Florence is old.

Via Toscanella is located just off Piazza Pitti, where Palazzo Pitti is located.

21. Torrigiani Gardens

Hidden gem alert, you guys! You should add this into your list of instagrammable places in Florence.

Not many people know about this amazing garden located in the heart of Florence. A lot of locals don’t even know about it. This is the largest privately owned garden in Europe.

Set in Viale Petrarca, the Torrigiani Gardens are filled with a multitude of plant species from all around the world. And plenty of sculptures as well. Is there a garden in Florence with no sculptures? I think not.

The gothic tower, which was built in 1821, even has a stone spiral staircase within. Hello, Instagram spot Florence, y’all!

Since the Torrigiani families still live within its grounds, the garden is not open to the public unless via reservation. Contact them here for a private guided tour by the owners themselves.

22. Basilica Di Santa Croce

Another church, you ask? Yes, there are just so many of them and they’re all just so darned beautiful!

Basilica di Santa Croce is an enormous church, that was supposedly built to rival the Santa Maria Novella church. Many people come to this church to visit the tombs of some famous people buried here and it also makes it one of the unique instagrammable places in Florence!

Michelangelo, Galileo, Vasari, and political leader Machiavelli are all buried here. But the interior of the church is stunning beyond words. With 16 chapels and hundreds of amazing masterpieces, this is one Florence photo spot not to be missed!

Tip: If you go through the church bookshop, behind the church lies the Scuola del Cuoio. It’s a leather school where you can see the students making quality leather bags the old-fashioned way. Don’t forget to buy one!

23. Flea Market On Piazza Dei Ciompi

This flea market that was once located on Piazza dei Ciompi has moved to the Largo Petro Annignoni instead. But it’s still very much known as that antique flea market from Piazza dei Ciompi.

There are plenty of antique and vintage items on sale here. And definitely plenty of photos to take!

This flea market is situated near the Basilica di Santa Croce.

24. Bargello National Museum

The Bargello is an impressive-looking building. It used to be the residence of the chief of police (also called the Bargello) before it became a prison in the 18th century.

Now a museum, the Bargello features some spectacular artwork by Donatello and Michelangelo. Donatello’s version of David , which is much different from that of Michelangelo’s, also resides here.

Instagrammable places in florence

25. Badia Fiorentina

The Badia Fiorentina is the oldest church in Florence, established in 978. It has an iconic bell tower which is simply magnifico and one of the popular instagrammable places in Florence.

Badia Fiorentina is located near the Bargello Museum, Palazzo Vecchio, and the Uffizi Gallery. The Badia is open daily and entry is free.

26. The Appenine Colossus Sculpture at Villa Demidoff

The Appenine Colossus is a massive sculpture of Appenino, a mountain god who is half man and half mountain. It formed part of the gardens of the now destroyed Villa Medici. The remains of this garden are now a part of Villa Demidoff.

Appenino is 35 feet tall and has what looks like stalactites coming out of his beard. With his left hand, he crushes the head of a monster, which spews water out into the pond in front.

If you go to the back of the statue, you will see a dragon sitting atop a cave. Entering the cave will lead you into the rooms within the Appenino that makes it one on the best instagrammable places in Florence!

Villa Demidoff is located in the town of Pratolino. Take bus 25A from Piazza San Marco, and get off at the last stop, Pratolino. The bus journey takes about 45 minutes.

27. The Streets Of Florence

Sometimes, the best photo spots are just normal life in a beautiful city. So put down those maps (or google maps) and just wander around. Florence is such a beautiful city that you are bound to find some amazing photos for your feed.

Tip: The Oltarno district, across the river, is much more picturesque to wander about.

Aaaand, that brings us to the end of that list!

I’m so glad you went through the entire list of instagrammable places in Florence, those are a whole lot of gems. But if you want to recap the places where you can get that drool-worthy panoramic shot of the Florence skyline, here they are:

Where To Get Panoramic Views Of Florence

Where To Watch The Sunrise In Florence?

1. Ponte Vecchio

3. San Miniato al Monte

Everyone tries to get a shot of the sun setting over the Florentine skyline. And sunsets are beautiful, don’t get me wrong. But watching the sunrise over Florence is a view that just cannot be described in words.

Most people are still sleeping at sunrise, which is a bonus for you. Fewer crowds make for better pictures.

How Do I Get Around In Florence?

Florence is a walkable city.  Almost all the main attractions that are at the Historic Centre are within walking distance of each other so it is easier to go and shot your instagrammable places in Florence.

Not much of a walker? Bike around the city. Although there are no bike paths within the city center, you can bike on the roads. Just be careful of motorists.

If you’re going out of the city center, biking is even more convenient as there are over 90km of bike paths in Florence.

Tip: Traffic rules in Florence do not allow cyclists to go down a one-way road in the opposite direction. You can get fined for this. So if you find a one-way road, get down and push the bike across.

Bikes can be rented from the train station at Santa Maria Novella.

Can I drive In Florence?

No, you cannot drive within Florence city center. It is a zone of limited traffic (Zona Traffico Limitato, ZTL).

If you are driving into Florence, you can enter the ZTL to unload your luggage and drop off passengers. After which, you will have to exit it immediately and park the car elsewhere, unless your hotel offers parking spots.

If you do this, remember to inform your hotel in advance. This way they can inform the local police of your license plate number and get a temporary permit to enter the ZTL.

Where Do I Park My Car In Florence?

If you drove into Florence, and your hotel doesn’t provide parking (most of them don’t); where do you park?

Well, there are paid parking lots around the city. Parking rates usually range from 1-8 Euros (1-8 USD). They also have daily rates.

Here are some of your options:

1. Below Santa Maria Novella train station : most convenient because it’s the closest to the city center.

2 . Sant’Ambrogio parking lot (below Piazza Ghiberti / Largo Annigoni): 10 minutes walk to the Duomo.

3. Europa Parking lot (Located near the Firenze sud exit on the A1 highway): take buses 23, 33, 71, 81, 82, or 85 to reach the city center. The bus ride takes about 15-20 minutes. Most convenient if you are using the A1 highway to get to Florence. This one is also the cheapest.

And that’s it, 27 instagrammable places in Florence! Florence is an amazingly beautiful city. You can’t turn around without being in awe at some incredible architecture or work of art. And you definitely can’t visit it without getting some sweet shots for the gram!

I hope this guide has been useful in letting you capture your best shots. If you know of any other amazing places that should be on our list, feel free to let us know!

Piazza della Signoria

Piazza Della Signoria is always buzzing with people and activities. And with so many landmark structures around, it is not difficult to see why. You will also find a lot of cafes at the piazza.

The 5.17-meter marble statue of the Biblical hero David is symbolic of Renaissance and Florentine art. It stood for the defense of civil liberties embodied in the Republic of Florence.

San Lorenzo Market, Mercato Centrale and San Lorenzo church

From the Accademia Gallery, head over to the San Lorenzo Market or Mercato Centrale

This popular market in Florence is made up of two separate areas – an outdoor space lining the surrounding streets of the large Mercato Centrale building called the San Lorenzo market. You can buy leather goods here, including souvenirs.

San Lorenzo Market

The indoor market section is known as Mercato Centrale or Central Market and this is a great spot to sit for a nice meal. Try cheeses and cured meats and stop for a snack at Nerbone.

Note that this area, along with the Galleria dell’Accademia is located close to the Duomo, and is best explored on foot. The locality may not look very posh and chic, but the attractions including the church of San Lorenzo in the Medici neighborhood make for a nice visit and a stroll after lunch.

San Marco Church

After the market, head over to the 13th century Church of San Marco. Housed inside the church is the funerary chapel of St. Antony, which is considered to be Giambologna’s main architectural work, and is worth checking out.

San Marco Church

You will also find a Byzantine mosaic Virgin in prayer from a Rome oratory, which dates back 705 here.

Right outside the church, there is a small piazza. This spot is perfect to cool off with gelato before continuing your sightseeing in Florence.

Ponte Vecchio

Next walk to the Ponte Vecchio bridge. Ponte Vecchio is a medieval arch bridge, built over the Arno River. The bridge itself is considered an important city landmark.

visit florence instagram

The bridge dates back to the 14th century and has survived any floods – thanks to its arch shape. Ponte Vecchio literally means ‘Old Bridge’, and it is notable for the shops that are built on it. You can walk across the bridge and check out the shops!

visit florence instagram

For the best views of the bridge, head over to the nearby Trinita bridge !

Piazzale Michelangelo

Now complete your sightseeing in Florence by soaking in the sunset view from Piazzale Michelangelo.

To get to the viewing platform, you will have to walk from the center and hike/climb a series of steps, but we promise the view is worth all the effort!

View of Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo

AllTrails actually has a hike, from Piazza Duomo – Basilica San Lorenzo – Ponte Vecchio – Piazzale Michelangelo as a 5.1 kilometer (3.16 miles) point-to-point trail.

From Ponte Vecchio to Piazzale Michelanego takes about 16 to 20 minutes, and it is fairly easy to walk down. You will get a flight of stairs to head to the top.

You can climb up the stairs from Piazza San Niccolò. Head uphill and hike up the long flight of stairs to be welcomed to gorgeous views of Florence, bridges, and the Arno River.

visit florence instagram

Or you start at the bottom of Piazza Giuseppe Poggi (located next to the river) to reach Piazzale Michelangelo.

Not into walking? Then hop bus number 13 (from Ponte Niccolò). Cars are also allowed up there.

There are cafes, restaurants, and sightseeing buses available from the Piazzale. You will also find a copy of a statue of David here.

Take the time to enjoy a stroll of the piazza, and then sit down at the steps of the Piazzale for a nice sunset view!

Santa Maria Novella is a beautiful church located near the central train station in Florence. The original complex dates back to the 13th century, and it was later expanded and grew its importance over the centuries.

Santa Maria Novella

The church pulls millions of visitors in a year, and the main reason is the artwork inside and outside. The facade of the Santa Maria Novella is made of marble and is absolutely gorgeous – it oozes Florentine Renaissance charm!

The museum has an entry fee . Housed inside it is artwork of Duccio, Brunelleschi, Botticelli, Masaccio, Filippino Lippi, Giorgio Vasari, Paolo Uccello, Domenico Ghilrlandaio, and Michelangelo.

Santa Croce Area

Finish sightseeing with a stop at the Santa Croce Basilica .

Located at the Piazza di Santa Croce, this Basilica dates back to the 14th century and has artworks of Giotto, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Bronzino, Vasari, and more.

Inside there are the resting places and monumental tombs of the famous such as Michelangelo, Galileo, Dante, Foscolo, and many others.

As part of the entry ticket, you also get access to the Pazzi Chapel, the Last Supper, the Medici Chapel, and the Sala del Pozzo.

How to Visit Florence on Your Own

Florence is often cited as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and for a good reason. With its stunning architecture, incredible art, and delicious food, it’s easy to see why so many people flock to this Tuscan city every year. I have been to Florence a total of 4 times, and it is magical.

If you’re thinking of traveling to Florence on your own, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First and foremost, Florence can be quite crowded, particularly during the peak tourist season (May to September). If you’re looking to avoid the masses, consider traveling outside of these months. October through April are typically less crowded, and those months also offer more reasonable prices on accommodations and activities.

Another thing to keep in mind when traveling to Florence is that it’s a very walkable city. With that said, there are still a few must-see sights that require a bit of traveling by bus or taxi. The Duomo, for example, is located in the center of the city and can be easily reached on foot from most hotels and apartments. However, destinations like the Boboli Gardens and Pitti Palace are located a bit further outside of the city center and require public transportation to reach them.

So let’s chat how to visit Florence on your own!

Here are my top tips for visiting Florence, Italy.

Do people ask if Florence is worth visiting? Absolutely.

Some people may not want to visit Florence several times as I did, but if it’s your first time in Italy, I strongly recommend you visit Rome and Florence. My husband and I have made several road trips from Italy to Florence, which you can read more here:

  • The 411 of Driving in Italy
  • 4 Tuscan Cities to Visit for Couples
  • 7 Romantic Things to do in Tuscany

How Many Days Should You Stay In Florence

I recommend you stay in Florence for a minimum of 3 days, as this will give you a chance to make day trips to other areas in Tuscany. In our past visits, we’ve gone to Siena, Montepulciano, Cinchiano, and San Geminiano. You can also do day trips to places like Lucca and Pisa.

I feel that Florence can be fully explored in one day, but of course, if you have more time, then you won’t be rushed.

Where should you stay in Florence, Italy?

IMG 1893

I love staying in the neighborhood called Santo Spirito. It is well located within walking distance of many tour spots. When I stayed near Pitti Palace, I felt that I was too far away. Additionally, I don’t like to stay near the train station because that is further away from the city center as well. I also stayed close to the Duomo, but I barely slept that night as it was near a bar, and they were very loud!

Some stays in Santo Spirito area:

1.5-day itinerary for Florence, Italy

P.S. You can modify this to be a one-day Florence Itinerary only, as well.

If you arrive in the early afternoon, see if you can check in at your hotel or apartment, at least to leave your luggage. Then you can walk around, admire your area, and get to know it a bit more. Check out the cafes, restaurants, bars and shops.  Next, stop by the local supermarket and get some wine and snacks. If you have some time, head over to Ponte Vecchio for your first stroll on the bridge.

About 1.5 hours before the sun goes down, start heading over to the Piazza Michalaneglo for an amazing sunset and jaw-dropping view of the whole city. You can either take a bus up or walk up. Check out this blog post for more tips.

Now that you’re back, it’s time for either aperitivo or a diner near your hotel. The following day will be a big day, so rest up.

IMG 1341 Original 1

Full day in Florence, Italy

Good morning. First, wake up and have breakfast near your hotel or Airbnb. Try to sit outside and enjoy the scenery and do some people watching, and then take a walk towards the Ponte Vecchio, which is a must. Here you will admire the views and shop some of the fabulous jewelry brands on the bridge.

Ponte Vecchio

The Ponte Vecchio is one of the most iconic landmarks in Florence, and for a good reason. This historic bridge spans the Arno River and is lined with colorful houses and shops. It’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists alike, and there are plenty of things to do here. Whether you’re admiring the views, doing some shopping, or simply taking a picture, a visit to the Ponte Vecchio is a must when traveling to Florence.

Interesting note: The story of the Ponte Vecchio is that it was the only bridge that wasn’t destroyed by the Nazis during WW2. The thinking was that they would want to preserve it as a symbol of Italian engineering and architecture.  The Ponte Vecchio’s two neighboring bridges are the Ponte Santa Trinita and the Ponte alle Grazie .

The stores on the bridge are super cool. There are men’s watches there that I have never seen before with intriguing designs.

ponte vecchio 2022

Luxury shops you’ll find at Ponte Vecchio:

  • Silversmiths
  • Bronze workers
  • Antique dealers

The oldest shop on the bridge is that of the goldsmith Filippo Casoni, which has been there since 1755. Casoni’s great grandson is now the sixth generation of goldsmiths in the family to work from the Ponte Vecchio.

The most expensive brand sold on the bridge is Buccellati.

italy family vacation 158

Buccellati is an Italian luxury jewelry and watchmaking brand founded in 1919 by Mario Buccellati. The brand is best known for its intricate gold designs and exquisite craftsmanship. Today, Buccellati is one of the most prestigious jewelers in the world, with a presence in some of the most exclusive department stores and boutiques around the globe. If you’re traveling to Florence on your own and looking to do some high-end shopping, a visit to Buccellati is a must. Even if you’re not in the market for anything, it’s worth browsing the shop or simply admiring the incredible jewelry on display.

The Ponte Vecchio is also beautiful during sunset but can get more crowded later on, making it hard for that ’gram selfie.

After the stroll, head over to the Uffizi Gallery. It is best that you buy tickets ahead of time. This world-renowned art museum houses some of the most iconic paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance era. If you’re traveling to Florence on your own, a visit to the Uffizi Gallery is a must. Even if you’re not particularly interested in art, it’s still worth browsing the galleries or simply admiring the incredible architecture of the building.

Just be sure to book your tickets in advance and arrive early, as there are often long lines. And don’t forget to dress appropriately – no shorts, tank tops, or hats allowed! Be sure to plan ahead for time, too. How much time do you need to visit the museum?

– 1-2 hours is enough to see the highlights

– 3-4 hours if you want to take your time and explore everything

Prices –

– Tickets cost €20 for adults

– €8 for EU citizens ages 18-25

– Free for children under 18 and EU citizens over 65

Now take a stroll towards the amazing food market. It will take you about 12 minutes, and you will pass by the Duomo on your way there. Stop for a selfie, and then you will be back later after lunch.

Mercato Centrale is one of Florence’s must-visit markets. There are so many kinds of food here, from grass-fed burgers to vegan meals to amazing desserts. Definitely arrive hungry. I feel it’s best to try several things and really enjoy your time here. First walk around to see all the food options, then make your pick. I actually opted for the hamburger last time, and it was delicious. Of course, I had some beer as well.

IMG 2031 1

Tips for visiting the Mercato Centrale:

  • In the past, it was recommended to bring cash in case there were vendors that didn’t take credit cards. But this summer (2022), Italy just passed a law that all vendors must take credit cards, and no minimum charge is required.
  • Bring your own reusable bags if you plan to buy fruit, souvenirs, cheeses, etc.
  • Ask for recipe ideas, as the producers love to share
  • Ask the vendors for their favorite food on the menu and try something new
  • Use the bathroom. You will need to pay to get in unless you have a receipt of an item purchased

Now that your tummy is full, time to walk back to the Duomo area to go inside.

Note: If you plan to go up the Duomo, you may want to hit this up first thing in the morning, as you will need more time. So basically, swap the Uffizi Gallery visit time.

Here’s everything you need to know about visiting the Duomo in Florence:

Construction on the Duomo began in 1296 and was completed in 1436. What is the Duomo made of? The exterior of the Duomo is made of white, pink, and green marble. The interior is decorated with beautiful stained glass windows and intricate sculptures. People love taking photos in front of its big doors.

The first time I went to Florence, in 2003, I had already missed a day of my trip due to bringing the wrong passport to the airport. (I cried for hours that night). So when I finally arrived, I felt I needed to make up time. My old college roommate would be busy until later, so I dropped my bags off at the train station and went straight to the Duomo. I climbed 463 steps to the top of the Duomo – which felt like forever to get up there, but the views were stunning! From the top of the Duomo, you’ll have a 360-degree view of Florence and the surrounding Tuscan hills. It’s truly a breathtaking sight!

General Info about the Duomo:

– Duomo ticket prices: Tickets to enter the Duomo cost 8 euros for adults, 4 euros for students, and children under 6 years old are free. You can also purchase a combo ticket that includes access to the Baptistery, Campanile, and Museum for 18 euros.

– How to get there: The Duomo is located in the heart of Florence, so it’s easy to get to no matter where you’re staying in the city. If you’re taking public transportation, the closest stop is Duomo station.

– What to expect: The Duomo is an impressive sight, both inside and out. Be sure to take some time to admire the exterior before heading inside to see the beautiful ceiling and stained glass windows.

– Insider tips: If you want to avoid the crowds, visit early in the morning or later in the evening. And if you want to get a great view of the city, climb up to the top of the dome!

The Duomo is open daily from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm. The last entry is at 6:30 pm. You can easily spend a few hours in there, depending on what you want to see!

So, now it’s time for gelato and shopping! There are great luxury stores in Florence, and they are more affordable than in the USA. As I write this blog post, the euro is equal to the dollar, making it even cheaper, and you also get 12% VAT back at the airport. Make sure to request this special receipt when making your purchases.

Our family and I loved shopping at Zara, H&M, and this shoe store called SOFT store of the future.

Shopping in Florence Italy

Then head back to your hotel or apartment so you can get dressed for an amazing dinner at Trattoria dall’Oste! If you love meat, order the bisteca fiorentina, and make sure you have wine and dessert. They serve you some prosecco while you wait, but you must make a reservation. Use one of these apps to reserve

  •  Quandoo

Now, take a night stroll and stop by one of the bars or restaurants for a nightcap. I love the bar Volume, as they have different things at night, including comedy shows which can be very funny while drinking wine and not understanding a thing! Or a barber shop band like there was the last time we were there.

The next morning, enjoy another great breakfast and walk around the street shopping. Then it’s time to head out.

Is Florence Italy Worth Visiting: Why You Should or Should Not Visit

affiliate link and privacy policy

If you ask anyone who has been to Florence, Italy, is Florence worth visiting?

They will most likely answer, without a doubt, yes. However, is Florence overhyped and too touristy?

Italy is a bucket list destination for just about everyone , from the iconic canals in Venice to the ancient ruins in Rome and the romantic coastline of Amalfi. It is impossible to see and do everything you want in just a two-week vacation.

So you will have to pick and choose. Should Florence, Italy, make the list of destinations to visit in your itinerary, or should you skip it?

I recently got married in Tuscany and spent 3 blissful weeks exploring and soaking in as much of Italy as we could. We visited Florence twice during our trip.

In this guide, I will break down the question of whether Florence is worth visiting for your vacation to Italy and why you should or should not visit Florence.

⏰ No time to read the entire article?  No worries , I’ve got you covered!

The two things in Florence that make it worth visiting are: 1. Climbing the iconic Duomo for panoramic views of Florence 2. Strolling across the unique and historic Ponte Vecchio bridge

Is Florence, Italy Worth Visiting?

Yes, Florence is worth visiting. It is a city bursting with centuries of rich history, one-of-a-kind art masterpieces, and world-famous architecture. As you walk and wander the streets of Florence, there is magic around every corner. It is hard to explain the feeling you get when visiting this incredible city.

views overlooking Florence, Italy

Florence is known for its stunning architecture, beautiful art and museums, delicious food and wine, and fascinating history.

You can discover famous landmarks such as climbing the Duomo , walking the Ponte Vecchio bridge, and exploring the Uffizi Gallery, as well as lesser-known spots like the Boboli Gardens or the San Lorenzo market.

Florence is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in art, history, culture, or simply experiencing the beauty of Italy. It is unlike any city that I have visited before. Florence is a place that I would love to return to again and again.

Why Florence, Italy is Worth Visiting

If you are planning an epic vacation to Italy, I promise you will hear over and over again from the majority of people you talk to that “Florence is one of my favorite cities in Italy.” That is a subjective statement, and everyone has a different opinion.

However, there has to be some truth in it. What is so great about Florence and why is it worth visiting?

The Art and Culture of Florence

Florence is worth visiting for the art and culture experience alone. The city is an art lover’s paradise. Florence is home to some of the world’s most famous art galleries and masterpieces. It is known as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, which some believe was Europe’s most prosperous cultural period.

There are approximately 70 museums in Florence. The museums highlight the works of influential geniuses like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli, Giotto, Raphael, and many more. If you have the slightest interest in art, this is the place to soak it all in and explore this art and cultural hub to the fullest.

If you only have time for one museum in Florence, a must-visit is the Galleria dell’Accademia . This is where you can find the original statue of Michelangelo’s famous David , among other pieces by Michelangelo, and a large collection of beautiful paintings.

If you have time, other famous museums in Florence that are worth visiting include:

  • Uffizi Gallery: the next most popular museum in Florence
  • Pitti Palace And The Boboli Gardens
  • Palazzo Vecchio
  • Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore

The Stunning Architecture

Art is not just in the museums in Florence. It surrounds you as you walk and discover the streets of this magical city.

From Florence’s city squares that feature magnificent statues and sculptures to the Ponte Vecchio bridge along the Arno River, every corner you turn in the city is pulsating with centuries of art and culture.

Uffizi Gallery

If you are an architecture buff or can appreciate the historic buildings, Florence is one of the best preserved and maintained cities in Europe. The architecture in the city is highly influenced by the Gothic and Renaissance periods.

One of the most famous buildings in Florence is Cathedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore , also known as the Duomo of Florence. The dome structure is one of the largest in the world. You will want to book your tour in advance to see the inside of this stunning church.

✅ You can book a skip the line Florence Duomo with Brunelleschi’s Dome Climb here

Some of the other unique structures and buildings you will want to see in Florence are:

  • Basilica of San Lorenzo
  • Baptistery of St. John
  • Giotto’s Bell Tower
  • Ponte Vecchio
  • Uffizi Gallery

The Delicious Tuscan Cuisine

Probably the thing you are looking forward to the most on your trip to Italy is trying all of the delicious food! And Florence does not disappoint.

There are numerous traditional dishes that are a must-try when visiting Florence. Some of the classic Florence dishes are Bistecca Fiorentina, Tuscan Canapés, Tagliatelle with Porcini and Truffle Mushrooms, and of course, a glass of Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino that will pair nicely with any one of these dishes.

Also, a trip to Florence is not complete without enjoying some gelato. Florence claims to be the birthplace of gelato, so what better excuse do you have to try all of the various yummy flavors?

If you want the best and most authentic gelato, skip the shops with the bright and highly stacked gelato. It looks pretty, but it is filled with preservatives.

Authentic gelato is made only with high-quality products such as 100% Italian whole milk and pasteurized fresh cream, barn eggs, and fresh seasonal fruit.

Florence is a Walkable City

You can walk everywhere in Florence . It is actually, the best and cheapest way to get around and see the city.

The city center is relatively small compared to other major cities in Italy,   and you can walk from one end to another in about 30 minutes. And there are numerous pedestrian-only streets.

Ponte Vecchio bridge in Florence Italy

Florence is unique that you can easily spend a week there or a day trip and still feel like you have seen a decent part of the city. If you are limited on time and only have a day or two, Florence is still worth a visit.

You can see many of the main sights in a day. Whereas if you are in a city like Rome, it is much larger and walking from place to place takes a lot more of your time.

Great Homebase for Visiting Nearby Towns

Florence makes for a great home base to visit other nearby towns and cities. It is a transportation hub, so you will have access to trains, buses, and tours to explore the region and the gorgeous countryside.

Including, San Gimignano, Siena, Pisa, Lucca, the Saturnia hot springs , Cinque Terre, and even Rome is only an hour and a half by high-speed train.

If you prefer not to take public transportation, the other option would be to book a tour. There are numerous fantastic tours that depart from Florence.

Shopping in Florence

Florence is also worth visiting for all of the amazing shopping! Come prepared with some extra space in your luggage, because I promise you will be bringing some clothes and items home with you. There are numerous trendy stores that I found to be pretty affordable.

Via de’ Tornabuoni is the fashion center of the city and the popular shopping street in Florence. Here you will find all the luxury brands , high-end boutiques, and jewelers . There is Gucci, Versace, Prada, and Tiffany & Co to name a few.

leather goods at the San Lorenzo Market

Another great place to do some shopping for souvenirs is the San Lorenzo market. The open-air market is best known for its   leather goods . For centuries, Florence has been famous for its high-quality leather.

You will find everything from leather gloves to belts, jackets, wallets, and bags. Even if you do not plan on buying anything, it is still worth your time to walk through the bustling and vibrant market.

Jaw-Dropping Views

There are not too many cities that offer as many breathtaking views as Florence does. A must is to climb the 463 steps of the Duomo for expansive views of the city. Climbing the ancient steps of the Dumo is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you will not regret.

⭐Tip: You will need tickets to climb the Duomo in advance. There are often long lines of visitors waiting to get in. Book your skip-the-line tickets for the Duomo here.

The Piazzale Michelangelo Square offers an unbelievable view overlooking the city. It is a little bit of a trek to get up the steep hill to the viewpoint.

However, it is well worth the effort to get this remarkable 360-degree view of Florence and the surrounding area. A lot of people come here at sunset, but honestly, at any time of the day, you are going to get spectacular views.

Rooftop views from Sesto on Arno Rooftop Bar

Make sure to end your day with a cocktail at sunset on a rooftop bar that features panoramic views of the city. There are many to choose from, but we decided to go to SE·STO on Arno Rooftop Bar. It is located at the top of the Westin hotel.

Why You Should Not Visit Florence, Italy

While there are many good reasons to visit Florence, there are a few reasons why some people might not want to visit the city. Here are a few potential drawbacks to consider:

The Overwhelming Crowds

Florence may sound too good to be true, so you may be wondering if there are any reasons you would not want to visit. Most likely, the main reason someone would not want to visit Florence is the abundance of crowds , especially during peak season.

crowds in Florence Italy in october

No matter the time of year, Florence is always crowded. It is a very popular destination to visit. We visited in the off-season, and the city still felt overwhelmed with people. The crowds can make it difficult to fully enjoy some of the city’s attractions and could also lead to long lines and wait times.

That is why I recommend purchasing skip-the-line tickets, it is a little extra cost, but so worth it to not have to waste time standing in long lines. If you are traveling in the summer, make sure to book your tickets to museums and other main attractions ASAP.

Traveling in the Summer

You may think twice about visiting Florence if you are traveling to Italy in the summer. It is Italy’s busiest tourist season of the year. So expect massive lines outside of the main sights and long wait times at a restaurant , and accommodations are typically more expensive than the rest of the year.

Besides being Italy’s busiest time of year, it is also the hottest. Summers in Florence can be quite hot and humid. The summer temperatures in Florence hit the high 80s and 90s , which is not ideal when climbing the 463 steps of the Duomo.

Florence Can Be Expensive

Florence is not a destination where you can “wing it” while you are there. You need to do some planning beforehand because otherwise, you will probably be paying premium prices for accommodations and miss out on tickets for the top Florence attractions.

Depending on your plans in Florence, it can seem like an expensive city to visit. All of the tours for museums and churches can quickly add up. Also, prices for accommodation and food tend to be higher in the city center near the Duomo and other popular tourist areas.

However, I think Florence is more affordable than people realize. It can be possible to visit Florence on a budget by being strategic with accommodation and food choices, and by taking advantage of free or low-cost activities. Also, Florence is cheaper than other major Italian cities like Rome and Milan.

Is Florence Too Touristy

Like most of the popular and well-known cities in Italy, Florence attracts a lot of tourists throughout the year. It is not a hidden gem or an off-the-beaten path location by any means.

visit florence instagram

You should expect there to be crowds and plenty of other tourists visiting at the same time as you , especially at those main sights like the Galleria dell’Accademia and Palazzo Vecchio.

However, I would not consider Florence to be a tourist trap or a touristy location to visit. There is still so much authenticity throughout the city. You just have to go to the right places to find it.

How Many Days Should You Spend in Florence?

You should try and spend at least three days in Florence. There is so much to see and do in this incredible city, you could easily spend a week or more here. Three days is the perfect amount of time to see all of the main sights in the city without feeling like you are rushing and trying to cram everything into one day.

If you have more time to spare, four to five days in Florence will allow you to take your time to explore more off the beaten path locations.

In Conclusion: Is Florence Worth Visiting

Is Florence overhyped or is Florence worth visiting? While there may be some potential drawbacks, in my opinion, Florence is still absolutely worth a visit. The beauty and rich culture of the city of Florence is unmatched. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Florence is fairly cheap to visit on a budget as there are quite a few things to do that don’t cost too much. If you’re looking for somewhere to eat, it’s best to walk away from the centre in order to find cheaper places.
