Carol’s Journey (El Viaje de Carol) | Review

Triumph of the Young

' src=

Charming Spanish film will touch your heart.

What every documentary special on the history channel has taught us about war is that the ultimate tragedies are the victims who are torn away from their loved-ones. Spanish director Imanol Uribe’s Carol’s Journey (Spanish title: El Viaje de Carol) is a portrait of human’s psychological defiance to assimilate to ideals of another way of thinking under the conditions of a civil war Spain. Told through the eyes of a young pre-teen girl we see how the pleasures of growing up are confronted by dealing with issues that no child should have to address.

Those around Carol keep telling her that she is ‘stubborn like her mother’. Used to the lifestyle associated to the Statue of Liberty the young protagonist of the film is no push over and her rebellious nature helps her adapt quickly to the new instability found in moving to a new home which is multiplied by the fact that she had to cross the Atlantic in order to find her new residence. Making new friends and a new way of life is tough enough but having to deal with the death of her mother and yearning for the return of her American solider father makes her growing up not the easiest of tasks. She finds support from the adults in her entourage but her real support system comes from a band of misfit boys equally of the same-age group. The boys who challenges begin and end with the word fairy are tough little mischievous characters-she learns to protect herself by emulating some of their behaviours. A puppy-love story develops between her and one of the boys- a miniature version of Jean-Marc Barr in Besson’s Le Grand Bleu. The more touching part comes from her most trusted ally-her mother’s former school-teacher and close sage friend who helps the little girl to better deal with the lose of her mother by carrying on the letter writing of her deceased mother to her separated by war husband. Uribe’s film gives a secondary status to the civil war- the protagonist is more affected by things that she can comes physically come to grips with and not the abstract ones such as the daily worry of the war which is nicely touched upon with a scene where the grandfather shows the position of the allied and enemy forces on a map of Spain using bottle caps of different colours to represent the current outlook.

Carol’s Journey is the sort of picture that Oscar-craving producers love to make-with a lush photography and film score add a romanticized feel to the countryside and rural village visuals that paint the picture. Like the fate of all pictures that play with similar emotionally toned themes of love and loss we have a drama that milks out an ending that goes for a full sentimental effect, however the poised screen presence and performance of this beautiful little girl with big eyes (reminded me another girl with big eyes in The Professional) might have the a better impact than the film’s conclusive details. I think her future trajectory in film might just follow a path a la Portman.

“Carol’s Journey” follows a 12-year-old girl’s discovery of her family roots and her own inner spunk during the late 1930s political upheaval in Spain. Too intimate to qualify as an epic, yet too often dramatically superficial for a character study, pic will work best for fans of lush period coming-of-age mellers. Item should travel to select theatrical destinations in Spanish-speaking territories before arriving at eventful ancillary.

Accompanying her mother Aurora (Maria Barranco) from New York, pre-teen Carol (Clara Lago) comes to rural Spain for the first time during the period of uncertainty just prior to Nationalist General Francisco Franco’s ascendancy to power in 1939. The daughter of a Spanish mother and an absent American father serving as an International Brigade pilot, Carol feels awkward at first in her new environment. But under the gentle influence of her grandfather Amalio (Alvaro de Luna) and Aurora’s favorite teacher from her childhood, Maruja (Rosa Maria Sarda), the child soon feels more comfortable.

Meanwhile, Aurora is growing apart from her husband, and she may or may not carry a torch for Adrian (Carmelo Gomez), who married her sister — even though she “bores him to tears.” Plus, Aurora’s dying of an unspecified illness, and her demise half-hour of so in signals big changes for Carol. These include the ever-encroaching civil unrest in the form of the reptilian local political bully Alfonso (Alberto Jiminez) and the awakening of adolescent feelings toward Tomiche (Juan Jose Ballesta).

When Carol’s father returns unexpectedly, the resulting tensions set a chain of events in motion that take a toll in human life.

Straying somewhat afield of the rough-and-tumble noir genre pieces on which he made his name (“Numbered Days,” “Running Out of Time”), Imanol Uribe slows things down considerably to a pace best described as stately. While this may suit author Angel Garcia Roldan’s plot-packed adaptation of his own novel, over time, this measured approach leaches pic of tension. So too the story’s narrative sweep comes at the expense of any significant dramatic depth or character development: The sheer number of plot strands may work well on the page, but pic suffers when focus shifts from young people to a national conflict which in the end is only hinted at, never shown.

Adult vet thesps, many of whom have appeared in multiple Uribe pics, are fine if too often subdued. Freshest perfs come from Lago and Ballesta, each of whom has a natural ease with the camera and who play very well off each other.

Tech package is crisp and handsome, though Bingen Mendizabal’s syrupy, intrusive score is a distraction. Pic was lensed in Cantabria, Galicia and Portugal.

Invincible's most controversial character is officially here: what happens next with anissa.

The arrival of Anissa in Invincible could set up multiple stories for Invincible season 3, as well as the original comic's most controversial plot.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for the original Invincible comics and Invincible Season 2 Episode 7, "I'm Not Going Anywhere," now streaming on Prime Video

  • Anissa in Invincible Season 2 is a pivotal character forcing Mark to confront Viltrumite danger.
  • Anissa's comic book controversial plot twist may not be adapted in the animated series.
  • Anissa's arrival hints at impending cosmic battles and potential changes to her character.

The following article contains mentions of sexual assault that occurred in the original Invincible comic book series.

Invincible season 2 has formally introduced Anissa, a Vilturimte warrior who eventually became the original comic's most controversial character. Invincible has been an interesting adaptation to watch unfold on Prime Video, with the animated show taking many cues from the original comics. However, there have been several tweaks to the show, ranging from shifting cultural norms to seemingly doomed characters like Shrinking Rae surviving Invincible . This means any important upcoming character from the comic could easily be reinvented for the animated show, potentially reworking some of the comics' more horrifying characters and concepts into something more palatable to modern audiences.

One of the characters who could most benefit from that tweaked approach is Anissa. Played by Shantel VanSanten, Anissa is a dangerous but calm Viltrumite who plays a pivotal role in forcing Invincible to confront the dangers posed by the expansive Viltrumite Empire (as well as leading directly to the heartbreaking break-up between Mark and his girlfriend, Amber .) Anissa's arrival serves as a portent of upcoming battles likely to unfold during season 3 of the animated superhero series. However, her presence in Invincible could also be quietly setting up one of the original story's most controversial and shocking plot turns.

Invincible Is Proving Exactly Why Those Homelander & Omni-Man Comparisons Never Made Sense

Who anissa is in invincible season 2 (& what she wants), a good reminder of how dangerous viltrumites are.

Invincible season 2 has formally debuted Anissa , who is one of the most dangerous and controversial characters from the original comic book series of the same name. Anissa makes her presence known in Invincible by interrupting a date between Mark and Amber. Threatening Amber's life if he doesn't have a conversation with her, Mark is forced to don his costume and confront his fellow Viltrumite. Anissa is revealed to be an advance scout of the Empire, sent to check on Mark's progress in preparing Earth for their arrival. Anissa is critical of humanity but surprisingly committed to their potential survival.

Anissa helps Mark save numerous humans during a giant monster attack, but quickly tries to force Mark to admit humanity needs the Viltrumite rule. When Mark resists, Anissa showcases her combat skills and handily defeats Mark in a battle. Despite Mark's abilities, Anissa is never at risk of losing their fight. The only reason Mark survives the fight is because she spares his life. Anissa leaves the planet to report back to General Kregg about Mark's resistance, but she's quickly distracted by Allen the Alien . The episode serves as a good introduction of Anissa and how dangerous she can be.

Why Anissa Is So Controversial In The Invincible Comics

Invincible 's most controversial storyline, explained.

Anissa is one of the most important Viltrumites in the Invincible comic , playing an important role in the original story. While she's an important player in the comics' central conflict, her biggest importance comes later. After the Viltrumite War storyline, Anissa briefly relocated to Earth and became a surprising potential love interest for Mark. However, her attraction to Mark led to the comic's most controversial plot beat. Tasked with replenishing the Viltrumite population after the destruction of their home world, Anissa decided she would only procreate with Mark . Despite Mark's refusal and resistance, Anissa attacked him and sexually assaulted him.

Anissa's rape of Mark is a major turning point in the comic . It leaves Mark with PTSD as he initially struggles to deal with the trauma of the event. His romantic relationship with Eve was briefly jeopardized when he told her the truth, with Eve initially unsure if Mark had been a willing participant in the act before realizing the impact the event had on Mark and working to help him through the pain. Anissa was impregnated after this encounter, leading to unexpected the birth of Invincible's son Markus (in contrast to Terra, the daughter Mark consensually had with Eve.)

1 Cut Invincible Season 2 Character Is Bad News For Your Crossover Hopes

Invincible's tv story may not adapt that anissa & mark moment, how invincible could tweak anissa as a character.

There's reason to believe that Anissa's appearance in Invincible doesn't necessarily mean the show will feature an adaption of her sexual assault against Mark. The event was highly controversial when it happened in the original series. The way the comic dealt with this was also met with incredibly mixed results. Anissa fell in love with a human during a five-year time-skip that followed her assault of Mark, and eventually became a defender of Earth by the end of the series. The character refused to regret or accept accountability for her actions , making it hard to accept her redemption given the severity of her crime.

Anissa is already similar to her original incarnation, but the character seems more primed to understand and accept humanity than she did in the original comic. "I'm Not Going Anywhere" could set up her eventual romance with a human as part of turning the character into a more sympathetic figure in the story. It seems unlikely that the series would repeat Anissa's crimes . The show could possibly cut this subplot entirely, or potentially alter her relationship with Mark to make him receptive to her advances. It would be surprising to see the Invincible show directly adapt this turn of events.

What Anissa's Arrival Means For Invincible Season 3

The viltrumite war is coming.

The arrival of Anissa serves as a reminder to Mark that the Vilturmites are more dangerous than any other threat that Invincible has put against Mark. Anissa's presence in Invincible suggests that the show is steadily approaching the Viltrumite War storyline from the original comics. Anissa could be tweaked a bit from the original story , reducing some of her vicious acts while turning the Viltruite into a more sympathetic character. A likely result of that change would be removing her assault of Mark, potentially cutting it out entirely. This could have a serious impact on the direction of the story.

Anissa will likely still be a deadly foe to the heroes of Earth and their intergalactic allies in immediate upcoming stories. While she may eventually be willing to fight and even die for Earth in the final stretch of the comics, she's clearly far from that place in the current point of the story. Anissa's arrival in Invincible moves the show closer to cosmic battles that endanger the entire universe. It'll be interesting to see how Invincible uses the character going forward, and if they make any serious changes to the character ahead of her most well-known (and controversial) actions.

Based on the comic book character by Robert Kirkman, Invincible follows Mark Grayson,  a seventeen-year-old who leads a seemingly average life save for the fact that he lives behind the shadow of his superhero father, Omni-Man. Mark goes on to develop superhuman abilities, but he must also learn that his father's legacy isn't as glitzy and glamorous as he's been led to believe.

'Vanderpump Villa': Everything We Know So Far About Lisa Vanderpump's New Reality Show

After 'Vanderpump Rules', there is another service-led reality show to watch next.

Quick Links

Does 'vanderpump villa' have a release date, is there a trailer for 'vanderpump villa', what is 'vanderpump villa' about, who is starring in 'vanderpump villa', who is making 'vanderpump villa', where was 'vanderpump villa' filmed.

After Scandoval, Vanderpump Rules Season 11 is keeping viewers hooked as Ariana Madix moves on with a new boyfriend and the rest of the group continues to have a hard time forgiving Tom Sandoval . Yet, the reality TV lead, Lisa Vanderpump , isn't just focused on keeping the team at peace. She is currently busy promoting another reality show, Vanderpump Villa , which will be focused on the staff at a French château, as they calibrate serving guests and dealing with work colleagues 24/7.

In case you are looking forward to watching this upcoming series or want to invest in more unhinged reality TV, here is everything we know so far about this new project.

Vanderpump Villa will be out soon, with its first three episodes arriving in the US through Hulu on April 1, 2024 . The remaining seven will land on a weekly basis via the streaming service. Viewers in the UK and Canada can also watch the reality show through Disney +. To stay tuned to all the latest episodes, check out the release schedule below.

Watch on Hulu

Yes, there is! On March 6, 2024, Hulu unveiled the official trailer for their upcoming reality series, and by the looks of it, there will be a lot of parties, guest services, workplace fights, and intense drama. The clip starts off with Lisa letting the staff know that the guests will be arriving the next day at the luxurious château in France, where they are expected to indulge in stellar food and hospitality. With the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum observing their every move, the team must be focused on providing the best service they can while also navigating the difficulties of living with their co-workers. As some of the footage in the trailer shows the group enjoying the pool, having a few too many drinks, and hooking up in between shifts, managing their personal lives on top of the professional won't be an easy task to follow.

Here is the official logline for Vanderpump Villa provided by Hulu:

“From firework-filled proposals and opulent events at the chateau to unbelievable excursions and outrageous confrontations in the French countryside, each day at the Chateau brings nonstop heartfelt, humorous, and heated moments, from staff and guests alike. All the while, Lisa evaluates whether this is the team to make her ‘pop up’ experience a permanent reality and add to her ever-growing empire.”

Aside from Vanderpump's occasional appearance here and there, the main cast will be filled with hand-selected professionals in their respective fields. In December 2023, Hulu revealed who are the participants in the series .

Andre Mitchell is a mixologist, and he began his trajectory in the service industry at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse after an injury cost him his athletic scholarship at Texas State. In the reality show, he will be partnering up with Chauntel "Telly" Hall , another mixologist with 12 years' experience.

Executive chef Anthony Bar will look after the kitchen at the villa, alongside his sous chef Caroline Byl . Although their work styles might be different, with Bar being a by-the-books type and Byl a more improvisational cook, they are able to work well together and deliver some fine dishes.

Emily Kovacs has done it all in terms of jobs, and her stellar work ethic will be a bonus as a housekeeper. She will be working with Grace Cottrell , another housekeeper who isn't afraid to get her hands dirty on the job.

After working at one of Vegas' most sought-after restaurants, Marciano Brunette will be the lead server at the château. He will be managing Hannah Fouch and Priscila Ferrari , two servers who will be actively involved in a lot of the after-work onscreen portion of the show.

Stephen Alsvig will be an event coordinator, and he has already worked alongside Marciano and Hannah before the show and is well aware of how this pairing will play out. His co-worker on the team is Gabriella Sanon , who will use her expertise in hosting luxurious events during her time at the villa while also eyeing the possibility of finding love.

Last but not least, Eric Funderwhite will be the château manager. After years overlooking big teams for A-list clientele, he is ready to take on the challenge of leading what could potentially become the core group of staff at the villa.

Lisa Vanderpump is no stranger to being on reality TV and producing shows within this genre. She is currently an executive producer and stars in Vanderpump Rules , Overserved , Vanderpump Dogs , and Pooch Perfect , all reality shows for different networks and streaming services. Aside from being a TV personality, she is also a businesswoman and looks after four restaurants and the Vanderpump Cocktail Garden in Vegas alongside her longtime husband, Ken Todd . Ahead of the show's streaming release, Vanderpump shared information about the casting process for the Hulu original in an interview with TV Insider :

“It was very, very carefully thought out. I needed some people that I knew I could really rely on. However, this cast also gave Lisa some trouble at times. “I think you have to manage people a lot more when you’re living with them and you can’t replace people,” she continues. “I’m not saying we didn’t, but you’ll have to see the show, too. It was quite difficult when you’ve got young people all living together.”

According to Hulu, both Bunim/Murray Productions and Entertainment 360 are credited as producers of the reality show.

Vanderpump Villa is set at the Château Rosabelle (also known as Château St. Joseph), located in the South of France. This L-shaped castle was built in 1879 and is now a luxurious guest spot for anyone who wants to book a stay or host a high-end event (a wedding perhaps).
