A masterful showcase.

It has been said that playing well at Riviera can lead to success at Augusta National. While winning at one course doesn’t necessarily mean guaranteed success at the other, putting together a solid four rounds in Los Angeles in February can be a barometer for what’s to come in April. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is just the latest example of this theory.

My Eight-Year Golf Journey: How it Shapes My Motivation for My Future

As a TGR Learning Lab member, I had the honor of attending the 2024 Genesis Invitational, hosted by Tiger Woods. It was a time of opportunity, and I’m very thankful to represent the programs TGR Foundation has to offer. I first attended in 2019 and was extremely delighted to have been invited back. It felt like a reunion. I went with other TGR Learning Lab members to experience the tournament as spectators, take a glimpse behind the scenes, and explore possible careers.

Hideki’s day

A perfect round vaulted Hideki Matsuyama to a three-shot victory at The Riviera Country Club in the 2024 Genesis Invitational. Nine birdies on the round propelled the 2021 Masters champion to a final-round 62, one shot off the course record. Matsuyama’s 62 in the final round is the best final round score at Riviera on the PGA TOUR.

Eighteen holes to go

Moving day lived up to its billing Saturday at The Riviera Country Club during the third round of the 2024 Genesis Invitational. Patrick Cantlay continues to hold the lead as he has after each round this week but what was a comfortable cushion has shrunk to two shots. Cantlay’s 14-under-par 199 through 54 holes leads Xander Schauffele and Will Zalatoris, who are tied for second at 12-under.

Cantlay creates a cushion

Patrick Cantlay teed off Round 2 of the 2024 Genesis Invitational with the 18-hole lead. Throughout the afternoon, the Long Beach, Calif. native cushioned his margin on the field, posting the clubhouse lead at 13-under-par 129 after 36-holes. The trio of Jason Day, Luke List and Mackenzie Hughes are tied for second at 8-under, five shots back.

2024 Genesis Invitational leaderboard, scores: Patrick Cantlay will battle Xander Schauffele, Will Zalatoris

Cantlay has led through all three rounds of the genesis invitational.

The third round of the 2024 Genesis Invitational may not have included the theatrics and drama of the first 36 holes, but it finished with the same man sitting atop the leaderboard. Patrick Cantlay at 14 under will head into the final round at Riviera Country Club with a two-stroke lead over Xander Schauffele and Will Zalatoris after shooting 1-under 70 on Saturday.

Cantlay's Moving Day was decidedly different from his first two rounds. Commanding a tournament-record five-stroke lead after 36 holes, the eight-time PGA Tour winner saw pursuer after pursuer throw punch after punch.

Schauffele was the first to make a move as an eagle on the par-5 1st propelled the American's name directly under his Ryder Cup partner. he continued to pester with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 to get within three, but Cantlay held steady.

A birdie from the blade of Cantlay on the par-5 11th moments later extended his lead back to four. There would be ebbs and flows throughout the back nine as runs were made by Harris English and then Zalatoris. English finished the day four back, while both Schauffele and Zalatoris sit at 12 under with some clutch birdies falling near the end of their rounds.

The lead shuffled between three and four strokes for most of the back nine as Cantlay responded with a pitching wedge drawing from right to left to access a tucked pin location on the par-4 13th to set up a successful birdie conversion from 5 feet. He appeared keen on adding to his lead, but instead the edge got trimmed to two for the first time all day when Cantlay made an inexplicable bogey on the par-5 17th and injected new life into this tournament.

The three countrymen will now face off in the final round Sunday with Cantlay and Schauffele occupying the final pair. In unison throughout seemingly every aspect of life from career milestones to PGA Tour victories to even vacations in Napa Valley, Cantlay and Schauffele remain by one another's side. They'll shake hands on the first tee, share laughs and play 18 holes like they do most weeks, only this time the stakes will be higher as a title at the historic Riviera awaits.

1. Patrick Cantlay (-14):  Cantlay's round was not littered the par breakers of his first two, but it was impressive most of the way. Never getting ahead of himself and seeing multiple players go on heaters, Cantlay stuck to his own game. He took what Riviera gave him and stood at a measly even par after a nice save on the short par-4 10th. Two back-nine birdies, including a bonus on the par-4 13th, gave the former FedEx Cup champion a chance to hold a four-stroke lead heading entering Sunday's final round. However, a birdie hole turned into a bogey, and Cantlay's comfortable edge of four shrunk to a sweaty two.

Other contenders

T2.  Xander Schauffele, Will Zalatoris (-12) 4. Luke List (-11) T5. Jason Day, Harris English (-10) T7. J.T. Poston, Hideki Matsuyama, Corey Conners (-8)

Schauffele is now without a bogey in his last 36 holes, and he will need more of the same Sunday given the deficit. Working with his new swing coach, Chris Como, Schauffele is slowly getting more comfortable, and it has showed in a big way the last two days with rounds of 66 and 65. Schauffele and Cantlay last played in the final group together at the 2022 BMW Championship where Cantlay came out on top. Schauffele would love nothing more than to return the favor.

"It's a pretty comfortable pairing for us," said Schauffele. "We play a lot week in and week out and we both love to compete. There's nothing more than we like to do is compete in big events. We've done it a few times in the past and taken shots at each other; it's something we talk about and something we want to keep doing."

Is Zalatoris officially back?

Zalatoris' return to competitive golf following a back injury was -- to put it bluntly -- ugly. Carding a couple rounds in the 80s at the Hero World Challenge and missing the cut badly at the Sony Open, Zalatoris has now found his former quality in California. Torrey Pines allowed his tee-to-green prowess to shine, and Riviera is doing the same. He has always been a player to thrive on more difficult setups (just look at his major championship record), and this two-tournament stretch may be enough to suggest he is all the way back. He ranks fourth in strokes gained tee to green and first in strokes gained approach in vintage Zalatoris fashion.

2024 Genesis Invitational updated odds, picks

  • Patrick Cantlay: 6/5
  • Xander Schauffele: 3-1
  • Will Zalatoris: 4-1
  • Luke List: 14-1
  • Jason Day: 20-1
  • Harris English: 28-1

Cantlay looks in total control and will have the luxury of playing from ahead. A four-stroke lead would have been much nicer, but a plus-money price on the steadiest player of the bunch seems like the right play even though the lead was trimmed to two. Schauffele and Zalatoris will be difficult to skirt past, but Cantlay's well-rounded game should allow him to prevail at a course he's been knocking at the door at for years.

Schauffele and Zalatoris get in the house

The two Americans finish the day at 12 under after matching 65s. Patrick Cantlay is on the 16th green at 15 under and will face 25 feet for birdie. Cantlay will likely two putt and head to the par-5 17th with a good chance to regain a four-stroke lead. Four seems like an awfully lot more than three when it comes to a 54-hole lead.

Schauffele and Zalatoris trying to make a move

Patrick Cantlay tacked on a birdie on 13 to get to 15 under and just knocked in a nice par putt on 14 to remain there. Up ahead, Xander Schauffele and Will Zalatoris both made birdies on the par-3 16th to get within four. They both have real chances to get with three on the par-5 17th. It's a rice between them to get into the final group alongside Cantlay tomorrow. Schauffele has the inside lane since he will finish first.

Another big putt from Cantlay

Our leader connects from 11 feet on the difficult 12th to stay at 14 under after a birdie on the previous hole. Cantlay went from rough to rough and was able to get up-and-down to maintain his four-stroke lead. Despite players throwing some punches, the lead is still four and Cantlay looks steady as ever.

Cantlay salvages par on No. 10

Our leader makes a 5-foot par effort on the short 10th to remain at 13 under and three clear of the field. Xander Schauffele, Harris English, Will Zalatoris and soon to be Jason Day all find themselves at this number. Cantlay needs to pick one up on the par-5 11th to give himself a little more wiggle room before the difficult run of holes from Nos. 12-15.

Here they come!

There are now six players at 9 under and four behind Patrick Cantlay including Will Zalatoris. Back-to-back birdies around the turn have Zalatoris in second place with eight holes to play. Xander Schauffele is at 9 under as well and just reached the surface in two on the par-5 11th. He has roughly 30 feet for his second eagle of the day and to cut Cantlay's lead in half.

Harris English makes his move

He was as long as 200-1 overnight and Harris English now finds himself in a share of second place. He's 5 under on his day and just converted a huge par save on the par-4 12th to keep his momentum rolling. Cantlay looks to be stuck in neutral as the front nine is proving a little more difficult than days past. If English can skirt past this difficult stretch and tack another birdie to his card on the par-5 17th, his 10-under number may look awfully good.

Cantlay drops one

The leader failed to get up-and-down on No. 3 and has since added a par to his scorecard to stand at 13 under. I'll be interested to see how close some of those on the back nine of Riviera can get come the end of the day. Russell Henley is making his way through the most difficult stretch right now at 7 under. If he can get to 9 under, he may be sitting pretty.

List misses chance to cut into lead

It was a beautiful mid iron into the 2nd hole from Luke List but he is unable to convert. Missing his 5-foot birdie bid, List remains at 9 under and five behind Patrick Cantlay as they exchanged birdies on the first.

Cantlay to begin final round

He is paired with Luke List and still holds a five-stroke lead despite some early movement. Cantlay is 0 for 7 in his career converting the 36-hole lead into a victory, but never has he held such a margin.

Schauffele makes big leap on No. 1

That's how you begin Moving Day. Xander Schauffele looks to track down his good pal, Patrick Cantlay, and he gets off to a dream start with an eagle-3 on No. 1. Schauffele is now at 8 under and among the cluster of pursuers in a share of second place five off the pace. Up ahead, Adam Scott is surging.

Scheffler squanders chance on No. 1

You can't be making par on No. 1 and expect to make up ground. Scottie Scheffler makes par after being greenside in two and remains nine off the pace of Patrick Cantlay. We are seeing scores be had with players like Seamus Power getting to 5 under on his round.

Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Thomas

The PGA Tour moves from Phoenix to Los Angeles this week for the 97th edition of The Genesis Invitational, colloquially known as the L.A. Open.

With an “elevated” $20 million purse and tournament host Tiger Woods making his 2023 season debut, it’s easy to see why the field in southern California is stacked this week.

2024 Genesis Invitational: Top 10 power rankings at Riviera

A top 10 power ranking of players set to compete on the PGA Tour at the 2024 Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California.

By Mike Randleman | Feb 12, 2024

The Genesis Invitational - Riviera Country Club

He won’t be featured in this week’s power ranking, but the story this week at the Genesis Invitational is the competitive return of Tiger Woods.

We’ve had a lot of these kinds of moments over the years as Tiger’s body continues to betray him. Yet, the determined champion keeps grinding his way back.

This will be the first time Woods has teed it up in an official event since the 2023 Masters, where he withdrew after making the cut. Woods did play four rounds at his Hero World Challenge exhibition in December, where he showed glimpses of his former self and beat Wyndham Clark and Will Zalatoris.

He’ll look to make the 36-hole cut of top 50 and ties at this 70-player event.

Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, is the host this week. The Los Angeles-adjacent course is one of golf’s famed venues.

Riviera is a George C. Thomas Jr. and William P. Bell design that opened in 1926. It currently measures 7,322 yards for a par 71.

The course is known for its relatively distinctive Kikuyu grass, a sticky surface that Aussie players, for example, are more used to. The greens are poa annua, a bumpy surface common on the West Coast swing like at Torrey Pines and Pebble Beach.

The weather forecast for the week looks to be dry and cool with temperatures in the upper 40s to low 60s Fahrenheit. The wind looks moderate and shouldn’t get into double digits miles per hour much. The Los Angeles area has received heavy rain in recent weeks, so it will be interesting to see if the grounds crew can dial up the green speeds we’re used to seeing, or if it will be a softer test.

Regardless of conditions, it’s hard to fake it around the famed Riviera Country Club. Let’s check out the 10 with the best chance to win at “Hogan’s Alley."

Genesis Invitational: Hideki Matsuyama's final-round 62 snatches glory at Riviera Country Club

Former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama claimed his ninth PGA Tour title as he became the first player in the history of the Genesis Invitational to card 62 in the final round at Riviera Country Club; watch the PGA Tour and more of the best golf in 2024 live on Sky Sports

Highlights of the final round of the Genesis Invitational from Riviera Country Club thumb

Hideki Matsuyama fired a stunning nine-under-par final round to emerge from the chasing pack and clinch victory at the Genesis Invitational on Sunday.

The Japanese golfer had begun the day lying tied for seventh and six shots back on overnight leader Patrick Cantlay but produced a flawless performance, which included nine birdies, to become the first player in tournament history to card 62 or better in the final round at Riviera Country Club.

Former Masters champion Matsuyama's round took him to 17-under-par for the tournament and saw him finish three shots clear of runner-ups Will Zalatoris and Luke List, while Cantlay suffered a nightmare Sunday after carding a 72 which dropped him into a tie for fourth.

Along with becoming the first Japanese player to triumph at this venue, it marked the 31-year-old's first tournament success since the Sony Open in Hawaii over two years ago and he is eager to kick on ahead of next month's The Players Championship and the return to Augusta National in April.

"This is my first top 10 since the last Players...so hopefully I can keep that momentum going," Matsuyama said.

"I think it's really important for me to keep this momentum, especially going to Augusta, so hopefully I can keep that,"

Chasing a ninth tournament victory on the PGA Tour, Matsuyama, who carded 69 and a pair of 68s in the first three rounds, could hardly have asked for a better start to the day with birdies on the first three holes followed by making par on the rest of the front nine.

Hideki Matsuyama's PGA Tour wins

He opened the back nine with another three birdies in the row, and closed out his round in exactly the same manner which vaulted him to the top of the leaderboard.

Matsuyama still had to wait for the final groups to complete their rounds before he could celebrate, but it proved to be an unassailable lead as he finally put a difficult 2023 where he was hampered by a back injury to rest.

"Ever since that injury, I was worried every week something bad might happen to my back," Matsuyama said. "But this week I had no issues, I played without any worries, so that really helped too.

"I wasn't striking the ball really well, but my chipping and putting was working a lot this week. That really helped."

Elsewhere, Tommy Fleetwood secured a top-10 finish thanks to a final round of 67 which saw him finish on eight-under for the tournament, while Rory McIlroy's 70 saw him finish as part of a group of seven tied for 24th.

McIlroy had endured a difficult start to the weekend at Riviera Country Club after opening with a three-over round of 74, but shot 66 and 69 in rounds two and three respectively and believes his game is not far off where he wants it to be.

"I'm close," McIlroy said. "I'm not quite where I want to be, but it's one of these courses where precision is so important and putting your ball in the right areas.

"If you're just slightly off your weaknesses sort of get magnified this week."

J.t. poston has his own 'scottie' good-luck charm among first-round takeaways from the 2024 rbc heritage, share this article.

Another week, another signature event on the PGA Tour.

The first round of the 2024 RBC Heritage is in the books, and numerous players took advantage of softer conditions at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, meaning birdies were aplenty on Thursday.

J.T. Poston holds the solo lead, and he has Scottie (no, not that one) to thank. Meanwhile, the Masters champion got off to a slow-ish start, but he finished strong after grinding through the middle of his round.

And in between, there are plenty of players crowding the top of the leaderboard with no major separation after 18 holes of play.

Here’s what you need to know from the opening round of the 2024 RBC Heritage:

J.T. Poston also has a Scottie connection

There’s another important Scottie at Harbour Town this week. Katherine “Scottie” Poston, J.T. Poston’s daughter, who was born March 20, is with Poston for the first time since she was born. Along with wife Kelly, the Postons are off to a great start on Hilton Head Island.

Poston opened in 8-under 63 on Thursday to take the solo lead at the RBC Heritage. The 63 is the fifth time Poston has opened in 63 during a Tour event since the 2016-17 season, tied with Jordan Spieth for the most during that span. He had nine birdies and a lone blemish on the card to complete a stellar opening round.

“Maybe that has something to do with it. Maybe she’s a good luck charm,” Poston said of his daughter. “It’s been great. It’s definitely an adjustment. I think my wife and I were figuring it out. My mom is here. She’s helping us out, too. So we’ve got plenty of help. We’re just kind of figuring it out. But it’s good to have them here and sort of takes away the pressure of — I’m not worrying about golf when I’m at home. I’m trying to change diapers and take care of her.”

In the last five years at the RBC Heritage, Poston has finished in the top 10 three times while missing the cut in 2021 and 2023.

His 8-under start has opened up a two-shot lead on Seamus Power and Collin Morikawa.

He said the tournament is one he has circled on the calendar at the beginning of every year because he enjoys Harbour Town so much. Even with the extra responsibilities off the course, Poston is focused on playing strong golf on it. And he had no issues with that Thursday.

“My wife has been great,” Poston said, “She knows this is just how it is. We have to spend some time on the golf course. I’ve got to work on my game. I’ve got to stay sharp. She’s been awesome giving me the time to do that, and I’m not taking it for granted. I’m trying to be productive and get back home when I can help.”

Austin Eckroat as a patron

2024 RBC Heritage

As Austin Eckroat explains it, he was struggling with “everything” last week at Augusta National, resulting in him missing the cut.

“I came off a really good stretch, and all of a sudden I couldn’t hit the golf ball,” he said. “It’s never far away from good golf, but it’s also — you’re never that far away from struggling a little bit.”

Eckroat didn’t touch a golf club on the weekend, instead taking a spot outside the ropes as a patron on Saturday at Augusta National to get away a bit and have a different experience.

And it paid off. Eckroat’s refocused approach resulted in an opening 5-under 66 on Thursday. The winner of the Cognizant Classic earlier this season had six birdies and a lone bogey, and he said his weekend refresh contributed to the quick start.

“It was honestly a really enjoyable weekend to go and watch the Masters,” Eckroat said. “I had never done it and tried to take some notes on some guys playing well. Sunday I watched at home and then ended up driving over here and took it easy.

“I went and watched Amen Corner. That was a really cool area. I wanted to see Tiger at least hit one shot, so I watched Tiger hit his tee ball on 10 and then I just hung out on 13. We had a good spot where we could see the second shots, and it was a really cool spot.”

Sahith Theegala's learning experience

2024 RBC Heritage

Theegala wants to play every week on the PGA Tour. It irritates him when he’s off because he still watches golf on TV and wonders why he isn’t in the field. But he knows that’s not possible.

He went into this year with a goal of building a smarter schedule to handle the signature events and majors better. And thus far, he feels as if it is paying off.

Theegala is in the group of players at 5 under and three back of Poston. He fired a bogey-free 66 on Thursday coming off a T-45 at the Masters last week.

“I haven’t played quite as much, and my body is thanking me,” Theegala said. “I feel like I have more energy for the bigger events, which is awesome. It’s really worked out well at the start of the year.

“I joke with my buddies all the time. I would always say I’m playing every event I get into, half-jokingly, but I was like, I’m not missing a Tour event. We’ve grinded our whole lives to get here and now I’m just going to be skipping a bunch of events. It feels weird to take it off, but I see the benefit in doing so. That’s probably been the number one answer when I’ve asked guys that have played out here for a long time, what’s their secret to the longevity. It’s really not pushing it.”

Scheffler finishes strong

2024 RBC Heritage

Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth were paired together for the first round of the RBC Heritage, and through five holes, Spieth was 4 under and Scheffler was 1 over. By day’s end, Scheffler nicked his fellow Longhorn and Dallas resident by a shot.

Scheffler’s incredible consistency again showed Thursday, as he opened in 2-under 69, just four days removed from his second Masters victory. Scheffler didn’t get to Harbour Town until later in the week and played only nine holes on the back side during the pro-am portion of his warm-up. Yet even after an early shank on a bunker shot that resulted in a double, Scheffler settled in and birdied Nos. 16-17 to card 2 under.

“It would have felt better if I got off to a better start, but I tried to give myself a little bit of grace there, but I got pretty frustrated towards the middle of the round because I was playing good, felt like I was hitting good putts, and my speed was maybe a touch off,” Scheffler said. “I think I was maybe too settled down to start the day. I wasn’t quite into the competition. I think maybe it was a bit of fatigue, whatever it was. But I felt like I was still kind of getting adjusted to the golf course.”

Scheffler made birdie on the par-5 second before the double on the third. He carded the second of his four birdies on the par-3 seventh and then had eight straight pars before his consecutive birdies.

In his last four starts, Scheffler has three wins and a T-2. And in that T-2, Scheffler was a couple putts away from forcing a playoff or even winning outright. He mentioned he didn’t get as much work in on the greens at Harbour Town this week, but who can blame him? He has plenty of things going on in his life, including his first child being born in the coming weeks, as well.

“I think sometimes that frustration from not playing my best I think kind of helps me focus sometimes,” Scheffler said. “You can use that as good energy and you can use that as bad energy, so I tried to use it as best I could for the good stuff today.”

Collin Morikawa continues Masters momentum

2024 RBC Heritage

Up until last week, Collin Morikawa was searching for his game. Yet for the second straight week, he looks like the player who won two major championships.

Morikawa is two shots back after an opening 65 that included seven birdies and one bogey. And a week after a T-3 at the Masters, Morikawa is in great position after the opening 18 holes at Harbour Town.

“Especially the way I’ve been playing, you never know how it’s going to be. But when you find this little rhythm and you find this kind of — just pathway, just to play golf, it’s very simple. Sometimes when you’re playing bad, you look back and you wonder why it can’t be that simple.”

Following world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler ’s dominating win at The Masters for his second green jacket and third PGA Tour title in 2024, the top golfers head about 140 miles Southeast to Hilton Head Island for the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town. Scheffler is right back on the tee as prohibitive betting favorite for a Signature Event at Harbour Town Golf Links. The tournament and $20 million purse drew an elite field for the second straight year, and note that this is a no cut event with all golfers playing 72 holes. The field includes just 69 players and all but two of the top-30 in the Official World Golf Rankings (Matsuyama and Hovland out).

Betting favorites and top players continue to take a bulk of the betting action when wagering to win, and bettors also include many of those players in other types of bets like top finishing position (top 5, 10, 20) and other prop bets like Round 1 birdies or better. Most players have an over/under of 4.5 for birdies or better with different odds. For example, FanDuel Ambassador and 2022 Heritage champion Jordan Spieth is -150 for under 4.5 birdies or better, and +105 for over . The 2023 Heritage winner of the plaid jacket who beat Spieth in a playoff was Matt Fitzpatrick , who is -140 for under 4.5 birdies or better and +100 for over . The two tournament favorites, Scottie Scheffler is -175 to go over 4.5 birdies or better in Round 1 while Rory McIlroy is -140 over. Patrick Cantlay also has four top-3 finishes in six starts at Harbour Town plus a T7. He’s -115 to make more than 4.5 birdies in Round 1 and an over/under score of 68.5 (-140 over ) at FanDuel Sportsbook .

Harbour Town Golf Links

A players favorite on the Pete Dye design, Harbour Town Golf Links is a Par 71 tree-lined track that plays to 7,213 yards for the RBC Heritage event. Experience helps as players navigate a claustrophotic course where water is in play on all 18 holes. Golfers shape shots into tiny greens that average 3,700 square feet - second smallest on the PGA Tour. The perennial ryegrass rough is down from last year’s cut of 2.5 inches.

The doglegs around the trees and penalty areas don’t allow for the big hitters to separate themselves off the tee, as players often hit to similar target areas with more approach shots from 175 yards range.

Scottie Scheffler finished T11 here last year in his tournament debut shooting 68-65 before falling over the weekend with 69-70. Scheffler commented in the press room Tuesday before the 2024 event about the difference in coming from Augusta National to a completely different golf course here at Harbour Town.

“Yeah, it's very different. I think sometimes when you're coming from Augusta — we were talking about it today, the green at No. 14 just looked so small. I'm sitting there with a 6-iron looking at this small green, and Augusta everything is really big at times and then you come here and everything is really, really small it seems like,” Scheffler said.

Harbour Town Golf Links - Hole By Hole

“It's a great golf course, and it's a lot of fun to play. I think it's very interesting,” Scheffler added. “I think for some people, distance debate type people if they're ever looking at golf course design and how to combat people only trying to hit the ball really far, they need to come here and do a case study on this golf course because it's really, really good. You've got to curve the ball both directions, and you have to control your distance. You have to control where the golf ball is going. It's not just a place where you can go bomb it.”

Despite Jordan Spieth winning here in a playoff in 2022 and finishing runner-up last year in a playoff, the 30-year-old is not likely to find as much success this week with his game in a poor place. Spieth has missed the cut in three of his last four events including in The Players Championship which requires precision iron play. Spieth has lost strokes Tee-to-Green in four of his last five tournaments and his Approach stats rank outside the top-100 over his last 24 rounds.

Meanwhile, Zalatoris has continued his elite ball striking while also averaging 4+ strokes on the field Tee to-Green over his last five events. That includes a T9 last week at The Masters, T4 at the Arnold Palmer Inviational and T2 at The Genesis Invitational .

2024 PGA Championship odds, field: Surprising PGA picks from golf model that called 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the pga championship 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks for valhalla golf club.

Although Ludvig Aberg wasn't able to become just the seventh golfer in the last 100 years to win his first career major appearance, the 24-year-old performed better than everyone besides the No. 1 golfer in the world at the Masters. Aberg, who finished second behind Scottie Scheffler and three strokes better than the third-place finishers, will try to carry that success into his second major at the 2024 PGA Championship on Thursday, May 16 at Valhalla Golf Club Louisville, Ky. Aberg, who is 16-1 odds in the 2024 PGA Championship odds, has made the cut in his first nine tournaments in the 2024 PGA Tour schedule as one of the top golfers in his first full-time season on the PGA Tour. Scheffler is the 4-1 favorite in the latest PGA Championship odds 2024, followed by Jon Rahm (9-1) and Rory McIlroy (10-1).

Before locking in any 2024 PGA Championship picks of your own, entering picks on sites like DraftKings or FanDuel, or finalizing PGA Championship props and PGA Championship Pick Six entries, be sure to see the 2024 PGA Championship golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $10,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now with the PGA Championship 2024 field taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2024 PGA Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 PGA Championship: Brooks Koepka, a three-time PGA champion and one of the favorites, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top 10. Koepka has five major tournament wins on his resume and a reputation for elevating his level of play in big events. However, his last two major starts haven't gone well as he was 45th at the Masters, which followed a 64th-place finish at last year's Open Championship. He's failed to shoot par in each of his last seven rounds at major tournaments.

After notching three tournament wins in 2023, including last year's PGA Championship, it has been tough sledding for Koepka in 2024. He has no victories, or even top-fives, and across his six starts, he has three times as many finishes outside the top 25 (three) as he has inside the top 10 (one). He played Valhalla at the 2014 PGA Championship and finished in a tie for 15th place, but that placement ranks just eighth out of his 11 career PGA Championship starts.

Another surprise: Collin Morikawa, a 25-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Morikawa finished third at the Masters at 4-under-par, as the 27-year-old continues to have  his best performances at major events. He is already a two-time major champion, including winning the PGA Championship in 2020 and has four top-five finishes over his last 10 majors.

Morikawa has six career PGA Tour victories and two top-10 finishes over his first eight PGA Tour events this season. What he lacks in driving power he makes up for in accuracy, ranking fifth in driving accuracy, so he rarely has to take his second shot from anywhere but the fairway. He's a top-30 putter on the PGA Tour, ranking inside the top 30 in birdie average, one-putt percentage and putting average.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 PGA Championship picks

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 25-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .
