Travel insurance - when to buy & how to save

Travel insurance coupon codes are online promo codes that allow you to save money when you buy travel insurance. Simply by entering one of the codes above when you buy a policy online from one of our travel insurance partners, you can access a discounted premium. This means you can enjoy all the benefits you would usually expect when you purchase travel insurance, but with the added bonus of substantial savings off the normal price of cover.

Thinking of using a coupon code to help save money on the cost of travel insurance for your next trip? Make sure you consider the pros and cons first.

  • Save money. Yeah, obviously! With these coupon codes at your disposal, you can pay less for travel insurance – it’s as simple as that.
  • Quick and easy. You don’t need to fill out any complicated forms or sign up to any spam email marketing service; all you need to do is enter the relevant code when you buy a policy.
  • Variety. Finder.com.au offers coupon codes from a number of travel insurance providers, which means there are several options to choose from when searching for cover.
  • Wide range of policies. Travel insurance coupon codes can also be used across a range of policies, allowing you to choose cover that suits your needs.
  • You may need to look past the cost. The premium is far from the only factor that determines whether a travel insurance policy is right for you. You should also look at policy features, limits and exclusions when choosing an insurer.
  • Terms and conditions can apply. Make sure you’re aware of any terms and conditions that apply to travel insurance discounts.
  • Not all policies may be discounted. Some insurers only offer discounts on particular policies, so make sure that you're getting the policy you want.
  • The discount may only be available for a limited time. Some discounts are offered for a short period, so don't miss out.

Using a finder.com.au coupon code is quick and easy. All you have to do is follow a few simple steps:

  • Review the current coupon codes listed above and choose the one you want
  • Click on the relevant link to view the code for your chosen travel insurer
  • By clicking on the link, you will also be taken to the insurer’s website so you can obtain a detailed quote
  • Review your travel insurance quote. If you’re happy with the cost of cover and the features the policy offers, proceed to checkout
  • Enter your coupon code in the field provided during the checkout process. Click “Apply” if necessary
  • The coupon code discount will be automatically deducted from the cost of your policy
  • Pay for the policy and hit the road with peace of mind!

Why should you use a travel insurance coupon code? Because you could save money, that’s why. We could all do with a little extra spending money on our next holiday, and using coupon codes is a simple way to save when buying travel insurance and keep more money in your own pocket.

Just by copying and pasting one of the codes above, you could enjoy substantial savings on the cost of travel insurance. Our range of travel insurance coupon codes is also constantly updated, so make sure to check back with us whenever you’re planning your next holiday for the latest deals and discounts.

Coupon codes aren’t the only way you can save money on travel insurance. Keep the following tips in mind to help cut the cost of your premium:

  • Buy online. Travel insurance from travel agents and airlines tends to be far more expensive than insurance purchased online, simply because many travel agents and airlines charge a commission on top of the price of cover. When you use finder.com.au, you'll pay the same as going direct.
  • Choose a lower level of cover. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to find that the lower the level of travel insurance cover you choose, the cheaper your premium will be. So if the cost of cover is important to you, consider choosing a basic policy rather than comprehensive cover, and remember to remove any optional extras you don’t need.
  • Consider multi-trip cover. Are you a frequent traveller? If so, buying a separate travel insurance policy for every trip you take can add up to be quite expensive. That’s why it could be worth your while considering annual multi-trip insurance , which covers all your holidays across a 12-month period and works out to be much cheaper for regular travellers.
  • Purchase a joint policy. If you’re travelling with a friend or relative, it can be quite expensive if each of you purchase separate travel insurance policies. But if you pool your resources and buy a joint policy, you can enjoy significant savings.
  • Adjust your excess. Many insurers allow you to choose the excess amount payable when you make a claim. By shifting to a higher excess, you can enjoy lower premiums.
  • Student discounts. Students tend to travel on a tight budget, so saving a little extra money on your travel insurance cover is always welcome. With this in mind, you may want to hunt around for an insurer that offers discounted cover for student travellers.
  • Senior discounts. If you’re over 55 years of age and no longer working full time, some insurers will offer discounted travel insurance for seniors . Check the fine print or contact the insurer directly to find out whether they offer any seniors discounts.
  • Group discounts. Travelling as part of a group? Use your strength in numbers to negotiate a better deal on your travel insurance policy.
  • Find cover for the whole family. If you’re planning a family holiday, did you know that many insurers will cover your children and other dependents travelling with you free of charge? This can help reduce the cost of cover, so check the fine print to find out whether your insurer offers cover for the whole family.
  • Shop around. Last but definitely not least, make sure to shop around for the best policy. This will not only help you find the most affordable cover, but more importantly, it will allow you to choose the policy that provides the best value.

For more tips on travel insurance discounts and savings, check out our guide to reducing your travel insurance premium . Otherwise, choose the discount you want from those listed above and enjoy the savings on offer.

It can be easy to snatch up the policy offering the lowest premium when comparing policies but doing this could leave you drastically underinsured. Here are some key points you may want to consider when looking for value for money travel insurance:

  • Benefit excess: Low cost policies may have higher excesses applied for the payment of benefits. It is important to work out what you stand to pay in excess charges prior to application.
  • Deterioration: Many policies will take into consideration the “wear and tear” of items when determining the benefit that will be paid. It can be worth assessing how this will be applied on your policy.
  • Exclusions on the policy: Many low cost policies have many exclusions for claim payment in place. As stated previously, it can be worth comparing the exclusions of policies prior to application.
  • Documentation required: It can be helpful to get an understanding what documentation your insurer will require in order for a claim to be paid. Many insurers will require either a receipt or valuation document for some types of claims, for example.
  • Limits on valuable items: Basic policies will generally only provide cover for items up to a certain value. You may want to consider registering any high-value items prior to departure to ensure adequate cover is in place.
  • Activities covered: Insurer will often have a complete list of the sports and activities that they are willing to cover under the policy. Many basic policies do not provide cover for potentially risky activities. If you are going to be participating in any high-risk activities on your trip, it might be worth considering a specialist policy.
  • Don’t ignore warnings in the media or from the government: Many insurers will not honour claims for events that have taken place in countries that have been recommended as no-travel areas by the government or mass media, or for claims resulting from the events warned about in travel advisories. It can be worth checking travel advisories before heading overseas, and checking whether your policy covers you there.

Age 83. Had heart stent 8 years ago. Want travel insurance for all but heart problems. (Have traveled frequently in last 8 years- no problems). Where to find?

Avatar

Thank you for your question.

If you had a heart stent before, this is generally considered a pre-existing heart condition. If you would like to get a travel insurance, you may compare your options from our list of travel insurance for pre-existing heart conditions .

The insurers will typically assess your condition by phone or online questionnaire before they could provide a quote. Please feel free to click the name of the insurer and press the “Get quote” button if available request a quote.

Please make sure that you’ve read the relevant T&Cs or PDS of the product/ policy before making a decision and consider whether it is right for you.

I hope this helps.

Cheers, Anndy

I am 84 years of age and am quite fit and have no ongoing health problems however when I ask for a travel insurance quote and state my age I am told that they don’t cover older people. Where can I get an insurance company that will insure me on my next trip and not having to pay huge markups because of my age?

Thanks for reaching out.

You can refer to our page that lists insurers who offer insurance for people of your age . Simply fill out your travel details on the comparison form and click “Get a quote now” to receive and compare quotes from various travel insurance brands. There’s also a comparison table on the same page for you to quickly get an overview of what each insurance brand offers.

Please make sure to disclose all relevant information about your medical history to your insurer when you apply for cover. Failing to do so could result in your cover being void when it comes time to make a claim.

Cheers, Liezl

Thanks for getting in touch. Whether or not you’ll have cover for medical evacuation and repatriation will depend on the policy you choose. You can find out more about this topic by reading our article on travel insurance for medical evacuation .

Qantas Travel Insurance is an above-average choice of insurance for travelling Australians, offering unlimited medical coverage and good Covid-19 cover for both medical diagnoses and trip cancellations. However, due to certain limitations on age and below-average customer reviews, it may be best suited to Qantas Frequent Flyer members who can earn points with every dollar spent on their policy.

  • Unlimited medical includes dental
  • Good Covid-19 cover
  • Over 69 year olds need to purchase a separate policy
  • Fraudulent credit card activity is not covered

Whether or not you choose to fly with Qantas for your travels, you can still purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy from the airline. In addition to travel insurance, Qantas also offers cover for your health, car and home–all of which Qantas Frequent Flyer members can earn Qantas points with.

Despite Qantas being Australia’s most popular airline–dominating the market share with 60.8% of Australian travel according to an ACCC report–its travel insurance policy isn’t highly regarded by some of its customers. On Product Review, Qantas Comprehensive Travel Insurance received only 1.1 stars from 25 customer reviews. This is admittedly a small number of reviews so that needs to be taken into account.

The standard Qantas Comprehensive Travel Insurance policy is available to Australians aged up to 69 years old, with a separate policy available to those over 70.

For those travelling with family, the policy also covers accompanying children–as long as the child is under 18 at the time the insurance is issued. The child must also be travelling with you for the entire duration of the trip and be listed on the insurance certificate in order to qualify for any claims.

Unfortunately, fraudulent credit card activity is not covered with Qantas Travel Insurance. Qantas will, however, cover the cost of a replacement credit card, stolen or lost passports or travel documents to a maximum of $2,000. It also covers personal liability up to $3 million.

When it comes to missed connections, Qantas will only provide cover if it is for a special event–such as missing a wedding or a funeral–and up to $2,500. Travel delays are also only covered if it is more than six hours, with a maximum of $250 per 24 hours of delay up to a maximum of $1,500.

Unlimited cancellation cover is included, and is valid for cancellations due to Covid-19 as explained below.

Lost Luggage

Lost luggage is covered by Qantas in its travel insurance policy up to $15,000. Sub limits apply within this amount, and customers can increase item limits for high value items if desired.

Medical Coverage

Qantas Travel Insurance includes unlimited overseas medical expenses.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you will need to meet certain criteria in order to be covered. There are 43 conditions that are automatically covered (as long as they meet said criteria), while other conditions will require an assessment to determine if cover will be provided.

Is Dental Cover Included in Medical?

Yes, overseas emergency dental expenses are covered with unlimited medical cover. However, dental expenses due to sudden and acute pain are only covered up to $2000.

Does it Cover Me for Covid?

Yes, being diagnosed with Covid-19 is covered under the unlimited overseas medical expenses within Qantas’ travel insurance.

Cancellations are also covered due to a positive diagnosis, along with ‘reasonable’ additional expenses, such as if you are required to quarantine, up to $2,500.

What about pregnancy?

Qantas’ travel insurance policy covers pregnancy up to week 26. If there are pregnancy-related conditions that require treatment, they are classified as pre-existing conditions and therefore require an assessment at the time of taking out the policy to determine if cover will be provided.

What about Sports and Activities?

Qantas claims that “most amateur sporting activities are covered” under its comprehensive travel insurance policy. It does not provide a list of what these included activities are, however, there is a list of seven activities that will not be covered.

  • Activities on snow and ice (unless the additional snow package has been purchased);
  • Base jumping;
  • Racing (except on foot);
  • Any professional sporting activity;
  • Running with the bulls;
  • Mountaineering and rock climbing using support ropes; and

Customer Service

Qantas provides 24/7 emergency assistance to its comprehensive travel insurance policyholders. There is also a phone number for general enquiries, as well as a call back service.

Claims can also be lodged 24/7, from overseas or when you return home to Australia. There is an online claims form available to download which can then be sent to Qantas via post or email.

While Qantas Comprehensive Travel Insurance can suit a wide variety of Australians–particularly travelling parties under 69 years old–it is best suited to Qantas Frequent Flyer members keen to take advantage of earning one frequent flyer point per $1 spent on the policy premium.

The policy also offers good Covid cover, substantial cancellation cover for a range of reasons, and unlimited medical cover.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does qantas have travel insurance for over 70s.

Yes, Qantas does offer comprehensive travel insurance for those aged over 70. For travellers under 69 years old, the standard comprehensive travel insurance policy is offered, which has been reviewed above. You can read the PDS here .

For those over 69 years old, a separate policy is offered.

Who underwrites Qantas travel insurance?

Qantas travel insurance is underwritten by Pacific International Insurance, an Australian owned insurance company.

Where is the Qantas travel insurance PDS?

The Qantas Comprehensive Travel Insurance policy disclosure statement for those aged 0-69 years old can be found via the Qantas Insurance website here . For those aged over 69 years old, the policy disclosure statement is here due to differing coverage allowances.

qantas travel insurance discount code

Fact checked

They’ve been flying Australians across the country, and the world, for more than a century. While Qantas is primarily known as a means of getting you to your holiday destination, Australia’s largest airline also provides a range of travel insurance policies to go along with your flights.

If you’re wondering how Qantas’ policies fare against other providers, Savvy can help you compare. We help you choose the best travel insurance plan for your needs by allowing you to go over the pros and cons of each policy.

You can find the best bargain on your next trip by comparing coverage details like excesses and claim limits. Find out more about Qantas and your other insurance options with Savvy and get a quote today.

More about Qantas travel insurance

What travel insurance policies does qantas offer.

Qantas has several options for travel insurance, such as:

  • International Comprehensive: Qantas’ most comprehensive cover for an international holiday, this top-level policy covers you for cancellation due to illness or injury, the excess on a rental car, the loss of luggage and unlimited overseas medical treatment. You’re also able to add children under the age of 18 to a policy for free.
  • Australian Comprehensive: this domestic policy offers similar benefits to the international option, but some of the claim limits are lower. You’ll be covered for cancellation, the loss of your bags and coverage for some COVID-19-related costs.
  • Annual Multi-Trip: if you’re a frequent flyer who is used to taking a few trips over a year, Qantas offers an annual policy. This policy gives you unlimited travel across 12 months, with the length of each trip capped at 45 days no matter whether you’re holidaying in Australia or overseas.

If you want to make sure you get the best bargain on travel insurance before you take that much-anticipated holiday, comparing with Savvy is the way to go.

What optional extras are available through Qantas?

Travel insurance doesn't always cover everything and sometimes providers will require you to pay extra if you’re taking part in a particularly risky activity while you’re on holiday. Qantas is no different, offering a few add-on options, including:

  • Snow sports cover option: if you’re taking a ski holiday in France or visiting Australia’s snow-capped mountains, you’ll need to take out extra coverage. This covers you for any pre-paid ski costs, the closure of the ski run or the cost of hiring replacement equipment.
  • Specified item cover option: like most providers, Qantas places limits on how much you can claim if you’re involved in an incident on holiday. However, it allows you to pay extra to cover single items up to $6,000 or a selection of items no greater than $15,000.
  • Specified medical conditions option: if you suffer from a medical condition that isn’t automatically covered by your policy, you may need to pay a higher premium to get coverage. Conditions such as graves diseases, glaucoma and reflux are all covered, but certain types of diabetes, heart conditions and cancer aren’t automatically included in policies.

What exclusions should I be aware of when buying travel insurance through Qantas?

Some of the general exclusions on Qantas' coverage include:

  • Coverage if you’re 70 or over
  • A loss which is recoupable under another scheme (for example, private health insurance or an airline refund)
  • Loss of enjoyment, a business opportunity or damage to goodwill
  • Losses resulting from war, insurrections, revolutions or the act of a foreign enemy
  • If your means of transport suffers a mechanical fault
  • If you’ve injured yourself being intoxicated by alcohol or drugs
  • Any loss resulting from you breaking the law
  • Medical treatment for an undisclosed pre-existing condition

If you’ve done your homework and found a policy that catches your eye, it’s best to brush up on the provider’s Product Disclosure Statement. In Qantas’ case, the fine print is found on their website and provides a detailed breakdown of each policy.

What we think of Qantas travel insurance

What we like, generous claim limits.

Compared to its competitors, Qantas’ claim limits are reasonably generous, particularly when it comes to the caps on car excess and loss or damage of your items.

Low excesses

Qantas has one of the cheapest excesses around, with the lowest on their policies being $70. When filing your travel insurance claim, you’ll be required to pay this amount upfront.

Ability to earn frequent flyer points

Purchasing travel insurance through Qantas allows you to earn Qantas Points, with some policies allowing you to earn up to one point for every dollar spent on your premium. These can be redeemed for domestic or international flights.

What we don't like

Lack of extra add-ons.

While its competitors offer add-ons that cover you for riding a motorcycle or taking part in a high-risk activity, Qantas has relatively few optional extras. The one exception is the provider’s winter sports cover.

Low age limits

Unlike some other companies which essentially have no cap on the age of people who can take out a policy, Qantas limits policies to those under the age of 70.

Modest cancellation cover

You’re only able to claim up to $3,000 in expenses if you need to cancel your domestic holiday with Qantas, while some other providers offer unlimited coverage if you need to call off your travel plans.

Types of travel insurance

International.

International travel insurance can offer cover for a range of events, including medical expenses, lost luggage or items, cancellation fees and more when you're overseas and a long way from home.

If you're journeying within Australia, domestic policies are designed to offer many of the same protections as international travel insurance (with the exception of medical expenses).

Single trip

The most standard and common type of travel insurance, this policy can cover you for one trip starting and ending in Australia (and is available for both international and domestic travel).

Annual multi-trip

As the name suggests, this type of travel insurance covers multiple trips over a 12-month period. Depending on your insurer, you may be able to take an unlimited number of trips up to 90 days each.

You don't have to have a return ticket booked to take out cover while you're overseas. One-way travel insurance enables you to access cover without a set end date, such as if you're moving temporarily.

You may need to take out specialist coverage if you're setting sail on a cruise. Fortunately, cruise insurance can cover emergency evacuation, cabin confinement and more.

Just because you're older doesn't mean travel insurance isn't still important. If you qualify for cover, seniors' travel insurance can offer greater peace of mind for included events while you're travelling.

Adding winter sports or ski cover to your policy can add protection against damage to your equipment, piste closure due to bad weather and activities such as back-country skiing, heliskiing and more.

Adventure sports

Looking to enjoy some adventure sports on holiday? An adventure sports pack can grant you cover for a range of activities, such as hiking, scuba diving and motorcycle or scooter riding.

Jetsetting with the whole clan in tow? Some insurers offer family travel insurance, which enables you to include yourself, your partner and your dependent children under one policy to help you save.

If you're travelling interstate or overseas with your partner (or simply another friend or family member), you may be able to access a discount by taking out a joint or duo travel insurance policy.

Frequently asked questions about Qantas travel insurance

Yes – the following cover is offered on certain Qantas policies:

  • Unlimited overseas medical expense cover
  • Unlimited overseas medical evacuation and repatriation cover ($10,000 claim limit for Australian Comprehensive)
  • $2,500 Coronavirus Travel Costs, such as for quarantine and trip cancellation expenses ($7,500 for Annual Multi-Trip)

Travel insurance claims can be made day or night seven days a week online through their website. Qantas requires you to download a claim form and provide information such as:

  • The type of claim you’re making
  • Circumstances surrounding the claim
  • How much you need to be reimbursed

Once you’ve submitted your claim, Qantas’ website says it can take up to ten working days to provide an outcome. It’s a good idea to promptly respond to requests for more information, as any delays could slow down the process.

Yes – you’re covered under Qantas’ policies if you’re up to 26 weeks pregnant. However, Qantas doesn’t cover pregnancy-related illnesses such as hyperemesis, gestational diabetes or any other sickness first developed after you purchased the policy.

The price you pay for travel insurance depends on several variables, including but not limited to:

  • How long you’re planning to travel
  • The destinations you’re visiting (for example, a trip to Germany will cost more than one to New Zealand)
  • Whether you suffer from any pre-existing conditions
  • If you need any optional extras, such as cruise or adventure sports cover
  • The travel insurance company you choose and the level of coverage you’re prepared to pay for

A single-trip policy covers just one trip, while a multi-trip covers many trips throughout the year to different locations (usually allowing between 45 and 90 travel days for each trip). If you haven’t yet booked a return ticket, a one-way travel insurance policy covers you for only one leg of the trip for up to 12 months, which can be extended by as many as a further 12 months.

Qantas Airways is an airline company with longstanding history and tradition. Being founded in 1920 makes it the third oldest airline in the world. Today, it is the biggest carrier in Australia, both by fleet and international flights and destinations. The company employs 30,000 people, most of whom lives in Australia. The Qantas Group operates also the Jetstar brand, which offers cheap and affordable flights. Qantas brand is addressed to more demanding customers – international business class offers luxurious experience that starts right after check-in: those who choose this option can use business lounge, skybed – a seat that transforms into a full bed, on-board lounge and dining and a lot of common amenities like laptop charging ports and personal TV with video on demand. Of course, Qantas offers different travel classes for different needs. They have Economy and Business, but also Premium Economy and First Class.

Frequent Flyer Membership

If you fly a lot, you should consider joining Qantas Frequent Flyer club. This way, every time you travel you earn Qantas Points. To join this program, all Australian residents must pay a joining fee o AU$89,59 and fill up a form with personal data. You will be rewarded with points on every flight, but the number of points will depend of your travel class and distance flown. You can use an app Qantas Points for iOS, Windows Phone and Android to keep track of your points. If you gather enough of them you can redeem them for flights and upgrades at Qantas, but you can also use them at Qantas partners like hotels, car rentals and many more.

Qantas Cards

Don’t miss anything

Airlines have accustomed us to varying prices depending on time, destination and popular discounts. If you don’t have time to keep track of them, there are three ways to do it automatically. First, use Qantas smartphone app to create a notification alert on discount for the flight that you want to take. The app lets you do tons of stuff – you can book flights and hotels, store boarding pass in Apple Wallet and turn on alerts for departure, boarding time and more. Check it yourself.

Qantas Mobile App

Second, subscribe to Red Email. It’s a form of newsletter, but instead of boring spam – you get Qantas deals and sometimes even Qantas promo codes directly to your e-mail. Just open Qantas website, scroll to the bottom find a box that says “Enter your email address”, fill it up and click “subscribe”. Of course you can cancel this subscription at any time, so don’t worry about getting too many e-mails.

Qantas newsletter

Third way is using an RSS Feed. Most websites use RSS to notify their about new posts, but at Qantas you can personalise them and choose what you are looking for – select your region, city and feed type and you will be informed about latest fares directly to your rss-enabled browser or third-party software that you use to read rss.

Qantas Walkabout Pass Sale

Qantas offers a lot of spectacular international destinations. It doesn’t matter if you are looking for business class trip to USA to meet with new clients or economy flight to Jakarta to take a boat ride at Indonesian archipelago lake, Qantas makes it possible and also, gives you something extra. Walkabout Pass is an opportunity to see Australia and New Zealand at a reduced price. When you are booking an international flight, choose the multi-city option and select additional domestic flight to 30 destinations in Australia or New Zealand and save a lot of money.

Plan your trip

You can use Qantas not only to find a flight fare, but also to plan your entire holiday. Start by looking at Top 10 destinations at Qantas website or use their guide “Where to go in 2016” to find some ideas for a perfect holiday. Next – find, plan and book everything that you may need: flight, hotel, car, insurance and activities. All possible due to Qantas partnership with other companies.

Quanas offer

If you are planning a trip you can start by looking at some great destinations and hotels at Airbnb or Booking.com . You may also be interested in Jetstar , a company owned by Qantas that offers cheap flights.
