What clothing to wear on safari in Africa is frequently one of the first questions that people ask before going on a trip there. And with the vast variety of animals, climates and ecosystems it’s important to be prepared with the right kind of clothes!

Depending on what time of year you are visiting (and what parts of Tanzania), what sort of climate or environment you will experience, what type of safari activity you will be doing and what time of day, the outfit you should wear on a safari in Tanzania may differ.

What to pack for safari in Tanzania?

When planning a safari adventure, it is important to be prepared when it comes to the type of clothing to pack.

If you are planning a safari trip to Tanzania it is important to pack light, but also make sure that whatever clothes you do bring along are versatile, so they can be worn in the day and/or night if necessary.

What clothes to pack for a safari trip in Tanzania?

There are a few essential clothing items that you should absolutely make sure to bring along on a safari trip:

Lightweight, loose-fitting pants

You should always bring along a pair of comfortable and loose-fitting pants for your safari adventures. Lightweight fabrics such as linen, cotton or technical materials such as nylon are best. Make sure they fold up small and that they can also be washed easily in case you get dirty or wet while out on safari.

Comfortable T-shirt

A t-shirt, loose-fitting blouse or button-down are usually what people choose to wear on safari. Many people opt to wear a long-sleeved shirt underneath as well, for extra protection from the sun and insect bites. Think layers!

Thin gloves (optional)

Gloves are never 100% necessary, but can come in handy when it gets chilly or if you need extra grip for holding binoculars or a camera. It is also important to protect yourself against mosquito bites and gloves are a great way to help with this.

Hat or headband

Any good packing checklist for W hat to Wear on Safari in Tanzania includes some kind of protection from the sun! Think to pack a hat or a headband in your suitcase to protect from the harsh UV rays of the desert, as well as provide protection from flying sand in case it gets windy.

Lightweight, breathable jacket

If you visit during the colder winter months, bring a jacket or windbreaker that is thin and lightweight. This will allow you to remain somewhat cool while protecting yourself from the unpredictable Tanzania weather!

What kind of shoes should you wear on safari?

When deciding what to wear on your safari in Tanzania, don’t forget to decide on which shoes to take! This will depend entirely on what kind of activities you are doing and what time of year it is. Sneakers or hiking boots can be a good option for your safari activities, but if you’re just on a game drive in the vehicle, flip flops or sandals will be what you choose to wear.

A good pair of walking shoes or boots (that are broken in)

If you plan on taking part in any other outdoor activities, like hiking, it is important to make sure that your feet are safe and comfortable. It would be horrible to injure yourself halfway through the trip because you were wearing uncomfortable shoes! Pack a pair of comfortable but durable walking shoes with you to make sure you have suitable footwear for your animal sighting adventure.

What else to take on safari in Tanzania?

Insect repellent.

Mosquitos can be a real problem while on safari in Tanzania, and bringing along some insect repellent is your best bet in protecting yourself against them. The most effective type of insect repellent is one that contains Deet, the active ingredient in killing those pesky predators. Be sure to choose a repellent containing this ingredient for best results!

While you can also purchase insect repellent once you arrive in Tanzania, it can sometimes be up to 3x more expensive than the products back home! Rest assured and toss a can of bug spray in your suitcase before your departure.

Sunglasses/sunscreen

Protect your eyes and skin from the strong African sun with sunscreen and a pair of sunglasses. Even if you decide to go for a safari on a cloudy day when you can’t see much sun, you will still be exposed to its rays and should take care to protect your skin from potential sunburn.

Day pack/backpack

A day pack or a small practical backpack is a must-have while on safari in Tanzania. You will need a place to store all of your belongings, such as money, water bottles and things for the journey. A backpack is also perfect for carrying a camera with you on your adventure!

A flashlight or headlamp can come in very useful if you’re going out on an adventure at night. This is particularly true if you’re planning on going out for a walk with your guide to see the nocturnal animals, like lions and hyenas. Be sure to pack one of these small yet exciting accessories before departing!

Reusable water bottle

Tanzania is warm and a safari in the desert is typically pretty hot (duh!). A metal reusable water bottle can be a great way to bring water with you and stay hydrated throughout the day. You’ll also help reduce your environmental impact by not having to purchase disposable plastic water bottles in Tanzania!

Camera (with plenty of film or memory!)

One of the main reasons people go on safari trips is to snap some pictures; so make sure to pack your camera and the necessary memory cards!

An action camera like a GoPro is a great accessory to take with you on a safari adventure – it’s lightweight, durable, waterproof, and when used with a long selfie stick or tripod it can get those close up shots of animals that you may not be able to get close to.

For more experienced photographers, a DSLR camera with a zoom lens is a great camera choice for crisp, clear photos of nature even from far away.

Vloggers and everyday travelers can opt for a more lightweight camera option like a digital camera or even a disposable film camera. If you don’t have a camera, you can even take great quality photos using just your smartphone!

What To Wear On A Tanzania Safari [The Ultimate Guide]

31 January 2023

It’s not difficult to prepare for your forthcoming safari in Tanzania, including what to wear and what things to pack. Most likely, you already have everything you need in your closet!

On a Tanzanian safari, our clothing recommendations are applicable year-round, but they alter depending on whether you’re climbing Mount Kilimanjaro or making your way to the world-famous Zanzibar Island .

This article will tell you everything you need to know about what to wear during your Tanzanian safari.

What Will The Weather Be Like?

The dry season, which lasts from late June to early October, is when you may see the most wildlife in Tanzania. In the Serengeti , late January to early February offer the best chances to witness the wildebeest calving and the migration, respectively. The “long rains,” also known as the major rainy season in Tanzania, extend roughly from March to May.

Recommended Safari Clothes

It is advised to wear loose, comfortable, and easy-to-wash clothing. The idea is to bring only what you need because most camps and lodges will wash your clothes for a modest cost. There is no need to dress up for safaris because they are casual.

Plan to wear layers so you can acclimatize to weather variations because, depending on the time of year, early morning game drives can be rather chilly while daytime temperatures can get quite warm. Wear neutral or khaki-colored clothing instead of dark blue or black, which tends to draw tsetse flies. Sunglasses, insect repellant, sunscreen, and wide-brimmed hats are essential. It’s recommended that you wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, socks, and insect repellent to prevent mosquito bites after dusk. Here is a checklist of every piece of clothing you should take and what to wear on your Tanzania safari . So you can refer to it while you pack for your trip.

  • T-shirts and tank-tops
  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Light long pants or convertible long-short pants
  • Warm fleece pullover or jacket
  • Heavy sweater, gloves, and toque if traveling in the cold season
  • One swimsuit
  • Cotton socks and underwear
  • One pair of comfortable walking shoes
  • One pair of sandals or flip-flops
  • Wide-brimmed hat

Extra Items To Pack for your trip

You should definitely pack light when you travel to Tanzania . Here are some extra essentials you can check off your list when packing for your vacation.

  • Credit cards and ATM bank cards
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Small flashlight or headlamp
  • Insect repellent
  • Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate if necessary
  • Safari itinerary
  • US dollars in large and small bills
  • Plane tickets
  • Travel Insurance Policy
  • Emergency Contact Numbers
  • Eye drops and extra contact lenses or spare glasses if necessary
  • Anti-bacterial hand sanitizer
  • Tissue paper and a small travel towel
  • Camera, extra memory cards, batteries, and charger, if applicable
  • Ziplock bags for toiletries, camera equipment, snacks, and so on
  • Personal toiletries
  • Small first aid medical kit including Tylenol, antimalaria pills, cold and allergy medicine, itch medication, band-aids, stomach ache remedy, antibiotic cream, diarrhea medicine, prescription antibiotic for travelers diarrhea, and any prescription medications.

What Clothing to Wear In Zanzibar?

If you decide to explore Stone Town or any other part of Zanzibar other than the beach resorts before your safari, it’s best to dress modestly. Women shouldn’t dress in short skirts, thigh-high shorts, sleeveless shirts, or exposing shirts. However, Capri trousers or at least knee-length shorts are fine. For men, knee-length shorts or pants are appropriate.

Final Thoughts on what to wear on a Safari

The main thing to remember when packing clothes for a Tanzanian safari is comfort. With this guide, you’ll be able to dress perfectly for your vacation and be ready for your life-changing adventure.

How to Plan a Safari Trip to Africa: 10 Successful Tips

A safari trip in Tanzania is an exhilarating adventure that requires careful consideration of what you wear. As you embark on this thrilling journey through the heart of the African wilderness, your choice of clothing can significantly impact your comfort and overall experience.

To make the most of your African safari, you need to opt for loose and comfortable attire, allowing for optimal air circulation and freedom of movement.

Dressing in layers is also crucial for handling the varied climate throughout the day, and it’s essential if you’re planning to combine your safari with a Kilimanjaro climb.

Neutral or khaki-colored clothing is also recommended to keep you at ease and fend off the pesky tsetse flies.

We will discuss what to wear on a safari in Tanzania, providing the essential suggestions for making your trip memorable and enjoyable.

What to Wear on Safari in Tanzania: The Ultimate Checklist

When going on a safari in Tanzania, it’s essential to dress appropriately for the adventure. The following is a list of what to wear and why.

  • Loose and comfortable clothing
  • Dress in layers
  • Neutral or khaki colors
  • Wide-brimmed hat
  • Insect repellent
  • Comfortable footwear
  • Rain jacket

Check out each item in detail and learn why including it in your packing list is essential.

1. Loose and Comfortable Clothing

You’ll need to wear loose and comfortable clothing on your safari in Tanzania. Opt for clothing that allows air circulation and keeps you cool in the warm African climate.

During game drives and other activities, staying comfortable is important, especially during long hours in the vehicle. Loose-fitting clothing helps regulate your body temperature and minimizes any chafing or discomfort.

2. Dress in Layers

Pack your clothing in layers and easily adjust your outfit throughout the day to stay prepared for the changing temperatures on your safari in Tanzania.

Tanzania’s climate can vary significantly, with cooler mornings and evenings and hotter midday temperatures. Layering allows you to add or remove clothing as needed, ensuring your comfort throughout the day.

This approach becomes even more critical if you plan to combine your safari with Kilimanjaro climbing , as the mountain experiences extreme temperature swings. By dressing in layers, you can easily accommodate these changes, staying warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot.

3. Neutral or Khaki Colors

To blend in with the surroundings and avoid attracting tsetse flies, opt for clothing in neutral or khaki colors on your safari in Tanzania. Bright colors can draw the attention of these bothersome insects, and nobody wants to constantly swat at flies while trying to enjoy the beauty of the luxury safari .

You can seamlessly blend into the natural environment and minimize the risk of attracting Tsetse flies by choosing earthy tones like khaki, beige, or olive green. These colors mimic the shades of the grasslands and savannah, allowing you to observe wildlife without being noticed by insects or disturbing the animals.

To ensure a hassle-free and enjoyable safari experience in Tanzania, it can be best to go on your trip with a reputable safari company , as they know the ins and outs of the region.

4. Sunglasses

You should bring sunglasses on your safari trip to Africa to protect your eyes from the harsh sunlight and dust. The African sun can be intense, and the glare can be blinding, especially in open savannahs and grasslands.

Sunglasses with polarized lenses are highly recommended as they reduce glare and provide better visual clarity.

Look for sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection to shield your eyes from harmful rays. Opt for sunglasses with a wraparound design to provide maximum coverage and prevent dust and debris from entering your eyes.

5. Sunscreen

Don’t forget to apply sunscreen generously to protect your skin from harmful UV rays while on safari in Tanzania. The intense African sun can be unforgiving, so taking precautions is important.

Look for a high-SPF sunscreen, preferably one with a rating of 30 or higher, to ensure maximum protection. Be sure to put it on your face, neck, arms, and legs.

6. Wide-Brimmed Hat

You should definitely consider bringing along a wide-brimmed hat for your safari in Tanzania. This cap will help keep the sun off your face and protect you from insects. As a result of the wide brim, the hat offers adequate shade, protecting your face, neck, and ears from the scorching African sun.

7. Insect Repellent

To protect yourself from pesky bugs, consider using insect repellent while on safari in Tanzania. The country is known for its diverse insect population, including mosquitoes, which can carry diseases such as malaria.

It’s essential to choose a repellent that contains at least 30% DEET for effective protection. DEET is a powerful chemical compound that repels many insects, including mosquitoes, flies, and ticks. When applying the repellent, follow the instructions on the packaging and apply it to all exposed skin.

8. Comfortable Footwear

Don’t forget to pack a sturdy pair of shoes for your safari in Tanzania. Your choice of footwear can greatly impact your comfort and safety during the trip.

While heavy hiking boots may not be necessary for game drives, it’s important to have comfortable walking shoes or tennis shoes with good grip. These will ensure that you can easily navigate the terrain and enjoy your wildlife-viewing experience without any discomfort.

If you plan on participating in walking safaris or nature hikes, lightweight hiking boots or trail shoes are recommended.

9. Rain Jacket

When packing for your safari in Tanzania, ensure that you have a lightweight rain jacket in case of unexpected rain showers. While Tanzania is known for its dry season, it’s always wise to be prepared for the occasional downpour.

A rain jacket will keep you dry and comfortable during these sporadic showers. Opt for a lightweight jacket that’s easy to pack and won’t weigh you down as you explore the wilderness. Look for a waterproof and breathable jacket so you can stay dry without feeling too hot or clammy.

Embrace the Tanzanian Safari Experience in Comfort and Style

When you go on a safari in Tanzania, remember to wear essential clothes and accessories to ensure a relaxing and enjoyable adventure. Don’t forget essential items like sunglasses, sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats, and insect repellent to protect yourself from the elements.

Long pants and long-sleeved shirts provide added protection, while comfortable footwear allows you to explore easily. Also, be prepared for unexpected rain with a lightweight rain jacket. With the right attire, you’ll be ready to immerse yourself in Tanzania’s incredible wildlife and landscapes.

What to Wear on Safari in Tanzania

Pay attention, as this is our extensive guide on what to wear on safari in Tanzania.

tanzania safari outfits

Once you’ve experienced a soul-stirring safari adventure for the first time, it’s a trip you’ll never forget. And while it might sound trivial, what you wear during your trip can either make or break your touring experience.

Call me dramatic, but what you wear matters – and no; I’m not talking about how great your outfit looks. Think: practical, useful, and climate appropriate clothing that you need in your life. Pay attention, as this is our extensive guide on what to wear on safari in Tanzania .

Climate in Tanzania and what to wear

The climate of Tanzania is considered to be tropical, yet it varies significantly between regions due to the topography. But no matter the time of the year, or your location in Tanzania, you can expect temperatures to fluctuate significantly throughout the day (think hot and humid during the day to cold and chilly at night). Basically you need to have clothing to cater for all seasons.

Temperature wise, the warmest months are between November through February (25–31°C or 77.0–87.8°F) and the colder months are from May to August (15–20°C or 59–68°F). July and August are the country’s coldest, driest months – and is the best time to visit Tanzania. June through September is another period worth planning your trip around, as they are the prime months for viewing migrating wildebeests and elephants November through February

Travel on: an African safari tour

What should I wear on safari in Tanzania?

Lightweight hiking pants.

Once you’ve booked your safari adventure , your first point of call should be your local outdoor apparel store (or at least the online version). Here, you’ll find every type of travel and outdoor pants under the sun for all seasons; each designed to keep you fresh, comfortable, and ready for whatever activities you’re about to enjoy.

Look out for pants that are made of quick-drying, light, stretch-woven fabric. A sturdy pair of hiking pants will cater for all seasons, so regardless of when you travel; this is one item you can’t leave behind.

Score some bonus points if they feature zip-off legs and transform to shorts within seconds. If you want to go all the way and complete the look, stick with neutral colours such as khaki, camel, or tan tones.

A safari truck travelling alongside a body of water in Africa

Similar to the above advice for long pants, you should consider purchasing a comfortable pair of travel shorts for when the temperature rises in the warmer months and long pants just won’t cut it.

If you’re not interested in investing in new shorts or are just generally trying to keep costs down, you can opt for a pair of workout shorts that you may already own. These are sure to keep you cool and most importantly, sweat-free!

A person sitting in a chair crossed legged smiling looking at his camera

Activewear is a staple item in the wardrobe of most travellers around the world, and are perfect no matter the weather. So, why not pack a few pairs of tights, leggings, or sweats for those days when you not only want to dress down but also embrace maximum comfort and control.

Read the article: Safari in South Africa vs Tanzania: Where Should You Go?

Long sleeve tops

If you don’t already own a few long sleeved, sweat-wicking tops, it pays to invest in a few as they are designed to keep you fresh in high temperatures. To keep costs down and save from purchasing a whole new wardrobe, a lightweight shirt will do the trick; as it’s essential to protect yourself from the sun.

Also worth noting is that mosquitoes are a concern in Tanzania, so long sleeved tops act as great shield to protect yourself. Black clothing – despite attracting more heat from the sun – is said to deter mosquitos, so this is worth weighing up.

You don’t want to be stuck wearing long pants or a long sleeve top once the temperature rises. A few t-shirts or singlet tops won’t go to waste and are essential for the days when the temperature skyrockets. If you are wearing a singlet top or a t-shirt, don’t forget to slather on some sunscreen.

Windbreaker jacket

While it’ll be warm in Tanzania for most parts of the year, it will undoubtedly be windy in some parts. A windbreaker jacket is a perfect item to carry with you as it won’t take up too much room, yet will save you from feeling the drop in temperature.

Insulated jacket (depending on the season)

Some jackets are made to cater to either warm temperatures and cold weather with a waterproof shell. Depending on your preference, a warm padded coat should do the trick under your lighter waterproof jacket.

A herd of zebras in Tanzania

A sweatshirt

Anyone who has enjoyed a safari adventure will tell you that layers are everything! Start with light, breathable layers (long sleeve tops, t-shirts) with your sweatshirt serving as the warm and cosy layer to top it all off.

A skirt or dress

If your safari tour extends all the way through to Zanzibar , you should wear either long trousers, a skirt, or dress, and revealing clothes should be avoided. This is to show respect for the local customs and beliefs. At some religious sites, if you are not dressed appropriately, you may be asked to leave by a guard based on the failure to adhere to local culture and expectations on how to wear.

Hiking boots

While not essential, a pair of sturdy, waterproof hiking boots will do wonders for you. Avoid purchasing a brand new pair of hiking boots, as this will result in terrible blisters. A sturdy pair of hiking boots can be expensive, but they are certainly worth the investment as they’re designed to last forever, protect your feet, and give your ankles and back better support.

If hiking boots aren’t the best option for you, a pair of sneakers will do the trick. All you need is a pair of closed-toe shoes to protect your feet. The bottom line is that bushwalking is a large part of most itineraries, so no matter what they look like, a pair of comfortable, closed-in walking shoes are a must. Even more so, closed-in shoes will help to protect your feet from cuts and scratches when walking through the bush, and will also act as barrier protection against bites or stings from dangerous animals in this environment.

Sandals or Birkenstocks

When the end of the day rolls around, and you need to give your feet a break, a pair of sandals, Birkenstocks, or thongs will offer your toes and heels a much-needed airing out.

Two people in a safari truck wearing safari gear

Items to leave at home

Forget about it – unless you decide you cannot live without your favourite pair of jeans. Considering denim takes ages to air dry while often being too warm to wear in the day, they are not ideal. Like we said, wear whatever is most appropriate for you, yet if you can avoid packing thick, denim jeans, then definitely do that.

The animals of the Serengeti won’t notice whether you’re repping a full face of makeup; and neither will the rest of your group. Of course, do what makes you feel your version of comfortable but at least be certain to layer on a strong sunscreen.

Formal outfits

Even at the the luxury safari lodges, the dress code will be far from formal. Save a few clean shirts to wear at night, and a nice pair of pants or a skirt for the evening, but above all, make sure you’re comfortable!

Expensive jewellery

A big sparkly pair of diamond earrings or a large watch is out of place in the bush, so it’s best to leave these at home. You also don’t want to be the only one loudly jingling and jangling when you’re trying to approach the more timid creatures of Tanzania.

Other miscellaneous items to pack

  • Breathable, thermal layers (season dependent)
  • Pyjamas to wear at night
  • Gloves (depending on the season)
  • Beanie (depending on the season)

What To Wear On Safari: My Detailed Safari Packing List With Photos

' src=

You’ve all seen the brochure photos: a smiling family is sitting at a camping table in the middle of the African bush. Behind them, the sun is setting, and perhaps a giraffe is crossing the savanna landscape.

Contents (click to view)

What are they wearing? I’m sure you can picture it: lightweight designer safari gear, all matching, in indistinguishable shades of beige, taupe and camel. Maybe the dad is wearing khaki chinos and the mum has a floppy-brimmed hat (colour: putty) on her head. They all have sand-coloured lace-up boots on, and from head to toe all their clothes are pristine, clean, and crease-free.

If it’s your first time figuring out what to wear on safari, it might feel like this is the model you have to follow. Like, having booked the blindingly expensive trip of a lifetime, you now have to go out and splurge hundreds more on the ‘proper’ kit, otherwise people will laugh at you and you may even get into trouble for not doing it right.

Well I’m here to reassure you: that’s rubbish.

A packing list for safari: Pin this for later

What should you wear on safari?

I’ve been on five safaris (to Kenya , Botswana , Tanzania , Uganda and South Africa) and I still don’t own any ‘official’ safari clothes. I’ve always worn stuff I already own and been just fine.

That said, there are some dos and don’ts about packing for a safari, some things it’s a good idea to make sure you bring with you, and some stuff you should definitely leave at home.

So welcome to my complete safari packing guide. I’m going to go through a few points and FAQs, and then make a handy list at the end. Scroll down if you just want to skip ahead to that.

What happens on a safari?

Days on safari follow a similar schedule. You wake early and head out shortly after sunrise for a morning activity – usually a game drive but sometimes a boat cruise, guided walk, or scenic flight.

You return to the camp mid-morning for brunch and have some hours to relax in the heat of the day before heading out again for another activity later in the afternoon. Your afternoon game drive or boat cruise normally ends with sunset drinks in a beautiful location, before you head back to the camp for dinner.

After dinner you might sit round the campfire or boma enjoying a few drinks with your fellow guests, but most people go to bed fairly early, ready for another dawn start the next day.

What to wear on safari during the day

The most important thing to note is that a safari is not a fashion show. It can be hot and dusty, or rainy and muddy, so it’s important to dress for comfort and practicality, so leave the designer gear, luxury fabrics and bling jewellery at home. Instead, bring stuff that washes easily, dries quickly and hides the dirt well!

You’ll also be coating yourself daily in suncream and insect repellent, so don’t bring anything that won’t mix well with those!

When I was in Botswana in December, some days reached 40 degrees C (104 F) with high humidity, so think lightweight breathable fabrics like cotton, viscose or sweat-wicking sportswear, or even linen if you don’t mind the creases).

T-shirts and shorts are your friends, but I’d avoid strappy vests for two reasons:

  • Many African countries are quite conservative, and it doesn’t do to flash a lot of skin.
  • The sun is extremely strong and the more skin you show, the more of you there is to get burned, even in a shaded safari car.

T-shirts and lightweight shorts or cropped trousers are my go-to things to wear on safari

What to wear on a game drive or boat cruise

On wildlife viewing trips you’ll be sitting in a car for several hours, so it’s important to be comfortable. T-shirts and shorts are a great option.

Early mornings in Africa can be chilly, so bring a long-sleeved shirt, light sweater or jacket just in case.

Don’t forget your hat and sunglasses. Safari cars have roofs, but sometimes the roof rolls back so you can stand up, and when the sun is low in the sky it can shine in from the side very strongly. I was surprised by how much I ended up needing my hat.

Since you won’t be walking around much, light sneakers or sandals are fine.

Safari cars are open-sided, so if it rains you may get a bit wet. Most safari companies carry ponchos in the car, to hand out to guests when it rains, but you might want to bring your own light waterproof raincoat just in case.

What to wear on a walking safari

For a walking safari the principles are the same, but you should wear long trousers to prevent your legs being cut or scratched by branches, and closed-toed shoes to protect you from biting or stinging animals or insects.

Although walking safaris can sometimes last for three or four hours, you don’t actually walk that far because there’s a lot of stopping and looking at stuff. So you don’t need hiking boots; comfortable trainers or walking shoes are fine. If you’re travelling in rainy season you might want to bring waterproof or Gore-Tex ones.

Do I need warm clothes on safari?

We think of Africa as being hot, and it is, but it can also be extremely cold. If you travel during the northern hemisphere summer, that’s winter in most of Africa, and temperatures can drop below freezing especially in desert areas, if you’re at altitude, and the further south you go.

In Botswana and South Africa during the winter, average nighttime temperatures can be 0 or even -2 degrees C (28-32 F), and remember that most safari cabins and tents are not heated!

Even in Kenya, which is much closer to the equator and therefore not as cold, nights and early mornings can definitely be chilly.

What to wear on safari in Kenya: on chilly mornings I wore my lightweight down jacket

Staff in camps will provide you with hot water bottles and blankets both in your tent and on game drives, but you still need to bring warm clothes with you as well.

If you’re travelling to the southern African countries between April and October, I’d recommend bringing at least one pair of long trousers, one long-sleeved top, one jumper, and a packable down jacket.

But remember to dress in layers, as the day quickly warms once the sun’s up, and even if it’s close to freezing during the night, afternoon temperatures can ramp up to high 20s (70+ F) or more.

It’s very important to check the weather forecast before you travel, as different regions’ climates can vary.

What colour should you wear on safari?

It’s recommended that you wear plain designs in neutral, earthy or natural colours, such as shades of beige, grey, brown or natural greens.

Avoid vibrant, bright colours like orange, red and yellow, or vivid patterns. This is for two reasons:

  • It helps to make you less noticeable to animals.
  • You can get pretty dusty on safari, and natural shades don’t show the dirt so much!

Bright white and full black are also not recommended. This is not only because they show the dust really badly, but because many animals actually only see in black and white, and large gleaming white shapes or dark black ones are very noticeable to them.

The best colours to wear on safari are neutral shades like beige, grey, navy and earthy greens

With that all said, I wouldn’t worry about it too much, and you certainly don’t need to rush out and buy an entire new wardrobe full of khaki and beige. As I just mentioned, many animals only see in black and white, and when you’re inside the car, most only see the car as one large object, and not the people inside.

It’s more important to stick to the rules when you’re on a walking safari and don’t have the protection of the car.

But in general, if you pack plain, neutral-ish colours, you’ll be fine.

Why not wear blue on safari?

Some people recommend not wearing blue on safari. Apart from being a pretty noticeable bright colour, it’s said to attract tsetse flies, which are prevalent in some areas of southern Africa and can deliver a nasty bite and spread disease. They are also thought to prefer black (another reason not to wear it).

That said, my light down jacket is bright blue, and I also took a blue t-shirt and a pale blue cardigan to Kenya, and I wore all three with no problems.

What to wear on safari evenings

Most people like to dress up when they go on holiday, so you might think about throwing a few glamorous dresses, high heels or some party shirts into your suitcase.

But you probably won’t wear them. Even in the luxury camps, most people really don’t dress up for dinner, for four main reasons:

  • At night it’s a good idea to cover your arms and legs to avoid insect bites, so floaty skirts and strappy tops are a bad idea.
  • It can get quite chilly at night, so you’ll probably be more comfortable in trousers and a fleece anyway.
  • You’ll be tired after a long day and an early start; you’ll probably find you can’t be bothered to dress for dinner as you’ll be going to bed soon afterwards anyway.
  • Walking round camp after dark you may run into snakes or spiders, and paths can be muddy and uneven, so high-heels are a definite no-no.

When I was in Botswana in December (the height of their summer) it was still 30+ degrees (86 F) in the evening, so I wore lightweight trousers or a long casual dress and then liberally coated myself with insect repellent. In Kenya in September it was a bit cooler, around low 20s (70 F), so I wore trousers, a t-shirt and a light cardigan, and had my jacket handy for later in the evening as the temperature dropped.

Is it OK to wear jeans on safari?

It’s perfectly fine to bring a pair of jeans for the cooler evenings, especially if you’re travelling in winter when you know it will be chilly at night.

However jeans aren’t recommended for game drives as you’ll probably be too hot in them during the day, and if you need to wash them they’ll take ages to dry.

As a general rule I wouldn’t take jeans on safari but instead bring lightweight trousers. The convertible zip-off ones that turn into shorts are especially good as you can have long pants for cold mornings and safari walks, and convert them into shorts once the day’s warmed up.

Pro tip: Whatever you choose to bring, make sure you have some ‘room to grow’! The food on safari is usually really good and you won’t be doing much exercise, so stretchy waistbands are a good idea!

Can you wear leggings on safari?

Yes, absolutely. Leggings are a great thing to bring on safari because they’re lightweight, wash and dry easily, are comfortable, and protect you from bugs and the sun. Just stick to neutral colours and leave the snazzy activewear designs at home!

I always pack a pair of leggings for safari – and if there’s a gym in the hotel then I can also use them for a workout!

What to pack for safari: bring gym kit if you like to exercise, just in case

What are the best shoes to wear on safari?

As I mentioned above, high heels and smart shoes are definitely not the thing to bring on safari. For game drives it’s fine to wear sandals or light sneakers, and for safari walks you want closed-toed comfortable walking shoes.  You definitely don’t need to buy special safari boots, no matter what the sales people might say.

If your lodge or hotel has a pool, you might want to bring some flipflops (also handy to have for walking around in your tent at night, or for nipping to the bathroom block if you’re staying in a campsite).

Can you wear trainers on safari?

Yes, absolutely. I always pack a pair of Asics Gore-Tex trail trainers that I wear for exercise, when it’s muddy or raining, and for walking or hiking. On game drives and boat cruises, and for walking around the camp in the evening, I have a pair of Skechers Go-Walk sneakers that are super comfortable and easy to slip on and off.

What to pack for the beach in Kenya or Tanzania

Many people like to combine their safari with a few days on the beach, perhaps in Zanzibar in Tanzania, or at Diani or Vipingo in Kenya .

Here’s where you will get the chance to dress up a bit – as if you’re staying in a nice hotel or beach resort destination, there will definitely be opportunities to put on a strappy dress, holiday shirt, or some sparkly sandals.

If you’re planning to hit the beach for a few days at the end of your trip, you’ll definitely want to throw in one or two nice evening outfits. And don’t forget swimwear and a beach cover-up too!

Can you wash clothes on safari?

This is a very important question, and the answer is yes! Almost all safari lodges and camps offer a laundry service and most of the time it’s included in the price of your stay. So you can wash your clothes as often as you like at no extra cost – which means you really don’t need to bring huge amounts of luggage as you can wash and re-wear your clothes several times.

Note that in many places the laundry is done by hand by the hotel staff, dried out in the sun, and ironed using an old-fashioned coal iron. This is yet another reason not to bring anything too delicate or precious, as there’s a small chance it may get damaged during the laundry process.

On safari in Africa you can wear comfortable, casual clothes for almost everything

What sort of underwear should I bring for safari?

Ladies: remember that you may spend many hours bouncing around over unsealed and bumpy roads in the back of a safari car. Being quite an athletic build, this is not something that’s ever bothered me, but I’ve been reliably informed by more curvy girls that a sports bra can be a life-saver in this situation. So if you’re particularly susceptible to bouncing, bring sports bras!

It’s also important to note that the people who handwash your clothes are usually male, and for cultural and hygiene reasons they won’t wash women’s underwear. Ladies will need to bring a small amount of hand wash (though sometimes laundry soap is provided) and wash your own pants and bras in the basin. For this reason it’s a good idea not to bring anything too fancy or delicate: lightweight, quick-drying microfibre underwear is best.

Other things to pack for safari

Of course, packing is not all about clothes. Here are a few other things you won’t want to forget (more in the complete packing list below):

Camera, spare batteries, chargers, plug adapters

Can you imagine going all that way on safari on the trip of a lifetime and then forgetting your phone charger or camera? I know, I’d die!

So definitely make sure you pack all your gadgets, and all the cables and plugs you’ll need to make them work! And then bring spares!

Often hotel rooms and safari tents only have a limited number of plug sockets, so if you have loads of gadgets, it’s a good idea to bring a multi-socket splitter. I recommend one with surge protection : power cuts can happen frequently and if there’s a surge when the power comes back, your devices can get fried. This happened to me the night before my Tanzania safari , so now I’m extra careful!

Inside a luxury safari tent, Kenya

Medication and toiletries

Most of the places you’ll be staying will be out in the bush, with limited access to shops. Make sure you bring all the toiletries, medicines and personal items you’ll need, as once you leave the airport, opportunities to replace anything that’s missing will be very limited.

Do you need malaria tablets for safari?

Large parts of Africa have malaria, including popular safari countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe, so it’s very likely that you may need to take malaria tables on safari. I usually take doxycycline which is cheaper than malarone, but may not be suitable for everyone so speak to your pharmacist or travel clinic.

You can check the malaria risk for the country you’re visiting, as well as any other vaccine requirements at the Travel Health Pro website here .

Some countries also require you to have a proof of yellow fever vaccination – you can check if this is needed on the website above as well. For example, places like Kenya and Tanzania won’t let you in without proof of vaccination if you’ve spent time in a yellow-fever-risk country before arriving. If you have already had your yellow fever jab, make sure you pack the certificate!

Best suitcase for safari

This is important, so pay attention! Many safaris involve internal transfers by tiny plane or even helicopter. They all have pretty strict packing rules, with a maximum of 15 kg weight per person and no hard-shelled suitcases allowed. Luggage must be soft sided, and don’t overpack! You shouldn’t need to anyway, since you can wash everything when you’re there.

Wheels are OK as long as it’s a soft bag, so I recommend a soft holdall with or without wheels, or a wheely backpack like the one I have and love . This one came to Kenya and Botswana with me with no trouble at all.

Packing for safari for photographers

If, like me, you’re travelling with 15 kg of camera gear, don’t stress. The little internal plane operators are used to photographers and will let you put your backpack of gear at the back of the plane. I travelled with 15 kg of hold luggage and another 15 kg of camera gear around Botswana and Kenya, and it was never an issue.

There’ll be more on safari camera gear in a separate post, coming soon!

What should you NOT take on safari?

Now I’ve told you all the things you should bring on safari, here are a few things it’s a good idea to leave at home.

Perfume: No one in your safari car will thank you for dosing yourself liberally with Eau de Whatever, and if you wear a very strong scent it may even allow animals to detect you sooner and run away faster.

Hairdryer: Many safari camps run on solar power and cannot support a hairdryer. Those that can (if they’re on the grid, or running off a generator), will usually provide one that’s suited to the electricity supply. As I said, no one really worries too much about their appearance or cares about what your hair looks like on safari anyway.

Camouflage clothing: This might surprise you, but wearing military-style camo print clothing is a no-no in many African countries, where it’s associated with the military. It’s actually illegal to wear camo gear in Ghana, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Another group photo to help you decide what to pack for safari

Plastic bags: Disposable plastic bags are banned in Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. You should be fine with the little zip-lock one for your liquids on the plane, and I’ve used reusable plastic packing bags many times with no problems, but try to keep plastic bags to a minimum or you may get a fine.

A drone: Unless you have special permission, drones are not allowed in most lodges and African National Parks.

Expensive watches, jewellery, and other valuable items: This doesn’t just apply to African safaris but to all travel. Jewellery can easily get lost, damaged or stolen, so if you care about it, leave it at home.

A hard-shelled suitcase: As mentioned above, all safari companies ask you to bring a soft bag or at most a wheeled soft holdall , as these are much easier to pack into the small luggage spaces on planes and in cars. You will not be thanked if you bring rigid-sided luggage.

Where to buy safari clothing

For the most part, you don’t need any specialist clothing for safari. You can wear your own normal clothes. However, there are some great companies that do excellent clothes for travel, in suitable colours, and made from practical fabrics that are sweat-wicking, comfortable and don’t crease.

My favourite brands for travel clothes are The North Face , Patagonia , Rab , Mountain Equipment , Arc’teryx and Craghoppers , and my favourite places to shop in the UK are Ellis Brigham and Cotswold Outdoor , which stock all these brands at competitive prices, have high-street stores where you can get advice and try stuff on, and often have good end-of-season sales too.

What to wear on safari: my Africa packing list

So now we’ve gone through the details, here’s what I would pack for a 10-day or two-week safari in Africa.

What to wear on safari: Clothes

  • T-shirts in neutral or earthy colours x 5. The green t-shirt in the photo above is by Mountain Equipment . I love it so much I bought three!
  • Long trousers x 1 pair. I really like my lightweight ones from The North Face .
  • Shorts x 1 pair.
  • Convertible trousers that zip-off into shorts, or a second pair of shorts . North Face and Craghoppers both do good convertible trousers for men and women .
  • Leggings . I’m a big fan of Sweaty Betty.
  • Long-sleeved shirt for covering up in bright sunshine.
  • Lightweight jumper or cardigan for chilly evenings.
  • Lightweight jacket , fleece or mid layer for cold nights. I have a fleece from Arc’teryx and a mine is a Nano puff from  Patagonia .
  • Waterproof jacket . I have two, a lovely Zeta LT by  Arc’teryx  and a packable Meridien jacket by  Rab .
  • Dress or smart shirt for the evening if you’re going to a city or the beach (x2). For packable jersey or lightweight viscose dresses I love Boden , Sugarhill Brighton and Joanie Clothing .
  • Gym kit – if you think you’ll need or use it. But many safari camps don’t have fitness equipment and you can’t go for a run in the bush or you might get chased by a predator!
  • Sports bras or comfortable wireless bralettes x 3.
  • Underwear x 7. If you’re staying for longer you’ll need to handwash. I recommend something quick-drying and non-delicate like these microfibre ones from M&S .
  • Swimwear . I get cute bikinis and swimwear from M&S , Next , or Pour Moi .
  • Sarong or cover up (if you’re spending time on the beach)
  • Sandals or flip flops . I love my walking sandals by Teva .
  • Trainers or walking shoes for exercise and walking safaris. Mine are Gore-Tex trail trainers from Asics .
  • Soft sneakers for walking round the camp, game drives and boat cruises. I’m a big fan of Skechers Go Walks .

Pro tip: if you’re going to the beach and plan to do a lot of snorkelling, pack a rash vest or t-shirt to swim in. The sun is super strong and we all got very burnt even though we were wearing Factor 50!

What to wear on safari: layers and neutral colours are best

What to pack for safari in winter

If the forecast is for cold weather, I would add:

  • Another long-sleeved top or baselayer .
  • A warmer, packable insulated jacket .
  • A pair of jeans.
  • Beanie hat.

What to pack for safari: Accessories

  • Baseball cap or hat. My cap is this one this one by Buff and I really like it.
  • Scarf or buff to keep dust off (and you can dip it in water to cool you down on very hot days)
  • Headphones or ear buds (for the plane), you won’t need them on the actual safari! I have these ones which are pretty good and much cheaper than Apple ones.
  • Eye mask and ear plugs (if you’re a light sleeper).
  • Camera, batteries, memory cards and charger
  • Charger cables for all your devices
  • Portable phone charger. Mine is this one from Anker .
  • Plug adapter for the country you’re going to, or a universal plug adapter
  • Plug splitter or 3-way adapter with surge protection
  • Refillable water bottle (though some safari companies provide them, so check). An insulated water bottle will keep your water colder for longer on hot days.
  • A padlock for your luggage to protect you from airport thieves

Three people posing for a photo while on safari in Botswana

Safari packing list: Toiletries

As well as all your usual toiletries and medications, don’t forget:

  • Suncream. I swear by  Riemann P20  because it’s hard wearing and you only need to apply it once a day. Or for the best face SPF you will ever find, that’s non-greasy and non-orange (!), I love  this one from the Body Shop .
  • Insect repellant (though this is often provided in camp).
  • Malaria tablets ( check to see if these are required in your destination )

Pro tip: Luggage goes missing more and more frequently these days, so pack your medication or anything else vital in your hand luggage.

Hopefully this post has helped you figure out what to wear on safari

  • What to Wear on Safari in Tanzania – A Packing List

Blog , Africa , Tanzania , Tips & Resources / February 15, 2024 by Monica / Leave a Comment

If you are headed to Tanzania, but are not quite sure what to wear on safari, I am here to help you out. Here is exactly what to pack – and what not to pack – for a Tanzania safari.

Lions drinking from a pool, seen on safari in Tanzania, in the Serengeti.

When I went on my very first Tanzania camping safari , the experience was truly awe-inspiring. The chance to see so many animals in the wild that I’d previously only seen on television was, in a word, breathtaking.

While in Tanzania, I saw The Big Five (and then some!), and to date have been on wildlife safaris in four countries now. It never gets less amazing!

However, before taking this trip, I didn’t know what to wear on safari in Tanzania. Did I need khakis and a safari hat? Or stiff rugged boots? I honestly wasn’t sure and had to do a ton of research before I left.

Luckily, after my time in Tanzania, I know exactly what your safari packing list must include. Three main topics this guide will highlight are the importance of comfort, safety, and blending into the environment.

Note: This packing list is written from a woman’s point of view, but all of the items below can be swapped out for the men’s version, too.

Table of Contents

Weather in Tanzania

First and foremost, to properly pack, you must be prepared for the diverse climates within the Serengeti and beyond. Remember that Tanzania is in the southern hemisphere, which means that the seasons are reversed from the USA.

Throughout the year, temperatures in Serengeti National Park and surrounding regions remain relatively stable, hovering around 82 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. They then drop significantly at night, often cutting the daytime temperature in half.

Tanzania experiences its rainy season in the months of March, April, and May. Despite this, you will likely have clear days and the probability of spotting plenty of animals in the Serengeti . The rainy season tends to be slightly warmer and more humid, contrasting with the drier heat of the dry season.

The prime wildlife viewing months in Tanzania span the dry season, from late June to October. This period offers optimal opportunities to spot elusive species like leopards, driven to water holes by the scarcity of rain.

Additionally, June and July mark the peak of the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti, which is exactly why I chose to visit during this time.

Adult and baby elephants seen on safari in the Serengeti in Tanzania.

General Packing Tips for Tanzania Safari

First and foremost, comfort Is King. You will have very long days in the car during game drives, and there are few designated areas that you will actually exit the vehicle. So be sure to dress for comfort over style.

Be sure to pack enough outfits for every day of the safari, plus an extra outfit or two. You will have no chance to do laundry, particularly on a camping safari like I did, because you are moving campsites almost daily.

Consider the color of the clothing you pack. It is ideal that all members of the safari wear greens and browns and blend in with the landscape, lest you scare the wildlife away. For me this was easy to follow, as I have a lot of earth-toned clothing anyway.

Tsetse flies are attracted to dark colors and bright colors, but in particular to the color blue. So don’t pack whites, blues, reds, yellows, and pinks. I went primarily earth-tones with a pale bit of color here or there, and was totally fine.

Important: camouflage clothing is illegal in Tanzania unless you are military personnel. Though it blends in with the surroundings, do not pack it.

A wild zebra in the Serengeti Tanzania.

Your Tanzania Safari Packing List

Here are the specific items I packed in my luggage for Tanzania. I consider each of them to be safari essentials, and have packed them for all subsequent safaris, too.

This mixture of clothing will allow for layering to combat any and all temperature fluctuations throughout the day.

1. The correct bottoms.

Remember, our two greatest concerns are comfort and color. For me, that meant two types of pants were a must.

First, a pair of thicker bottoms that resemble jeans but have some stretch worked out great for me. Check out these thick stretchy pants for a perfect option. These are your more rugged bottoms for hiking or walking. Be sure to purchase earth tones like olive green or tan if possible.

Second, I had several pairs of basic leggings. You probably already own these but the linked pair comes in shades of green and tan as well as black. Trust me, these were necessary for long days in the Jeep.

And third, I recommend one pair of comfy sweatpants for both longer car days as well as at night. As discussed, the nighttime temperatures can drop. These came in handy at the Ngorongoro Crater campsite, which is very cold because of the high elevation.

2. An array of tops.

Be sure to pack both sleeveless and short sleeved shirts as you will likely drive through many different climates. My safari was 6 days long so I packed enough for the trip plus one extra for my “laundry day.” It worked out well for me and I did the same on safari in Chitwan, Nepal and in Namibia.

Some great and affordable shirt options I recommend are this set of green and black tank tops and several short sleeve tees ( this one has a nice knot-detail, making it way more fun than a basic tee.)

Then on top of those, you should have a long sleeve sweater or a hooded sweatshirt on hand. I actually brought one of each and was glad I did. Remember, layering is key because of all the temperature changes you’ll experience.

Pro Tip: If visiting local communities, it is highly advised to dress modestly, with covered shoulders and covered knees. When inside resorts and tourist hotels, you can be slightly more relaxed, while still respecting the local culture.

3. Footwear.

Though you’ll primarily be in the car on safari days, I found it useful to have a comfortable pair of tennis shoes or trekking sandals. My favorite pair has been on almost every continent with me and is still going strong!

Additionally, I recommend a pair of basic flip flops, both for the car rides and the campsite showers, if you book a camping safari .

Basically, sturdy, comfortable walking shoes or trekking sandals are key. Additionally, bring both thin and thick socks so you have options as you drive deeper into the Serengeti.

4. Sun protection.

The sun can be strong in Tanzania, so protective items will be key – especially if you are headed to Zanzibar post-safari. Beyond sunscreen, here is what else you should pack for your safari in Tanzania.

First, a wide-brimmed hat is a must. The hat was multipurpose or me – besides just keeping the sun at bay, it also kept my long hair somewhat in place while we drove in the open-top vehicle.

The first day I didn’t wear my hat, and my hair turned into a dusty and tangled mess.(Did I mention, you should bring a really good detangling conditioner, especially if you have long hair? Yeah… do that!)

Also pack a pair of sunglasses as well as a lightweight scarf for sun protection. The scarf, by the way, can help block wind and dust, too.

5. Outerwear options.

As I’ve mentioned, layering is going to be important on safari days.

Pack a puffy winter coat that folds down small, so that it won’t take up too much room in your luggage. Ngorongoro Crater was freezing cold overnight, so I was very thankful I had one with me!

I’m a huge fan of this winter jacket, which packs down super small. I have it in both a bright and a muted color palette.

I also recommend a fleece jacket and a waterproof shell for cooler evenings or rainy days.

Gear To Pack for Your Safari

Besides clothing, the next most important items to pack for Tanzania is gear. We’re talking camera gear, binoculars, and more. Here is what I couldn’t live without!

1. Binoculars.

Maybe like you, I did not own a pair of binoculars before my first safari. And, it wasn’t an item that I wanted to invest hundreds of dollars on, because it’s not something that I will use super often.

But I also didn’t want to cheap-out on them, because I wanted them to work well for both this Tanzania safari, but also into the future.

So, I did a lot of research ( seriously, let me save you days of your life .) I ended up buying a pair of binoculars that had the same prism as the most expensive brands, but from a lesser known company, so I wasn’t just paying for the name.

In the end, these binoculars worked very well for me, and have now been used in three countries and counting. I’m sure a professional would give you plenty of other factors to think about, but these were beyond great for me.

2. A good camera.

An African safari is truly a bucket-list item, and in some cases a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Therefore, you should definitely bring a high quality camera.

The Sony Alpha series is absolutely amazing and I have as close to zero complaints as humanly possible. My beloved Sony is hands-down the best camera I’ve ever owned. Pair it with a sharp lens and you are golden.

3. An action camera.

A teeny-tiny camera is perfect for filming and takes up next to no room in your bag. The GoPro Hero 9 and beyond are great for producing SHARP video even on bumpy terrain. Basically I used to GoPro primarily for filming and then my bigger camera for shooting.

4. Toiletries and wellness

Finally, you should remember to pack wellness items and toiletries, as you will not likely find them while on safari. Here are several items not to forget.

  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Small flashlight or headlamp ( my headlamp was invaluable at campsites!)
  • Insect repellent
  • Anti-bacterial hand sanitizer
  • Tissue paper
  • Body wipes such as these biodegradable wipes for dirt and grime
  • A small travel towel
  • Personal toiletries
  • Small first aid kit including things like ibuprofen, antimalaria pills if needed, allergy medicine, band-aids, stomach ache remedy, antibiotic cream, diarrhea medicine, and any prescription medications you need on hand.

One of the most important things to consider when packing for your safari in Tanzania is the appropriate attire to wear. The ideal outfit should provide comfort, protection, and functionality. One staple item that should be included in your clothing is a pair of khaki pants.

Another reason why khaki pants are perfect for safari is that they are versatile enough to wear during both day and night game drives. The neutral color of khaki pants also makes them blend in well with the natural environment, making it easier to observe wildlife up close without disturbing them.

When choosing the right pair of khaki pants to take on safari, it is important to look for features that will enhance your experience. For example, consider pants with multiple pockets that can hold your essentials such as a camera, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Elastic waistbands and drawstrings can provide additional comfort and flexibility when moving around.

In conclusion, khaki pants are a must-have item when packing for a safari in Tanzania. They not only offer comfort, protection, and flexibility but are also suitable for both day and night game drives. A safari in Tanzania can be an amazingly life-changing experience. With an abundance of natural beauty, the country is home to many wildlife parks, nature reserves, and sanctuaries that offer once-in-a-lifetime sightseeing opportunities. However, a successful safari requires some advanced preparation. One of the essential things to consider when packing for your Tanzanian safari is your sun hat.

The sun hat is a must-have item for any safari enthusiast. Aside from being a necessary accessory, it also provides excellent protection against the sun's harmful UV rays. When choosing a sun hat, be sure to consider the size and shape of the hat. A wide-brimmed hat is ideal for safari, as it can protect your face, neck, and ears from the sun.

It is also essential to choose a hat made from breathable material such as cotton or linen. This is because the temperatures in Tanzania can get quite hot, and a hat that does not breathe can make you feel uncomfortable and sweaty. A breathable hat can keep you cool and refreshed even in the hot sun.

Another factor to consider when selecting your hat is its color. Neutral colors like beige, grey, or green are an excellent option, as they blend well with the natural environment while also being stylish. Bright and bold colors may be attractive, but they can attract unwanted attention from animals like bees.

In addition to the proper size, shape, material, and color, it is also essential to consider the durability and functionality of the hat. The hat should be able to withstand harsh weather conditions, such as wind or rain. Also, it should fit securely on your head without flopping around, as this can be a distraction.

In conclusion, a sun hat is an essential item for anyone planning a safari in Tanzania. It provides excellent protection against harmful UV rays, keeps you cool and refreshed, and complements your safari attire. When selecting your hat, be sure to consider its size, shape, material, color, durability, and functionality. With the right sun hat, you can enjoy a comfortable, refreshing, and unforgettable safari experience.

Dressing for Desert Heat: What to Wear in Scottsdale

First and foremost, make sure that the sneakers are comfortable and offer ample support. You will be spending long hours on your feet, so it is essential to choose a pair of shoes that won't cause any discomfort or blisters. Look for sneakers that have a cushioned sole and provide good arch support to reduce the risk of foot injuries.

Next, consider the terrain and weather conditions that you will be facing. Tanzania can have a mix of dry and wet conditions, so it is important to choose shoes that can withstand both. Sneakers made from breathable materials like mesh or nylon can be ideal for warm days, while waterproof options can be vital to keeping your feet dry during wet weather.

Another factor to consider is the color of your sneakers. Bright colors may not be the best choice, as they can attract unwanted attention or scare away wildlife. Earthy tones like brown or green can help you blend in with your surroundings and avoid disrupting the natural environment.

Lastly, it is essential to break in your sneakers before you go on your safari. Wear them around the house or on short walks to ensure that they conform to the shape of your feet and don't cause any discomfort. This will help to prevent blisters and ensure that you can enjoy your safari to the fullest!

Dress to Impress: What to Wear to the Driving Range

When planning a safari trip to Tanzania, it's important to pack appropriate clothing that will be comfortable and practical for the adventure ahead. One of the key items to include in your luggage is a long-sleeve shirt. This garment not only offers protection from the sun and insects but also keeps you cool in the hot African climate.

There are different types of long-sleeve shirts suitable for a safari trip. Firstly, it's essential to choose a shirt made from lightweight, breathable fabric such as cotton or linen. This will prevent you from feeling weighed down or overheated while out in the savannah. Additionally, a long-sleeve shirt with ventilation panels or mesh inserts will let air circulate around your body, helping regulate your temperature.

Another consideration when selecting a long-sleeve shirt for a safari trip is the color. It's advisable to choose muted or neutral tones like khaki or olive green, which blend in with the surroundings and don't attract the attention of animals. Brightly colored clothes like red or blue can alarm animals and disrupt your chance to see wildlife up close.

In summary, a long-sleeve shirt is an essential item for safari trips in Tanzania. When selecting this garment, look for lightweight, breathable fabric with ventilation panels and muted colors. Additionally, consider purchasing a long-sleeve shirt with SPF protection to help shield your skin from the sun's rays. By packing a long-sleeve shirt, you'll be well equipped for the exciting and adventurous safari ahead.

Couples Photos: Matching or Coordinated Outfits for a Picture-Perfect Look

When packing for a safari in Tanzania, many travelers face the difficult decision of what to wear. While comfortable and functional clothing is key, it's also important to dress appropriately for the weather conditions and natural surroundings. Cargo shorts are one of the most popular and versatile options for safari attire in Tanzania. Here are a few reasons why:

First and foremost, cargo shorts are incredibly comfortable. With their lightweight and breathable material, they allow you to move around freely and stay cool in the hot African sun. They also provide ample pockets to store your essentials, such as sunscreen, insect repellent, and snacks, so you can keep your hands free while exploring.

Another advantage of cargo shorts for safari wear is their neutral and understated style. While bright and colorful clothing may be fashionable, it can also attract unwanted attention from animals and insects. Neutral colors such as beige, khaki, and olive green blend in seamlessly with the natural surroundings, making you less visible and less likely to disturb the wildlife.

When choosing cargo shorts for your safari adventure, make sure to opt for high-quality and durable materials that can withstand the rigors of the trip. Avoid synthetic materials that can cause discomfort in hot weather, and look for shorts with deep pockets and sturdy closures that can keep your belongings safe and secure. With these tips in mind, cargo shorts can be an ideal addition to your safari packing list.

Deposition Dress Code: How to Dress Professionally and Comfortably

While planning a safari in Tanzania, it's crucial to pack proper gear for an unforgettable experience. One of the essential items you shouldn't leave behind is a pair of binoculars. During the safari, you'll get the chance to see nature's wonders up close, and having binoculars will enhance your experience.

When selecting binoculars for your safari in Tanzania, consider the magnification and objective lens diameter. Opt for models with 8x or 10x magnification and 40-42mm objective lenses for clear image resolution. The higher the magnification, the closer you can get to the wildlife, but it also makes it challenging to stabilize the image.

Additionally, choose binoculars with anti-glare coatings to improve the image's clarity in bright sunlight. Coatings like anti-reflective and anti-fog prevent glare and condensation that could interfere with your view.

The weight of the binoculars is also crucial, as you'll be carrying them around for extended periods. Lightweight and compact models are ideal for safari trips, and many binoculars come with protective cases and straps for hands-free carrying.

It's also advisable to practice using your binoculars before your journey to avoid struggling on sighting opportunities. Observe faraway objects like aircraft or birds in your backyard to familiarize yourself with the focus and magnification capabilities.

In conclusion, binoculars are vital for spotting wildlife on a safari trip in Tanzania. Consider factors like magnification, objective lens diameter, anti-glare coatings, and weight when selecting the ideal pair. Practice using them beforehand to make the most out of your safari experience.

Styling Tips: Perfect Shoes for Your Bodycon Dress

When planning what to wear on safari in Tanzania, it is important to consider the weather conditions. The country is characterized by a tropical climate that is generally warm and humid throughout the year, with temperatures averaging around 28°C. However, during the dry season (June to October), temperatures can drop significantly in the early morning and evening. For this reason, we recommend packing a lightweight jacket to stay warm during these cooler periods and to protect against any sudden weather changes.

When choosing a jacket, we recommend opting for a lightweight, breathable option that is also water-resistant to protect against any unexpected rainfall. A quality safari jacket will also have multiple pockets to keep your belongings safe, while still maintaining a fashionable and functional look. Neutral and earthy colors are also best to blend in with the natural surroundings and avoid startling any wildlife.

It's important to note that while a jacket may be necessary for the cooler mornings and evenings, it may also get too warm during the day when the sun is out. For this reason, it is best to choose a jacket that can be easily removed and packed away as needed. Additionally, wearing layers is the key to staying comfortable under changing weather conditions. A lightweight shirt or tee underneath will give you the ability to remove your jacket and stay cool when temperatures rise.

In addition to the practical benefits, wearing a jacket can also protect your skin from insect bites and scratches from moving through brush or trees. The right jacket can enhance your overall safari experience by keeping you comfortable, safe and adding an extra layer of protection against harm.

In conclusion, a lightweight jacket is an essential part of any safari packing list for Tanzania. We recommend choosing a breathable, multi-pocketed, water-resistant option that can easily be layered over your safari clothes. Wearing a jacket also adds a layer of protection against insect bites or scratches while exploring the beautiful wildlife parks of Tanzania.

Fashionable Layers for a Cozy Country Concert in Winter

Going on a safari in Tanzania requires a lot of planning, including the type of clothes and shoes that you need to bring. One of the most important things to consider when it comes to footwear is safari boots. These boots are specifically designed to provide the necessary support, protection, and comfort that you will need during your trip.

One of the main features of safari boots is their sturdy soles, which are designed to grip onto uneven ground, protect your feet from sharp rocks or thorns, and provide stability on slippery surfaces. This is especially important if you plan to go on walking safaris, which involve trekking through the bush to get up close with the wildlife.

Another important factor to consider when choosing safari boots is their breathability. The hot and humid climate of Tanzania can be uncomfortable, so it's important to choose boots that allow your feet to stay cool and dry. Look for boots with mesh panels or perforations that promote airflow and prevent sweat buildup.

Lastly, when it comes to sizing, it's recommended to go up a half or full size to accommodate for thick socks and any potential foot swelling. It's absolutely essential to wear your safari boots before your trip to break them in and ensure they are comfortable for long hours of walking.

In conclusion, safari boots are a crucial item to pack when going on a Tanzania safari. Make sure to invest in a quality pair that offers durability, support, and breathability. And don't forget to break them in beforehand, so you can enjoy your safari to the fullest.

Choosing the Right Jewelry: What Colors Complement a Green Dress?

When choosing a pair of sunglasses for your safari, it's important to consider a few factors. First and foremost, you want to ensure that they provide adequate UV protection. Look for sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection to keep your eyes safe from harmful rays.

Another important factor to consider is the lens color. While many people prefer traditional dark lenses for sunglasses, green or brown lenses are actually better for safari. These colors provide better contrast and help enhance colors, which is especially helpful when viewing wildlife.

It's also important to consider the fit of the sunglasses. You don't want them to slip or fall off while you're in the middle of a safari adventure. Look for sunglasses with a secure fit that feel comfortable and won't slide around. Some sunglasses even come with a strap that you can attach to keep them secure.

Finally, consider the style of sunglasses that you prefer. There are many options available, from sporty wraparound styles to more fashion-forward designs. Choose a pair that fits your personal style and that you'll be comfortable wearing throughout your safari adventure.

Overall, sunglasses are an essential accessory for any safari adventure in Tanzania. With the right pair, you can protect your eyes from the bright African sun and enhance your overall safari experience.

Band Camp Dress Code: Tips for Practical and Stylish Outfits

A safari vest is an essential item to have when going on a safari adventure in Tanzania. It is a versatile piece of clothing that provides practicality and style all in one. The vest is usually made from lightweight and breathable materials such as cotton or linen, making it comfortable to wear in hot and humid climates.

One of the primary reasons to wear a safari vest is for the convenience it offers. The vest has multiple pockets that can hold items such as a camera, binoculars, phone, and even snacks, making them easily accessible. With a safari vest, you don't have to carry a backpack, which can be cumbersome and restrict your movements when taking photos or walking.

The vest is also a fashionable item that adds a touch of sophistication to your outfit. Safari vests come in various designs and colors to suit different preferences. You can choose a neutral color such as khaki or beige, which blends well with the natural environment, or opt for a more vibrant shade that stands out and adds a pop of color to your outfit.

While a safari vest is undoubtedly practical and stylish, it is also important to consider its safety features. Some safari vests are designed with hidden pockets or flaps to keep valuables safe and secure. The vest should also fit well, allowing for easy movement and preventing it from getting caught on branches or bushes when walking.

Overall, a safari vest is a must-have item for anyone going on a safari adventure in Tanzania. It offers practicality, style, and safety, enhancing your overall safari experience. Whether you are a seasoned traveler or a first-time safari goer, a safari vest is an investment that you won't regret.

Game Time Attire: What to Wear for Senior Night Football

When preparing for a safari in Tanzania, one of the essential items that you must bring with you is a wide-brimmed hat. The African sun is intense, and it can quickly cause damage to your skin, especially if you’re not used to the heat. A hat with a broad brim is an excellent way to protect your face and neck from the sun’s harmful rays.

Aside from its practical purpose, a wide-brimmed hat can also add some style to your safari outfit. Opt for a hat that is made from breathable materials like cotton or straw. A stylish safari hat can not only protect you but also help you stand out from the crowd with a touch of elegance and sophistication.

Another advantage of wearing a wide-brimmed hat on your safari is the added convenience of not having to worry about your hair. The dust and wind on safari can make your hair frizzy or tangled, but with a hat on, you can keep your tresses safely tucked away under the brim.

It's important to choose a hat that fits your head perfectly to avoid it flying off in the wind while you’re on a game drive or walk. Opting for extra features such as an adjustable chin strap can guarantee that your hat remains secure, no matter how strong the winds may blow.

In conclusion, a wide-brimmed hat can be the perfect accessory for a safari in Tanzania. It’ll protect you from the African sun and the wind, and add style to your outfit. Remember to pick a hat with an adjustable chin strap and made from breathable materials, and you’ll be all set for an adventure on the savannah.

Autumn Fashion Guide: What to Wear in Mykonos in October

When going on a safari in Tanzania, it is important to pack appropriate clothing that not only provides comfort but also serves as protection against the sun and mosquitoes. One item that many safari goers swear by is convertible pants.

Another great feature of convertible pants is that they offer ample protection against the sun. The material used to make these pants is often UPF 50+, offering maximum protection against the sun's harmful rays. This can be particularly useful when spending long hours in the sun on a safari.

All in all, if you're planning on going on a safari in Tanzania, convertible pants should definitely be on your packing list. They are versatile, comfortable, and provide excellent protection against the sun and mosquitoes. With their unique features, they make for an essential item for any safari goer.

Frequently asked questions.

It is recommended to wear comfortable and lightweight clothing that wicks away sweat, such as a long-sleeved shirt and pants made of breathable fabric. Neutral colors like khaki, green, or brown are best to blend in with the natural surroundings. Closed-toe shoes with good traction and sun protection accessories like a hat and sunglasses are also essential.

While shorts are technically allowed, they are not recommended as they leave your legs exposed to the sun and potential insect bites. It is better to wear long pants that can be rolled up when necessary, like convertible pants.

Yes, it is advisable to wear layers as the temperature can fluctuate throughout the day. A lightweight jacket or fleece is recommended for early morning and evening game drives when it can get chilly. Safari Style Guide: Dressing Right for a Tanzania Safari

What to Wear on a Tanzania Safari: Your Comprehensive Guide Struggling to decide what to pack and wear for your Tanzania safari adventure? Prior to embarking on your safari in Tanzania, investing some time in research and careful wardrobe planning can spare you numerous hassles throughout your journey. By selecting the appropriate safari attire and packing wisely, you can ensure a trouble-free African safari experience, allowing you to fully enjoy your adventure without worry. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore in detail what to pack and wear for your Tanzania safari to ensure you’re fully prepared for this remarkable journey.

What to Wear on Safari: Dressing Smart for Tanzania’s Varied Climates

Preparing for a safari in Tanzania requires careful consideration of the diverse climate. The dry season, from June to October, demands lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colors, with sun protection and sturdy footwear. In contrast, the wet season (November to May) necessitates quick-drying attire, waterproof gear, and insect repellent clothing. Regional variations in the northern circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro) mean packing layered clothing and warm wear due to cooler temperatures, along with essential photography equipment. In the southern circuit (Selous, Ruaha), lightweight, breathable clothing and sun protection are crucial for hot and humid conditions, while comfortable footwear is vital for bushwalking. Understanding these seasonal and regional climate nuances will ensure you’re well-prepared for an enriching Tanzanian safari experience.

Must-Have Clothing Items for a Safari in Tanzania Packing for a safari in Tanzania requires a thoughtful selection of clothing items. Here’s a list of essentials to consider:

  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: Your safari footwear should provide support and comfort for long walks. Additionally, pack a pair of sandals or flip-flops for relaxing moments.
  • Casual and Loose-Fitting Clothing: Opt for khaki, brown, beige, and green colors made from natural fabrics like cotton. These colors help you blend with the environment and stay cool.
  • Light Cotton Tops and T-Shirts: Lightweight cotton tops and T-shirts are perfect for the warm Tanzanian climate.
  • Long-Sleeved Cotton Shirts/Blouses and Pants: Long-sleeved clothing offers protection from the sun and insects. Ensure they cover your body completely.
  • Fleece or Sweater: Evenings and early mornings can get cool, so a fleece or sweater is essential for added warmth.
  • Swimsuit: Some lodges have pools, so packing a swimsuit might come in handy.
  • Special Night Outfit: If you plan on a special evening, bring along an outfit for the occasion.
  • Cotton Socks and Underwear: Comfortable socks and underwear are essential for daily comfort.
  • Hat, Bandana, or Scarf: Protect yourself from the sun and dust with a hat or scarf.
  • Cold Weather Gear (June – August): If traveling during the colder season, pack a heavy sweater, gloves, and a toque. Consider a lightweight and waterproof jacket or windbreaker as well. Colors to Wear on Safari in Tanzania Choosing the right colors for your safari attire is crucial: • Recommended Colors: Opt for light shades like green, brown, tan, or khaki. These colors blend into the forest, providing camouflage and comfort. • Colors to Avoid: Bright-white clothing can draw attention and potentially scare away wildlife. Avoid wearing black and dark blue clothes known to attract tsetse flies. Military clothing or hats are forbidden unless you are a member of the military. Daytime Safari Attire: Dressing for Game Drives During the day on safari: • Wear casual, loose-fitting clothing in lighter, natural colors. • Dark and bright colors may attract insects and distract animals. • Opt for khaki, brown, beige, and green attire. • Cotton pants or shorts, lightweight tops, and comfortable shoes or sandals are ideal. • Consider bringing a swimsuit for lodge pools. Evening Safari Attire: Staying Comfortable In the evenings: • Be prepared for cooler temperatures, especially in certain areas like the Ngorongoro Crater rim. • Protect yourself from mosquitoes by wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, socks, and shoes. • Luxury lodges often allow casual clothing for dining, but you may want to bring one special outfit for a night out. • Pack a fleece or sweater for added warmth during cool evenings. • Consider a lightweight and waterproof jacket or windbreaker. Laundry Guidelines: Most camps and lodges provide laundry services, enabling you to have all your attire cleaned with most, if not all, of these facilities include ironing in the process. If you have delicate garments susceptible to burning or damage during ironing, kindly inform the camp or lodge staff. Furthermore, many individuals prefer to handle their own undergarments. In such cases, it can be beneficial to bring along some liquid handwashing soap for this specific purpose.

What not to Pack for your Tanzania safari While we have provided a detailed list of clothing recommendations for safaris, below is a summarized list of clothing items you should not pack for your Tanzania safari: By avoiding these types of clothing, you’ll not only ensure your comfort and safety but also contribute to a more enjoyable and respectful wildlife viewing experience during your Tanzania safari

  • Bright Colors: Steer clear of vibrant or neon hues, as they can startle wildlife and hinder your ability to observe animals in their natural habitat. Instead, opt for neutral and earthy tones like khaki, beige, and olive green.
  • White Clothing: White garments tend to stand out and can quickly become soiled in the dusty or muddy terrain of a safari. White attire can also attract insects such as tsetse flies.
  • Camouflage: Although you want to blend into your surroundings, avoid donning full camouflage outfits. In Tanzania, wearing camouflage attire may be against the law, and it might be mistaken for military or poacher gear.
  • Shorts and Skirts: It’s advisable to skip shorts or skirts during game drives and bushwalks, as they leave your legs vulnerable to potential insect bites, thorns, and sunburn. Opt for long pants for superior protection.
  • Tight or Revealing Clothing: Snug or revealing attire can be uncomfortable during extended hours in a vehicle and may not shield you adequately from the elements. Loose-fitting, breathable clothing is a wiser choice.
  • Noisy Clothing: Avoid clothing with noisy Velcro, zippers, or buttons that could create disruptions when you move. Maintaining silence is crucial for effective wildlife observation.
  • Heavy Perfumes and Strong Scents: Strong scents, including perfumes and deodorants, can disrupt animals’ highly sensitive sense of smell. Choose unscented products to avoid disturbance.
  • Jewelry: Leave your valuable jewelry at home. It can attract undesired attention and isn’t necessary for a safari.
  • Impractical Footwear: High heels or shoes not designed for rugged terrain should be avoided. Sturdy, comfortable footwear is essential for a successful safari. Don’t Forget Your Safari Accessories Safari Hats: Shielding from the African Sun Your Tanzania safari begins with protecting yourself from the relentless African sun. A wide-brimmed safari hat not only shields your face and neck from harmful UV rays but also adds a touch of style to your ensemble. Sunglasses: Shielding Your Eyes Invest in a quality pair of sunglasses with UV protection to shield your eyes from the intense African sun. Don’t forget a secure sunglass strap to keep them in place during your adventures. Binoculars: Enhancing Wildlife Viewing Enhance your wildlife viewing experience with a pair of binoculars. They allow you to observe animals from a safe distance without disrupting their natural behavior. Camera and Gear: Capturing Memories If you’re a photography enthusiast, don’t leave your camera and essential accessories behind. Tanzania’s breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife provide unmatched photo opportunities. Insect Repellent: Keeping Unwanted Guests at Bay Tanzania’s wilderness is teeming with various insects. Carry effective insect repellent to protect yourself from itchy bites and ensure a more pleasant experience.

Conclusion Selecting the right clothing for your Tanzania safari is essential for your comfort, safety, and overall enjoyment. By following these guidelines, you’ll be well-prepared for this unforgettable African adventure. Whether you’re observing wildlife or dining under the stars, your attire will contribute to a memorable experience in the heart of Tanzania’s stunning landscapes. Having backpacked solo through this country (and the rest of East Africa too), you can rest assured this list is based on personal experience and not just pie-in-the-sky guestimations!

The only topic I don’t cover in detail is climbing Kilimajrio, because while this packing list will cover you for most hiking circumstances – there’s no doubt you’ll need specialist equipment to tackle the giant of Kili – which your tour organiser is best placed to fill you in on.

How to pack light for tanzania.

Tanzania, Serengeti, Entrance

Before I get onto the actual checklist of what you should pack for your trip to Tanzania, I wanted to write a quick few tips to cover some specific questions you might have.

First up this packing list is designed to be lightweight i.e. it’s ideal for backpackers, but also for anyone else heading to this country who doesn’t want to haul massive suitcases around.

If you’re moving about Tanzania, which you definitely should, then lugging massive bags on and off safari vehicles, buses or flights is simply no fun, so this packing list is designed to make sure you have everything you need for every inch of this country, without being too weighed down!

And if you manage to condense your stuff down well, then this whole Tanzania packing list below should fit into a 40-50l backpack.

I never take anything bigger, even when I’m travelling for 6 months at a time, so you’ve got no excuse!

This 50l Atmos backpack from Osprey makes a great option and would be brilliantly accompanied by some good packing cubes!

Yes these guys are the answer to all your packing problems my friends, and if you want to compress your gear to take up less space, as well as have it nicely organised, I highly suggest you get some!

I absolutely love these  packing cubes and personally would never consider heading off to East Africa, or indeed anywhere, without them.

What to Wear on a Tanzania Safari?

Absolute Africa, Tanzania, Truck

So while we’re on the subject of keeping the luggage weight down, it’s worth pointing out that the main checklist below does detail everything you need if you plan to safari in Tanzania too, which I highly suggest you do!

The main overall advice here is to bring layers that are thin but still protect you from humidity, harsh UV rays and insects etc.

A thin, light waterproof / windproof jacket will be very handy when packing for a safari at dawn or dusk and, as always, I recommend garments with lots of pockets so you have easy access to things like tissues, camera, sanitiser, snacks etc.

A silk sleeping bag liner will also be useful, especially if you enjoying any multi-day safaris on a budget, most of which involve camping.

And no matter whether you’re tackling a big adventure safari in a remote park, or just a day activity close to Moshi or Arusha, an active camera like the Go Pro will be ideal with its waterproof, compact and durable attributes.

What to Wear in Zanzibar?

Zanzibar, Stone Town, Jaws Corner Flags

If you’re visiting the capital of Zanzibar, Stone Town (which you definitely should by the way!), then you’ll need to dress more conservatively in this traditional town, which has a majority Muslim population.

I’d advise leggings with a tunic over the top, or trousers with a T-shirt.

I found it ok to have my arms exposed here, but certainly, you’ll want to cover your shoulders, chest and legs to feel more respectful and comfortable.

Sandals were fine as footwear and there’s no need to cover your head with anything.

In the coastal resorts of Zanzibar however, it’s a different story, with things a lot more relaxed.

Where I was in Paje , swimwear, shorts, singlets, sarongs were all completely acceptable on the beach and in my accommodation.

I just dressed more conservatively when I was visiting the town in Paje – to go to the shops or get a taxi for example.

What to Wear on a Flight to Tanzania?

Tanzania, Ngorongoro Crater, Zebra

It’s also worth taking some time to think about what to wear on a flight over to Tanzania.

Making sure these items tie in as much as possible with the checklist below will help you keep your packing light, as you won’t be doubling up or carrying any unnecessary pieces you won’t wear again until the flight home.

Quite simply, layers are key.

You never know how hot or cold a plane might be and if you want to get some sleep, comfy clothing is king.

This is especially true given flights to Tanzania from Europe, Australia, New Zealand or North America are usually long haul (around 7hours+), so I’d certainly advise wearing things you feel at ease in.

Ladies, I always wear leggings on long-haul flights and love these natural bamboo fibre ones from Boody , which I now never travel without!

I generally pair them with either a thin cotton top or dress (depending how much coverage you want), and then also take a sweater and a scarf on the plane for extra cosy layers.

The travel wraps from Sholdit , which have hidden security pockets, are perfect for travel adventures and I love mine!

A travel pillow will also help you here and I love this one , which I just bought and I’m already in love with thanks to its memory foam, high-sided design.

Alternatively, if leggings aren’t your thing, then loose-fitting jeans or comfy cargo pants might be a good option, with a t-shirt and thin sweater on top.

Just enter your details below and I'll email it you - simple!

Information will be sent to the email provided above

Complete Tanzania Packing List

And so finally here it is, my item by item checklist for exactly what to pack and wear in Tanzania…

Tanzania, Serengeti, Male Lion

1x Thin Waterproof / Windproof Jacket

Set in the tropics, Tanzania can be wet and humid (even when it’s warm), which means thin layers are crucial when it comes to staying dry without overheating.

Taking a thinner jacket that you can layer on or off when being active also makes a lot of sense.

I love the North Face Venture 2 .

1x Thick Hoodie / Sweater

Tanzania rarely gets cold, but after a rainstorm, if you’re up for a dawn hike or you’re post-diving, you might want to feel a bit snug.

As such, 1 thicker jumper is nice to take with you – I suggest wearing one on the plane anyway.

A good activewear one, like this Columbia fleece is well suited to the job as it is designed for outdoor travel and perfect for safari and camping adventures.

2x Thin Long-Sleeved Tops

Good for cooler days or when safari-ing at dawn, dusk, or night, thin long-sleeved tops are also good when you need to layer up, as they can be worn under thicker jumpers.

Choosing natural fibre options, like cotton, is a good choice for budget vs comfort.

It will also reduce the amount you sweat.

Thin tops also make for an excellent hiking base layer if you do want to scale any mountains!

7x Singlets / T-Shirts

Choose tops that match the trousers / leggings / shorts you pack and consider quick-dry options.

T-shirts are good for covering shoulders and offering sun protection in the tropical climate of Tanzania.

1x Pair Long Pants / Trousers

Great for going out in the evening or wandering around towns when it’s rainy, a pair of versatile trousers are a must when it comes to what to pack for East African countries like Tanzania.

I think 1 is enough, if you ensure it will cover a wide range of activities from strolling to going out in the evening to nature time.

Tanzania is quite conservative in certain areas and all locals tend to wear longer items of clothing that at least stretch to the knee, As such, you may feel more comfortable doing the same – especially in cities or spots with a strong Islamic culture, such as Stone Town .

Just make sure any trousers you bring are thin, as this country is rarely cold!

1-2x Pairs Leggings / Hiking Pants

One of my travel essentials, leggings are so helpful for putting under trousers if cold, for hiking or exercising, for being comfortable, for extra nightwear or for under a casual dress in the evening.

My advice is always to take at least 1 pair and make them bamboo fibre ones if poss, as these guys are soft, light, comfortable, breathable, quick-dry and hypoallergenic… what’s not to love?!

If you don’t like leggings, hiking trousers or loose-fitting pants will do fine instead, as they are also good for travel days and if you plan to undertake any volunteer work.

2x Pairs Shorts

You’re going to need something to wear during those hot beach days in Tanzania, especially if you’re in the country to dive or generally live it up by the ocean!

2x Light Dresses

Again a good item for beach days.

Or if you want to dress up a bit during the evening, you can pair this over a pair of leggings.

You see, so versatile!

8x Pairs Underwear

Small and compact, 8 pairs will save you a lot of handwashing!

2x Bras + 2x Sports Bra

Small to pack and great for those bumpy safari rides, I really love this black, supportive sports bra from Nike .

4x Pairs Socks

Make sure you take socks of various lengths / thickness, including ankle socks for city days and good, non-blister over the ankle socks for hiking and nature activities.

I always recommend a couple of sarongs whenever I travel because they are so versatile.

Great for hiking, lying on the beach, using as a thin sheet at night or trying to keep your neck protected from the sun, the list of uses for the humble sarong goes on and on!

Check out my article about all the ways you can use a sarong when you travel here .

1x Cap / Sun Hat

Having something to shield your face, neck and ears from the strong UV rays that are very prevalent in Tanzania is a must, especially when you might be exposed to them for long periods of time if you’re hitting some national parks / hiking / volunteering / on safari etc.

2x Bikinis / Swimwear

Well, you need something to enjoy those fabulous beaches with that’s for sure!

Hopefully they’ll get so much use, you’ll see packing 2 pairs as a worthy use of space!

1x Pair Sunglasses

Make sure your sunglasses are UV-protected and consider prescription ones if you wear glasses usually.

You can always double up on your daywear here to save room!

Otherwise, thin and light cotton shorts and a top will do the job.

Tanzania, Serengeti, Landscape 1

1x Pair Hiking Boots

Depending on your plans, either hiking boots, hiking shoes or trail runners will do when it comes to packing for Tanzania.

Check out this post I wrote to learn more about the best footwear depending on what type of safari activities you want to enjoy.

Personally, I’d opt for something lighter in Tanzania, as the tropical climate here definitely means you want something breathable.

That said, if you’re perhaps heading to Kenya on a walking safari , or Uganda to trek with the Gorillas as well as travel in Tanzania, then you’ll definitely want something more heavy-duty.

1x Pair Trainers / Runners

Good sturdy sneakers for exploring cities and towns on foot are crucial in Tanzania.

These New Balance black cross-trainers are great all-rounders and won’t show up a lot of dirt.

1x Pair Flip Flops / Sandals

Personally I’d never travel anywhere without my Arizona Birkenstocks and neither should you!

The support they provide is awesome and that’s definitely something you’ll need for the uneven terrain and streets in Tanzania!

Tanzania, Serengeti, Camel

Thin Toiletries Bag with Hook

A light, thin wash bag is essential for keeping the weight in your backpack down.

And one with a hook makes it easy to hang up in small bathrooms or when out in nature.

This one is a great, cheap option.

Shampoo & Conditioner Bars

I always go for shampoo and conditioner bars when I travel to save the plastic and keep the space down.

Although they are a bit pricey, they last for ages.

Say goodbye to mid-travel spillages and bulky bottles people, this is the eco-friendly future!

Anti-Bacterial Soap

Keep in ziplock bag to prevent from getting soap slime on everything you own!

I suggest an anti-bacterial bar as they are great for keeping you clean in tropical climates where you’re likely to be sweating a bit!

I always pack a natural crystal deodorant as they last forever (great if you’re travelling for a few months) and are free from many nasty chemicals.

They are also the only thing that stops me sweating in the tropical heat… lovely!

Face Cleanser, Serum, Toner & Moisturiser

Great for bringing your skin back to life after days in the strong sun.

Good Sunscreen

Choose a 30 SPF or higher for those super strong rays in Tanzania and go natural if you can to keep the chemicals out of your skin.

Insect Repellent

I recommend a strong product for Tanzania to keep yourself protected against malaria and dengue fever.

This doubles as a great moisturiser, soother and aftersun – much needed in East Africa.

Buy some organic Aloe Vera here .

SPF Lip Salve

Very important for those strong UV conditions and keeping your lips healthy and happy.

Tea-Tree Essential Oil

A powerful antiseptic, anti-mould and anti-fungal treatment, tea-tree essential oil is also great to throw with your clothes washing (just a few drops) and ideal for freshening up smelly bags / laundry etc.

Get an organic tea-tree oil if you can.

An ideal remedy for headaches, sore muscles and insect bites, tiger balm is super versatile and a must on any Tanzania packing list, especially if the mosquitoes love you as much as me!

Paracetamol, Anti-Septic Cream, Rehydration Salts, Imodium, Anti-Inflammatories, Anti-Histamines & Band-Aids

First-aid essentials!

Menstrual Cup

The best way to deal with your time of the month when travelling ladies.

Saves the planet from more waste too.

Check out the best prices for them here .

Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Floss

Razor & Spare Blades

Nail Scissors & Nail File

Tweezers & Safety Pins

Cotton Buds / Pads

Hair Bands & Hair Brush

Glasses / Contact Lenses if you wear them

Anti-Malarial Medication

Miscellaneous

Tanzania, Ngorongoro Crater, Hippos

Eye Mask & Earplugs

Key for sleeping in hostels and / or when camping.

This eye mask from Alaska Bear is super comfy… go on treat yourself!

Travel Towel

I recommend Latrek when it comes to the best travel towel, because they are cheap, compact, soft and don’t smell.

Love, love, love mine. Read my full review here .

Definitely needed for hiking, sightseeing and active safari days, this Kompressor from Marmot is perfect for the job as it’s super featherweight and packs down to nothing.

Literally an ideal item for your Tanzania packing list.

Combination Padlock

Very useful for locking up bags and valuables when staying in hostels or on bus rides, these don’t have to be expensive, just reliable!

Best to get a TSA-approved one in case of any hassle at the airport.

Filter Water Bottle

Try not to add to the world’s plastic problem and consider travelling with a filter water bottle like this one from LifeStraw .

Not only does this mean you can safely and easily drink the tap water in Tanzania, but it will also save you the money and hassle of having to continuously buy bottled water.

Much cheaper and more environmentally friendly, the LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottles have an amazing technology that filters out 99.9% of harmful bacteria and the filter lasts for 4000 litres, which means you’ll likely only have to replace it once a year!

Travel Handwash & Washing Line

Great for doing emergency washing, such as underwear in a sink, travel handwash is always a must when I backpack anywhere.

So useful in Tanzania if you’re diving or travelling during the rainy season!

These small and compact guys are great for keeping your electricals equipment safe and dry.

Check out this top-rated one for ideas.

Silk Sleeping Bag Liner

Personally, I wouldn’t bother with a full sleeping bag if you’re travelling in Tanzania, it’s just too hot to warrant it most of the year!

That said, a silk liner, which will keep you snug at night and actually stop you sweating is the perfect alternative, plus it’s lighter and less bulky to carry too.

Check out this one to learn more.

The caveat here is if you’re climbing Mount Kilimanjaro – see my disclaimer in the intro!

Lots of people say you don’t need this, but I find it very helpful.

Choose a light, inexpensive one and make sure it has a bottle opener, corkscrew and knife – like this .

When you’re out in nature in Tanzania, a multi-tool can come in very helpful.

Mosquito Net

Great to have for those times when the one provided is less than adequate, or when you want to sleep under the stars but still not get bitten!

A travel mosquito net is a must on your Tanzania packing list.

Toilet Paper

Take the cardboard centre and condense these bad boys!

Multiple packs of biodegradable ones… I’ve never used so many in my life!

Electricals

Tanzania, Giraffe, Serengeti

Smartphone & Headphones

Taking your smartphone to stay in touch with those at home, check maps, book accommodation and upload some pics while you’re in Tanzania is a great idea.

You can easily buy a cheap SIM when you get to the country and it’s good to know that data packages and network coverage here are generally excellent and very affordable too.

I’d also download some audiobooks and music onto your phone before you leave home – a great idea for journey days.

I recommend Amazon Audible and Spotify Premium for these purposes and wouldn’t travel without either these days.

Portable Charger

Portable chargers are great when travelling, especially if you’re out sightseeing and snapping all day and worried about your phone or camera battery lasting.

I recommend the Anker Powercore – it’s light, compact and charges devices super quickly.

I love my Sony A600 mirrorless camera , which I used throughout my travels in East Africa and beyond.

Compact and sturdy, it’s perfect for travelling.

A GoPro is also a great idea to help capture the more active adventures you might have in this country such as hiking, safari-ing or diving.

It’s also great for video!

Lens, Spare Battery, Memory Cards, Chargers & Cables

All essentials for the camera and / or the GoPro.

Tanzania uses European style outlets, so get a Skross World Adapter that won’t fail you.

Headlamp & Spare Batteries

I never travel anywhere without a headlamp and recommend you choose a product that uses commonly found batteries and has a red night light function to avoid the bugs.

I love my Black Diamond number , which has served me very well across East Africa, especially during those occasional power cuts!

You can easily get an affordable pair like these Binoteck ones, which are ideal for safari.

Documents & Paperwork

Tanzania. Dar Es Salaam, Beach

Passport & Photocopies

Definitely take a colour copy of your passport and keep it on your person at all times.

Taking a photo of your passport and storing it safely on your smartphone / cloud storage is also a good idea.

Visa Documentation

Depending where you’re from of course, you may or may not need this for Tanzania.

Most European, Aussie, Kiwi and North American passport holders get a visa on entry via a stamp obtained at both land and air border points.

Immunisation Documentation

Always good to have with you wherever you travel, it’s a smart idea to check whether you need your Yellow Fever jab for Tanzania.

Travel Insurance Policy

tanzania safari outfits

Alternatively, if you’re a long-term traveller, digital nomad or frequent remote worker seeking travel health cover, check out Safetywing’s Nomad Insurance policies.

Credit Cards and Debit Cards

When travelling Taznaia it’s important to haveh a current account and debit card that don’t charge you for transactions or ATM withdrawals.

If you’re there for a while, this will save you a lot of money.

The easy way to spend abroad with real exchange rates, no markups and no sneaky transaction fees, I never travel without my Wise card.

It works just like a debit card in Tanzania… and it links easily with Google and Apple pay. Grab yours here .

Hidden Cash in Small Thin Purse

Take some USD cash with you that can be exchanged into Tanzania Shillings in case of an emergency.

Flight Information

Sadly, at some point, it’s going to be time to go home *sob sob *

What to Wear on Safari • Ultimate Safari Outfit Packing List

Woman smiling and walking toward the camera while walking through the Serengeti on safari

You’ve booked your dream trip; an African safari. And now, the slight panic sets in because… what do you wear on safari? You’ve seen in documentaries people in head to toe tan, with dirt-covered boots and mosquito nets, but is actually what the ideal safari outfit looks like? I’m going to help you put together multiple safari outfit ideas so that you are dressed in a safe, functional, and maybe even cute way for this safari trip! So settle in and let’s look at some Africa safari outfits.

I specifically went to Tanzania for my 7-day safari, but these rules for a recommended safari outfit are pretty applicable to almost any safari in Africa (aside from gorilla trekking).

Use my affiliate code AMANDAWANDERS to save $100 on any safari with Shiri Adventures

Rules for what to wear on safari.

And before we get started,  I may receive commission  if you make a purchase from some of the links in this list. However I promise I would never recommend something to you that I didn’t personally love. So these items are all vetted through yours truly and are 100% perfect for a safari outfit.

Colors Matter in Safari Outfits

The first time I typed “what to wear on Safari” in Google was because I wanted to know what colors and patterns I could get away with on my first safari. Turns out, not many! You see mostly earth tones from guides and naturalists because that’s what you need to wear to not stick out to the wildlife.

Here are some no go safari outfit colors:

  • Don’t wear black or dark blue because these colors attract tsetse flies
  • Don’t wear white, it doesn’t blend with any terrain
  • Avoid loud colors and patterns for the same reason as white
  • Avoid camouflage, this is reserved for military only

What colors are good to wear on safari?

  • Light earth tones; tans, browns, forest greens, and colors in that same vein
  • Either solid print or very minimal patterns aregoing to be ideal for your safari outfit

Dress in Light Fabrics and Layers

The mornings and evenings can be cool with warmer to hot afternoons, so you’ll definitely want to pack safari outfits that can be layered. It’s easiest to layer light fabrics, and you’ll definitely want things that are breathable so you don’t overheat. A safari outfit made of sweat-tastic fabrics is no good!

What fabrics to wear on safari?

  • Anything lightweight and breathable

You’re going to be traveling between lodges or camps almost every day on your African safari, and you’re not going to want to be packing up a ton of clothes every time. So, I HIGHLY recommend you pack 2 or 3 outfits that you can mix and match items between.

I also packed using my Peak Design backpack and the Away Bigger Carry-On luggage, and these were easy to move with every day.

Keep Your Safari Outfits Simple

I know we’re all sort of convinced from movies we need these extravagant safari outfits, but I promise simple is better here. Form and function over fashion for sure; you’re going to be getting in and out of vehicles, standing up and down all day every day for however many days you’re on safari. But the best thing about some of my outfit recommendations below is that they’re still cute!

Wear Long Sleeves and Pants

You’re going to want to protect yourself from the sun, the dirt/dust, and the elements, so I highly recommend wearing pants and for one of the layers of your safari outfit to be a long sleeve shirt of some sort. Not every layer needs to be long sleeves, but at least one.

Comfortable Shoes

If you’re not doing any sort of hiking or trekking on safari, your shoes won’t really matter as much. Our safari consisted of game drives for the most part, so I really just recommend something comfortable and neutral in color. This can be hiking boots or a sneaker; whichever would work.

But you will want something that isn’t going to get ruined by a little mud. Depending on what time of year you go on safari you may be walking in a little bit of mud at your hotel/camp site, lunch spot, or any other stops you make along the way.

Bring a Raincoat

Again, because of the weather I highly recommend a raincoat for your safari outfit. Because not only is it a light jacket that acts as a great outer layer should you need it, it’s also great in case you’re going on safari during the shoulder or rainier seasons.

Safari Outfit Ideas

Looking for outfit ideas and inspiration for what to wear on safari? I’ve got you. Here are the outfits I wore during my safari:

Safari Outfit Idea 1 • Wayre

Woman on safari looking out to zebras walking in the distance

Wayre is a brand that sells sustainable and ethically-made travel clothing, and I found these outfits to be perfect for safari. They’re lightweight, they had great neutral colors, and they’re stink-proof!

Recommended products:

  • Wayre Cruiser Pant
  • Wayre Button Up Crop
  • Use my code AMANDAWANDERS20 for an additional 20% off at Wayre

What to Wear On Safari Inspo 2 • Wayre

Woman and man standing in front of a large tree on safarh

Another outfit from Wayre ; this brand is a perfect solution for what to wear on safari.

African Safari Outfit Idea 3 • Patagonia

Woman walking in Serengeti National Park on safari

This romper/jumpsuit was amazing. It was SUPER lightweight and very cute. I loved it as a cuter safari outfit, but as always remember that when wearing a jumpsuit you basically have to completely disrobe to use the restroom. I didn’t find it much trouble, but important to keep in mind!

  • Patagonia button up shirt
  • Patagonia jumpsuit/romper

Safari Outfit Inspiration 4 • Patagonia + Amazon

Woman standing on a rock looking out to the Serengeti

This button up shirt was an absolute must and I wore it multiple times in multiple ways. I loved it. And I also paired it with these Amazon pants in addition to the previously mentioned jumpsuit.

  • Patagonia shirt
  • Amazon crop
  • Amazon pants

What to Wear On Safari • Shoe Ideas

Like I mentioned before, I would just go with comfort and color preference here. Find something earth toned that’s comfortable to wear. If you’re in the jeep all day for your safari, this won’t matter as much, but I would definitely steer clear of black and dark blue for the tsetse flies I mentioned before. And if you go with white, pick a shoe that is easy to clean mud and dirt off of.

  • Baabuk Sky Wooler in Oatmeal – these are the sneakers I wore
  • My all-time favorite hiking boots – Timberland Chocorua Trail Boot
  • My all-time favorite white sneaker (and they’re leather so you can clean them) – Adidas Stan Smiths

So there you go, all the rules I learned around what to wear on safari. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out . To learn more about my safari, definitely follow me on socials, because I’ve got TikTok playlists and Instagram highlights saved! I hope you have the absolute time of your life on safari, I know I did!

Your tip concerning the colors just saved me! My entire wardrobe is mostly black clothes so I’d be hanging with tsetse flies all day. Saved to check back for when I pack for our upcoming safari 🙂

So many great tips you would not otherwise know if you hadn’t already been on safari.

Love these tips! I would never have thought about black or blue attracting the flies. I’m already a ‘bug magnet’ so I’ll take all the help I can get!

Okay, you make dressing for a safari look so stylish! I love your outfits 🙂 This is seriously so helpful though, I would have had no clue what to wear on a safari. Thanks for sharing these tips!

This is such a helpful post! My favorite color is black so I would definitely need to invest in some new pieces before a safari (which is on the bucket list!). Great advice. Loved the recommendations for stylish yet functional pieces. Definitely saving for later!

Essential Clothing for a Safari

Long-Sleeved Shirts for Safari

When it comes to what to pack for a safari in Tanzania , comfort and functionality should be your top priorities. The key is to dress in layers to adapt to changing weather conditions and be prepared for both hot days and chilly nights. Here are some essential clothing items to consider:

  • Lightweight, breathable shirts : Opt for loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts made of lightweight and breathable fabric to protect yourself from the sun and pesky insect bites. Neutral colors like khaki, beige, or olive green are ideal for blending in with the natural surroundings.
  • Long pants and shorts : Pack a mix of long, lightweight pants and shorts for maximum versatility. Long pants will protect your legs from the sun, while shorts are perfect for hot afternoons. Consider convertible pants that can be zipped off to convert into shorts for added convenience.
  • Sweater or light jacket : Evenings and early mornings on safari can get chilly, so it’s essential to pack a lightweight sweater or jacket. Opt for something that can be easily layered over your shirts or worn alone when the temperature drops.
  • Sun hat and sunglasses : Protecting yourself from the strong African sun is crucial. Pack a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face and neck, and don’t forget a good pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.
  • Swimwear : If your safari includes a visit to Zanzibar or any other coastal areas, packing swimwear is a must. Tanzania boasts beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters, so taking a dip in the ocean is a fantastic way to cool off after a day of wildlife spotting.
  • Undergarments and socks : Ensure you have enough underwear and socks for the duration of your safari. Opt for moisture-wicking fabrics to keep you comfortable and minimize odor.

Remember, when packing for Tanzania safari , pack light and prioritize functionality over fashion. Stick to neutral colors that won’t attract unwanted attention from wildlife and avoid bright colors that may disturb the animals. Layering is key to adapt to changing temperatures throughout the day.

Footwear for a Safari

Choosing the right footwear for your safari adventure is crucial as you’ll be spending plenty of time on your feet, exploring the African wilderness. Here are some footwear options to consider:

  • Comfortable walking shoes : Invest in a sturdy pair of comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots. Look for shoes with good ankle support, grip, and cushioning to ensure your feet stay comfortable during long walks and game drives.
  • Sandals or flip-flops : In addition to your walking shoes, pack a pair of sandals or flip-flops for relaxing at your accommodation or for use at the beach. They’re also handy for quick trips to the restroom during game drives.
  • Sock liners and hiking socks : To prevent blisters and keep your feet dry, pack a few pairs of sock liners to wear under your hiking socks. Opt for moisture-wicking, breathable socks that provide cushioning and support.
  • Gaiters : If you’re planning to venture off the beaten path or explore areas with dense vegetation , consider packing gaiters. Gaiters will protect your legs from thorns, insects, and other potential hazards.
  • Waterproof shoes : Depending on the season and the specific safari activities you have planned, it may be worth investing in a pair of waterproof shoes. This will ensure your feet stay dry during rainy days or when crossing water bodies .

Remember to break in your new shoes before your safari to avoid discomfort or blisters. It’s also a good idea to add moleskin or blister plasters to your Tanzania safari packing list in case of any foot issues during your trip.

Protective Gear and Accessories

When it comes to protective gear and accessories, there are a few essential items that will enhance your safari experience and keep you safe. Here’s what you should consider packing:

  • Binoculars : Spotting wildlife from a distance is a thrilling part of any safari. Packing a good pair of binoculars will allow you to observe animals in their natural habitat without disturbing them.
  • Camera and lenses : Documenting your safari adventure through photography is a must. Invest in a good DSLR or mirrorless camera with a versatile zoom lens to capture stunning wildlife moments up close.
  • Lens cleaning kit : Safaris can be dusty, and your camera lens may require frequent cleaning. Pack a lens cleaning kit to ensure your photographs remain clear and free from smudges.
  • Portable charger and extra batteries : Keeping your electronics charged while on safari can be a challenge. Pack a portable charger to ensure your camera, phone, and other devices stay powered throughout the trip. Additionally, bring extra batteries for your camera to capture those once-in-a-lifetime moments.
  • Headlamp or flashlight : A headlamp or flashlight is essential for navigating your way around your accommodation at night or during early morning game drives. It’s also handy for reading maps or books in low-light conditions.
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent: Protecting your skin from the harsh African sun and pesky insect bites is vital. Pack a high SPF sunscreen and a reliable insect repellent to ward off mosquitoes and other bugs.
  • travel adapter : Tanzania uses Type D and Type G power outlets, so make sure to pack a travel adapter to charge your devices. It’s also advisable to pack a surge protector to safeguard your electronics from power surges.

Remember to pack these items in a sturdy and waterproof bag to protect them from dust, moisture, and potential damage during your safari.

Packing for Different Weather Conditions

Tanzania’s weather can vary depending on the region and the time of year you visit. It’s important when selecting what to pack for african safari Tanzania to pack accordingly in order to ensure you’re prepared for different weather conditions. Here’s what you should consider:

  • Rain jacket or poncho : If you’re visiting during the rainy season (March to May and November to December), packing a lightweight rain jacket or poncho is essential. This will keep you dry during sudden downpours and allow you to continue your safari activities without interruption.
  • Lightweight sweater or fleece : Evenings and early mornings can get chilly, especially during the dry season (June to October). Packing a lightweight sweater or fleece will provide an extra layer of warmth when needed.
  • Hat and scarf : Besides protecting yourself from the sun, a wide-brimmed hat and a lightweight scarf can provide some relief from the dust during game drives.
  • Sweat-wicking clothing : If you’re visiting during the hot and dry season, sweat-wicking clothing made of breathable fabrics like nylon or polyester will help keep you cool and comfortable.
  • Packable rain cover for your bag : To protect your belongings from rain or dust, consider investing in a packable rain cover for your backpack or duffel bag.
  • Waterproof dry bag : If you plan on participating in water-based activities or visiting coastal areas, a waterproof dry bag will keep your valuables and electronics safe and dry.

Research the weather patterns of the specific regions you’re planning to visit in Tanzania and use this in curating what you intend on packing for safari in Tanzania . Layering is once again crucial to adapt to changing temperatures throughout the day.

Important Documents and Paperwork

Before embarking on your Tanzanian safari , make sure to gather and organize all the necessary documents and paperwork. Here’s a checklist of what to pack for Tanzania safari particularly regarding paperwork and important documents:

  • Visa : Depending on your nationality, you may need a visa to enter Tanzania. Check the visa requirements well in advance and apply for your visa if necessary.
  • Yellow fever certificate : Tanzania requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate for travelers arriving from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission. Make sure to carry your certificate with you.
  • Travel insurance : It’s highly recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses, trip cancellation or interruption, and lost or stolen belongings. Keep a copy of your insurance policy and emergency contact numbers with you.
  • Flight tickets and itinerary : Print out your flight tickets and have a copy of your complete itinerary, including accommodation details and contact information.
  • Driver’s license and international driving permit : If you plan on driving in Tanzania, make sure to have a valid driver’s license from your home country and an international driving permit.
  • Emergency contact numbers : Keep a list of emergency contact numbers, including your country’s embassy or consulate in Tanzania, your tour operator, and your accommodation.

Store all these documents and paperwork in a secure folder or wallet and keep them with you at all times. It’s also a good idea to have digital copies stored on your phone or in cloud storage as a backup.

Medications and First Aid Kit

Bushman Insect Repellent for Safari

Having a well-equipped first aid kit and essential medications is crucial for any travel adventure, including safaris. Here’s a list of items to include in your safari first aid kit:

  • Prescription medications : If you take any prescription medications, ensure you have an ample supply to last throughout your trip. It’s essential to carry them in their original packaging, along with a copy of the prescription.
  • Over-the-counter medications : Pack a variety of over-the-counter medications to address common travel ailments such as headaches, upset stomachs, allergies, and motion sickness. Include pain relievers, antidiarrheal medication, antihistamines, and any other medications you may typically use.
  • Insect repellent and after-bite cream : Mosquitoes and other bugs can be prevalent in safari areas. Pack insect repellent containing DEET or another effective ingredient, as well as after-bite cream or soothing lotion to relieve itching and irritation.
  • Bandages and wound dressings : Include a variety of bandages, adhesive tape, and sterile wound dressings to treat any minor cuts, scrapes, or blisters that may occur during your safari.
  • Antiseptic wipes and hand sanitizer : To maintain good hygiene while on safari, pack antiseptic wipes and hand sanitizer to clean your hands and surfaces when soap and water are not readily available.
  • Tweezers and small scissors : These tools are handy for removing splinters, thorns, or ticks and for cutting bandages or clothing if needed.
  • Sunburn relief and lip balm : If you spend a lot of time outdoors, sunburns can happen. Pack aloe vera gel or another sunburn relief product to soothe any sunburns, as well as lip balm with SPF to protect your lips from the sun.

Remember to consult with your healthcare provider or a travel clinic before your trip to discuss any specific health concerns or necessary vaccinations for travel to Tanzania.

  • Camera cleaning kit : Dust and dirt can easily accumulate on your camera gear during a safari. Pack a camera cleaning kit containing a blower brush, microfiber cloth, and lens cleaning solution to keep your equipment in top condition.
  • Tripod or monopod : For steady shots and long-exposure photography, pack a lightweight tripod or monopod. This will help you stabilize your camera and prevent blurry images.
  • GoPro or action camera : If you want to capture unique perspectives or record your safari adventures, consider packing a GoPro or action camera. These compact devices are perfect for mounting on a vehicle or wearing on your body.
  • Portable hard drive or laptop : With the high-resolution images and videos you’ll be capturing, it’s essential to have a reliable backup solution therefore, your list of what to pack on safari Tanzania should include a portable hard drive or laptop to transfer and store your files safely.
  • Smartphone and binocular adapter : If you don’t have a dedicated camera, a smartphone with a high-quality camera can still capture impressive shots. Consider purchasing a binocular adapter to attach your smartphone to your binoculars for long-distance photography.

Remember to pack these electronics and photography equipment in protective cases or bags to keep them safe from dust, moisture, and potential damage during your safari.

Tips for Packing Efficiently for a Safari in Tanzania

Packing efficiently for a safari can make a significant difference in your overall experience. Here are some tips to help you maximize your space and make the most of your packing.

1. Check luggage restrictions

Different airlines and safari operators may have specific luggage restrictions, particularly for small aircraft transfers to remote safari destinations. Make sure to check the weight and size limitations for both checked and carry-on luggage to avoid any last-minute surprises or extra fees.

2. Pack lightweight and multipurpose items

Opt for lightweight, multipurpose items that can serve multiple functions. For example, a sarong can be used as a towel, a scarf, or even a makeshift picnic blanket. Choose clothing items that can be easily mixed and matched to create different outfits without taking up too much space in your luggage.

3. Roll your clothes

Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can save a significant amount of space in your suitcase or backpack. It also helps prevent wrinkles and makes it easier to find specific items without unpacking your entire bag.

4. Use packing cubes or compression bags

Invest in packing cubes or compression bags to further maximize your packing space. These handy organizers allow you to separate different types of clothing and compress them to create more room in your luggage. They also help keep your belongings organized throughout the trip.

5. Don’t overpack

Remember, you don’t need to bring your entire wardrobe on a safari. Stick to the essentials and pack only what you know you’ll wear. Most lodges and camps offer laundry services, so you can easily refresh your clothing during your stay. Focus on comfort, practicality, and versatility when selecting your outfits.

Conclusion: Enjoy Your Unforgettable Safari Experience in Tanzania

Embarking on a safari adventure in Tanzania is like stepping into a world untouched by time. The vast plains, magnificent wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes make it a dream destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Our comprehensive tips and tricks will not only ensure that you are comfortable and protected during your safari but also make you look effortlessly stylish as you capture those unforgettable moments on camera. From lightweight and breathable clothing to sturdy footwear and essential accessories, we leave no stone unturned in providing you with the essential safari wardrobe that blends functionality with fashion. So, get ready to dress the part and embark on an adventure of a lifetime as we unveil the secrets to dressing for a safari in Tanzania.

Understanding the Climate and Weather in Tanzania

When planning your safari wardrobe, it’s crucial to understand the climate and weather conditions in Tanzania. The country experiences two distinct seasons – the dry season and the wet season. The dry season, which runs from June to October, is characterized by warm days and cool nights, with minimal rainfall. On the other hand, the wet season, from November to May, sees more frequent rain showers and higher humidity levels.

During the dry season, it’s advisable to pack lightweight and breathable clothing that will keep you cool during the day and provide a layer of warmth in the evenings. Opt for natural fabrics such as cotton and linen, as they allow for better airflow and moisture-wicking properties. T-shirts, shorts, lightweight pants, and long-sleeved shirts are all essential items to include in your safari wardrobe. Additionally, pack a light jacket or sweater for the cooler evenings.

During the wet season, it’s important to be prepared for sudden downpours and increased humidity. Pack lightweight and quick-drying clothing that will keep you comfortable even when wet. Consider investing in a good quality rain jacket or poncho to keep you dry during the showers. It’s also advisable to pack a few pairs of long pants and long-sleeved shirts to protect yourself from mosquitoes and other insects that thrive in the wet weather.

Choosing the Right Clothing for a Safari

When it comes to choosing the right clothing for a safari, comfort and functionality should be your top priorities. Opt for loose-fitting and breathable clothing that allows for easy movement and ventilation. Avoid bright colors and opt for neutral tones such as khaki, beige, and olive green, as they blend well with the natural environment and help you camouflage with the surroundings.

For bottoms, lightweight and quick-drying pants or convertible pants that can be zipped off into shorts are a great choice. They offer versatility and allow you to adapt to the changing weather conditions throughout the day. Pair them with comfortable and breathable long-sleeved shirts or T-shirts made from moisture-wicking fabrics.

Layering is key when it comes to dressing for a safari. The temperature can vary significantly between day and night, so it’s important to be able to add or remove layers as needed. Pack a lightweight jacket or sweater that can easily be tied around your waist or stuffed into your daypack when not in use.

Essential Items to Pack for a Safari

Packing the right essentials for your safari adventure is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Apart from clothing, there are a few key items that should be on every safari-goer’s packing list.

First and foremost, invest in a good quality sun hat that provides shade and protection from the scorching African sun. Look for a wide-brimmed hat that covers your face, neck, and ears, and opt for a hat with a chin strap to keep it secure during game drives or walking safaris.

Next, don’t forget to pack a high-quality pair of sunglasses with UV protection. The sun can be intense, and protecting your eyes is essential. Look for sunglasses that are polarized to reduce glare and improve visibility.

A good quality sunscreen with a high SPF is another essential item to include in your safari packing list. Apply sunscreen generously and regularly to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. Choose a sunscreen that is water-resistant and suitable for outdoor activities.

Additionally, pack a lightweight and compact daypack to carry your essentials during game drives or walking safaris. Look for a backpack with multiple compartments and a padded shoulder strap for maximum comfort.

Dressing for Comfort and Functionality

Comfort and functionality should be your guiding principles when it comes to dressing for a safari. Opt for loose-fitting and breathable clothing that allows for easy movement and ventilation. Avoid tight or restrictive clothing that may hinder your ability to enjoy the safari experience fully.

Choose clothing with multiple pockets to store essentials such as your camera, sunscreen, insect repellent, and binoculars. Cargo pants or shorts are a great option as they offer plenty of storage space without compromising on comfort.

Opt for clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton and linen, as they are lightweight, breathable, and allow for better airflow. Avoid synthetic materials, as they tend to trap heat and moisture, leading to discomfort.

Dressing for Protection from Insects and Wildlife

When venturing into the wilderness of Tanzania, it’s important to dress in a way that protects you from insects and wildlife. Mosquitoes and other biting insects are prevalent in certain areas, and protection is crucial to avoid discomfort and potential diseases such as malaria.

Opt for long-sleeved shirts and long pants made from lightweight and breathable fabrics. Tuck your pants into your socks or boots to prevent insects from crawling up your legs. Consider treating your clothing with insect repellent or wearing clothing that has been pre-treated with insect-repellent properties.

Avoid wearing bright colors or floral prints, as they may attract insects. Stick to neutral tones that blend well with the natural environment.

When it comes to wildlife protection, it’s important to dress in a way that minimizes the risk of any unwanted encounters. Avoid wearing bright colors or patterns that may attract animals’ attention. Stick to neutral tones that help you blend in with the surroundings.

Choosing the Right Footwear for a Safari

Choosing the right footwear for a safari is essential for comfort and safety. Opt for sturdy and closed-toe shoes or boots that provide good ankle support. This will protect your feet from injuries, especially when walking on uneven terrain or during bushwalks.

Look for footwear that is lightweight, breathable, and waterproof. It’s important to choose shoes that are comfortable for long walks and can handle various types of terrain. Avoid open-toed shoes or sandals, as they offer minimal protection and may increase the risk of injury.

Break in your shoes before your safari to ensure they are comfortable and won’t cause blisters or discomfort during your adventure. Pack a few pairs of moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet dry and prevent blisters.

Packing Accessories for a Safari

In addition to clothing and footwear, there are a few essential accessories that should be on your safari packing list. These accessories will not only enhance your safari experience but also provide functionality and convenience.

A good quality pair of binoculars is a must-have accessory for any safari-goer. It allows you to observe wildlife from a distance without disturbing their natural behavior. Look for binoculars with a magnification of at least 8x and a wide field of view for optimal viewing.

A reliable and durable camera is another essential accessory for capturing those unforgettable safari moments. Whether you prefer a DSLR or a compact camera, make sure it has a good zoom lens to capture wildlife from a distance. Pack extra memory cards and batteries to avoid running out of storage or power.

A headlamp or flashlight is essential for navigating your campsite or walking around at night. Choose a lightweight and compact option with adjustable brightness settings. Don’t forget to pack extra batteries or a portable charger.

Lastly, a reusable water bottle and a water purification system are essential for staying hydrated during your safari. Opt for a durable and leak-proof water bottle that can be easily refilled. A water purification system such as water purification tablets or a portable water filter will ensure that you have access to clean and safe drinking water throughout your adventure.

Tips for Staying Stylish on a Safari

While functionality and comfort are key when it comes to safari attire, it’s still possible to stay stylish and put together. Here are a few tips to help you look effortlessly chic on your safari in Tanzania:

1. Opt for neutral tones such as khaki, beige, and olive green, as they blend well with the natural surroundings and create a classic safari look.

2. Mix and match your clothing to create different outfits. A pair of versatile pants or shorts can be paired with multiple tops to create different looks.

3. Accessorize with a statement belt, a chunky bracelet, or a stylish scarf to add a touch of personality to your safari outfit.

4. Choose clothing with interesting details such as embroidery or unique prints to add visual interest to your look.

5. Don’t forget to pack a stylish sun hat and a pair of sunglasses to complete your safari ensemble.

Remember, the key to staying stylish on a safari is to focus on comfortable and functional clothing that allows you to fully enjoy the experience while still looking put together.

Conclusion: Enjoying Your Safari Experience in Tanzania

Dressing appropriately for a safari in Tanzania is not only about looking stylish but also about ensuring your comfort, safety, and enjoyment. By understanding the climate and weather conditions, choosing the right clothing and footwear, and packing essential accessories, you can embark on your safari adventure with confidence. Remember to prioritize comfort, functionality, and protection from insects and wildlife when selecting your safari wardrobe. And don’t forget to add your personal touch to your outfits to stay stylish while capturing those unforgettable moments in the Tanzanian wilderness. Embrace the spirit of adventure, immerse yourself in the beauty of nature, and create memories that will last a lifetime as you explore the wonders of Tanzania on your safari.

Clothes for Safari in Tanzania

Clothes to wear on Safari in Tanzania

Going on an African safari conjures up amazing images of adventure, glamour and excitement. However, some of the practicalities like what to bring and wear on a safari can be less interesting – but very important!

Nobody wants to be distracted from the incredible site of the African animals by uncomfortable shoes or the dreaded tse tse flies.

What to bring on safari in Tanzania?

Comfortable, loose clothing with a good pair of shoes.

If you’re heading to the main spots such as the Serengeti or the Ngorongoro Crater, you will likely spend most of your time inside a jeep, but prepare for the unexpected!

Our trip in the Serengeti was momentarily stopped by a mechanical meltdown, which resulted in us all jumping out and helping push the car out of a muddy spot. So, it is best to wear comfortable, loose clothing with a good pair of shoes.

Warm clothes

For many people, a multi day safari involves a night or two camping. Therefore, it is important to bring warm clothes as it can get very cold overnight.

Avoid leather clothing

Also beware of leather clothing – the scent can attract animals (honestly – we had a tour mate lose a nice pair of leather sandals to a hyena!)

What colors to wear on safari in Tanzania?

One things to be aware of when you are on safari in Tanzania is tse tse flies. Unfortunately they can fly in swarms and make your trip really uncomfortable! Although most good drivers will know how to avoid the areas where they are common, they tend to be attracted to darker colours.

Therefore, it is recommended that your clothing is light in colour. Also, long garments (like a safari skirt!) are perfect as they protect your skin from the little pests!

For women on safari, a long safari skirt is a great way to go. Not only are they glamorous, but they are great for the warm weather. Most places in Tanzania are pretty conservative, so it is also an appropriate way to go.

Hat and Sunglasses

Columbia bora booney hat

The sun can also be quite severe, so it is a good idea to bring a hat and sunglasses as well.

Towel and Soap

The best tip for packing efficiently for a Tanzania safari is to only bring the essentials. One thing you should definitely bring is a towel for the shower!

Unless you’re specifically told, most campsites do not have towels and it’s not much fun to be caught out without one!

I would also recommend bringing your own soap. Shampoo and conditioner are probably not necessary for any short trip – if you’re vain, bring a hat or headscarf!

Probably the most important thing to bring on either a one day or multi day safari is a camera for capturing the amazing moments. Any camera is fine but for the enthusiast, a good, fast lens is best for snapping the lightning-quick moments. You can also bring a binocular.

Insect repellent and sunscreen

Eculyptus natural insect repellent

Another must is some insect repellent.I recommend this natural insect repellent DEET-Free.Sunscreen is also important – even through the windows of the safari car, you can still get badly burnt.

Drinking water

Finally, it is absolutely necessary to bring your own water. Nothing will ruin your dream safari faster than if you suffer from dehydration, which does happen. So ensure that you bring at least 2 litres of water.

What to wear on Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a beautiful place, whether it be for relaxing on a beach or going on safari. Although it is popular with tourists and many resorts have their own private part of the beach so you can be a little more care free, in the cities (and especially Stone Town), the culture is very conservative.

Out of respect and in order to avoid any uncomfortable situations, it is best to cover yourself – at least your shoulders and knees. One priceless item for these situations is a sarong – perfect for wrapping around your shoulders or bathing suit.

If you are heading off on a safari from another location that you’ll be returning to (like a hotel), ask if you can leave your bag there and just take a small backpack.

In order to make it easy to access what you have packed, I recommend organising your backpack efficiently using other smaller bags; one for your wet and dirty clothes, and one for your underwear and other things you want to be able to grab easily.

What to wear on your Tanzania Safari

What to wear on your tanzania safari.

Embarking on a Memorable Tanzania Safari imagine being surrounded by the stunning landscapes of Tanzania, the majestic wildlife , and the thrill of exploring the vast savannahs. A Tanzania safari promises a once-in-a-lifetime experience filled with adventure and natural beauty.

As you prepare for this remarkable journey , one crucial aspect to consider is your attire. The right clothing can make a significant difference in ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable safari experience. In this guide, we’ll explore everything you need to know about what to wear on your Tanzania safari. From practical clothing choices to style tips, we’ve got you covered.

Dressing for Comfort and Functionality

When it comes to safari clothing, comfort and functionality are key. The Tanzanian climate can vary, so it’s essential to be prepared for different weather conditions. Opt for breathable fabrics that allow for easy movement and help regulate your body temperature.

1. Lightweight and Neutral-Colored Clothing

Pack lightweight, neutral-colored clothing to blend in with the natural surroundings and avoid disturbing the wildlife. Neutral colors like khaki, beige, and olive are ideal choices as they also conceal dust and dirt.

2. Long-Sleeved Shirts and Trousers

Long-sleeved shirts and trousers provide protection from the sun, insects, and vegetation. Choose lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics that keep you cool during warm days and provide an extra layer of warmth in the evenings.

3. Safari Hat with a Wide Brim

A safari hat with a wide brim offers excellent sun protection for your face, neck, and ears. Look for a hat that is breathable and has a chin strap to keep it secure during game drives.

4. Sturdy and Comfortable Footwear

Invest in comfortable, closed-toe shoes with good traction for walking safaris and exploring rough terrains. Closed shoes also protect your feet from dust and insects.

5. Layering for Temperature Changes

Tanzania’s temperatures can fluctuate, especially during early morning and late evening game drives. Layering your clothing allows you to adjust to changing weather conditions easily.

6. Rain Gear

Pack a lightweight, waterproof jacket or poncho to stay dry during unexpected rain showers. Remember to choose quick-drying materials.

7. Swimsuit and Sandals

If your safari lodge has a pool or offers other water-based activities, a swimsuit and comfortable sandals are a must-have.

8. Respectful Attire for Cultural Visits

When visiting local villages or communities, opt for modest and respectful attire, such as long skirts or pants and shirts that cover your shoulders.

9. Safari-Chic Accessories

Add a touch of safari-chic to your outfit with stylish accessories like a patterned scarf or a leather belt. However, keep the jewelry minimal to avoid any inconveniences during the safari.

10. Camera Gear and Protection

For photography enthusiasts, consider protective gear like a dustproof camera bag to safeguard your equipment during the safari.

Staying Safe and Responsible

Your safety and the well-being of the wildlife and ecosystem are of utmost importance during your Tanzania safari. Familiarize yourself with responsible safari practices and wildlife guidelines.

11. Sunscreen and Insect Repellent

Protect your skin from the harsh African sun by applying a high SPF sunscreen. Additionally, carry insect repellent to prevent bug bites.

12. Hydration Essentials

Stay hydrated throughout your safari by carrying a refillable water bottle. Some lodges provide safe drinking water refill stations to reduce plastic waste.

13. Respect Wildlife Boundaries

Observe wildlife from a safe distance and never attempt to feed or touch them. Respect their natural habitat and behaviors.

14. Stay with Your Safari Group

During game drives or walking safaris, always stick with your safari group and follow your guide’s instructions.

15. Understanding Local Customs

Educate yourself about the local customs and traditions of the Tanzanian people to show respect and avoid unintentional cultural misunderstandings.

16. Safe Food and Water Practices

Only consume food and water from trusted sources to avoid any health issues during your safari.

Expert Tips for an Unforgettable Tanzania Safari Make the most of your Tanzania safari with these expert tips that add to the excitement and magic of your adventure.

17. Binoculars and Field Guides

Carry binoculars to spot distant wildlife and a field guide to identify different species and understand their behavior.

18. Early Morning and Late Afternoon Game Drives

The best time to witness active wildlife is during early morning and late afternoon game drives. Be prepared for chilly temperatures during these times.

19. Capture the Sunrise and Sunset

Tanzania’s landscapes offer breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. Have your camera ready to capture these magical moments.

20. Keep Quiet and Listen Patience is key during a safari. Stay quiet, listen to the sounds of the wilderness, and you’ll be rewarded with incredible wildlife encounters.

21. Connect with Local Guides

Engage with your safari guides to learn about the flora, fauna, and cultural heritage of the region. Their knowledge enriches your safari experience.

22. Experience Night Game Drives

Consider participating in a night game drive to witness nocturnal wildlife in action, such as elusive predators and nocturnal mammals.

23. Prepare for Dusty Conditions

Tanzanian savannahs can get dusty, especially during the dry season. Carry a bandana or scarf to protect your face and camera gear.

24. Embrace the Serenity

Take moments to appreciate the tranquility of the wilderness and immerse yourself in the serenity of nature.

25. Leave No Trace

Respect the environment by leaving no trace of your presence. Dispose of waste responsibly and follow the principles of eco-friendly tourism.

What To Wear On A Safari in Tanzania

Guide to what to wear on safari in tanzania.

Packing for Tanzania was a little more challenging than for our usual travels.  We had never been on a safari before and don’t have any “safari-type” clothes.  We also wanted to pack light and share one bag between the two of us so I knew we had to pack smart .

I usually plan out my outfits for each day when I am packing for a trip.  My style is important to me but I still like to dress appropriately for the occasion.  When envisioning people on safari, typically what comes to mind are khaki vests, safari hats, cargo pants and hiking boots.

After our first day on safari we quickly realized “safari clothing” is not even necessary!  (At least not on your typical Tanzanian safari in the popular Northern Circuit ).  So don’t worry so much about what to wear!

What to pack for safari in Tanzania

Q: do i need to pack hiking boots for safari in tanzania.

We spent most of our time in the Land Cruiser.  There’s no need for hiking shoes.  Unless you have a planned hiking excursion on your itinerary, you probably won’t be doing much walking.  Save the weight in your luggage!

Safari Land Cruiser

I brought my Nike Frees and Ryan wore his Nike Roshes , both are nice and light.  But on our second day we wore flip flops .  It was nice to let our feet breathe and I decided to wear flip flops the rest of the week.

Land Cruiser and safari outfit

Q: Are cargo pants or vests with pockets necessary to wear on safari in Tanzania?

No need to wear cargo pants or vests with pockets on your Tanzania safari – unless you really have lots of things you want to carry right on you.  Honestly I just brought my purse along and Ryan brought a backpack with our cameras, binoculars, chargers and some cash.

Ngorongoro safari outfits

We saw other tourists all decked out with walking poles, safari hats, hiking boots, etc and we laughed to ourselves.  The most walking we saw people doing was from the safari vehicle to the bathroom and back.

In fact, on the second day, I wore a dress and was super comfortable .  I also wore shorts and light-weight shirts .  In the mornings it was chilly (around 10 degrees Celcius), especially in Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, but by midday it got warm.  I was never too hot, though.  Just bring layers and you will be comfortable.  A light jacket and light scarf was all I needed.

Light jacket and scarf during our early morning Ngorongoro crater descent

Q: Are there certain colors I should wear or not wear on safari in Tanzania?

If you are wondering what colors to wear on safari in Tanzania, try to stay away from wearing black .  For one, it gets super dusty with the dry dirt roads and safari trucks speeding past, kicking up clouds of dust.  Probably a good reason to stick to khaki and olive green colors.

Secondly, black and blue attract tsetse flies which are particularly a problem in Tarangire National Park.  The parks even hang black and blue flags on the trees everywhere (as seen below) to attract the tsetse flies and poison them.

Q: Do I need to wear a hat on safari in Tanzania?

A: not really..

Neither of us wore a hat once.  Ryan brought one but didn’t find he needed it.  All the safari vehicles we saw had pop-up roofs, so you are still covered over head .  I only ever really felt the sun hitting my arms and face through the side windows, but never my head.  And whenever we did get out of the vehicle, it was to use the bathroom or have a picnic, and there was always shade.

Safari outfit in Tarangire

Even though it’s Africa, I didn’t find we were out in the sun a lot.  It might also be because we were there in November so it wasn’t super sunny at all times.  If you are sensitive to the sun and you will be visiting during the dry months then bring a hat to be safe.

Q: What should I for sure wear on safari in Tanzania?

A: sunglasses and insect repellent..

Sunglasses are a good idea.  The sun is fierce and sunglasses also protect your eyes from all that dust .

Dusty Safari sunglasses

Also, bring insect repellent.  In November I didn’t notice many bugs except for in Tarangire so be sure to wear it there. But to be safe, might as well put it on every day.

And don’t forget a bathing suit!   Every lodge we stayed at had a beautiful pool.  It is definitely nice to relax after a long day of bumpy driving by taking a dip in the pool.

So helpful Louise! Didn’t know about the black/blue thing!

I’m glad you found it helpful, Jasmine! Thanks for reading 🙂 Yes, I kept seeing the black and blue flags hanging all throughout the parks and I was like what are those?! And our guide explained about them attracting the flies.

That was super helpful, gonna file this in my back pocket for future reference. I’m constantly wearing blacks and grays so I am very glad you told me not to wear exactly that! And knowing me, I’d totally be one of those noobs wearing stuffy hiking boots. Haha now I won’t be thanks to you!

Haha, glad you found it helpful,Constance!! Now you know you can just dress comfy when you go on safari 😉

Thank you. This is super helpful as we are getting ready to go on a safari in a few weeks. Your outfits are super cute and stylish. May I ask where did you get the dress?

Thanks for your comment, Aura! I am happy you found it helpful! I got the green dress at a store called Costa Blanca in Canada, it’s not a brand name or anything. Have an amazing time on safari!!

I have read a few ‘what to pack’posts. Yours is simple and covers it all. I like the pictures you posted. Perfect information. I’m ready to pack now. 🙂

Clothing for a safari in Tanzania

If you’re planning a trip to Africa and a safari in Tanzania , you should know that you need to pack the right clothes before leaving .

How to dress for a safari in Tanzania? In this article we’ll reveal everything that you should know about the perfect clothes to pack for this experience

How to dress for a Safari in Tanzania: the recommended clothing

One of the most exciting experiences to plan while organizing a trip to Tanzania is the Safari. Being able to explore nature up close, guided by experts, will give you the opportunity to discover the most authentic secrets of this land that enchants every traveler.

The type of Safari clothing is not designed to take memorable photos, but to ensure comfort, security and practicality during an unforgettable experience.

Among the items that you must pack we find:

  • Lightweight trekking pants : suitable to all seasons, they must keep you cool and ensure you comfort in your movements. Try to go for those in fabrics that dry quickly, so you can manage them better. A plus? The convertible models with zip, which can change from long to short.
  • Comfortable shorts : if you’re going to visit Tanzania in the hottest periods, the best thing to do is to bring some comfortable shorts that can be worn during the safari.
  • T-shirts and long-sleeved shirts : try to go for technical fabrics, suitable for protecting you from the sun, but also able to protect you from sweating excessively. Going for a specific type of safari clothing with fabrics that are able to keep the body temperature stable is certainly a good idea.
  • Windbreaker : even in safaris there’s the rule of dressing like an onion. That is why among the items to pack there should be a windbreaker to protect you from the air and make sure you don’t feel the drops in temperature.
  • Trekking shoes : pay attention to the shoes, we recommend the usage of trekking shoes, but do not bring them as the only pair of shoes, since, if never worn, they could cause pain and blisters. Pack a pair of comfortable, closed and well-structured sneakers.
  • Swimsuit : maybe it may seem strange, but a lot of lodges have a swimming pool and this can allow for a different type of break. It does not take up a lot of space.

Rules for dressing during a Safari

There are very few rules for dressing during a Safari : it is recommended to wear comfortable and covering clothes , preferring light and neutral colors such as brown, sand, beige or gray. For what concerns the clothing, it is suggested to choose lightwear but covering fabrics and great attention is paid to shoes.

As for accessories, a hat and sunglasses are a must . We recommend bringing a small beauty case with sunscreen with protection filters and a repellent that can protect you from insect bite.

To choose the correct outfit, you need to consider the period: a safari in august has maximum temperatures of 27° and low humidity. This means your adventure won’t be excessively hot. While in september the temperatures , especially in the northern parks, are known for going from 15 to 27°

When you get dressed for a safari, you need to keep in mind the type of excursion that you’re facing. Normally, you stay out the entire day, from sunrise to sunset, this leads you to different temperatures during the day and it is important to have everything you need with you in order to being able to protect yourself from wind blows or the sun.

In addition to advice on what to bring, we want to give you some advice on what to avoid : not only dark colors are banned, but also white. These colors seem to be preferred by mosquitoes and tsetse flies. Do not think that short sleeves t-shirts or tank tops are the best option, long sleeves are not unbearable and can help you to protect you from insect bites.

What To Wear On Safari in Tanzania

Tanzania is a beautiful country to visit. It is big and there is something to see in every corner. This amazing piece of Africa has about 16 game parks and reserves. So there is so much wildlife to see. Not forgetting the vast sandy beaches and the coastal towns and historical sites. You definitely need to make plans to go on a Tanzania safari holiday if you haven’t yet.

If you are planning a Tanzania safari trip, you will need the right clothes for the adventure; you don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb when you are wearing the wrong clothes. Just because you are a tourist doesn’t mean you can’t blend in with the environment you are visiting. So here are few tips on what to wear on a Tanzania safari.

Depending on what safari activities you choose, your clothes might vary.

If you are going game viewing, keep it simple. Safari shorts or trousers are good and comfortable. In cargo style you have enough pockets to carry your small accessories, and these come in neutral colors which blend in with the African wilderness. Khakis and some jeans could work too. Remember keep the colors neutral and stay away from dark jeans.

Safari shirts both long and short sleeved are the way to go. T-shirts too are good too. They are comfortable. If you can get some synthetic moisture wicking shirt you will be a very happy camper. Again; neutral colors, khakis, browns and greens.

If you are going mountain climbing up Mount Kilimanjaro, you will be doing a lot of layering so you need shirts, two fleeces one thick and on medium, and a rain jackets, or water proof jackets. For trousers, stay away from jeans if you can, the get heavy and when drenched they are muggy and uncomfortable. Safari trousers in synthetic fabric will be comfortable. Bottoms too can be layered.

Remember to carry a warm jacket, waterproof if you are on a wildlife safari.

If a sunny holiday at the beaches on the Tanzania coast and in Zanzibar are what you are going for. Then get out your summer wardrobe, but try not to scandalize the local communities. Swim suits in which to enjoy the beaches, shorts and comfortable shirts to relax. Clothing for a beach holiday in Tanzania is pretty easy to pack for. And yes you can park your jeans and dresses.

What shoes do you need on a Tanzania safari?

If you are going for a wildlife safari, you will need boots, sandals, and walking shoes. Sturdy leather boots are hat we recommend especially for game drives and safari walks in the parks, or chimpanzee trekking in the northern circuit game parks. Make sure these are well broken in before your trip so your feet can be comfortable. You need sandals too for relaxing around the campsite, lodges and walking through the nearby towns; walking shoes are good for easy guided walks and tours of historical sites.

For mountain climbing you needs hiking boots. Strong, fitting and comfortable hiking boots. Preferably high ones which will protect you feet and ankles from insects and the cold.

Sandals and easy comfortable walking shoes are good for beach holidays be sure to carry those. Do not forget to pack warm socks if you are mountain climbing, hiking or tracking primates. Your feet need to be kept warm.

Head gear and accessories

For whatever kind of safari you hope to enjoy in Tanzania you will find that there is and accessory you will need for your head. For mountain climbing you will need a hat, balaclava, or a cap to protect your head and shield you face from the cold wind. For a wildlife safari in any of the game parks, you will need a wide brim hat to shield you from the hot African sun and protect your eyes and neck. Pair that hat with a good pair of sunglasses and you will be just fine.

For the beach a hat and sunglasses should keep you comfortable.

In some area like in the mountains, hand gloves and under gloves might be necessary. Other accessories you could carry with you are binoculars, and camera.

All in all be sure to dress right for your safari adventure whatever it might be. Having the right clothes is half way a guarantee of fun.

Tanzania is home to the Serengeti, the Kilimanjaro mountain, Ruaha, one of the few places you could see the great wildebeest migration, and so much more. You want to enjoy all this in comfort, so hop right, and pack right.

What to Wear in Tanzania

Top style tips for tanzania.

  • Casual, comfortable clothes are the key when travelling in Tanzania.
  • During the day it is hot so our advice is to pack lightweight layers in natural fabrics such as linen, bamboo and cotton that will keep you cool and are easier to wash and dry.
  • For safari we suggest keeping to light colours , but not white – it will get dirty and dusty very quickly.
  • It is very important to note that camouflage or military clothing is not permitted.
  • Avoid blue or black clothing too – the tsetse flies are drawn to these colours, and their bite can give you African Sleeping Sickness.
  • If you are on safari, the idea is to relax and enjoy your time under the African sky, and listen to the calls of the wild all around you! Dinner dress is therefore casual and comfortable.
  • Nighttime and early morning game drives can be cold, so pack a warm hat, scarf, gloves and a fleece or jacket.
  • Don't forget a safari hat to protect you from the sun. Wear plenty of sunscreen (we love the Riemann P20 range for 10 hour protection) and sunglasses , and remember your insect/mosquito repellent .
  • It would be a good idea to pack a lightweight and versatile travel jacket. We like the  SCOTTeVEST  range because they have been specifically designed with travel in mind, offer plenty of storage pockets and have awesome additional features like RFID security and Personal Area Network connectivity.

Shoes to pack for Tanzania

  • Comfortable walking shoes are important as the roads are dusty and uneven. We love Hotter shoes , for total comfort along with style.
  • We like Thorlos hiking socks too, they keep your feet dry and comfortable in all climates.
  • Avoid going barefoot on beaches ; chigoe fleas can dig into your feet and cause boils and sores. You may like to wear dive shoes to protect your feet.

Clothing tips for women

  • Avoid wearing very short skirts or shorts as this will cause offence , and strappy tops can also be frowned upon. Our advice is to wear trousers or a knee-length or longer skirt, and tops which cover your shoulders. These will protect you from the sun too.
  • If you are visiting the beaches pack your swimwear but keep it strictly to the beach or pool area, otherwise cover up with a kaftan or sarong. You'll cause offence otherwise.
  • Leave your valuables and expensive jewellery at home, you really won't need them.
  • If you're dressing for dinner in the beach resorts, a few simple pieces of costume jewellery will dress up an outfit.
  • A pashmina or sarong is a versatile item that you can use for sun protection or to ‘glam' up the simplest of outfits if you feel like a change.
  • If visiting towns and villages, the local women wear an array of colours so add your pashmina or a wrap to brighten up your outfit.

Clothing tips for men

  • Long trousers are a good idea – they protect against the sun by day, mosquitoes by night, and are more culturally acceptable in non-tourist areas.
  • But if you are heading to the beaches , try the Madda Fella range of shirts, shorts, polos and swimwear.

Pack for the weather

  • If you plan to visit between November and December, prepare for afternoon rainstorms by taking a light raincoat.
  • April and May being the rainy season are best avoided all together.
  • It does cool off at night – especially in July and August – so pack a pashmina or jumper.

Regions of Tanzania

  • The mountains will be cooler because of the altitude so pack warmer layers and a waterproof jacket for this terrain. light wool is a good choice to wear against your skin as it naturally helps to regulate your body temperature . It keeps you warm in the cold, wicks away moisture when it's hot, and doesn't retain odours – even after prolonged wear.

Travel essentials for Tanzania

  • A soft-sided rucksack is more practical than a hard suitcase for safari holidays – it's easier to fit into the small planes or transfer vehicles. Using packing cubes can help to keep your belongings tidy whilst compressing the volume too.
  • Internal flights (including transfers to Zanzibar) often have much lower baggage limits than your international carrier. Use an accurate luggage scale to ensure you keep within the weight allowance.
  • Combine your rucksack with a sling bag or lightweight day sack for sightseeing trips and game drives.
  • Look after your mobile phone with a phone bunjee – it protects against loss, theft and damage. You may like to carry a solar powered charger too, to boost your battery when out and about – you don't want to miss that great photo opportunity!
  • To use electrical gadgets you may need a travel adapter plug , and also a step down voltage converter if your devices are not designed for the local voltage (230V) .
  • Don’t drink or even brush your teeth in tap water . Consider taking a LifeStraw Filtration Water Bottle .
  • And don't forget to leave room for souvenirs on the way home! Look out for handicrafts made from wood and stone , and brightly coloured textiles .

I went on a budget and a luxury safari in Africa. Here's how they compare — and the one thing you really need to look for when booking.

  • I have been on two glamping safari trips in Africa on two very different budgets.
  • My all-inclusive stay was great but my cheaper glamping experience was fine, too.
  • Private game reserves are actually the most important thing to splurge on, not accommodations.

Insider Today

I've been on two African safari trips . Both involved glamping but on completely different budgets.

My first more affordable trip, a lodge in South Africa with separate safari excursions, cost me about $1,100. My second, an all-inclusive lodge in Tanzania, cost me about $4,000 after a 50% off deal.

Here's how the two compare and what I think you should look for before you plan an African safari .

My affordable safari experience was at Jackalberry Ridge, where some tents cost $80 a night.

The first time I went on a safari, I went to Kruger National Park in South Africa. I didn't book a tour package, instead opting to stay at affordable lodging and book safari day trips to the park.

I stayed five nights near Kruger and one night in Johannesburg before my flight home. I spent around $1,100 for lodging, safari tours, a rental car, and food (not including flights).

After landing in Johannesburg, I rented a car ($130 for five days) to drive to my lodging in Marloth Park, a town bordering the edge of Kruger National Park.

I was staying at Jackalberry Ridge , a self-catering accommodation with no on-site restaurant, no room service, and limited housekeeping.

The one-bedroom tents at Jackalberry Ridge go for as low as $80 a night, and two-bedroom tents go for $135.

When I checked in late, there was no one at the reception desk — just an envelope with my name on it containing my keys and a map.

My main tent felt pretty spacious, with a king bed and a living-room area.

I had booked a two-bedroom unit (two tents), but my friend couldn't come at the last minute. Since I couldn't change the reservation, I still stayed in the two-bedroom unit and my friend paid her share.

The campsite came with a small pool to dip in, but it was covered as the weather was pretty cold.

Each unit had a private bathroom and kitchen in a building separate from the tents, so I needed to leave my tent to use the bathroom at night.

The bathroom was standard, with a tub, shower, and toilet.

This is glamping, so I had access to running water and a flushing toilet. I had hot water, but I found it went from scalding hot to cold in a few seconds.

I ended up taking quick showers and just washing my hair with cold water, which wasn't ideal since it was a little chilly in the morning.

It's also worth noting that Jackalberry Ridge was renovated recently, so the issue I had with hot water may have been fixed now.

I also had access to a kitchen in the same building as the bathroom.

The kitchen was well-equipped with things like pots, a microwave, and a sink, so I could cook meals or heat up leftovers.

I signed up for a couple of day safaris and did one at night.

Although I had a rental car and could've done a self-drive safari around Kruger, I didn't trust myself to spot animals while focusing on the roads.

Instead, I signed up for a couple of day safaris and one night safari. The safari tour prices often don't include the park entrance fee (about $25 per person per day), which I paid when I got to the entrance.

My three safari trips and park fees came to around $280.

I got to see zebras, giraffes, and more.

tanzania safari outfits

I saw a lot on the safari, including zebras, impalas, kudus, and giraffes. I saw lions and a leopard, although only from afar with binoculars. I even got a glimpse of the elusive rhinoceros.

I also spent one day taking another popular day trip in the area, the Panorama Route. This scenic road goes past Lisbon Falls and the beautiful Blyde River Canyon. The guided tour was $110.

As far as my very first safari trip goes, it was great. I got to see the Big Five , even though some of them were pretty far away.

For my next safari trip, I leveled up.

I saw a Travelzoo deal for an all-inclusive safari at Taasa Lodge , a five-star luxury safari in Tanzania.

The deal was $6,000 for two people for a whole week — the lodge is usually $12,950 for two for seven nights. It was still a splurge, but I'd be saving more than 50% on a bucket-list experience.

The package came with seven nights of lodging, two safari activities a day, three daily meals, and drinks.

Still, we spent more than the original advertised price. There are obligatory "daily government park fees" and "daily concession fees" that added about $893 per person to our bill.

We also had to take a regional flight to get to Taasa, which was more expensive than my rental car in South Africa.

To redeem the Travelzoo deal, we had to complete our booking through a specific travel agency.

We ended up opting for an all-inclusive add-on package which includes the $893 fees above, domestic airfares from Arusha to Taasa (which would already cost around $600), and our agency arranging our Tanzanian tourist visa and airport transfers. The add-on also included extra activities at the resort (more on that later).

Overall, we paid $1,715 per person on top of the $3,000 each for the lodge stay.

I hadn't anticipated paying so many extras, but it was nice to have someone take care of the logistics of getting to the resort.

My tent was luxurious and equipped with a comfortable king bed and a large living room.

When I arrived at the lodge, the staff greeted me with a glass of juice and a wet towel to refresh myself.

My tent was quite spacious. I especially liked that it had a desk and plenty of outlets I could use to charge my electronics. Our bathroom was behind our bed, and I was glad it was inside the tent this time.

We also got a butler who kept track of our schedules and made sure we had what we needed.

The bathroom felt spacious, with two sinks and a shower.

tanzania safari outfits

The shower's hot water was great and we had double sinks we could get ready at.

Another perk of the lodge is that we could have staff do our laundry every day, which meant we could pack less clothing.

There's a main lodge with a communal living room, dining area, and bar.

tanzania safari outfits

We got breakfast at the buffet in the main lodge unless we were going on a morning safari.

Most people ate dinner in the dining room, but we could've requested to have food brought to our tent.

We also passed a small pool next to the main lodge.

tanzania safari outfits

The pool was on the small side, but certainly had great views.

I didn't end up using it as my afternoons were filled with safari, and the mornings and evenings were chilly.

On the mornings with an early safari, we had a simple breakfast next to our Land Cruiser.

tanzania safari outfits

Safari breakfasts consisted of hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, doughnuts, bacon and sausage, fruits, and orange juice. Staff also made French-press coffee, which we could spike with cream liqueur.

Our Land Cruiser had a cooler of beers and sodas in the back, too.

At the private game reserve, we got pretty close to wildlife.

tanzania safari outfits

Taasa is located inside a private game reserve, which means staff can pretty much drive anywhere within it. This was a huge leg up from my day trips in Kruger National Park on my last safari.

Inside national parks like Kruger or Serengeti, you're only allowed to drive on designated roads for safety reasons (both for the tourists and the animals).

But in a private reserve, guides can drive offroad. Plus, the guides communicate with each other when they find something special.

We saw a bunch of animals in the private reserve and Serengeti.

tanzania safari outfits

We also left the reserve to spend a couple of days going into Serengeti National Park, as there were things you could only find there instead of within the private reserve.

For example, I'd planned my trip to take place during the Great Migration, and I wanted to see wildebeests crossing the Mara River.

We also went to Serengeti to find rhinoceros and hippopotamus.

Every dinner at the resort consisted of three courses: soup, an entrée, and a dessert.

tanzania safari outfits

The main course was usually some type of Western food, and there was always a vegetarian option.

It would've been nice to be offered more typical Tanzanian dishes, though. For me, part of the fun of traveling is learning about different countries' cuisines.

I also had access to an open bar in the main lodge. Staff could make simple cocktails, and there was lots of beer and wine. The drinks were all included with the price of the stay (except for fancy Champagnes and select wines).

One morning, we had a special breakfast on the plains.

tanzania safari outfits

On one day of the trip, we had a special bush breakfast. It was one of the extra activities we got with that special add-on package.

Instead of our usual safari breakfast, we had freshly prepared omelets in the wild.

We also got another special treat in the bush that morning — a toilet!

tanzania safari outfits

When you're offroading looking for wild animals, you can end up pretty far from a proper toilet.

On most safari days, the car stops (when guides think it's safe), and people go behind the car to do their business.

This was the only time we had this portable toilet while out on a safari. On my budget safari day trips at Kruger, we'd have to wait until we reached a rest-stop facility.

Again, we spent a lot of time watching lions.

tanzania safari outfits

After breakfast, we were back in safari mode.

We found a family of lions, and as we were in the private reserve, we were able to stay and watch the cubs play for quite a while.

At Kruger, when lions are spotted, traffic starts backing up on the road as all the safari cruisers stop to look, so you can't stay too long.

Here, we knew no one else would be coming.

On a different morning, our guide got a tip that another car had found a leopard sleeping.

tanzania safari outfits

The communication between guides in the private reserve paid off when one spotted a sleeping leopard.

When our group arrived, the leopard was napping on the tree next to his catch. Eventually, it came down, and we got a better look.

Our trip ended with a great happy hour and outdoor dinner.

tanzania safari outfits

Other activities that were part of our add-on package included a visit to a Maasai village in Kenya and a special happy hour and barbecue dinner.

And, for our journey home, the travel agency took care of everything, including transfers, until we boarded our international flight.

My big takeaway is that it's really worth paying to be inside a private reserve.

tanzania safari outfits

In my opinion, the difference between these two safari trips that's the most worth paying for is being in a private reserve.

After all, the main reason I fly to Africa is for the safari, not the glamping.

I much preferred my lodging at Taasa, mostly because of the bathroom. But if I hadn't had the 50% off deal, I'm not sure the full price would've been worth it.

Still, it was a wonderful experience, and if I had more money, I may feel differently. Even so, the budget glamping was pretty comfortable and just fine for a week.

But again, as far as the safari experience goes, the private reserve is hard to beat. Being able to go offroading and get closer to the animals is quite the experience.

And if luxurious lodges are out of the question, private reserves can also be visited more affordably. Some lodges inside private reserves, like Shindzela or Rhino River Lodge, can cost around $250 per person per night.
