What We Believe

There is only one living and true God, and in the unity of this Godhead there are three persons of one substance: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The Son, who is the Word of the Father, took man’s nature in the womb of the virgin Mary, was born, actually suffered, was crucified, dead, and buried, to reconcile the Father to us, and to make atonement of our sin.

Christ did rise from the dead and ascended into heaven and there sits until He shall return to judge all men at the last day.

All Scripture is God-breathed, or inspired by God—that the Bible is composed of sixty-six books and divided into two departments, the Old and New Testaments. We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, the full and complete revelation of the plan and history of redemption (II Timothy 3:16-17).

Eternal life with God in heaven is a portion of the reward to those who are born again; and that everlasting banishment from the presence of the Lord and unending torture in hell are the wages of those who reject Christ as their personal Savior (Matthew 25:46; Psalm 9:17; Revelation 21:7-8).

Jesus Christ shed His blood for the remission of all sin (Romans 3:25; I John 3:5-10; Ephesians 2:1-10).

And teach the doctrine of justification by faith alone (Romans 5:1).

Sanctification is a work of the Holy Spirit which begins at the moment of the new birth. This work of the Spirit deals with the inherited sin nature of man, and is obtained by faith on the part of the believer (John 15:2; Acts 26:18).

Baptism in the Holy Spirit is obtained by an act of faith on the part of the believer, and the fruit of this experience is clearly described in Galatians 5:22-23. In Acts 1:8 the Word of God declares the primary purpose of this experience—the empowerment of the believer to be an effective witness (Luke 11:13; Acts 1:5; 2:14; 8:17; 10:44-46; 19:6).

In divine healing provided through the atonement (Isaiah 53:4-5; Matthew 8:16-17; Mark 16:14-18; James 5:14-16; Exodus 15:26).

In the imminent, personal, premillennial second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (I Thessalonians 4:15-18; Titus 2:13; II Peter 3:1-4; Matthew 24:29-44).

It is the responsibility of every believer to dedicate his life to carrying out the work of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-20; Acts 1:8).

About Journey Church

Journey Through the Years

Charleston, South Carolina is known as the Holy City; and across its skyline there are hundreds of churches. But unfortunately many areas in Charleston are known as 10% regions, which means that less than 10% of the people who live in Charleston are associated with an evangelical community church. 

So God is set on seeing every man, woman, and child has multiple opportunities to see, hear, and respond to the gospel. Opportunities for the people in our city to be redeemed through the church in Charleston.

Journey Church was birthed out of the same passion to see this city and its people redeemed and in a relationship with Jesus Christ. Twelve adults and eight children partnered with the Journey Church to plant this church that is dedicated to scattering missionaries across the city and planting churches throughout the world. These twelve adults and these eight children moved down from Mount Washington, Kentucky–sent from a church in Mount Washington–to see this kind of church, a unique church planted in the city, for the city, so that God’s people might be redeemed to Himself. These adults and children began to rally around this unique vision, and this unique vision began to rally new people to the cause.

The church that started in a living room began to quickly expand, challenging us for the first time: would we be a church that exists for ourselves? Or would we be the type of church that exists so that people who are not yet with us and not yet with God would have the opportunity to be in community with us and with God?

We started our first worship service in September of 2007. A sister church, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, allowed for us to use their facility starting at 5pm, and our church grew there for 2.5 years, growing to about 110 people in worship. Again for the second time, this budding and thriving church faced the same decision we had faced while in my living room: would we exist for ourselves? Would we be satisfied, or would we continue to reach out to those that are far from God?

We made the decision in 2010 to move into our Treeland Drive location, where the church grew to 500. In 2021, our founding pastor became a church planting strategist for the North American Mission Board in the city of Los Angeles. Journey Church began a months-long process with our elders and search committee to locate God’s next Lead Pastor, and in March of 2022, partners confirmed the nomination of Pastor Chris Fowler. 

All of these changes have brought new and exciting challenges. But what we’ve never turned away from is our mission: that we would make sure that every man, woman, and child would have multiple opportunities to see, hear, and respond to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

We want to be a church that develops and deploys missionary disciples all across our city, sees families redeemed, and sees churches planted.

“If you continue in My Word, then you are truly My disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” - Jesus, John 8:31-32

Who or what do you assume to be true? The original “Bad News Bears” movie introduced me to the danger of making assumptions – what happens to “u” and “me” when we assume. It’s funny in a movie, not so much in real life.  If we operate on false assumptions and with misguided beliefs we will trust in things that are not true. Ultimately this takes away our freedom, makes us vulnerable and risks hurting others.

Soon after Jesus so kindly and courageously defended the woman caught in adultery, the religious leaders assault Him with challenging words and questions. Jesus tells those who trust in Him that if they listen to and practice His Word then they will know the truth and the truth will set them free. We learn here that spiritual growth, maturity, and true freedom prove to be the direct result of knowing and practicing the teachings (Word) of Jesus.

Jesus’ words both reflect and fulfill the teaching of the rest of what we call the Bible. The Scriptures of the Old Testament point forward to Jesus and the New Testament points back to Him. Jesus quoted the Old and the New quotes Jesus. Thus, spiritual maturity, growth and freedom follow our knowledge and practice of the Word.   

Starting in the Fall of 2021, Westminster will embark on a Journey through the Christian Bible - the most printed, most sold, most censored, most impactful, and often most misunderstood (if not misused) book in the world. Our goal is to encourage and equip one another to engage with Jesus through Scripture in a life-transforming way.

We invite you to join us on this Journey along several different tracks:

• Sunday Sermons will lead us through the Grand Story of Scripture. 
• A reading plan to read through the Bible in a year. 
• Sermon-based small groups and small group bible studies.
• Bible Journey – year-long interactive, internet-based, self-paced and high-quality curriculum for individuals, families, or groups interested in a deeper dive into the Word. This would involve a little over an hour a
• week. (If you are interested, please contact  Justin Lewis .)

These different tracks are not mutually exclusive and will travel at different paces. We hope you will make weekly worship a priority in your life but also add these other spiritual practices to enhance your spiritual growth personally and our spiritual growth as a community of faith.

Please prayerfully consider the journey you will take with us this coming year. As you do, imagine the difference a deeper understanding of God and His Word would make in your life, the life of your family, our community of faith, and our world.
