Just for laughs: Henning Wehn takes it on, from Covid to the economy and beyond
Is Henning Wehn the ultimate outsider comedian?
With decades of stereotyping embedded in the British psyche that Germans have no sense of humour, this North Rhine Westphalia-born, London-based stand-up has been forging his own path (and a very humorous one it is too, thanks very much Basil Fawlty) for the best part of 20 years.
But call him an alternative comedian and he will baulk at that notion (even though he did appear in a stand-up TV showcase called The Alternative Comedy Experience on Comedy Central in 2013).
“I would see myself as the ultimate representative of the establishment,” Henning insists ahead of his It’ll All Come Out In The Wash tour which is heading to Dundee and Arbroath.
“I suppose what I do might be called subversive but I don’t feel I’m part of a big movement.
“It’s all about ticket-shifting ability; everyone in a certain bracket will be in a certain theatre, so you could have tribute bands, Jason Donovan, Stewart Lee, Jim Davidson and me in the same place.
“Whoever it is, we’re in there for one evening and making sure the restaurant next door is having people in.”
The economy on his mind
The economy is one of the things on Henning’s mind with his new show which he describes as ‘an unbiased look at the Covid crisis’.
This follows his equally even-handed previous comedic investigations into Brexit and immigration.
“If I can look back at the last show, the Brexit one, I found it quite easy to be ambivalent about it, because it doesn’t really affect me one way or another.
“It’s different if you worked in a particular industry such as export, which then becomes harder with more paperwork to deal with.
“But this one was a very different story such as if you had a business for 15 years and all of a sudden, through no fault of your own, you’re told you can’t run it.
“Covid certainly does have more impact on people’s lives. There are plenty jokes to be made about all that but you have to be willing to see them.”
Greatest hits and a pandemic twist
This show is essentially a greatest hits package in the first half before he takes on the pandemic in part two.
Whether people will emerge knowing what Henning’s real opinion is on coronavirus as well as the world’s reaction to it is up for debate.
But there’s one thing he’s convinced everyone will find a common ground on.
“When it comes to conspiracy theorists, well, we need a definition of that.
Idiots and conspiracy theories
“For me, a conspiracy theorist is someone who challenges the prevailing narrative, and I don’t think that’s a crime. It certainly shouldn’t define someone as a loon or something.
“With Covid, everyone will agree that there are far more idiots in the country than we previously thought. While we can all agree on that, we can’t agree on who the idiots are: the ones who followed the guidelines or the ones who didn’t?”
Henning has been performing on the British comedy circuit and at festivals here for 19 years now and with shows such as Westphalia Is Not An Option and Eins, Zwei, DIY, he has landed a large following.
With such success on stage comes its inevitable small-screen benefits, and he’s been on TV in Comedians Giving Lectures, 8 Out Of Ten Cats, Have I Got News For You, and Guessable.
Playing live is where it’s at
But playing live is where it’s at for Henning. This is a lengthy tour. Already underway, it takes a residency at Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall in August and stretches all the way through to next March.
So there is likely to be a distinct change from the first show to the last.
“You always tweak, though I’m not sure how noticeable that would be to an audience. But at the very least you need to keep it interesting for yourself.
“To keep it fresh you just shift your focus, perform it slightly differently, a gesture here and there, or swap those two words round here and there.”
But does he have an over-riding message for those thinking about popping along to see It’ll All Come Out In The Wash: “everyone is welcome!”
- Henning Wehn: It’ll All Come Out In The Wash, Webster Theatre, Arbroath, April 21; Whitehall Theatre, Dundee, April 22.

Review: Henning Wehn brings his It’ll All Come Out in the Wash tour to Cambridge
When arriving at out seats for this show from the German comedy ambassador, there were cards offering us - and indeed everyone else in the auditorium - the chance to win some German wine. All we had to do was highlight out “favourite palaver”: Brexit or Covid. Henning would go on to talk quite a bit about both.
Entering from the back and running down the aisle and up onto the stage, the energetic television regular began by apologising to the Germans in the audience for the late start and saying “Welcome to my bunker” (the Second World War, and Britain’s ongoing fascination with it, cropped up quite a lot too).
For example, he recalled that on his first night in England, he put the TV on and there was a documentary about the war on. “What are the chances?” he said to himself at the time. “Actually, about 100 per cent,” he joked.
Commenting on popular British stereotypes of the Germans, he noted that Germans like to laugh but that they “like to get the work done first as opposed to instead of”. He made laugh-out-loud observations on British and German culture - and our various differences - all delivered in that very likeable, winning style.
He highlighted the fact that Germans don’t joke about the Brits as much as we do about them, noting that we’re not as important for them, and that they prefer instead to joke about the Dutch, the Danes, the Polish and the Turkish.
He also found a fellow German sitting at the front and conversed with her in their native tongue ignoring everyone else, accurately comparing that to what we Brits tend to do whenever we’re abroad - but without the need to shout.
Henning read out some highly amusing observations on geese from the BBC Radio 4 programme The Unbelievable Truth and then went off for the interval, leaving us with the music of Nena, of 99 Red Balloons fame, revealing that she is also from his home town of Hagen, near the Dutch border.
After half an hour of Nena, Henning ran back out clapping along to a It’ll All Come Out in the Wash theme tune, noting that it went on too long but that it would help eat into the hour (the second part was the ‘main show’).
He had a fair amount to say on the subject of the pandemic, stating that he was glad he spent it here thanks to events such as Captain Tom, with that all-important connection to the war, walking around his garden for charity, and the Thursday night clapping. “In Germany, we just tried to deal with the problem - admittedly not very well,” he said.
His musings on things like Covid and on being a foreigner in the UK were poignant, witty and varied - although the pace flagged a little once or twice during the second part - without really taking a particularly strong stance on things one way or another (after all, this was a comedy gig, not a political rally).
He also produced some hilarious, self-drawn graphs with some surprising results. “Next slide, please,” he said in between each one, echoing the Downing Street briefings.
Henning was keen to know what we the audience thought of the show, encouraging us to go on his website and leave a comment. He ended the proceedings by reading out a couple of comments, one from an NHS doctor who very much enjoyed it, and one from a woman who was so ‘offended’ that she walked out.
Offbeat, engaging and, most importantly, fun, Henning Wehn has a real amiability and warmth about him, and his use of colloquial English and observations on English culture and our unique idiosyncrasies and eccentricities - all delivered from the point of view of a sceptical and rather world-weary outsider - are second to none. In a word, “wunderbar!”

German comedy ambassador Henning Wehn is coming to Aberdeen and Inverness
While his new show is all about the coronavirus crisis, Henning Wehn was always certain the pandemic wouldn’t get in the way of his tour – simply because he predicted the whole thing.
Just when the self-proclaimed German comedy ambassador’s previous tour Get On With It was finishing up, he announced his plans to stop touring for a year.
It just so happened that his tour ended in March 2020 and the whole world was forced to “take a year off”.
“It was my plan to take 2020 off but when I said that, I didn’t expect that everyone else will be off for a year too,” said Henning.
It’s also a bit spooky that in late 2021 the Covid measures came into play the exact week he finished touring.
And since most rules have now been removed, the comedian is excited to be back on the road with It’ll All Come Out In The Wash which he says is his “unbiased looked on the Covid crisis” and it definitely isn’t all “doom and gloom”.
Excited to be back on tour
“I’m always looking forward to being back on tour,” said Henning.
“Touring is about writing, performing and travelling – and I enjoy all three.”
And the funnyman cannot wait to be back playing for Aberdeen audiences on April 23.
“I’ve been to Aberdeen a few times,” said Henning.
“There used to be something called Aberdeen Beer Fest and I hosted that for a few years.
“I supported Stewart Lee on tour there and I’ve been there with my own solo shows.”
Aberdeen bucket list
While he visited Aberdeen on a number of occasions and enjoyed being in the city, there’s still something on his “Aberdeen bucket list”.
He said: “I like the City of Granite. I took a ferry to Shetland from Aberdeen but one thing I haven’t managed is to go to Pittodrie – I’ve never been to a game so that has to change.”
Henning is grateful he has an “appreciative” north-east fanbase that always supports him.
He said: “In the early days when you start doing stand-up, it’s harder to gig. It’s because you’re not as clued-up as a performer but it can also be a setup when no one wants to be at a comedy gig.
“They just put a mic stand in the corner of a bar and people in there just want a quiet time and some idiot pipes up in the corner. So these audiences aren’t as appreciative and think you’re a nuisance.”
When Henning is not touring, comedy fans can also spot him on TV. He previously appeared on Would I Lie To You, 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Have I Got News For You and a few other programmes.
He said: “They (the TV programmes) are enjoyable but nothing beats doing live stand-up. On TV, as much as it might be fun, there is a lot of waiting and they slap some make-up on you and say ‘do this and do that’ and you have to be there five hours early.
“But with stand-up, it’s just my tour manager and I turning up to a venue and do a quick sound and light check and everything’s got purpose to it.”

Henning Wehn is a self-appointed German Comedy Ambassador to The United Kingdom, which isn't the easiest of jobs because Germans allegedly do not have a sense of humour. However, throughout his comedy he effectively playing on the English stereotype of Germans as humourless Nazis, obsessed with efficiency. Having moved to the UK in 2002, working in the marketing department of Wycombe Wanderers FC, Henning ‘took office' in 2003 after watching a comedy club open mic night that left him convinced that he would do better. He has been performing stand-up comedy ever since. Henning regularly appears with fellow German performer Otto Kuhnle, and their show 1000 Years of German Humour was nominated for the Barry Award at the 2009 Melbourne Comedy Festival. He also won the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year, 2005. Henning Wehn's “beautifully crafted diatribes” (Time Out) are delivered with a passion that seems all too real and his material covers topics from football to the price of second-hand shoes, what the Germans think of our beloved 'Allo 'Allo series, to why humour is overrated and stand-up comedy pointless. His numerous television appearances include 8 Out of 10 cats, Would I Lie To You, Have I Got News For You, QI, Ths Week and Ten O'Clock Live. Regular radio appearances include Radio 5 Live's Fighting talk, Radio 4's The News Quiz, The Now Show (Radio 4), The Unbelievable Truth (Radio 4) & Henning Knows Best (BBC Radio 2)
