The Best Security Camera Apps for Wi-Fi Cameras 2024

  • By AlfredCamera
  • July 4, 2023

Finding the perfect security camera isn’t just about choosing the device with the highest quality image or the best price tag.

Nowadays, all popular security cameras require downloading an app to use them.

In fact, much of the ‘user experience’ is based around the security camera’s app.

So what are the best security camera apps for Android and iPhone in 2024? Find out below.

When picking out the best security camera apps we love, we considered: User interface – how easy is it for users to navigate the app? Design – how attractive is the app to look at? Features – what unique features does the app have, and does it do them well? Setup – how long does setup take? Stability – does the app suffer from crashes or lag?

Table of Contents

1. AlfredCamera App

Available on Google Play and the App Store .

  • Live stream responsiveness is better than many other security camera apps
  • Quality achieved relies on the phone’s native hardware capabilities
  • No voice assistant integration (Alexa, Google, etc.)

AlfredCamera ’s made a name for itself as the most popular dedicated security camera app for Android and iPhone, with over 70 million downloads.

The user interface is minimal, and doesn’t require going through menu after menu to get to certain settings or features.

Camera devices are stacked on a single tab, from which users can view live streams. In the ‘More’ tab is a ‘Moments’ feature, where users find recorded events.

Live feeds are super reliable, and an unlimited number of devices can be added for free, no doubt helping AlfredCamera gain its reputation as the best Wi-Fi camera app for Android and iOS.

What others are saying… ‘ It’s hard to beat technology that’s free and packed with features. Sure, Alfred-enabled smartphones and tablets can’t quite rival high-tech home security cameras, but they’re an excellent alternative if you’re on a tight budget. And we love that you can repurpose your old devices to cut down on electronics waste.’   –   Sally Jones for Safe Smart Living .

Don’t have a hardware security camera? No worries! At AlfredCamera, we believe everyone has the right to feel safe and secure. Check out our article on how to set up a phone as a security camera and discover how dedicated apps can be used as an alternative method of surveillance.

AlfredCamera is available for free on the  App Store and Google Play Store .

2. Kasa Smart App

  • Extensive automation options that are made much more manageable than in other smart home apps
  • Modern, chic design
  • The extent of settings options for the products and automations might be overwhelming at first
  • Learning curve

The Kasa Smart app acts as a hub for all kinds of home automation . Smart lighting, smart plugs, and security cameras provided under the Kasa brand all work with the app.

For new users, there is a moderate learning curve. The automation on offer here goes surprisingly deep. ‘Scenes’, for example, are timed schedules that stack multiple automations under one command.

Is there one app for all IP cameras? Although there are definitely apps out there supposedly designed for use with different brands of IP camera, these are temperamental and could potentially pose security risks. Always use the official app designed for use with your security camera model of choice.

As for security camera streaming, the interface is simple and easy to use, offering lots of customization, particularly when it comes to motion detection.

Though the five tabs and extensive settings options for its products might be overwhelming at first, this is a beautifully designed app that works flawlessly and successfully encourages manageable home automation.

What others are saying… ‘As for the app, TP-Link isn’t particularly known for its software prowess, but the Kasa app is really polished and responsive. The camera and its feed can be accessed in just a second or two, and if you’ve got other compatible TP-Link Kasa devices, these appear in the app too. Settings and options (like video feed quality) can be easily found.’   –   David Nield for T3 .

3. Wyze App

  • Great, straightforward options for automation
  • Beautiful design
  • Camera feed has consistent latency issues
  • Settings are often several menus deep

The Wyze app is a great looking counterpart to the popular budget security cameras.

Feeds are displayed in the home tab and controls are laid out plainly for easy use, though be warned that some settings are buried several menus deep.

The events section is a cleanly designed calendar. It’s useful since the app adds a healthy dose of automation controls for users to take or leave as they wish.

Automations are called ‘rules’, and are defined as customizable shortcuts, schedules, device triggers, and location triggers. Experimentation is required, but they help make devices work around the user’s needs.

Live viewing of cameras is temperamental, so expect some degree of delay when viewing real-time footage.

What others are saying… ’The price is hard to beat, but the app in particular does suffer from a notable bug and the v3’s image quality can look over sharpened and pixely even in HD. Again, can’t complain much for the price though.’  – NSULIN4ALL on App Store

4. Google Home App

  • Extremely minimal
  • Useful way to stay on top of all kinds of Google home products, for effective automation
  • Compatibility with third party devices is very hit-and-miss
  • Consistent latency issues

Google Home takes ‘less is more’ to its reasonable limit, so users might be a bit baffled when they first open the app to find two blank tabs–a home page and an events/suggestions page.

The minimal approach keeps things uncluttered and visually intuitive, syncing all Google products into one handy place. Tapping the + in the left corner gives options to add products.

Security cameras and doorbell cameras can be viewed from the Home tab, while detection events will be stacked alongside any other automation notifications in the events/suggestions tab.

As the reviews reveal, performance is hit-and-miss. What’s clear is that a strong internet connection is needed for the app to function fluidly.

What others are saying… ‘Was a bit disappointed before with performance of the app but the Google team has improved the app considerably. The app can handle things well now even under threat of bad connection, it steadily tries to retain control of smart devices or clearly states what the problem is. I’ve noticed it mostly depends on the capability of the device you’re depending on.’ –  Concept Five on Google Play Store.

Nest Cam is one of the most popular home security devices on the market. Find out our thoughts on it .

5. Reolink App

  • No sign-up required, allowing for a super fast setup
  • Simple layout is easy to get to grips with
  • Dull and dated design
  • Automation is half-baked

Aside from some superficial issues, the Reolink app works well and is user-friendly.

Camera feeds are presented under the ‘Camera’ tab at the top, which appears when the user opens the app. Beside that is a ‘Cloud’ tab, which makes accessing all cloud-stored footage a breeze.

This isn’t an app dedicated to smart homes in the way that Kasa Smart or Google Home is, but there is the option to add other devices on an IoT (internet of things) tab.

Perhaps the most unique feature is that Reolink doesn’t require a user account to be created to use any compatible products. Another win for the app is the superior quality settings , which allow for much greater customization than other apps.

What others are saying… ‘With an intuitive app, plenty of customization options, reasonable prices, and reliable equipment – all very crucial factors – we think that overall, Reolink is a great option to consider for home security.’ – Jaime Fraze for safehome.org .

Who has the best security camera app?

AlfredCamera has over 70 million downloads, making it by far the most popular dedicated security camera app for Android and iPhone. With the release of AlfredCam, a hardware security camera designed for use with the app, it is now also set to introduce users to a variety of security options for the home.

What app works with all security cameras?

There’s a number of ‘universal’ apps that claim to work with different brands of IP camera, but, as app store ratings will reveal, they are plagued with problems and known for being temperamental at best. Stick to brand-specific apps to avoid problems.

What is the best app for security cameras on iPhone/Android?

AlfredCamera has over 70 million downloads across iOS and Android devices. It has received two Google Play awards and is beloved among the community, making it among the best apps for security cameras on iPhone/Android. It’s also completely free to use even without buying a hardware security camera, so it’s super convenient compared to other security camera apps.

How can I watch my security cameras on my phone?

  • Download the camera’s dedicated app from the App Store or Google Play Store.
  • Sign up using a complex password
  • Add a device by tapping ‘add a camera’, and ‘+’ sign, or an equivalent button.

Need more information on how it works? Here’s how to connect a security camera to your phone .

How can I see all security cameras at once?

Most mobile apps do not support viewing multiple security camera feeds at once, including all the apps in the list above, though they will be ‘stacked’ in the main tab for the user to tap and load.

How do I connect my surveillance camera to my Android phone ?

Apps can be downloaded for Android from the Google Play Store, so open up the store and search for the surveillance camera brand. Download the app, sign up, and pair the device as instructed. Ensure that the surveillance camera in question supports Android devices, as some may not.

How much does Alfred app cost?

Alfred is free to download and use. For users that enjoy the app and want more, Premium is available for just $5.99 a month or $29.99 a year. Aside from providing an ad-free experience, it gives access to different AI-based features— find out more about them .

Allow us a humble brag. AlfredCamera has had over 70 million downloads since launch, built a solid and ever-growing community of Alfred users, and has received two Google Play Awards. Not bad for a free security app!

This is a terrible thing.

It’s cheap is the only good thing about it, that says it all really. When connected the video quality is disgraceful, it’s like going back 30 years. It’s impossible to connect in less than 5 minutes, push this button push that button, you feel like throwing it out the window. The software is not user friendly by any stretch, the instructions are feeble and unclear. I could go on and on condemning this piece of junk but I’ve given it more time just writing this. In a nut shell? DONT BUY IT!! You’ed be buying a time waster. As the lady on the news said years a ago “I ain’t got time for this sh@&$”

Doesn’t work

Hoping that it would be nice to have a dash cam that would work well, and I was sadly mistaken. First of all connecting the cam to your phone is nearly impossible. The video quality looks like a razor flip phone from 2006. The battery life is a joke, and will shut off every other time you use your car. Will constantly disconnect and won’t reconnect for no reason. Do not buy this. If you did, make sure to return it as soon as possible

Baby Dash Cam Works For Me

Not sure why everyone else has a problem with the Yada Camera and the App. I had no problem following the instructions and pairing my phone and camera via Wifi. I have the IPhone 11 Max Pro. The camera must be plugged into a USB port at all times via USB c. Someone mentioned in the reviews it won’t hold a charge. It isn’t meant to. Picture quality is fine.

ReoLink GO Solar Powered Camera Review

Aliza Vigderman

What We Like

  • Beautiful image: The 1080p HD camera quality and night vision were truly incredible. Our footage was clear and crisp each time we viewed our live feed.
  • Large storage: The ReoLink GO had multiple storage options, including an optional micro-SD card that held up to 64 GB of footage and the free ReoLink cloud with another 1 GB of footage. We never worried about storage space while using the ReoLink GO.
  • Durability: We don’t exaggerate when we tell you that the ReoLink GO is durable. It could withstand mild water pressure and function as if nothing happened. For outdoor use, this was a great feature.

What We Don't Like

  • No way to change to Wi-Fi: If our cabin happened to get fiber-optic Internet, there would be no way to switch over. The camera only worked on 4G LTE or 3G cellular networks.
  • Comparatively high price: Other solar panel powered cameras typically do not cost as much as the $259.99 ReoLink GO solar-powered camera. For example, the Ring Stick Up Cam Solar , a similar outdoor camera, costs $148.99, over $100 less. However, it requires Wi-Fi or cellular backup to function, unlike the GO.
  • No smart attachments: Though the app was great to view footage, there was no option to connect to any smart platforms, such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.

Here at Security.org, we like to frequent our cabin throughout the year. Security has always been a problem, though, since there is no Wi-Fi available up in the mountains. This last time we went up, we took the ReoLink GO solar-powered camera up for a test run, as it doesn’t require Wi-Fi. After all, if there is anything we value more than a good road trip, it is home security. In this review, we’ll go over what we experienced with the security camera–from purchase to testing and everything in between. Let’s dive in!

Is A Battery-Powered, 4G-Capable Camera For You?

Sure, not a lot of security camera brands offer battery-powered , 4G-capable security cameras, and for good reason: Not everyone needs such a sophisticated setup. If you’re looking for reliable security cameras for your home and you have Wi-Fi connection, consider splurging on these security camera brands rather than spending over $200 on the Reolink Go.

A Quick Overview

We understand that not everyone has ample time to read every word of our review. So, we have summarized what we liked best and what we thought could use some improvement about the ReoLink GO here.

What We Loved

  • Beautiful image : The 1080p HD camera quality and night vision were truly incredible. Our footage was clear and crisp each time we viewed our live feed.
  • Large storage : The ReoLink GO had multiple storage options, including an optional micro-SD card that held up to 64 GB of footage and the free ReoLink cloud with another 1 GB of footage. We never worried about storage space while using the ReoLink GO.
  • Durability : We don’t exaggerate when we tell you that the ReoLink GO is durable. It could withstand mild water pressure and function as if nothing happened. For outdoor use, this was a great feature.
  • User-friendly app : We loved viewing our camera’s live feed and using the two-way audio on the ReoLink app. We had no questions on how to use the application on either our iOS or Android devices.
  • No Wi-Fi needed : Our remote cabin had absolutely no Wi-Fi, so we thought having a security camera up there might be impossible. Not with the ReoLink GO, though! The camera was completely wireless and functioned without a Wi-Fi connection due to its SIM card, which we bought from T-Mobile.

What Wasn’t Great

  • No way to change to Wi-Fi : If our cabin happened to get fiber-optic Internet, there would be no way to switch over. The camera only worked on 4G LTE or 3G cellular networks.
  • Comparatively high price : Other solar panel powered cameras typically do not cost as much as the $259.99 ReoLink GO solar-powered camera. For example, the Ring Stick Up camera , a similar outdoor camera, costs $148.99, over $100 less. However, it requires Wi-Fi or cellular backup to function, unlike the GO.

There was much more to our experience with ReoLink GO’s solar panel camera than what we mentioned above, though. We filled our trip with fun and we had plenty of learning experiences along the way. With that being said, let’s take it from the beginning.

ReoLink Go Outside

Buying Our Camera

After we decided to take advantage of our cabin, we immediately hopped on the ReoLink website to make our purchase. It made us happy to see that the website was modern, aesthetically pleasing and easy to navigate. However, our mood dropped slightly when we saw that the ReoLink GO camera with a solar panel would cost us $259.99. Compared to other security cameras, this was a pretty high price. For example, the Blink XT2 cameras cost just $99.99 for one camera or $179.99 for two, while the Wyze Cam costs just $20. That’s a shame, although the ReoLink GO is unique in not requiring Wi-Fi, unlike the Blink and Wyze cameras. Plus, we appreciated that there were no additional shipping or installation fees. For us, this made the entire experience start off on a lighter foot.

ReoLink Go Solar Panel Outside

How It Worked

The camera itself was impressive in terms of both look and functionality. There were multiple features that fit our needs precisely. First and foremost, the camera offered 1080p HD vision, which was great for identifying objects in our unkempt outdoor area. As individuals with an irrational fear of creepy nightcrawlers, the 33-foot range night vision and the built-in siren really sold us. We adjusted the motion detection sensitivity between 13, 19, or 32 feet; there was also the option to turn the motion detection off completely, (hey, we get it; some people prefer denial) but that was a no-go for us scaredy cats. Overall, we felt secure knowing that the passive infrared motion sensor would not give us any false scares if a plastic bag were to blow across our lawn, as it had special detection for people and animals. Thanks, AI!

Installing Our Camera

Installing our camera was honestly not that bad. We know that self-installation can oftentimes be intimidating, but the ReoLink GO camera was easy and fun to set up! When the box arrived at our doorstep, we found the camera, an outdoor mount, rechargeable battery, reset needle, pack of screws, surveillance sign, mounting hole template, micro USB cable, quick start guide, solar panel and, of course, the camo skin. The camera also included an optional micro-SD card that held up to 64 GB of data, which is equivalent to 64 hours of continuous live viewing.

ReoLink Go Install

Our first instinctive move was to connect our camera to Wi-Fi, which did not work on multiple levels, mainly due to the lack of Wi-Fi at our cabin. Once we finished laughing at ourselves, we followed the proper online and paper directions and installed our T-Mobile SIM cards into the camera. We will admit that we were slightly overwhelmed at first given all of the pieces in the installation kit, but after a brief skim of the quick start guides, we felt ready to take on the task. We then decided where we wanted to set up our camera and got to work. The camera was very sturdy, and it surprised us that we could screw it in to just about anything. For us, we chose a tree facing the front of the cabin, with the main focus on the front door.

Battery Life

We didn’t have to touch our solar-powered camera throughout the rest of our trip and for long after that, no matter how many minutes of live viewing we indulged in. The near-constant sunshine beating down on the solar panel made for a non-stop power stream to the camera. We looked at our feed far too often, which is the main source of battery drainage, so this solar-power option allowed us to release some stress about running out of charge.

Audio and Video Capabilities

Speaking of which, we cannot finish this review without expressing how gorgeous the recorded footage was. Each time we viewed the footage, either on a livestream or playing it back for review, the crisp image that showed up impressed us every time. We also communicated with each other through the security camera and the mobile app in real-time through the built-in microphone and speaker, which was convenient when our coworker showed up unexpectedly when we were out on a hike one morning. We communicated where the key was located and how to access the cabin even though we were miles away.

We also checked on each other when going about our nightly outdoor activities, such as taking the trash out and making phone calls, without too much effort. One of our favorite features was recording our own alert messages that would play if there were any people or animal motion detected. We had plenty of fun trying to record the most menacing-sounding messages as possible, but definitely saw how it could be beneficial for more serious situations, like home invasions, as well. For example, we tested a message saying we protected our cabin with a camera and that we had alerted the cops, which we think would certainly send an intruder running.

Tip: It is a good idea to keep notifications and alerts on even if you are at home and having a quiet day in. While the alerts may be bothersome, they’re there to protect you when you need it most. Just because you are home does not mean burglars won’t strike. In fact, there was a household member present in roughly 1 million burglaries from 2003 to 2007. 1

Viewing the Recordings

We viewed and downloaded all recorded footage through our mobile phones and our laptops thanks to the ReoLink app. In Fluent mode, when the camera records in 720p HD as opposed to regular 1080p HD, seven users could live stream and view cloud storage simultaneously. Now, the footage of us tripping down the porch stairs with an entire grocery of food will always be available, which we have mixed feelings about.

ReoLink Go Cloud Storage online

We received push notifications and emails each time the camera picked up motion from an animal or person. We also appreciated the option to schedule notifications. For example, we turned our notifications off when we sat on our front porch reading each morning. Not once did we feel that we might miss something that was occurring outside our cabin.

The micro-SD card held a surprising amount of footage. The camera supported micro-SD cards of up to 64 GB and could save 3,000 motion clips or 1,500 motion events at most. While we only used 16 GB micro-SD cards, there was plenty of storage for our needs. We did not have to override or delete any of our videos over the course of the entire week. One hour of live feed ended up to be the equivalent of 1 GB of data when viewing in 1080p HD, which was more than adequate for us.

We could have stored our encrypted footage in their free cloud server for seven days. In fact, we even had the option to upgrade our cloud storage to 30-day storage with multiple different cameras for just $3.49 per month, but it wasn’t what we needed on our trip this time.

On the third night at the cabin, we faced a fairly extreme rain and thunderstorm. Thankfully, the Reolink GO camera had weatherproof features and an IP rating of 65, meaning it offered complete protection from entry of dust and low-pressure water jets. Harsh conditions or freezing temperatures also didn’t affect the camera, which was good because we’re on the East Coast, which has all kinds of weather throughout the year.

Tip: Once we slid on the ReoLink GO’s camo skin, the camera became nearly impossible to notice. However, if you’re worried about burglaries or home invasions, you may want to skip the camo skin. 60% of burglars say they look to see if a home has an alarm system before deciding whether or not to break in, and 40% said if they find a system, that deters them from moving forward with the burglary. 2 Therefore, proudly displaying your system via a security sign or visible camera may actually save you in the long run.

Video Review

Want to see that 1080p HD video and infrared night vision in practice? We tested out this outdoor camera from our home so you have an idea of the type of footage you’ll get.

Using the App

The ReoLink app worked exceptionally well for us on both our iOS and Android devices. It was incredibly easy to navigate and customize notifications to precisely what we needed. For us and our one ReoLink GO camera, we mainly used the app to test notifications, view our live feed, and communicate using the two-way audio. We genuinely agree with the high ratings in both the Google Play store (4.1 stars out of 5) and the Apple store (3.5 out of 5).

ReoLink Go App - Senitivity

Getting Support

Overall, setting up the camera and getting everything working was a pretty simple process, which was surprising since we are not the most skilled engineers that exist. We could attribute our success almost entirely to ReoLink’s handy website, which offered detailed tutorials, troubleshooting guides, and a lengthy list of frequently asked questions. Each time we needed assistance with one thing or another, these were the first places we visited.

ReoLink Support

We have to admit, though, that we do wish there were live agents to help us out a few times there. ReoLink had no chat on its website and no phone number to contact customer support. If we needed personal assistance, we could only get it through email. We reached out to the ReoLink customer support team once on our trip before the storm hit our cabin to make sure our camera would be okay. We received the clear in a few hours, but by that time, the rain had already started. It would have been nice to know that we could get help quickly if we really needed it.

Final Thoughts

So there you have it. All you need to know, and more, about the ReoLink GO solar panel security camera. For us, the camera’s higher price was definitely worth it for all of the great features, including the app, the extended battery life, the seemingly bottomless storage, the ability to function without Wi-Fi connection, and, of course, that crisp image. The solar panel was especially a game-changer, making it so we would never have to touch our camera ever again if we didn’t want to; it remained charged 24/7.

At the end of the day, the ReoLink GO made the perfect safety addition to our getaway cabin in the woods. We could place the camera wherever we pleased because of the completely wireless setup. With reliable notifications, the ability to view live footage, and non-stop solar power, we felt confident that our camera would do an exceptional job watching over our space when we weren’t there without blowing up our phones with notifications. We do have to admit, though, that we turn on our notifications occasionally to see high-quality images of animals inspecting our yard. Overall, we felt safe and secure knowing we had the ReoLink GO with us–and nothing is more important than that.

Security Camera Apps: A Guide To Popular Professional & DIY Solutions

Published 03/23/2020 by General Security

Security cameras help safeguard your loved ones, home, office, and property from intruders. Associated mobile apps provide 24/7 monitoring, with real-time updates and access to a wide range of features. These include:

  • Immediate Activity Alerts
  • Motion Detection
  • Daily Event Logs
  • Real-Time Data

Such tech can also provide much-needed peace of mind to users concerned with elder loved ones who may be isolated and away from family support systems during crises—such as the recent Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. Besides wellness checks, some cameras and apps provide two-way audio.

Since there are countless security camera apps available, we decided to break down some of the most popular for you, to help in your decision-making process. Nearly all security cameras can be categorized into Professionally Installed or Do-It-Yourself (DIY) models. The majority of associated mobile and smartphone applications consist of Proprietary or Third-Party brands—those designed to work with specific equipment, or interchangeable, respectively.

Since there are countless security camera apps available, we decided to break down some of the most popular for you.

Many also carry the tag “Powered by Alarm.com.” This denotes tech and services provided by professionals, such as General Security. Alarm.com service providers ensure your cameras and corresponding apps are synced to work together . Renowned as a mark of excellence, Alarm.com was recognized at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) with its prestigious Security Product of the Year award.

This useful guide lists many of the most popular Professional and DIY security camera apps available today, outlines pros and cons, shares customer reviews from Google Play and the Apple App Store , and much more.

Arlo is focused on basic home security rather than smart home components—a plus if that’s your primary focus—though it does offer features such as live video streaming, DVR clips, and easy system arm and disarm capabilities. The Arlo Smart and Rich notification system has real-time alerts during mobile device lock mode, another advantage.

What Users Say

Google Play

“ Works very well most of the time. Captured video and camera viewing is available anywhere. Modes and rules are very flexible for activating motion detection and notifications from cameras. Updates often cause problems and I've had to uninstall and reinstall the app on a couple of occasions to get it to function properly after an update.” —Zoltan Ori **** “ Delay between activity and start of recording causes things to get missed sometimes. So far this hasn't been critical, mostly animals. But if a break-in happens those few seconds could mean the difference of catching a clear view of the intruder.” —Gary Jacobsen *** iOS App Store

“ This is a great compl[e]ment to an online security system. When an intruder breached our security system during a burglary, my five Arlo cameras turned on “Notification” to my iPhone and recorded the two burglary people. I immediately phoned the police (we were 600 miles away on vacation) and sent them the Arlo video clips. I also had the videos posted on several Facebook sites in the local area. Within 6 hours we had the names and addresses of the perps and sent the info to the local police. When the police phoned the burglars with the good news, the kids turned themselves and the stolen goods into the police station.” —Buck&Chuck *****

The only issue I have with it is when my camera  picks up the motion detection, it takes my video a few minutes to load before I can view it. But other than that I really enjoy arlo!” —kels p. ****

“Great App, it works well[.] I can arm and unarm the alarm from anywhere. It also sends me notification when it's turned on or off. Most times if it[‘]s not working, it[‘]s because it needs to be updated.” — Tameca Johnson *****

“System does not work at all with my phone app, always tells me there are open sensors when there are none. Tells me the system is offline and can not connect to the internet. I've tried reloading the app numerous times but that did nothing to fix the problem. Still unable to arm/disarm my house with my phone app.”

— Michael Bishop *

iOS App Store

“I mainly use the app to arm and disarm and to connect with my indoor camera. I have been impressed so far with the speed of the protect America app in terms of interacting with my system. There was a substantial lag with my old previous provider that made using my camera pointless at times.” — Excint *****

“I use complicated passwords that iPhone allows me to input from keychain or my password app. However the last update does not integrate with either (no option to use them) and I can’t even paste into the field from another app. I guess they’re also force password updates without telling people because I couldn’t log in until I reset it online.” — Trik_sea **

It’s also compatible with third-party devices, such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Nest.

“ The app works a[s] described. It is very easy to use and makes it very conven[ien]t to turn on/off our system and see any camera alerts. I found that it is easier to use the app to modify or customize some of the features using the app that is also available when using it on windows computers.” —Eliot Persell ***** “This app has always been slow and at times completely unresponsive, but lately it has a new issue. When I open it, it shows an error message saying it can't contact the base and offers to either 'cancel' or 'retry'. I have to press anywhere outside the error message box to get it to go away. After that the app shows the correct info/status.” — Sam Owens *

“This app and the system does everything I need it to do. Almost. Having come from an electronics background and being very familiar with security system[s], SS has done an excellent job in making it simple and reliable.” — Tommy NCL *****

“I am having serious issues with the SimpliSafe app since I upgraded my System. Although my camera is installed, the app is saying it is not; and, I keep getting kicked   out of it. I hope whatever is going on can be resolved soon.”

“ The last update made the app freeze and the camera fail. It took several attempts to add it back and get it working right, but it still won't scan the qr code on the device anymore. After updating today, It won't scan and refuses to connect with wi-fi or data. Update: 1/24 got it working now, turned up brightness on phone screen to scan. Like new app features.” — Linda Hansen **** “Notifications have never been prompt, but since the last update they are hours delayed at times. No matter how close to the router the camera is, streaming and playback is completely unusable in "clear" HD. 1 out of 4 cameras cease to function once the temperature reaches freezing point.” —Jon * iOS App Store “I have had this app and cameras for over two years and they haven’t failed me. So much so I upgraded and got the New 4k wired system. Wired or wireless cameras the app works great with. No problem with playback or any of the features the app has.” — Something Nice! ***** “ This app is decent but it’s really not great. I initially liked it a lot but the settings never seem to match what is happening on my app. I have it set to record for 2 mins after a motion triggers yet it records 30 seconds...this app has potential but there are definitely some things that need to be fixed first.” — No longer a fan 12345 **

“EDIT: Since I last posted. The app has been working better. I can arm and disarm the alarm from my phone. The only issue I have is with user setup. The panel and app seem to be at odds with each other. I set up 3 users on the panel but they don't register on the app. I figure this will get sorted in short order. Cove seems very on top of things.” — Sanctuary 6284 *** “ I cannot login to the app. I have double checked my username and password, but I keep getting a message that either the username or password is incorrect. While the system itself seems good, it's not going to be too helpful if I'm unable to arm and disarm it from the app because it won't let me login. — Liz Mihalov * iOS App Store

The Cove system seems like a pretty decent home security choice with a company that backs up their product. The app works pretty good, but it is a little buggy at times and I find that it works better on my iPad than my iPhone, which isn’t really what you want. —Patrickster *** “Can’t even sign into the app, it asks for a user name but I was never able to create one. I went on my PC and logged in and saw what it said my user name was so I tried that in the app and still no good...once I get the app nailed down all will be good.” — Jb11228 *

Best Road Trip Camera Gear

Here are the cameras and gear to step up your photo and video game.

Memories are priceless. And having the best camera to capture life's moments can make a huge difference. When you're venturing out for a quiet weekend getaway, planning a once-in-a-lifetime international trip or heading off on an  epic drive across the US , having a durable, easy-to-use camera that can deliver quality shots is a must-have. A proper camera won't just give the best videos and photos and videos -- it's ensure you'll have a collection of memories that'll stand the test of time. And if you're looking to level-up your vacation videos, the best camera can bring amazing slow-motion footage to life. Most importantly, the right camera will remain protected from wild waters and whatever other rugged adventures come your way. This all sounds like a lot, but there are a variety of affordable high-end cameras on the market. You won't need to break the bank for something like this. And, more often than not, a simple GoPro can deliver the goods.

I travel a lot , and I bring more camera gear than usually need. That said, there are some gear I end up using all the time. Those devices are what I recommend here. One of them will probably be all you need for your next road trip.

Still the best action camera overall

Gopro hero 10 black.

You can't go wrong with a GoPro. They have excellent image quality, are quite rugged and their app is pretty solid in letting you edit your photos and footage to look its best. The main reason I'm recommending the Hero 10 over one of the less expensive options is because of the . This lens swaps in and records an even wider angle of view. Plus, it improves the already excellent stabilization.

I've been using it not only to capture scenic vistas, but also as a dash camera, as you can see in the video below.

The newer has a few improvements, but for most people the Hero 10 will look pretty much the same and will save you some money.

Best 360 camera

Insta360 one x3.

I've used 360 cameras for years. They've come a long way. This is the first I'd consider using without a backup action camera. 360 cameras capture everything in a sphere around the camera. Later, with the app, you can pick and choose what to show and how. So basically you record everything, and then crop to show just the interesting parts.

One of the coolest tricks a 360 camera can do is automatically remove the selfie stick, so it looks like you have a drone following you. For more, check out:

The Insta360 X3 along with its app in front of the Eiffel Tower.

Best tiny camera

Insta360 go 2.

This is a unique and tiny action camera that I've been using a lot. It's not really a main camera, but definitely an excellent secondary camera. It's about the size of your thumb -- and magnetic. You can hang it on your shirt while wearing an included magnetic pendant, or attach it to anything metal, or use one of the myriad clever mounts. The case that recharges and controls the camera even has a built-in tripod. The footage is wonderfully stabilized and looks far better than you'd expect for something so small.

Because of its size, it can record perspectives other cameras can't, like the model train POV in the video below.

insta360-go-2

Ultimate action camera

Gopro hero 11 black.

For most people the GoPro Hero 10 Black is all the action camera they'll need. If you don't mind spending a bit more, the newer Hero 11 improves on the 10 in a few minor ways. For one, there's a new image sensor. The primary difference is it's more square. So if you often post vertical content for, say, TikTok or Instagram, but still want to be able to post standard horizontal content to YouTube, this allows you to more easily do both without a significant loss in quality.

You can read more about it here:

Best gimbal

If you don't want to invest in a new camera or don't want the bulk of one (fair), consider a gimbal. You can really improve the quality of your videos with a gimbal. They smooth out your hand's movements while you're walking around, and can do slick, professional-looking pans and tilts. They're an absolute must-have if you're primarily using your phone. I have the OM 3, but the 5 is the current model and is easier to connect to your phone.

dji-om5-reviewthumb2

Portable hard drive

Sandisk 1tb extreme portable ssd.

If you're recording a lot of video, your camera and phone's storage are going to fill up fast. Cloud storage is one option, but if you're bringing a laptop, consider a tiny portable hard drive. I have one of these and they seem impossibly small for how much they can store. They're also reasonably rugged.

A hand holds the pocket-sized SanDisk Extreme portable 2TB SSD.

Selfie stick

I don't have a strong recommendation for this one, other than to say selfie sticks are great (when you're not in crowds, that is) and you should find one you like. Even I, who has what one friend describes as "freakishly long arms," find great use in a selfie stick. They let me capture photos and videos that would be impossible any other way, especially with a 360 camera that automatically deletes the stick from the final image or video.

Precariously perched over the Badlands, thanks to a 360 camera and a selfie stick.

Precariously perched over the Badlands, thanks to a 360 camera and a selfie stick.

I recommend getting one with tripod-mount screws on both ends, which gives you more options on what you can mount and how you can mount the stick itself. Similarly, make sure you get one that can hold all your cameras and phones.

Camera remote

I find these to be super handy, though depending on how you're recording, it might not be. It's a simple Bluetooth remote that lets you control when the camera starts and stops recording along with changing modes, settings, and so on. True, you can use the camera's app on your phone instead, but I feel like I spend half my life trying to get cameras to connect to their apps, so  sometimes  a remote is easier. Sometimes the remote won't connect either. It's a hassle either way. Oh well.

joby gorillapod

Tripods and other mounts

One last thing. Tripods and mounts. You probably don't need a full-size tripod, few people do. A small bendable model can be super handy though, letting you mount the camera to just about anything and get a great shot with you in it. I've had good luck with Joby GorillaPods.  I have an older version of this one .

Also check out suction-cup and dash mounts . I have a tiny dashboard and tiny windshield, so it was a lot harder to find something that worked. So what I'm using probably won't work for you. Generally I'd recommend mounting the camera as high as possible, if you can, for a better view.

I'll end with my favorite, an antenna mount. Unscrew your antenna and install this mount. When paired with a 360 camera, it lets you get an exciting and unique view of your adventure. I got one of these and put a selfie stick on top of it, plus a 360 camera, to get the drone-like footage of me and my car in Grand Teton National Park . How well this works is going to depend on your particular vehicle, however.

The Best Dash Cam Apps To Use

road trip 720p security camera app

Our content is funded in part by commercial partnerships, at no extra cost to you and without impact to our editorial impartiality. Click to Learn More

The best dash cam app will be able to loop record , use a collision detection sensor (called a G sensor), and use a phone's GPS ability to track location . It will be easy to use , shoot high quality video , and offer a simple ways to export files , whether by USB, uploading to Google Drive or Dropbox, or automatically uploading to cloud storage.

We've combed through the top dash cam apps for iPhone and Android to determine which are the best. Our criteria centered around three main areas: how well the basic dash cam app features were executed; what additional perks, if any, were included in the app; and the quality of user feedback included in each app's reviews.

We've determined Nexar AI is the best dash cam app for iPhone – it offers great basic abilities, impressive machine learning-powered features, and an automated cloud backup that makes it easy to save your videos instantly.

AutoBoy is the best dash cam app for Android – it includes granular settings, and reliably records even while running in the background of a phone.

It should be noted that compared to a dedicated dashboard camera, getting a dash cam app is not usually the best choice: reliability  and  convenience in particular will suffer. But for personal use only, a dash cam app can be a short term substitute or low budget alternative.

Read on to see all our dash cam reviews and advice.

When not to use a dash cam app, frequently asked questions.

road trip 720p security camera app

Best Dash Cam Apps for iPhone

Have an iPhone or iPad? Then you're probably looking for an iPhone dash cam app. Here are the best options available on the App Store right now.

  • Nexar AI Dashcam App   – Best for features
  • Smart Dash Cam App – Best for flexible settings
  • Car Camera DVR. Pro App – Best for video data

Nexar AI Dash Cam App

With a total of 500 million miles recorded behind the wheel, the Nexar dash cam app comes with a large fanbase – and for good reason. This free app offers a lot of the perks you'd expect from a physical dash cam – as well as recording your drives, it even uses machine learning to automatically sense important driving events, such as hard brakes and even collisions. These events are instantly saved to your phone, including GPS location tracking, and are also auto-backed up to the user's private Nexar cloud.

The app also offers a unique feature: a “1-Click Report” template that lets you quickly fill out a detailed summary needed for an insurance claim, covering the place, time, impact, and video footage involved in the incident.

There are a few catches, though. For one thing, the app will try hard to upsell you on one of several official Nexar dash cameras, which will pair with the Nexar app to offer high-quality video and additional features (the cams also start at $180, and the app works fine without them). This upselling could arguably be considered a benefit, since it makes it easy for users to upgrade.

Also, Nexar has been dinged in the past for selling its users' data . And like any dash cam app, it'll drain your phone's battery, so you'd be wise to keep your phone charging at all times while using it. That said, the app is regularly updated, and recently added a ‘Battery Optimization' toggle switch to save battery by disabling local streaming and auto recording.

What's new for Nexar AI?

August 2023: New ‘Battery Optimization' switch, better ‘ride start' detection mechanism, enhanced drive summary.

IPCamSoft.com Smart Dash Cam App

IPCamSoft.com's Smart Dash Cam app makes a strong case as the top dash cam app for iPhone. It offers both manual and auto-recording modes, lets the user set their preferred resolution (up to 720p HD), can record audio, displays the time and speed of a vehicle in its videos, and auto-records a locked video file if it detects a collision. If it hasn't locked a video, it'll use continuous loop recording with a time range of up to 60 minutes, which overrides the oldest videos in order to make room for new ones.

You'll be able to play music on your phone even while the app is recording – which isn't always a guarantee in the world of dash cam apps – and you can choose which video files to delete if you need to free up phone space after an uneventful trip. You have two options for how the app uses your phone's storage: you can set a max capacity that the app won't go over, or you can just allow it to use all the available space on your phone before it starts writing over the oldest files. Recorded videos can also be uploaded to the cloud via Google Drive, YouTube, or Dropbox, and individual files can be sent to an email address. And on top of all that, four languages are supported: English, Spanish, French, and German.

Some reviewers have noted choppy video quality, and you'll see some advertisements – but, hey, you can't have everything.

What's new for IPCamSoft.com?

August 2023: General bug fixes, improved camera save feature.

  • Flexible settings
  • Lots of local and cloud storage options

  • Video quality can be shaky

Car Camera DVR. Pro App

This app also records at four resolutions – 480p, 720p, 1080p, and the recently added 4K – although which resolution is used will depend on your device. It can also record up to 60 FPS, so should be able to capture all the detail you need. Users can also set the length of each video file, and the number of files allowed in a loop before the app begins writing over the oldest ones.

One standout feature of the Car Camera DVR. Pro is its data overlay, which is embedded into the video files it produces. This allows you to see the time, vehicle speed, coordinates, and heading for every saved video. This in turn makes the video footage more valuable, since it's easy to prove how fast you were travelling and on which road, should you receive an erroneous speeding ticket or want to show you are not at fault in an insurance claim. Videos can be played back within the app, or can be exported to the iPhone's video gallery with the touch of a button.

The app supports 12 languages (English, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, and Spanish), and costs $12.99. While the feature set isn't as wide as some of the free apps on this list, the Car Camera DVR. Pro is undeniably a great app for what counts: recording and saving data-rich video files when you need them.

Price: $12.99

August 2023: Added iOS16 lock screen widget, optimized to support HD video up to 4K on iPhone 7 and later devices.

Best Dash Cam Apps for Android

Looking for an Android dash cam app? Here are the best options currently available on the Google Play Store.

  • AutoBoy Dash Cam App – Best for running in the background
  • DailyRoads Voyager App – Best for automation
  • Drive Recorder Dash Cam App – Best for simplicity
  • KM Car Camcorder – Best for avoiding ads
  • Dashcam 9 App – Best for recording front and rear simultaneously

AutoBoy Dash Cam App

The AutoBoy app brings plenty of granular features with it, making it particularly appealing to tech nerds. However, it also offers another perk that will make it a popular dash cam app for many: it can record in the background, while the phone is being used for browsing the internet or other apps.

The AutoBoy's recording functionality will loop files, auto-deleting the oldest file once it reaches the maximum allowed storage space. Users can choose their preferred recording cycles, maximum storage, and video quality, including resolution, encoder, frame rate, bit rate, and audio quality. GPS functionality is included, as is a smart crash sensor, which locks the current video file when it detects a collision. You'll know whether the dash cam is recording or not – it triggers an LED backlight that flickers when it records in the background.

The camera's in-app functions are more versatile than most dash cam apps: it can zoom, focus, flash, and display grid lines, as well as offering a scene mode option. The app supports 12 languages – Korean, English, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, German, Spanish, Dutch, Turkish, Italian, Vietnamese, and Thai. Reviews have noted a few issues with crashing and freezing, but if you're just leaving it undisturbed in the background, it should run perfectly fine. This app is a good option for anyone who wants to use their phone to play music or podcasts, while on a trip that they also need to film.

What's new for AutoBoy?

August 2023: General bug fixes – no major updates since June 2022.

Autoboy Dash Cam App logo

  • Runs in the background
  • Granular video quality settings
  • May crash or freeze on occasion

AutoBoy dash cam app video files

DailyRoads Voyager App

Like most dash cam apps, DailyRoads Voyager offers continuous looped video recording, letting users set the length and video quality for each file, as well as toggle the audio on or off. You can quickly save interesting video files by tapping the screen once.

Shock sensors can auto-lock the current video file when they detect a collision, while a time-lapse photography mode is also available. All video files are timestamped and geotagged with GPS functionality, though the GPS can be disabled to save power, and the files can be set to display vehicle speed and elevation as well. Like AutoBoy, DailyRoads Voyager also comes with a background mode that frees up the phone it runs on.

One cool perk that not every dash cam can handle: the Voyager app can be set to automatically start up and shut down with the car, as long as it is connected to the car deck. Other features include overheating protection, brightness adjustment, a built-in file manager, and the ability to upload files to DailyRoads.com.

The Voyager app comes with in-app advertisements that might bother some, but ultimately, it's a serviceable app that does what a dash cam app should. The fact that it connects to a car desk in order to power on or off alongside the vehicle itself makes it a great pick for a driver who enjoys automating repetitive tasks. If you're willing to pay $4.99, you can get a second app, Voyager Pro, which comes with no ads, auto-starts, and uploads to Google Drive.

What's new for DailyRoads Voyager?

August 2023: Fixed bug related to speed recording.

DailyRoads Dash Cam App logo

  • Can automatically start up/shut down with the vehicle
  • Video files are timestamped and geotagged
  • Runs advertisements

Drive Recorder Dash Cam App

The Drive Recorder app includes plenty of great features. It records in the background, and can be set to auto-record as soon as the app is launched; it supports multiple video resolutions and file sizes; it can share the video to your phone's cloud drive; it can record the driving trajectory; and it can navigate to the last location in the video. You'll also be able to edit videos within the app's editing function, so you can drag and drop to determine the exact length of time that's most relevant to keep as its own clip.

Video files include timestamps and GPS location tracking when played back. Your Android OS should be 4.0 or higher for it to all work.

The Drive Recorder app is simple, although it once again comes with advertisements. It should be an easy option for a dash cam app, and is best for those who would just be confused or distracted by any unneeded bells and whistles.

What's new for Drive Recorder?

August 2023: Video editing function is now built in; A reminder now warns the driver if they are driving too fast.

Drive Recorder Logo

  • Records in the background
  • Auto-records at launch
  • Run advertisements

Drive Recorder dash cam app menu

KM Car Camcorder

The KM Car Camcorder dash cam app uses loop recording, with options that let you pick the right file quantity and the maximum size of the storage folder before the oldest files begin being overwritten. You'll be able to see the timestamp and vehicle speed in your video files, and see the time, date, speed, and location of each video file from your folder.

The app will record video in the background, allowing you to use a navigation app or play music while it's running. It can record from the front or selfie cams on your phone, allowing you to film the exterior and the road ahead, or the interior to keep an eye on your passengers.

It also includes a collision detection sensor, which will automatically lock the current video file when it senses a collision. Video files can be shared via Bluetooth or Google Drive. The app hasn't been updated since 2021, however, so its software may be buggy or not secure enough.

One big pro: while this app does include advertisements, you can get rid of them without paying for anything. Just go to settings and toggle the “hide advertising” button for an ad-free experience on your free, just-the-basics dash cam app.

What's new for KM Car Camcorder?

August 2023: Nothing is new! This app hasn't been updated since October 2021, putting it at a risk for buggy or insecure software, particularly if your phone uses a more recently updated software.

  • Easy to use
  • Ads can be hidden
  • Detects collisions

Dashcam 9 App

Vault Micro, Inc.'s Dashcam 9 is named after the nine special features it offers, although the final one – a “screen off” mode – has yet to be added in an update.

Many of the other features should be pretty familiar to the dash cam app aficionado. Speed, location, and time are overlaid in each video file; files can be saved in either internal or external memory, with automatic file deletion when the predetermined storage space is exceeded; map data is offered via GPX. Also, an event data recorder (EDR) function will automatically create a video file when it detects a collision, starting five seconds before an accident and continuing for five seconds afterwards.

One big benefit of the app that's not always common with dash cam apps is the option to add an external camera. You'll be able to use a physical camera within the app's interface, which allows you to simultaneously record both front and rear video, with your phone's camera filming the front and the additional physical camera (connected by a long cord) filming the road to the rear of the vehicle. Granted, you'll need to buy a physical dash cam for this get-up to work – we've listed the top dash cam options over here. Front and rear footage can be saved to the same file simultaneously, with the rear footage nestled inside the front video screen.

The app is free, monetized by advertisements. Even if you don't want to add another camera, this app runs in the background and offers detailed settings, so it functions well as a single front-facing dash cam app.

What's new for Dashcam 9?

August 2023: This app hasn't been updated since April 2020, an indication that its software won't provide the same data security as other apps on this list. We've moved it from the third best Android app to fifth best due to this discrepancy.

Dashcam 9 logo

  • Saves files to either internal or external memory
  • Supports a secondary physical camera

Dashcam 9 app driving record

The best free iPhone dash cam app is the Nexar AI app , thanks to its ease of use, extra machine learning abilities, and automatic cloud backup feature. The best free Android app is the AutoBoy dash cam app , due to its detailed video settings, ability to run in the background, and reliable video file recording.

As you can see above, most dash cam apps are free, or come with a free version. The catch is that they either run annoying advertisements, or save the best features for a paid upgrade. Neither option is ideal, as you won't want to be faced with an ad when trying to save a video after a hit and run, and you don't want to have to pay for a premium plan just to download the one dash cam video you need.

To be honest, though, if you're going to pay money for a dash cam, you likely won't want to settle for an app at all. If you need a professional dash cam, you'll probably want a high-quality option, and for that, you'll need a physical dash camera unit. If you're looking for dash cams for a fleet of five or more vehicles, you can find the right dash cam for your business here .

Dash cam apps are great because of the convenience they offer, and how little they cost – but they're not for everyone. Here are a few situations to consider that have kept the pros opting for a physical, dedicated dash camera unit every time.

Long-distance travel

Are you making grueling trips regularly? If so, you'll likely run out of storage on your phone fairly quickly. One dash cam app developer estimates you should always have 20GB of storage on your phone, but even that will likely just last a few hours.

Any dash cam app worth its salt will use looped recording, meaning it will start writing over old video files once it has reached the maximum storage space on your phone. However, this means that by the time you get to the end of your trip, you'll have lost the footage from the beginning of it, which kind of defeats the purpose of documenting it in the first place.

A physical dash camera, however, often supports 40 to 100 hours of storage space, depending on the size of the micro SD card you use with it.

Do you use your phone regularly? If you're using it for a dash cam app, you won't have access to it for long stretches of time while your vehicle is in motion. And even if you're fine with the lack of access, you'll still need to launch an app and set up your phone in its mount every single time you drive somewhere. The one time you don't bother could be the one time you really wish you had! By contrast, a physical dash cam is set up once, and stays there forever.

Front and rear views

Certain dash cams come as two units, with the smaller one located in the back of the vehicle to record the road behind for total coverage. You can't do that with your phone, naturally, and this extra security makes the physical option worth paying for. View our guide to the best front and rear dash cams .

Dual camera views

Other dash cams are called “dual” dash cams because they include two lenses in the same unit, shooting footage of the road in front and the interior of the vehicle, including driver and passengers. While many dash cam apps allow you to film with the selfie cam on your phone for a similar effect, none of them support filming with both cameras simultaneously. If you need to keep an eye on the road and your passengers – Uber drivers and tow trucks are two such jobs – you won't be able to use a dash cam app. We've rounded up the best dual dash cams .

In short, if you operate vehicles in any sort of professional environment, you won't be able to rely on an app. Dash cams are worth the investment, and we've assembled a comprehensive look at all the factors to consider in our Tech.co guide to dash cam costs . The bottom line? The best dash cams for truckers start at around $50.

To get a more robust and professional solution than a dash cam app, you'll want to compare the top dash cam vendors' products and prices for your specific needs. Find the best dash cam deals for trucks today, and upgrade your fleet, using Tech.co's dash cam comparison tool .

We love road trips! Planning them can be fun but, let's be honest, also stressful. The right road trip planner apps can take some of that stress away by helping you plan, organize, and manage travel before and during your trip. We've researched and tested these apps to help give you peace of mind so that you can spend more time enjoying your trip.

The Ultimate Map App for Planning Your Route: Roadtrippers

Access to free and convenient travel guides.

Share-ability so friends can join in on the planning process and suggest places to visit.

The app can use up the battery life of your device quickly. Take a car USB charger with you.

Built for travelers, Roadtrippers helps you create your route while allowing you to discover great places as you plan it out. Add a new place to your itinerary to work it into your trip.

The app features an easy-to-use interface. In addition to covering the U.S., it also covers Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Automate Your Trip Planning and Organization: Google Travel

Automatic trip organization via Gmail integration.

Offline access so you can see your trip information even when you don't have an internet connection.

Limitations with customizing some day trips exactly the way you want.

You can count on Google to make your trip planning a breeze. Pre-constructed day plans are available for hundreds of the world's most popular destinations, which you can customize to your liking.

It's one of the most versatile travel planner apps out there, giving you one convenient place to see your hotel, rental car, and restaurant bookings.

Find and Book a Last-Minute Place to Stay: Hotels.com

A fast, easy-to-use booking feature.

For every 10 nights you book through Hotels.com, you get one night free, provided it's the average daily rate of those 10 nights.

No option to easily cancel if you change your mind.

Whether your road trip itinerary changed, or you haven't decided on a place to stay yet, Hotels.com can help you find a place and book it when you're on the go, even when it's super last-minute. You can sort and filter hotels, see the amenities they have to offer, compare prices, and catch a glimpse of how many rooms are available.

This is the app you'll want to have handy if you want to see in-depth hotel details at a glance and need to find a place to crash ASAP without breaking the bank.

Find Local Restaurants, Read Reviews, and Make Reservations: OpenTable

Lots of great filter options and suggestions.

Access to gorgeous, high-quality images of menu items and informative reviews from other users.

Reported problems and inconveniences with their built-in reward system.

Searching for specific restaurants is more difficult than simply looking at what's around in the area.

Deciding on a place to eat in a new area is quick and hassle-free with OpenTable. See what's nearby, filter restaurants by cuisine, see photos of what's on the menu, make reservations, and get personalized recommendations based on your preferences.

OpenTable is known to be one of the top  location-based food apps  available, so you know you can trust its information when you're dying for something to eat.

Navigate Like a Local: Waze

Hands-free navigation with voice commands.

Alerts-only mode for road hazards and police.

Share up-to-date ETA with friends.

Spotify and Apple Music widgets get in the way.

Cluttered maps can be confusing.

Higher battery usage than Google Maps.

Waze  is a community-driven travel app that shows you the shortest possible route to your destination. Like Google Maps, Waze makes real-time adjustments for traffic jams and other obstacles—but Waze is often more accurate since it caters specifically to drivers.

The app syncs with your Google Calendar and can tell you when you should leave for appointments based on traffic. There's also a cool option to record your own voice and use it for directions .

Know Exactly When and Where to Make a Pit Stop: iExit Interstate Exit Guide

Access to detailed summaries of what's at the next exit (including gas prices at nearby gas stations).

Search for the next 100 exits from your location.

The app can only be used on major U.S. exit-based highways.

No offline access, so you'll use your data plan while you're on the road.

Making a pit stop for food, gas, or a bathroom break is easy when you have the iExit app. Using your device's GPS, the app offers helpful suggestions for when and where to stop based on your location along the highway.

Whether you're looking for well-known franchises like Starbucks and Walmart to convenient amenities like free Wi-Fi and truck or trailer parking, this app has you covered.

Find the Cheapest Fuel Nearby: GasBuddy

An in-app gas payment feature.

Opportunity to save 10 cents per gallon on your first fill-up and five cents per gallon on every fill-up after.

The app can take up a lot of data and battery life as it runs in the background.

GasBuddy is an app specifically designed to find nearby gas stations and save money on gas. Use it to find the cheapest gas in your area and filter gas stations by amenities like car washes, restaurants, and bathrooms.

It's the app you want to have if you're serious about finding the cheapest gas around. Information comes from users like you, so you have the most up-to-date prices.

Never Forget an Item: PackPoint Premium Packing List

Access to a built-in library of items to pack with the ability to add or remove items as needed.

An elegant, intuitive app interface.

Can't input multiple destinations for a single trip.

Not a free app.

PackPoint helps you make sure you have everything you need based on where you're going and what you're doing. In addition, the app takes into consideration the length of your trip and the expected weather conditions. Perhaps best of all, this app turns a mundane chore into something that's actually quite fun.

Find Out Where to Park and How Much It Will Cost: Inrix ParkMe

ParkMe is the only app that also includes street parking and parking meter rates where available, in addition to parking lots.

Real-time updates on available parking spots.

Rates and hours may be inaccurate in some areas.

ParkMe claims to be the world's largest and most accurate parking database. It allows you to purchase your parking spot through the app and compare prices across parking providers to help you save more money.

If you're road tripping around major cities in the U.S., Canada, or Europe, this app can be a huge help. You can even compare parking options and prices so that you always get the best deal.

Automatically creates itineraries from your inbox.

Widget displays trip details on your home screen.

Annoying amount of alerts by default.

If you're planning a trip, you'll likely have a lot of confirmation emails for hotels, appointments, restaurants, and attractions. TripIt syncs with your inbox and uses that information to compile an itinerary so that you don't have to scramble for it.

The free version is fine for road trips, but if you ever fly, the premium version gives you the option to upgrade seats and track reward miles.

In addition to your phone, laptop, and tablet, other travel tech essentials include chargers, headphones, travel adapters, cameras, luggage trackers, and off-grid communications

Yes. You can use Google Maps as a trip planner through the “Places” and “My Maps” features. Both the Google Maps website and app let you save locations to lists and get directions.
