Whether you are in South Africa for the full “Cape to Kruger” tour, or simply passing through Cape Town for a few days, the Baz Bus Peninsula Tour is an excellent day out .

Noordhoek Beach

If you’re riding the bus to your next hostel in Cape Town, you can book the tour with your driver; or make a reservation through your Cape Town Hostel; or by phoning the Bas Bus direct: +27 (0) 21 439 2323.

If you book the tour during your travels and are not sure of the exact date you want to go, don’t stress, just call the office a few days before you know you’ll be ready. I had booked the tour in October 2005, planning to go on it in December. But then I got to Coffee Bay and stayed there till January. It was no problem that I only took the tour four months after making my booking.

Hout Bay's Sentinel

My day of choice was a Saturday, which meant the bus was several people lighter, (potential tourers were “recovering” from a sudden onset of alcohol-induced flu). In total, we had around nine travellers, a tour guide and a driver, heading out to explore Cape Town’s gorgeous mountain peninsula chain by 9 a.m.

As we wound our way through Cape Town’s streets towards Hout Bay , our tour guide kept us entertained with lively commentary and amusing stories. We chugged past all the areas on the Atlantic Seaboard where the rich and famous live (Bantry Bay, Clifton, Camps Bay, Llandudno, etc.), the magnificent Twelve Apostle mountains forming the background.

Chapman's Tunnel

Once in Hout Bay an optional boat cruise to Seal Island was offered. (This is the only activity for which the fee is not included in the tour price.) About half decided to go, while the other half (I suspect the ones with a hangover) decided to head down towards the coffee shop and browse the curio markets – including, um, me . Those who went on the boat loved it – it was noisy and smelly and fantastic. The boat has an underwater camera so you can watch the seals frolic in the waves.

Penguin Mates

Our next stop – after driving from Hout Bay to Noordhoek via the spectacular Chapman’s Peak Drive (a mini-California Highway One, but steeper) – was one of the most popular places in Cape Town, Boulders Beach , part of the Table Mountain National Park – where swimmers and sightseers can get up close and personal with the local penguins.

Formerly known as Jackass Penguins (after the donkey-like sounds they make) they have recently been renamed African Penguins. This was my favorite part of the tour – you are so close to your new feathered friends that you can almost touch them, and they make great models for you camera.

  • BUT REMEMBER , these are wild animals that are not to be petted, fed, or taken home as souvenirs! Plus it’s said they also bite, so watch those fingers.

Penguin Duet

As everyone’s stomach began to rumble, we headed towards the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve , strapped on our helmets, and saddled up for a brisk bike ride down to Buffels Bay, a lovely, secluded beach, surrounded all the way by wildlife and fantastic, fynbos -scented scenery.

Lunch consisted of FRESH rolls, cold meats, cheese, chips, salad, water and fruit juice. Munching away you get a great view of the beach and sparkling sea. But look out for the baboons , they are not afraid and will try and take the food right out of your hands if they can. Feeding the baboons is strictly prohibited, as this behavior is not encouraged and can be dangerous to both the animals and people.

Baz Bikes

After the yummy lunch and a walk along the beach, you can take a quick dip if you want (the water temp can get as low as a very chilly 15 degrees C, or somewhere ’round there, so brace yourself). Then it’s time to head for Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope , the southwestern-most point of Africa, where it feels like you’re standing at the end of the Earth.

By the time we chugged on back to Cape Town and jumped off at the hostel (quite late in the afternoon), we were ready for a nice relaxing evening and a good dinner. Good friends were made, good fun was had and great scenery was explored.

Pretty Ride

Thanks to everyone for traveling with me on this epic Baz Bus tour! My Baz Blogging has now almost come to an end: next week I will give you a wrap up, remind you of some of the Baz basics , and let you know all the new things that have come into play.

Until then, keep trekkin’…

Baz Bus in Cape Town: The Best Way to See Cape Peninsula

Created by Barry Zeidel back in 1995, Baz Bus is South Africa’s most convenient hop-on-hop-off bus service and the best way to explore the country. During his travels around Europe as a backpacker, Barry was fascinated with the bus services for backpackers that allow easy access to various destinations. After he came back to Africa from his trip around Europe, he decided to do some research and start his own bus service for travelers who wish to explore South Africa at their own pace.

What is Baz Bus?

Baz Bus

Image:thegsa.co.za

Baz Bus operates between Johannesburg and Cape Town and stops in more than 40 towns and villages along the way. It also stops in front of over 180 hostels, making it a safe ride for backpackers who come to visit South Africa. Baz Bus sees over 10 000 travelers each year, making it one of the most popular options for getting around South Africa as a backpacker or an adventurous traveler. Whether you wish to visit places like Stellenbosch , Knysna, Natures Valley, and Plettenberg Bay or want to explore the streets of Durban, Storms River, Jeffreys Bay, and Chintsa, Baz Bus stops in all of these destinations. By using Baz Bus, you will also have an opportunity to meet many fellow travelers along the way.

In Cape Town, this fabulous bus service offers various tours including free daily city walking tours and free Table Mountain Guided Tours. However, the most popular Baz Bus tour in Cape Town is the Cape Peninsula Full Day Tour that includes a wide range of activities such as cycling in the nature reserve, visiting the penguin’s colony on Boulders Beach , a cruise to the Seal Island, and much more.

Tour review: Cape Peninsula day tour from Cape Town

July 25, 2016 By James Clark 7 Comments

Tour review: Cape Peninsula day tour from Cape Town

During my trip to Cape Town , the two day trips I had planned were for Robben Island and the Cape Peninsula. I didn’t realise that you could also do a safari from Cape Town in a day if you are pressed for time, but I have already been on a safari so that was not a consideration.

I had always assumed that Cape Town was at the very bottom of Africa at the Cape of Good Hope, but the cape is about 90km further south. Close enough to the bottom if you are looking at the whole map of Africa, but not so close that you can stroll out of your hotel to get to the bottom of the continent.

On my first day in Cape Town I met a Thai guy and a Korean guy at my hostel who asked if I wanted to go to the cape with them the next day. They were hiring a car so it would have been a cheap day out if we split the ride. It was forecast to be a rainy day and I still had two weeks to spare so I passed.

To get to the cape I took a tour. I picked Baz Bus , which is a popular backpacker tour bus in South Africa. Their main product is a hop-on hop-off bus service that travels along the coast and onwards to Johannesburg. They also have a Cape Peninsula day tour, which departs from Cape Town. I booked the tour at their head office in Cape Town, and they sell tickets in all the hostels.

The first stop on our trip was at Hout Bay where an optional part of the day included a boat trip to a nearby seal colony. The ocean was rough the day we were there and we were warned the boat wouldn’t be able to go all the way out.

I went anyway and as soon as we left I wished I had stayed onshore. Our boat was riding giant swells and slamming hard on the way down. On just this short trip I began to understand why sailors would fear passing by the cape. I was happy for the boat to return after realising that there would be no pleasure cruise today. Anyway, if you want to see seals you can see them sunning in the port, waiting for generous fishermen to throw them some lunch.

Seals

Driving south from Hout Bay the road climbs up a cliff face with amazing views of the coast. This is the view of Hout Bay.

Hout Bay Viewpoint

I booked this tour primarily to see the cape and enjoy the scenic drive. What I wasn’t expecting was the additional bonus of penguins. Our next stop was at Boulders Beach, where there is a colony of African penguins.

Boulders Beach is also part of the Table Mountain National Park , which covers Table Mountain (of course) in Cape Town, all the way to the Cape Peninsula, though not in a single contiguous area. Table Mountain is not included in the tour so it is something you should see in your own time (and going up the mountain is a must).

Penguins

The penguin colony is on the beach right next to the town. There are special walkways so people can’t go on the beach, otherwise you know people would do that. I know that you shouldn’t interfere with wildlife, but these little fellas are so cute that you just instinctively want to reach out and cuddle one, so I was grateful for the enclosed walkway, lest I create an international incident; “Australian tourist caught fondling wild penguins in South Africa.”

Penguins on the beach

Part of this tour includes a short bike ride component. The mini-bus had a bike trailer and once we got to the peninsula we were issued bikes and helmets to ride for part of the way down. There is not much traffic here and it is reasonably flat so it’s an easy ride. Riding along with the wind whistling through the spokes of my bike, it really felt like being at the end of the world.

Baz Bus biking

We had a picnic lunch at one of the tourist facilities and then it was on to the cape. Along the way we met a curious ostrich. I think he was interested more in his own reflection than with us.

Curious Ostrich

Before I visited South Africa I had assumed that the Cape of Good Hope was the most southerly point of Africa. If you are looking to stand at the very bottom of Africa then you are on the wrong tour. The most southerly point of Africa is at Cape Agulhas, which is about 150km away. Cape Point is the western edge of False Bay, so named because sailors would reach the eastern edge of the bay thinking they are now sailing up the coast of Africa, when in fact they have entered a large bay.

In this photo you can see Cape Point and the other side of False Bay.

Cape Point and False Bay

The park is filled with roaming baboons. They can be aggressive if they think you have food so be aware. Not that anyone would think a baboon is as cuddly as a penguin, but you do get occasional people who have never encountered a baboon or monkey and think it would be fun to feed them. Not a good idea.

Baboons

On our way to the Cape of Good Hope we saw another ostrich. As you can see the coast is wild and wind-swept, and looking like a sailors nightmare. So much of this coast reminded me of the west coast of Victoria in Australia. The Great Ocean Road and the Shipwreck Coast in Victoria has a very similar feel (just replace emu’s with ostrich’s). I love rugged coastlines like this so I was happy to be here.

Ocean ostrich

At the Cape of Good Hope there is the obligatory photo opportunity at the sign. After fighting off four bus loads of fellow tourists I got a few seconds to get my photo.

James at Cape of Good Hope

Another thing I learned on this tour is that the Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean meet somewhere near Cape Agulhas rather than at the Cape of Good Hope, as so many people believe. Our guide told us that people believed that you could actually see a difference in colour of the water where the two oceans met, as if the oceans knew they were two separate entities as determined by mankind. For the record, there is there is no difference in the colour of the two oceans where they meet.

Even though it’s the most south-western point of the African continent and not most southerly, it’s one of the most iconic geographical points in the world. I usually find that I am disappointed in myself whenever I get sucked in to visiting a geographical extremity, but here it’s so worth it because:

a) it is one of the most famous, and b) the drive and the coast line to get here is so scenic.

Crowd at Cape of Good Hope

Overall I enjoyed this tour. We had a great guide and driver, and it was the cheapest tour I could find for a whole day tour. I did feel frustrated when we were driving along such spectacular coast line that I couldn’t stop along the way, but these are the tradeoffs for the convenience of a tour.

The ticket cost 690 Rand (about $48USD) and there are discounts if you have a the main Baz Bus tour ticket.

View the 1 day Cape Peninsula tour here, or book anywhere in Cape Town where you see the Baz Bus sign (they seem to be everywhere).

An alternative list of tours can be found on Viator . This includes half day tours if you don’t have all day, plus private car tours.

If you are comfortable with driving then I would recommend renting a car, especially if you have a group.

Moscow at Night: City Sightseeing Tour by Car/Bus

When the Sun begins to set, the myriad lights and firefly-like cars buzzing around on the wide highways see Moscow burst into life. This unreal sight is best enjoyed from the height of the capital’s famous viewpoints, Moscow in the evening is truly, truly spectacular. We invite you with pleasure to see the magic of Moscow under the bright night lights!

On this tour, you can expect to see incredible views and the magical transformation sunset has on Moscow’s most iconic buildings, the highlights of which being:

  • The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is a more solemn yet festive sight with its dimly lit lanterns.
  • Basil's Cathedral’s fun and colourful onion domes give off the aura of a mysterious castle, growing out of the darkness of the imposing State Duma building nearby.
  • The spectacularly illuminated Bolshoi Theatre and the Alexander Garden walkway, itself painted in a whimsical pattern of shadows.
  • The legendary Lubyanka Square, steeped in secrecy; just its hearing its name after dark is enough to trigger goosebumps, given its murky past.
  • The House on the Embankment, where old legends are revived and ghostly silhouettes lurk.
  • The Russian State Library, where vague shadows have been seen flickering in its windows. Who knows, could this be the legendary bibliologist Rubakin protecting the works of literary art that lie within its walls?
  • Incredible views from the height of the observation deck at Sparrow Hills. The candle-like skyscrapers of "Moscow-City" shoot into the night in a blaze of glorious light, all reflected back to the observer by the dark waters of the Moscow River. Lest not forget the blood-red fountains on Poklonnaya Hill! An absolutely fantastic spectacle which cannot be seen by day.

Our expert guides will share one thousand and one interesting stories about the aforementioned and other sights, whilst at the same time detailing the vast history of our beautiful capital, past and present.

Come with us and treat yourself to an unforgettable experience amongst the bright lights if Moscow!

  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

  • BeverleyT 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat trip - TERRIBLE We got on the bus, but couldn’t buy a 1 day ticket. They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019
  • IrishCueTravel 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles SLO Motion Not all their fault , but if you plan on trying this Attraction be patient! Traffic is a big problem first and foremost. But to add additional unnecessary delays; the bus stops at each site for 15 minutes at a time or More ! I gave up half way through ( 45 minutes) ; and walked back to the starting point in 10 minutes! • michael g 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Worst hop on/hop off EVER Waited for 40 minutes in the cold rain for a bus that never came... unacceptable. Traffic is so bad that when on a bus the previos day it was barely moving. My advice-get a subway pass and a good travel guide book and do sightseeing on your own! Read more Written October 24, 2018
  • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018
  • Monismith2014 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles it was very enjoyable it was very interesting seeing things we saw walking around from the bus. so much more to see. we had a lot better view of the attractions from the height of the bus.also the bus was reasonable slow which gave us time enough for photos. it stopped at sparrow hill for 10 minutes for picture taking Read more Written September 20, 2018
  • fati666222 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles The best way to see Moscow We did both routes but if you have little time then only do the red route. Its very informative and it takes you to the important sights. The staff on the bus are very friendly and helpful. Read more Written August 20, 2018
  • adolfo17 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles The worst hope-on hope-off service I've ever seen Diffiult to understand the route maps and stops. Staff wouldn't help either. Lengthy stops. No air conditioning. Read more Written August 4, 2018
  • Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018
  • Bernardo P 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat Trips Moscow, Russia Yesterday, I booked a boat trip with the GetYourGuide.com web page and was totally horrible, didn’t have audio guide as it shows on the picture-Nobody Talk-. The girl on the picture-light blue bag-ask for 100 Rubles for show her the QR Code while I had the Booking and PIN number cause she must see the vessel name-Didn’t say nothing and after she said board any vessel. I suggest take the trip and pay on site, avoid fake internet pages, there are many other services with a lot of entertainment, don’t take this ones. Read more Written July 14, 2018
  • Kathrynowl91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good way to see some sites We usually do these tours when we travel. They get you round and you see the sight . The traffic is quite heavy so it is a bit slow but there is not a lot they can do about it. We only did the red route. Just a note people don’t queue here when the bus comes it’s a bit of a free for all. Read more Written July 13, 2018
  • Daniyal91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Was Ok.! Started our tour of moscow from here, We had got the 2 Day Pass with the boat ride. The route and the map was good but not well managed. The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! The boat ride was Ok, a little crowded. No guide provided, just a boat ride with restaurant service Read more Written July 12, 2018
  • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018
