What Cruise Ports Are On The East Coast? 10 Diverse Choices!

One of the best ways to make the most of your time and money when planning a cruise vacation is to choose a cruise port relatively close to home. That will minimize travel costs getting to your departure point. And, you can enhance your overall vacation by planning for some activities in your embarkation city. If you live along the east coast or it is easily accessible to you, you will have the most options for selecting a departure point. (Another advantage of the east-cost cruise ports is that they often host closed-loop cruises that don’t require a passport !)
In this post, we will review what cruise ports are on the east coast. Keep reading for details on your options, as well as some hotel and activity suggestions if you choose to arrive a day or two in advance of your cruise departure.

What Cruise Ports Are On The East Coast: Florida Holds The Record
Florida has the most cruise ports in the world, and we have written about them before. We have provided a detailed report on the five different ports you can find in Florida . So, to briefly recap:
Port of Miami – PortMiami is used both as a home port and a port of call for several cruise lines . The home port cruise lines include Azamara Club Cruises, Carnival, Celebrity Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Viking Ocean Cruises, and Virgin Voyages. The port-of-call cruise lines are AIDA, Hapag-Lloid, Hurtigruten, P&O Cruises, Phoenix, Princess Cruises, SAGA, Scenic Luxury Cruises, Seabourn, TUI Cruises, and Windstar Cruises.
Our favorite hotel for family cruisers in Miami is: Miami Marriott Biscayne Bay .
Port of Ft. Lauderdale – The port of Ft. Lauderdale is named Port Everglades but hosts fewer cruise lines than Port Miami. The cruise lines from Port Everglades include Balearia Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Cunard, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection, Royal Caribbean International, Silversea Cruises, and Viking Ocean Cruises.
Our favorite family cruise hotel in Ft. Lauderdale is the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort .
Port of Jacksonville – The port of Jacksonville, JAXport, offers the services of only one cruise line , the Carnival Cruise Lines, though you can book through a couple of different agencies.
Our recommended hotel for family cruisers in Jacksonville is the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront.
Port of Tampa – Port Tampa Bay homeports a few different cruise lines throughout the year. The cruise lines at Port Tampa Bay include Carnival Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, and Norwegian Cruise Line. Our favorite hotel in Tampa for a pre-cruise stay is The Westin Tampa Waterside .
Port Canaveral – The last of Florida’s cruise ports, Port Canaveral, offers five different cruise lines . The cruise lines of Port Canaveral include Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises.
For information about stopping at the Key West Port on your Caribbean cruise, read more here .
The Cruise Port In Baltimore, Maryland
This home port in Baltimore, Maryland, is called Cruise Maryland and functions as a home port for cruises to Bermuda , as well as those going to New England, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Canada. Though you may be more interested in getting on the ship, there is a lot to see and do in the area, so be sure to look around.
Baltimore offers you the chance to catch up on some art, history, and more if you want to visit one of the city’s three museums. In addition, if you want a close-up experience with your favorite sea critters, you can also visit the massive National Aquarium, which offers a 4D theater experience for those feeling adventurous.
The Cruise Maryland port is a home port for two different Cruise lines, Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean International, but it also functions as a port of call for other cruise lines. These cruise lines include AIDA cruises and MS Amadea.
If you are lucky enough to have Baltimore as a port of call, want to extend your vacation, or want to arrive in town a bit earlier, there are plenty of things to keep your children busy if you wish. One of these brilliant places includes the Maryland Science Center in Downtown Baltimore, where your children can have a look at the child-friendly displays and get a new science experience.
In addition, you and your children can enjoy some activities at one of the top-ranked children’s museums in America by going to the Port Discovery Children’s Museum in downtown Baltimore. If you have children looking for something more adrenaline-inducing or want them to get a good night’s rest after a day out, you can visit iFly in Baltimore for an indoor skydiving experience.
Our recommended hotel for a stay in Baltimore is the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel .
The Cruise Port In Bayonne, New Jersey
The cruise port in Bayonne, New Jersey, gets called the Cape Liberty Cruise Port and offers cruises between the Caribbean, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Canada, Greenland, New England, and the Americas, with three different cruise lines throughout the year.
The three cruise lines that use this port as a home port are Royal Caribbean International Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, and TUI Cruises. Other cruise lines also come past the port that may use it as a port of call.
In 2014 Cape Liberty Cruise Port hosted the biggest and one of the most luxurious cruise ships ever to use this port, called Quantum of the seas, a ship operated by the Royal Caribbean International Cruises line. Hosting the Quantum of the seas is a fantastic feat that shows the growth, development, and progress made on the port since its creation in the 1930s and its use during the second world war .
If you aren’t rushing to get on the ship, you can do some things in Bayonne, including taking your children to one of the city’s water parks or theme parks. If you feel up for taking to the skies, you can also go on an air tour of the city by booking a helicopter ride or one of the other tour activities.
The Cruise Port In Boston, Massachusetts
The Flynn CuirsePort , found in Boston, Massachusetts, boasts a 10-minute drive from Boston Logan International Airport, allowing you to get to the cruise port quickly if needed. This port offers cruises between Boston and Bermuda, Canada, New England, and The Caribbean and is a port of call for many other cruise ships.
If you are looking to board a cruise ship from this port, there are plenty of options for the cruise line you want to use.
These include American Queen Voyages, Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Cunard Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceana Cruises, P&O Cruises, Ponant, Princess Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Royal Caribbean International Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line, Silversea Cruises, The TUI Group, Vantage Cruise Lines, Viking Ocean Cruises, and Windstar Cruise Lines.
The Flynn Cruiseport is such a popular cruise port that in September of 2022 alone, their 11 Homeport Vessels had over 37 000 passengers. Though that is a significant number, in the same month of 2022, they received over 47 000 passengers as a port of call port, from 26 different cruise ships for the month.
One of the recommended things to do in Boston, whether you’re waiting for your ship or using it as a port of call, is to go to the Aquarium, where you can be closer to the sea critters. If you’re interested in it, you can also visit the LegoLand Discovery Center in Boston with your children, be sure not to step on any tiny Legos if you need to return to the cruise ship on time.
For a stay in Boston before or after a cruise, we recommend The Lenox Hotel ; or alternatively, the Seaport Hotel .
What Cruise Ports Are On The East Coast In New York City, New York
The cruise port in New York City called NYCruise has two main Terminals, one in Brooklyn and another in Manhattan. This port was awarded the title of “ Best US Homeport” by TravelAge West Magazine and offers trips to Canada/New England, Bermuda, the Caribbean, and the Bahamas through ten possible cruise lines, depending on the one you choose and the terminal.
The cruise lines that use this as a home port include Crystal Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruises, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, the Cunard Line, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Seabourn Cruises, Holland America Line, and Vantage Travel. Other cruise lines also use this port as a port of call, like many other ports on the east coast.
With New York City undoubtedly being one of the US’s most popular tourist attractions, it is easy to understand why NYCruise had to develop a way to make boarding and disembarking more efficient, something they won an award for in 2011 at the Manhattan terminal.
Whether you’re just visiting this port as a part of the cruise or want to use it as a home port, there are plenty of things to do and see in the area, ensuring you can keep yourself and your children busy. One of the most popular places to see in New York City is the Statue of Liberty, so if you are in the area, it is best if you don’t skip on having a close-up.
The Cruise Port In Charleston, South Carolina
The Port of Charleston offers many cruises as a home port and port of call. The following cruise lines come through this port Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, TUI Cruises, American Queen Voyages, and Princess Cruises.
With Charleston being named 2021’s Top US City by Travel and Leisure magazine, it is easy to understand why so many cruise lines choose to start or make a stop at this port. This port is a part of a city known for its history and natural beauty, giving you plenty of opportunities to explore if your cruise ship docs at this port.
If you are looking to pass the time with your kids, some of the activities you may want to look into include exploring the Charleston Historic District and the Fire Museum.
For a hotel stay in Charleston, we recommend either the French Quarter Inn ; or alternatively the Courtyard by Marriott Charleston Waterfront (note that there are 2 different Courtyard properties in Charleston).

I Just Took a 3-Night Royal Caribbean Cruise -- Here's What I Loved, and What I Didn't
I 'm an avid cruiser. I love being on the ocean, spending time in the sun, and exploring several new places in a single trip without having to take multiple flights. Over the past two years alone, I've cruised seven times, sometimes with my wife, sometimes with my wife and children, and sometimes with friends.
Until recently, the cruises I've taken all had one thing in common -- they were five nights or longer in duration.
However, my wife and I just got back from a short, three-night sailing on Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas , a massive cruise ship that typically sails three- and four-night itineraries out of Port Canaveral in Florida (it's moving to Miami in a couple months). Here's a rundown of our likes and dislikes from the experience, and whether we'd take a three-night cruise again.
Things I loved about our three-night cruise
For starters, since the cruise was Friday through Monday, and we were off the ship by 7:30 a.m. Monday morning, I only had to miss one day of work to take the trip. It was essentially a long weekend trip, so it was very convenient. In contrast, we took a five-night cruise last summer and had to miss an entire week for the Monday through Saturday sailing.
There were a few other things we loved. Because it was a shorter duration than other cruises we've taken, the charge on our credit card was significantly less expensive. A three-night cruise can be a budget-friendly way to try your first cruise, or to be able to cruise more often, without spending a ton of money.
We also never had any trouble finding things to do. We've taken longer cruises, and by the end, it sometimes felt as if we'd experienced everything we wanted to do on the ship. On this trip, we didn't even come close to checking all the items off our to-do list. This can be a positive or negative.
Finally, the vast majority of Royal Caribbean's three-night itineraries from Florida's east coast stop at the cruise line's private island, Perfect Day at Coco Cay. We absolutely loved the day at the private island and having seen the private islands of a couple of other cruise lines, it was definitely a step above. To be sure, you don't need to take a three-night cruise to get a stop at the island. But it's a great way to see it over a weekend.
What I wasn't a fan of
Our three-night cruise was on Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas , which is a big cruise ship. It is a member of the cruise line's Oasis class. Until the recent launch of the Icon of the Seas , these were the largest class of cruise ship in the world. The ship has 17 decks (floors), over a dozen restaurants, several shows, four pools, and many activities to do. To put it mildly, three days simply wasn't enough to see it all.
Because we had a relatively limited time on such a massive cruise ship, it was literally impossible to do everything we wanted to. We certainly tried. We dined at three different specialty restaurants, saw a different show every night, explored all the pool areas, and more. But there's a lot we didn't get to do. There were another two restaurants we would have loved to try, we never saw the ice show (this ship actually has an ice skating rink on board), and we never tried the Flow Riders (surfing simulators) that are on the ship.
To be fair, a week wouldn't have been enough either. And this could be a genius marketing strategy by Royal Caribbean that could entice people to travel back to the port for multiple weekend sailings.
We also would have liked one day at sea (as opposed to being at a port all day). Because of the short duration and two ports on the agenda, we didn't have much time out at sea when it was sunny and warm outside. One of our favorite parts of most cruises is having a day at sea for a relaxing day to wind down from the busy times when we're sightseeing and doing other things ashore.
Would we do a three-night cruise again?
Yes. We had an excellent three-night trip on the Allure of the Seas , and actually have already booked another three-night cruise for later this year on its sister ship, the Utopia of the Seas , which will be Royal Caribbean's newest ship when it sets sail in July. It might be worth it for you to consider a shorter duration cruise if you're new to this type of travel or just want a long weekend getaway -- for us, the pros definitely outweigh the cons.

5 Best East Coast Cruises
By Sue Bryant
Last updated: February 22nd, 2024
- Find a Cruise
Explore beautiful coastal towns, hike around breathtaking national parks, and stroll through historic districts by taking a cruise along the East Coast of the United States and Canada.
East Coast cruises are wonderful opportunities to soak in the New England charm in picturesque towns such as Portland and Rockport, Maine; brush up on your history in cities like Charleston, South Carolina, and Boston, Massachusetts. Head further north and immerse yourself in French Canadian culture and cuisine in Quebec City, or sail south to balmy Bermuda.
If you’re considering a cruise along the Atlantic, here are five of the best East Coast cruises to explore.
Canada & Boston
Quebec City, Canada
Sail round-trip from Boston on an immersive 10-night cruise that takes you along the estuary of the St. Lawrence River into Quebec City, where there’s an overnight to explore the delights of this cosmopolitan place.
Quebec is more than 400 years old, its enchanting Old Town packed with European charm. Gaze in awe at the intricate Chateau Frontenac and make time for the fantastic, interactive Musée de la Civilisation.
You’ll also visit Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island, a landscape of rolling farmland and pristine beaches. Sights here include the red-and-white lighthouse and the house that inspired the classic novel Anne of Green Gables.
Sydney, Nova Scotia
The picturesque port town of Sydney, Nova Scotia , is another stop on this cruise, set amid green countryside. This sleepy place was put on the map by Scotsman Alexander Graham Bell, who lived here and changed the world with his invention of the telephone.
You’ll also have four days at sea to enjoy the comforts of the sleek Celebrity Silhouette , where you’ll find a beautiful pool deck and the inviting Lawn Club, with real grass, picnic blankets, boules, and croquet.
Boston to Fort Lauderdale
Willemstad, Curacao
This is an unusual itinerary that combines history and culture with the sun-soaked ABC Islands , Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao, in the far south of the Caribbean.
Over 10 nights, you’ll sail from Boston to Fort Lauderdale, with your first port of call Bermuda’s historic Royal Naval Dockyard. You’ll have time to explore the old military installations around the dockyard, now repurposed as museums, shops, and restaurants.
Bask on Bermuda’s famous pink sand beaches. There are thriving coral reefs to explore, too, as well as spectacular caves.
You’ll have five blissful days at sea, interspersed with port calls, to enjoy the pool deck and many bars and restaurants of Celebrity Eclipse as you head south through the Caribbean.
In pretty Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao , the waterfront is lined with gabled Dutch houses in rainbow colors. Explore the markets and striking street art of the Punda district and sample the famed Blue Curacao liqueur.
Aruba , like its neighbors, has beautifully preserved Dutch architecture, beaches of white sand, and sea that’s an almost dazzling shade of turquoise. Tiny Bonaire, meanwhile, is a snorkeler’s dream, encircled by a marine park with some of the best underwater life in the Caribbean.
Cape Liberty to Bermuda
Horseshoe Bay, Bermuda
Discover the pink sand beaches of Bermuda on a 7-night cruise that takes you to this string of islands off of the East Coast.
Our Bermuda cruises combine two overnights in Royal Naval Dockyard, Bermuda with at least two days at sea, allowing you to fully explore the highlights of this island nation while also enjoying all the amenities on board.
In Bermuda, snorkel around the area’s many sunken ships, stroll through the shops in downtown Hamilton, and descend into the stunning Crystal Caves, a magnificent natural wonder. During your days at sea, savor world-class cuisine, watch five-star shows at the theater, and relax by the outdoor pool, all while relishing impeccable service and attention from our dedicated crew.

Boston, Maine, & Canada
Faneuil Hall in Boston, Massachusetts
On a Boston, Maine, and Canada cruise, you’ll sail to picturesque towns throughout New England and Canada. Cruise from Boston and spend the morning walking along the Freedom Trail and learning more about the Revolutionary War.
Many itineraries stop in Portland and Bar Harbor in Maine, where you’ll have the opportunity to hike through the sprawling trees and wildlife of Acadia National Park and sample fresh lobster. In Halifax, Nova Scotia , make your way to the top of Citadel Hill for panoramic views of the harbor city. While in Sydney, follow in the footsteps of Alexander Graham Bell and discover the town’s Scottish roots.
Depending on your itinerary, you might visit Saint John in New Brunswick , where you’ll be able to watch the thrilling Reversing Falls Rapids and spend a night in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, a gorgeous waterfront town with Victorian homes and some of the world’s best mussels.
Chateau Frontenac, Old Quebec City
Other cruise itineraries include an overnight stop in Quebec City , where you’ll quickly understand why it’s called the “Paris of America” after having a romantic dinner in a cozy bistro and walking along the city’s beautiful boardwalk.

Bermuda & Charleston
Charleston, South Carolina
If you prefer cruises with overnight stays , you’ll love this ten-night itinerary, which includes two overnights in both Charleston and Bermuda.
Walk around the cobblestone streets of Charleston’s French Quarter, tour an old plantation, discover the beauty of Magnolia Gardens, and enjoy a Southern meal in one of the city’s many award-winning restaurants.
After a couple of days at sea, take advantage of your three days in Royal Naval Dockyard, Bermuda , where you can have fun at Harbour Nights, a weekly party in downtown Hamilton with live music and local street food.
Where do East Coast cruises depart from?

Cape Liberty, New Jersey
Meanwhile, Cape Liberty, New Jersey is conveniently located less than an hour’s drive from New York City. If you sail from New Jersey, you could add a few days to your vacation and explore the Big Apple.
Central Park in Manhattan, New York City
With so many attractions to choose from, the possibilities of what to do in New York are endless. Walk around Times Square and Central Park, have lunch in one of its many award-winning restaurants, shop in SoHo, or catch a Broadway play in the evening.

Country Charm
The British Isles are known for their gorgeous green countryside, which is home to world-renowned natural attractions, historic towns and a plethora of castles. Step outside the city and see what else these countries have to offer during your holiday onboard the best British Isles cruises.
Say Yes to Loch Ness
Get your ocean views at the coastal Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, spot the notorious Loch Ness Monster in the Scottish Highlands, and hike through the mountainous Lake District in England's countryside.
A Royally Good Time
Transport yourself to the era of knights and ladies by exploring the many medieval castles of the British Isles. Visit the British Isles to see Scotland's Edinburgh and Eilean Donan Castles, Ireland's Blarney Castle and the royal Windsor Castle in England.
The Grass is Greener
For a taste of local country life, visit the Cotswolds in England, Portree on the Isle of Skye and Ireland's colourful Cobh, which are home to medieval cottages, stunning landscapes and locally owned pubs and shops.
City Slicker
If you're seeking an adventure that includes quiet countrysides, vibrant cities and cultural hubs, explore Ireland, England and Scotland on a British Isles cruise.
From Pints to Palaces
Each capital city is home to many unique sites, such as The Royal Mile in Edinburgh, which stretches from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace (with many shops and restaurants in between), and Dublin's Guinness Storehouse, where you can sip on a pint of Ireland's famous beer while sitting on a rooftop.
Try one of the walking tours operating daily in all capital cities. For some of the easiest ways to see the top sites of London, stroll from the mediaeval Tower of London to nearby St Paul's Cathedral in all its Baroque grandeur.
This culturally rich area offers a variety of museums, including the National Gallery, the British Museum and the National History Museum in London. In Edinburgh, check out the National Museum of Scotland, where you can see everything from giant T-rex fossils to medieval tapestries.
BEST BRITISH ISLES CRUISES
A cruise to the British Isles is filled with exciting destinations, each with its own style and vibe. Discover the British Isles onboard the Best Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships.
ENCHANTED BY IRELAND
Arriving in Ireland, you'll fall in love with the endless green hills, friendly local pubs and historic attractions of cities like Dublin .
ENAMOURED WITH ENGLAND
There's something for everyone in England – whether you prefer metropolitan meccas like London or the quiet countryside of the Cotswolds.
It's useful to know the London Underground escalator etiquette, which is to stand on the right so commuters can rush by on the left.
Tipping is not customary across the British Isles like it is elsewhere in Europe and in North America. Some restaurants do add a service charge to bills.
If driving in the British Isles, remember that Ireland's road signs are in kilometres, while Great Britain uses miles.
FOR FOODIES A CUISINE OF COMFORT
Each country in the British Isles is known for its signature pub grub and comfort food dishes. These hearty and predominantly meaty meals keep locals warm in a region known for its bracing weather.
Stir the Pot
Made from slow-cooked meat – typically lamb or beef – and root vegetables such as potatoes, onions and carrots, a bowl of Irish stew with a side of crusty bread is only made better when washed down with a pint of Guinness.
The Proof's in the Pudding
Typically served on Sundays, a traditional British roast usually includes roast beef, roast potatoes, a side of vegetables and Yorkshire pudding; a baked pudding often served with gravy. Head to a London pub to tuck into this English tradition.
The O.G. Fish and Chips
Across the British Isles, you'll find thousands of restaurants and shops exclusively serving fish and chips, which first appeared in England in the 1860s. Flaky, tender white fish is deep-fried in a thin, crunchy layer of batter and served alongside thick-cut fried potatoes and 'mushy' peas, as the locals call them, which are blended with cream or occasionally ultra-rich bone marrow.
RELATED PORTS
There are many ports to visit across the British Isles, from Holyhead in Wales, to Lerwick in the remote part of Scotland, to bustling Belfast in Northern Ireland. Fortunately, the British-isles cruise ports are a combination of both urban and rural destinations, so you can choose whatever suits your cruise style.
