"The land of Hill Kingdoms, Temples and Monasteries"

Chamba tourism.

Chamba is a Himalayan town located in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. Known for the ancient temples, the caves, and the edifices that speak highly of Indian history, Chamba is famous for mesmerising views of the Pir Panjal, Zanskar and Dhauladhar ranges in the backdrop of this picture-postcard town. This Himalayan town is located at an elevation of 996 meters on the banks of river Ravi, flanked by Jammu and Kashmir , Lahaul and Kangra .

Chamba is popular for its traditional handicrafts and art along with the miniature Pahari paintings - a form of Indian painting that originated from the Himalayan hill kingdoms of North India during the 17th to 19th centuries. It is also the base camp for several treks in the great Himalayan ranges. This, along with the stunning beauty and tranquil environs, beckons travellers who are looking for an offbeat location among the rather popular Himachali towns. Chamba celebrates two renowned festivals - Suhi Mata Mela, held during March/April for four days and Minjar Mela, celebrated on the 2nd Sunday of the Shravana month, or August. This town of centuries-old fortress and shrines has many folk songs dedicated to it! This destination should not be confused with the similarly named Chamba in Uttarakhand.

Festivals in chamba.

  • The Suhi Mata Mela is held during March/April for four days. It commemorates the sacrifice made by the Rajputi Queen of Chamba, who gave up her life so that the town could receive water from the Sarota stream. Women and children play a prominent role in this festival. An image of their queen, with the Rajput solar emblem, is printed on banners and carried in a procession, through dances and songs, to the Suhi Mata temple.
  • The Minjar Mela is celebrated on the 2nd Sunday of the Shravana month or August. It celebrates the triumph of the king of Chamba over the Trigarta ruler in the 900s AD. It also marks the paddy and maize harvests, and offerings of minjar - paddy, golden silk, rupee coin, coconut and a seasonal fruit wrapped in red cloth - are made. A week full of festivities follow a flag hoisting ceremony at the Chaughan. Lord Raghuvira is mainly worshipped, and on the last day, tribute is also paid to the Ravi river. The locals perform many folk dances and songs, known as Kunjari Malhar during the festival.

Chamba Travel Guide

Chamba is the northernmost district of Himachal Pradesh, and lies at the intersection of Dhauladhar and Zanskar ranges. These are facts related to this district, but aren’t particularly interesting. What is interesting is the opening lines of a famous Himachali folk song which go like this - Shimla nahi basna, Kasauli nahi basna, Chamba jana zaroor. When translated, they mean - Don’t settle in Shimla, don’t settle in Kasauli, but certainly visit Chamba. It is only when you spend your holidays in Chamba that you realise the significance of the song. The landscape here is marked by lakes, streams, meadows, alpine tree covers, valleys and rich wildlife. There are historical attractions, and architectural ones. The main town is located on the banks of the River Ravi, and is surrounded by mountains with dense forests. There are numerous opportunities for sightseeing, thanks to its illustrious past. It is the culture of Chamba though, that leaves you fascinated. The rich artistic heritage of the city is reflected in its miniature paintings, temple architecture and the famous "Chamba Rumal".

An Insight into Chamba Tourism

Some hill stations are known for their beauty, others for their heritage and culture. Chamba combines both of these, and in that way, is different from the other famous hill stations in India . Historical records date its origins to the 2nd century BC, when it was inhabited by the Kolian tribes. Since then, it came under the rule of Rajputs, Pratiharas, Sikh army under Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and the British. It finally merged with India on 15th April, 1948. Naturally, all these kingdoms and dynasties left behind their legacy in the form of temples, palaces and other historic structures. Chamba also boasts a rich culture, which is reflected in its music, fairs, festivals, dances and costumes.

If you are in Chamba and want to attend an ongoing event or get a feel of its social life, head towards the Chaugan. It is located right in the middle of the town and is easy to find. Chaugan is a Sanskrit word, and in English means, four sided. It is an enormous grassy area measuring about 800 meters in length and 80 meters in breadth. It was the British who, in 1890, combined five small chaugan into one single chaugan. Today, it is used for a variety of activities, including picnics and cricket matches. The annual Minjar Mela, which is marked by traditional and modern stalls selling local handicrafts, is also held here.

You should certainly visit the temples during your holidays in Chamba. Apart from the spiritual experience which they offer, most of these temples are also historic structures, as they were built a long time back. One of the most famous of these is the Chamunda Devi Temple . It is built entirely of wood and stone, and dates back over 300 years. It is the only temple with a single story in Chamba, as all the others are built in the Nagara style of architecture prevalent in most of North India. The other famous temple is the Laxmi Narayan Temple Complex , which consists of six temples and is a major historical landmark. The main temple, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, was built by Raja Sahil Varman. What will catch your attention is the chiselled stone cut walls which are adorned with exquisite designs. Katasan Devi Temple is located in close proximity to Baira Siul Hydroelectric project and overlooks the Chamba Valley.

Another place which you can visit during your trip to Chamba is the Saho village. Located about 18km from from Chamba on the banks of River Sal, it is home to the Chandrashekhar Temple, which is about 1,100 years old. Inside the temple, there is a naturally formed Shiva Lingam. It’s interesting to know that the lingam contains a copper coating which was extracted from the old copper mines of Chamba.

A mythological tale associated with the village states that it was from here that Lord Shiva commenced his journey to Manimahesh Kailash Peak is Bharmour with the intention of settling there. During September, the temple hosts an annual fair where the Bhasmasur Dance is a great attraction. What better way to explore the heritage of Chamba than visit the Bhuri Singh Museum. The museum was set up by Raja Bhuri Singh during his lifetime and houses a rich collection of rare paintings, jewellery, coins, artefacts, musical instruments, armours and traditional arms, besides several other artefacts. You also come across rare copper plate inscriptions and other historical documents.

Your sightseeing tour in Champa should also include a visit to Akhand Chandi Complex. The palace is the largest of its kind in Himachal Pradesh. It is intriguing to know how the materials required for the construction of the palace must have been transported, considering the fact that the nearest railway station was almost 7 to 8 hours away. Even though a part of it has been converted to a government college and there is not much to see inside, the imposing structure itself is a reminder of its glorious past.

Chamba is also famous for its miniature Pahari paintings. This school of painting was patronized by Raja Udai Singh and Raja Jai Singh. Most of these paintings are based on Hindu mythology and depict Radha Krishna, Shiva Parvati, Rama Darbar, Yashoda and Krishna, Gopis, Daya Saptashati and Krishna Sudama. Some of the paintings capture the romantic ambience of the monsoon. They can be viewed in the famous Bhuri Singh Museum. This famous hill station in Himachal Pradesh is known for manufacturing traditional handicrafts. One of these is the traditional footwear for both men and women. Interestingly, women’s footwear is called "vegetarian" because it is made without leather. Handkerchiefs and shawls are also produced in large quantities. A unique quality about them is that they are hand spun in such a way that they look identical from both sides.

Chamba also celebrates several festivals throughout the year. The most famous of these is, of course, the Minjar Fair. The festival celebrates nature's beauty, and is marked by the farming community offering the first sprouting corn silk, called "minjar", to River Ravi. Other festivals celebrated in Chamba are Sui Mela, Manimahesh Yatra and Chattradi Jatar.

This is one of the most beautiful places around Chamba. In fact, Khajjiar is often termed as the paradise of Chamba. A lush green saucer-shaped meadow at a height of 1900 m, it is an amazing work of nature. Khajjiar is surrounded by tall Cedar trees and snow-clad mountains and has a lake at the center.

All these, put together, present a breathtaking view. It is due to its unmatched natural beauty and its resemblance to the meadows of Switzerland, that it has earned an official name of “Mini Switzerland of India.”

You can see cows grazing in the large meadow and clouds hovering over it. It is one serene and tranquil place where you can spend hours relaxing. If you are lucky, and the day is clear, you can get a view of Mount Kailash from here. Then there is the ancient Khajji Nag temple here, which is dedicated to the snake god and is visited by many devotees.

Khajjiar is one place that you can not afford to miss when you are in Chamba. It is just 20 odd km from Chamba town and you can hire a taxi to reach there. You can also indulge in adventure activities like Zorbing and paragliding in Khajjiar.

Fairs & Festivals of Chamba

Celebrated in April every year, Suhi Mela or fair is mainly a festival for women. They gather at the Naina Devi temple and worship her. Naina was the wife of King Sahil Varman. Legend has it that the water supply was not regular and sufficient during the reign of Sahil Varman. He wanted to make sure that citizens got ample water, so he built a pathway from Saroha Nalla to town. However, water refused to take the course designed for it.

The superstitions of that time made people think that it was due to some supernatural cause and required the sacrifice of either the queen or her son. Ultimately, the queen decided to sacrifice herself for the cause of the people. The temple has been constructed in her memory and at a place where she sacrificed herself. This fair goes on for 15 days and is among the major festivals of Chamba.

Minjar Fair

Held on the second Sunday of Sharavana month of August, the Minjar fair is the most popular fair of Chamba. Basically, people offer their gratitude to rain gods and pray for a good harvest. The fair is a seven-day long affair.

People from every corner of the Chamba region attend this fair which has been held for centuries. The beginning of the fair sees the hoisting of the Minjar flag in Chaugan. The whole of Chamba wears a colorful look during this period. Sports and cultural events are organized. And at the end, the following Sunday, a huge procession of deities is taken out.

Weather of Chamba

Due to its altitude, the weather of Chamba mostly remains pleasant throughout the year. January and February are the coldest time when the temperature can dip down close to 0 Degree Celsius. It does now snow in Chamba town but the nearby high altitude areas of Dalhousie and Khajjiar receive plenty of snow each year.

Spring season arrives towards the end of March which marks the beginning of tourist season in the area. The following months of April, May, and June are considered to be the best time to visit Chamba because of pleasant weather with clear sunny skies. But please note that summers are also the hottest time of the year when the average temperature can remain well beyond 30 Degrees Celsius.

Monsoon begins towards the end of June and the months of July and August are ruled by the rain gods. Sometimes it can rain here so much that you will be forced to remain indoors and it may even trigger landslides.

September is when the weather turns pleasant again with lush green scenery all around. Autumn arrives in October and all that was green once now turns golden orange. November and December are the driest time of the year with winter settling in and the weather turning cold again.

Best time to visit Chamba

If you are planning to go to Chamba, March to June are the ideal months to visit. You can see the snow-covered mountains as well as the greenery. Monsoons begin in July and last till September. Though it is not advisable to visit during this period, if you want to enjoy the rain of hills, you can plan a visit. And if you are a snow lover, December and January are the best months to Visit Chamba.

From a photography point of view, it makes sense to go in July, August, and September. For a budget trip, try planning in October and November because it is the offseason time. With not many tourists around, you may be able to get a good deal on accommodation. But please note that the scenery is very dull and dry at this time.

For a trip with your family, you should plan in March, April, or May. If you were heading towards Sach Pass from Chamba, then you would have to plan after the pass has opened in June.

April is the beginning of the summer season. Summers in Chamba are warm but nights are pleasant. Normal summer clothing like T-shirts and trousers during the daytime will keep you comfortable.

The monsoon season sees heavy rains. October and November are very pleasant months and nights become cold. And if you are traveling to Chamba during December-February, be prepared for sub-zero temperatures. So carry heavy woolens.

Listed below are some items to pack that can be really useful.

  • Warm Caps (in Winter)
  • Pair of Waterproof Warm Gloves (in Winter)

Where to stay in Chamba

Chamba has a number of hotels and resorts in every budget to choose from. But they offer mainly mid-range and budget accommodation. There are Airbnb accommodations also available. Most of these hotels, guesthouses, and lodges are situated in Court Lane and all of them offer a panoramic view of the surroundings including snow-clad mountains. Himachal Pradesh tourism department also operates hotels that offer decent budget accommodation.

Camping in Chamba

There are several campsites in Chamba that you can stay at but most of them are towards high altitude areas rather than in Chamba town. You can find a few on Jot road or towards Dalhousie and Khajjiar . My advice would be that if camping was on your mind, then you should head towards Khajjiar. There are several scenic spots there where you can even pitch your own tent.

Facilities in Chamba

Chamba town has all the major facilities that a town can offer. You have banks and ATMs in case you need to do any transactions. Petrol stations are also available for fuel. However, CNG stations have not yet been introduced here. For local travel, you have taxis and state-run buses.

What to eat in Chamba

A local dish to try here would be Chukh. It is a hot chili sauce with capsicum, lemon juice, and mustard oil. It is served almost everywhere in Chamba. Other dishes to try would Madhra (rich, slow-cooked kidney beans with curd and ghee) and some

Tibetan cuisine consisting of noodles, momos, soups, and dumplings, etc. If that is not of your interest then almost all Indian dishes (both north and south) get served here. Just take a walk through the market and you will find several places you can eat at.

Shopping in Chamba

Chamba is most known for its shawls, chappals and leather works, and ‘rumal’ embroidery. You can buy these items at the Government Handicrafts Centre at Rang Mahal and in many other shops in the town.     Chaugan market is probably the best place to try some shopping.

Some other items to buy would be miniature paintings and souvenirs made out of wood and metal. But apart from the handicraft items, ‘Chamba Chappals” is the most famous item to buy here followed closely by the locally made pickles.

All major banks have branches in Chamba and provide ATM services as well.

Mechanics / Petrol Pump in Chamba

Mobile Network and Data Connectivity

No matter which network you were on, your phones will work fine in Chamba, both prepaid and postpaid.

Itinerary for Chamba

Last but not least, let me quote an itinerary for a trip to Chamba and the nearby region. An ideal time to visit here would be 5-6 days because it is not just Chamba that you will go to. A trip to this region is only complete when you have covered Chamba as well as Dalhousie and Khajjiar .

For the sake of the itinerary, I will assume Delhi as your starting point. If you were coming from a different city, only the journey on the first and last day will be different, the rest of the details will still apply.

  • Delhi to Chamba – Day 1
  • Local sightseeing in Chamba – Day 2
  • Chamba to Sach Pass snow point / Bharmour – Day 3
  • Chamba to Dalhousie – Day 4
  • Sightseeing in Dalhousie – Day5

Chamba

The “Minjar Mela” is a prominent celebration celebrated in  Chamba valley  on the second Sunday of the Shravana month, in August of every year. It commemorates the victory of the Raja in 935AD of Chamba against the monarch of Trigarta, nowadays called Kangra, as well as the paddy and maize harvests harvested at this time of year.

The event begins with minjar gifts, which consist of a bouquet of paddy plants and golden silk wrapped in red cloth. A rupee, seasonal fruit, and coconut are also included in the offerings. This date is also marked by a flag-raising ceremony at the Chaugan, which kicks off a week of cultural and social events. The deity’s image, Lord Raghuvira, and more than 200 other deities are carried in procession in a chariot drawn by ropes.

The festivities include ‘Kunjari Malhar’ folk dances and music performances. The celebration concludes with a march from the Akhand Chandi Palace to the  Ravi River  when offerings are presented to the river, making it one of the  top sights in Chamba  for tourists visiting in August.

Fabrics for  Rumal embroidery  can be either square or rectangular, however, the sizes can vary widely. Experts in miniature art usually draw the base art, which is characterized by delicate lines. When the painting is finished, the cloth receives the finishing touch of embroidery, a task typically performed by women.

Temple of chamunda devi.

The  Maa Chamunda temple  is located in the Kangra area of Himachal Pradesh, India. It’s about 10 kilometers west of Palampur on the Baner River. Almost 400 years ago, the monarch and a Brahmin priest petitioned Devi for permission to relocate the temple to a more convenient place.

It is reported that some 400 years ago, a monarch and a priest sought the Devi for permission to relocate the temple. The Goddess then came into the priest’s dreams and instructed him to begin excavating the land at a certain location. At that location, the priest discovered an antique idol of Chamunda devi. The Goddess has been worshipped at the same location since the idol was created.

The Himalayan town of Chamba is situated in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district. Chamba is renowned for its stunning views of the Pir Panjal, Zanskar, and Dhauladhar ranges, which form the backdrop to this picture-perfect town and are known for their ancient temples, caves, and buildings that speak highly of Indian heritage. This Himalayan town is surrounded by Jammu & Kashmir, Lahaul, and Kangra and is situated at a height of 996 metres on the banks of the river Ravi.

The miniature Pahari paintings, a style of Indian painting that emerged from the Himalayan hill kingdoms of North India between the 17th and 19th centuries, are among Chamba’s most well-known traditional handicrafts and works of art. It serves as the starting point for a number of treks in the vast Himalayan hills. This, together with the breathtaking beauty and serene surroundings, entices tourists looking for a unique place amid the very well-known Himachali towns.

Suhi Mata Mela, held in March or April for four days, and Minjar Mela, observed on the second Sunday of the Shravana month, or August, are two well-known festivals in Chamba. Numerous folk melodies are devoted to this town of forts and sanctuaries that date back hundreds of years!

This location should not be confused with the Uttarakhand location with the same name, Chamba.

Places to visit

Chamera lake.

As tourists gush about how stunning Chamera Lake is and how they can’t get enough of it, tranquilly is only a byproduct of their stay. The lake and the dam enhance the view and work well together.

Manimahesh lake

Hindu legend claims that Lord Shiva’s dwelling is Manimahesh Lake. It also goes by the name Dal Lake. It is located in the Himalayan Pir Panjal Range. It is 4080 metres above sea level. Due to the snow, it is closed for the majority of the year. As there are 13 kilometres of walking distance, the location is ideally suited for those who enjoy trekking.

Lakshmi Narayan temple

Now, you might think of Chamba as a standard vacation spot with temples and lakes, and you might want to avoid visiting the Lakshmi Narayan Temple, but we would urge you to do the opposite.

Himachal Emporium (rang Mahal)

Those who enjoy crafts, rejoice! The Himachal Emporium is a paradise for all things handcrafted and is located at Raja Umed Singh’s Rang Mahal in Surara Mohalla. The hours of the emporium were 10 am–1 pm and 2 pm–5 pm.

If you enjoy buying regional handicrafts and organic goods, Chamba is the place for you. The famed Chamba and Kangra murals may be seen in Central Chaugan, along with a variety of stone and metal artefacts that make excellent mementoes.

Church of Scotland

If the terms “old world,” “library,” and “architecture” appeal to you, here is the place for you. The Church of Scotland, which was constructed in 1903, is a peaceful haven for people searching for places that speak of antiquity and class without deterring visitors from all walks of life.

Sui Mata Temple

King Varman erected the Sui Mata Temple in Chamba’s Saho neighbourhood in honour of his wife Queen Sui, who gave her life in service to others. The shrine, which is perched atop Shah Darbar Hill, offers a breathtaking vantage point over the small township below.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Chamba is from March to June since the weather is lovely and the temperature is moderate throughout this time. Chamba’s valleys experience a warm summer with chilly evenings. If you’re considering an unconventional honeymoon or trip, go for it. Monsoon season begins in July, and while it’s best to avoid the area during periods of severe rain, the misty, chilly rains add to the valley’s lush vegetation. The month of December is ideal for snow enthusiasts, so pack some warm clothing in case it is below freezing.

Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba is known for its primarily North Indian cuisine. There is, however, also some regional Himachal food available here. Madra is a traditional dish from Chamba prepared from lentils like Rajma and kidney beans that have been cooked with a variety of spices and dry fruits. A crucial ingredient, yoghurt can be found almost everywhere and tastes delicious.
