What is reality, really? Brian Cox's 'Horizons' tour probes the mysteries of the universe

Are space and time really as fundamental as we perceive them to be?

Brian Cox as seen during a speaking event in May 2022.

Brian Cox would like you to consider the very nature of the space-time continuum and our place within it.

That might seem like a big lift, so the world-renowned physicist is here to walk you through it. Cox is currently touring the U.S., bringing audiences a dazzling show filled with not only stunning images of the universe and simulated black holes but also big questions: Why are we here? How did life evolve? Are space and time really as fundamental as we perceive them to be?

In the show, called "Horizons: A 21st Century Space Odyssey," Cox asks these questions and leads audiences on a journey in answering them, from past discoveries by Albert Einstein to current research that's changing our very understanding of reality.

Related: Time might not exist, according to physicists and philosophers — but that's okay

In the field of theoretical physics, Cox told Space.com, "We are being led now, in the last few years, to a theory which suggests that space and time are not fundamental — that there's some deeper structure."

This concept, known as "emergent space-time," is the idea that space and time are not fixed, unchanging things but rather made up of constituent parts, like how the atom comprises neutrons, protons and electrons (and those particles are made up of even more particles). The theory suggests that there are even more layers of the universe to peel back.

One way scientists are studying the idea of emergent space-time is through black holes, Cox said. Black holes pose many conundrums, such as "these things from which nothing can escape apparently have a temperature and glow and evaporate and radiate away," Cox said.

One question plaguing physicists right now seems simple enough: " Do black holes destroy information ?" Cox said. But actually thinking about the question is not simple at all. The problem deals with the idea of Hawking radiation . This theory, first described by Stephen Hawking in the 1970s, suggests that black holes have a measurable temperature. Where does this temperature come from? Basically, imagine two particles that share information between them; one falls into the black hole, and one does not. The particle that falls into the black hole is destroyed with a burst of radiation.

However, these two particles are entangled, according to quantum entanglement theory; two particles share information even if they're millions of light-years apart. So, if one particle is destroyed, what happens to its twin? In the quantum world, information cannot be destroyed. So we're left with a paradox.

And that's just one of the many mysteries about the universe and our place within it. Cox wants audiences to walk away with a sense of awe — at the complexities of the universe, the discoveries humans have made since we first turned our eyes to the sky and how humanity fits into it all.

"The more we learn about biology and the evolutionary history of life on Earth , the more it starts to look like, whilst microbes might be all over the place, things like [civilizations] might be very rare indeed," he said.

— Was Einstein wrong? The case against space-time theory — The 'twin paradox' shows us what it really means for time to be relative — 4 bizarre Stephen Hawking theories that turned out to be right (and 6 we're not sure about)

In other words, we might be the only beings in our galaxy — or at least our corner of it — who have the ability to think about the big questions like the nature of reality, and we shouldn't take that for granted.

"Science has both relegated us from the center of the universe for the last 300 or 400 years, and also, perhaps, placed us in an extremely important position," Cox said.

Professor Brian Cox brings ‘Horizons: A 21st Century Space Odyssey’ tour to Indy — answering world’s deep questions

World-renowned physicist Professor Brian Cox is bringing his Horizons: A 21st Century Space Odyssey tour to the Old National Centre in downtown Indianapolis on Sunday, May 8, 2022.

Tickets are on sale for this must see live experience.

Show Description:

Visually captivating with a touch of humor, Horizons takes us on a dazzling cinematic journey. A story of how we came to be and what we can become.

The deepest of questions will be explored using the latest advances in our understanding of quantum theory, black holes, biology, planetary science, astronomy and cosmology.

What is the nature of space and time? Why does the Universe exist? How did life begin, how rare might it be and what is the significance of life in the Cosmos?

What does it mean to live a small, finite life in a vast, eternal Universe?

Horizons is a celebration of our civilisation, of our music, art, philosophy and science; an optimistic vision of our future if we continue to explore Nature with humility and to value ourselves and our fellow human beings.

Brian will once again be joined by co-host of The Infinite Monkey Cage and award-winning comedian Robin Ince, perhaps the only collection of sentient atoms in the observable Universe capable of overseeing a Q&A with an audience of thousands of people whilst wearing an old cardigan.

Review: ‘horizons: a 21st century space odyssey’ is a fascinating live experience by professor brian cox .

On April 26, “Horizons: A 21st Century Space Odyssey,” starring Professor Brian Cox, was fascinating and exhilarating.

Markos Papadatos

On April 26, “Horizons: A 21st Century Space Odyssey,” starring Professor Brian Cox, CBE, was fascinating and exhilarating. It took place at the iconic Beacon Theatre in the heart of New York City.

The internationally-recognized physicist was able to explore space and time with visually striking and enthralling elements that captured the interest of both amateur scientists and experts. His popular North American tour is produced by WestBeth Entertainment.

With “Horizons,” he is able to take viewers on an educational, scientific, and cinematic journey. It is a story of how we came to be, as well as what we can become. He utilizes state-of-the-art LED screens and other technology, so he is able to create far-away galaxies, black holes, other galactic worlds, as well as a time that excited prior to the Big Bang.

The deepest of questions were explored and pondered using the latest advances in our understanding of quantum theory, black holes, biology, planetary science, astronomy, and cosmology. The musical score was stirring and it evoked a wide spectrum of emotions.

Professor Cox was joined by award-winning comedian Robin Ince, who was the co-host of “The Infinite Monkey Cage,” and he was impressive in his own right.

Most importantly, “Horizons: A 21st Century Space Odyssey” is a celebration of our civilization, music, art, philosophy, and science; moreover, it is a hopeful vision of our future if we continue to explore nature with humility and if we continue to value ourselves and our fellow human beings.

The Verdict

Overall, “Horizons: A 21st Century Space Odyssey” was a spectacular live show that should be experienced by all. Science was alive and well in New York City. This odyssey was timely, relevant and a huge wake-up call for the public.

Professor Brian Cox was able to command the stage the entire time, his presentation skills were top-notch and the scientific information he provided throughout the evening was food for thought, stimulating, and engaging.

He was able to move his audience on both an intellectual as well as an emotional level, and it is highly recommended that one sees him live when he comes to town. Grab some popcorn or drinks, sit back, and be prepared to have your minds blown by Professor Brian Cox’s immersive live show. It was raw, authentic, and profoundly compelling.

Professor Cox is the epitome of grace, class, and sophistication, and the entire production is utterly fantastic. “Horizons: A 21st Century Space Odyssey” garners five out of five stars.

After years performing with different massive boy bands who dominated the charts, AJ McLean and Joey Fatone are teaming up for a new tour, set to kick off this month.

But before the pair embarks on their collaborative A Legendary Night Tour, McLean (of Backstreet Boys fame) and Fatone (of *NSYNC fame) sat down for a new edition of "Spilling the E-Tea," and interviewed one another about their new endeavor, new music, and memories from their boy band days.

"What was your first impression when you met me first?" Fatone asked, recalling their initial meeting back in the early '90s.

"My first impression was everlasting," McLean said with a laugh. "We kind of just gelled. Like you just had a really kind of outgoing personality... a very inviting personality, and you had a great voice."

According to Fatone, his impression of McLean was very similar. "I was like, 'Man, the voice is cool as s**t. It's smooth. He's sexy. He's slick, but he's got his weird edge," Fatone recalled, before ribbing McLean for his choice of simultaneously rocking goggles and sunglasses as a fashion statement.

"Funny story -- I don't know if I ever told you this -- we were in London. It was the opening night of a restaurant/club type place," McLean recalled. " Titanic had just come out and Leo DiCaprio was in town during promotion and there was only one bathroom upstairs [at this place]."

"So all these people were going up and down the stairs. So my security stayed at the bottom. I was walking up, I had the goggles on and the glasses. Leo was coming down the stairs, and I think he may have been a little bit tipsy," McLean claimed. "He looked at me, he said, 'What is all this?' He grabbed my goggles, pulled them and let them go."

"They broke my glasses, [it] cut my nose, and then he laughed and walked away!" McLean alleged. "Cut to: I see him many years later, Howie [Dorough] and I saw him at the SNL 40th [anniversary special in 2015], and he gets in the elevator. He had just done The Revenant and Howie's like, 'Dude, now's your chance! Get him back, get him back!' And Leo goes, 'AJ! Good to see you, man.' I'm like, 'Hey, good to see you, buddy.' He's like, 'This is my mom.' And I'm [thinking] like, 'Oh, man...' That was my chance, but not in front of dear old Mom."

"Right, right, you can't do that," Fatone chimed in with a laugh.

Looking away from the past and toward the future, Fatone asked, "What are you most looking forward to when we start touring together?"

"I'm looking forward to the kind of spontaneity that is this tour, this show," McLean said. "You know, the fact that we can literally flip the script on people nightly and just trying new things."

He's also looking forward to "experimenting, especially with this first round of shows."

"We want to go everywhere with this thing. And, honestly, I mean, we're getting hit up from Brazil, from Australia, from Europe," he added. "So, yeah, I'm looking forward to it. It's gonna be a blast... This is something [we] never got a chance to do with our respective groups."

"I'm always a team player in that sense of just performing," Fatone shared. "So for me, if I can perform with somebody like yourself, it's awesome."

Aside from the tour, McLean also recently dropped new music -- a track called "Electric" --  and explained that he's "a huge fan of '80s funk," which heavily inspired the tune.

"I miss songs that have a great groove. That, [even] if there's no lyrics, it makes you want to move, it makes you feel good. You don't want to skip it," McLean said. "And that’s what 'Electric' is."

Fatone and McLean's co-headlining A Legendary Night Tour kicks off March 15 in California, and runs through July 20. McLean's new single, "Electric," is out now.
