Tunisia Tours & Vacations

Camel ride caravan on the red sand of the Sahara desert, Tunisia

Straddling Africa and the Middle East, this once-overlooked Mediterranean gem is well and truly back on the map.

From the sun-drenched beaches of the north to the unforgiving desert of the south, and with desolate, lunar landscapes in between, Tunisia has quite the unique allure. And as the fog continues to lift after the jarring events of 2015, there’s never been a better time to experience it. It’s not often you can clock Roman ruins this grand, seaside living this perfect, and medieval towns this well preserved, in such quietude. Morocco may be what’s hot, but Tunisia is where to find that next-level slice of North Africa, with a fraction of the tourists.

Learn more about Tunisia

Best time to visit tunisia.

Tunisia boasts a Mediterranean climate in the north and an arid, desert-like climate in the south. Tunisia typically receives most of its visitors in July and August, when the hot weather draws tourists to the beaches. The coldest and wettest months are January and February, although the rainfall average for this time is low and many interior Saharan regions of Tunisia do not see rainfall for years. March to May is a great time to travel as it is less crowded, the temperatures are cooler and the scenery is spectacular. November is considered the optimal time for trekking in the desert. Travelling during the holy month of Ramadan presents benefits and challenges as many restaurants close and business hours can be interrupted, although travelling during Ramadan often provides rare insight into a country and culture during this holy period.

Culture and customs

Tunisia is an Arabic country with a strong sense of history and tradition, yet a good dose of modernity. The overwhelming majority of people are Arabic speaking Muslims; nine in ten Tunisians are Berber, with the remainder a mix of European, African and Arab peoples.

These days social and political life in Tunisia is mostly secular. Since the Arab Spring – a region-wide revolutionary movement sparked in 2010 by the Tunisian Revolution – the Tunisians have enjoyed more religious and social freedom and greater democracy. Still, when travelling, it’s important to keep in mind the country’s Islamic culture. If Ramadan is on, be careful not to drink or smoke in the public presence of those practising it.

The family is an important part of Tunisian life and a good topic of conversation when meeting new acquaintances. Wearing a headscarf is not necessary for women travelling in Tunisia (unless visiting mosques), but it pays to dress conservatively. Language-wise, French and Arabic are the officials, but English is increasingly prevalent – children are nowadays taught it at school.

Eating and drinking

Tunisian cuisine is a mix of Mediterranean flavours, recipes from France and Italy, and Turkish and Berber influences. Seafood is naturally popular in coastal areas in the north, while hearty regional classics like Shakshouka (baked eggs in tomato) are common all over. Two major staples of Tunisian cuisine are harissa (a spicy chilli paste made with coriander and caraway seeds) and couscous (the buttery semolina granules popular in neighbouring countries such as Morocco).

Must-try food in Tunisia

Translating simply to couscous, this is the national dish of Tunisia. The Berber people are thought to have created it, perhaps as far back as the 3rd century. A simple yet delicious plate of flavoured couscous is usually accompanied by baked vegetables and chickpeas, or by meats such as beef, lamb or chicken.

2. Brik pastry

Brik (or “brick”) pastry comes in many forms, both sweet and savoury. It’s the egg- and meat-filled kind you’re likely to stumble upon first. Though its name may suggest otherwise, the dough is relatively thin and delicate. A great first snack you find yourself at a street stall in Tunis.

Not to be confused with the Moroccan version (that’s very different), Tunisian tajine is similar to a quiche or frittata, more of a European-style finger food. Typical ingredients are onions, spices and ground meat, all held together with egg and breadcrumbs and flavoured with herbs and spice.

A fantastic option for vegetarians, Lablabi is a hearty chickpea soup with liberal doses of cumin and coriander. Tuna or egg are sometimes added for a bit of extra punch, and some extra harissa doesn’t go astray. Capers or chopped almonds sometimes top the dish off.

5. Bambalouni (Tunisian donut)

Sweet tooths shouldn’t miss the ‘yo-yo’, also known as a bambalouni, or simply Tunisian donut. Deep fried, but with the subtlety of so many other sweets from the region, it’s often lightly flavoured by rose water, orange blossom or lemon.

Geography and environment

Sandwiched in between Libya and Algeria, Tunisia benefits from its location on the Mediterranean Coast. The south is characterised by arid plains and desert, which gives way to rolling hills and fertile areas prime for cultivation in the north. With a coastline along the Mediterranean Sea, Tunisia has plenty of white sand beaches that are popular with swimmers, surfers and divers. Tunisia's capital and largest city, Tunis, is mostly modern in design, except for the old medieval medina in the middle of town.

Tunisia is a treat for those who love to haggle the North African way. At the country’s many souqs and medinas, you can get a great price on local and authentic items. Shop for endemic spices, blown-glass perfume bottles, traditional ceramics and more.

You may like to purchase a Tunisian rug, an item that will be truly evocative of your stay in the region. Kairouan is a particularly good place to shop for a rug. Just look out for the ONAT (Office National de l’Artisanat Tunisien) stamp of approval on the back of your rug before you buy it, to make sure it’s authentic.

A traditional Arabic shisha (also known as a hookah) is also worth considering as a souvenir. It’s the apparatus used to smoke the characteristic flavoured tobacco of the Middle East. It’s not for everyone, of course, but travellers are known to buy them on their aesthetic qualities alone.

Festivals and events

International festival of sousse.

This three-week festival brings together a miscellanea of arts from across the country. See performances, eat African cuisine and enjoy the biggest carnival parade in Africa.

Festival of the Sahara

It started as a Bedouin marriage market but became a full-blown celebration of arts, culture and sports in the region. There’s delicious food, military parades, greyhound racing and much more.

Ulysses Festival

Ulysses immortalised the island of Djerba when he visited thousands of years ago. The island comes alive yearly with cultural events and performances from across the Mediterranean.

Travel in Tunisia FAQ

All you need to know about travel to Tunisia and visit the most famous Tunisia tourist attractions.

Are these trips Tunisia private tours?

Yes, most of these Tunisia tours are made so that only you, your family, and your friends will travel together. You will not be traveling to Tunisia along with people you never met. But we also have Tunisia group tours available if you’re interested.

At a certain point, while searching on the Internet, you might ask about the difference between private and group tours. The difference is whether you will share transportation with unknown people, family, or friends.

Imagine you buy a tour of Tunisia and come with your family. This will be a regular private tour, where you will have private transportation and a guide during the whole trip. Package for Tunisia tour prices changes depending on the number of days and the quality of hotels. Consequently, a 3-star or 4-star hotel tour will be cheaper than a luxury tour featuring 5-star hotels. The trip cost gets cheaper depending on the people that travel with you since the transportation price will be divided by everyone.

The second situation is if you buy one place in our guaranteed departures for Tunisia group tours. In this case, you will join a group of people traveling along using the same transportation. We set up specific dates with a certain number of open seats so solo travelers can quickly and affordably join our Tunisia tour agency.

As a tour agency in Tunisia, we offer packages focusing on different thematics such as desert, architecture, culture, photography, and nature. Our tour guides in Tunisia will ensure your trip follows the plan, and you will have an unforgettable journey. Traveling in Tunisia is always one of the best options for your following holidays in North Africa.

How much is the price of monument tickets in Tunisia?

For the most famous attractions, Tunisia’s monument and museum entrances range between USD 10 and USD 25.

Tunisia has some exciting and critical registered monuments under the Ministry of Tourism. Our tours usually have all the entrances included in the price, so this is something you don’t have to worry about.

The prices of monuments in Tunisia differ between destinations. The very high price difference seems unusual, but it is how the government and local authorities compensate for the option of receiving visitors.

Most tourist attractions in Tunisia are very well maintained, so expect major tourist sites to be clean and well organized, with proper facilities, available tourist guides, opening times, decent opening hours, etc.

Is Tunisia a tourist country?

Tunisia is one of the world’s most unique countries regarding historical, natural, and cultural heritage. Being at the junction of different cultures, the country possesses a rich history reflecting the number of Tunisia tourist attractions and monuments spread throughout the nation’s massive size within its region.

While you visit Tunisia, you can indulge in thousand-year-old ancient monuments of all types and shapes.

There are 8 properties inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in Tunisia: the Amphitheatre of El Jem, the Archaeological Site of Carthage, Medina of Tunis, Ichkeul National Park, Punic Town of Kerkuane and its Necropolis, Kairouan, Medina of Sousse, Dougga / Thugga.

In addition to its inscribed UNESCO sites in Tunisia, there is a list of more than 16 properties on its tentative list: Parc National d’El Feija, Parc National de Bouhedma, Chott El Jerid, Oasis de Gabès, Les Mausolées Royaux de Numidie, de la Maurétanie et les monuments funéraires pré-islamiques, Le complexe hydraulique romain de Zaghouan-Carthage, île de Djerba, Les carrières antiques de marbre numidique de Chimtou, Frontières de l’Empire romain : Limes du Sud tunisien, Médina de Sfax, Le Permien marin de Jebel Tebaga, Le Stratotype de la limite Crétacé-Tertiaire (limite K-T), La Table de Jugurtha à Kalaat-Senen, Habitat troglodytique et le monde des ksour du Sud tunisien, Rammadiya d’El Magtaa (El Mekta), le site princeps de la culture capsienne, Le site archéologique de Sbeïtla. The perfect example of Tunisia’s history can be seen when choosing your itinerary.

As a Tunisia tour operator, we fully design our packages to fulfill all your needs. We know the country by heart and provide the best services, partners, guides, and accommodations we personally visited and examined.

Is it safe to travel to Tunisia?

Yes, Tunisia is safe to travel to.

Most people have the wrong idea regarding whether Tunisia is safe to travel to. Still, the reality doesn’t match the misleading news we often see on television, picturing Tunisia as a dangerous country.

People are extremely friendly and welcome tourists with open arms. Before traveling to Tunisia, you must open your mind, go out of your comfort zone, and embrace this fantastic destination. You will realize the country is “normal” just a few minutes after arrival.

The crime rate toward tourists is relatively low. Tunisia is one of the safest countries in the region. This Tunis vacation package for Tunisia tour options is extensive since the country is big and full of monuments and things to do.

Is Tunisia safe for tourists? Definitely yes.

Also, if you’re wondering if Tunisia tours for US citizens are safe, local people are very welcoming and love tourists from all over the world. People from Tunisia learned not to mix politics with personal relations and human interaction throughout history.

Are you asking either if Tunisia is safe for Indian tourists? YES, it is.

How can tourists communicate with people in Tunisia?

The official language of Tunisia is Arabic.

It is highly recommended to have specific knowledge of English. In large cities, the middle and upper class know English as it allows them to have more accessible contact with the rest of the world, making the trip much more accessible. Either way, all our Tunisia tours optionally include a full-time guide who speaks the local language so that you feel comfortable learning about the culture of Tunisia, its history, and traditions.

Tour Tunisia

Take in the bewildering contrasts of the familiar and the foreign on a tour of Tunisia. The wonderful mix of ancient and modern, desert and oasis, classical sites, ports and medinas is an exotic blend that gives this country its flavour and appeal.

The country encompasses beautiful coastlines, stunning Islamic architecture, Berber villages and the fascinating remains of once-bustling Roman cities. With its feet in the Sahara and its head in the Mediterranean, Tunisia covers an impressive diversity of scenic ground.

There are several UNESCO World Heritage sites to visit in Tunisia, including the impressive ancient Roman city of Dougga, Carthage and El Djem. Other highlights include the beautiful blue and white streets of Sidi Bou Said village, visits to the ‘Holy City’ of Kairouan and the major resort of Monastir, and the conserved fortress monasteries of Ribat of Sousse.

The capital of Tunis is home to 13th-century medina, the palatial Bardo museum, famous for its spectacular Roman mosaics and Islamic art, and the massive Al-Zaytuna Mosque. To the east is the ancient site of Carthage, one of the great cities of antiquity, where you’ll be able to explore the Antonine baths and unveil the lost city’s story at the Carthage National Museum.

My Tour Operator Is a B Corp. What Does That Mean? Should I Care?

A growing number of travel operators are undergoing the B Corp certification process, which can offer insight into a company’s environmental and social initiatives.

tour tunisia tour operator

By Sophie Stuber

Tanya Dohoney has worked on sustainability initiatives for decades. A retired attorney from Texas now living in Paris, she even started the recycling program for her workplace. When it comes to travel, she also values environmentally and socially responsible companies, which led her to choose Intrepid Travel , a certified B Corp company, for a tour in Morocco in 2019.

The sheer number of sustainability certifications for the travel and tourism industry is almost overwhelming and certainly confusing. Certified B Corp enterprises must meet standards set by B Lab , a Pennsylvania-based nonprofit founded in 2006 that awards for-profit companies with certifications for social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. It can take years — and thousands of dollars — to achieve this accreditation. Globally, there are only 62 certified B Corps in the travel industry and 76 in accommodation and hospitality.

“When you see the B Corp logo, I know it’s been at least semi-vetted,” Ms. Dohoney, 64, said. “I do worry about greenwashing, but you have to start somewhere.”

Other travelers, increasingly concerned about the environmental and social impact of their planes, trains, food waste and more, feel the same way, and a growing number of travel operators are undergoing the B Corp certification process, joining multimillion dollar brands like Patagonia and Athleta, to differentiate themselves from competitors.

Aurora Expeditions , a small ship tour operator focused on polar travel, became certified in 2024, joining other travel companies like the lodging company Sawday’s , and tour companies Selective Asia and Byway . But Hayley Peacock-Gower, Aurora’s chief marketing officer, said the company has focused on sustainable travel since its inception.

“Much of this work we were already doing, but we have now committed to much more accountability and made a legal agreement to sustainability,” she said, adding that Aurora also amended the company’s constitution and formalized internal policies as part of the B Corp process.

What’s the certification process?

Companies are scored on five criteria — governance, workers’ rights, community impact, environmental impact and “stewardship of its customers” — and must achieve an assessment score of 80 or above to pass B Lab’s “Impact Assessment.” Once approved, a company must pay an annual fee based on gross annual revenue and location. For U.S.-based enterprises, this ranges from $2,000 for companies with under $500,000 in gross annual revenue to $50,000 for companies with revenue from $750,000 to $1 billion. (Some organizations, like those owned by women or veterans, can also qualify for discounted fees .)

“B Corp certification offers tourists confidence that they’re visiting and using providers that are responsible,” said Jorge Fontanez, chief executive at B Lab for the United States and Canada.

With more than 2,909 employees, Intrepid Travel is the largest B Corp in the travel industry, earning its certification in 2018.

“When there is so much green fatigue and so many certifications, it’s really hard to discern what’s best,” said Mikey Sadowski, Intrepid’s vice president of global communication. “We felt that B Corp really did have this disproportionate edge and level of trust.”

To meet B Corp standards, Intrepid, which offers trips in 120 countries on seven continents, focuses on initiatives like hiring local guides, sourcing local ingredients and materials, and reducing carbon emissions by planning train-based itineraries — instead of using air transit — when possible.

The Australia-based company recently completed its B Corp re-certification, which in 2024 includes an annual fee of 51,750 Australian dollars ($33,625) and another 900 Australian dollars ($585) for a submission fee, Mr. Sadowski said. For their original certification in 2018, the company also paid a one-time verification fee of 14,500 Australian dollars ($9,573).

Who gets left out?

While this certification can offer insights into a company’s environmental and social initiatives — and perhaps maximize profits, by winning the business of like-minded travelers — these tours and accommodations are often geared toward customers with deep pockets.

For budget travelers or those of less economic means, it can be challenging to find affordable travel companies with B Corp certifications.

“The reality is, B Corps generally skew to the luxury side of the market. And the idea of having any B Corp hostels, for example, is very rare,” said Nick Pinto, a 31-year-old Colorado-based marketing manager who spends several months a year working and traveling abroad.

Mr. Pinto calls himself a “budget conscious traveler” and has found he’s priced out of B Corp accommodations.

“It’s tricky because you want programs like B Corp to be inclusive to create a broader movement,” he said. Mr. Pinto recently spent several weeks in Mexico, but had noted that there were only two certified B Corp hotels in the country.

A third company, Hoteles BF , has since been certified.

What other certifications are out there?

Plenty, along with guidelines, verifications and “ecostars.” The last, a certification doled out by the for-profit Ecostars , evaluates hotels’ environmental impact per visitor stay. This certification, free to receive and apply for, is a fully digital process that takes two days on average to receive. Other certifications gauge sustainability efforts for short-term accommodations, tour groups and other subsectors of the travel industry.

To receive certification from the 1% for the Planet nonprofit, which was co-founded by the Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard and Craig Mathews, of Blue Ribbon Flies, a fly-fishing outfitter, member companies must commit to donating 1 percent of their gross proceeds to environmental organizations. Annual dues start at $500.

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council nonprofit, which includes among its members government tourism boards, travel companies, tour operators and N.G.O.s, vets sustainability certificates.

Organizations also rely on guidelines and resolutions issued by the United Nations as part of the entity’s sustainable development agenda . The guidelines call for biodiversity and climate action initiatives, as well as energy efficiency and renewable energy usage in accommodations. Courses and webinars, which are free to enroll in and to view, charge a per-course fee of 49 euros ($53) if a user wants to complete assignments and receive a certificate of completion.

Many tour operators and travel companies have additionally announced efforts to reach net carbon neutrality, but carbon offsets have been shown to rarely capture or reduce real emissions, or reduce future emissions. The tour operator Run the Alps used to offset the flight emissions for travelers coming to its tours, but the company is re-evaluating the practice.

“Offsetting is not the panacea we hoped it was,” said Hillary Gerardi, the sustainability director at Run the Alps. “We’re trying to move from being good to doing good, which means beyond reducing our footprint, we’re trying to leave some positive impact in our community.”

The tour operator is a member of 1% for the Planet and works with the local research center and citizen-science organizer, CREA Mont Blanc .

But even when a travel company is committed to sustainability, B Corp certification can be a big ask for smaller operations.

“We’re entirely aligned with B Corp status, but up until this year, we were a really tiny company. The certification and process would have been too onerous,” said Doug Mayer, the company’s founder.

But with the company’s growth, Mayer is considering taking the step.

“I can see it coming up for us,” he said.

Japan’s Cherry Blossom Boom Forces Tour Operators to Adjust

Tour operators are managing cherry blossom tourism as Japan experiences a tourism boom.

Tour operators are adjusting their operations amid Japan’s tourism boom during the popular cherry blossom season.

“We’ve moved a lot of our clients away from the idea of going during cherry blossom and to let them know how congested and challenging things continue to be,” said Kelly Torrens, vice president of Kensington Tours.

From late March to early May, sakura, i.e. cherry blossoms, begin blooming in Japan, starting in the southwest regions. It’s one of Japan’s busiest travel seasons. Kyoto’s parks are some of the most popular for cherry blossom sightseers.

Some tour operators have been spreading tourists out to less visited areas. “There are different smaller parks that we can visit that are just as beautiful, but might not have the same number of tourists visiting,” said Matt Berna, president of Americas for Intrepid Travel.

With high demand, some tour operators have had to hire staff earlier. “This year, KKday had to make earlier arrangements for buses and guides in consideration of the shortage of manpower,” said Ayako Kozono, senior manager for public relations at Japan-based tour operator KKday.

Staffing was a major issue during the cherry blossom season last year. Due to its long lockdown, many English-speaking staff left the industry and have been slow to return, causing service challenges.

“The destination really wasn’t ready. The supply chain was a mess,” said Kensington’s Torrens. “We know that no one on the ground in Japan wants to experience anything like that again.”

Japan Was Already Expensive Before Cherry Blossom Season

Tourism to Japan is booming. Japan had 2.8 million visitors in February, up 7.1% from February 2019, according to Japan’s National Tourism Organization .

Demand this year has been pushing costs up. “Due to excess demand, bus and guide prices have risen so much from last year that it is difficult to pass the increase on to the tour price as it is, which is a distressing situation,” said Kozon.

“The cost for us as an operator has gone up across the entire year, across Japan, but particularly around cherry blossom season,” said Berna.

Tourists Annoy Some Japanese Locals

Over the past few months, there’s also been an uptick in local frustration with tourists. There’s been a lot of news coverage of bad manners from tourists, said Kozon.

“Some areas are actually getting so busy that the government’s looking at closing off access for certain times a year to residents only,” said Berna. “People were literally trying to get people’s front of their homes and taking photos.”
