Live reviews

Everything Pharrell Williams touches seems to turn to gold, musically speaking, not least of all N.E.R.D, the mega-platinum selling hip hop-rap-pop crossover band that he fronted for over a decade. The band formed from Williams and Chad Hugo (aka production superduo The Neptunes) teaming up with drummer Shae Hayley in 2001, and since then their hit singles such as 'Rockstar', 'Maybe', and 'She Wants To Move', show the funky soulfulness of their bass-driven beats and have firmly secured their popularity.

For all their slick production and genre-hopping creativity, what makes N.E.R.D truly incredible to see live is the sheer, bouncing energy they bring, feeding off their audience to create an electrifying gig experience. Their songs are unmistakably catchy and guarantee to set crowds a-hopping, such as the set staples from their first album 'In Search Of...', such as the uplifting 'Run To The Sun', and the dirty basslines of 'Lapdance'.

When I saw N.E.R.D a few years ago at Brixton Academy, London, they were nothing short of incredible. The hyped-up atmosphere and the musical force of a full live band, teamed with Williams' charisma as a frontman, made the show one of the most fun and exciting I have ever been to. As an extra-special ending to their set, the band invited hundreds of female fans up onto the stage to groove alongside them for their encore, and you could tell it was out of the pure love of the energy from playing live and interacting with their audience. Seeing N.E.R.D live will more than likely surprise you, and certainly will never be a disappointment.

Nowadays Pharrell Williams is known for being a hot-shot, chart-topping producer or the genius behind ‘Happy.’ However, in 2000, he was part of a group known as N.E.R.D. Taking the production know-how he and childhood friend and musical partner-in-crime Chad Hugo had from their other project, The Neptunes, they got into the studio and dropped four albums that spawned a number of hits including ‘Lapdance,’ ‘Everyone Nose (All the Girls Standing in the Line for the Bathroom) and ‘Spaz.’ They have played around the world and also supported Kanye West and the Gorillaz on their tours.

Because of the high energy that N.E.R.D. bring to the stage, they can play any venue and still come up with the same result. Whether playing the smaller clubs in their Virginia Beach hometown or an outdoor stage by the Brooklyn Bridge at midnight, they bring the party wherever they go. The show brings the band, a DJ set up and Shay Haley, who serves as N.E.R.D.’s third member. With the combination of rock beats, a funky bass and turntables, it’s hard to throw the group into a genre, but at this point, that doesn’t really matter because even the wallflowers who hard bust a move get their grooves on to N.E.R.D. And while Pharrell might not have been donning that infamous cowboy hat, he’s got so much swag that any other accessory would be a bonus.

When No one Ever Really Dies, better known as N.E.R.D performed at UC Riverside’s annual Heat Music Festival, they attracted a ton of people to their stage; including me, and it was definitely a worthwhile experience.

Unlike the rest of the crowd, I really didn’t know their songs, especially since it was my friends idea to come to this set, in fact I didn’t know any of their songs. BUT…they really knew how to hype up the crowd, even though most of the crowd were already fans of N.E.R.D. The duo, consisting of Pharrell and Chad Hugo, had a large hype group that seemingly covered the entire stage. With little effort, they got the crowd moving for their song “Spaz,” swinging their arms and rapping along with them. They kept the energy going while performing “You Know What” and “Rockstar.”

In retrospect I’m really glad that I saw them live, because when I went back to listen to their studio sessions it just wasn’t the same. The amount of excitement that they add to their live versions really takes the songs to a whole different level. Also, the performance was truly in Pharrell fashion, giving everything he’s got because it’s what he loves doing most.

10 Places That Are Perfect For Nerdy Travelers

From set tours of your favorite franchise to amusement parks and museums, here are the nerdiest places for your travel list!

If you consider yourself a big nerd and want your vacations to reflect your interest, there are many places around the world that are perfect for you. Whether you’re really into pop culture in general, certain franchises, museums, or exploring the outdoors, there are nerd designations that will fit the bill. There are many places to visit for people who love comics, movies, television, and more from theme parks to locations where popular shows were filmed.

RELATED: 5 Wizarding World Of Harry Potter Attraction That Are Actually Worth Waiting In Line For (& 5 That Aren’t)

We’ve put together a list of ten of the best places that nerdy travelers need to check out on their next trip.

10 10. THE WIZARDING WORLD OF HARRY POTTER

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was the first really immersive theme park experience that made fans feel like they were actually in the world. This theme park did so well that it has inspired others like it including Galaxy’s Edge and the upcoming Avenger’s Campus . This Harry Potter world can be found in two locations, making it perfect for U.S. fans. You can check it out in Orlando or in Anaheim. Fans of Harry Potter can’t get enough of how realistic this experience feels.

9 9. NEW ZEALAND

For fans of The Lord of the Rings, there’s one place that people just have to check out. New Zealand might be an entire country, but there are so many great places to see here for fans of the series that it’s hard to pick just one. The entire trilogy was filmed here, and there are many tours you can do to check out filming locations in the area.

RELATED:  10 of the Most Beautiful Spots in New Zealand

Going to see Hobbiton is one of the most popular designations as the set is still there in Waikato. You can also check out the Weta Cave museum or go to Mackenzie County to see where the Pelennor Fields location was filmed.

8 8. AVENGERS S.T.A.T.I.O.N. LAS VEGAS

For Marvel fans in the United States, one of the best places to get up close and personal with props from the movies is actually at an exhibit in Las Vegas. While you’re in Vegas enjoying the other sights and buildings, you can go to the Treasure Planet hotel for Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. This exhibit has interactive games and experiences, but the best part of it is the fact that you can see many props and costumes from the show. These include some of Iron Man’s suit, the capsule Captain America was made in, and much more.

7 7. NEW YORK CITY

New York City  is a huge place that has a variety of things to see and do, making it ideal for all kinds of people. But, what many people don’t realize is that there are many nerdy things to do here. First of all, you can check out Midtown Comics which is one of the largest comic book stores in the world. Also, the great thing about New York City is that there are so many filming locations here from movies. For example, Grand Central Station was used in filming The Avengers. Also, there are many other nerd stores including Nintendo World.

6 6. GAME OF THRONES ICELAND TOUR

There are many places around the world that you can check out for Game of Thrones filming locations. But, one of the best of these, is to head to Iceland. Many of the areas beyond the Wall were filmed here including White Walker scenes. There are walking and coach tours in the area that will take you to many of these locations. You can start from Reykjavik. Reynisfjara Beach has striking black sand and was also used in the show.

5 5. ZOMBIE SURVIVAL EXPERIENCE IN ENGLAND

For fans of The Walking Dead , or just of zombies in general, one of the most exciting things to get to do is experience what a zombie apocalypse might be like, without all the horrible parts. There is a notable Zombie Survival Experience in Reading, England that last half a day and occurs in an abandoned shopping mall. There are also many other cities around the world that have started doing similar events, so you can look up and see if there are any in your area.

4 4. MUSEUM OF POP CULTURE

While themed events and filming locations are definitely extremely cool to check out, some nerds have broader interests. If you are fascinated by how pop culture impacts the world, or just into a lot of pop culture things, you should check out the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle, Washington.

RELATED:  10 Crazy & Unique Things You Can Only Do In Seattle

This museum has many exhibits including ones about comics, Star Trek , David Bowie, Minecraft, and more. It also examines how pop culture interacts and shapes the world.

3 3. NATIONAL VIDEOGAME MUSEUM

Similar to the Museum of Pop Culture, the National Videogame Museum is a nerd haven. This is the perfect place to go if you're a gamer, or if you just love learning about the history of video games and how they’ve informed our world. This museum is located in Frisco, Texas. One of the coolest things about this place is that you can play a ton of video games from different consoles through the years including arcades and more.

2 2. HARRY POTTER LONDON TOUR

Harry Potter is definitely one of the most successful franchises of all time, and, in many ways, it’s what brought being a nerd into the mainstream. If you’re able to get to London, there are so many things related to Harry Potter that you can do.

RELATED:  No Harry Potter Fan Can Leave London Without Checking Out These 10 Spots

First of all, you can check out locations from the books as well as the movies including King’s Cross Station and the London Zoo. Plus, you should definitely see the Warner Brothers Studio Tour that includes sets, costumes, and props from the movies.

1 1. GALAXY’S EDGE

Similar to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter , Galaxy’s Edge is the newest immersive theme park experience that has fans excited. This section of the park is opening this month in Disney World and Disneyland. You can see the Millenium Falcon, go to a cantina, and more here. This experience is sure to be thrilling for all fans of Star Wars.

  • The first is Anne Lamott’s brilliant “Bird by Bird.” I highly recommend this for all writers. I love all of her writing, but I return to this one again and again. I particularly love her suggestion to write “shitty first drafts,” which is great advice for anyone who is a recovering perfectionist.
  • The second is Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Big Magic.” I especially loved her discussion of not relying on your art for your income. Yes, your art might make you money, but that’s not the reason to create it. And having a day job/alternate source of income can be quite freeing in that it puts less pressure on your art. I’d never thought about it that way. But I found that idea liberating, and I found her examples of all the writers who had day jobs to be quite validating.
  • The last one is Beth Pickens’ “Make Your Art No Matter What.” Like the above books, this is one I revisit. This book explained me to myself. Artists are people who have to create in order to feel connected to themselves and the world around them. They are happier when they are creating. Understanding this helped me further value the writing process and how it feeds me—and it helped me separate the value of that from the end result.
  • 1. This is my first published YA novel but the 3rd YA novel I’ve written. I started brainstorming the book on and off in 2016, started outlining it in 2019 in between other projects, but didn’t sit down to write it until the spring of 2021. Once I did, the first draft came pouring out in 7 weeks.
  • 2. Like Elliott, I grew up in Santa Barbara and attended Santa Barbara High.
  • 3. Adams Elementary, where Elliott attends her weekly support group, is where I almost went to school (we lived nearby), but I ended up attending Roosevelt Elementary instead.
  • 4. The coffee shop Elliott and Madeline go to in chapter 2 doesn’t exist in real life, but it was loosely modeled after one that I used to go to in LA, which was, in fact, called Anastasia’s Asylum.
  • 5. The names Elliott and Madeline were both on my short list when we were naming our daughter.
  • 6. Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time at Franceschi Park, where the coven gathers. We had family picnics there when I was a kid, and as a teenager people from my high school used to go there to drink. I can neither confirm nor deny if I was one of those people!
  • 7. There is now a park ranger on-site at Franceschi Park who actively kicks you out at sunset, so sadly, it’s not actually an ideal place for coven gatherings in real life. But a girl can dream.
  • 8. I was part of a Girl Scout troupe from private school Laguna Blanca (Chloe’s school) because my cousin, who is my age and whom I was close with, went there. I was the only public-school kid in the troupe and I always felt like a complete outsider—especially when we met at troupe members’ fancy Montecito or Hope Ranch homes.
  • 9. I based Mary’s house on my childhood home (though her décor is quite different).
  • 10. The final moment in the book always makes me teary.

  • Fortidens fantastiske navne: Vincentina, Flemmine, Clothidis

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
