The tour was absolutely perfect and exceeded our expectations. Our guide was so knowledgeable and was interested in getting to know us. The chef (Chandolo) was brilliant - his food was amazing and he was also a really warm, welcoming person. The whole team worked great together and I would 100% recommend!

8 Days Safari tour itinerary for Makgadikgadi Pan, Maun & Nxai Pan National Park: Unite With The Wild Side Of Botswana

We had a wonderful time! Rocky, Jimmy, and Simba were excellent as drivers, guides, cooks, and problem solvers. We ate very well indeed. I will comment that the tour we took was quite different from the stated description of it. For example, we did not go to the salt pan. It seems that Rocky, the boss of the crew, received a different itinerary than what we thought we would be doing. How did that happen? The places we did go were terrific, and it was not until the second last day of the trip, that we realised the discrepancy. Rocky offered us a way to go to the salt pan, but for a couple of reasons, we declined that offer. Please note that I am not complaining about Rocky, Jimmy, and Simba. They followed the information they had received. I will also say that while we were accepting of the situation, some people could have reacted differently, and that would not have been fair to our crew. To summarise, we loved the trip! Credit to Rocky, Jimmy, and Simba for looking after us so well and sharing their beautiful country with us. Sincerely, Arthur George Busch

BEST RATES FOR MOKORO TRIPS FROM MAUN

Botswana mokoro trips.

Okavango Mokoro Trips

Okavango Delta,  a natural wonder of epic proportions.

A mokoro trip in the Okavango Delta is a unique and traditional way of exploring this stunning wetland region in Botswana . A mokoro is a dugout canoe that is carved from a single tree trunk and is used as a mode of transportation in the delta's shallow waters.

The Okavango Delta is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including elephants, lions, buffalo, and a variety of bird species, and a mokoro trip is an excellent way to see this incredible wildlife up close. As the mokoro glides silently through the waterways, you will be able to observe the animals as they go about their daily activities.

The trips are guided by experienced polers who navigate the mokoro through the shallow waters and reeds. The pace is slow, allowing you to take in the breathtaking scenery and sounds of the delta, and to immerse yourself in the unique and peaceful environment.

In addition to wildlife viewing, a mokoro trip is also an opportunity to learn about the traditional way of life in the delta and to gain an understanding of the relationship between the people and the environment.

Overall, a mokoro trip in the Okavango Delta is a unique and unforgettable experience that offers a unique perspective on this magnificent wetland and the wildlife that call it home

Region Explained

On the south-eastern edge of the Okavango Delta, straddling the banks of the Thamalakane River, the bustling frontier town of Maun serves as the gateway to northern Botswana. If you’re on a fly-in safari, you’ll likely not leave the airport, instead making a quick change of planes before winging off into the central Delta. Those arriving by vehicle, however, usually stay a night or two, replenishing supplies, making repairs, getting laundry done and so on. Maun has large shopping centres, garages, banks, bars and camping supply stores, serving not just the steady stream of 4×4 visitors, but the hundreds of lodges, hotels, campsites and safari tour operators that ply their trade in the region.

On the south-eastern edge of the Okavango Delta, straddling the banks of the Thamalakane River, the bustling frontier town of Maun serves as the gateway to northern Botswana Credit: Ride Botswana

Flights over the Delta: The Okavango Delta is spectacular from above, and a flight over the Delta is highly recommended. A number of companies offer light aircraft and helicopter tours – with minimum flight time of 45 minutes. As is takes some minutes to get over the Delta properly, booking at least an hour is a good idea. Helicopters are more expensive, but the visibility – and photo opportunities – are much better.

Gunns Camp overlooks the legendary Moremi Game Reserve.

Mokoro trips: Mekoro (plural) are the Delta’s traditional dugout canoes and multi-day excursions can be arranged from Maun. If the water is high enough you’ll start with a speedboat transfer from Maun itself, otherwise a vehicle will drive you north of town to the launch site. Once into the Delta, local guides will pole you along, stopping at deserted, wild islands for a few unforgettable nights under the stars. Day trips can also be arranged, but it’s usually more practical to stick to the Thamalakane River – most river lodges have small motorboats for birding and sunset cruises.

Practical Advice

Maun is a great place to head it you’re travelling solo – everyone passes through the town on their way north or south. It’s much more affordable booking group activities into the Delta and in Maun you’ll be able to join bigger tours and meet new people. All of Botswana’s major campsite and tour operators have offices in Maun and although it’s always a good idea to book in advance, last minute itinerary changes can be made in Maun in person (which is often much easier than by email or over the phone!). There’s not much safari-related that you can’t get done in Maun, from buying a new tent or camping chair to welding or major mechanical repairs. It’s also the last place to get fuel before the long drive north to Kasane.

Just got back from an incredible trip to Africa (South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana) and did a lot of reading in the related forums here beforehand which was super helpful. Figured I’d add my trip report here in case anyone finds it useful for their own planning.

I’m a 42 year old woman from the US and travelled solo from March 14-27. The main goal was to spend a handful of days riding horse in the Okavango delta. I’m usually an independent traveller, but the riding safari requested the use of a travel agent to simplify logistics on their end…which I fully understand. They gave me the names of two recommended agents in the US and I opted to go with the one that appeared to be a smaller, family operation—Lazy Lizard Travel. While we did have a few issues with communication at the beginning, they were overall super friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the area…and we shared a lot of the same opinions re: responsible travel. I told them to ‘do their thing’ and I’d stay out of it. It was hard to let go of control, but things worked out pretty well in the end.

Though I am vegetarian and do intermittent fasting at home, I don’t necessarily adhere to these when I travel. I also no longer drink.

I’ll be posting my trip reports in segments in the appropriate forums, but a quick overview of the itinerary was:

Day 1: Travel

Day 2: Arrive South Africa (Johannesburg)

Day 3: South Africa (Johannesburg) to Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls)

Day 4: Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls)

Day 5: Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls) to Botswana (Okavango Delta)

Day 6: Botswana (Okavango Delta)

Day 7: Botswana (Okavango Delta)

Day 8: Botswana (Okavango Delta)

Day 9: Botswana (Okavango Delta)

Day 10: Botswana (Okavango Delta) to South Africa (Cape Town via Maun)

Day 11: South Africa (Cape Town)

Day 12: South Africa (Cape Town)

Day 13: Depart South Africa (Cape Town)

Day 14: Travel

Fair warning…this will be VERY long! Sorry. Can’t help myself.

Day 5, part 2: Kasane to Cement, Macatoo Camp

A representative from Macatoo Camp was waiting when I landed. Though we had to wait another 45 minutes or so for a second plane to deliver the other 3 guests they were expecting that day. Everyone accounted for (though without one guest’s luggage which didn’t make her connecting flight :( ), we headed to camp (about a 30 minute drive)…with zebras, elephants, and buffalo along the way!

General info about Macatoo Camp.

While the camp can cater to non-riding companions, it’s primarily a horseback safari camp…for experienced riders. You ride approximately 6 hours a day…a fast paced 4 hour ride in the morning and a slower 2 hour ride in the evening. Usually you’ll have two horses and alternate between them—an evening and morning ride on one, then switching to the other. With a back up horse just in case. Though if one’s not a good match, they’re happy to find you a new mount (they have around 60 horses total). If you don’t feel like riding one morning or evening, no problem. You always have the option of a game drive.

It’s a small camp, only 8 tents. One of which can be reserved without a single supplement if you’re travelling alone. Though if it’s already booked, they reserve the right to charge a single supplement depending on demand. When I was there, we had around 8 guests at any one time. As soon as 1-2 people left, 1-2 immediately came to take their place. About half of us were travelling solo. All of us were riders, there were no non-riding companions while I was there. Nationalities while I was there included French, Irish, English, and American.

The camp is semi-fenced…for elephant and buffalo (the elephants were destroying the trees in camp…and the buffalo had taken to sleeping on the pathways at night). You’re free to move around as you wish until after dinner, when they escort you back to your tent when you’re ready for bed. Power in the tents is solar, though dinner is a lantern/candle/fire lit affair. Hot water was plentiful. They do have some very slow wi-fi available for part of the day if needed (though it was nice to completely unplug for a few days). They were surprisingly able to adapt to dietary needs—we had several gluten-free people present in camp and they took great care to make sure their meals were perfect.

This is a great camp for solo travellers as everyone is co-mingled for riding/game drives and at mealtimes. No dining alone! And there’s even assigned seating at the evening meal (seated by a different person every night). It’s really a lovely way to get to know everyone!

The schedule (at least when I was there) was a 6:00a wake up with tea/coffee in your tent, a light breakfast around the fire at 6:30a, ride out at 7:00a until 10:30-11a (depending on the heat) with a stop mid-ride for a snack and to stretch your legs, lunch around 11:30a/12:00p, free time until 4:30p when we met for tea/coffee and cake, ride from 5p-7p, and finally dinner around 8:30p. I never made it much past 10p in the evenings, but some people stayed up later around the fire.

You ride out with two guides. A main guide and then a rear guide, who is your leader during an emergency (while your main guide deals with said emergency). Since we had approximately 8 people in camp at any one time, we mostly rode in two groups of 4 (except for my first morning ride where one guide had a conflict and so all 8 of us rode out together).

To try to keep me from boring non-horsey people with horsey details, I’ll just summarize the horses I rode here:

Nxabega: 15.2hh, 16 year old, grey ArabX. This guy carries a fair number of scars from old injuries (I’d say he’s had an eventful past), but he doesn’t let them slow him down in the least. Forward. Sensible. A whole lot of fun and my favorite mount. In fact, ended up riding him a few more times than anticipated as my backup horse was sidelined for a couple rides. Never did learn how to pronounce his name so just called him ‘Sir Grey.’

Ellion: A rangey 16.2hh, 13 year old, Bay Namibian Warmblood. It was starting to feel like a joke…give the shortest person (5 ft) the tallest horse you can find. :) Ellion was a ton of fun. Super forward. A bit cheeky. But I ended up asking to leave him at the barn after our first fast ride together. One of our group wasn’t very good about keeping her horse in single file at the gallop…and Ellion wanted to race. I’d managed to keep him in hand, but only just barely, which wasn’t a very fun ride for me. And, besides, they literally had to find a fallen tree to hoist me up onto his back during our breaks in the field.

Neptune: Neptune was a solid, handsome bay Boerperd around 15ish hands tall. He was the backup horse for one of the other riders in my group, but ended up as my mount one morning. Laid back in nature, Neptune wasn’t going to be hurried. He’d get there when he’d get there. :)

Mamuno: 15.3hh, 6 year old, bay Namibian Warmblood. My backup horse and my second favorite ride. Only wish we’d gotten to go out more together! He was alert and a smooth, comfy ride. A little strong to stop at times, but not stupid about it (and I think if we’d ridden together a little more we would have worked that out).

Overall, the horses were well cared for and certainly know their job! Oh…and they only keep geldings in the herd.

*************

When we arrived, we had a quick introduction to the camp and the riding expectations (what to do in an emergency, ride single file (to discourage the horses from wanting to race), hand signals the guides use, etc)…then it was straight down to the barn for our first evening ride.

The evening rides really ended up being one of my favorite things. An easy relaxed pace, the temperature cooling off, and beautiful light as the sun sets. My group’s guide particularly loved elephants…and, inevitably, every evening he’d position us perfectly at the edge of a waterhole so we could just sit and watch them as long as we’d like.

Day 6: Breakfast with Lions

My group’s guide had to go pick up a guest from another camp, so instead of splitting up, we rode out as a group of 8. It was dry and windy…which meant with that big of a group there was whole lot of dust! And they ride fast! (My group, as a consensus, asked our guide for slightly less intense rides in the morning, which he was happy to oblige.) The first field gallop was a little intimidating…but I soon had a feel for my horse and we were keeping up with the pace. Highlights of the ride included meeting their ‘resident’ elephant, Eddie, (the reason there is now an elephant fence)…and a hyena who we literally had to stop for as she sauntered, in no hurry, through the line of horses. The horses are good at their job, but they did spook once on this ride. When we encountered a small herd of cattle that had wandered into the area. Elephants…no problem. Cattle…evil! :) We paused long enough to take photos to document their brands so that the owners could be compensated for the cattle (which were going to have to be destroyed as it’s a foot and mouth disease endemic area).

Lunch was a surprise affair in the bush, complete with cool wet towels for our dirt caked faces and chilled champagne for those who wished. Beef and onion pie, lentils, salad, rolls, and a cheese plate.

Back in our smaller groups for the evening ride (and from here on out). So many elephants! And our guide got us perfectly positioned as a huge breeding herd of buffalo came down to the waterhole with a brilliant red sunset behind them.

Dinner consisted of an onion and brie tart, chicken cacciatore, couscous, squash, cauliflower, and chocolate mousse. While we were all talking after dinner, there was some rustling in the bushes next to the table and the guides turned their flashlights on the noise…to reveal a beautiful gennet! A perfect end to an incredible first full day of safari!

Day 7: Dinner with a hyena

The morning ride was once again incredible. Tons of hoofstock—zebras, wildebeest, tsessebe, impala. Four lovely giraffes that let us watch them browse for a while. A large flock of guineas. A few hippos in the ever decreasing pools—one of which told us, in no uncertain terms, to stay away from their water! While most of the animals are pretty accepting of the horses, zebras and giraffe are surprising difficult to get close to on horseback! Lots of praise for our very patient guide!

Lunch was back at camp. Pasta, salad, butternut squash with feta, and tropical fruits.

Absolutely amazing!!! When we arrived, there were already over a hundred elephants gathered and they continued to pour in from the bush in all directions. Huge herds of zebra, buffalo, and wildebeest. And more hippos piled into the water than you could count. They found us a perfect shady spot and unloaded cool drinks…so that we could watch for about an hour. No one regretted missing the evening ride!

Then it was back to camp…or so we thought. Instead, we ended up at a lovely clearing where a candlelight dinner was set up. Eddie the elephant grazing in the background as the sun set. Dinner was tomato soup, pizza cooked in a pizza oven made out of an old termite mound, green salad, bean salad, and malva pudding. As we were sitting and talking after dinner, there was noise in the grass just next to the table. A sweep of flashlights revealed a hyena no more than 10 feet away! She wandered along the length of the table, went off into the bush, then came back about 30 minutes later to walk along the opposite side of the table before continuing on her way. Completely undisturbed by the fact that we’d set up right in the middle of her evening route.

Day 8: Galloping with zebras

I wasn’t sure that there’s be anything to top our first couple days. I was wrong. This morning, we encountered large herds of zebra and tsessebe…who let us gallop along with them as they moved across the floodplains! On the way back to the stables after the morning ride, we surprised a cheeky juvenile bull elephant. We’d been keeping an eye on him as we approached, but he was too busy ripping apart mopane trees to notice us. When he finally did, he took great offense and gave a mock charge! The horses were fabulously brave. The group retreated as previously instructed under the lead of our rear guide…and our main guide stood his ground and gave a verbal scolding. Deciding we weren’t worth the effort, the teenager sulked deeper into the bush.

Lunch was once again back at camp. Lasagna, salad, chickpeas, and a cheese plate.

Our group didn’t make it very far on the evening ride. Right away we stumbled on a small herd of elephants at a waterhole with two itty bitty babies…who were having a great time playing with each other in the water. We spent nearly the whole time watching them! On the way back, our guide glimpsed a honey badger…but she melted away into the tall grass before he could say anything.

When we got back to camp, we found that they’d set up a grill and made us a lovely braai. Sausage, kudu, salad, mashed potatoes, roast veggies, and banoffee pie.

Day 9: Stolen breakfast

Again, I thought…surely we can’t top the previous days. And, again, I was wrong. Early on in our ride, we came across a hyena soaking in a pool as she digested her breakfast. While we were watching, she suddenly perked up…alert to something in the near distance. Moments later the baboons in the trees she was watching went crazy and the hyena took off at a run. Our guide suggested we follow (by a slightly roundabout route to stay downwind). We arrived only a minute or so after the hyena…to a fresh baby impala kill. Our guide suspected a juvenile leopard…so we searched the trees for a while, with no luck. But…the hyena was more than happy to let us sit and watch her eat her find. Afterwards, we later stumbled upon a lone buffalo cow…and her fresh baby calf, still wet and wobbly!

Lunch was a surprise again today. Located at a platform in a tree with sweeping views of the delta! Chicken and veggie pie, salad, bread, and tropical fruit. Complete with champagne for those who opted to enjoy. Lots of choices today at lunch as well—about half the group decided on a game drive in the evening (the other riding group thought they had spotted lions on their ride)…and a handful also made arrangements to sleep out on this platform that night. I opted for riding and, after having climbed the steep stairs to the platform once, decided to stay in camp for the evening.

During the free time that afternoon, I finally discovered what had been making such a racket near my tent for days. A HUGE lizard. 5-6x the size of a squirrel! Also stumbled upon some adorable, large bats roosting near the pool. The highlight of the afternoon was really the herd of elephants that had been grazing on the floodplain in front of camp…until something spooked them and they went thundering past the tents, just feet away from the platforms!

Right before the evening ride, news came from MackAir about my departure time (you find out at 4p the day before you depart). We had to be at the airstrip around 10:30a…so there was time for a quick morning ride tomorrow if I wanted. Of course!

Everyone met back together for dinner at the camp. The game drive did indeed come across the lions! Oxtail stew, rice, cauliflower, green beans, and sticky toffee pudding. Then we split up again as some headed to the treetop platform for the night.

Day 10, part 1: Departing Macatoo Camp

Then it was over. Just enough time for a quick shower before we rushed off to the airstrip to catch our plane to Maun. And, for me, onward to Cape Town to recover from several hard days of riding. Flew on Airlink again. This time the agent didn’t care if I carried on my helmet, so a whole lot less anxiety for me! :) We were supposed to depart at 1:30p, but it ended up being 2p before we even started to board. There were drinks and a light lunch (no vegetarian option this time) served on the flight , which was nice as breakfast seemed a long time ago after our busy morning ride! (Though I was happy I hadn’t eaten anything before getting on the MackAir flight as it was quite rough today and we had several stops—was glad I’d taken a dose of meclizine before I’d left camp!)
