We just returned from a Cherry Blossom tour with Tohoku and it was fabulous. The hotels, food and services was impeccable. Everyone who had travelled with this company before had only positive comments. We highly recommend them.

Hokkaido. My experience with this firm was just okay. the rose garden had no roses, the meals on the go was not that great. Meals at the hotel or a restaurant were better. The new Tokyo tower visit was a waste of time, the horse farm boring, etc, the hotels just okay. The itinerary needs to be improved. I should have gone with TAUCK tours....

Thrilling Tohoku

April 10, 2024 by Robert Schrader Leave a Comment

Whether you’ve come here searching for a comprehensive Tohoku travel itinerary, or are simply seeking general information about Japan’s exciting northeastern region, you’re in the right place. I’m excited to share anecdotes and advice about my various Tohoku trips with you, and to get you as excited about this underrated part of Japan as I’ve always been.

Likewise, the paragraphs that follow aren’t specific to any one season, even if many of my photos depict Tohoku winter travel. As is the case for most other destinations in Japan , Tohoku is nothing if not a place you can enjoy 365 days per year.

Without further ado, let’s dive into the amazing region that is Tohoku, Japan, in all its cultural and natural glory. I have a feeling you’ll soon be booking flights! (Assuming you haven’t done so already.)

Where to Stay in Tohoku

You’ve probably gleaned from my various Tohoku travel blog posts that I’m ambivalent about certain Tohoku hotels. This is especially true in cities. From Morioka’s Art Hotel to the Almont Hotel in Sendai, it’s very difficult to distinguish urban accommodation in one Tohoku city from another. (Note that this is not necessarily a problem: All are high-quality and fairly priced, to say nothing of how large rooms tend to be by Japanese standards.)

On the other hand, if your Tohoku travel itinerary takes you to more rural places, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how special your sleeping quarters will be. At least if you aren’t on much of a budget. Whether you choose Shouan in Miyagi prefecture’s scenic Matsushima Bay, or Meigetsuso in the wooded hills of Yamagata prefecture, it’s not an exaggeration to say that Tohoku’s best hotels can costs you tens of thousands of yen per night!

Popular Places to Visit in Tohoku

tohoku travel reviews

Sendai is the largest city in Tohoku, and one of the most commonly visited, but I didn’t appreciate it for a long while. I’m glad I changed my tune . From city center attractions like Zuihoden Temple and the Aoba Castle Ruins , to day trips to wondrous spots like Matsushima Bay , Sendai far exceed anything you’re expecting from a visit there. Miyagi is also the prefecture where you find the internet-famous Zao Fox Village , although I’ll be frank: I wouldn’t really recommend you visit here .

tohoku travel reviews

If you’re on the hunt for Tohoku cherry blossoms , there’s no place better to go than Hirosaki Castle (which is also excellent in other seasons, including winter, as I recently learned ). Located in Aomori prefecture about an hour south of Aomori city (which is also very worth visiting, especially if you like Japanese festival floats or fresh apples), Hirosaki Castle is world-famous for the so-called “petal moat” phenomenon, which occurs about a week past the peak of the sakura . In most years, this occurs during the last days of April or the first days of May. If you have extra time, I’d also recommend touring sake-breweries in Hachinohe along the Sanriku Coast , or visiting scenic attractions such as Lake Towada and Oirase Stream .

tohoku travel reviews

Another place with attractions high on my list of things to do in Tohoku is Kakunodate . Conveniently located along the Akita Shinkansen line, this charming town is full of former Samurai houses and temples, and is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season. Of course, it’s only the beginning of Akita prefecture , which also includes the monster-infested Oga Peninsula , some of Japan’s best ski fields and of course, Akita City .

tohoku travel reviews

Next up on the list of Tohoku travel destinations is Iwate , whose capital Morioka is a charming riverside city whose humble skyline rises beneath the prefecture’s namesake Mt. Iwate . Once you finish eating famous Jajamen noodles in Morioka city, you can continue off the beaten path of Iwate , whether that entails hiking along the scenic Oirase Stream , marveling at the Dragon Eye of Hachimantai , taking a dip at Jodogahama Beach in Miyako or enjoying a boat tour at Lake Towada , one of the largest and deepest volcanic lakes on Earth.

tohoku travel reviews

As I mentioned in the intro to this post with regard to the timing of your Tohoku itinerary, winter is a popular time—even if you don’t ski. Which is not to say that the snow monsters Mount Zao are the only thing to do in Yamagata prefecture. Cherry blossoms abound in Yamagata City in spring, while actual cherries grow in the town of Sagae starting from early June. Although Yamadera temple (along the Senzan Line back to Sendai) is at its most stunning during the autumn, it’s also delightful during the summer months. Furthermore, Yamagata is home to the coastal city of Sakata , a charming center of sake breweries, Geisha tea houses and so few tourists you’ll feel like it belongs to you !

tohoku travel reviews

Fukushima is perhaps Japan’s most misunderstood prefecture, for reasons that should be obvious to you if you were alive and sentient in 2011. However, in addition to the fact that Fukushima-ken is definitely not still radioactive, it happens to be a treasure trove for travelers. I recommend basing yourself in Aizu-wakamatsu , a castle town where you can dine on sauce katsu before venturing to more distant destinations, be they the Ouchi-juku old street, the Goshikinuma five-colored ponds or Tadami Bridge.

The Best Time to Visit Tohoku

You’ve probably noticed that my Tohoku travel guide focuses much more on spring and winter than other seasons. However, I also love visiting Tohoku in autumn and summer, and I’ll now reference specific destinations that make me feel that way. My favorite autumn color spots in Tohoku, for example, include Mount Hakkoda in Aomori prefecture and Naruko-kyo Gorge in the wilds of Miyagi prefecture.

You say you’re planning a Tohoku itinerary for the summer ? Many of my favorite summer destinations in Tohoku is actually located a stone’s throw from my favorite winter ones. Indeed, Tohoku hosts as many summer hikes as it does opportunities for winter skiing, my favorites of which include Mount Iwaki in Aomori prefecture and Mount Iide , which actually straddles three prefectures.

Other FAQ About Tohoku Travel

What is tohoku known for.

In popular culture, Tohoku is unfortunately known primarily for the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster. For travelers, however, Tohoku is known as a wonderland of snow monsters (Mt. Zao), onsen (Tsuru No Yu) and ski slopes (in Akita, Niigata and elsewhere), as well as underrated cities like Sendai, Morioka and Aomori.

Is Tohoku safe?

Tohoku is one of the safest places in Japan, which is one of the least dangerous countries in the world even in its most “dangerous” reaches. While there’s always the risk of an earthquake anywhere in Japan, the chances of a strong or certainly catastrophic one befalling you are minimal. Likewise, unless you plan to hang out in the small nuclear exclusion zone, there is no risk of radiation from Fukushima.

How far is Sendai from Tokyo?

Sendai is about 90 minutes from Tokyo by Shinkansen . ANA offers a couple of daily NRT-SDJ flights, which take less than an hour, but these are impractical given how long it takes to get from central Tokyo to Narita Airport—it’s faster just to take the train!

The Bottom Line

If you weren’t excited to plan your Tohoku itinerary before you arrived here, chances are that you are now. Rather than telling you precisely where to go or what to do, my goal with this page has been to inspire you, and to stoke your curiosity for digging deeper into this underrated, rich region. This is not to say you can’t assemble a complete trip using the information I’ve shared—you absolutely can. On the other hand, if you would rather truth someone else (namely me) to sweat the details, commission a custom Japan itinerary today .

Aomori Prefecture: Full of Nature and Culture Spots

Oirase gorge: a verdant, relaxing area with clear streams.

Oirase Gorge is one of the most scenic areas in Aomori Prefecture. It’s a place to enjoy the seasonal beauty of azure blue skies, gentle mountain streams, fierce waterfalls, verdant forests, and unique rock formations and landscapes. Most people visit Oirage Gorge between May and June when the area comes alive with spring verdure, and between late October and early November when you can enjoy Oirase’s fall foliage.

Hirosaki Castle: The Top Spot for Cherry Blossoms in Aomori

Hirosaki Castle, which is known as the best place for cherry blossoms in Aomori Prefecture, was built in 1611 by the second head of the Hirosaki clan, remaining their main residence and the locality’s center of power for 260 years. The area around the castle eventually became Hirosaki Park, where the local residents now go to relax. Starting in late April, the area comes alive with people from all around who visit the park to admire its roughly 2,600 cherry trees in bloom.

The castle keep that was rebuilt in 1810, together with the three watchtowers and five castle gates that retain their form from the time the castle was first built, have been designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

Iwate Prefecture: Enjoy Its Deep History

Chuson-ji temple: a gorgeous cultural treasure that embodies the splendor of the oshu fujiwara clan.

Chuson-ji, part of the Hiraizumi World Heritage Site (designated in 2011), is an ancient temple that was founded in 850. After its founding, Kiyohira, the first lord of the Oshu Fujiwara Clan, undertook a 20-year construction project of an extensive complex on its grounds that was dedicated to the memory of all those who lost their lives in all the battles that raged throughout the Tohoku region during the latter half of the 11th century.

The highlight of the temple complex is Konjikido, built in 1124. It is a dazzling hall covered inside and out with gold leaf, and it contains an enshrined image of the Amitabha Buddha. It is the only building that remains intact in its original form today.

Sankozo is a treasure hall that houses more than 3,000 Chuson-ji treasures, including many National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. Be sure to pay a visit so that you can experience a bit of the dazzling culture of the Heian period that blossomed throughout these lands back when the area was known as “Mutsu.”

Miyagi Prefecture: Nature Abound

Matsushima: a stunning scenery created by the many islands of matsushima bay.

Matsushima is considered one of Japan’s three most scenic spots, together with Amanohashidate in Kyoto Prefecture and Miyajima in Hiroshima Prefecture. Made up of 260 islands dotting the calm Matsushima Bay, the view over Matsushima is simply stunning. Take a ride on a cruise to see it all up close.

There are four viewing points located in the north, south, east and west of Matsushima Bay to get a great look at the entire area.

The Godaido temple hall, considered a symbol of Matsushima, was rebuilt in 1604 by Date Masamune, one of Tohoku's most famous and popular warlords, and is now a designated Important Cultural Property.

There is a lot to see in Matsushima, so if you’re ever in the area, be sure to take your time to enjoy it.

Naruko Gorge: A Picturesque Ravine with Sheer Cliffs and Unique Rock Formations

Naruko Gorge is located in the city of Osaki in northwest Miyagi Prefecture, at the border of Yamagata Prefecture.

It is a V-shaped gorge created by the Daiya River, a tributary to the Eai River that flows from northern to central Miyagi Prefecture, and has sheer cliffs that are up to 100 meters tall and 2.5 km long.

The Naruko Gorge Ofukasawa Trail is a wonderful hiking path where you can enjoy fresh verdure between late April and early July, and colorful fall foliage between late October and early November.

You can enjoy panoramic views of the Ofukasawa Bridge from the observation platform at the Naruko Gorge Rest House, so be sure to check it out if you’re ever in the area.

Akita Prefecture: Learn More About Northern Japan's History and Culture

Kakunodate: the little kyoto of michinoku and its many samurai houses.

This is a popular tourist area among both Japanese and foreign tourists who come to enjoy the charming townscape consisting of numerous old structures like samurai houses, all located in a compact, historic area that’s just 2 km in diameter. The main street has been designated as an Important Preservation District of Historic Buildings by the government and is protected as a cultural property.

Kakunodate's scenery offers something different with each season, from the spring cherry blossoms to the early summer fresh verdure, the colorful fall foliage, or winter snowscapes. However, the area is particularly famous for its cherry blossoms. During the cherry blossom season, which lasts from late April to early May, many tourists gather to enjoy the beautiful contrast between the black walls of the samurai houses and the pale pink of the weeping cherry blossoms.

Our Top Tips

JR Pass for Whole Japan

Explore Japan in the most convenient and economical way with a Japan Rail Pass! It is valid for the majority of railways and local buses operated by JR.

Nyuto Onsen: Enjoy the Seasonal Beauty of the Village

Nyuto Onsen, located at the foot of the Nyuto Mountains, northeast of Japan's deepest lake, Lake Tazawa, is one of Akita Prefecture's most famous hot spring villages. There are seven hot springs and seven inns in the area which is surrounded by virgin Japanese beech forests. Every inn draws its water from a different source, so each hot spring has a unique texture and benefits. They all accept day-trip visitors, so why not make a day of it and visit as many as you can? The village is located in the middle of the beautiful nature of Akita, which offers something unique and beautiful with each season.

Yamagata Prefecture: Spend a Great Time in the Vast Outdoors

Ginzan onsen: where warm gaslights and hot spring steam create a nostalgic atmosphere.

One of Yamagata Prefecture's most famous onsen hot spring villages, Ginzan Onsen is a charming tourist destination where 100-year-old wooden structures line the banks of the Ginzan River. The greatest appeal of Ginzan Onsen is its retro townscape full of delightful retro buildings, cobblestone streets, and gaslights that engulf the village in warm light during the evenings. When you’re at Ginzan Onsen, you feel as if you’ve traveled 100 years back in time.

The best time to visit Ginzan Onsen is in the winter when the snow-covered village looks magical with all the steam from the hot springs and the warm light of the gaslights hanging above it.

Recommended Hotel in Ginzan Onsen: Ginzanso

Risshaku-ji Temple: The View Will Leave You Breathless

Risshaku-ji Temple, which was founded in 860 by Jikaku Daishi, a priest of the Tendai school of Buddhism, has long been revered as one of Tohoku's most sacred places.

The temple is affectionately referred to as "Yamadera" (mountain temple) as it has structures on the side of a steep mountain, including the Konpon Chudo hall (a national treasure), the Nio gate, the Godai-do hall, and the Kaisan-do hall.

Risshaku-ji is also famous as the place where Matsuo Basho, a famous Japanese poet, composed one of his most famous poems: "Deep silence, the shrill of cicadas, seeps into rocks."

The Godai-do hall, which was built to appear as if it was protruding out of a sheer cliff, enshrines the Godai Myo-O (Five Great Wisdom Kings) and is said to be the place where Jikaku Daishi prayed for peace on earth. It is the best viewing spot in the entire temple complex, offering amazing views of townscapes and the surrounding mountains.

Fukushima Prefecture: Fantastic Views, Hot Springs, and More Await

Ouchi-juku: travel 400 years back in time.

Ouchi-juku, which is nestled among the mountains of Shimogo in the Minami Aizu District of Fukushima, was built 400 years ago as a post town on the road connecting the city of Aizu-Wakamatsu in Fukushima to Imaichi in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture.

There are more than 30 thatched roof houses found along the road here, making you feel as if you’ve traveled back to the time when the town was first founded. Ouchi-juku became a registered Important Preservation District of Historic Buildings in 1981.

The Miharashidai observation deck on top of a hill called Mt. Yudono offers amazing panoramic views of the thatched roof houses on both sides of the road, and is a popular photo spot.

Sightsee Around Tohoku!

The Tohoku region is full of beautiful natural landscapes that offer you something different with each season, and all it takes is just one trip for you to want to revisit the region again and again. When you do, we hope that this guide will help you plan the perfect Tohoku trip.

DESTINATION Tohoku

  • Destinations

The Tohoku region of Japan is home to unspoiled rural landscapes and historical treasures, outdoor summer adventures and endless powder snow in the winter

Japan's northeastern wilderness is a huge region encompassing six rural prefectures, bound together by custom, heritage and recent tragedy. The devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck in 2011 brought out the resilient nature of Tohoku's people, and local passion and pride are putting the area back on its feet. There's a lot to be proud of—dramatic landscapes, history-rich sites, craft sake and a host of outdoor activities like rafting, hiking and skiing. Much more rural than Tokyo yet more developed than Hokkaido , the Tohoku region makes for exciting excursions from the capital and memorable side trips on the journey to the northernmost region of Japan's main island.

  • The explosive sound, color and drama of the Aomori Nebuta Festival in summer
  • The temples, gardens and archaeological sites of World Heritage-listed Hiraizumi, in Iwate
  • Sweet cherries in Yamagata and juicy peaches in Fukushima
  • Easy access from Tokyo or Hokkaido on speedy bullet trains to Aomori and Akita

5 Day Tohoku Itinerary, Japan – 2024 Travel Guide

The Tohoku region in the very north of Honshu (Japan’s main island) plays home to the most beautiful, natural landscapes that I had no idea even existed in Japan!

I had the amazing opportunity to work with the Japan Tourism Board over the course of 5 days during the month of September (Autumn) to explore these less-touristy locations, specifically Aomori Prefecture and Akita Prefecture, which often get overlooked.

Tohoku is a place that has a much slower lifestyle compared to the busy cities of Japan, boasting incredible landscapes such as massive crater lakes, nature parks with flowing waterfalls, mouthwatering foodstuffs, rich cultural history, fun-fuelled activities, and an all-around friendly atmosphere.

TOHOKU ITINERARY

In this Tohoku travel guide, I have outlined my complete 5 Day Tohoku Itinerary with a list of all the locations I visited, my experience in these places, where I stayed, and some other useful information to help you plan your own trip to Aomori and Akita!

Arrival Aomori Airport

Upon arriving at Aomori Airport at around 9:00 am, we rented a car at the airport and we were swiftly on our way.

When renting a car from Aomori Airport, there is English-speaking staff that will be able to assist and answer any questions you may have about the road rules in Japan.

Oirase Gorge

Our first location in Aomori Prefecture was the Oirase Gorge, approximately 2 hours drive from Aomori Airport.

Oirase Gorge is said to be one of the most beautiful valleys in northern Japan boasting a running stream that is fed from the nearby Lake Towada and a number of pristine waterfalls!

I don’t know about you, but when I pictured Japan in my mind I never expected to see waterfalls so Oirase Gorge is a very special place well worthy of visiting.

We spent around 2 to 3 hours hiking upstream through Oirase Gorge along a well-maintained 9km walking track, stopping off at several waterfalls and crystalline rock pools to marvel at their natural beauty.

After a relatively long but easy hike in Oirase Gorge, we headed on to our next stop, Lake Towada.

Lake Towada

Lake Towada is said to be the clearest lake in all of Japan and one of the best things to do in Tohoku!

This huge crater lake features two peninsulas that extend out almost a third of the way across and the vibrant blue water contrasts beautifully next to the lush green trees that surround it.

There are a few options for viewing Lake Towada and they are onboard a sightseeing boat, on foot from the shores of the lake, or by driving up the hilly roads to one of many viewing platforms for extensive panoramic views.

Sightseeing boats on Lake Towada operate every hour from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, between April – October and the price is around 1,400 Yen per person.

lake towada, tohoku

After a wonderful afternoon spent at Lake Towada, we drove to the city of Hirosaki which is approximately 1.5 hours west of the lake.

There are dozens of accommodations to choose from in Hirosaki ranging from Luxury to Mid-Range and Budget hotels. Click Here to search all accommodations on Booking.com.

Tsugaru Museum

On Day 2 of our Tohoku itinerary, we kicked things off at the Tsugaru Museum to watch a traditional cultural performance known as Tsugaru Shamisen and after that, we wandered through the arts and crafts workshops watching the local artists carving out Japanese spin-tops on a wooden lathe.

The Tsugaru Museum is a great activity and experience to add to your list of things to do in the Tohoku region!

The next location on our Tohoku itinerary was Shirakami-Sanchi which is listed as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site since 1993.

Shirakami-Sanchi straddles the border between Aomori and Akita Prefectures and is home to the beautiful Anmon Gorge.

We spent the afternoon hiking through Anmon Gorge along forest trails, discovering spectacular waterfalls and wildlife along the way. It’s an easy to moderate hike that takes around 2 to 3 hours.

Hiking through Anmon Gorge was definitely the highlight of my day and it’s not to be missed on your list of things to do in Tohoku!

From Anmon Gorge, we headed back to Hirosaki for the night which is approximately a 45-minute drive from the gorge.

Juniko Lakes

The following morning we left early to visit the famous Juniko Lakes in Akita Prefecture which is absolutely stunning and can easily be reached by an easy walking trail that leads through the forest.

My favorite lake, and the most popular at Juniko, is Aoike which translates to ‘Blue Pond’ and it lives up to its name with its vibrant, turquoise color, and the Autumn foliage floating on top of the water added to the beauty of this location.

We spent around 1 to 2 hours walking around the lakes and I also flew my Drone Camera  to capture some images of Juniko from an aerial perspective.

Godzilla Rock

That afternoon, we traveled further south to an epic landmark known as Godzilla Rock which is located along the coastline in Oga, Akita Prefecture.

Godzilla Rock resembles the face of Godzilla and is best visited at sunset when the sun is bright orange and it seems as if Godzilla has a fireball in its mouth.

The rocks are quite sharp and uneven along this section of coastline so mind your step when making your way from the car park to Godzilla Rock.

After watching an incredible sunset at Godzilla Rock we headed to Akita City for the night which is approximately a 1-hour drive south of Oga.

There are dozens of accommodations to choose from in Akita City ranging from Luxury to Mid-Range and Budget hotels. Click Here to search all accommodations on Booking.com.

Lake Tazawa – Things To Do In Tohoku

On Day 4 of our itinerary, we headed inland again from Akita City to Lake Tazawa which is most famous for being the deepest lake in Japan with a depth of 423 meters.

Lake Tazawa is quite similar to Lake Towada which we visited earlier on in the week, offering sightseeing boat tours and beautiful views from every angle.

A few popular attractions dotted around the edges of Lake Tazawa are the Red Torii Gate of Goza no Ishi Shrine and the golden statue of a legendary local girl, Tatsuko.

There is also a tar-sealed road that leads right around the circumference of Lake Tazawa, boasting a very peaceful drive with several viewpoints overlooking this spectacular crater lake.

It’s safe to say that Lake Tazawa is not to be missed on your list of things to do in Tohoku!

Unfortunately, these accommodations aren’t available to be booked online but you can contact them directly via telephone or email. All it takes is a quick Google search for these details.

Kuroyu Onsen

Tamagawa Hotspring

On the last day of our itinerary, we made our way from Kuroyu Onsen to the Tamagawa Hotspring in Akita.

Tamagawa Hotspring, also referred to as Tamagawa Onsen, was once a sulfur mine that has since turned into a popular tourist attraction.

Not only is Tamagawa a popular attraction, but the hot springs and surrounding areas are said to cure illnesses such as cancer. During our visit, we saw hundreds of Japanese people laying around on mats close to the sulfuric fumes that filled the air. It was definitely a unique experience and something you don’t see every day.

The landscape surrounding the hot springs is spectacular and there is an easy walking trail that takes you right through the center of it all.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

The currency in Japan is Yen (¥) and the exchange rate is approximately $1 USD = 100 ¥.

Purchasing a sim card in Japan is very simple. You can do this at the airport on arrival or find a convenience store close to your accommodation. For approximately $40 USD, you can get a local sim card that comes with 10GB of data.

There are plenty of ATMs in Japan located in most convenient stores, in front of banks, inside hotels, etc. where you can easily withdraw cash.

Most Japanese people can speak English, so if you are ever lost or need help with something you will be able to converse in English.

Also, all the signs at the airports, train stations, shopping malls, etc. are written in both Japanese and English.

BEST TIME TO VISIT JAPAN

The best time to visit Japan depends on what you plan to do. I personally prefer the spring and summer months in Japan (April – September) when temperatures are warm and the landscapes are vividly green.

However, visiting Japan in winter (December – March) is absolutely magical because the landscapes are completely covered in glistening white snow.

Visiting Japan in winter also means you have to opportunity to go skiing and snowboarding in Japan’s alpine regions.

The 10 best things to do in Tohoku

10 things to do in Tohoku Japan

The north-eastern region of Tohoku makes up almost one third of Japan’s main island of Honshu, yet it remains largely unknown to overseas travellers. Comprising six prefectures – Akita, Aomori, Fukushima, Iwate, Miyagi and Yamagata – and stretching from the Sea of Japan, across the plains, rice paddies and mountains to the Pacific Ocean, Tohoku is a land of abundance and dramatic nature. Here are the 10 best ways to discover this intriguing part of Japan .

  • Soak in a hot-spring bath

Natural hot springs ( onsen ) have been rejuvenating the Japanese for centuries and the locals of Tohoku are no exception. Steaming waters, rich in therapeutic minerals, bubble up from below the earth throughout the mountain villages such as Naruko Onsen and Zao Onsen. Dip into one of the most scenic outdoor springs at Chikusenso , a smart ryokan (Japanese-style inn) in the valley below Mount Zao. Many of its 30 tatami rooms have terraces with private hot-spring tubs, but the star is the rotenburo (open-air tub), which has three sulphur-rich tubs of varying temperatures (all hot) on a forested terrace above the Sumi River.

  • Be ‘reborn’ on a sacred mountain

Mount Haguro, Mount Gassan and Mount Yudono – the three peaks of Dewa Sanzan in Tohoku – are among Japan’s most sacred. Each summer, lodges at the foot of the mountains fill with pilgrims and visitors preparing to hike through the ancient cedar forests to the summits, guided by yamabushi – ascetic monks who are famed for their feats of endurance, such as waterfall bathing and fire walking. Dressed in white robes, Kazuhiro Hayasaka, a yamabushi and 17th-generation owner of Daishinbo Shukubo lodge , leads visitors on mindful hikes to experience the first stage of this pilgrimage – rebirth on Mount Haguro. This culminates in a sacred Shinto ritual at the top, followed by a spectacular Buddhist temple lunch ( shojin ryori ) using mountain-foraged vegetables.

  • Wake up above a paddy field

Standing on concrete stilts above flooded paddy fields on the Shonai Plain in Yamagata, Suiden Terrasse hotel is a remarkable architectural landmark. Designed by architect Shigeru Ban, the hotel opened in 2018 in the heart of one of Japan’s most important rice-growing areas. Its dramatic scale and striking zigzag roof belies the fact that, inside, guests are wrapped in the cosy glow of cedar. The 143 minimalist rooms are built from oak, plywood and even cardboard, and each one has a giant window with views across the paddy fields to snow-capped peaks. Don the gorgeous indigo cotton roomwear by Yusuke Yatsuhashi, the creative force behind denim label Kuro, when you head for a soak in the hot-spring bath.

  • See master artisans at work

With an abundance of towering cedar forests, maples, oaks and cherry trees, it is no surprise that Tohoku has a strong tradition of wood craftsmanship. In hot-spring villages region-wide, travellers will find kokeshi dolls – highly stylised and collectable wooden figures with oversized heads and inscrutable faces. At the Zao Kokeshi Museum in Miyagi, visitors can see more than 5,000 kokeshi and try their hand at painting their own under the guidance of an apprentice artisan. In Yamagata, furniture company Tendo Mokko continues to produce its innovative mid-century-modern plywood designs, including Sori Yanagi’s 1954 Butterfly Stool, which can also be seen in the permanent collection at MoMA in New York.

  • Fly by helicopter over Japan’s Pacific Coast

Hundreds of pine-forested islets off the coast of Sendai in Miyagi give Matsushima Bay its reputation as one of Japan’s top three most scenic views. From the vantage point of Tohoku’s Air Service’s sleek Airbus H135 helicopter (privately chartered from Sendai Airport), you can spot vast oyster and scallop beds, beaches and hidden shrines, as well as take in views across the Zao range. If the weather is fine, request to fly over Mount Zao’s Okama crater lake, or north along the Pacific Coast – currently being reforested and reshaped after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake.

  • Eat sushi and drink sake

Tsuruoka City in Yamagata is a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. It’s no surprise, as the spine of mountains, plains, paddy fields and coastline make the surrounding region rich in produce. For freshly landed seafood, take a seat at the counter of Daruma Sushi in Sakata City – established in 1937 – where the third-generation owner and chef Atsushi Suzuki creates nigiri to order with his own secret blend of local rice. At Okazaki in Sendai, Miyagi, chef Toshiaki Okazaki conjures up contemporary kaiseki (Japanese banquets) with ingredients including snow crab and Sendai wagyu. The accompanying sake menu reflects Tohoku’s status as one of Japan’s best sake regions. Discover how it is made at acclaimed Hatsumago Brewery in Yamagata, a rare brewery making 100-per-cent kimoto sake.

  • Meet a maiko

With their white make-up, crimson lips, elaborate long-sleeved kimono and thick obi sashes, the maiko of Sakata in Yamagata evoke the city’s theatrical heyday as one of the most important trading ports in Edo. Watch the performances as they revive traditional geisha dances and Yamagata folk styles at Somaro , a 200-year-old restaurant-turned-tea house in the city. Maiko dances are accompanied by the solo singing of a senior geisha and the haunting sound of the shamisen , a traditional three-stringed instrument.

  • Visit UNESCO World Heritage temples

Hiraizumi in Iwate prefecture seems an unlikely rival for regal Kyoto , yet in its 12th-century zenith it was the home of the northern branch of Japan’s ruling family, the Fujiwara clan, who established an elaborate aristocratic culture in the now-sleepy hillside town. What remains of Hiraizumi was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011 for its temples, gardens and archaeological sites. Highlights are the vestiges of the Jodo garden at Motsu-ji temple, and the Konjiki-do (Golden Hall) at Chuson-ji temple, which is adorned in gold leaf and mother-of-pearl. Don’t leave Hiraizumi without sampling the local wanko soba noodles: 24 lacquer bowls, each filled with a strip of zaru soba (cold soba) accompanied by dipping sauce and condiments such as radish, mountain vegetables and ginger so every mouthful is different.

  • Stay in a traditional inn

No visit to Japan is complete without a night on a futon and tatami in a traditional ryokan , or luxury inn. Saryo-soen on the Natori River in Akiu Onsen, Miyagi, is as authentic as it gets, with its tea house-style architecture, brimming koi pond and alcoves adorned with ikebana floral arrangements, antique kimono and calligraphy. The suites are a maze of shoji screens that slide open to reveal everything from a garden terrace and tea room to private indoor and outdoor onsen baths. Do as the Japanese guests do and slip into a yukata robe for a stroll around the garden’s maples and bamboo.

  • Ride Japan’s fastest bullet train

The Tohoku Shinkansen is the speediest bullet train in Japan, its jade livery whizzing through the countryside between Tokyo and Aomori, on the northern tip of Tohoku, at 200mph. It takes just 90 minutes to get from the Japanese capital to Tohoku’s largest city, Sendai. Regular carriages are immaculate but, for the ultimate railroad indulgence, check out the Gran Class service on the E5 Hayabusa trains. It’s the equivalent of airline first class, with a low-lit cabin of just 18 fully reclining leather seats, and a gracious attendant offering up hot towels, fluffy slippers and the tastiest ekiben (station bento box), filled with Tohoku ingredients.

The Perfect Tohoku Itinerary – From Aomori to Fukushima in 4 Days

January 14, 2024 by Bino Leave a Comment

While Japan is a popular travel destination, not many international travellers make it north of Tokyo (with the exception of Hokkaido). The Tohoku region or the northern side of the island of Honshu encompasses the prefectures of Miyagi, Yamagata, Iwate, Akita, Aomori and Fukushima. It is a treasure trove of onsen hideaways, medieval castles, scenic mountains and lakes, impossibly picturesque towns and world heritage sites sans the tourist hordes.

During my latest trip to Japan, I wanted to do something different and instead of focusing on the usuals such as Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto; I headed north to explore the side of Japan that not many get to see.

In this itinerary, I show how you can explore Tohoku conveniently in a few days, departing from Tokyo.

Getting There

The Tohoku region is vast and comprises a huge chunk of the island of Honshu. With a JR East Tohoku Pass , you can explore the region through unlimited rides on the JR East railway for a period of 5 days. This includes the Shinkansen and local trains. This also includes the JR lines in Tokyo so if you plan to do a bit of exploring in the capital before/after your trip, you can do so with this pass. If you intend to visit the Tohoku region for a couple of days, I recommend getting this pass as there are quite a bit of train rides needed and it will end up cheaper than buying train tickets ala carte.

Day 1 – Hirosaki

For the first day, I suggest heading directly to the far north, starting from the Aomori prefecture, and gradually making your way south from there.

The largest city and capital of the Aomori prefecture is the namesake city of Aomori, but I would suggest making your way instead to the more laidback town of Hirosaki, just 40-minute train ride from Aomori itself.

hirosaki castle

hirosaki castle

The town of Hirosaki is noted for its beautiful cherry blossoms as well as autumn foliage. The Hirosaki Castle is often considered as one of the most beautiful in Japan.

mount iwaki as seen from hirosaki castle

mount iwaki as seen from hirosaki castle

This castle is a must-visit attraction in Hirosaki. It was built in 1611 and is surrounded by a moat and beautiful cherry blossom trees. The castle is open to the public and offers a great view of the city as well as of Mount Iwaki from the top.

early autumn colors in hirosaki castle grounds

early autumn colors in hirosaki castle grounds

If you come between late October to early November, you can also catch some spectacular autumn foliage from the park surrounding the moat and castle. I visited just a tad early when the leaves were only starting to turn red.

If time permits, head to Hirosaki Apple Park where you can have the chance to pick some of Aomori’s famed apples. Japan’s well-known Fuji apples actually come from Aomori prefecture rather than from the Mt Fuji area and you can pluck these famed fruits first-hand for a nominal fee.

Where to stay: I stayed in Dormy Inn Hirosaki which is within walking distance to the castle. The hotel also features a hot spring as well as free ramen in the evenings.

Where to eat: Unashin (うな新) is an old unagi restaurant located just two blocks away from Dormy Inn. The eels are freshly grilled on charcoal and are mildly sweet and incredibly fluffy.

noodles from ramen man

noodles from ramen man

If you are in Hirosaki during the colder months and prefer something soupy, Ramen Man serves delicious noodles. I would suggest going for the spicy miso for an added kick.

freshly baked apple pastry in aomori prefecture

freshly baked apple pastry in aomori prefecture

Another thing to try while you are in Aomori prefecture are the multitude of apple products. This can take the form of fresh apple juice, apple desserts and even apple cookies. I personally love their freshly-baked apple pies which you can easily get from the souvenir store in the train station.

Tip: If you travel multiple times a year, you may consider getting an annual travel insurance plan. Chubb Travel Insurance’s annual plan covers commonly visited Asia-Pacific countries such as Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Australia and Thailand, as well as other worldwide destinations. Find out more here

Day 2: Geibikei Gorge

For the second day, leave Hirosaki and take the shinkansen from Shin-Aomori to Ichinoseki, a good base for exploring the nearby sights of Geibikei Gorge and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed town of Hiraizumi.

Logistics-wise, it makes sense to have Ichinoseki as your base but in my case, I decided to spend the night in nearby Sendai where there are better lodging options.

geibikei gorge

geibikei gorge

From Ichinoseki, you can take the bus for a 40-minute ride to the incredibly scenic Geibikei Gorge. The gorge is known for its towering cliffs, translucent waters and scenic boat tours that allow visitors to explore the area in a unique way.

The tour itself lasts about 90 minutes and provides breathtaking views of the surrounding cliffs and waterfalls. Visitors can also hike along the riverbank and explore the various trails that lead to hidden waterfalls and scenic viewpoints.

boat ride in geibikei gorge

traditional boat ride in geibikei gorge

The boat will be rowed by a man wearing a traditional Japanese costume. Midway in the tour, he’ll also serenade passengers with a traditional song which adds to the special atmosphere of the boat ride.

After finishing the ride, take the bus and make your way back to Ichinoseki where you can spend the night, or you can do what I did and take the 30-minute shinkansen ride down to livelier Sendai.

daiwa roynet sendai nishiguchi

daiwa roynet sendai nishiguchi

Where to stay: The Daiwa Roynet Sendai Nishiguchi is a new hotel located just a block away from Sendai Station. Rooms are spacious and well-appointed with plush beddings. There’s a 7-11 and Starbucks conveniently located downstairs.

Day 3: Hiraizumi

If you had decided to stay in Sendai the previous night, you will need to backtrack a bit and take the shinkansen again to Ichinoseki. After reaching, connect to a local JR train to the small town of Hiraizumi.

Hiraizumi was once the political and cultural center of the Tohoku region during the 12th century. The town is home to several historical sites that have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Takkoku-no-Iwaya Bishamondo

Takkoku-no-Iwaya Bishamondo

One of the most picturesque places to visit in Hiraizumi is Takkoku-no-Iwaya Bishamondo . It is a temple carved directly into the rock face of a cliff, giving it a unique setting. The temple is dedicated to Bishamonten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Japan, and is a popular pilgrimage site for those seeking blessings for wealth and prosperity.

motsu-ji temple

motsu-ji temple

Another significant site is the Motsu-ji Temple , which was built in the 9th century. The temple was destroyed during a civil war in the 12th century but was later restored. The temple is known for its beautiful garden, which is considered one of the best examples of Japanese garden design.

As the temples are quite spread out, the best way to explore Hiraizumi is by bike. You can rent one just outside the station and there are options to rent either a traditional bike or an e-bike. Allow for half a day to fully explore the sights of Hiraizumi.

After finishing, go back to Ichinoseki and take the shinkansen to Koriyama, one of the main hubs of Fukushima prefecture and spend the night there or if time permits, you can head further inland to the more charming town of Aizu-Wakamatsu which requires an extra 1 to 1.5 hour of travelling by local train.

Where to stay: In Koriyama, the Daiwa Roynet Koriyama Station is conveniently located just next to the train station. In Aizu-Wakamatsu, the Higashiyama Onsen Mukaitaki is an atmospheric ryokan in a beautiful historic building.

Day 4: Aizu-Wakamatsu to Ouchijuku

Start the day by heading to the village of Ouichijuku, one of the most atmospheric traditional towns in Japan.

If you are coming from Koriyama, you will need to head to Aizu-Wakamatsu first which takes approximately 1.5 hours. If you spent the previous evening in Aizu-Wakamatsu, you can take one of the local trains to Yunokami Onsen and then take a short bus ride to the village.

ouichijuku

Ouchijuku is a beautifully preserved Edo-era post town. It was once a busy stop along the Aizu-Nishi Kaido trade route that connected Aizu with Nikko during the Edo Period. Today, Ouchijuku is a popular tourist destination that offers visitors a glimpse into Japan’s rich cultural heritage.

ouichijuku

Ouchijuku is known for its thatched-roof buildings and wooden storefronts that make for a wonderful view when surveyed from the viewing deck at the end of the village. Visitors can also see the town’s historic stone-paved streets, which date back to the Edo Period. The town’s historic post office, which is still in operation, is another popular attraction.

leek soba from ouichijuku

leek soba from ouichijuku

The village is also famous for its local delicacies, including soba noodles and grilled skewers of char-grilled, salted rice cakes known as “dango.” The town’s soba noodles are made from locally grown buckwheat and are known for their unique texture and flavour. They are meant to be eaten using a stick of leek as cutlery instead of chopsticks.

Ouichijuku can be explored in about 2 hours – 3 if you include lunch. After making your way back, you can take the shinkansen back to Tokyo for the night.

Travel Insurance

Medical expenses in Japan can be high so it’s best to get covered with travel insurance when visiting. Chubb offers travel insurance coverage, with overseas medical expenses benefit as well as unlimited coverage for emergency and repatriation, at a competitive price. The Chubb plans also include coverage for trip cancellation or curtailment, including due to COVID-19, loss of personal items or baggage, as well as coverage for travel delays of as little as 4 hours. Whereas most other insurance plans only give cash compensation for delays of 6 hours or more. Additionally, the Chubb travel insurance cover is customisable with optional add-on benefits (e.g. cancellation of overseas wedding photoshoots, skiing, adventurous sports etc.) to suit your travel needs. Tohoku Japan Travel Guide

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Tohoku (Japan)

Hello there – we are Sarah and Eric. Together we co-run Chopsticks on the Loose ( @chopsticksontheloose ) and work as travel photographers and content creators. Thanks for checking out our Tohoku, Japan travel guide.

We grew up in two different parts of the world. Sarah grew up in Hong Kong while Eric was born in the UK. Although Sarah later moved to the UK with her family. Our love of travel came from the desire to learn about cultures as well as capturing moments in time with photography .

It was in London at a friend’s birthday party that we met. The rest, as they say, was history. Chopsticks on the Loose came about a couple of years later when we decided to leave our 9-5 jobs behind and travel full-time.

The Instagram page and blog were originally a way for us to stay connected to our friends and family and to share what we were getting up to. It has now grown to a community of 22,000 followers and we couldn’t be happier.

Tohoku Japan Travel Guide

One Year Journey through Japan

We decided to spend a year in Japan to explore every region and experience all four seasons. We dubbed it the “Journey through Japan”.

After some helpful advice from locals, we made plans to visit the Tohoku region during autumn. We were told the northern region had some of the most impressive nature scenes. They were totally right about that.

We spent 8 days exploring Tohoku. Getting around this region is a little tricky using public transport as it’s less connected compared to other parts of Japan. This was especially true in the remote areas of Tohoku that we wanted to explore. In the end, we rented a car and went roadtrippin’ .

Takachiho Gorge

Favourite Place in Tohoku: Yamadera Temple

We spent most of our time in Tohoku out in nature. So there weren’t many opportunities for us to meet locals. Although the locals we did meet were all incredibly friendly. One thing to keep in mind is that people don’t speak English in this region as it’s an area less frequented by travellers.

Tohoku is a treasure trove of incredible places to visit. Our favourite place was Yamadera Temple which is a thousand-year-old temple situated on a steep mountainside. It’s a short hike to the top but it’s a magical experience, especially when the temple is surrounded by autumn leaves.

Tohoku, Japan Travel Guide: Top 10 Experiences

The Tohoku region is made up of six prefectures (Aomori, Akita, Fukushima , Iwate, Miyagi and Yamagata) in the north of Japan’s largest island. Tourists and Japanese are drawn to Tohoku for its beautiful countryside, mountains and lakes , hot springs, historical sights and culinary delights.

Below you can find our top 10 recommendations for this Tohoku, Japan travel guide:

1. See the Autumn Colours of Tohoku

Autumn is a special time of year in Tohoku as the region lights up in colour. The trees become so colourful that the mountains, forests and parks all glow with this fiery red and gold hue. Some of the best autumn destinations are Mount Hakkoda (Aomori) and Oyasu Ravine (Akita).

2. Visit the Scenic Yamadera Temple

As mentioned before, the Yamadera Temple is one of the most beautiful temples in all of Japan. The temple is located in the mountains northeast of Yamagata City and extends high up a steep mountainside. Its name “Yamadera” literally translates to “mountain temple” in Japanese.

3. Chase the Majestic Waterfalls of Tohoku

Tatsuzawafudo Falls and Akiu Waterfall are just two examples of stunning waterfalls in the Tohoku region. The former is located in Inawashiro Town and is made up of two waterfalls – Odaki (the male fall) and Medaki (the smaller female fall). The latter, Akiu is another beauty located in Sendai.

4. Take a Boat Ride at Geibikei Gorge

Geibikei is a 2km long gorge carved out by the Satetsu River in Iwate Prefecture. The gorge makes for an awesome boat ride experience. Sit back and relax as you float down this gorge while your boatman paddles and sings old folk songs. Cliffs here tower overhead at heights of 50-100 metres.

5. Discover the Former Post Town of Ouchijuku

Visiting Ouchijuku feels like you’ve been transported back to the Japan of olden times. This former post town was once situated along the Aizu-Nishi Kaido trade route. The architecture here is defined by thick-thatched roof buildings which house shops, restaurants and minshuku (traditional inns).

Ouchijuku

6. Explore the Secluded Town of Ginzan Onsen

Ginzan Onsen was one of the locations that inspired the Studio Ghibli movie Spirited Away. The town is a hot spring destination nestled in the mountains of Yamagata. It’s best known for its historic ryokan (traditional Japanese inns featuring tatami-matted rooms) lined along the river.

7. Stay at the Beautiful Obara Onsen

Obara Onsen was our favourite onsen in Japan. If you’re looking for a truly authentic onsen experience then this is it. The hot spring is nestled alongside the Shiroishi River. Its colourless and odourless waters are believed to have magical healing powers for the thousands of guests that visit each year.

8. Climb to the Okama Crater at Mount Zao

Mount Zao is one of the most impressive mountains in Tohoku standing at a height of 1840 metres. The mountain sits on the border between the Yamagata and Miyagi Prefectures. Near the summit of Mount Zao is the surreal crater lake Okama Crater which you can view from a distance.

9. Marvel at the Bhuddist Enzoji Temple

The Enzoji Temple is a Buddhist temple located in the small town of Yanaizu. This is the birthplace of the lucky red cow of Fukushima known as ‘Akabeko’. The heritage of this temple goes back over 1,200 years and was constructed in a similar style to the Buddhist Kiyomizudera temples in Kyoto with large balconies.

10. Visit the Goshikinuma Lakes in Autumn

This group of beautiful lakes in Fukushima come alive when the autumn foliage starts. Each lake displays its own distinctive colour due to the volcanic elements and minerals that were spawned when Mt. Bandai erupted over 100 years ago. These colours and hues change depending on the season you visit.

Tohoku, Japan Travel Guide: Culinary Treats

The food in Tohoku is spectacular just like most of Japan. However, there is one particular treat that you have to try. Dango is a popular sweet rice dumpling and in Tohoku you can find something called the Flying Dango!

At the Genbikei Gorge one shop has decided to install a rope which delivers Dango in a wooden basket to customers in the middle of the gorge. After putting your money in the basket which sits on a cable overhanging the gorge, you knock the wooden board and your order is ready to go.

Watch your basket get pulled up to the shop across the gorge and then wait until it comes flying back down with dango and tea inside. You can try one of three different types of flavours: goma (sesame), mitarashi (sweet soy sauce) and an (red bean paste).

It’s one awesome and delicious experience!

Funny Memories Bathing at Obara Onsen

Our favourite memory from our time in Tohoku would have to be bathing at Obara Onsen. The onsen is set in a cave with the river water naturally flowing in and out (hence why no soap is allowed here). The only people you’ll find there are friendly Japanese locals who love to chat.

Trying to communicate using only hand gestures to naked locals will be a memory we’ll never forget. Just thinking about it makes us laugh!

Tohoku, Japan Travel Guide: Tips for your Visit

Tohoku is a large region so it’s important to plan your visit before going. Otherwise you could find yourself spending more time travelling than experiencing the region. Since it’s a nature focused place, we’d also recommend timing your trip with a particular season that interests you.

The region is beautiful all year round and the activities you do and scenes you see may change depending on the time of year. For example, Okama Crater is not open during the winter season but you can still see the heavily snow-covered trees of Mount Zao (also known as snow monsters).

That’s it from us – the duo behind Chopsticks on the Loose. We hope you enjoyed reading our Tohoku Japan travel guide. Enjoy your travels!

Tohoku 7 Days Itinerary

Tohoku Shinkansen

Tohoku region is the north part of Japan, which consists of 6 prefectures; Aomori , Iwate , Miyagi , Akita , Yamagata and Fukushima prefecture. When you plan to travel to the Tohoku region, you may wonder how many days you will need to travel all the prefectures. In this article, we prepared a sample 7 days itinerary for your Tohoku trip which you can complete by using public transportations only; the itinerary starts from Fukushima and finishes at Miyagi prefecture to visit all 6 prefectures in 7 days.

How to travel to the Tohoku Region

Aizu-wakamatsu , hotels to stay in aizu wakamatsu , goshikinuma, hotels to stay near yamagata station , hotels to stay in ginzan onsen, hotels to stay near akita station , hotels to stay near aomori station , hotels to stay in ichinoseki , day 7 – miyagi , japan rail pass , japan wonder travel tours , other articles you might like.

Located north of Tokyo, the Tohoku region can easily be reached using the Tohoku Shinkansen. The bullet train stops at all the main station Sendai, Morioka or Aomori and from there you can travel into the region. Since April 2021, anyone with a foreign passport can purchase the JR East Pass Tohoku and take advantage of this opportunity to travel cheaper in the Tohoku region. This JR Pass let you travel for 5 consecutive days on all JR trains and Shinkansen covered. The pass costs ¥20,000 for adults and ¥10,000 for children (6-11 years old). You can buy the JR East Tohoku Pass online or purchase the ticket at the designated ticket machine at some stations (including Tokyo, Ueno, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Shinagawa, Yokohama, Mito, Narita Airport, Sendai, Yamagata, Fukushima, Morioka, Hachinohe, Aomori and Akita).

To explore the Tohoku Region more flexible, we recommend you to get a rental car at the location. This will give you much more freedom to discover the more remote areas where public transportation in the area is limited and infrequent. Driving in Japan is safe and easy, read more about the rules and more in our blog driving in Japan .

If you are not comfortable driving, you can still use the public transportation but bear in mind that the service is limited in the Tohoku area, so checking the train and bus schedule beforehand is essential. You wouldn’t want to end up having to wait for a couple of hours for the next trains. If you want to make it a slower trip, it is better to make it 10 days or 14 days, which also allows you to visit more places in the beautiful Tohoku region.

Day 1 – Fukushima (Ouchijuku and Aizu-Wakamatsu)

First destination is Ouchijuku in Fukushima .There are several ways to get there from Tokyo;

From Tokyo Station

  • Tokyo > Shin-Shirakawa Station (Tohoku-Hokkaido Shinkansen) > Take Aizu Bus to Ouchijuku
  • Tokyo (Tohoku Shinkansen) > JR Koriyama Station > JR Aizu Wakamatsu Station > Yunokami Onsen Station >Bus (Saruyu-go) > Ouchijuku

From Asakusa Station

  •  Asakusa Station (Tobu Line)> Shin-Fujiwara Station > Aizu Kogen Oseguchi Station> Yunokami Onsen Station > Bus (Saruyu-go) or taxi  > Ouchijuku

If you take a train around 9am, you will get to Ouchijuku around 12:30 pm. It is an old post town which prospered during the Edo period , where travelers took a rest and stayed overnight. Visit the museum to see the exhibition of pictures and tools such as the hearth and cooking stove which people used during the Edo period, and you can learn how people lived during that time in this area (admission fee: 250 yen). At Miharashidai , View Point, you can take the best picture over the traditional houses at Ouchijuku.

Ouchi juku Fukushima

Eat Negi soba for lunch, it looks like the ordinal soba noodles but actually here you use Negi (green onion) instead of chopsticks to eat!

Takakura Shrine is another place to visit in Ouchijuku. In the middle of the village, you will spot the first tall torii gate, but keep walking to pass the second torii, and you will enter the forest that leads to the main shrine. After a short walk alongside rice fields from Ouchijuku to Takakura Shrine, there stands a quiet shrine in the middle of the forest to relax.

Takakura Shrine

Around 2pm, leave Ouchijuku and head to Aizu-Wakamatsu. Take a bus to Yunokami Onsen Station and change to Aizu Tetsudo and get off at Aizu Wakamatsu Station. It will take about 30 minutes.

While Tsuruga Castle is always the best option to visit in Aizu-Wakamatsu, you can also visit Sazaedo temple built in 1796, which is known for the unique shape and the spiral staircase. Around the temple, there are historical sites related to the Byakkotai, which was a group of 300 teenage samurai of the Aizu Domain who fought in the Boshin War (1868-1869) . Their well-known tragic story is that 20 members of the Byakkotai spotted Tsuruga Castle engulfed in the black smoke from Mt.Iimori and they decided to commit the ritual suicide known as Seppuku . You can learn more stories of the Byakkotai at the museum and many tourists visit the gravesite to offer flowers to show their respect, which is only a 2 minutes walk from Sazaedo temple.

Day 2 – Fukushima (Goshikinuma)

On the second day, head to Goshikinuma , a cluster of ponds and lakes located in Bandai Plateau of Mt.Bandai, which attracts many tourists for so-called “mystic beauty” with the color of emerald green, cobalt blue, turquoise and pastel blue ponds.

In the morning around 10am, take JR Ban-Etsusai Line to Iwashiro Station from Aizu Wakamatsu Station, and then take a bus to Nagamine Funatsuki Bus Stop, the nearest bus stop to Goshikinuma. It will take about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Goshikinuma

Around 2:30 pm, take a bus from Nagamine Funatsuki to Inawashiro Station, and then take a Ban-Etsusai Line to Koriyama Station, and transfer to Yamagata Shinkansen to head to the next destination, Yamagata Station. It is a long journey (about 4 hours 15 minutes), so we recommend you to enjoy Ekiben on the Shinkansen ! Once you get there, check in to your hotel near Yamagata Station, and take a nice evening stroll and enjoy local foods and sake at Izakaya!

  • Yamagata Grand Hotel
  • CASA DE YOSHI
  • Hotel Castle

If you’re planning on strictly following our 7-day itinerary, you probably won’t have time on this trip, but we highly recommend seeing other parts of Fukushima, as it has so much to offer. You may hear the word Fukushima and be reminded of everything that happened in 2011. There are a lot of misconceptions that the area is still unsafe to visit, but this is not true. Explore the area on our 2-day Nuclear Power Plant and Disaster area tour , and you will find out the truth about everything, see how far they have come in the reconstruction process, and even have a chance to go into the nuclear power plant!

Day 3 – Yamagata

First thing in the morning, visit Yamadera . It takes only 15 minutes from Yamagata Station to Yamadera Station by JR Senzan Line. The official name of Yamadera is Hoshuyama Risshaku Temple, which is the Tendai Sect temple established in 860. Climb up 1,000 steps to the top of the mountain, a round trip will take about 1 hour to 1.5 hour to complete.

Hoshuyama Risshaku Temple Yamadera

Around noon, head back to Yamagata Station and head to Ginzan Onsen , the traditional hot spring town which is naturally the best place to stay on your Tohoku trip! Take Yamagata Shinkansen to Oishida Station, or if you prefer taking the local line, you can take JR Senzan Line from Yamadera Station and get off at Uzen Chitose Station, and change to Yamagara Line to Oishida Station. It takes about an hour either way. You can take a bus from Oishida Station to Ginzan Onsen (40 minutes).

  • Notoya Ryokan

Day 4 – Akita

After having a relaxing evening at onsen hot spring, head to the third prefecture on the itinerary; Akita. From Oishida Station, take Yamagata Shinkansen to Shinjo Station, and then transfer to JR Ou Line and get off at Yokote Station. After about a 3 hours train ride, you will finally be in Akita prefecture.

Let’s explore around the Yokote area for a couple of hours before heading to Kakunodate Samurai District . You can choose from Yokote Park, Akita Museum of Modern Art and Akita Furusato Village for your local experience. During winter, this area is famous for Kamakura snow hut , and you can see the exhibition of snow huts at Kamakura-kan all year round.

Yokote Snow Festival

At 2pm, take Akita Shinkansen to Omagari Station and then transfer to Shimonobu Line to Kakunodate Station. You can either walk for 15 minutes or take a bus to Yokomachi-Jumonji to the Samurai District, which used to be a castle town during the Edo period . You can visit actual Samurai Houses, and if you rent a kimono and take a rickshaw ride, it’ like traveling back in time. In spring about 400 beautiful weeping cherry trees will welcome many visitors!

After 6pm, take Akita Shinkansen from Kakunodate Station to Akita Station, eat Kiritanpo for dinner around the station, and then take a rest at the hotel.

Day 5 – Aomori

Wake up early and be ready for a long train ride to Aomori today. Around 8:30 am, take JR Ou Line to Owani Onsen Station, and then walk to Owani Station to get a Konan Tetsudo-Owani Line to Chuo Hirosaki Station. After about 4 hours of travel, you can finally visit Hirosaki Castle , one of the 12 original castles in Japan .

Hirosaki Castle

After spending a couple of hours exploring Hirosaki Castle it’s time to head to Aomori Station in the afternoon. Take Konan Tetsudo-Owani Line at Chuohirosaki Station to Ginjukukodo-Mae Station, and then walk to Ishikawa Station to take JR Ou Line to get to Aomori Station (~1.5 hours). You can’t leave Aomori without learning about the Nebuta Festival at Nebuta Museum WA RASSE , one of the biggest summer festivals in Japan , during summer time it opens until 7pm (May-Sep). And for souvenir gift shopping and trying local sweets, stop by A-FACTORY near the museum.

Day 6 – Iwate

At 9:30 am, head to Aomori Station and take JR Ou Line to Shin Aomori Station, and then transfer to Tohoku-Hokkaido Shinkansen and get off at Hiraizumi Station. Around 1 pm, you finally get to the destination, and begin to explore around Hiraizumi area in Iwate prefecture. Once you get off at the station, and wonder what you should do, you can visit the tourist information center situated right in front of the station. They will kindly show you the best spots to visit in the Hiraizumi area which is full of historical sites and treasures dating back to the Heian Period (794-1185) .

Chusonji-temple Iwate

Chusonji temple is a must-visit place, which is registered on the World Heritage Sites. The main hall is located on the top of the hill, you can enjoy a pleasant hike among the beautiful old cedar trees which are easily over 300 years old. Chusonji has preserved over 3,000 cultural properties including Konjikido, which is a hall covered in gold built in 1124. When you get hungry, try Wanko Soba which is an all-you-can-eat style of soba noodles which originated in Iwate. Yoshiie is the soba restaurant serving Wanko Soba conveniently located on the way to the temple.

At 5pm, it’s time to head to the hotel. Walk back or take a local bus to Hiraizumi Station, take JR Tohoku Line to Ichinoseki Station. About 30 minutes later, you will arrive at Ichinoseki Station, where visitors can enjoy the remains of the old castle town during the Edo period. If time permits, you can walk around the station to visit the old samurai house and the sake museum which was renovated from sake brewery, where you can enjoy the local beer and sake.

The last day of your Tohoku trip has come. It’s only 30 minutes away from Ichinoseki Station to Sendai Station by Tohoku-Hokkaido Shinkansen. Sendai in Miyagi prefecture is the largest city of the Tohoku region. When you get to Sendai Station in the morning, head to Sendai Asaichi , the lively morning market which is only 5 minutes away from the station. There are about 70 small shops lined up selling fresh seafood, fruits and vegetables etc. Visit Shoke for breakfast, they offer some fresh sushi bowls for ¥500 with small plates and miso soup.

sendai

It’s a good idea to visit the historical sites such as Aoba Castle(Sendai Castle) and Zuihoden , or you can make a short trip to Matsushima for the scenic view of the Matsushima Bay. Read The Best Things to Do in Sendai to get more ideas!

Going back to Tokyo is pretty easy from Sendai Station, 1.5 hours ride on Shinkansen and then you are back to Tokyo Station. Don’t forget to buy the Gyutan Ekiben to savor the taste of Sendai’s specialty on the Shinkansen on the way home!

When planning your trip in the Tohoku region for a longer period of time or traveling to other regions as well, consider the Japan Rail Pass too. If you are an international traveler (not applicable for foreign residents), this pass helps you to save a lot of money. The Japan Rail Pass, or commonly referred to as JR Pass, is the most economical means of travelling throughout Japan, especially for long distance train travel. The pass can be used by anyone visiting Japan on a short-term tourist visa only and offers unlimited use of transportation offered by the JR Group.
