Travel + Leisure / Alli Waataja

Though the housebound days of 2020 are behind us, athleisure and the all-day-every-day sports bra life left a lasting impression. Sports bras range from low-impact shelf styles perfect for sitting around to maximum-compression models for high-impact workouts. As most of us know, the benefits and comfort of a well-fitting bra are as extreme as the discomfort of a poor-fitting one. The wrong sports bra can cause chafing, bouncing, back pain, and neck strain. This goes for anyone from casual athletes to avid runners, travelers, yogis … or even those of us sitting on our couch playing The New York Times word games.

“Breasts are partly secured to the chest wall by rather weak strands of connective tissue that can be overstretched if breasts are not supported adequately,” explains LaJean Lawson, Ph.D., a sports bra science, design, and marketing guru. She told Travel + Leisure that proper support can help prevent damage and maintain breast shape over time. That’s why matching your support level with the intensity of your activity is key, especially where high-impact workouts are concerned.

We recommend looking for a model with comfortable, durable fabric, wide straps to avoid digging into skin, a cross-back design for added support, molded cups, and wicking properties.

Best Overall

Brooks crossback run bra 2.0.

Brooks Running

The seamless design and combination of support and sweat-wicking makes this a top pick for everyday and athletic wear.

The material is sleek but the design is wide, so there’s no hiding this bra under smaller tank tops, and it only goes up to an E cup.

This encapsulation-style bra has a seamless design, supportive cups that don’t pinch or create pressure around the chest, and light compression below the bustline. You can sweat all day in this and not notice thanks to Brooks’ DriLayer HorsePower fabric, which wicks moisture without retaining any heaviness in the material. The body-mapped perforation allows airflow without compromising material durability, and even though it doesn’t have adjustments on the straps or chest band, it doesn’t get stretched or saggy and retains its shape really well over the course of dozens of wears.

I wore this sports bra for a 500-mile backpacking trip, and it never lost its shape or support. The odor resistance is also top-notch, with antimicrobial properties that work in conjunction with the sweat-wicking to keep you comfortable, cool, and stink-free. This bra is comfortable for all-day wear, but it can also hold up to high-impact workouts like bouncy runs. It’s just an excellent all-around pick that I recommend for people with a wide range of chest sizes and shapes.

The Details: 63 percent nylon, 37 percent elastane | 30-40 band, A-E cups | Moderate-to-high impact | Five colors

Best Low Impact

Smartwool intraknit strappy bra.

The Intraknit construction is seamless and super smooth.

The length of this bra can make it feel a little tight, so consider sizing up if you’re between sizes.

I'm a longtime fan of Smartwool’s Intraknit manufacturing method, which eliminates waste from cuttings of different sections and means each item has body-mapped reinforcements and extra support without seams. The sports bra from the Intraknit line has all of the above, with soft, fine-knit merino next-to-skin paired with a supportive outer layer that keeps everything in place without too much pressure or compression. The lining combines merino with Tencel, which adds to the softness and enhances the moisture management. This is a slightly longer design that can be worn as a crop top or just a comfortable all-day bra. It does have removable pads, and if you want to get rid of all the extra material, the bra still provides enough coverage without them.

The Details:   44 percent nylon/polyester, 20 percent merino, 20 percent lyocell, 15 percent elastane | XS-L | Low impact | Six colors

Best High Impact

Lume six cirra high impact sports bra.

There are lots of options for fit fine-tuning with different band and cup sizes.

People with larger breasts might find the top-to-bottom coverage lacking.

This small company makes one of the lightest sports bras out there, with minimal material and top-notch wicking. LumeSix uses an airy polyester blend with a unique reinforcement in the diamond-shaped structure, and their band lies flat even during periods of high movement. It’s more of a minimal design than others on this list, but still feels supportive and provides ample coverage despite the thin fabric. We’re big fans of the sizing options with extended sizes in the chest and band, and the option to create your perfect combo of band and cup. This works well for bodies of many shapes and sizes, but we have found the vertical coverage to be a bit too minimal for larger breasts, and we’d consider sizing up next time to ensure the best fit.

The Details: 80 percent polyester, 20 percent elastane | XS-XXXL plus mixed band and cup sizing | Moderate-to-high impact | Six colors

Best For Large Breasts

Panache underwired sports bra.

The molded cups offer more shape than standard compression bras.

The dual closure offers additional adjustability and support, but it can be kind of a hassle.

Panache’s dual closures offer more precise fit and support, and while this bra looks complicated, it’s really just a racerback with some extra closure options. We like encapsulation styles for high-impact bras (especially for larger breasts) as compression designs can put too much pressure around our chests and make workouts harder. The molded cups here offer enough support for HIIT-style workouts without painful bounce, but they have just enough compression through the bands to complement the encapsulation. The shoulder straps are nicely cushioned and the closures can be adjusted throughout the day based on how much support you want.

The Details: 49 percent nylon, 36 percent polyester, 15 percent elastane | 32B-40GG | High impact | 35 colors

Best for Small Breasts

Prana heavana every day bra.

The material feels incredibly soft against your skin.

You might want more top-to-bottom coverage for actual yoga classes.

This luxurious-feeling material is part of Prana’s new super soft Heavana line, with a silky-smooth heathered fabric that doesn’t feel slick but also doesn’t grab or catch like a knit or terry. With enough support for low-to-moderate workouts and a slightly padded material, this shelf bra with removable cups is great for people with small breasts who don’t need true encapsulation or molded cups, but want something more than basic flattening. The bra features Prana’s fun, strappy design that looks cute on its own or under a racerback tank, and it comes in a range of muted earth tones. Pro tip: get the matching yoga pants . You won't be sorry.

The Details: 87 percent polyester, 13 percent elastane | XS-L | Moderate impact | Five colors

Best Front Zip

Lululemon enlite zip front bra.

The front-zipper closure eliminates the sweaty post-workout bra peel.

The zipper can be a bit of a battle to secure, but once it’s in place it stays zipped.

This is one of the most supportive bras I’ve ever tested. It’s comfortable in a wide range of sizes for high-impact activities. Along with a lot of support through the back, the Enlite’s wide straps lie flat against your skin, and the cross-back design adds more support for people with larger chests. This bra combines molded cups with compression for a cross between a typical compression bra and an encapsulation model, helping nail the high-impact comfort without feeling too constricting. The front zip is a total game changer when it comes to trying to wrestle a sweaty bra off after a workout. No more peeling and wiggling … just unzip the sturdy front zipper and be done. This is another wicking, breathable bra with a high level of elastane for support and shape retention.

The Details:   56 percent nylon, 44 percent elastane | 30C-40E | High impact | One color

Best Adjustability

Under armour infinity limitless high sports bra.

Under Armour

The adjustable cross-straps can provide more support for high-impact workouts.

This bra will feel too compressive for all-day wear.

This is one of Under Armor’s most supportive high-impact sports bras. The tradeoff is that you have a lot of material around your chest, but for athletes looking for a high level of compression, this is a reliable and secure option. It does have some variation in compression levels from the adjustability through the cross-strap length and back clasps, so you can tighten or loosen depending on needs, but this is a high-volume compression model, so it’s built to fit tightly against your body. The majority of the materials use Under Armour’s HeatGear technology, which is temperature regulating and wicking, and the padding is PU injected for smooth one-piece molding.

The Details:   87 percent polyester, 13 percent elastane | XS-3XL | High impact | 13 colors

Best with Pockets

Tracksmith allston bra.

Tracksmith

The embedded pockets hold a phone, key, and snacks. For real!

Tracksmith next-to-skin layers can feel small, so consider sizing up.

In the past year we’ve seen a delightful development with a range of bras that come with pockets, either along the racerback or in the actual sides of the bra. Since plenty of us are already using sports bras to hold our phones and other small items, this seemed like a natural next step. This version from Tracksmith comes with a pocket between the outer material and the bra lining, which I’ve used for a phone, a car key, and two energy gels, all without being bothered by the extra gear and still being able to do my workouts and walk around town without hassle. This is a compression-style bra that resists stretching and becoming misshapen, and it dries well and provides plenty of support for runs and hikes.

The Details:   57 percent nylon, 43 percent elastane | XS-L | Moderate impact | Four colors

Best Budget

Champion infinity racerback sports bra.

The simple pullover style is a nice break from clasps and adjustments.

The lower elastane percentage means it loses some shape between washes.

While we love our bras from high-end brands, there’s a lot to be said for apparel categories where the affordable version works just as well … and sports bras are one of those categories. This bra has a smooth construction without itching or chafing, and moderate support that feels comfortable for hiking trips and jogging but also isn’t miserable to wear all day sitting around. This is a pullover style, which a lot of people prefer for the ease and reduced material for potential itching, and it has a low level of elastane that makes it comfortable for wearing all day, plus perforated mesh lining for more ventilation.

The Details: 96 percent nylon, 4 percent elastane | XS-XL | Moderate impact | Five colors

Best Athleisure

Vuori stride bra.

The split-strap racerback style is a unique lifestyle take on this look.

The chest band can occasionally roll over onto itself.

Paired with the matching tights in a slew of 2024’s updated colorways, this sleek sports bra looks as cute walking around town as it does while lifting weights or considering your life choices in Reformer Pilates. Without any of the bulk and extra adjustments of a more techy bra, this bra is streamlined and soft to the touch, with an updated lining blend with 11 percent elastane — right in the mid-range of compression and comfort. Like other moderate-support bras, this can be worn for running and hiking, though people with larger breasts might want more support.

The Details: 70 percent nylon, 30 percent elastane | XS-XL | Moderate impact | Two colors

Best for Running

On performance bra.

Backcountry

The supportive molded cups and high neckline help reduce bounce.

If the bra is super tight, the cutout in the back might look … unflattering.

With molded cups, stretchy face and lining fabric, and top-notch wicking ability, this is our choice for runs of all lengths and efforts, from the dreaded tempo run to leisurely jogs on your local trails. On calls this a “medium-impact” model, but from my testing, it holds up quite well during high-impact workouts, keeping everything tight against my body and with enough top-to-bottom coverage that nothing is spilling out of the top thanks to the high neckline. My only gripe with this bra is the cutout in the back, which can have an unflattering effect if the bra is tight.

The Details: 65 percent nylon, 35 percent elastane | XS-XL | Moderate-to-high impact | Eight colors

Best Longline Sports Bra

Tentree inmotion longline active bra.

The cut is smooth and flattering as both a bra or crop top.

This bra doesn’t have a ton of bounce support, so skip the jump roping.

This long-line sports bra fits like a longer crop top with a built-in shelf bra and sturdy elastic that holds its shape well and provides enough support and coverage for wearing on its own or during light workouts. It’s smooth and flattering, with a full back and soft straps that pair nicely under wide-strap tank tops. The bra wicks sweat and resists odor buildup, and it has enough lining without extra padding for coverage without bulk. This is also a bra you can feel good about — TenTree manufactures their gear in a closed-loop process that helps divert waste from landfills, and they also plant ten trees (hence the name) for every purchase.

The Details: 79 percent polyester, 21 percent elastane | XS-XL | Low impact | 10 colors

Tips for Buying a Sports Bra

Decide on an impact level.

There’s no shame in wearing a sports bra for … everything. Most of the time they’re just more comfortable than standard bras! But sports bras are designed for a huge range of activity levels, and most bras will designate whether they’re built for low, medium, or high-impact workouts. A high-impact sports bra (think HIIT classes or hard runs) will have more coverage, extra support through the bands and straps, and often tighter compression than other types.

Sports bras for lower-impact activities (yoga, dog walks, mat pilates) will have less compressive materials, a less constricting fit, and will often feel more comfortable for all-day wear.  Lawson advises acquiring a variety of sports bra styles ranging from light support to -bounce-banning style for treadmill sprints.

Know the difference between compression and encapsulation

The two main styles of sports bras are compression and encapsulation. A compression-style sports bra is built with a higher percentage of spandex that helps prevent bouncing by holding (compressing) your breasts close to your body. Lawson recommends people with small or medium breasts wear compression bras during high-impact activities, while people with larger cup sizes will feel most comfortable in them during moderate or lower-impact activities, and Catherine Moloznik, VP of Purchasing and Merchandising at Fleet Feet says “One type of support is not better than the other — it’s really a matter of personal preference.”

Encapsulation styles are built with individual cups for each breast, more like a standard bra. They often have more specific sizes with band and cup options like you’ll see in traditional bras. “Features like molded cups, underwires, and contouring help separate and support each of the ‘girls’ individually for enhanced support and shaping,” Lawson says.

Choose breathable and lightweight materials

Exercise creates sweat, and no one feels comfortable with clammy, sticky dried sweat against their skin. Buying a wicking, breathable, lightweight sports bra is just as important as having those features in your workout clothes, especially since a sports bra sits right over some of your key heat and sweat zones — between your breasts and along your back. Performance fabrics are made to draw sweat away from your skin for a feel-dry workout, which is why some people  steer clear of sports bras with wide racerbacks that cover most of your upper spine. Instead look for narrower mesh racerbacks, ventilating keyholes above the waistband, and conventional U-back strap designs to keep your back cooler and drier, advises Lawson.

The goal is to find a supportive bra that moves with you, but minimally enough that it doesn’t rub and create friction … all without the suffocation of a tight band or pinch points. You should be able to fit two fingers flat beneath the bands on your shoulders and around your chest, and the cups or front panels should fit smoothly against your breasts without spilling over the top and sides.

“Purchasing the wrong fitting bra leads to a higher likelihood you will experience chafing and overall discomfort," says Moloznik. “It’s also important to find the right style sports bra for your body and needs.”

Finding the right size does take some measuring and often a bit of trial and error with different models. Moloznik recommends going to your local running store to be fit for the right size sports bra, which may differ from your daily bra size because sizing can be inconsistent among brands and styles.

She also recommends getting sized every few years because weight loss/gain, pregnancy, fluctuations in hormones, and muscle loss/gain can all make a difference in your bra size.

You can store your sports bras in your underwear drawer, just make sure they’re clean and dry before folding and stashing them. Avoid crumpling and stuffing them into corners like you (maybe) do with socks. Keep them folded or rolled nicely to avoid creasing the bands, and make sure any clasps are laid flat and clasped shut before storing.

While you can throw your sports bras in with your laundry, we recommend a gentle cycle and cold water to avoid negative effects on the elastane and structure. If you’re doing a load of underwear on its own, that’s a good time to throw the sports bras in. If you want to go the extra mile and hand wash them, soak the bras in soapy water for 30 minutes and then scrub the fabric with your hands and nothing abrasive. Rinse with cold water until the water runs clear and hang to dry.

“While there isn't anything wrong with wearing a sports bra every day, it is important to change out of your sports bras after exercising or sweating,” says Moloznik. “Bacteria can build up in the fabric, which may lead to odor, discomfort and other unwanted effects.”

Additionally, people with sensitive skin may want to avoid wearing sports bras outside of exercise, as the tight fabric may irritate the skin.

Travel + Leisure Co. and Sports Illustrated launch new resort brand for college towns

Cameron Sperance

Bama Rush is no longer just for TikTok.

Travel + Leisure Co. , the membership travel brand formerly known as Wyndham Destinations , is rolling out a new offering for college sports fans who want game day to last from check-in through checkout.

The membership travel offering acquired the rights to Sports Hospitality Ventures LLC, which is the hotel and resort licensee for the Sports Illustrated brand. Travel + Leisure Co. plans to leverage that into a new brand that will offer a full-service hotel, vacation club and residential condos at each "campus" in popular college towns with devoted fan bases.

The new brand offering is slated to open its first project in Tuscaloosa, Alabama — home to the University of Alabama — in late 2025.

"What I'm more excited about is the passion that's in Tuscaloosa is in college towns all over the United States," said Michael Brown, president and CEO of Travel + Leisure Co., in an interview with TPG ahead of the launch. "This is not going to be a one-and-done. It's going to be a network that we're looking forward to expanding in the future."

#BamaRush to check-in

The first of the company's planned college town resorts will be across the Black Warrior River from the University of Alabama. Why Tuscaloosa? The membership travel brand's namesake magazine calls it one of the leading college towns in the U.S., and the University of Alabama has been on the cover of Sports Illustrated a whopping 41 times — more than any other university.

"There's a lot more to that story and we're going to celebrate former athletes, current athletes, coaches in the history and the legacy that is in each of these college towns," Brown said.

Renderings show guest rooms with sports-influenced design and plenty of amenities, ranging from go-kart racing to swimming pools and batting cages.

Beyond Tuscaloosa, each Sports Illustrated Resorts college town resort is expected to feature branded, property-specific attractions, live-action sports and entertainment, dining and wellness facilities. Renderings show the sports and entertainment venue has the working title "Field of Dreams," but Brown indicated that could change to something more location-specific depending on the college town.

Expect the Tuscaloosa location of Sports Illustrated Resorts to feature 125 to 150 hotel rooms, around 200 vacation club units and 60 to 75 condos. Given the enthusiasm toward colleges in the Power Five conferences — the Southeastern Conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big Ten Conference, the Big 12 Conference and the Pac-12 Conference — it's easy to think about who might consider purchasing a condo at a Sports Illustrated Resort.

"Because we're talking about the University of Alabama, let's talk about the SEC: The alumni demand and market is clearly out there," Brown said.

We'll be sorely disappointed if the grand opening party in 2025 doesn't get a "#BamaRush" theme.

The future of Sports Illustrated Resorts

Future locations are in the works for the college town division of Sports Illustrated Resorts and will be announced shortly. Brown indicated the plan is to announce several more by year's end, saying "we're well down the path with many."

While Brown didn't provide specific locations for future resorts, it's likely safe to look to colleges with major football and athletic programs as leading contenders for where Travel + Leisure Co. will expand next.

The new brand will focus on college and university towns, but the broader Sports Illustrated resort portfolio will also have locations in leisure destinations that also include beach clubs at those resorts.

The Sports Illustrated Resorts Cap Cana location in the Dominican Republic location is now open and was even a backdrop to the 2023 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. An additional location in Orlando is expected to open next year.

sports travel leisure

"People are seeking differentiated experiences that allow them to be more active and participatory, and Sports Illustrated Resorts are delivering the ultimate experiences for guests through the hospitality destinations we are creating," Christopher Schroeder, CEO of Sports Hospitality Ventures LLC, said in a statement .

It's too early in the development process for the leadership team to provide specific rate expectations for the new brand. But the Sports Illustrated tie-in, coupled with the lack of experiential products like this in many college markets, means it's almost certain the company will be able to charge more per night in the towns and cities they expand to.

"We're entering these markets with the objective of tying the university with the college athletic experience with the iconic brand like Sports Illustrated," Brown said. "Built with that as the mindset, not as an afterthought of 'We need to build a hotel room,' accordingly, I would think that the brand [and the] experience in connection with the universities would drive premium yield, whether it's residential, vacation club or hotels."

Sports Illustrated Resorts are coming to the US, starting in Tuscaloosa, Alabama

sports travel leisure

Travel + Leisure has partnered with Sports Illustrated to introduce future sports-themed resorts and lifestyle complexes in popular college towns, after acquiring the rights to the vacation ownership business of Sports Hospitality Ventures, LLC.

The Sports Illustrated Resort plans to open the first of its kind in Tuscaloosa across the Black Warrior River from the University of Alabama by the end of 2025. The venture opened its first property last year in Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic, with activities including golf, scuba diving, sportfishing, biking, hiking and water sports.

The Tuscaloosa location is expected to feature a full-service hotel, vacation ownership club, residential condos, wellness center, dining, and entertainment options. Tuscaloosa was chosen as the site of the first-ever resort of its kind due to its recognition by Travel + Leisure as one of the top 25 best college towns in the United States.

This unique resort theme will provide Tuscaloosa guests access to almost 70 years of Sports Illustrated content, as stated in the press release .

Additional college town destinations are expected to be announced in the near future as work begins on the planned Tuscaloosa resort campus.

These Are the Top Airbnbs for Golf Lovers — and Each Has Its Own Private Course

Free golf all day long.

Love to golf but hate getting stuck behind others? At these Airbnbs, crowds won't be a problem, because they have private courses.

Honey Pond in Middletown Springs, Vermont, isn't just a vacation home — it's a full-blown recreational retreat. Its USGA-rated golf course includes three greens, multiple fairways, and 26 tees, not to mention a halfway house for mid-round drinks and snacks and eight golf carts to zip you around. It also has a driving range to help you perfect your swing.

Of course, that's far from the only amenity here. The house itself impresses with eight bedrooms, a gym, a wine cellar, a patio with a wood-burning pizza oven, and a game room with a pool table, shuffleboard, and pinball. And then there are the 545-acre grounds, which are home to much more than the golf course. There are 10 miles of hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing trails to explore, plus resort sports like croquet, corn hole, bocce, horseshoes, and tennis (with equipment included!).

Then across the country, in Scottsdale, Arizona, there's Saguaro Point . The property itself is a touch smaller than Honey Pond — just 5.1 acres — but it includes a private golf complex with three greens with multiple hole configurations plus a putting green (and three golf carts, too). With sunshine all year long in Scottsdale, you can take advantage of this synthetic course no matter when you visit.

As for the house, it's an eight-bedroom stunner with a four-car garage converted into a game room with a golf simulator, pool table, and ping pong, as well as a bar and a TV for all the games. Other highlights include indoor-outdoor living spaces, a pool, and a wet sauna in the master suite.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the cost of these Airbnbs is, well, not cheap. Golf can be a very expensive sport, after all! Honey Pond starts at $4,143 per night , and Saguaro Point starts at $3,900 per night .

New York native Cole Brauer, 29, became the first American woman ever to sail solo non-stop around the world on Thursday. Brauer placed second out of 16 sailors who competed in the Global Solo Challenge, a solo circumnavigation race that started in A Coruña, Spain, with participants from 10 countries. Brauer was the only female and the youngest.

“I can’t believe it, guys. I sailed around the world,” Brauer said as she approached the finish line in an Instagram live video. “That’s crazy. That’s absolutely crazy. This is awesome. Let’s just do it again. Let’s keep going!”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by SAIL magazine (@sailmagazine)

Brauer arrived in A Coruña, Spain, on Thursday after a treacherous 130-day journey past the three great capes: Africa's Cape of Good Hope, Australia's Cape Leeuwin and South America's Cape Horn. Brauer traveled 27,711 nautical miles on board "First Light," a 40-foot monohull sailboat, and documented her journey on Instagram.

The skipper shared the ups and downs of her journey on social media, from her on-board workouts to an injury she sustained in December. Brauer was thrown across her boat and injured a rib when the boat inadvertently changed direction in rough seas near Africa. "Never lose respect for the ocean," she said. "That's for sure."

She was even prepared for holidays spent alone at sea, with pumpkin decorations for Halloween, a small Christmas tree and a bottle of bubbly for New Year's.

"I grew up on a nature preserve, wandering through the tall grass of the creek and playing in the mud watching the tide come in," Brauer told Global Solo Challenge. "I spent a lot of time alone exploring nature. I was fascinated with clouds, animal bones, and watching the weather roll by."

Toward the end of her circumnavigation, Brauer said her boat was "deteriorating." During the final week, she shared that "horrendous conditions" were causing serious problems on board.

"On top of all the slamming, there is a lot of water inside the boat; I have now started to use the electric pump to pump out water every 6-10 hours," she wrote on Instagram. She described making "raincoats" out of Ziplock bags to protect the autopilot and the rudder bearing, "but it's not enough."

"I at least know the issues and what are the worse case scenarios and I am monitoring this and making sure that I keep these areas as dry as I can," she wrote.

But it all worked out in the end, as she informed organizers of the Global Solo Challenge that she was deliberately slowing down ahead of her arrival, to pull into the finish line at first light on First Light.

“Amazing finish!!!! So stoked! Thank you to everyone that came together and made this process possible,” she wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of her waving to flares to mark the end of her journey.

Brauer said she hopes to show the world that a male-dominated sport and community can become more open and less traditional.

"This is changing a mindset that has been set in stone by many boat clubs, yacht clubs, and people (women and men). I will be fighting against the constant sexual, verbal, and physical harassment for not just myself but for the Corinthian and Professional women sailors in this sport. As professional sailors, we have been fighting for many years for equal pay (we are paid significantly less than a man in the same position), we are harassed by teammates, owners, clients, race organizers, and many others in this community. Just as well as this community has built me up it has broken me and my fellow female teammates down. I am doing this race for them."

French sailor Philippe Delamare won the Global Solo Challenge on Feb. 24. He started the race about a month before Brauer and completed his circumnavigation in 147 days and one hour.

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

attractions elektrostal photo

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.

sights of the electric steel of the Moscow region

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrostal attractions photo with description

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.

Elektrostal attractions

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.

Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968

But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.

It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.

attractions of the city of Elektrostal

In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.

Elektrostal attractions

Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.

Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

sports travel leisure

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

sports travel leisure

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

sports travel leisure

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

sports travel leisure

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

sports travel leisure

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

British Airways owner IAG posts record profits on leisure travel boom

British Airways owner International Airlines Group (IAG) has revealed record annual profits after cashing in on resurgent travel demand, including from leisure travellers booking premium economy, and business class seats.

Underlying operating profits at the group, which also includes Iberia, Vueling and Aer Lingus , more than doubled to £3bn for 2023, higher than its previous pre-pandemic peak in 2019.

The chief executive, Luis Gallego, shrugged off the impact of the recession in the UK on demand, saying it “continues to be very strong, particularly in leisure”.

“We don’t see any weakness in the market,” he added.

However, the group admitted poor performance from BA at its London Heathrow hub, where only 60 per cent of flights departed or arrived within 15 minutes of schedule during 2023.

“As a result, significant resources have been invested to drive better performance and some early initiatives are now starting to deliver improvement,” IAG said in its results presentation .

Business travel has been slow to bounce back, but has been offset by leisure travellers booking premium seats, it said.

Capacity for the final three months of 2023 was at 98.6 per cent of the levels seen before the pandemic struck in 2019, with full-year capacity at 95.7 per cent of those levels. It expects to grow overall capacity by around 7 per cent in 2024.

Mr Gallego said: “In 2023, IAG more than doubled its operating margin and profits compared to 2022… recovering capacity to close to pre-Covid 19 levels in most of its core markets.”

He remained tight-lipped on the outlook for airfares this year, saying only that they would be “determined by the market”.

Corporate passenger demand in North America was impacted at the end of last year and into the first quarter of 2024 by the Gaza conflict and concerns over instability in the Middle East.

But demand in the US market was showing signs of recovery in the second and third quarters.

IAG also claimed it will spend £7bn overall on BA over the next three years on areas such as IT – after a string of systems-related operational meltdowns – and new aircraft.

“British Airways is our biggest asset with huge potential and that’s the reason we are investing,” Mr Gallego said.

On-time performance for BA at Heathrow improved to almost 80 per cent in January, IAG said, thanks to “integrated planning, ongoing recruitment and training and better performance management”.

It also said: “A new operating model for London Heathrow will be rolled out for the summer.”

IAG Loyalty, its reward business which oversees its frequent flyer currency, Avios, also recorded a record operating profit of £280m up 17 per cent year-on-year and 59 per cent higher than 2019.
