The city of Berhampur and its nearby places are dotted with several temples which you can easily visit. While some temples are right within the city limit, other shrines are also not very far and are less than 35 kilometres from Berhampur. Some of the temples which you must visit are Taratarini Temple, Budhi Thakurani Temple, Dhabaleswar Temple, Siddha Bhairavi Temple and Lord Siddhi Vinayaka Temple. Let’s begin with Taratarini shrine.

Taratarini Adi Shakti Pitha

The first destination for most of the visitors after reaching Berhampur is Taratarini Temple . The shrine is a holy site for Hindus located near Berhampur in Odisha. The place is at a distance of about 32 kms from the city centre near Purusottampur..

The Taratarini Temple is on the banks of the River Rishikulya and sits atop the Kumari hills, which has a height of approximately 708ft. It is one of the most ancient and one of the four Adi Shakti Peetha s in India.  Goddess Sati’s breasts are said to have fallen on the place where the temple now stands. Tara and Tarini are the presiding deities. They reside in the temple as two stones adorned with exquisite decorations and designed to resemble the two goddesses.

The temple that you now see is a new one that has replaced the old concrete temple of the British era. The present temple is a unique modern temple structure bearing complicated carvings. The temple construction follows the traditional Kalinga temple architecture or the Rekha architecture style and is quite similar to Sri Jagannath Temple in Puri and Lingaraj temple of Bhubaneswar. Horizontal and parallel lines bear characteristics of this kind of architecture. It has been built at a cost of around Rs. 2.50 crores as per the architectural norms of ancient Orissa temple architecture. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the newly built temple three days ago (18th May 2022, Wednesday).

Maa Budhi Thakurani Temple

Thakurani shrine stands in the Big Bazzar area of the old city and is a mere 3 kms from Berhampur railway station. A huge number of devotees visit the temple to worship the deity inside the shrine, which is a crudely cut piece of stone smeared with sindoor.

Originally, the goddess was worshiped by the Dera people, an Andhra weaver community, when they first settled in Brahmapur. The temple is notable for its intimate relationship between low caste people and the mainstream of Hinduism. The priests are barbers by caste, although the pilgrims are from all castes.

The Berhampur Thakurani is famed for its bi-annual festival popularly known as Thakurani Yatra or Ghata Yatra. It is the main festival of not only Berhampur, but also of the entire Southern Orissa. In alternate years during the month of Chaitra (March / April), the month-long event is celebrated with great pomp as the Goddess’s homecoming.

The custom that is followed focuses on the fact that the goddess is believed to be a daughter given away in marriage, and visits her fathers house every two years. Her presence at (Paternal) home is celebrated as the festival period. The city wears a festive look during during the festival.

Daringbadi hill station

Daringbadi comes as a pleasant surprise for those who believe that Odisha is all about temples and beaches. Your next destination is a hill station in the neighbouring Kandhamal district about 120 kilometres from Berhampur. Fondly referred to as the “Kashmir of Odisha”, Daringbadi is a popular tourist spot and  sits calmly at an elevation of 3000 feet, waiting to be explored.

Pine trees, coffee gardens and valleys make Daringbadi picture-perfect. It is a place where you can stay in quaint cottages amidst trees and valleys, the weather is inviting – beating the heat in summers and offering snow in the winter. The place does not only have verdant and thick forests, but is also bountiful in flora and fauna. The best part about this hill station is that you can visit this place throughout the year.

Daringbadi appears to be an unusual name for a hill station. Such a peculiar name is attributed to a British officer named Daring Saheb during colonial rule who was in charge of the place.. It was soon named after him, with the addition of Badi, which means village. More than half of Daringbadi’s population is made up of tribal and indigenous people who have lived in the area for generations. They have a unique folk dance, music, and cuisine that they share.

Gandahati Waterfall

If you are a nature lover, then you are not supposed to miss visiting Gandahati Waterfall which is 153 kilometres away from Berhampur in the neighbouring Gajapati district. Parlakhemundi, the district headquarters of Gajapati is only 30 kilometres from the waterfall. The distance might make you become a little hesitant to visit the place, but once you reach the waterfall, you realise that the place is worth it. This is a perennial waterfall that you can visit any time of the year.

As you travel to the fall, you will find it covered with dense forest all around. You also have to cross a few small villages on the way to the falls. To cross the stream, a wooden bridge has been built. From the point when we enter the falls area to the steps that go to the fall, there is a wooden fence. A little garden with small benches and other swing and see-saw type things for children to play is maintained for the amusement of the visitors.

The fall is about 20 meters high and the stream is also not that deep, allowing anyone, irrespective of age, to readily enter and play in it. Another viewpoint in this place is a huge rock where visitors may relax and enjoy the fall while taking photographs. To the left of the waterfall there is a shrine dedicated to Hindu goddess Maa Santoshi. The place is particularly popular among picnickers, pleasure seekers and nature lovers.

Khasada Waterfall

There is one more waterfall that must find a place in the itinerary of your Berhampur visit. Khasada waterfall is about 90 kilometres from Berhampur in Jiranga near Chandragiri in Gajapati district.

The enchanting beauty of Khasada Waterfall is attributed to its location which is strategically nestled between the small hills and lush green forest. It is one of the most wonderful and crowded waterfalls. However it is not a perennial waterfall. When I visited the place in March this year, there was not much water here.

Tourists, particularly those taking baths, must be cautious because the smooth rocks underwater are rather slippery. These slick rocks give the waterfall its name, “Khasada.” In Odia language, the word “khasada” means “slippery.”

There are no hotels or dhabas nearby, therefore one must bring all necessary things and food. Snacks, cold drinks, mineral water, and biscuits are available at only a few shops and that too only during season time.

However after the fall of the Mauryan empire and the downfall of their absolute supremacy, the Ganjam region also disappeared from the political scenario of Odisha and was in a dark oblivion till in 1761, it was recognised as The French Bussy. Located in Gajapati district of the state, Jiranga also known as Chandragiri boasts of a sizable Tibetan population thanks to the Chinese invasion of Tibet in !959 that forced religious and political head Dalai Lama and thousands of his followers to take refuge in India. Chandragiri in Gajapati district of Odisha was one of the six sites in India where the Tibetan refugees were settled. Since then Chandragiri or JIranga has evolved into an area with distinct Tibetan Buddhist character.

Over the years what has become the center of attraction for the visitors in JIranga is the monastery which was inaugurated by the Dalai Lama in 2010. The monastery called Padma Sambhava Mahavihara which in Tibetan is known as Thupten Mindolling Monastery is said to be the largest monastery in Estern India.

The Tibetans refer to the entire region as Phuntsokling, which translates to “Land of Happiness and Plenty.” Thus, JIranga which is endowed with gifts of nature such as forest, hills, valleys and waterfalls has become a major tourist attraction with the JIranga Monastery as its epicenter. Potagarh or Potagada Fort

The historic pentagon-shaped Potagada fort near Berhampur, which has seen three foreign rulers now stands as a ruin thanks to time and the saline breeze from the neighbouring Bay of Bengal.

Historians claim that Potagada was built in 1768 under the direction of Edward Costford, the first British resident officer of Ganjam. It has five bastions with a pentagonal design. There are office buildings, a magazine, artillery, armoury, stores, and custom houses within the fort.

The star-shaped fort is surrounded by a wide and deep moat. Its strongly built earthen rampart is about 15-ft high, 92-metre long and 19-metre wide.

Since the fort was built underground, it is not visible from a distance. Located on the confluence of river Rushikulya and the Bay of Bengal, it served as the first collectorate complex of Ganjam 253 years ago.

Potagada is a cluster of forts that shed light on the history of Muslim and French rulers as well as their administrative practises. It is claimed that Muslim rulers built a fort on the site. Monsieur De Bussy, a French commander, gained control of Ganjam in 1753 and governed out of Potagada. The French rule of Potagarh ended in 1765, when the British took over. A must visit for history enthusiasts.

Best Travel Duffel Bags 2024

Here are some of the top travel duffel bags you can buy today, including this Patagonia Black Hole style. REI

  • Dawn Magyar | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

If you have a getaway planned for the summer, you’ll need a durable bag to stand up to all the adventures you have planned during your trip.

A travel duffel bag is the perfect companion for those summer vacations as it allows you to pack what you need with ample roominess and easy portability. These bags also offer compartments to keep your personal belongings organized with adjustable straps to sling over the shoulder or carry as a backpack.

But with so many different duffel bag styles to choose from, it can be a challenge to decide which one to buy.

To help, here are some of the most recommended travel duffel bags available, including styles from Patagonia and Beis .

  • Patagonia Black Hole Duffel: “This bag is the most versatile gear duffle we’ve found. It’s tough, water-resistant, and great for toting clothes and equipment in almost any travel or outdoor scenario,” Wirecutter says.
  • Beis Commuter Duffel: “The bag is bursting with compartments and pockets for organizing small, medium, and large items so you can pack efficiently before a weekend getaway. After we packed the bag full of clothing, shoes, and a toiletry bag, it was fairly heavy, but the shoulder and tote straps were shockingly comfortable and helped balance out the weight,” Travel + Leisure says.
  • REI Co-op Roadtripper: “The REI Roadtripper offers excellent storage and utility at over half the price of other bags, making it an exceptional value for a duffel bag on a budget,” GearLab says.
  • Away The Everywhere Bag: “It’s made of nylon with leather details on the handles and straps and it features two large outer pockets. Inside, it’s just as well-organized, with a 15-inch laptop sleeve and a host of zippered and slip pockets to hold everything from a paperback to your mobile phone,” Popular Mechanics says.
  • Osprey Transporter Duffel Bag: “After testing a series of duffels, the Osprey Transporter 40L stands out as the go-to hauler for a long weekend. It features a zippered end pocket about the exterior for smaller items like keys or headphones, and a large, easy-to-access main body with a lockable U-zipper carries everything from shirts and shorts to technical equipment,” Forbes says.

I Wore This Breezy Button-down All Over Europe, and It Never Wrinkled — so I’m Stocking Up on 12 Similar Styles

My favorite finds from Amazon, Madewell, and more start at just $8.

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

A few summers ago, I discovered the perfect white button-down shirt while prepping for a three-week trip to Europe. Though the Big Dart Women’s Loose Fit Button-down Shirt was admittedly an Amazon impulse purchase, this $26 shirt easily ended up being the most versatile item in my suitcase while I traveled to Portugal and France with my family.

This oversized button-down emerged as my vacation wardrobe workhorse thanks to its lightweight material, crisp feel, and surprisingly durable fabric. I was traveling with my two young sons, which meant everything I wore was susceptible to spills, and I was shocked by how well this button-down washed and how stain-resistant and durable the fabric was, as well as how wrinkle-resistant it was. It’s a cotton polyester blend, so not 100 percent cotton, but I still found it to be very breathable and soft.

Big Dart Women’s Loose Fit Button-down Shirt

Better yet, the Big Dart button-down went with pretty much everything I had packed for that trip: I could wear it over a bathing suit, tucked into pants, tied up with denim shorts, or left unbuttoned with a tank top underneath. It worked equally well on hot days to provide sun coverage and as a lightweight topper on cooler nights. All in all, it made me feel put-together and stylish — and because I could wear it with absolutely everything, I felt I’d achieved the elusive and satisfying feeling of “packing well.”

Below, 12 more oversized button-downs that are perfect for travel, ranging from short-sleeve styles to shirts available in bright colors and fun patterns —  starting at just $8 .

Hotouch Women’s Cotton Button-down Shirt

Like my beloved Big Dart button-down, this shirt is available on Amazon, super affordable, and hugely versatile. But it has a slightly beachier, slouchier silhouette that some people may prefer, especially for warm-weather trips. Made of 100 percent cotton with a linen-like texture and a chest pocket, reviewers say the fabric feels surprisingly high quality. The fit is “oversized just enough to be loose, but looks great buttoned or open with a tank top,” says one , and the material is lightweight but not see-through.

Dokotoo Women’s Color Block Button-down Shirt

Another under-$40 Amazon find, this billowing button-down from Dokotoo is made from 100 percent cotton but slightly rough and textured, similar to linen. The shirt boasts more than 1,000 five-star reviews: The fabric is “ great quality ,” reviewers say; they also love the “beautiful color” (in addition to solid basics, there are fun color block prints), “gauzy” feel, and comfortable fit.

Gap Organic Cotton Perfect Shirt

Discounted from its original price of $70, Gap’s Organic Cotton Perfect Shirt is a steal. This button-down has a straight silhouette that sits around the hip, the perfect length to tuck in or wear loose; just size up for that effortless oversized look. The 100 percent organic cotton fabric is “stylish and crisp” and “really versatile,” reviewers say.

Madewell Signature Poplin Oversized Shirt

For excellent basics, you can always rely on Madewell. This oversized button-down, marked down more than 50 percent, comes in a few different colors in addition to white (for something a little different, I love the blue and white stripe) and is available in sizes from S to XXL. Reviewers rave about the lightweight material, with one saying it’s their new favorite shirt and it “makes me feel like Diane Keaton ready to walk the beaches of Rhode Island.”

Old Navy Linen-Blend Button-Down Boyfriend Shirt

With its super soft linen rayon blend and 1,000-plus five-star reviews, this best-selling button-down from Old Navy may just be the perfect white linen beach top. It’s “super comfortable,” “lightweight and summery,” and “has just the right oversized fit.” Some reviewers do find that it runs a little longer than your average button-down, though others say this helps make it ideal as a swim cover-up.

Cunlin Wrinkle-free Women’s Button Down

Another great Amazon find, this striped button-down is available in a range of perfect-for-summer colors like pink , purple , and light blue . It’s made of a wrinkle-free material and has a standard to oversized fit that’s still slightly more structured than other options. Reviewers say for that “boyfriend” style, size up one, and otherwise, “It looks more expensive than it really was and can be dressed up or down. Travels really well and doesn't seem to wrinkle easy, as promised.”

Amazon Essentials Classic Long Sleeve Button-down Shirt

You couldn’t go wrong with this lightweight cotton poplin shirt if you tried. With a classic look that can easily take you from day to night, walking tour to dinner and back, this is your shirt — and it’s only $26. Reviewers say that while this shirt does tend to get creases throughout the day, it’s “high-quality” and better than name brands they’ve tried.

Uniqlo Premium Linen Long Sleeve Shirt

Made of 100 percent linen flax grown in Europe, this slightly sheer button-down from Uniqlo is “great quality,” has a “perfect fit,” and is “long enough to wear over tights, tucked in, tied in the front, anyway you want it,” according to reviewers. It’s also available in virtually every possible color, from classic white to a peachy orange to various shades of blue. Note that the fit isn’t oversized, so size up if you’d prefer a roomier silhouette.

Uniqlo Linen Blend Band Collar Striped 3/4-Sleeve Shirt

Though similar to the button-down above, this Uniqlo shirt has a band collar and three-quarter length sleeves that give it a soft, beachy look. It’s semi-sheer, reviewers note, so you may want to wear a shirt underneath if you choose one of the lighter colors. The fabric is soft and lightweight, and also makes a perfect beach cover-up.

Quince Organic Cotton Poplin Long Sleeve Boyfriend Shirt

There’s a case to be made that Quince is one of the best places to shop for affordable travel basics, and the retailer’s 100 percent Organic Cotton Poplin Long Sleeve Boyfriend Shirt is evidence number one. Made from organic poplin, it’s crisp and classic with a fit that’s loose but not ultra oversized. Reviewers love the “great quality” materials and “super versatile” silhouette that can be dressed up or down. And while “it does need an iron,” reviewers say, the shirt can be washed without shrinking.

Ichuanyi Womens Cotton Button-down Shirt

No, you’re not reading the price wrong — this short-sleeve button-down top from Walmart’s Ichuanyi line is indeed just $8. A nice alternative to longer sleeves, reviewers say this shirt has a lightweight material, washes well, and is easy to dress up or down. (Just keep in mind that it does wrinkle, so you may choose to iron it.) Best yet, there are a whopping 29 stylish color options and an inclusive size range from S to 5XL.

J.Ver Wrinkle-free Button-down Shirt

One of the most prized qualities of the Big Dart shirt is that it didn’t wrinkle; in fact, I did not iron it once. That’s what reviewers also loved about this Amazon button-down which they say is “ very comfortable and looks really nice on, no wrinkles .” It’s not oversized per se, but you can always size up for a roomier look, but with its streamlined look this one can also be worn to dressier dinners or even business meetings on the go — no need for a portable steamer.
