Before Capital One unveiled its new transferable rewards program called Capital One Miles, its cash-back rewards offerings were off the charts.

It wasn’t unusual to be able to earn 4% cash-back or more on everyday purchase categories like dining, groceries, and entertainment.

A bit of attention has been drawn away from cash-back since the explosion in popularity of Capital One Miles, but in this article, we’ll cover which Capital One credit cards earn cash-back and how to earn lots of cash-back with Capital One’s cash-back cards.

The Value of Capital One Cash-back

It’s hard to deny there’s a more flexible rewards currency than cash-back!

With Capital One, cash-back is accumulated in your account so you can save for a large statement credit or significant purchase.

Additional redemption options include gift cards, making a charitable donation, or receiving a check (at a reduced value).

Capital One also makes it easy to earn cash-back. With multiple bonus spending categories on Capital One personal cards, your cash-back earnings will add up fast.

On the business side, you won’t have to keep track of special earning categories at all with flat rate earnings across the board.

Because of the simple earning structure, all purchases receive the same level of rewards: the Capital One Spark Cash Plus card earns 2% cash-back and the Capital One Spark Cash Select for Excellent Credit earns 1.5% cash-back.

Whether you purchase travel, office supplies, or shipping, you’ll earn the same level of cash-back rewards on every purchase with your Capital One business credit card.

Bottom Line: Capital One business cash-back credit cards offer simple earnings of either 1.5% or 2% cash-back (depending on the card), with no bonus spending categories.

Cash-back rewards that you earn on your Capital One card never expire as long as you have a Capital One account open and in good standing . If you close your account, unused cash-back will be forfeited.

Capital One credit cards do not charge foreign transaction fees.

Occasionally, Capital One runs Refer a Friend promotions that reward you with statement credits for referring a friend who is subsequently approved for the credit card. These promotions are usually targeted to specific cardholders who receive an invitation email with the terms of the referral program, but cardholders of the Quicksilver card, Capital One Savor card, or Capital One SavorOne card in good standing may qualify for the referral program. To find your referral link, sign in to your account or look in the app for the Refer a Friend tile on the account details page.

There’s no need to feel left out if you have bad credit or no credit — Capital One issues several credit cards for building or rebuilding credit . The issuer also offers the opportunity to find out if you’re pre-qualified or pre-approved for one of their credit cards .

Hot Tip: While earning cash-back is nice, we recommend accumulating Capital One miles over cash-back because of the valuable transfer partnerships that help you book luxury travel for maximum value .

Capital One’s cash-back cards have a lot going for them, especially if you focus on a handful of unique credit cards offering outsized cash-back. For example, the Capital One Savor card earns an awesome 4% cash-back on dining and entertainment.

But because these cash-back rewards are always fixed in value, earning 1% to 4% cash-back via Capital One’s cash-back credit cards might not be the best you can get. It’s probably better to use a card that earns Membership Rewards or Ultimate Rewards points .

The American Express ® Gold Card , for instance, earns 4 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent on dining — and Membership Rewards have the potential to deliver value far greater than 1 cent per point.

Capital One Quicksilver Overview

There are four main types of cash-back credit cards, and the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card falls into the flat-rate rewards category. This means it earns the same amount of cash back on most purchases — in this case, 1.5% — no matter what you buy. In addition, this card now offers 5% cash back on hotel and car rental bookings made through Capital One Travel.

It also means it's one of the easiest cards to use, because you don't have to worry about keeping track of bonus earning categories.

The Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card has a substantial welcome offer for new cardholders: one-time $200 cash bonus once you spend $500 on purchases within three months of account opening. That's just one of the many reasons the card is so popular.

You'll also get a handful of travel and shopping benefits, including no foreign transaction fees on international purchases ( rates and fees ).

Capital One Quicksilver Comparison

There other cash-back cards that offer a similar intro bonus and potentially greater rewards on everyday spending, if you're willing to keep track of bonus categories. They may also offer a higher rate of cash back, but with some/ tradeoffs, such as foregoing a welcome bonus offer or keeping track of bonus categories that earn more rewards.

For example, the Chase Freedom Unlimited and Chase Freedom Flex℠ earn up to 5% back in certain categories, so depending on your spending habits, one of these cards could be a better fit for you.

And if you're looking for a no-annual-fee card that has a higher rate of return on purchases, the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card is hard to beat. You'll earn 2% cash rewards on purchases with no limit to what you can earn, along with a welcome bonus of $200 cash rewards bonus after spending $500 in purchases in the first three months from account opening.

In 2020, the average household spent $7,316 on food and $2,912 on entertainment, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics . That could be a return of at least $409.12 ($10,228 x 0.04 = $409.12) for dining and entertainment purchases.

Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card

  • Reward rate: 3% cash back on dining and at grocery stores (excluding superstores like Walmart® and Target®), popular streaming services, and entertainment; 5% back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel; 8% cash back on Capital One Entertainment purchases; 10% cash back on purchases made through Uber & Uber Eats (through 11/14/2024); and 1% cash back on all other purchases

  • Annual fee: $0
  • Credit required: Excellent, Good

If you want a solid cashback card with a $0 annual fee, the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card  is a good choice. You won’t see the same level of cash back on restaurant and entertainment purchases as with the Savor card, but you’ll still get some perks.

Let's say you spend $5,000 on groceries each year, that's $150 ($5,000 x 0.03 = $150) in cashback rewards. If you also spend $5,000 on dining and entertainment annually, that's another $150 in cash back.

Who this card is good for: This card is good for someone who wants to earn extra rewards on high-spending categories — but wants a $0 annual fee. The 0% introductory APR (annual percentage rate) on purchases for 15 months (then 19.99% - 29.99% (Variable) APR) can also be a benefit for consumers who know they’ll be making a large purchase, like a vacation or computer, and want a little time to pay the purchase off.

Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card

  • Reward rate: 1.5% cash back on every purchase, every day; and 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel (terms apply)
  • Early spend bonus: Earn a one-time $200 cash bonus after you spend $500 on purchases within 3 months from account opening

The Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card  earns a consistent 1.5% cash back on all purchases, making this card a straightforward choice for those who don’t want to worry about categories or reward calendars. Additionally, there’s a 0% introductory APR on purchases for 15 months (then 19.99% - 29.99% (Variable)), making this card tempting for someone planning to make a large buy. With this card, it would be possible to buy a $2,000 computer and then take nine months to pay it off at about $222.22 per month.

Who this card is good for: If you want a straightforward, no-hassle way to earn cashback rewards as well as a $0 annual fee, this card is a good choice.

Capital One QuicksilverOne Cash Rewards Credit Card

  • Early spend bonus: Unlimited access to CreditWise: a free monitoring tool that won't damage your score

The no-frills Capital One QuicksilverOne Cash Rewards Credit Card  offers an unlimited 1.5% cash back on every purchase; plus 5% unlimited cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. There’s a $39 annual fee, but that can be balanced out once you spend at least $2,600 on your card. If you spend $5,000 annually on everyday expenses, that's at least $75 ($5,000 x 0.015 = $75) in cash back.

Who this card is good for: If you’re having trouble qualifying for a cashback rewards card because of your credit, this might be an option. You could get this card with an average credit score, unlike some other cashback cards that require you to have an excellent credit score. Note that credit card issuers typically use more than your credit score to determine whether you qualify for a credit card.

Capital One Spark Cash Plus

  • Early spend bonus: Earn $1,200 after spending $30,000 in the first 3 months

As a business owner, it’s important to keep your business and personal expenses separate. You can also earn $1,200 after spending $30,000 in the first 3 months.

There’s an annual fee of $150, but you can offset that by spending at least $7,500 ($7,500 x 0.02 = $150) per year.

The Capital One Spark Classic for Business  is a straightforward, basic card that pays out 1% unlimited cash back on every purchase for your business, plus 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, with a $0 annual fee. Who this card is good for: Business owners who have less-than-excellent credit and would like access to a cashback card can benefit from the Spark Classic.

Seeing your cash back is fairly straightforward. When you log into your account, all of the vital information about your card is available at the top of your screen. You can see how much you have in cashback rewards listed on the left of the screen.

Best Ways to Earn Cash Back with Capital One Credit Cards

After a transaction clears and is no longer pending, Capital One will update what you’ve earned. The updated amount is immediately available, no matter how much you have, and you’ll see it redeemed to your card within two or three business days.

There are no limits on when and how much you can redeem when it comes to your Capital One cashback rewards, except for when you want to redeem for a gift card. Capital One offers four main options for redeeming your available cash back:

  • Redeem for cash: Choose to receive statement credit or a check.
  • Cover your purchases: Choose from a list of eligible purchases and the cash rewards will go toward covering that specific choice.
  • Get gift cards: You can also redeem for a gift card to a store of your choice, starting at $10.
  • Share your rewards: It’s also possible to move your rewards to another Capital One card you have or to even give your rewards to someone else with a Capital One account.

Simply choose the “View Rewards” option below your rewards display and follow the instructions for redeeming your cash back.

One of the great things about Capital One is that you can choose to automatically redeem your cash back. That means you’ll never forget to use your rewards, and you’ll save time by not having to manually request your cash back. Here’s how you do it:

  • Go to your View Rewards page, and click on your “Rewards Settings.”
  • You’ll see an option to set up the auto-redeem function. Click on that.

Best Ways to Earn Cash Back with Capital One Credit Cards

  • Elect whether you want the money sent to your card as a credit or whether you want a check.
  • Choose how often you want the cash back, whether once a year or when you reach a certain threshold. The minimum is $25.

Best Ways to Earn Cash Back with Capital One Credit Cards

Once it’s set up, you can still go back anytime to edit the threshold redemption amount or even turn off the auto-redeem setting. Also, having an automatic redemption set up doesn’t stop you from redeeming cash for other rewards before you reach your threshold. So you can have an automatic redemption set up so you never forget about your rewards and still get a few bucks back here and there anytime you like.

In addition to cashback cards, Capital One also offers popular credit cards — such as the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card  and Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card  — that earn miles instead. You can also earn travel rewards for your business with the Capital One Spark Miles for Business .

It’s possible to redeem those miles for cash, but going that route with your rewards might not be the most valuable way to use them.

Capital One has a few rules about how many credit cards you can have . In general, Capital One limits you to two personal cards. However, there are exceptions to this rule:

  • One way you could get more than two cards is if you have a co-branded card issued by Capital One, like one of its retail store cards from Bass Pro Shops, Kohl’s, and others.
  • You could also possibly get more than two Capital One cards if you have one of its business cards. For example, I have two personal Capital One cashback cards and one Capital One business cashback card.

That said, even if you’re approved for additional Capital One cards, you might not receive the associated welcome bonus. Additionally, you’re limited to one application every six months with Capital One. So if you’re not patient about your credit card applications, you might not be approved, regardless of the number of cards you have.

Before deciding how to proceed with your applications, it’s best to carefully consider which cards will work best for you and why — and then plan out a schedule to increase your odds of approval.

For example, I have a Capital One QuicksilverOne Credit Card from back in the day, and that earns unlimited 1.5% cash back on every purchase; plus 5% unlimited cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.

I recently decided to add the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card to get 3% cash back on dining and at grocery stores (excluding superstores like walmart® and target®), popular streaming services, and entertainment, plus 8% cash back on Capital One Entertainment purchases — with a  $0 annual fee.

By being judicious about which cards I use, I can earn more cash back. I get 3% when I pay for dining and at grocery stores (excluding superstores like walmart® and target®), popular streaming services, and entertainment purchases with the SavorOne, and I also use the SavorOne at grocery stores. Everything else gets me 1.5% cash back with the QuicksilverOne — and I don’t have to worry about registering for rotating categories. And of course, I get up to 5% cash back on business purchases with my Capital One Spark Cash Select for Business .

Capital One offers plenty of options for those who want a simple approach to earning cash back. Review the choices above and figure out if it makes sense for you to maximize your cash earnings using Capital One cards. For more rewards, check out the Capital One Shopping app .

When you understand your spending habits — and are committed to paying off your balance each month to avoid interest charges — you can use some of the best cash back credit cards to earn easy money on all the things you plan to buy anyway.

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card * -- Wells Fargo’s latest and best travel card -- recently launched with an impressive set of features. Its competitive rewards, welcome bonus and redemption options take aim at incumbent travel credit cards from Chase, American Express and Capital One.

What gives Wells Fargo’s first foray into the point-transfer space an edge is that you don’t have to book travel in a portal to earn the highest rewards rates.

Here’s why we think the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey could go toe-to-toe with some of the best travel credit cards, plus three insider tips to help you decide if you should add it to your credit card lineup.

Here’s a quick overview of what you can expect with the Autograph Journey:

  • Earn 60,000 welcome bonus rewards points after spending $4,000 in purchases within three months of account opening.
  • Earn unlimited 5x points on hotels, 4x points on airlines, 3x points on other travel and dining and 1x on other purchases.
  • Receive an annual statement credit with a $50 minimum airline purchase.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • Other benefits include trip cancellation and interruption insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, roadside dispatch and cell phone insurance.
  • $95 annual fee.

Here’s a rundown of four facts we discovered about the Autograph Journey that you should know when deciding whether to apply.

1. You can transfer points with Wells Fargo point-based cards

The launch of the Autograph Journey also marks the first transferable points program from Wells Fargo, which joins other card issuers like Chase and Capital One, which have their own pooling programs .

Autograph Journey will be able to do a points transfer with the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card . This is especially notable since the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card offers bonus rewards in different categories than the Autograph Journey.

For example, the Autograph card earns unlimited 3x points on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans, plus 1x points on other purchases. So you can maximize your point earning across different categories, then transfer your points to your Autograph Journey account to access premium travel redemptions.

2. It offers more options for earning bonus miles on travel than some competitors

The Autograph Journey will offer more flexibility than many travel rewards cards when it comes to earning more points on travel purchases. For example, cardholders earn unlimited 5x points on hotels booked directly with hotel brands and 4x points on airfare booked with airlines.

This helps the card stand out from other popular travel credit cards that offer the most bonus points only if you book travel through their portals. For example, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card * and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card * only offer the highest bonus rewards on travel booked through Capital One Travel. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card also offers its highest rate of 5x points on travel booked through Chase Travel℠, whereas other travel purchases earn 2x points.

Autograph Journey cardholders also earn a minimum of 3x points on other travel purchases, which could include rental cars, cruises and travel booked through online travel agencies like Expedia and Priceline.

3. The card may grow in value as more transfer partners join

The Autograph Journey Card will earn flexible travel rewards points that transfer to a selection of airline and hotel partners, similar to Amex Membership Rewards points or Chase Ultimate Rewards . While the list of transfer partners is limited, Wells Fargo stated in its initial press release that “more partners will continue to be added throughout the year.”

Points transfers could dramatically change the value proposition of the Autograph Journey, especially if new partners include domestic airlines and popular hotel loyalty programs.

Wells Fargo point transfers will be available to new cardholders starting on April 4. For now, Wells Fargo transfer partners include the following:

Find the best credit card for you

5 best credit cards that offer pre-approval or pre-qualification in 2024, pre-approval doesn't guarantee approval, but it can help you avoid an unnecessary hard pull on your credit..

thumbnail

Terms apply to American Express benefits and offers. Visit americanexpress.com to learn more.

When you apply for a credit card, the issuer performs what is known as a hard pull or hard inquiry , which shows up on your credit report. Hard pulls temporarily lower your credit score, which isn't the end of the world, but it's better to avoid racking up unnecessary hard inquiries since they can remain on your credit report for up to two years. One way to do this is by going through a card issuer's pre-approval or pre-qualification process before applying.

Getting a pre-approved offer for a credit card doesn't guarantee you'll be approved, but it can give you a better idea of your approval odds with no hard inquiry. There is no impact to your credit score until you formally apply.

Not every card issuer offers pre-approvals. Below, CNBC Select details the top credit cards that generally offer pre-approval or pre-qualification and how they work. (See our methodology for more information on how we made this list.)

What's the difference between a pre-approval and a pre-qualification?

The terms pre-approval and pre-qualification both refer to the card issuers' pre-screening process that can help you determine whether you'll qualify for a credit card without a hard pull on your credit reports. Prequalified offers are typically initiated by consumers who want to check their approval odds, while preapproved offers are generally unsolicited offers from card issuers.

Does pre-approval or pre-qualification result in a hard credit pull?

Most credit card pre-approvals do not result in a hard pull of your credit. Some issuers require a Social Security Number (SSN) or the last four digits of your SSN to process a pre-approval, but this is generally done to verify your identity and shouldn't result in a credit check unless otherwise stated.

Does pre-approval guarantee approval?

If you qualify for a pre-approved credit card or receive a pre-screened offer in the mail, that does not guarantee you'll be approved. Your credit score, income and history with the card issuers are all taken into account, but won't be fully reviewed unless you submit a traditional card application.

Bottom line

Getting a pre-approved, pre-qualified or pre-screened credit card offer doesn't guarantee you'll get approved for the card if you apply. However, seeing whether you're pre-approved for a card offer is easy and typically doesn't require a hard credit pull. So it doesn't hurt to explore what offers you may qualify for.

Frequent Uber or Lyft user? These are the best credit cards for you

O ver the past few years, we've embraced ride-hailing services so fully that it's hard to imagine a time when our only options to get around a new city were public transportation or calling a taxi.

But as convenient as they are, services like Uber and Lyft can get expensive. Fortunately, ride-hailing services have become a common bonus category for both travel credit cards and cash-back credit cards , and many cards offer specific credits and benefits when you book a ride via an app.

Below, we're breaking down the best Uber and Lyft credit cards to help you maximize your earnings on each trip.

Overview of the best credit cards for Uber and Lyft

*Valuations are based on TPG's latest calculations and are not provided by card issuers.

The information for the Capital One Savor Rewards, American Express Green and Apple Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

the best credit cards for Uber and Lyft

Chase sapphire reserve.

Annual fee: $550

Rewards on ride-shares: 10 points per dollar on Lyft purchases through March 31, 2025 ; 3 points per dollar on travel, which includes Uber

Why it's great for Lyft and Uber: The Chase Sapphire Reserve — one of the best travel credit cards on the market— offers an unbeatable 10 points per dollar on Lyft purchases and a solid 3 points per dollar on Uber expenses, which code as travel on your statement.

The Lyft and Uber benefits with the Sapphire Reserve don't end with the earning structure — there's also the $300 annual travel credit that comes with the card; because Chase considers ride-hailing services to be a travel expense, you can also potentially get up to $300 off your rides every year thanks to the travel credit. Chase automatically reimburses you in statement credits for your travel purchases.

Finally, Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders get a complimentary Lyft Pink All Access membership . This grants members benefits like priority pickups, free cancellations and 10% off all Lux rides.

For more details, read our full review of the Chase Sapphire Reserve .

Apply here: Chase Sapphire Reserve

Chase Sapphire Preferred Card

Annual fee: $95

Rewards on ride-shares: 5 points per dollar on Lyft rides through March 31, 2025 (3 bonus points in addition to the 2 points earned on all travel)

Why it's great for ride-shares: While it has a lower earning rate than the Sapphire Reserve (and no travel credit), the Preferred is a good choice if you prefer not to pay a steep annual fee.

For more details, read our full review of the Chase Sapphire Preferred .

Apply here: Chase Sapphire Preferred

Capital One Savor Rewards Card

Annual fee : $95

Rewards on ride-shares: Unlimited 10% cash back on Uber and Uber Eats, plus complimentary Uber One membership, through Nov. 14, 2024

Why it's great for ride-shares: The Savor offers great ride-sharing benefits along with 4% back on dining, entertainment and popular streaming services, plus 3% back at grocery stores, but it does carry a modest annual fee.

For more details, read our full review of the Capital One Savor card .

Capital One SavorOne Rewards Card

Annual fee: $0 (see rates and fees )

Why it's great for ride-shares: For Capital One fans who don't like paying an annual fee, this card offers solid value and benefits, along with unlimited 3% cash back on dining, entertainment, popular streaming services and at grocery stores (excluding superstores like Walmart and Target).

For more details, read our full review of the SavorOne card .

Apply here: Capital One SavorOne

American Express Green Card

Annual fee: $150 (see rates and fees )

Rewards for ride-shares: 3 points per dollar on transit, including Lyft and Uber

Why it's great for ride-shares: When Amex relaunched its iconic Amex Green Card a few years ago, it added expanded bonus categories to the benefits list — including 3 points per dollar on transit (Lyft and Uber purchases fall into that category). The card earns Membership Rewards points, which TPG values at 2 cents each . That's a 6% return on all of your Uber and Lyft spending.

For more details, read our full review of the Amex Green Card .

Chase Freedom Unlimited

Annual fee: $0

Rewards on ride-shares: 5% cash back on Lyft rides through March 31, 2025, along with 1.5% cash back on all other non-bonus category purchases, which includes Uber and Lyft.

Why it's great for ride-shares: The Freedom Unlimited is the card for you if you prefer cash back over points and miles (and enjoy not paying an annual fee).

However, you can get even more value from the card when you pair it with a premium card like the Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve. Chase allows you to combine your Ultimate Rewards points into a single account, effectively converting your cash-back rewards on the Freedom Unlimited to fully transferable points.

For more details, read our full review of the Chase Freedom Unlimited .

Apply here: Chase Freedom Unlimited

Alaska Airlines Visa® credit card

Rewards for ride-shares: 2 miles per dollar on ride-sharing purchases

Why it's great for ride-shares: Alaska Airlines miles are the most highly-valued airline miles on TPG's monthly valuations , providing a solid rate of return on your spending and miles that you can redeem for aspirational flights .

For more details, read our full review of the Alaska Airlines Visa card .

Apply here: Alaska Airlines Visa card

Citi Double Cash Card

Annual fee : $0

Rewards for ride-shares: 2% back on every purchase (1% when you buy and 1% when you pay your bill).

Why it's great for ride-shares: The Citi Double Cash offers up to 2% across every purchase, including Lyft and Uber purchases. This is one of the highest-earning, flat-rate cash-back cards on the market, and it's a common choice for those who want a straightforward way to earn rewards across every purchase without needing to keep track of activating rotating bonus categories. Now, you can also convert your Double Cash rewards into ThankYou points when you also have an eligible ThankYou credit card from Citi, such as the Citi Premier® Card (see rates and fees ).

For more details, read our full review of the Citi Double Cash .

Apply here: Citi Double Cash Card

Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express

Annual fee: $0 introductory annual fee for one year, then $95 (see rates and fees )

Rewards for ride-shares: 3% on transit, including ride-share apps like Lyft and Uber

Why it's great for ride-shares: The Blue Cash Preferred is another Amex card that received a makeover in 2019, adding expanded earning categories.

One of those additional categories was transit, which includes Lyft and Uber purchases. This card remains a strong option to use on all of your transit expenses including Uber and Lyft. Cash back is received as reward dollars that can be redeemed as a statement credit or at Amazon.com checkout.

For more details, read our full review of the Blue Cash Preferred .

Apply here: Blue Cash Preferred Card

Rewards for ride-shares: 3% cash back on Uber and Uber Eats

Why it's great for ride-shares: In 2019, Uber became one of the vendors to earn 3% cash back (Daily Cash) on the Apple Card.

The truth is, this card is best for true Apple loyalists since you only earn the highest Daily Cash at select merchants like Apple, Uber and Walgreens. You receive Daily Cash right after each purchase. That's good if you're a fan of simple cash back, but if you're going for points or miles, this card isn't the best choice.

For more details, read our full review of the Apple Card .

The Platinum Card® from American Express

Annual fee: $695 (see rates and fees )

Rewards for ride-shares: 1 point per dollar on ride-hailing service purchases, plus various benefits (see below).

Why it's great for ride-shares: While you're not earning bonus rewards on Uber or Lyft purchases, the Platinum Card is one of the best options out there for Uber perks.

The highlight of those benefits is up to $200 in Uber Cash to use annually (for U.S. services), which is broken down as $15 each month, plus a $20 bonus in December ($35 total for this month).

To get the credits, you need to add your Platinum Card as a payment option in your Uber app — the monthly credits will then be loaded into your Uber Cash account automatically at the beginning of each month. As an Amex Platinum cardholder, you'll also get Uber VIP status, which allows you to request top-rated drivers in select cities.

Just note that this Uber Cash doesn't roll over from month to month, but it's also valid for Uber Eats orders in the U.S. Be sure to use it before the last day of the month so it doesn't go to waste.

For more details, read our full review of the Amex Platinum Card .

Apply here: Amex Platinum Card

Another option: Gift cards

Gift cards earn a special mention in this article.

That's because you may earn a better return when purchasing Uber gift cards instead of paying for Uber rides directly. There are some caveats: Uber gift cards can only be used for rides or UberEats orders in the country where the gift card was purchased, and they can't be used for family profiles, scheduled rides or university campus card rides.

Buying Uber gift cards can be a good way to earn a solid return if you have a credit card that offers high bonus earnings for merchants where you can purchase gift cards , such as grocery stores , gas stations or office supply stores .

Three popular options for purchasing gift cards at select merchants are the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card , American Express® Gold Card and the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express . You'll need to find a store in the bonus category for your card that sells Uber gift cards and will allow you to purchase gift cards with a credit card.

Bottom Line

With rideshares being an integral part of modern travel, it makes sense to maximize your credit card benefits when booking a ride-hailing service like Uber or Lyft. The trick is to find the card or cards that work for you — and as you can see, there's no shortage of solid options available.
