How does this sound?

What is a driver assistance system?

Driver assistance systems relieve the driver of the task of driving, offer more comfort and increase safety. In an emergency, a driver assistance system can even take control of the car. Liability for the task of driving always remains with the driver.

Status Quo driver assistance systems

Currently, driver assistance systems act as practical support: Sensors capture information on – for example, speed limits – the distance to other vehicles and lane markings. Also, GPS and navigation system data feeds into the processing. Thanks to this data, audio signals or visual displays can warn against potentially hazardous situations.

However, there are already more advanced systems that not only warn you but also actively help you manage the vehicle if necessary or preferred. Some driver assistance systems brake, accelerate or perform active steering movements to avoid an accident or take the strain off the driver, for instance in critical or monotonous driving situations. Other systems assist you with maneuvering or parking.

Overview of driver assistance systems

Hill start assist Road sign recognition Emergency brake assist Steering and lane guidance assist Cruise control Distance control Speed limit assist Lane-change warning & lane-change assist Parking assist

How does hill start assist work?

You’ll certainly know this situation well: You’re driving up a hill and shortly before the peak, you need to stop. When starting with a manual gearbox, you press the clutch and take your foot off the brake to accelerate. What happens at this exact moment? You roll back. Hill start assist – or simply start assist – should prevent exactly this. When the driver disengages the brake, the rear axle secures the vehicle for a short time. When starting the driver assistant releases this once more.

Video

Benefits: This driver assistance system is certainly not indispensable for the safe operation of a vehicle as with sufficient experience you can avoid tricky situations yourself. The assistance system can nevertheless make starting on extreme gradients, or with an additional trailing load, more pleasant.

What added value does road sign recognition offer?

When you’re in slow-moving traffic it’s often difficult to devote your full attention to everything that is happening. The road layout, oncoming traffic, speed restrictions, what’s happening beside you as well as behind you: A driver has to bear all this in mind. Road sign recognition can relieve you from this with help of a camera system which scans road signs and represents the processed data on the display. Accordingly, the road signs are displayed directly on your screen. Often this system is contained within other driver assistance systems such as the right of way warner, the wrong way assistant or speed limit info.

Video

Benefits: For accurate results, the driver assistance system is able to take into account and process various data sources such as recognised road signs, navigation devices and current vehicle data. Road sign recognition offers you increased safety and comfort during your journey by providing you with information i.e. right of way rules. You can concentrate on the traffic better without having to constantly gaze at the forest of signposts.

How does emergency brake assist work?

Emergency brake assist warns about the risk of collision and, where appropriate, brings the vehicle to a complete stop before it results in a crash with an obstruction, a person or another vehicle. Sensors measure the current speed and distance of the car ahead or the static obstruction (e.g. a person). Depending on the system, cyclists can also be identified. Acoustic warning signals are complemented by visual displays. Prior to emergency braking the driver assistance system calculates the optimal braking power and the resulting necessary braking pressure. This computed pressure is, depending on the system, independently transmitted by the assistant into an automatic brake, or only then applied when you press the brake pedal. A further development of brake assist is avoidance manoeuvre assistance: In order to avoid a collision, this system actively supports the driver with an evasive manoeuvre.

Video

Benefits: Emergency brake assist offers many advantages: Drivers are often careless, distracted, find themselves in chaotic circumstances or underestimate the distance to the vehicle ahead. This brake assist can, at the very least, reduce the severity grade of certain types of vehicle collisions.

How does steering and lane guidance assist provide support?

Congestion, slow-moving traffic, and long, monotonous journeys are sadly not uncommon, especially on the highway. When this happens, you have to keep a steady hand and patiently follow the road, sometimes for long periods of time. In these situations, a steering and lane guidance assistant can help you keep your vehicle in the lane – at high speeds as well – and make the task of steering easier. Cameras detect the lane markings, thus guiding the driver assistance system to the boundaries of the lane you are driving in. A look beyond the borders of Europe shows just how much more advanced this technology has already become. In some countries, the BMW Driving Assistant allows drivers to cruise “hands-off” at speeds of up to 130 km/h.

Video

Benefits: Lane guidance assistants can relieve the driver from steering, offer a feeling of safety and, above all, make long motorway journeys more comfortable.

In what way does cruise control make driving easier?

Cruise control is also known as “Speed Control” and allows you to select your desired cruising speed. This often takes place in combination with distance control. Following activation the driver assistance system constantly maintains your chosen speed and therefore offers enhanced comfort during long-distances. Cruise control can electronically adjust the speed to the surroundings and appropriately adjust the engine power.

Video

Benefits: With this assistance system particularly long journeys are more relaxing, and you can concentrate on the traffic. In conjunction with distance control the driving comfort is further enhanced: This calculates the speed of the vehicle ahead and automatically alters your own speed.

What is distance control?

Distance control is also called Adaptive Cruise Control. With a pre-set desired speed this driver assistance system orientates to the vehicle ahead and automatically brakes or accelerates depending on the distance from the leading vehicle. This system has already been integrated into many modern vehicles. The applied sensors measure the current speed and the distance from the car ahead. If you find yourself in stop start traffic, the distance control takes over braking and start-up.

Video

Benefits: Above all, you can use distance control during long journeys in combination with the cruise control function in order to arrive at your destination much more relaxed and to rest your legs as you don’t need to continually press the pedals. You must of course still keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. Besides comfort, distance control should also provide for greater safety during the journey.

What does the speed limit assist do?

This driver assistance system combines the distance control with speed limit recognition and can also called Speed Limit Assist. Speed limit assist superimposes information about the speed limit onto the display area. With the help of this assistant you can adapt the maximum speed of the vehicle to a particular limit. The system scans road signs with a camera. Software then processes all the data and combines this with the data from the navigation system. You can view this driver assistance system as additional “speed camera insurance” because, in supplementing cruise control and the distance controller, it recognises the respective speed limit and – in the latest design – also automatically adjusts.

Video

Benefits: According to research papers, around a quarter of accidents are due to speeding and the failure to maintain safe distances. Here, speed limit assist can increase your safety. Nevertheless, these systems do not absolve the vehicle operator of responsibility – they can however help to significantly reduce these numbers.

How does a lane-change warning work? Why use lane-change assist?

The lane-change warning can help you to safely execute a lane-change and support the view in the rear mirror and over the shoulder. Sensors monitor the area beside and behind your car, and they cover the notorious blind spot. If another car approaches your vehicle in the blind spot or is dangerously close and overlooked by the driver, the driver assistant recognises this and warns against changing lanes. This warning is made, for example, using flashing symbols in the side mirror and even with steering wheel vibrations or steering impulses. A further development is lane-change assist. This means you can change lanes automatically once you’ve set the indicator for a few seconds. In doing so, the system assesses whether there is another vehicle in the blind spot or dangerously close and only changes lane as long as the sensors do not detect a hazard.

Video

Benefits: A lane-change warning offers additional protection for road users, but it’s not a replacement for the rear and side mirrors or glancing over your shoulder. This driver assistance system can indeed help to avoid accidents – the driver must nevertheless pay full attention.

What advantages does parking assist offer?

Parking assistants support you when manoeuvring or parking and help protect you from parking damage. The range thereby extends from systems with a warning function to systems which display the surroundings or automatically carry out the parking process. Assistants make use of ultrasound and camera sensor data. Parkpilot indicates the distance to surrounding objects and in this way supports the drive mainly through the use of beeping. A rear camera is more detailed: Additionally, it displays the area behind the car and adds in suggested lines which provides guidance when parking. In further developments, driver assistance systems completely take over the parking process and independently carry out all the required steering manoeuvres as well as braking and acceleration. With such automated systems the assistant manoeuvres your car into and out of tight parking spaces at the touch of a button. Up to a certain speed the BMW Rear Drive Assist is capable of reconstructing the last 50m of the route driven in reverse. This can be useful, for example, in parking situations, but also when you want to reverse into a narrow lane.

Video

Benefits: With this assistance system tight car parks and narrow parking spaces on the roadside should no longer present a challenge. The comfort and advantages of a self-parking vehicle are clear.

From driver assistance systems to autonomous driving

The assistance systems presented offer only a small preview of the aim which many manufacturers are striving towards in the future: autonomous driving.

What's New for 2025?

A lane-change assist feature is new to the X5 for 2025. Coupled with the optional Highway Assist hands-free driving feature, the lane-change assist system allows the driver to confirm a lane-change suggested by the X5 by simply turning their eyes toward the corresponding rear-view mirror. Once the system detects the driver's confirmation, it performs the maneuver. Pretty cool on paper. When we get to drive an X5 with this setup, we'll let you know how it works in the real world. Otherwise, the X5 carries over from 2024 without any other changes.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2025 BMW X5 starts at $66,695 and goes up to $90,995 depending on the trim and options.

The base trim sDrive40i level is rear-wheel drive, but the xDrive40i, xDrive50e, and xDrive M60i models all have all-wheel drive as standard. We love saving money almost as much as we love great performance, and that's why we think the xDrive40i is the X5 to buy. It's got sports-sedan acceleration, comes with all-wheel drive, and is a relative bargain in this pricey class. We'd recommend adding the Premium package for its head-up display, LED exterior lighting, remote engine-start capability, and Harman/Kardon stereo system.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2025 X5 is offered with one of three distinct powertrains, each associated with a different model. X5s wearing the sDrive40i or xDrive40i badges are powered by a sweetly sonorous 375-hp turbocharged inline-six that overachieves in any model BMW drops it into. The plug-in hybrid xDrive50e comes with a turbocharged inline-six and an electric motor that combines for 483 horsepower. Last but not least, the M60i's got a 523-hp twin-turbo V-8. All three powertrains are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and none of them will leave drivers wanting for power in virtually any driving situation. The X5's refined ride and stable handling are hallmarks of this generation of BMW SUVs, as is its steering, which feels connected and direct. The Audi Q7 still has the X5 beat in this area, but it's a close match now. Pitch the X5 into a fast corner, and it holds on reliably and rewards the driver with a predictability that's missing from the Mercedes-Benz GLE-class .

0–60-MPH Times

The last time we tested an xDrive40i it made just 335 horsepower but still managed a quick 4.8-second run to 60 mph, so we expect a little extra hustle from the more powerful, 375-hp version . The 523-hp M50i rushed to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds in the same test; we haven't tested the new M60i, but it makes the same horsepower and torque. The xDrive50e plug-in hybrid is just as quick, getting to 60 mph in the same 3.9 seconds —plus it offers the option of driving on electricity.

2024 bmw x5 m60i

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The xDrive50e model comes standard with a 25.7-kWh battery pack that the EPA says is good for up to 38 miles of electric-only driving. The X5 can use the battery to travel up to 84 mph without tapping the gasoline engine. The battery pack can be charged at home on 110-volt or 220-volt outlets or at public charging stations.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA hasn't released fuel economy estimates for the plug-in hybrid xDrive50e yet, but the rear-wheel drive sDrive40i and the all-wheel drive xDrive40i are both rated for 23 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. The V-8–powered M60i model should be good for 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. When we get a chance, we'll take the 2024 X5 on our 75-mph highway fuel economy test route and update this story with its results. For more information about the X5's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Interior space is generous for adults in both the first and second rows, but the X5's optional third row is for kids only. Once settled inside, occupants are treated to a cabin lined with high-quality materials, plenty of charging points for devices, and—depending on the options chosen—myriad luxury features. Power-adjustable front seats with memory for the driver are standard. All models come with a power-adjustable steering column, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power rear liftgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and customizable ambient lighting. Massaging seats, remote start, soft-close doors, acoustic glass, a leather dashboard, and heated front armrests and steering wheel can make the X5 feel like a high-end luxury SUV but add a lot of dough to the bottom line. Speaking of expensive options, buyers can add a Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound audio system that features diamond-domed tweeters. The X5 cabin offers plentiful cargo space. With the rear seats in use, we managed to fit 11 of our carry-on suitcases behind the second row of seats. With the rear seats folded—an operation that can be done from either the side or the rear of the SUV—we found room for 26 cases. The GLE-class matched the X5's result in this test, case for case, but its rear seats aren't as easy to stow.

2024 bmw x5 m60i

Infotainment and Connectivity

Upon entering the X5's cabin, you're met with a curved display screen that span two-thirds of the dashboard. A 12.3-inch screen behind the wheel serves as a gauge display while a larger 14.9-inch touchscreen provides access to BMW's iDrive infotainment interface. Users can also control the system via a center-console-mounted rotary knob. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, as is a wireless smartphone charging pad and a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

BMW offers basic driver-assistance features as standard, including automated emergency braking, but more advanced features such as a hands-free driving mode are optional. For more information about the X5's crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Standard lane-departure warning
  • Available adaptive cruise control with hands-free driving mode

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

BMW matches its main rivals, Mercedes-Benz and Audi, with similar warranty coverage but offers three years or 36,000 miles worth of complimentary scheduled maintenance to sweeten the deal. Volvo buyers also get such a benefit, while the Buick Enclave offers longer powertrain coverage.

  • Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  • Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles

Adaptive Cruise Control

  • Add to quote

My new 2016 X5 has Adaptive Cruise Control as does my wife's Lexus RX350. On her car, I can turn off the feature that automatically maintains a set distance from the car in front while still in cruise control mode. I cannot find a way on my X5 to disable this feature while in cruise control mode. My BMW Genius didn't know how either.

Experiment Thanks, I'll try that.

Not to hijack the thread but why would you want normal CC and not ACC? I hated the ACC on my wife's old Toyota/Lexus but it's great on the BMW. I'm sure there a reason for wanting to turn it off but I cannot think of why.

I find the feature to be somewhat annoying if cars are cutting into my lane.

Occasionally the Daly morning sun can confuse the system and switch the acc off completely. When this happens it's useful to press and hold the 2 distance control buttons for about 3 seconds and you will get normal Cc

I just did a weekend trip in the X5. Hitting the 2 buttons for several seconds didn't remove be the radar controlled cruise distance function. Nevertheless, I've gotten used to the adaptive cruise and kind of like it. Thanks for all the inputs.

I attended a new owners event tonight and asked the Genius about switching off the radar distance control. He said to hold down the cruise control on button instead of just punching it. I'll try that soon.

I had an adaptive cruise (laser based sensor system) on my 2005 Lexus RX. It had the ability to switch into "normal" cruise mode which effectively eliminated the use of the sensor. This was desirable because the laser sensor system was prone to errors during rain. I've found that the more modern radar based systems don't have this issue. I've now got ACC on my F15 X5 and love it. It's really nice on long trips.

I'm getting ready to place an X5 order, the choices are Dynamic CC (standard) or Active CC (optional upgrade). The BMW tech guide says Dynamic cruise control is an electronic cruise control system with an extra braking function. I just want normal CC I don't want some stupid computer applying the brakes. No way in hell I would be okay with Active CC.

I think you need to try it first. I have it and enjoy using it on heavy traffic roads.

Mine works great and I like it. To each his own.

Once ACC hardware is installed at the factory, then you can't turn off ACC in the United States, according to BMW Support. I opened an incident about it months ago, and they couldn't believe it either. They literally wouldn't believe me when I explained how it works in the US, during a couple phone calls. They told me they'd take a mule out on I-70 near Columbus and try it out, and then call me back with a solution... which they never did. It's infuriating. The ability to turn off ACC and return to "normal" CC at your choosing, and for your own safety, is non-US-market button behavior only. So, yes, it must be something that can be coded. BTW, re: the "to each his own" comment. It's not so much that ACC is or isn't ideal for each PERSON. It's also kinda specific to a given REGION of the US, and it varies with the time-of-day. You simply can't hang back seven car lengths at 65 mph on the 101 in central California, and at rush hour. Not. Gonna. Happen. Traffic simply won't allow it: somebody will always slide into "your" gap, and then your car will auto-brake in the fast lane, creating mayhem around you. In fact, they actually have traffic metering lights on the 101's entrance ramps, just to make sure the highway is carrying its peak load at max efficiency. Following along at 3x the CA DOT traffic engineers' assumptions isn't kosher, and you'd be the only one doing it. Ditto I-95 within 40 miles of the GW Bridge in NYC. Or Boston. Or Chicago. Or pretty much any city with fast-moving rush hour traffic, with tight traffic. You can't possibly use ACC in some contexts. There are times I just turn if off altogether. OTOH, the electric auto-follow of the Max_eDrive ACC combo is mindblowingly awesome, in those places where using it makes sense (like stop-and-go, between 1mph and about 35mph). That only works on the 40e, of course. The real defect, IMHO, is the absence of the (normal CC) override behavior without coding. The button is already there. It just doesn't work, at least not in the US. BTW, it should be obvious from my other posts that I really like this car. But BMW is way off-base on their ACC-only behavior. Google "CDL Platooning" to see what I'm talking about. Even Daimler has 80,000lb rigs automatically drafting each other with cameras, comms, and telemetry. BMW is years behind their German rival's research, and the US implementation is even more conservative still. My car's ACC seems like it was designed by the US Trial Lawyers' Association. It needs a "go with the flow" button, IMHO or a recall to make that the default (i.e., coded) behavior. When everyone else is doing a fixed 69mph because that's the only CC option on most cars, you're not doing yourself a favor to be the only one braking.

I too wish BMW allowed us to turn off the ACC as it doesn't work in all situations. Has anyone come up with a solution? Can this be coded to turn off if desired?

As far as I know you should be able to code it to enable turn of by one of the buttons on the steering wheel.

What Is BMW Cruise Control With Brake Function?

When this happens, Active Cruise Control with the Stop & Go feature helps you by sounding the brakes and warning you of impending crashes. The system regulates your speed, keeps a set gap between you and the car in front of you, stops the car when necessary, and then starts the engine again as soon as the traffic situation allows.

In This Article...

Is adaptive cruise control the same as BMW’s cruise control with brake function?

The brake function is a component of the basic cruise control and only applies the brakes to the car while going downhill or otherwise to maintain the pace you have chosen. You can still cruise into the automobile in front of you. As you say, you don’t have the adaptive cruise facility that you are referring to. 23 ene 2020

Are you curious about the purpose of BMW’s Dynamic Cruise Control? Learn how to turn on and off the Dynamic Cruise Control feature to maintain a predetermined speed above 20 mph by watching this video from BMW USA.

Electronic cruise control with an additional braking function is known as dynamic cruise control. This also applies to the Curve Speed Limiter, which slows down the vehicle on curves to allow for smooth lateral acceleration. The car picks up speed and resumes traveling at its pre-curve pace. This can be adjusted by the driver in increments of 1 or 10 km/h. By adjusting the lever on the steering column or the paddle on the steering wheel, acceleration and deceleration can be changed in two dynamic settings.

Active cruise control, which should not be confused with the similarly titled Dynamic cruise control, offers an even more comfortable driving experience. It preserves not just the chosen following distance but also the intended pace. The distance between your automobile and the cars in front of it is continuously measured by a radar sensor with a 200 m maximum range. The sensor can also tell whether these cars are in your lane or another one.

The brake function is a component of the basic cruise control and only applies the brakes to the car while going downhill or otherwise to maintain the pace you have chosen. You can still cruise into the automobile in front of you. You mention an adaptive cruise facility, but you don’t have it, you say.

Use of the brake by cruise control?

The throttle is used by cruise control to regulate your car’s speed in the same manner as you would. The throttle cable and the cable used by the cruise control, which is powered by an actuator via a vacuum instead of the throttle pedal, are typically located side by side in a car with a cable-driven throttle. When the cruise control is activated, the throttle cable moves along with the actuator’s “second” cable.

Naturally, the system will be an electrical setup in a car with a fly-by-wire throttle. However, in both cases, the system is intended to alter the engine’s output, which accelerates or retards the vehicle. Usually, the cruise control only affects the throttle, never the brakes. Additionally, if your vehicle has an automatic transmission, shifting gears won’t interfere with cruise control.

Regardless of the system’s mechanics, everything is controlled by a cruise control computer, which notifies it when the automobile has attained the required speed or when it is deviating from it. Additionally, it can alert the system when the brake pedal is depressed so that it can disable the cruise control instead of trying to overpower the driver. Clever.

What is braking-assisted cruise control?

The following distance can be chosen by the driver, and the cruise control will keep that distance up to the predetermined speed. The vehicle is then slowed down and the following distance is maintained. In certain highly developed systems, the vehicle can even do emergency braking.

What is the operation of BMW Active Cruise Control?

With BMW’s Active Cruise Control, you can choose how far you want to keep from the car in front of you while you’re driving. Using the settings on the left side of the steering wheel, you may easily change distance by reducing or increasing it. The instrument panel in your dashboard will show the distance.

Has BMW adopted adaptive cruising?

I’m thinking about getting a BMW sedan, however since I frequently travel via highway, I want to make sure it includes adaptive cruise control. What makes are included as standard?

In less than two minutes, find out if your auto insurance is being overcharged.

Adaptive cruise control is a fantastic feature to have in your BMW, and the following 2021 models come standard with it:

Autonomous cruise control

  • BMW 2 Series convertible and coupe
  • Gran Coupe, BMW 2 Series
  • 4 Series BMW

Hands-on lane centering and adaptive cruise control

Adaptive cruise control, hands-on lane guidance, and hands-free lane guidance only at lower speeds

  • 3 Series BMW
  • 5 Series BMW
  • 7 Series BMW
  • 8 Series BMW

Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go is how the BMW adaptive cruise control comes to a stop. Additionally, some versions come equipped with Active Lane Keeping Assist and Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, which enable manual lane-centering steering to stop the car in specific traffic situations.

Regardless of whether your BMW has adaptive cruise control, you must make sure it is adequately covered by insurance. When you browse for auto insurance with Jerry, you may locate the necessary coverage at the lowest cost. Simply download the app, provide some information, and Jerry will search more than 50 insurers to bring you the best offers. Savings with no hassles or paperwork.

Which model of BMW offers adaptive cruise control?

BMW X5 Adaptive Cruise Control is one of the most popular options among the technologies offered on the most cutting-edge vehicles. Add the Driving Assistance Professional Package to any vehicle in the 2020 lineup to get Adaptive Cruise Control.

When was adaptive cruise control added by BMW?

Active Cruise Control with Traffic Jam Assistant was introduced by BMW in 2013. “Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop+” full speed range radar was introduced by Chrysler in 2014 for the 2015 Chrysler 200.

With cruise control, can you slow down?

Of course, if you’re travelling too fast, you can apply the brakes to turn off the cruise control and slow down, but you can only do so if you’re paying attention. Additionally, when using cruise control, it may be tempting to divert your attention from the road.

Is using cruise control when traveling at low speeds bad?

Although cruise control can be useful, it should only be used in certain circumstances. Relying on cruise control for anything other than an open, clear, and long stretch of road will decrease its effectiveness and raise your risk of getting into an accident. There are some situations where you shouldn’t utilize cruise control:

  • Wet and Slippery Roads: When it rains, snows, ices, or hails, all drivers find the roads to be dangerous. Safe vehicle maneuvering requires driving at a moderate speed and adjusting accordingly. Utilizing cruise control on slick roads increases the likelihood of hydroplaning. If you are using cruise control while you approach slick conditions, be cautious to reduce your speed gradually rather than abruptly turning it off to prevent a rapid change in speed.
  • High Traffic – Because cruise control is not designed for driving at moderate speeds, it is not appropriate for traffic that is going slowly. When you need to start and stop frequently on the road, like in heavy traffic, cruise control may result in you rear-ending another car.
  • Hills and Winding Roads: To make turns safely, you must slow down and alter your speed as you approach bends and curves. Additionally, when going downhill, you need to reduce your pace. On twisting roads, cruise control makes it dangerous to change your pace quickly.

Make sure the road conditions permit safe use before choosing to utilize cruise control to prevent any potential mishaps.

When ought cruise control to be used?

  • On extended drives, when fatigue is more prone to set in, feel free to activate cruise control. When you’re driving for a long time, you don’t want to completely unwind, but it’s alright to occasionally give your muscles a respite. Cruise is a fantastic feature that, when utilized wisely, may lessen the strain of extended driving periods.
  • When there is little to no traffic, use the cruise control. Enjoy the clean roads while maintaining a steady speed with cruise control.
  • When the speed limit remains constant for extended periods of time, just utilize the cruise control. To avoid receiving a ticket, just remember to turn it off and reduce your speed when the speed limit changes.

How do you tell if the cruise control in your car is adaptive?

1. Press the cruise control ON/OFF button on the steering wheel to activate the feature. If your car has a Head-Up Display, or a cluster display, you’ll see a white ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL icon when the system is turned on. An arc with a tiny triangle pointing through it or a speedometer with a car on top might be the icon.

2. While moving at the specified speed, press the SET button to select a cruise speed. When the system is in use, the white ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL symbol will turn green.

What advantages does cruise control offer?

Cruise Control’s advantages There is less possibility of the driver accelerating and rushing past other drivers because cruise control enables drivers to maintain their vehicle at a consistent speed. Additionally, cruise control lowers gas-wasting acceleration and deceleration and controls the amount of gasoline your engine uses.

Use of cruise control and fuel usage

Yes, generally speaking. Due to its capacity to maintain a constant pace, cruise control can help you become more fuel-efficient and can help you save on gas on average by 7–14%. In contrast, the driver’s foot on the pedals can consume more gas due to the constant acceleration and deceleration.

When should cruise control not be used?

According to Ron Wilson, manager of driver education at the Alberta Motor Association, “you should never use cruise control unless you can drive at a consistent speed” regardless of the season. “Therefore, avoid doing so if you’re in heavy traffic or on curvy routes. Additionally, you should never use it on snowy or rainy roads.”

Adaptive cruise control: How secure is it?

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, drivers who use adaptive cruise control (ACC) are more likely to choose a goal speed that is higher than the legal limit because they believe the system to be safer.

The study found that the quicker cruising speeds chosen by the technology users put them at a 10% higher risk of a fatal collision than manual drivers.

Sam Monfort, an IIHS statistician and the paper’s lead author, said: “ACC does provide certain safety benefits, but it’s crucial to examine how drivers can cancel out these benefits by misusing the system.

40 drivers from the Boston region who drove either a 2016 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque or a 2017 Volvo S90 over the course of four weeks were the subject of the study. Statistic analysis was used to arrive at the crash-risk conclusion rather than actual crashes.

The authors of the study concluded that further investigation was necessary to ascertain whether the risk associated with speeding may be mitigated by the systems’ quicker reaction times and capacity to engage in defensive braking.

The semi-automated technology is a component of a group of cutting-edge driver assistance systems found in new cars and is capable of doing some common driving tasks in certain conditions.

While certain safety-enhancing capabilities, like autonomous braking and blind spot identification, are well established, others, like pedestrian detection, are still in their early stages.

Some adaptive cruise control systems can reduce collisions, according to a 2020 study by the Highway Loss Data Institute, an IIHS-affiliated insurance research organization.

1-Four years of service included in factory-equipped vehicles.

2-Run-flat tires do not come equipped with a spare wheel and tire. Driving over rough or damaged road surfaces, as well as debris, curbs and other obstacles, can cause serious damage to wheels, tires and suspension parts. This is more likely to occur with low-profile tires, which provide less cushioning between the wheel and the road. Be careful to avoid road hazards and reduce your speed, especially if your vehicle is equipped with low-profile tires.

3-Cruise control is not a substitute for the driver's own responsibility in adjusting speed and otherwise controlling the vehicle. After evaluating the road, traffic and visibility conditions, the driver must decide whether and how the system is to be used.

4-Active Driving Assistant is not a substitute for the driver's own responsibility in maintaining safe control of the vehicle. Lane Departure Warning requires clearly definable lane markings that are not obscured by rain, snow, etc.

WHAT IS xDRIVE?

Bmw’s intelligent all-wheel drive for confidence in every condition..

  • Intelligent All-Wheel Drive
  • Dynamic Stability Control
  • Dynamic Traction Control

BMW's xDrive helps you navigate the road on your own terms from hot summer drives to navigating a polar vortex. The xDrive system uses your driving data to automatically relay power to individual wheels for optimal traction and control. Meaning you can still conquer every corner in any season.

When you hit a slick stretch of road, your natural instinct is to steer against the slip – and that can make a skid even worse. xDrive’s Dynamic Stability Control takes over when traction loss is detected by applying each individual brake as needed in milliseconds. That means more stability for your BMW, and more driving confidence for you.

The winter’s harshest days can sometimes lead to a situation where you’re stuck in snow. Dynamic Traction Control, a part of the Dynamic Stability Control system, provides the necessary wheel spin and brake adjustments to keep you moving forward without losing power. This action keeps you in complete control of your BMW, especially in exceptional situations.

2024 BMW X5: A Trim Comparison

B uckle up for the new 2024 BMW X5. The mid-size SUV fuses luxury, performance, and cutting-edge technology into one irresistible package. A step up in size above the popular BMW X3, the X5 is one of the best SUVs in the luxury segment.

2024 BMW X5 trim Comparison

The 2024 BMW X5 offers robust acceleration, spectacular handling, extensive standard luxury features – and a slew of options for every trim. From miles per gallon to a long list of safety tech to choose from, find out which BMW X5 is right for you!

sDrive40i and xDrive40i

The base 2024 BMW X5 sDrive40i starts at $65,200. It comes standard with rear-wheel drive and boasts a 375-horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder engine. In terms of fuel economy, it gets 23 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. The automatic eight-speed transmission is a mild hybrid system that provides a small horsepower boost.

The xDrive40i features the same engine with virtually the same horsepower and fuel economy. It starts at $67,500.

Standard features are plentiful in the X5, even with this base trim. Like all models, the sDrive40i comes with a brand-new curved 14.9-inch infotainment display, with smartphone integration navigation and satellite radio. On top of that, the base X5 includes a 10-speaker audio system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a power-adjustable steering column, dual-zone climate control, customizable ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof. The synthetic seats are heated, and the driver’s seat is power-adjustable (with memory settings). Other standard features include a power rear liftgate, adaptive LED headlights, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Basic driver assistance features include forward collision warning, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors.

With the addition of the Driving Assistance Professional Package, you’ll get extra assistance features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, front cross-traffic detection, and automatic lane change. And even hands-off driving up to 85 mph!

For those of us with less-than-desirable parking skills, there’s finally a solution: the Parking Assistance Package.  This adds self-parallel and perpendicular parking, a 360-degree Surround View monitor, and Active Park Distance Control.

The Premium Package gives you remote start, a head-up display, LED lights, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system.

In addition to those packages, you can choose from individual features such as a panoramic Sky Lounge LED moonroof, massaging seats, and quad-zone climate control.

The plug-in hybrid 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e, starting at $72,500, utilizes the same engine in the base trims. It comes paired with a 194-horsepower electric motor, providing a combined 483 horsepower. The 25.7-kWh battery provides enough energy to allow the X5 to travel up to 40 miles on electric power alone.

All-wheel drive comes standard with this trim and it builds upon many of the features in the X5 xDrive40i. Some of the features gained at this trim level include, a fast charger, 2-axle air suspension, an acoustic sound generator for warning pedestrians, and a unique instrument cluster.

The 2024 BMW X5 M60i amps up the performance of the X5 in a big way. The vehicle comes standard with a 523-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine. Like the base trim, it comes with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

On the inside, you’ll get heated and ventilated multi-contour sports seats, the premium Harman Kardon sound system, and heads up display.

Next, the M60i starts at just $89,300, but some enticing optional packages can make the cost go up even further.

The M Sport Package adds numerous performance upgrades. Some of these upgrades include an adaptive M Sport suspension, exhaust, brakes, a differential, and 20-inch M Star alloy wheels.

At this level, the X5 offers a 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, 2-axle air suspension, a heated steering wheel and front armrests as further options.

M Competition

Finally, also utilizing the mild-hybrid system, the specially tuned 4.4-liter V8 in the M Competition generates 617 horsepower. The M Sport 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, adaptive suspension, and 21-inch alloy wheels add further to the vehicle’s performance enhancements. On top of that, the M Shadowline lights, M Servotronic steering, and Track Mode drive settings really let you get the full driving experience.

The M Competition model starts at $122,300. It includes the Parking Assistant Professional Package with driver recorder, Merino leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped dashboard, and carbon-fiber interior trim.

Additionally, other options like M Compound brakes and 21- or 22-inch wheels come available.

cruise control on bmw x5

After significant updates including a full exterior and interior makeover last year, the mighty M SUV marches into 2025 mostly unchanged. The 2025 BMW X5 M Competition offers little customization: two packages (Executive and Driver Assistance Professional), a Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, your choice of brake caliper color, a no-charge Mobility Kit, and the ever-present $2,500 M Driver’s Package. Our review of the X5 M facelift is overall favorable, even if nothing changes year-over-year.

2025 BMW X5 M Competition Engine, Transmission, and Performance

X5 M in motion

The newest X5 M Competition uses a 4.4-liter V8 engine ( S68 ) with twin turbochargers and 48-volt hybridization that smooths acceleration and improves efficiency. Its 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque allow the SUV to fly from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. M xDrive all-wheel drive and a snappy eight-speed automatic transmission with Launch Control help there. Acceleration is identical to that of the competing AMG GLE 63 S and   Audi’s RS Q8.

2025 BMW X5 M Competition Fuel Economy and MPG

2025 X5 M in Wildberry Metallic

The EPA says that the 2025 BMW X5 M Competition chugs fuel at a rate of 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg when cruising the highways. Combined, 15 mpg is a safe bet. The 2024 RS Q8 – which is due for an update this year – returns similar figures, 13/19 for a combined 15 mpg. The Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 63 S improves on it even more, for 15 mpg city and 19 mpg highway (16 combined). Fairly obviously, this is the wrong segment for efficiency-minded shoppers to be shopping in.

Interior and Cargo Space

Interior of the X5 M

Last year’s LCI (Life Cycle Impulse; BMW-speak for mid-life cycle refresh) to the X5 M brought it a striking new interior. It retains a curved display – like what you’ll find in the iX and i5 – powered by iDrive 8.5. M-specific details like badging, sport seats, configurable M1 and M2 buttons, and generous use of carbon fiber set it apart from more pedestrian versions of the truck. The Executive Package ($3,100) adds a panoramic LED roof, soft-close doors, massaging and heated seats, sunshades, and more. It’s worth adding. With 72.3 cubic feet of space to play with, the X5 M falls a foot or so short of the GLE 63 S (74.9 cubic feet). It bests the RS Q8 and its coupe-like roofline, allowing only 60.7 cubic feet of space.

2025 BMW X5 M Competition Technology and Connectivity

2025 bmw x5 m interior - tech and screen

The standard curved display comprises a 14.9-inch center display and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Some M-specific goodies, like MDM (M Dynamic Mode, essentially a 50/50 traction control setting), a special head-up display, and M Drive allow pilots to customize the driving experience slightly more.

Every 2025 BMW X5 M Competition comes with voice controls, navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, MyBMW app integration, a wireless device charger, and a personal hotspot. While this laundry list of features sounds impressive—and it is—there isn’t much that separates the vehicle from the GLE 63. The X5 M has a bit more built-in than the Audi RS Q8, and as an added bonus, the optional Bang & Olufsen sound system ($3,400) is $1,500 less.

Safety and Driver Assistance Features

X5 M in green

The usual driver aids come standard on the 2025 X5 M Competition. Active Driving Assistant, BMW’s name for its suite of driver assistance features, includes Frontal Collision Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, and Speed Limit Info displayed in the gauge cluster/HUD. BMW Assist eCall and a surround-view camera system are also standard. The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Active Lane Keeping Assistant, and Traffic Jam Assistant. At $1,700, we’d skip it unless you plan to cart your X5 M through traffic frequently.

2025 BMW X5 M Competition Pricing

2025 BMW X5 M front end look, in Wildberry

The biggest and baddest BMW M SUV starts at $124,800. A Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid sets you back around $25K more and is 0.2 seconds quicker to 60 mph. The Audi RS Q8 starts at $125,800 and offers a very similar powertrain and features with less storage space. The GLE 63 S starts at $127,700. The X5 M60i – a step below but still using a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 – starts at $90,000. It’s not a bad in-between, but if you’re really looking for the most dynamic SUV, the true-blue X5 M is the only way to go.

2025 BMW X5 M FAQ

The BMW X5 M is quick, thanks to 617 horsepower under the hood. It can hit speeds of up to 180 mph when equipped with the M Driver’s Package.

The 2025 BMW X5 M starts at $124,800 before taxes, destination, and handling.

The 2025 X5 M has a unique front grille, available staggered wheel and tire setup, oval quad exhaust tips, special badging, and bumper designs that set it apart from every other trim.

Since its inception, the X5 M has only been powered by a V8 engine, and the new 2025 model is no exception.

BMW says the super-SUV accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds.
