What does Nationwide travel insurance cover?

What does nationwide travel insurance cost, what isn’t covered by nationwide travel insurance, can you buy a nationwide plan online, is nationwide travel insurance worth it.

Are you considering purchasing travel insurance for your next vacation? It could be a good idea, especially in an era of overbooked flights, travel delays and lost luggage. Insurance company Nationwide can sell you travel insurance, which will cover you in the event that things stray from the plan. 

Let’s take a look at Nationwide travel insurance, the policies available and the benefits that they provide. 

Nationwide offers two different travel insurance plans for its customers: an Essential option and a Prime version. As the name implies, Prime provides more coverage and is more expensive. 

With the essential plan, you'll have benefits like trip cancellation or interruption, coverage for medical emergencies and a fixed fee for delayed/lost luggage. The prime plan includes missed connection reimbursement, and generally, a higher reimbursement amount per benefit.

To do a proper Nationwide travel insurance review, we input a search for a 28-year-old from Michigan traveling to France for three weeks on a $7,000 trip. 

A quick Nationwide travel insurance review shows that you’ll see quite a few more benefits associated with the Prime plan, though neither option is especially cheap. Coverage areas that are missing from the Essential plan include missed connection reimbursement, itinerary change reimbursement and 24-hour AD&D insurance, though this last one can be added on. 

The Essential plan also sees significant drops in the monetary reimbursement you can expect when things go awry. Despite being only 38% cheaper than the Prime plan, coverage is significantly stripped down. You can especially see this with baggage delay ($100 versus $600), lost baggage ($600 versus $2,000) and trip delay ($600 versus $2,000). Trip cancellation is basically the only coverage area that remains the same — 100% no matter which plan you choose.

Additional options and add-ons

No review of Nationwide travel insurance would be complete without mentioning add-ons. Your available options will differ based on the plan you choose.

As you can see, the available options and their costs can range quite a bit. If you’re looking for maximum coverage, it’s easy to more than double the cost of your original quote. 

The most expensive add-on is only available to Prime policyholders. Cancel For Any Reason insurance allows the ultimate in flexibility as it’ll refund you up to 75% in trip costs in the event you want to cancel your trip. 

Those opting for an Essential plan can also choose to purchase 24-hour AD&D coverage, which comes included with the Prime policy. Doing so includes flight-only coverage for Essential plans, though strangely that’s considered an add-on for Prime. 

Finally, rental car insurance is available regardless of which plan you pick, though you can receive more coverage with the higher-tier Prime policy. 

Many different travel credit cards provide complimentary trip insurance when you use your card to pay. Check these before purchasing travel insurance.

As nice as it would be to purchase fully comprehensive travel insurance, the truth is that nearly all policies have exclusions of some kind. This may mean that your policy won’t cover instances of COVID-19 or the decision to jump out of a plane. 

Here are some general exclusions you can expect:

Accidental injury or sickness when traveling against the advice of a physician.

Participation in canyoning or canyoneering, extreme sports or bodily contact sports.

War or any act of war whether declared or not.

Exclusions vary based on the policy and where you live, so you’ll want to read your guide to benefits carefully to see what coverages apply to your policy.

Nationwide has been in operation since 1925 and is a well-established insurance provider. They offer a range of insurance policies including car, motorcycle, homeowners, pet, farm, life and travel insurance. Nationwide's travel insurance policies can be purchased for cruises , single trips or multi-trips.

Nationwide travel insurance plans have various benefits including trip cancellation, interruption or delay, financial default, missed connection, itinerary change, Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR), medical emergencies, 24-hour accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D), pre-existing conditions exclusion and waiver, and baggage delay. Each policy is different, so you'll want to ensure you read the fine print to know your coverage.

Nationwide's essential plan does not cover Cancel For Any Reason. However, for an additional cost, you can add CFAR to Nationwide's Prime plan. With that coverage, you will be eligible for reimbursement of up to 75% of nonrefundable trip costs. Note that this must be added on within 21 days of your first trip payment.

If you need to submit a claim, you'll first call the CBP Claims Department at 888-490-7606. A representative will provide a claim form and a list of documents to submit. Claims can then be submitted via U.S. mail, fax or through email. Assuming your claim is reimbursable, you'll receive payment via direct deposit or a check.

Anyone have the above account and use it for travel insurance was just wondered if it is OK as thinking of opening account. £13 a month for worldwide travel insurance is excellent value for money and wondered if anyone has paid extra for the optional cruise upgrade and what extra they charge for medical conditions that anyone has.

We've got the flex plus account insurance and have found them to be OK. Only had to claim once and although I had to submit various bits of evidence, they did pay out. I'm on medication for high blood pressure and I think I have to pay about £30 extra per year for that to be covered. We've never paid for any of the extras such as cruise cover as you're covered for the main stuff with a standard policy. 

I know nothing about their travel insurance, but I have just transferred an ISA because of very low interest.  What I do know is that some very good savings account rates have been available for certain accounts that can only be opened if you have one of their current accounts.  I am pretty sure it is that account, so perhaps other benefits.

I chose not to open one as we did not want to use it as main account and my income was not high enough to make it possible as an extra from what I recollect.  Perhaps worth searching that sort of thing as I am not sure what the ins and outs were when I looked into the current account a couple of years ago.

You do need to pay extra for cruises out side Europe, sorry can't remember how much.

We've had this account for a few years and consider it great value.  I don't think you have to pay extra for worldwide travel - we have used it for longer cruises of 83 days and 60 days - both outside of Europe and we have only had to pay extra for the length of the cruise.

Luckily we don't have any health problems to declare so can't comment on how much extra that would be nor have we had to make a claim (hope that's not tempting fate!). My sister i law took out missed port insurance with them last year the day before they set off on the world cruise, the amount she paid was miniscule compared to what the insurance had to pay out due to them not being able to dock after the Covid nightmare began.  If you ring them for advice they are really friendly and helpful!  Something else I never think about, but it is perhaps more relevant now, you will be covered on weekends away or short breaks in this country too.

Don't forget you also get breakdown cover in the UK and Europe - that even covered our motorhome when we had one.

Agree - we've never paid any extra for this insurance to cruise outside Europe. Unless you want the added extras.

According to Nationwide website FlexPlus includes worldwide travel cover, the optional upgrade is if you want extra cover i.e. missed ports or cabin confinement etc.

We opened the account before our World Cruise last year. It is excellent value, paid a little extra for 100 days cover, £30k cancellation cover for the full cost of the cruise and a couple of declared minor medical issues. Just  before we left paid for missed ports cover. Think from memory the extras cost about £400.

You also get included with the account mobile phone insurance and car and caravan recovery insurance Europe wide.

On our return home the insurer paid up for the ports we missed, they only required a note from P and O Confirming that the stops were not made. As we missed all of the ports after Australia and a couple prior to that it was a tidy sum.

I have now been informed by He Who Knows it All that we don't have the flex plus account, just a Flex Account and the insurance cover is different.  🙄

Interesting. Has anyone over 70 paid for the age extension and how much is it ? I am 75.

I made a claim last March / April when we had to curtail our land tour of Vietnam due to Covid restrictions coming into place. I got a letter from the travel company confirming how many days we had left of  the tour when we had to fly home and they worked out how much the reimbursement should be (cost per day x number of days left).

I completed the online claim form and attached the letter, got a phone a week or so later where I confirmed what I had put in the claim. I was expecting problems or them trying to wriggle out of it with some technicality but it was agreed during that phone call of a few minutes. The monies were paid a week or so later. So no issues with them for this only claim I have made with them.

I was told that the insurance does cover cruises. I take stains so I informed them and they covered me at no extra charge for heart / circulatory issues, they classed it as a 1 medication issue which they cover for no additional charge. I don't know what types of medication or conditions fall into this category though.

Friends had 3 claims in 4 years - all for Caribbean fly/cruise holidays.  Two cancellations were the result of developing last minute infections, the third a broken leg.  All were paid promptly, no quibbles - and no increase in premiums. 

Thanks for the info, I have been searching for Insurance that would cover a world cruise, and every quote was hellishly expensive, and only covered cancellation up to £5k !!!  Had a call with the Nationwide Insurance people today who were super helpful and explained if you opened a joint account the insurance policy covers both people even if they don’t live together, so any add ons for age, cruise add on, and long trip extension etc, are per policy and not per person, also for £150 they would insure the world cruise trip up to the amount paid. I am now in the process of opening a flex plus account  😀

What number did you ring if you dont mind me asking as I would like to know cost of extra upgrade for cruise cover and what extra we might have to pay for medical conditions.

We have the barclays travel pack plus for £12.50 per month which also includes full RAC with at home call out. I think that is very good value. I had breast cancer in 2013 I wasn't covered for the 1st 2 years but after that I was and no increase in cost.

We’ve had Flex plus for several years, primarily for the annual worldwide travel insurance, although it also gives us breakdown and recovery for our cars, and mobile phone insurance for the £13 per month. I have had to pay extra for medical cover which has gone up over the last few years. I have asthma, (on 2 inhalers) high blood pressure (well controlled on one tablet) and a dodgy heart valve under annual review. Last year the upgrade cost about £250 for both of us.  (Hubby has no medical issues, we are both early 60’s) We had 2 x 3week land holidays (Peru and Japan) and had to pay small ( £15) upgrades for the cost when over £5k each. We’ve also had a couple of cruises each year- Med and Caribbean- and European/USA city breaks. It’s been excellent value. Have only had to claim once - last year on a cruise in Jan 2020 I had a mishap and had to go to hospital for a CT scan. The total bill was around £400, including the P&O medical centre costs. It was reimbursed within a week of phoning on our return without even having to send in the receipts - probably because it was a relatively low claim. We returned from holiday in Vietnam on 11March last year, just before lockdown and our renewal was waiting for us. I renewed the next day and soon realised that we wouldn’t be going very far. I think I contacted NW in June/July to ask for a refund of my additional health premium which was promptly processed. I think they no longer cover Covid for new bookings (from approx 18 March) I hope they reinstate cover for Covid and would consider them again so have kept the Flex plus policy meantime. I think the service from NW was excellent when I needed to claim (and also from P&O too)

Surely if gov advice changes to OK to travel then it doesn't matter what the conditions were when you booked. Someone on here many months ago assured me that they had phoned them and the booking date restriction does not apply when travel advice changes to being OK, but the NW wording looks quite clear to me.

This has been discussed before and my own broker dismissed it, but several insurance companies do still seem to be using this phraseology.  If you get any information on it from NW, please share it with us.

Does that though mean if you have need to claim for cancellation before the FCO advice changes, you would not be covered from loss of payments so far. 

I am thinking someone booked could become seriously ill or possibly even pass away before advice changes, so the holiday could effectively be cancelled for all parties and normally loss could reclaimed from insurance.

The travelling against FO advice is a bit concerning, I have booked a world cruise for 2023, but it was booked when the FO advice was not to travel. The Nationwide insurance says it’s the later of when you booked, or when you took out insurance. I will have to take the trip extension add on to cover for the 120 day trip, which I will do nearer the time, as it’s too far in advance to cover me for the 2023 trip, so presumably so long as at the point I pay for the trip extension there is no FO travel restrictions in place I should be covered? Flipping hope so anyway!

The restriction applying to obtaining extra cruise Cover for missed ports etc being applied only to CLIA members does not appear in the new Nationwide Travel Insurance policy document due to be underwritten by Aviva! 😊 👌

Actually the change is dreadful.   You have to buy the missed port upgrade for each and every cruise. It only applied to one cruise…not a whole year as current.

At least you can get the extra cover under the new policy, unlike the current one once Nationwide cottoned on to the fact that Ambassador wasn't a member of CLIA. I suppose if your wealthy enough to afford to go on more than one cruise per year then paying per cruise for extra cover should be a mere trifle...

UK car insurance cost up by third but just 2% in France

Disparity, along with lower increases for car cover in rest of Europe raises questions about motor insurance in Britain

UK insurers have revealed the amount they paid out for motor claims went up by about 18% last year, even as British drivers faced premium increases of more than a third – far above the rises in the rest of Europe.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) put the average increase for car cover in the UK at 34%, but many drivers have seen rises far exceed that, even doubling in the case of electric vehicles (EVs).

By contrast, car premiums over the same period rose by 6% in Italy, 5% in Spain and 2% in France, according to the recent financial results of one of Britain’s biggest insurers Admiral, which also trades in Europe.

The ABI’s admission that UK car insurance payouts have lagged far behind the rising cost of cover could lead to renewed calls for an investigation into whether drivers in Britain have been taken for a ride .

In recent months, the Guardian has been inundated with messages from drivers who have been sent car insurance renewals 50% higher than a year ago.

The steep rise in motor premiums has been cited as a leading contributor to the cost of living crisis, and has even forced some motorists on low incomes to give up their vehicles. UK owners of EVs have complained that their insurance has doubled in the last 12 months, with some facing bills of £5,000 or more .

In Germany, the biggest European car market, car premiums have risen by 11% to 13%, according to reports – a larger increase than in its European neighbours but still nowhere near the rises imposed on British drivers.

The ABI has put out endless press releases to justify the jump in UK premiums. In its latest figures on Saturday, it said vehicle repair costs jumped 31% in 2023, payouts after vehicle thefts jumped 23%, while cost of providing temporary replacement vehicles leapt 35%.

However, it also revealed that total UK payouts for claims only rose 17.85%, suggesting that insurers have been using the big jump in inflation as a cover to increase margins. The ABI said insurers paid out £9.9bn for motor claims last year – up from £8.4bn in 2022.

Both the European comparison and the ABI’s most recent data will only add to calls on regulators to examine whether British drivers have been overcharged. The Financial Conduct Authority has so far ruled out a full investigation into the market, despite calls in parliament and elsewhere.

“While we do not set or control insurance prices, we are monitoring the motor insurance market closely to ensure customers are receiving fair value,” the regulator said in March.

Carla Lockhart MP is among those who have called on the government to press for “closer scrutiny of the industry”. Lockhart told a parliamentary debate that her constituents were up in arms at “the exorbitant cost” of insurance.

Jonathan Fong, the ABI’s manager for general insurance policy, said: “Significant and sustained cost pressures faced by insurers, such as a 31% rise in repair costs over the last year, have impacted on the cost of cover.

“Despite this, insurers continue to do all they can to ensure competitively priced motor insurance. Through our recently published roadmap, the industry is working hard to combat rising motor insurance costs. And it can still pay to shop around to get the policy that best meets your needs at the most competitive price.”

Admiral said that UK car insurance premiums are higher in the UK than other EU countries because of unlimited liability. “Injury claims across the countries are different and subject to different drivers of inflation and Italy, Spain and France saw different degrees of inflation compared with the UK and have different structures,” it said.

Pre-existing condition coverage:  Pre-existing condition waivers are available if you purchase travel insurance within seven to 21 days of booking your flight, depending on the policy.

CFAR coverage: "Cancel for any reason" coverage can only be added to Trawick's Armor, Journey, Voyager, First Class, Flex, and Rental Plus plans. For example, let's look at what it would cost to insure a 35-year-old resident of Ohio spending $8,000 on a two-week trip to France. Below are the costs for each of the six different coverage options.

The cost of coverage ranges from the bottom-tier Safe Travels Explorer plan at $257.04 to the top-tier Safe Travels First Class policy for $453.33. That equates to about 3% to 6% of the total trip cost, which is on the lower end when compared to the average cost of travel insurance .

The premiums for this traveler are higher, but that's to be expected given their age. The lowest cost Safe Travels First Class plan costs $243.23 and the top-tier Safe Travels Voyager costs $574.14. That represents a cost of between 4% and 9.5% of the total trip cost, higher than the previous example but still within industry averages.

Lastly, we'll look at the premium costs for a 45-year-old resident of Texas traveling to Fiji for two weeks and spending $7,000 on the trip.

The lowest cost plan in this scenario is the Safe Travels Explorer plan, which runs $284.28. And the most expensive is the Safe Travels First Class, at $405.54. You're paying between 4% and 5.8% of the total trip cost at these prices. Again, that's right on track with the averages in the travel insurance industry.

Nationwide also offers yearly trip insurance for those that travel a lot throughout the year, as well as Cruise specific plans and annual trip insurance.

To compare the two companies, we'll put Nationwide's Essential plan beside Trawick International travel insurance's middle-of-the-road Safe Travels Single Trip plan.
