La 54e édition du Tour de l’Abitibi Glencore se déroulera du 15 au 21 juillet 2024 dans la ville hôtesse de Val-d’Or.

L’édition 2023 du Tour de l’Abitibi se déroulera du 10 au 16 juillet.

Présenté sur une semaine, plusieurs arrivées et départs sont prévus à différents endroits en région afin de faire vivre une expérience inoubliable aux 150 cyclistes qui y participent annuellement. Sanctionnée par l’Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), le Tour de l’Abitibi est la seule des 9 compétitions dans le circuit de la Coupe des nations Junior UCI à être présentée en Amérique. En tout, ce sont plus d’une vingtaine équipes à travers le monde qui se rassemblent dans l’espoir de compléter les 7 étapes, pour un total allant près de 700 kilomètres en 7 jours.

VAL-D’OR, Que. — Pierre Harvey credits the Tour de l’Abitibi, which celebrates it’s 50th anniversary this year, for getting him started in international cycling.

“The Tour de l’Abitibi was my launching pad to discovering when I had inside me as a cyclist,” the former Canadian Olympian said.

The week-long stage race, which begins Tuesday in Val d’Or in northwestern Quebec, is the lone North American stop in the eight-event UCI Junior Nations Cup series.

The 61-year-old Harvey, who won the Tour de l’Abitibi as a teenager in 1975, went on to race for Canada at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and to take a silver medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. The Rimouski, Que., native also became a top cross-country skier.

He especially remembers winning the individual time trial.

“That’s the event in which you can’t hide in the peloton and win at the end,” said Harvey, who will serve as honourary president of the event. “You ride alone against the wind and against the clock.

“That motivated me to see how far I could push. After that, I participated in four Olympic Games, but my schooling came in Abitibi.”

The Abitibi event has helped launch the careers of some international stars, including the 1995 winner of the Vuelta (Tour of Spain) Laurent Jalabert of France, 1988 Giro d’Italia winner Andrew Hampsten of the U.S. and 1984 Olympic silver medallist Steve Bauer of St. Catharines, Ont., who wore the leader’s yellow jersey at the Tour de France for five days in 1988.

Over the years, 4,289 riders have participated.

“I’m impressed that it’s lasted this long,” said Harvey. “It takes people who have fire in their hearts and quite often it’s out in the regions that you find them.

“That’s the main reason I’m happy to be back. Not for myself, but for the people who have spent 50 years believing in and wanting to help young people in cycling.”

Eric van den Eynde of Longueuil, Que., said the race has changed a lot since he won it twice in the early 1970s, with teams using sophisticated equipment and strategy that makes it like a “mini-Tour de France.

“We didn’t know that much about strategy back then,” said van den Eynde, a former Canadian national team head coach. “It was more about pedalling. You attacked, you counter-attacked. There were less organized systems.”

A book in French released ahead of the anniversary, “La Route des Champions” by Leandre Normand, Olivier Grondin et Emelie Rivard-Boudreau, gives details of every race. Abitibi region native Normand founded the race and was its general manager for the first 10 years.

Tour de l’Abitibi Celebrates 50 Years – PHOTOS of ALL Past Winners

July 17, 2018 (Val-d’Or, Que.) – The 50th edition of the Tour de l’Abitibi gets underway July 16-22 in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region. Founded in 1969 by Léandre Normand this iconic and enduring Tour has become an essential event in the development of Junior riders in Canada and around the world. As the only North American stop out of eight competitions that comprise the UCI Juniors Nations Cup, the legendary Tour de l’Abitibi has bolstered Canada’s stature internationally and hosted over 4,000 riders from 45 countries since its inception. From the first winner, Gerald Rocheleau, back in 1969 to other Canadian greats like Alex Stieda (1980), Pierre Harvey (1975), Eric Van den Eynde (1971 and 1972) and the most recent Canuck to win, David Veilleux (2005), the Tour de l’Abitibi has seen its share of international stars as well such as Michel Zanoli (Ned) winner in 1986 and Americans Bobby Julich (1988 and 1989) and Taylor Phinney (2007). Other top international riders include Laurent Jalabert (Fra), Oscar Camenzind (Sui), Denis Menshov (Rus), Andrew Hampsten (USA), Tyler Farrar (USA) and more. We invite you to enjoy this little trip down memory lane as the 50th edition, featuring 7 stages and a total distance of 600 km, will soon be underway. Logan Owen Tour of l’Abitibi Log Stages 1-4

17 year old Logan Owen is currently racing the Tour of l’Abitibi with the US Junior National Team. Here is the next installment of his time there:

The Tour of l’Abitibi takes place in Abitibi-Temiscamingue in northwestern Quebec. It is restricted to athletes aged 17-18. It is a UCI sanctioned race and is the only event of this size in North America.

Stage 2: So we started the 106km stage 2nd in every classification and were looking to take the lead. We were attacking all day and finally a group of 10 rolled off with Greg and Tj in it. TJ rode off the front of the break and put a lot of time into them and Greg got 2nd in the break away sprint getting 4th. Darville, winning the intermediates, took the points jersey and we were 1st and 2nd in gc after the stage.

Tour de L’Abitibi

Last week Lux/Sideshow members raced as part of the National team at the  Tour de L’Abitibi , a UCI Nations Cup event, in Canada. As a result of countless hours of training and exceptional teamwork, five of the six riders representing the U.S. at L’Abitibi were Lux/Sideshow riders—a clear statement of the strength of our program. The team started the season with high aspirations to represent the U.S. at this junior stage race, which is the longest (7 stages) on the international calendar, and our riders did not disappoint.

Our riders started big, blowing the race up on stage 1 with  Michael Garrison  and  Matthew Riccitello  attacking from the front group of 14 riders to take 1 st  and 3 rd , respectively—putting 7 minutes on the field.

The second stage saw a small split with Lucas Bourgoyne (KHS) and  Luke Lamperti  earning 1 & 2 nd . The stage three Time Trial had  Michael Garrison  crushing everyone taking the win, Matthew Riccitello earning 2 nd  and  Luke Lamperti  taking 4 th .

Stage 4 was a controlled race with Luke again 2nd in a bunch sprint. Stage 5 the boys defended with Luke and Lucas taking the bunch sprint for 6th and 7th. Stage 6 the team put Lucas in the break and controlled the group with Lucas attacking for the solo win and the guys riding the remainder of the group back with Luke taking 3rd.

The team’s performance was the most dominant in years with the team taking 5 stage wins, the team overall, Michael Garrison 1 st  overall, Matthew Riccitello 2 nd , and Logan McLain 6 th , Matthew Riccitello taking the best young rider overall, Lucas Bourgoyne taking the points competition and Luke Lamperti taking the mountains competition and 2 nd  in the point competition.

After this event,  Gianni  and  Logan  are heading directly to Belgium to join  Jared ,  Kyle  and  Seth  to prepare for UCI stage races Aubel-Thiminster-Stavelot in Belgium and Ronde des Vallees in France. The others will return home for a short break before heading back to Europe for pre-world Championship races in Switzerland and Belgium.
