For your security as well as Tesco’s, there are some limits on how much you can order and collect.

You can order between £50 to £2,500 online.

Tesco will email you an order confirmation, and will confirm your exact delivery date. The table below shows the earliest time your money can be delivered.

Tesco Travel Money uses the same delivery service as Travelex, so they know what they’re doing. If, however, there is a problem with your order you can contact Tesco directly and they will deal with your issue.

When you spend £500 or more online, home delivery is free.

For online orders less than £500, you pay £3.95 for delivery.

We show offers we can track - that's not every product on the market...yet. Unless we've said otherwise, products are in no particular order. Thanks for leaving a question on finder.

You can request a new PIN or a reminder if you forget your current PIN online or by phone.

Online: Log in to Online Banking, click on your account and then select Manage account in the top right hand corner. Select the account name, above the sort code and account number on the Account Overview, then choose Request PIN reminder from the menu.

Enter the last four digits of your card number and choose whether you want to get a new PIN or a reminder of your existing PIN. You’ll receive your PIN number within 2 – 3 working days by post.

By phone: Call them on 0345 678 5678* and they’ll send a new PIN to you. You’ll receive your PIN number within 2 -3 working days by post. It can not be sent overseas so you will have to give the pin to your son once you have it by mail.

Please send me a message if you need anything else. :)

Cheers, Joel

Aldi has been named the cheapest supermarket for the fourth month in a row by Which?.

The budget retailer was awarded the top spot for February after beating its rival Lidl by less than £3.

Which? found a basket of 72 goods cost £125.43 on average at Aldi, while the same products set customers back £128.19 at Lidl.

Both stores were significantly cheaper than Waitrose, though, which was found to be the most expensive option with the same food shop costing £162.94.

You can see how the other supermarkets fared below...

The consumer champion also compared the costs of a trolley shop made up of 185 products.

Aldi and Lidl are not included in the comparison as they tend to stock a smaller range of branded items.

In this price comparison, Asda was the cheapest, with the mega shopping list costing an average of £460.34.

Morrisons landed in second place, with the same shop costing around £488.46.

Waitrose was still the most expensive at £522.70 -  a huge £62.36 more than Asda.

The value of the best-known cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, has reached a new high.

For the first time ever, one Bitcoin bought $69,202, surpassing the previous high just below $69,000 recorded in November 2021.

It comes, as the previous high did, as a "halving" event approaches, whereby Bitcoin production is cut by 50%.

A recent boost for the digital asset also came in January as a new product was launched that allows people to track the value of Bitcoin without owning it, something known as an  exchange-traded fund (ETF) .

The next halving occurs on 19 April.

Ahead of the budget, we've asked a selection of economists and experts what they'd do if they were chancellor. Next up is Simon French, chief economist at investment bank Panmure Gordon. He writes...

The UK economy has a growth problem. The attempt to "go for growth" under Liz Truss wasn't wrong - but it was poorly timed and spectacularly badly handled.

I would have a three-pronged approach to reinvigorating economic growth.

First, I would cut the corporation tax rate to an internationally competitive 15%. There would be no more powerful symbol that the UK is open for business - it is a policy that would attract international attention.

Second, I would scrap stamp duty on principal property transactions, and replace it with capital gains tax. This would be set at a level to be fiscally neutral over the medium term.

The UK residential market is three times larger than the UK stock market - this is a spectacularly inefficient use of capital. Part of helping the UK economy grow will be to stop every spare pound of savings being encouraged into housing - and instead back the great innovation that our universities and research agencies produce.

Finally, I would announce an intention to lower marginal deduction rates in the tax system to no higher than 55% - the universal credit taper rate. Current withdraws of the personal allowance, child benefit, free childcare, as well as student loan repayments have created some very high deduction rates that are a disincentive to work.

I would fund this policy by eliminating high and additional rate pensions tax relief - and having flat 20% level of relief across the income distribution.

We'll be teaming up with the Politics Hub team to bring you live coverage of the budget before, during and after Jeremy Hunt stands up. The budget itself starts at 12.30pm - and we'll have a live Q&A on what it means for you from 3.30pm.

Virgin Money has announced it will increase its two and five year fixed rate products within hours.

The bank has said the changes will be made at 8pm tonight and will see rates rise as high as 5.16%.

It marks the second time in a week that the lender has increased its rates and, with this round of changes coming at such a short notice, brokers will be working against the clock to speak to their clients.

Elliott Culley, director at Switch Mortgage Finance, said the move had left little time to speak to borrowers, and there was "no tangible reason" for the change.

"No big swings in the market but Virgin are running away," he said.

"Two rate increases in a week and hardly any time given to speak to clients about rate changes that can affect their monthly outgoing for potentially five years. Rate increases are understandable but with no tangible reason it is very frustrating, he told Newspage.

It comes after mortgage experts criticised lenders for withdrawing rates with little notice yesterday.

Earlier today, HSBC announced it will increase all its fixed range products from tomorrow.

Jeff Bezos has overtaken Elon Musk as the world's richest man, according to Bloomberg's Billionaires Index.

The Amazon founder now has a net worth of $200bn (£158bn) after a surge in the share price of his company.

It marks the first time the 60-year-old has usurped his rival in three years.

Although Mr Musk has slipped to second place, he is still worth $198bn (£156bn), according to the index.

The Tesla founder, who also owns social network X, has lost $31.3bn from his net worth over the last year, while Mr Bezos has gained $23.4bn.

Mr Bezos and Mr Musk are followed in wealth by French tycoon Bernard Arnault, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and co-founder of Microsoft Bill Gates.

The North Face is offering customers a 20% discount if they complete a "racial inclusion" course.

The clothing brand, known for its puffer jackets and fleeces, has launched the Allyship In The Outdoors programme as part of its XPLR Pass scheme.

On its website, it says the course "aims to inspire all of us to reflect, to check our privilege and play our part in creating a more equitable outdoors".

Made up of a series of multiple choice questions, the course has four segments and takes around an hour to complete.

It focuses on the "perspective of race and racism in Europe", "experiences of people of colour around the globe" and the "unique challenges people of colour face when accessing the outdoors".

The company states participants will also learn how to be an ally in action, how to "adopt effective strategies" and build awareness.

Sky News has contacted The North Face for comment.

Ahead of the budget on Wednesday, we've asked a selection of economists and experts what they'd do if they were chancellor. Here , Dan Squires, from investment platform Saxo, shares what he would prioritise. He writes...

UK equities appear undervalued by most standards and are certainly out of favour.

Also, UK households, pensions and insurance funds are allocating ever smaller amounts of money to the UK market.

This comes as the government has a stated intention to encourage private pension saving.

If I were chancellor, I would firstly abolish stamp duty on share purchases.

The UK is unusual in charging investors 0.5% "stamp duty" tax on every share purchase.

This is a clear disincentive to invest in UK equities.

There is no such tax applied in the US or Germany, for instance.

It reduces liquidity in UK equities and adds frictional costs that reduce returns. In a global market, it's a clear negative.

Secondly, I would launch a new UK-only ISA.

Tax wrapper products like ISAs are popular with investors. A UK-only ISA (sometimes called a British ISA) would be a new additional ISA allowance on top of the existing £20,000 and would be used to invest in UK equities.

Given the government's stated intention to sell down their stake in UK-listed NatWest, these suggestions could help drive demand for that share sale.

We'll be  teaming up with the Politics Hub team to bring you live coverage of the budget before, during and after Jeremy Hunt stands up. The budget itself starts at 12.30pm - and we'll have a live Q&A on what it means for you from 3.30pm.

Birmingham City Council will vote on a wave of service cuts and a 10% rise in council tax later today after declaring itself effectively bankrupt.

The local authority, which is the biggest in Europe, is trying to make £300m of cuts to dig itself out of a devastating hole.

As many as 600 council jobs could reportedly be lost, and funding for libraries, parks and cultural projects could be affected.

Several councils have seen their spending power fall for the coming year as central government reduced grants, inflation rose and the national living wage increased.

Birmingham council's financial troubles have been exacerbated by £760m of equal pay settlements brought by underpaid workers and the botched rollout of updated IT systems.

Council tax rises are capped at 4.99% in England - but Birmingham has been given special dispensation by the government.

It comes as Nottingham City Council approved a series of cuts to help plug a £53m budget gap yesterday.

The authority, like Birmingham, declared itself effectively bankrupt in November.

Hundreds of jobs will be chopped, social care services will endure cuts and a council tax rise of almost 5% will be reviewed over the course of the new tax year.

Warnings over the perilous state of council finances and frontline services being under threat have been issued for months, despite the government recently making an additional £600m available in the local government finance settlement.

If further funding is not forthcoming in the budget tomorrow, communities will face the consequences of a worsening financial crisis across local government, the Local Government Association (LGA) has warned.

The chief executive of Marks & Spencer has described operating under the current government as "like running up a downwards escalator with a rucksack on your back".

Writing on his LinkedIn account, Stuart Machin appealed to the chancellor to take three steps to help the retail sector in tomorrow's budget, describing planned increases to business rates as "economically illiterate".

He argued the industry's tax burden was unfair at a time when consumer demand continues to be constrained by the cost of living crisis and tax rises risked stoking inflation through higher prices at the till.

Tesco Bank Travel Money – How Does It Work?

Tesco Travel Money Cover Photo

Planning your dream vacation? Alongside your flight bookings and luggage preparations, it’s essential to ensure your travel money arrangements are in order.

If you prefer having cash in hand while abroad, one convenient option for acquiring foreign currency is through Tesco Bank Travel Money. But what exactly is it, and how does it work? Let’s delve into the details, covering the process of ordering, collection and delivery options, fees, exchange rates, and more.

Additionally, we’ll explore an alternative that not only streamlines your travel expenses but also potentially saves you money – the Wise card . It’s an international debit card designed for spending and cash withdrawals in over 150 countries, boasting favourable exchange rates and eliminating the need to carry cash around, leaving extra room in your luggage.

But first, let’s focus on understanding Tesco Bank Travel Money.

What is Tesco Bank Travel Money and How Does it Operate?

Tesco Travel Money Services

Tesco Travel Money is a service that allows you to purchase foreign currency, either online or at a physical Tesco store. This flexibility enables you to either pre-order your currency or buy it on the spot at your local Tesco supermarket, provided they have a travel money bureau in-store.

Tesco Bank boasts a wide range of readily available foreign currencies for purchase, including popular options like EUR and USD. However, if the currency you require isn’t in stock, they can place an order for you.

Here are the key features offered by this service:

  • Price Match : If you come across a better exchange rate advertised within three miles of your local Tesco Travel Money Bureau on the same day, Tesco Bank will match it. This applies exclusively to in-store, like-for-like transactions and not to rates advertised online.
  • Clubcard Prices : Tesco Clubcard holders can benefit from improved exchange rates by providing a valid Clubcard number. This perk is available only for online currency purchases.
  • Buy Back Service : If you have any unused foreign currency remaining after your trip, you can exchange it back to Tesco Bank for pounds.
  • 10% Discount on Tesco Bank Travel Insurance : When you purchase Tesco Travel Money, you can enjoy a 10% discount on Tesco Bank travel insurance.

It’s worth noting that Tesco Travel Money received the ‘Best Travel Money Provider’ award in the Personal Finance Awards 2022/23, a recognition bestowed by the public. This foreign currency exchange service is powered by Travelex.

Fees and Exchange Rates

Now, let’s explore the cost associated with using Tesco Bank Travel Money. The good news is that there’s no commission fee when ordering currency in a Tesco store or opting for Click and Collect services.

However, for certain orders requiring home delivery, there are delivery fees to consider. Here are the main charges you should be aware of:

  • Online foreign currency orders between £75 and £149.99: £4.99 delivery fee.
  • Online foreign currency orders between £150 and £499.99: £3.95 delivery fee.
  • Online foreign currency orders over £500: Free.
  • Late cancellation of Click & Collect order (less than 24 hours before the collection date): £10 late cancellation fee.

It’s essential to keep in mind that additional charges might apply if you use a credit card to pay for your Tesco Travel Money order. While Tesco Bank won’t charge you, your credit card provider is likely to impose fees for cash-related transactions, which often include foreign currency purchases.

Tesco Travel Money Exchange Rates

Tesco Bank Travel Money, like many other foreign currency providers, incorporates its margin into the mid-market exchange rate. Also known as the interbank rate, this is the rate used by banks for inter-currency transactions, considered one of the fairest exchange rates. However, it’s rarely available through most providers, except for a few like Wise.

By adding its margin to the rate, Tesco Bank generates revenue from the transaction. Unfortunately, this means you’ll receive slightly less foreign currency in exchange for your pounds. Nevertheless, Tesco Bank offers slightly improved rates for Tesco Clubcard holders when they order online.

The exchange rates provided by Tesco Bank are transparent and can be checked in real time on their website.

Do Tesco Clubcard Holders Get Better Exchange Rates?

Tesco Clubcard Membership Benefits

If you’re a Tesco Clubcard holder considering using Tesco Bank Travel Money, you might be wondering if this loyalty program can help you secure more favourable exchange rates.

The Clubcard Price offered by Tesco Bank Travel Money is designed to provide you with better rates compared to the standard ones advertised online at the time of purchase . This exclusive perk is accessible when you make your currency purchases online. To benefit from the Clubcard Price, you’ll need to input a valid Clubcard number during the transaction.

It’s important to note that exchange rates can fluctuate depending on the method you choose for purchasing your foreign currency. Whether you opt to buy in-store, online, or by phone, these rates may vary.

How to Order Travel Money from Tesco – A 9-step Guide

If you’re interested in obtaining travel money from Tesco, here’s a step-by-step guide for placing an online order:

  • Visit the Tesco Bank Travel Money website.
  • Choose your desired currency from the dropdown menu on the right-hand side.
  • Indicate whether you possess a Tesco Clubcard. If you do, you’ll benefit from enhanced exchange rates.
  • Select the amount you wish to order, either by choosing from the predefined options or entering a specific amount.
  • Review the exchange rate and the amount of currency you’ll receive in exchange for your pounds.
  • Click on ‘Buy Currency Online’
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to place your order, including entering your Clubcard number (if applicable) and payment details. Note that online orders are payable by card only.
  • Select either Home Delivery or Click & Collect, making the required delivery fee payment if applicable.
  • Await the arrival of your travel money through postal delivery or head to your local Tesco Bank bureau on your chosen collection date to pick up your order.

The Collection and Delivery Process

If you opt for Click & Collect, you can conveniently locate your nearest Tesco store with a foreign exchange bureau by entering your postcode. You’ll receive a specified collection date, and your money will be ready for collection after 3 PM on that date. Don’t forget to bring photo ID and the card used for placing the order to verify your identity.

For home delivery orders, here’s what you can expect in terms of delivery times:

  • Orders placed before 1:30 PM from Monday to Thursday: Next day delivery.
  • Orders placed before 1:30 PM on Friday: Delivery on Saturday or Monday.
  • Orders placed after 1:30 PM from Monday to Friday, or anytime on Saturday or Sunday: Delivery within 2 working days.

Remember that someone must be present to sign for the delivery of travel money orders.

The Tesco Multi-currency Cash Passport

Tesco Bank offers an interesting alternative known as the Tesco Multi-currency Cash Passport. This prepaid travel money card allows you to load up to seven different currencies before your trip, enabling spending abroad just like you would with a regular debit card in the UK. The added benefit is the ability to lock in the exchange rate every time you load, reload, or switch between currencies.

However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. The available currencies are limited to euros, US dollars, UK pounds, South African rands, Australian dollars, Canadian dollars, and New Zealand dollars. There are fees involved as well, including a £1.50 withdrawal fee at ATMs or a 2% commission on purchases made in UK Pounds.

The Wise Card – A Convenient Alternative to Currency Exchange

Wise Currency Card Lead Image

While Tesco Bank Travel Money provides a reliable option for obtaining foreign currency, it’s not the sole solution for managing your holiday expenses.

If you’re seeking more favourable exchange rates and a cashless approach, the Wise card is an attractive choice. This contactless international debit card can be used in over 150 countries, wherever Mastercard and Visa are accepted. This grants you the ability to make purchases in shops, restaurants, bars, and transport hubs worldwide.

When you use the Wise card, it automatically converts your pounds to the local currency at the mid-market exchange rate, with no additional margins or markups. There is only a modest currency conversion fee, or none at all if you already have the currency in your Wise account.

For cash needs, the Wise card allows you to withdraw up to £200 per month with no fees (up to two withdrawals). However, be mindful that overseas ATM operators may charge their own fees.

With the Wise card, you can enjoy the convenience of tapping and spending like a local, all while benefiting from a favourable exchange rate. Additionally, the Wise app allows you to manage your account, card, and expenses on the go.

By opening a Wise multi-currency account online, you can obtain a Wise card for a one-time cost of just £7, without any subscription fees. Be sure to review the Terms of Use for your region or check Wise fees and pricing for the most up-to-date information on costs and fees.

And there you have it – a comprehensive overview of Tesco Bank Travel Money and its operations, plus a cashless alternative for digital fans. If you prefer having foreign currency in hand before your trip, then Tesco Travel Money is certainly worth considering, particularly due to its lack of commission fees. Alternatively, you can conveniently visit your local Tesco store with a foreign exchange bureau to obtain your travel money instantly.

Remember, it’s advisable to conduct a quick comparison of exchange rates, as you may find more favourable options for obtaining foreign currency elsewhere but Tesco Travel Money solidifies its reputation with one of the more attractive offerings for travellers.

Oliver Ralph and Akila Quinio

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

Barclays has agreed to buy the bulk of Tesco’s banking business in a £600mn deal, as UK supermarket chains accelerate their retreat from an ill-fated expansion into financial services.

Barclays said on Friday that it would take on Tesco Bank’s credit cards and unsecured personal loans, totalling about £8.3bn of lending balances.

It has also signed a 10-year distribution deal to sell financial products under the Tesco brand .

As part of the agreement, the UK’s largest supermarket will keep its insurance, ATMs, travel money and gift card operations, which it described as “capital-light, profitable businesses with a strong connection to our core retail offer”.

Tesco’s decision to quit the business comes after rival J Sainsbury last month said it planned a “phased withdrawal” from its banking business and would instead sell financial services through third parties.

Tesco and Sainsbury’s were among a wave of high-profile retailers that pushed into financial services in the 1990s, initially through joint ventures with established high-street banks. But the bet that they could win significant market share relatively cheaply has proved misplaced.

CS Venkatakrishnan, chief executive of Barclays, said that the transaction “will help create new distribution channels for our unsecured lending and deposit businesses” and was a “further demonstration of the investment we continue to make in our UK consumer business”.

About 2,800 staff will be transferred from Tesco to Barclays. The supermarket said that proceeds from the sale would be returned to shareholders via buybacks, which along with the exit from the business and the distribution deal would be “mildly accretive to earnings per share”.

The acquisition by Barclays follows its £2.2bn purchase of Kensington Mortgages last year. Barclays and Tesco expect the transaction, which will require regulatory approval, to complete in the second half of the year.

It comes as the bank is yet to close on the sale of its German consumer finance unit as it focuses on simplifying its structure and growing key businesses.

JPMorgan analyst Raul Sinha said investing in Barclays’ UK retail bank could be “return-enhancing” in the long run for the lender, which is under pressure to decrease its reliance on investment banking.

Barclays’ UK consumer bank division generates the highest return on tangible equity, a key measure of profitability, while consuming much less capital than its investment bank, according to JPMorgan.

However, more share buybacks could have been a better option for investors, said analysts, given that Barclays’ stock is trading at a 60 per cent discount to the book value of its assets, higher than the 40 per cent discount on the Tesco book it is acquiring.

Barclays is due to update on its strategy in February, with shareholders looking for capital and operational efficiency improvements that would boost its return on equity.

Tesco chief executive Ken Murphy said that disposing of the business would generate “greater value for customers and for our business” and would allow the supermarket chain to “bring customers new and innovative propositions, which will continue to benefit from Tesco Clubcard’s unique insight and digital capabilities”.

Shares in Tesco rose 1 per cent to 282.80p while Barclays’ shares were 1 per cent lower at 141.80p by mid-morning in London on Friday.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

tesco travel money opening hours

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.

Costco Next is the chain's best-kept secret that's free for members. I've already saved thousands of dollars using it.

  • I love my Costco membership , especially because I get access to the Costco Next program.
  • Costco Next offers members limited-time deals from name brands, including Viking and Travelpro.
  • I've saved thousands buying a shed through Costco Next and regularly see 40% discounts on products.

Insider Today

I'm a huge Costco fan — the low-price staples, free samples, and the rotisserie chicken have kept me coming back.

And just when I thought I couldn't get more from my membership, I came across the Costco Next service.

The Costco Next website shows special third-party deals and discounted prices to Costco members that can be redeemed directly from whichever retailer is offering them.

It's also easy to use. I just type in my Costco membership number to sign in to the service, select one of the brands that are offering deals, and then browse until I find what I want to buy.

From there, the third-party supplier handles shipping and returns.

Costco Next has a pretty wide variety of products and brands

Costco regularly rotates out which suppliers and deals it has on offer, and items include beauty products, flooring, and gym equipment.

I've also seen offers available for discounted caskets, playhouses, bicycles, phone cases, slippers, and baby toys.

Two brands I see frequently are the premium-cookware company Viking and Travelpro, which sells high-end luggage.

I've seen recognizable brands including Case-Mate, Dearfoams, and Butter London on there, too.

The deals vary, but I've seen some really good ones

Costco Next offers vary, but I've seen many products for 30% to 50% off their original price.

Recently, I saw a 10-piece Viking cookware set for $480 through Costco Next — the same set on Viking's site cost $800. I also found a 16-piece Fortessa dinnerware set that retails for $250 available on Costco Next for $140.

Some deals are limited, though, and need to be acted on quickly. And if you see an asterisk next to an item, it might not be coming back.

My best find is still when I scored a $7,000 shed for $4,000 using a one-time Costco Next offer.

Fortunately, if nothing on the site appeals to me, I know I can check back for new offers every few days.
