I took a 19-hour bus ride from Virginia to Indiana for $68. Here are 9 things that surprised me most.

  • I took a Greyhound bus from Virginia to Indiana for $68, and the trip took 19 hours.
  • The bus was more comfortable than I thought it'd be, but I'm glad I brought a blanket and a book.
  • My bus drivers were amazing, and I felt safe stretching my legs at the various stops along the way.

Insider Today

I took a 19-hour Greyhound bus ride from Lynchburg, Virginia, to Indianapolis, Indiana, to visit one of my best friends.

My ticket cost $68, and the ride wasn't nearly as bad as I feared.

Here are the things that surprised me the most:

I was comfortable right when I stepped onto the bus

It was a frosty 27 degrees Fahrenheit on the day of my trip , but one of the first things I noticed while climbing up the stairs of the bus was how cozy the temperature was inside.

Double chairs stretched down each side, and I made my way closer to the back. Riders were scattered here and there, but the seats were mostly empty.

There was plenty of legroom — enough to easily put my stuffed backpack down and still have space for my feet. There was also a lot of overhead storage for people to keep their bags and under-the-bus storage for larger suitcases.

I was able to breeze through hundreds of pages of my book

My trip was scheduled to take a whopping 19 hours.

I'm a busy college student and journalist, so I took the chance to do something I don't often have time for — leisure reading.

I brought along Frank Herbert's "Dune" because I knew it would more than last the trip. I ended up reading over 500 pages just that day.

Other passengers were making use of the time, too. One woman on the bus knitted for a while, and others slept, read, or talked among themselves.

I kept my headphones in and listened to music while I read.

I was relieved that the stops felt pretty safe

Around lunchtime, the bus made its first real stop near Wytheville, Virginia.

It was just a Love's truck stop but, if nothing else, it gave everyone a chance to get out and stretch their legs. The other passengers scattered for snacks and food.

Thankfully I didn't feel unsafe, but if it had been nighttime or there were fewer people, I may not have ventured out of the bus by myself.

Later, during my four-hour layover in Knoxville, Tennessee, most of the other people waiting just stayed in the transfer station fending off hunger with chips and soda from the vending machines.

I decided to walk into the town and found a bustling market with a lot of food options.

A bowl of pasta hit the spot after the long day of travel, and I was elated I wasn't eating stale Doritos. The other passengers stared enviously at the cookie I brought back to the station.

The landscape was way more entertaining than I expected

I was lucky to have some cool views during my trip. The snowy Appalachian Mountains were often in the distance as unfamiliar towns passed by.

Related stories

The highlight of the sightseeing was the sunset — a red-gold sun lit Tennessee in fiery beauty.

It got cold at night right when I was trying to sleep

I'm thankful I thought ahead and packed a blanket in my backpack.

When I got back on the bus at 10:30 p.m. after the layover, I was exhausted and wanted to sleep.

The blanket helped ward off the evening chill and made me feel more comfortable.

But it was too noisy on the bus for me to get any real sleep

If you're hoping to sleep on the bus, headphones might be even more important than a blanket.

I ended up getting only two or three hours of dozing sleep mostly because of the noise. The bus made occasional stops to pick up more passengers as we passed through Kentucky and Ohio , and each time the bus driver would make an announcement for the stop.

It would've been much less disturbing if I kept my headphones in, but I was too paranoid I'd miss some important announcement.

Some of the passengers were also less considerate with their volume levels. One man played music just loud enough for everyone but the bus driver to hear. A young girl a few rows behind me cried loudly and played games on a phone at full volume.

I was still able to doze a bit here and there, but the extra noise prevented much rest.

The stations I went through weren't super clean or exciting

I had to make two transfers during the trip. One was the four-hour Knoxville layover. The next was a shorter but more miserable stop in Cincinnati.

Trash was everywhere, and no one was happy at 4 a.m. except for the bus driver.

I wouldn't want to spend more time in the stations than I did. Thankfully my friend was waiting at the final Indianapolis station to pick me up.

My bus drivers were super entertaining and made everything run smoothly

My bus driver from Knoxville to Cincinnati was iconic.

When she yelled the names of the people who were supposed to get on the bus, I didn't hear mine at first. But I made it on the bus because she made sure everyone was there.

Beneath the loud jokes and swift efficacy as a driver — she got us to Cincinnati half an hour early — she also seemed to have a heart of gold.

The driver made sure a single mother with a kid was at the front of the line to board and watched over her at the next transfer. And when no one budged to let newcomers sit next to them at stops, the driver made everyone make room.

I was blown away by how kind some of my fellow passengers were

I wouldn't mind doing this ride again , especially if I had a friend along and didn't have to spend the night on the bus. Overall, my ride was comfortable, and I never felt unsafe.

The kindnesses and good-hearted scenes I witnessed along the journey really stuck with me. This trip showed me that people will often do what they can to help others.

There was a man who realized a fellow passenger didn't speak English, so he translated the bus driver's instructions. I heard another passenger offer to help pay for someone's ticket. And one man even gave someone half his food from the previous stop.

Presumed fentanyl seized at Pittsburgh Greyhound station was cutting agent, testing shows

By Meghan Schiller

Updated on: April 18, 2024 / 7:43 PM EDT / CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Test results from what was believed to be a massive fentanyl bust in Pittsburgh last year have determined that the presumed fentanyl was actually a cutting agent.

Yan Carlos Cepeda was arrested at the Greyhound bus station in Pittsburgh last fall and was accused of trafficking more than $1 million worth of fentanyl and cocaine into the area.

Now, the state's Attorney General's Office tells KDKA that subsequent testing of what was thought to be fentanyl showed it was actually a cutting agent, even though it was stamped and packaged as fentanyl and field-tested by agents.

Investigators say that Cepeda did, however, have more than a kilogram of confirmed cocaine in his possession.

Yan Carlos Pichardo Cepeda mugshot

Cepeda was released without cash bond by Magistrate Xander Orenstein, a move heavily criticized at the time by District Attorney Stephen Zappala.  Cepeda never showed up in court and left the Pittsburgh area.

Just last week, Orenstein did the same for a local man, Hermas Craddock , who investigators say led state troopers on a chase through multiple counties. The DA's office tried to intervene and requested a bail review hearing, asking for a common pleas judge to review the magistrate's decision.

Zappala on Thursday said he thought the president judge "did take some action on that," but court administration says that's not the case, saying "no action" has been taken by the president judge regarding Orenstein. Zappala's office clarified that the DA was misinformed, and apologized for the confusion, but says Zappala remains concerned and stands by the rest of his statement, where he said, "just respectfully I don't think [Orenstein] understands [their] responsibilities of a judicial officer."

Orenstein has declined any requests for comment on these cases, but campaigned on no cash bail.

A spokesperson for the Allegheny County Sheriff's Office said Cepeda was arrested in New York City on a sexual assault charge. He's expected to stand trial there in New York before being extradited to Allegheny County to face the charges related to the drug possession.

KDKA-TV asked Zappala if the discovery of the cutting agent would change the charges against Cepeda now that he's in custody again.

"No, the charges are very, very significant. It may be a matter that the federal government wants because they like to prosecute cocaine cases," Zappala said.

When it comes to when the discovery was made that it was cutting agent used in drug manufacturing and not fentanyl, Zappala said, "The attorney general's detectives, I think told us -- I can't remember. It was prior to the time he was arrested."

KDKA-TV reached out to the attorney general's office regarding Zappala's comment on the feds being interested in "cocaine cases." They said this is the district attorney's office's prosecution.

Here’s why Playhouse Square’s purchase of Cleveland Greyhound bus station is such a big deal - Analysis

C LEVELAND, Ohio — Playhouse Square Foundation, the nonprofit that operates Cleveland’s downtown theater district, went mum for a week after saying it had bought the landmark Greyhound bus station on Chester Avenue just north of the theater district.

But in his first interview about the April 4 purchase, Craig Hassall, Playhouse Square’s president and CEO since 2022, told cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer Thursday afternoon he was thrilled about the deal. It’s a big one, and a good one, for the theater district, and the city.

Playhouse Square paid $3.35 million to buy four parcels totaling nearly 2.3 acres from GH Cleveland OH LLC at 1465 Chester Ave., that included the bus station, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Hassall underscored Playhouse Square’s commitment to preserving one of the city’s most compelling architectural treasures. He also said the purchase could help leverage the revitalization of an urban dead zone north of the theater district between downtown to the west and Cleveland State University to the east.

Elaborating on the preservation theme, he said: “The building is an absolute gem. Whatever we do, we are absolutely not going to compromise the architectural integrity of the building. It’s spectacular.’’

For example, Playhouse Square won’t scrape off the back of the bus station and turn its face into the front of an apartment tower glued onto the back in what could be called a façade-omy.

“That’s an important point,” he said. “We’re not going to make it a façade for a block of flats or anything like that.”

Built in 1948, the building is a product of architect William S. Arrasmith, who designed more than 60 Greyhound stations across the U.S. in the 1930s and 40s.

The three-story Cleveland building is a shining example of the Streamline Moderne style, a variation on Art Deco with curving, aerodynamic forms rendered in limestone, glazed terracotta, metal and glass to evoke the mid-century racecars, locomotives, airplanes and ocean liners.

Had it been purchased by a private developer with no commitment to preservation, the building could have been endangered. Securing the building’s future is the “whew” part of the Playhouse Square purchase.

No more back door

But Hassall emphasized that, “whatever we do with the Greyhound station is going to positively inform development around that site, making it a more attractive safer part of town over time.”

That’s an important statement. For decades, the area north of Playhouse Square and east of the slab-shaped apartment towers in the Erieview Urban Renewal District at East 13th Street has been a wasteland of parking lots, garages and buildings that turn their back to the street.

Playhouse Square itself, ironically, contributed to the problem in 1987 by building a 750-space garage that has the effect of a fortress wall on Chester Avenue. Playhouse Square believed the garage was vital to its success at a time when suburbanites had to be enticed downtown with safe, secure parking. But the garage enabled them to see shows without stepping on Euclid Avenue.

Of course, there’s no denying the theater district’s overall contributions to Cleveland. Founded in 1973, the Playhouse Square Foundation rescued Cleveland’s vintage 1920s movie palaces and Vaudeville houses from the very real threat of demolition and beautifully restored them.

Downtown Cleveland’s revival over the past three decades, including its emergence as a residential neighborhood with a population of 21,000 and rising would be inconceivable without Playhouse Square.

Playhouse Square has turned the district along Euclid Avenue, from East 13th to East 17th streets, into the second largest unified performing arts district in the U.S. after Lincoln Center in New York. It holds more than 1,000 events including its Broadway series on 11 stages that attract 1 million visitors a year.

Playhouse Square is also a redevelopment organization. It supports its artistic operations with income from a real estate portfolio that includes six major buildings it owns in the district, and 2.5 million square feet of office, retail, cultural, and manufacturing facilities it manages across Greater Cleveland. In 2022 the organization reported expenses of $72.5 million for the fiscal year, with an income of $78.5 million, of which 34.4%, or $27 million, came from its real estate operations.

Playhouse Square has also worked hard to bring life to Euclid Avenue with glittering marquees, a giant outdoor chandelier, and a curated mix of commercial and nonprofit tenants.

Over on Chester Avenue, the Bavarian-themed Hofbrauhaus, located at just east of the Playhouse Square garage, has added a smidge of vitality since it opened in 2014. But the restaurant’s outdoor dining area is elevated above the Chester Avenue sidewalk atop a stone wall; it adds little to the street.

Hassall wants the Greyhound station to anchor a new effort to turn Chester Avenue into a welcoming new entry to the theater district and a vibrant place in itself.

“What we don’t want to do is increase the fortress,” he said. “That’s a terrible idea.

If a transformation of the Greyhound station helps convert some of the surrounding parking lots into sites for apartments, so much the better. Hassall said he supports Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb’s concept for creating a “15-minute city” in which all needs of daily living can be found within a short walk.

“If we can help that, we’re there in a heartbeat,” he said.

Looking ahead for a landmark

Hassall felt more at liberty speaking about the Greyhound station after news stories published earlier in the day about its potential move to a new downtown location, rather than a forced move out of the urban core.

Discussions are underway between Cleveland-based Barons Bus, which operates in partnership with Greyhound, and with RTA, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Agency.

RTA may lease a portion of the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Transit Center, at East 21st Street and Prospect Avenue, to Greyhound and Barons. Greyhound travelers, a majority of whom are low-income, would still have convenient access to a downtown terminal.

Meanwhile, Hassall said, Playhouse Square has engaged Streetsense, the global consulting firm that recently completed a retail study for Downtown Cleveland Inc., to provide a marketing analysis and ideas for possible future uses for the Greyhound building.

What Hassall doesn’t want is to see the bus station turned into another theater with shows scheduled at specific times, as at Playhouse Square’s existing stages. He sees it more as a place for casual entertainment or dining experiences that he likened to “grazing.” And he wants it to be welcoming to the neighborhood and the city.

“I’m determined that whatever we do with the building it’s going to be for the residents and people of Cleveland,” he said. “It’s not simply another theater with ticketed shows.”

Hassall could also see locating several discrete attractions inside the station’s 27,650 square-foot ground floor, where a waiting area is awash in natural light. The big central room is framed by bent wood panels and curved walls that have a swooping energy similar to that of the building’s exterior.

Playhouse Square will allow Greyhound to stay in the building for up to six months as new ideas for the building emerge, Hassall said. By early next year, he’d like to see a show staged temporarily inside the station as a way to claim the space in a way similar to “Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris,’’ the musical revue that helped revive Playhouse Square in the early 1970s.

The theater district will likely replace the bus station’s roof and complete other repairs, but overall, the building’s condition is good. He said the building’s owner removed fuel tanks buried on the property as part of the sale.

Prescient early purchase

In this context of revitalizing lower Chester Avenue, it’s highly significant that the City of Cleveland owns two parcels immediately west of the Greyhound station that it now leases to parking lot operators. The city’s ownership raises the possibility of developing the parking lots in the future in tandem with Playhouse Square.

It’s also highly important that in 2017, Playhouse Square had the foresight to spend $150,000 to buy a small sliver of land with frontage on Chester Avenue between the Greyhound station and the city-owned parcels to the west. Had it not bought that small piece, it could now be faced with a holdout owner eager to set a painfully high price.

“Isn’t that amazing?’’ Hassall said of the 2017 purchase. “Who knew? I can say with complete honesty it was not down to me. But it’s great.’’

He described the 2017 deal as one sign of how well Playhouse Square was managed before his arrival from London, where he led Royal Albert Hall from 2017 to 2022.

“ I haven’t helicoptered in here to rescue a failing organization,’’ he said. “I’m here to take it to the next level. Things like this prove we can do even more.’’

Raves for a purchase

Leading players in planning, development and historic preservation were doing virtual backflips this week over Playhouse Square’s purchase.

Michael Deemer, president and CEO of Downtown Cleveland Inc., the center city’s nonprofit development corporation, said he was “very excited’' about the acquisition and the “opportunities it creates for a more walkable downtown.’’

Kathleen Crowther, director and president of the Cleveland Restoration Society, the city’s leading nonprofit historic preservation ground, said the purchase is “absolutely the result we had hoped for. What we didn’t want to happen was to see the terminal bought and scraped off for a larger development.’’

Joyce Pan Huang, Cleveland’s planning director said flatly that “Craig Hassall is a visionary. He understands how important it is for his patrons to experience a lively downtown area. He wants to see more people walking and more people biking and we’re excited about that.’’

Responding to such comments, Hassall said it was obvious that Playhouse Square had to buy the Greyhound building.

“When you look at a map of Cleveland, if we didn’t buy the bus station, we’d have rocks in our heads,’’ he said. “We simply had to buy that building. It’s just too terrific in its location for us not to do it.”

The purchase of Cleveland's landmark downtown Greyhound bus station by the nonprofit Playhouse Square raises intriguing possibilities for a dismal part of downtown.
