15 Best Things to Do in Patras (Greece)

Capital of the Achaia prefecture, Patras has a heavenly setting on its namesake gulf at the very north of Peloponnese. Modern Patras by the water was rebuilt around impressive squares after the city was damaged Greek War of Independence in the 19th century.

But up the slope is the old city, where you’ll happen upon Roman buildings like the Odeon, Amphitheatre and the Castle of Patras, which was occupied by a military force for 15 centuries straight. There’s history of an even more ancient kind at Skioessa, which has 75 preserved tombs from a Mycenaean cemetery dating back 3,500 years. Life in ancient Patras is neatly summed up at the superb Archaeological Museum, which has one of Greece’s largest collections of mosaics.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Patras :

1. Archaeological Museum

Archaeological Museum, Patras

Inaugurated in 2009, the Archaeological Museum is hard to miss from the road for its enormous metallic dome, looking a bit like a fat flying saucer.

When it opened the museum drew acclaim for the clever way it displays its artefacts, organising them in three large rooms (Private Life, Public Life and the Necropolis). Private Life has jewellery and everyday utensils from Mycenaean, Geometric, Archaic, Hellenistic and Roman Greece, a whopping collection of 14 Roman mosaics, as well as partial reconstructions of Roman houses from around the city.

Public Life is loaded with coins, statues, musical instruments, amphorae an yet more mosaics, all painting a clear picture of society in Ancient Patras.

The Necropolis deals with the tombs and the objects within them, found in Patras and around Achaia.

Three whole graves have been reconstructed, two Mycenaean from the Voundeni cemetery near Patras, and one Roman.

2. Roman Odeon

Roman Odeon, Patras

In Patras’ hilltop upper town, close to the castle is a Roman conservatory for musical performances, built during the rule of Emperor Augustus at the turn of the 1st century AD. With a brick facade on its south wall, the Odeon was connected to Patras’ Roman Forum and was actually built some time before the Odeon in Athens.

Successive earthquakes, wars and invasions took their toll, almost destroying it and burying it under the remnants of other buildings.

The Odeon was rediscovered by accident in 1889, and the restoration continued up to 1956. Now partially made with modern material the Odeon has a capacity of 2,300 and is used for music once more, notably at the Patras International Festival every summer.

3. Agios Andreas Cathedral

Agios Andreas Cathedral, Patras

This vast basilica was started in 1908, but because of the tumultuous events of the 20th century wouldn’t be consecrated until 1974. The Agios Andreas Cathedral is the largest church in Greece and the third largest Orthodox edifice in the Balkans.

The church is a pilgrimage site for Christians the world over as it contains the purported relics of St Andrew, one of the 12 Apostles.

In a chapel to the rear on the right side are fragments of the cross on which he was martyred, as well as a finger and the top of his cranium.

The piece of skull has been at the Agios Andreas since 1964 when it was sent from Rome and received with great fanfare.

Also take in the sumptuous neo-Byzantine mosaics on every surface, admiring the Madonna with Child behind the iconostasis.

4. Castle of Patras

Castle of Patras

Also at the top of the city, one of the first things that will strike you about the castle is how far you can see over Patras and the channel.

The castle was built in the mid-500s AD on the ruins of the ancient acropolis.

From the time it was completed to the Second World War the Castle of Patras was constantly armed.

A long list of cultures and civilisations have either besieged or taken the castle, among them Slavs, Moors, Normans, Franks and Venetians.

The Ottomans were in charge from the middle of the 15th century and later in the 17th-century Morean War, the Venetians wrested it from them for almost two decades before the Turks regained control, in 1715. A remarkable thing about the castle is that all of those occupants left their mark, revealing the development of military technology over the course of 1,500 years.

5. Voundeni Mycenaean Cemetery

The Skioessa neighbourhood on the road northeast of Patras is an area with signs of habitation going back 3,500 years.

Remnants of a settlement and cemetery have been discovered, in use from 1500-1000 BC. The cemetery to the southeast is the most exciting part for visitors, covering 1.6 hectares with some 75 tombs of various sizes and designs that were first excavated in the 1920s.

You can enter about ten of the tombs, and each one is labelled with details about the items discovered during the digs.

The first tomb has been left undisturbed, so you can see the skeletons of three people, knowing that they have lain here for as long as 3,500 years.

Further up at the ruins of the settlement, the view over Patras and the gulf are unforgettable.

6. Agiou Nikolaou

Agiou Nikolaou

If you’re in the mood for some shopping the lower end of this street in the centre of Patras has many of the big European chains.

On Agiou Nikolaou and the adjoining streets you’ll have H&M, Zara, Stradivarius, Sephora, Marks & Spencer, Pull & Bear, Pandora and Massimo Dutti, to name a few.

If you head southeast along the street, following the slope you’ll eventually come to the Church of the St Nicholas, next to the eponymous flight of stairs.

From here you can climb the 192 steps (take your time on a hot day) up to the castle and upper town, turning back occasionally to savour the mountains across the channel.

7. Rio-Antirrio Bridge

Rio-Antirrio Bridge

Spanning the western end of the Gulf of Corinth between Peloponnese and Western Mainland Greece , the Rio-Antirrio Bridge is, at 2,880 metres, among the world’s longest multi-span cable-stayed bridges.

It is also definitively the longest bridge of its kind in the world to be fully suspended.

The bridge opened in August 2004 and crosses not far from Patras to the town of Antirrio on the mainland, overcoming both the gulf’s deep water and the constant seismic activity in the region.

The bridge has more than 100 sensors, measuring anything from seismic tremors to the deck’s thermal expansion.

Before this structure was completed the only way across was by ferry, and by road the Isthmus of Corinth 130 kilometres to the east added hours to journey times.

Only two bridges in the world have longer cable-stayed decks: China’s Jiaxing-Shaoxing Sea Bridge and the Millau Viaduct in France.

8. Faros Patras (Patras Lighthouse)

Faros Patras

On a headland a brief walk from Agios Andreas Cathedral is the city’s lighthouse.

You may be able to tell that the faros doesn’t have a maritime role, but instead has more of a symbolic meaning , replacing a lighthouse from 1878 that was pulled down when the port was modernised in 1972. This current building is from 1999 and has a blue glow at night.

At the base of the lighthouse is a cafe and the area around it is a waterfront park, facing west and a great place to watch the sunset.

9. Spinney of Patras

Spinney of Patras

East of the centre of the city is a steep, pine-covered hill known as the Spinney of Patras.

The hill is loved by walkers and joggers for the ample shade offered by its pines planted in 1916 by an Austrian expert in forest management.

The view of the city, port and gulf is so impressive that the Spinney is often described as “Patras’ Veranda”, and there are a couple of spots to stop and take it all in.

One is the cafe terrace at the fork in the road, and another is a municipal tourist kiosk.

10. Plateia Yioryiou (Georgiou I Square)

Georgiou I Square, Patras

The recent story of Patras is one of destruction, either at the hands of the Turks in the War of Independence or frequent earthquakes.

So it’s no mystery why only scraps of Patras’ old signature Neoclassical architecture has made it to the 21st century.

Some of the few exceptions await you on Georgiou I Square, and the most eye-catching of all is the Apollon Theatre on the northeast side of the square dating to 1872. Take a seat at a shaded cafe table next to the theatre’s arcades, look over the fountains and give yourself a few minutes to see the people of Patras coming and going.

11. Roman Amphitheatre

Roman Amphitheatre, Patras

Next to the Roman Odeon are the partially excavated ruins of Patras’ amphitheatre, raised during the time of Emperor Domitian at the end of the 1st century AD. The amphitheatre was first identified in the 1870s, but archaeological surveys weren’t made until the 1990s, a job made difficult by the amount of modern development on the site.

It is believed that the amphitheatre was a gift to the city on the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Roman colony here.

The eastern side, which is the most intact, is built into the slope, and the edifice measures a total of 200 by 90 metres.

In its day the amphitheatre was known all over Greece for the Caesarea, games in which athletes from far and wide competed in a range of events like racing, pentathlon, boxing and wrestling.

12. House of Kostis Palamas

House of Kostis Palamas

A sight to keep on your radar as you navigate the centre of Patras is the Neoclassical house at 241 Korinthou Street.

In 1859 this was the birthplace of the poet Kostis Palamas.

He was one of the luminaries of the Greek “1880s Generation” literary movement, helping to found the New Athenian School together with other eminent writers of the day Ionnis Polemis and Georgios Drosinis.

But to you and me, Kostis Palamas will be remembered as the man who wrote the lyrics to the official Olympic Anthem, performed for the first time to music by Spyridon Samaras at the Athens Olympics in 1896.

13. Patras Hammam

Although now a private business, these baths also have real historical value.

They were built in the 15th century by the Venetians and later adapted by the Ottomans who turned them into a hammam.

The baths have been in continuous use since that time, putting them among the oldest surviving Turkish baths in Europe.

You can use the baths as they were intended and stop here to recuperate after a day of climbing up and down the steps to the upper town.

14. Achaia Clauss Winery

Achaia Clauss Winery

Established by the Bavarian Gustav Clauss in 1861, Achaia Clauss is the second oldest business operating in Greece after the National Bank.

One reason the winery was able to flourish was because of the Clauss’ connections to the Bavarian-born king, Otto of Greece.

The winery is built like a castle on a picturesque hillside at Glafkos about 15 kilometres from Patras.

You’ll be given an enthusiastic tour of the vineyard and the buildings, learning about the dense history of the winery and checking out giant old barrels, some of which have wine going back to 1889. You’ll get to pose in an old-time cooper’s apron, while there’s a generous array of wines available to taste, including red, white, rose and the trademark sweet red fortified wine Mavrodafni.

15. Patras Carnival

Patras Carnival

Between 17 January and Clean Monday, the first day of Great Lent (48 days before Easter) on the Orthodox calendar, you can catch one of Greece’s most famous street spectacles.

The Patras Carnival is unique in the country, and is one of the largest in Europe with a riot of masked balls, games and parades attended by tens of thousands of people, as well as all manner of unofficial side events.

The things you have to see are the opening ceremony on 17 January, the Children’s Carnival with 5,000 participants on the penultimate weekend, the Saturday night parade, the Grand Parade with satirical floats on the final Sunday and the closing ceremony, illuminated by fireworks.

Also on the final weekend there’s a treasure hunt, in which the various groups taking part in the parades compete with each other, solving riddles and questions to find clues around the city.

The magnificent chapel of the Patron Saint of Patras, Agios Andreas (St Andrew) was built in the Byzantine style, and it’s said that the church has been built on the site where Saint Andrew, the student of Jesus Christ, was killed by the Romans in 66 AD. Close to the church, there is the “Spring of Agios Andreas”, which pours out holy water. Also, the church of Agia Varvara (Saint Barbara) is impressive and has also been built in the Byzantine style. Inside, you will find holy icons and beautiful frescoes depicting saints and archangels. Also make sure you climb the 193 steps up to the Church of Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas), which was initially built in the 14th century, however, the present chapel was constructed in 1885 because the former building was destroyed.

13 Reasons You Need to Explore Patras, Greece

View of Patras from its fortress

Greece is much more than sandy beaches and ancient monuments and sites—it is also dotted with underrated cities throughout its territory. Case in point, Patras : Greece’s third largest city situated in the northwest of Peloponnese. Thanks to its university, it has a large percentage of students, but the city is much more than that. Here are 13 reasons why you should stop by Patras on your next visit to Greece.

The medieval castle.

If you are looking for the perfect spot to watch the sunset, head straight to the castle of Patras. Built in the 6th century A.D. on the site of the ancient acropolis of Patras, the kastro overlooks Patras and offers spectacular views over the city and the sea. Accessible by a steep flight of steps from the southern edge of the Old Town, the old citadel stands tall and keeps watch over the city.

The Archaeological Museum

The ancient Roman Odeon

Thanks to its strategic position, Patras became an important hub during Roman times. As such, one of the most significant sites still standing today is the Roman Odeon (or odeum ), built in 160 A.D. Located in the Old Town, the odeon suffered several earthquakes and invasions before undergoing restoration works in the 20th century. Today the Odeon serves as an open-air venue.

The Patras International Festival

A major event in the cultural life of the city, the Patras International Festival was founded in 1986. Since then, the festival has gained international recognition, establishing itself as a leading cultural event in Greece. Focusing on music, theater, film, dance performances, and visual arts, the festival attracts thousands of visitors every year, who have seen local and international artists and bands performing in the city.

The Agios Andreas Church

Dedicated to the protector saint of the city, the cathedral of Saint Andrew of Patras (Agios Andreas) was inaugurated in 1974. According to the tradition, Saint Andrew, one of Jesus’ disciples, was crucified in Patras, near the port where the cathedral now stands. Built in the Byzantine style, the church has the largest dome in the country and can accommodate up to 5,000 people.

The Ancient Roman Amphitheater

Right next to the Roman Odeon, the Roman amphitheater was built in the 1st century A.D. Considered to be another of the most significant monuments of the city, the amphitheater has undergone restoration works, and is also used as a multicultural venue. Explore it and imagine going back to simpler times, when ancient dramas and music performances were held at the time the city was undergoing a major growth.

Vibrant nightlife

Because the city is home to two universities and one technological institution, there is a large population of students living in Patras. As such, the city is filled with bars, lounge cafés and restaurants. After dusk, the streets come to life and the city awakes. You will surely spend lively evenings and dance the night away in one of its many bars.

The Carnival of Patras

With a strong Italian influence, the Carnival of Patras is a 180-year-old tradition that sees many people flocking to the city every February for the occasion. Along with floats and parades, the carnival includes art performances and, of course, a lot of fun. Visitors and locals alike dress up and compete in various games and even theatrical sketch contests. There is also a carnival for children where workshops and activities are held, making it a fun event for the whole family.

The Turkish Baths

One of the few Turkish baths in Europe still in use to this day, the Turkish Baths , or hammam , of Patras were first founded in the 1400s. Located near the Pantokratoras Church—a miniature replica of the Agia Sofia Church in Istanbul—the baths are open to men and women, and it is the perfect stop to relax after a day of sightseeing.

Apollon Municipal Theater

Another spectacular monument is the Apollon Municipal Theater. Situated in Georgiou I Square, one of the city’s main squares, the theater was designed by German architect Ernst Ziller and completed in 1872. One of the four neoclassic theaters in the country, the Apollon Theater now houses the Patras Municipal and Regional Theater, and is a micrograph of La Scala in Milan.

Achaia Clauss Winery

Forget sightseeing and instead enjoy some wine. Since you are in Patras, take the time to visit the Achaia Clauss winery , one of the oldest wineries in the country. Founded in 1861 by Gustav Clauss from Bavaria, the winery still produces wines to this day. Known across the country for Mavrodafni, a red dessert wine, the winery boasts magnificent views and a beautiful setting.

Kalogria Beach

Since Patras is a major port connecting Italy and Western Europe to Greece, it boasts an extensive coastline, with many beaches. One of our favorites is Kalogria beach, 28 miles (45km) away from the city and surrounded by the lush pine forest of Strofylia . The beach is a favorite for locals, and is a popular destination for windsurfers too. The area also includes a river forming estuaries, which makes it an ideal destination for birdwatching.

The Wall of Dymaeans

Take the chance to discover a lesser-known ancient monument too. The Wall of Dymaeans is a unique fortified Mycenaean acropolis near Patras. Mythology has it that demi-god Hercules built the wall in order to protect the land of Dyme from the invasions of the Eleans. It turns out it was built during the Mycenaean period and the defensive structure was even used by the Venetians.

Practical Information for Patras

You can get to Athens by bus or train, both in the harbor close to where the ferries are. The train takes you to Larissa Station which is on the metro line and is also walking distance from Omonia if you are in good shape and not dragging your entire family with you. The KTEL inter-city bus takes you to the bus station out in the middle of nowhere and you will probably want to take a taxi to your hotel, the port or wherever you are going. There is a direct bus to the airport though. But if you arrive by ferry your ship may have its own bus, which may get you as close as Syntagma square near the Plaka, so ask on board. If you are going straight to the Aegean islands and don't plan to stay overnight in Athens then take the train because the last stop is actually in the port of Pireaus.

Patras has an airport. Araxos (GPA) was a military airport that has gradually become more of a commercial airport with flights to and from Europe in the summer and servicing mostly private jets in the off season.

If you are looking for other hotels in Patra, as well as self-catering apartments, holiday homes and villas see Booking.com's Patra Hotel Search where you can find rates, availability, photos and more information. By booking these hotels you help support Matt's Greece Travel Guides.

The coast of Achaia from Corinth to Patras is best traveled on the small old coastal road rather then the new National road if you want to see the scenery and don't mind getting lost in some of the towns on the way. That being said, the new modern toll highway gets you between Athens and Patras quickly and is probably safer as well.

Some of the small villages on the way will be so tempting that you will want to stop for a swim or a bite to eat if you are able.

See more about the area on Matt's Achaia Page

More Information

Swift Car Rentals is not only one of the most inexpensive agencies in Athens, but they are also the only ones that will deliver your car to you and actually drive you out of the city to the National Road so you can have a fresh start without dealing with the Athens traffic.

George The Famous Taxi Driver is known world-wide for his tours of the Peloponnesos and mainland but also for his transfer service whether you are just going from the airport to the center of Athens or as far away as a town or city in the Peloponnesos.

Matt's Greek Travel Agency Page will introduce you to the best travel agencies who can assist you with putting together your trip to Greece whether you are doing the mainland, the islands or a combination of both.

Patra Sights & Attractions

Patra sightseeing: The Medieval Castle of Patra

The third largest town in Greece, Patra owes most of its tourist development to the busy port that serves ferries to the Ionian islands and Italy. The beautiful beach promenade of Patra, the interesting historical sites, the joyful Carnival in February/March and the vivid nightlife attract many visitors to this city. The most important site in Patra is the Medieval Castle, located above the Old Town and offering a panoramic view. The Church of Saint Andrew is also worth to visit as this is the protector of Patra and he is believed to be a miracle-working saint. In short drive from Patra are nice locations to visit, such as the Ancient Site of Olympia and the picturesque town of Nafpaktos.

You can see below the best Sites in Patra . You can filter them by category and location.

Medieval Castle

Located on a hill above the town, the Castle of Patras dates from the Medieval times and remains strong till today. It offers great views of the town and the port. In summer, cultural events are organized there.

Roman Odeon

The Roman Odeon of Patras was accidentally discovered in 1889 by workers and since then it has been renovated. In summer, it hosts musical concerts and theatrical performances.

Church of Saint Andrew

The church of Saint Andrew (Agios Andreas) is the most important church in Patras, as this is the patron saint of the town. This modern church was founded in 1908 by King George I on the site of a former Byzantine chapel that existed there since the 1st century AD. It is said that the church has been built on the site where Saint Andrew, the student of Jesus Christ, was crucified by the Romans in 66 AD. Close to the church, there is the "spring of Saint Andrew", which pours out holy water.

Achaia Clauss

Achaia Clauss is one of the oldest and most famous wineries in Greece. For Patras, this is a historical winery as it contributed to the financial development of the town in the middle 19th century. Founded by the German Gustav Clauss in 1861, the winery produces the best mavrodaphne in Greece, a sweet and strong wine. A part of its establishment is open to visitors, who can see there traditional equipment and ways to produce wine.

Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum of Patras was recently inaugurated and it is the second biggest museum in Greece. Although the plans for its construction started in the late 1980s, the museum actually opened in July 2009. Built on a plot of 28,000 sq.m., the Archaeological Museum of Patra has an interior space of 8,000 sq.m. and a wonderful yard with pool. The dome is metallic and a cultural park will be created next to the museum in the following years.

Apollo Municipal Theatre

The Apollo Theatre of Patras is an architectural masterpiece. It was built in 1972 by the German architect Ernst Ziller and it is found on the east side of King George I Square, one of the most popular squares of Patras.

Folk Art Museum

The Folk Art Museum of Patras opened in 1977 by the Cultural Organization of the town. Its aim is to collect and exhibit photos, clothes, tools and furniture that date from a couple of centuries ago, thus presenting the folk history of the town. Presently, the rooms of the museum are divided into sections about daily life, agricultural tools, home furniture, traditional musical instruments, and others.

Church of Agia Varvara

The church of Saint (Agia) Varvara has an active role in the local society, as it frequently organizes meetings of the pilgrims and lectures on religious subjects. The church is impressive and it has been built in the Byzantine style. Inside, it hosts valuable icons and beautiful frescoes depicting saints and scenes from the Bible.

Church of Agios Nikolaos

The church of Saint (Agios) Nikolaos is present in the history of Patra since the 14th century. However, the present chapel was constructed in 1885 because the former building was destroyed in 1811 when a gunpowder storehouse inside the Castle of Patras exploded.

15 of the Best Towns and Cities to Visit in Greece

From historic hillside cities to island destinations, these are 15 of the best towns and cities to visit in Greece.

More than 27 million travelers made their way to Greece in 2022 , visiting the country's gorgeous islands and coastlines, rural towns, and historic capital city of Athens. One look at its landscapes and it's easy to see why travelers dream of visiting Greece — but there's so much more to this Mediterranean nation.

"Everyone knows that Greece boasts stunning crystalline waters that make you want to dive right in and historical sites that whisper tales of the past. Its culinary delights are a perfect way to wrap up a day of exploring its unique cultural riches and vibrant art scene, but what truly sets Greece apart is its people," Christos Stergiou , a travel advisor with True Trips, shared with Travel + Leisure . "Greeks have this incredible gift called philoxenia: hospitality taken to a whole new level. Our True Trips guests always describe the feeling of having new local friends who'll go above and beyond to make their journey unforgettable."

Ready to plan your getaway? Here are 15 of the best cities to visit in Greece.

Yes, a visit to Athens feels obvious, because not only is it the capital city, but it’s also home to the international airport you’ll likely fly into on your visit. That said, Athens is well worth a trip in its own right, as it’s home to some of the most important historical sites on Earth, including the must-see Acropolis. Need more? Here’s how to spend one perfect day in Athens .

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki, located in the northern part of the country, offers a blend of history and youthful energy that few cities can match. “I would recommend Thessaloniki for its long and epic history,” Peter Sommer, founder of Peter Sommer Travels , shared. “The historic center of Thessaloniki is filled with an extraordinary series of ancient monuments, many of them part of an imperial palace complex built by the Roman Emperor Galerius and vast in scope."

Sommer added that there are several museums to visit here, including the Museum of Byzantine Culture and the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. “But history and archaeology aren’t the only reasons to come to Thessaloniki. It’s justly famed for its gastronomy,” Sommer added. “You can savor a huge selection of glorious local dishes and sample a cornucopia of excellent local wines.”

Drive two hours east of Thessaloniki to find another northern city worth exploring — Kastoria. The scenic city sits perched on Lake Orestiada between the Grammos and Vitsi mountains. Visitors can enjoy peaceful boat rides on the lake with any number of outfitters lining the shores, or just watch the local fisherman go to work each day to reel in the catch. Or, book a tour with Adventures With Wine to bike the lake’s shoreline and see all the hidden nooks worth exploring.

“Ioannina truly shines as a city that's a hidden treasure, especially for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers,” Stergiou shared of the city that sits on Lake Pamvotida. It’s a spot that has inspired many creative talents thanks to its epic vistas, but more than that, Stergiou explained, it’s a fantastic home base for exploring more of the northwest region of Greece.

“In addition to the beautiful lake that stands proud as the city’s landmark, the Byzantine castle, the scenic historical center, and the lively neighborhoods, Ioannina is a gateway to countless incredible experiences within a drive of an hour or two. From there, you can take daily trips to some of the most beautiful villages in all of Greece, such as Metsovo or captivating Zagorohoria, filled with breathtaking landscapes and charming stone houses.”

Kalamata, a city well-known for its olive production, is a place where travelers can get lost — in the best way possible. Come stroll its winding cobblestone streets, explore the castle, and visit museums like the Modern Greek Art Gallery for a well-rounded city escape in the Peloponnese region.

Kalambaka, a city located in central Greece, is famous for its unparalleled view of the stunning Meteora. The city sits at the base of the towering rock formations topped with historic monasteries that date back as early as the 11th century. The complex of monasteries is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , and you can visit many for a small fee.

There are more than 6,000 Greek islands , and while many come with small populations, the island of Rhodes is positively metropolitan thanks to the city of Rhodes. Home to some 50,000 people, the city is famed for its ancient history and the duality of its New Town and Old Town. While there’s nothing wrong with New Town, Old Town is a walled-off time capsule to the past, and it's one of the largest remaining medieval settlements in Europe.

Nafplio, located in the eastern Peloponnese, is a seaside dream packed with Venetian architecture to explore. As Alys Colayera, lead travel expert for Greece at Black Tomato , shared, it’s a “great place to wander through the old alleyways, grab a strong cup of Greek coffee at a local coffee shop in the square, and take a boat to Bourtzi Castle if you are interested in architecture and history.” As for the name of the town, Visit Greece explained that it comes from its mythological founder, Nafplios, one of Poseidon's sons.

One more island city to explore is Chania on the island of Crete. It too is famed for its Venetian harbor and quaint old town. Explore its cobblestone streets, duck into museums like the Maritime Museum of Crete , and shop for souvenirs in its endless boutiques. Pro tip: Leather goods are famously great here, so go ahead and splurge on a bag or a pair of shoes.

While Larissa has a population of more than 130,000 people, it remains a place well in touch with Mother Nature. This city in central Greece is an agricultural hub, growing vegetables, grains, fruits, and more, so it's a great place to dig into some Thessalian cuisine. While in town, explore the Ancient Theatre of Larissa , dedicated to the god Dionysus, to learn more about the area's ancient history.

History abounds in the southern city of Corinth, thanks to well-preserved ruins including the iconic Temple of Apollo and the Acrocorinth fortress. Just an hour from Athens, Corinth and the surrounding coastal towns make a perfect day trip from the capital city, says Colayera.

If you’re making your way to the islands, odds are you’ll pass through the port city of Piraeus. Dozens of ferries come in and out of the harbor each day, but before you board one, spend a little time exploring the city by visiting places like The Hellenic Maritime Museum , which showcases Greece's rich seafaring heritage.

Head north along the Aegean coast to Kavala, a hillside city with gorgeous beaches, sweeping vistas, and an exciting mix of ancient history and modern city life. You can’t miss its imposing aqueduct, which runs for almost 1,000 feet and dates to the 16th century. Once you’re done viewing that, head straight to The Acropolis of Kavala to learn more about this city’s fascinating history.

Find the party in Patras, a university port city in western Greece. Yes, of course, you’ll find history here, including inside the Archaeological Museum of Patras , which showcases goods from the surrounding region dating back to prehistory. But in Patras, you’ll also find a bustling (and modern) nightlife scene across several neighborhoods, including down Riga Feraiou Pedestrian Street, where you can snag a delicious bite of Greek food, too.

Explore one of the most beautiful places in Greece when you plot a trip to Corfu Town on the eastern coast of the island of Corfu. Here, travelers can explore the historic architecture that earned Old Town of Corfu a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Tour the fortresses, stroll through the town’s central market, and visit Spianada Square, the largest square in Greece.
