Tour Homes & More!

The benefield house • 1009 s. line street, the painted ladies of jefferson • 403 e. walker street.

The Benefield House is a true gem of history and hospitality. The J. H. Benefield, Sr. home was known as the "Gay 90's" house because of the many social affairs that were held in the drawing room when Jefferson was a leading port in Texas. It is a Queen Anne Victorian style house, with fine architectural details, as is typical of the spacious old homes built around the turn of the 20th century.

The Painted Ladies of Jefferson, formerly known as Captain's Castle, also known as the Rogers-McCasland home, was so named by Captain Thomas J. Rogers, a confederate officer and local pioneer banker. In the early 1870's he combined two older houses, one already located on the present site (the back part of the existing structure) and the other, an imposing landmark of Tennessee Planters Architecture (the two-story front portion), he moved across town on log rollers, with oxen, from down on the river front.

The Tarry House • 419 Polk Street

The sherrill-benefield house • 504 w. austin street.

The Tarry House is an American Craftsman style home which emerged between 1900 and 1929. These homes were a backlash against the Industrial Revolutions mass-produced Victorian architecture, which prized ornamental decoration as opposed to the Craftsman's natural and simplistic form. The Craftsman homes were very popular in California and the Midwest, however, the Tarry Home, built in 1919 by Radford Tarry, is purported to be the oldest brick Craftsman in East Texas.

Of Victorian/Farmhouse architecture, the Sherrill-Benefield House was built by Benjamin F. Sherrill just before the turn of the century in or around 1895. Mr. Sherrill served as Jefferson's mayor at one time and was still living there in 1900, according to the census. A fire occurred early in the 1900s that burned the top story and was rebuilt as the siding on the second story is different, which leads to its charm.

Take a look inside one of the houses on the Jefferson, Texas Candlelight Tour of Homes

tour of homes jefferson texas

Jim and Joanne Stacey were looking to retire to a small town after spending years in Houston, Texas. In May of 2017, that search ended when the couple visited the Jefferson Historical Pilgrimage Home Tour in Jefferson, Texas.

Jim and Joanne Stacey sit on the front steps of their home, Oak Leif Manor, photographed on December 8, 2021. The home will be on the Jefferson Candlelight Tour Of Homes.

The town was perfect but the homes available were not, they were either too big or too small. Joanne drew out a plan based on her love of Revival-style homes, then hired an architect and a builder to create what is now called Oak Leif Manor.

This Christmas will be the Stacey's second in the house, and this year they are sharing it with others by being part of the  Candlelight Tour Of Homes.

They are one of the four homes on the tour that has decked the halls for visitors to soak in all the Christmas spirit.

"The whole idea is for the decorations, not the house or the antiques, it to see how they decorate the home (for Christmas)," said Mary Nash, member of the Historic Jefferson Foundation that organizes the Candlelight Tour of Homes.

For the Stacey's that means sharing the extensive Santa collection they have acquired through the years.  There is the Santa who loves wine, large Santa's in the hall and there are Santas that depict the counties they have traveled to.

In the dining room, the Twelve Days of Christmas serves as inspiration for a delightful display.  A large swan becomes the centerpiece on the table as golden pears dangle above. The bedroom across the hall is the angel room, another favorite among the visitors.

"This is a nice way to give back to the community that we have fallen in love with," Joanne said.

The event began last weekend and Saturday, Dec. 11. Tickets can be ordered online or at the candlelight headquarters located in the Murphy Building at 116 W. Austin Street.

Take a tour of the Historic Southside Neighborhood

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - Join the residents of College Station’s oldest residential development for the Southside Historic Neighborhood Home Tour!

The tour is happening on Saturday, April 6 from 11am to 4pm.

Explore four homes built in the 1920s through 1950s, see original features, learn their stories, and view thoughtful restorations. Discover the historical significance of an additional five “campus homes” built on the Texas A&M campus between 1891 to 1918 and moved to the Southside Neighborhood between 1941 to 1948.

You can find a more comprehensive history of the neighborhood here.

Tickets are available for purchase here. Tickets are $20 per person in advance or $25 on the day of the event.

Tickets are non-refundable. In case of inclement weather, the tour will be moved to our rain date, Sunday, April 7, from 1pm to 5pm.

Proceeds from the tour will go to preserve and promote this historic neighborhood.

All guests, including those with pre-purchased tickets, must check in at Brison Park, west side along West Dexter Drive, or at the Barbara Bush Parent Center to receive a wristband and tour booklet before proceeding to various homes. A printed or mobile receipt is needed to receive a wristband, or tickets may be purchased at the park.

Tour guests may use street parking throughout the Southside Historic Neighborhood, or the Barbara Bush Parent Center parking lots located at 1200 George Bush Drive.

You can find more information about the event here.

You can contact the Southside Historic Home Tour organization using the contact form.
