Ushuaia cruise port

Region South America

Local Time 2024-04-23 17:12

Port Ushuaia cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Ushuaia, Argentina. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Ushuaia is a cruise port (including homeport for cruises to Antarctica from Argentina) and city on Beagle Strait, with population around 60,000. It is also nicknamed "End of the World" for being South America's southernmost city. Ushuaia is also the capital of Argentina's Tierra del Fuego province.

Ushuaia and Punta Arenas are the two departure ports for voyages to the Antarctic Peninsula and the British overseas territories Falklands/Malvinas and South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands . Regularly scheduled seasonal programs are operated by Quark Expeditions (polar ship travel company).

The above map shows some of the most visited destinations on Antarctica-based itineraries leaving from Punta Arenas and Ushuaia. Ushuaia is also among the ports of call on voyages that include cruising through the Patagonian channels and Chilean fjords in the Tierra del Fuego provinces of Chile and Argentina.

Cruises to Antarctica are operated mainly with smaller-sized expedition ships and ice-class superyachts. While these voyages depart from Ushuaia, most of the Antarctic cruise package deals are inclusive of international flights to and from Buenos Aires (Argentina's capital city) and also of domestic flights - between Buenos Aires and Ushuaia (as homeport). This also explains the higher prices on these seasonally offered and most unique cruise tours.

Port Ushuaia (locode ARUSH) is also homeport/departure port for most roundtrips to the UK's Falkland Islands and a major port of call included in many voyages in South America. In season 2008-2009, ~95% of the Antarctic cruise ship tourism was concentrated here. Ushuaia's busy cruising season starts in November (or in late October) and ends in March.

During the pre-COVID season 2019-2020, the cruise port handled a total of 450 cruise ship calls. For the post-COVID season 2022-2023 (extended from October thru March), the cruise port had booked 540 ship berthings with estimated ~200K tourists.

In May 2023, to the Tierra del Fuego's governor was presented a proposal for a new cruise terminal. The project (estimated at ~US$36 million) will be funded by federal sources and could be completed in a 3-year period. The new passenger terminal will have max daily capacity ~8000 tourists. The building will house communal and commercial areas, a cultural zone, a VIP lounge, and all standard cruise facilities.

For season 2023-2024 (September 24th through April 13th), the cruise port had scheduled a total of 548 ship calls (booked berthings) with estimated ~195,000 tourists - new records for both calls and visitors. Of all visits, 436 ships were to visit Antarctica, 51 were to circumnavigate South Amaric/traverse both oceans (Atlantic and Pacific), and 58 were regional vessels touring the Tierra del Fuego's channels and fjords.

Ushuaia cruise terminal

Port Ushuaia's cruise ship terminal is located in downtown (Maipu – the Coastal Avenue). Shopping lovers will be pleased to find that the city's main street (San Martin) lined with shops is just a block away from the dock.

At the end of the cruise port, there are taxis. Their rate is not fixed, so you have to negotiate. There is also a bus stop. However, the best way to explore the city is by walking.

The official language is Spanish, and the currency - the Argentinian peso.

Facilities in the ship docking area of Port Ushuaia include a few shops (be aware of higher prices than those in the city), Internet and phone kiosk. There is a tourist center at the end of the dock.

You can also visit the nearby booths and arrange boat trips and excursions to some of the area's major attractions.

For those who want handmade gifts, there are some shops at the left end of the dock.

Just before Maipu, there is a beautiful small square where you can sit on a bench and enjoy the amazing view of the sea and the mountain.

Tierra del Fuego National Park spreads 63000+ hectares. It starts from the Beagle Channel and goes to the border with Chilli. At the northern border is Fagnano Lake (aka Lago Kami).

Beagle Channel (popular for boat excursions) is named after Charles Darwin's ship HMS Beagle used to explore the region in the 1830s.

Maritime Museum (on Yaganes y Gobernador Paz) houses a great collection of famous ships’ scale models.

Military Prison (on Yaganes y Gobernador Paz) was operational between 1902 and 1947. Currently, it houses cut-outs and mannequins in its cells.

San Juan de Salvamento Lighthouse (on the Isla de los Estados) dates from 1884. It was famous with the name “End of the World Lighthouse” because of Jules Vern’s novel.

End of the World Museum (on Avenida Maipu 173) houses an extensive collection of artifacts. Explore the natural history of the region and the aboriginal life.

Lake Escondido is just 50 km from the cruise port.

FREE Tierra del Fuego National Park Immersion

Exploring tierra del fuego national park pre-expedition free cultural immersion.

Journey through Tierra del Fuego’s natural beauty from the comfort of a coach. Along the way you may see some of the extraordinary wildlife that has made the region home. From the Magellanic woodpeckers of the forests to the penguin colony of Martillo Island, Tierra del Fuego National Park offers nature lovers a delightful slice of Patagonia wildlife. The region is home to at least 50 bird species, including the austral parakeet and Andean condor. Eagles can sometimes be seen soaring over the Beagle Channel. Mammals such as the guanaco, red foxes, muskrat and even small South American camel have been seen wandering the landscapes of the park.

If you find yourself with free time, you can follow one of the many hiking trails found throughout the park that cater to all levels of adventurers, including the shorter Sendero Paseo de la Isla Trail to a more advanced hike at the Cerro Guanaco Trail. Whichever route you may choose to take, each offers its own breathtaking views of natural wonders.

HIKING  – Follow the Hito XXIV Trail along the shores of Lago Roca, reaching Milestone 24 demarking where Argentina and Chile meet. Or take the shorter path of Sendero Paseo de la Isla Trail around the small fjord of Lapataia Bay, abundant in geese, diving petrels, ducks and black-browed albatrosses. Senda Costera (the Coastal Path) is another hiking option that takes you through scenic views of the Beagle Channel, first discovered on an expedition that included the famous naturalist Charles Darwin. For more advanced hikers, the Cerro Guanaco Trail is the longest in the park and offers a challenging but rewarding path, ending on a panoramic view of the Beagle Channel and Darwin Mountains.

THE END OF THE WORLD TRAIN – Standing as the world’s southernmost functioning railway line, the End of the World Train (El Tren del Fin del Mundo) is one of the most unique ways to journey through Tierra del Fuego’s natural beauty. It’s also one of the best ways to engage with Ushuaia’s history, as it is the former transport for inmates being taken to a remote island turned penal colony in the early 20th century. Transporting you through the Pico Valley, you’ll make stops along the way at Cascada de la Macarena station – where you learn about the indigenous Yámana people and see wondrous waterfalls – into mountains and subpolar forests. The train ride also runs through awe- inspiring sights like Puente Quemado (the Burned Bridge) and Laguna Negra (the Black Lagoon) near the peat bog.

PATAGONIA WILDLIFE  – From the Magellanic woodpeckers of the forests to the penguin colony of Martillo Island, Tierra del Fuego National Park offers nature lovers a delightful slice of Patagonia wildlife. The region is home to at least 50 bird species, including the austral parakeet and Andean condor. Eagles can sometimes be seen soaring over the Beagle Channel. Mammals such as the guanaco, red foxes, muskrat and even small South American camel have been seen wandering the landscapes of the park.

A view of Ushuaia, Argentina the Southern most tip of South America while on a South America cruise

Ushuaia, Argentina

Dramatic, fantastical, otherworldly—this is the end of the world, for real. Positioned at the southernmost tip of Argentina, this memorable port town is cradled between the pristine—and towering—Martial Mountains and accessed by the picturesque Beagle Channel (which was named for Darwin’s famed vessel). Ushuaia is the capital of the Tierra del Fuego region, which is best described as a spectacular collection of superlative natural wonders. It’s a veritable kaleidoscope of glittering glaciers, snowcapped mountains, dense forests, sparkling lakes and windswept plains spread across an archipelago of rugged islands.

The town itself is a maze of streets lined with low-slung buildings that all seem to meet at its heart, the port. Founded in 1884, the far-flung spot welcomed missionaries, gold prospectors and naval officers before becoming known primarily as a penal colony. After its closure under the infamous Argentine leader Juan Perón, the large jail was reconfigured to house one of the city’s most popular museums. Other current in-town attractions include a maritime museum and a museum dedicated to the region’s natural history, as well as restaurants preparing the marquee offering—local king crab.

Insider’s Guide to Ushuaia, Argentina

By Kieran Meeke

Last updated: March 9th, 2023

Waterfront of Ushuaia Argentina

  • Find a Cruise

The city of Ushuaia is at the tip of South America on the south coast of Isla Grande, the largest island of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago in Patagonia.

Isla Grande, half of which belongs to Chile, is separated from the rest of the continent by the Strait of Magellan. Ushuaia’s isolation is reinforced by the barriers of the Andes inland, and the ocean stretching to Antarctica.

All that isolation, however, is part of the appeal. Surrounded by raw nature, whipped by winds from the South Pole, you can feel the fragility, and wonder of life in a place that will stay always in your memory.

Why Visit Ushuaia, Argentina

Colorful waterfront of Ushuaia Harbor

Ushuaia Harbor

The natural wonders of Patagonia , and its wildlife, are the key attractions for any visitor to Ushuaia.

This city of 150,000 people stands facing Antarctica, an outlook that shapes its weather, and its climate. While firmly Argentine, it has its own character molded by that geography, and that weather.

Modern but historic, remote but connected, this is a place that is fascinating in its contrasts, general quirkiness, and natural grandeur. Everyone comes with preconceptions that do little to match the reality, and appeal, of the world’s most southerly city.

History & Culture

Waterfront of Ushuaia Argentina

The name of Ushuaia—meaning “deep bay”—comes from the indigenous people who lived here for thousands of years before the Europeans first arrived. The “bay” is a sheltered spot on the Beagle Channel, the waterway that runs to the south of Tierra del Fuego.

A group of British missionaries founded a settlement on the natural harbor here in 1869. That then came under Argentine control when the nearby border with Chile was agreed in 1881.

Most of the aboriginal people had disappeared by the early 1900s, the victims of disease or genocide. This remote location also lent itself to the site of a prison, which held hardened criminals and political prisoners.

The prison closed in 1947 but by then, its inmates had cleared the forest to build a town, and laid a railway line. Sheep farming, timber, and a small offshore oil field, not to mention tourism, are the foundations of the city’s wealth.

There is also a small electronics industry, helping give Ushuaia the highest average salaries in Argentina. Of course, living costs are also high because so much has to be imported, but in compensation it has very low tax rates, including duty-free shopping.

Wildlife & Nature

Beautiful landscape of Tierra del Fuego National Park

Tierra del Fuego National Park

The untamed nature within easy reach of Ushuaia is its major attraction, home to Patagonian wildlife from condors and oystercatchers to animals such as foxes, guanaco, rabbits, and beavers.

One star attraction is the always-entertaining penguins , who arrive in October and stay until late March—happily coinciding with the summer tourism season. The Tierra del Fuego National Park, and cruises on the Beagle Channel are places to see them, many other birds, and other wildlife.

Magellanic penguins in Ushuaia

Magellanic penguins

Anywhere around Ushuaia, you are sure to see some unusual South American bird species . From the black-browed albatross, through the Magellanic penguin, to the flightless steamer duck, you’ll hopefully spot many that are new to you.

Andean condor spotted in Ushuaia

Andean condor

The Tierra del Fuego National Park is one of the best birding routes. It combines forest, and views of the Beagle Channel, offering the chance to see a wide range of species. The park alone has some 90 species of birds, including the Andean condor.

Tips for Visiting Ushuaia

View of Ushuaia from the water

The weather in Ushuaia may not be as severe as you’d expect from its extreme southerly setting. But you do need to be prepared for drizzle or rain at any time, so bring a rain jacket (and pants) with you. With 17 hours of daylight in summer, it’s also wise to pack sunscreen.

US dollars are widely accepted, but a notable expiation is national parks, where entry fees have to be paid in Argentine pesos, and credit cards are not accepted. Spanish is the language of Argentina, but English is widely spoken in tourism outlets.

As a duty-free city, Ushuaia has become a paradise for shoppers, particularly those from other parts of Argentina . There is even a new shopping mall near the main shopping street of Av. San Martín.

If you’re in the market for crafts, head for Paseo de Artesanos near the port. Local artisans here offer silverware, ceramics, carvings, leatherwork, and other goods to remind you of your visit.

Things To Do & Attractions in Ushuaia

Be awed by tierra del fuego national park.

Stunning view of Tierra del Fuego National Park

One of the best national parks in the world , Tierra del Fuego National Park features ocean, forest, and mountain, a combination of unique scenery and pure air. Far from the rest of Argentina, it is a place to feel close to nature, and to wildlife.

You can walk forest trails, listening to the call of birds, or along the coast of the Beagle channel, watching for whales or dolphins. Trek to a South American waterfall or glacier, or study the native forests of lenga beech and cooihue.

Ride the End of the World Train

Red train with landscape view of Ushuaia

End of the World Train

This five-mile railway was built in 1910 by convict labor, and used to bring timber and stone to Ushuaia for construction. Restored in 1994, it’s now a scenic, year-round way into the Tierra del Fuego National Park.

Steam locomotives (or sometimes diesel) pull the cars, while a multi-language commentary highlights points of interest. These include the Pipo River, La Macarena waterfall, and Burnt Bridge viewpoint.

Cruise the Beagle Channel

Majestic landscape from the Beagle Channel

Beagle Channel

The best way to explore the Beagle Channel is on one of the catamaran cruises which regularly leave the port. The channel connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, but cruises stick to the much calmer waters within closer reach of the shore.

Sea lions along the Beagle Channel

Sights include the Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse, and some of the countless islands. Most host colonies of penguins, cormorants, seals or sea lions, so any cruise is also a wildlife experience.

You might also see an albatross, and minke whales or dolphins are also common. The scenic beauty of the glaciers, and snow-capped mountains, all reflected in the calm waters, is also spectacular.

Sail Past the Eclaireurs Lighthouse

Landscape view of Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse

Eclaireurs Lighthouse

One of the best lighthouses in the world , this is a prominent landmark five nautical miles east of Ushuaia on the Beagle Channel. Reachable only on boat tours, it protects the approaches to the city’s harbor.

Eclaireurs means “Explorers” and comes from the islands on which it stands, named by a French expedition in 1883. A classic red and white striped tower, it’s often mistakenly called the “Lighthouse of the End of the World”.

The confusion comes from a Jules Verne novel with that title published in 1905, 15 years before Les Eclaireurs was built. His inspiration was the San Juan de Salvamento lighthouse on Isla de Los Estados, now rebuilt in the Maritime Museum of Ushuaia.

Visit the World Prison Museum

View inside the World Prison Museum

World Prison Museum

This former prison is now a complex with several museums onsite. These include the Maritime Museum, Antarctic Museum, and Museum of Marine Art, as well as the Prison Museum itself.

Quite how grim the prison must have been from 1902 to 1947 can be seen from the vivid tableaux of a prisoner in his cell, the historic photos and other exhibits. Just walking its corridors, peering into cells, evokes its deliberately oppressive atmosphere.

Old train outside the Maritime Museum

Maritime Museum

The city’s relationship to the sea is explored in the Maritime Museum, and the Museum of Marine Art. A highlight is the collection of ship models, including many old sailing vessels, and even the wrecked St. Christopher.

The Antarctic Museum explores the lives of famous explorers such as Amundsen, Scott, and Shackleton. Again, its detailed ship models are a highlight of its fascinating collection.

Contemplate the Malvinas Memorial

View of Malvinas Memorial

Malvinas Memorial

Ushuaia played a key role in the 1982 conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Malvinas/Falkland Islands. This memorial was built by local people to mark the death of 649 young men far from home.

Its central features are an eternal flame and a bronze slab with a cut-out of the Malvinas. Through the opening, you can see the ocean, and feel its winds in a haunting, evocative tribute to the dead.

Photograph the St. Christopher Tugboat

Iconic St. Christopher Tugboat in Ushuaia Argentina

St. Christopher Tugboat

This wooden tugboat is a prominent landmark, lit up at night, on the Ushuaia harbor front. It was beached here in 1957 after its owner went bankrupt.

Originally built in Camden, Maine, it served as HMS Justice in the British Royal Navy during World War II. Post-war, after a year in US Navy colors, it was sold to an Argentine businessman.

The tug was brought to Ushuaia in 1953 to help salvage the “SS Monte Cervantes”, a small ocean liner that had hit an uncharted rock in 1930. The salvage operation was ultimately unsuccessful, and the “St. Christopher” ended its own days where you see it now.

Join a 4×4 Adventure

Gloomy landscape of Carbajal Valley

Carbajal Valley

With the vast spaces of Tierra del Fuego to explore and the rough conditions of its raw nature, a 4×4 is a great way to see more. Take a tour with an experienced company to the lovely Carbajal Valley in the Fuegian Andes to see some of its forests and other wonders.

Carved by an ancient glacier, the valley’s floor is covered by colorful peat moss. Lakes Fagnano and Escondido are scenic gems, where barbecue lunch is a popular stop.

Deep blue water of Escondido Lake

Escondido Lake

Escondido Lake, wrapped by the Patagonian forest and the Andes mountains is a great spot for fishing.

It’s reached through the Garibaldi Pass, about an hour north of Ushuaia. Fished by semi-rigid boats, with fly or spinners, brown and rainbow trout are the key catch-and-release species.

Both experienced anglers and complete beginners are welcome to try their skills. Fishing guides will also arrange a lunch of local produce.

Explore the End of the World Museum

Not to be confused with the museum at the former Ushuaia Prison, this downtown museum is set in a historic house. It does have a section devoted to the stories of some former prisoners, however.

Just as interesting are the stories it tells of other former Ushuaia inhabitants, from the native Yagán people, to shipwrecked sailors, and explorers. Other rooms are devoted to the natural history of Tierra del Fuego, including a collection of 180 bird species.

Food & Drink

Plate of meaty Patagonian lamb

Patagonian lamb

Argentina food, and wines, probably need no introduction. To the joys of a good steak, and a fine Malbec, Ushuaia adds Patagonian lamb, and fresh local spider crab.

Popular restaurants for seafood include El Viejo Marino, and Tía Elvira, both near the port. Further out is Kalma Resto, a fine dining experience well worth the small extra distance.

For lamb, Bodegón Fueguino is an atmospheric destination. Go off the beaten path to Dieguito, packed with locals, for its empanadas and other comfort foods.

The Mercado del Jardín is a good one-stop place to find a number of eateries offering everything from pizzas to sushi to eat at communal tables. It’s also interesting for its local producers selling their food, and drink, as well as having a bookshop and interesting souvenirs.

Hot chocolate is the perfect drink for the Ushuaia climate. Ask for a “Submarino” in any café, and you’ll be served hot milk with a bar of chocolate to stir into it.

Plate of alfajores

Visit Laguna Negra on Av. San Martin for some of the best chocolate in town. You can drink it, eat it as cakes or alfajores, or bring some home as a present.

The city has a very busy, and surprisingly varied, restaurant scene. Join a number of culinary tours to learn more with a local guide.

Best Time to Visit Ushuaia

Waterfront of Ushuaia

In winter (June through October), you can ski near Ushuaia, but that is scant compensation for the short days and cold weather. Summer (December through March) is the best time to visit, with long hours of daylight, and average temperatures of 50ºF.

However, it’s not unknown to see flurries of snow even in summer. The only thing predictable about the weather in Ushuaia is that it isn’t.

One thing you can depend on is the wind as a constant from October to April. That can bring a chill to summer days, but short-sleeve days are still common.

On visiting Ushuaia, you’ll be met with staggering sea, mountain, and forest views at just about every turn. It truly is one of the world’s most unique cities.

In addition to being a strategic explorer’s hub, Ushuaia is peppered with colorful buildings made from all shapes, sizes, and materials. These house plenty of things to see, do, eat, and drink.

Here is our guide on everything you need to know about exploring the port city of Ushuaia.

Top landmarks and sights in Ushuaia

Tierra del Fuego National Park

Tierra del Fuego National Park is located on the Argentine part of the Tierra del Fuego island, roughly a 20-minute drive from Ushuaia itself. Offering ample opportunities for cyclists, canoeists, day cruisers, hikers, anglers, divers, and birdwatchers, this national park is famed for its diverse and scenic landscape.

Monumento Antiguos Pobladores

A tribute to the pioneer settlers of Ushuaia, this white stone monument has been carefully crafted detailing a different scene at each angle. Providing history about the province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica, and the South Atlantic islands, Monumento Antiguos Pobladores is a beautiful statue that should not be missed.

The End of the World sign

Although it is small in size, the End of the World sign is one of the biggest and most popular attractions in Ushuaia. Located near the cruise terminal downtown, this sign acknowledges your presence at the ‘End of the World’ and makes for the perfect photographic memento of your trip.

Plaza Malvinas

A monument that serves as a reminder of the Falkland Islands War of 1982, the Plaza Malvinas is a unique statue detailing a 3D metal map of where the war took place. On the black marble wall, a list of the names of the Argentinian people who lost their lives during the conflict are displayed.

Things to do in Ushuaia

Museo Maritimo y del Presidio de Ushuaia

This 19th century prison building houses an impressive collection of maritime, Antarctic, and marine collections, as well as artefacts from the jail itself. With displays and exhibitions that date back to the first inhabitants, the Museo Maritimo y del Presidio de Ushuaia describes the history of the region. This building is among one of the most notable in Ushuaia.

Southern Fuegian Railway

The Southern Fuegian Railway, or The Train to the End of the World, is a steam railway that was originally built to transport resources to the prison of Ushuaia. Traveling through Ushuaia’s scenic landscape, this railway adventure takes you on a journey through history.

Antigua Casa Beban

One of the original homes in Ushuaia, Antigua Casa Beban has long served as a community center. Built between 1911 and 1913, in the 1980s the Beban family donated the house to the city. Today, the house is a cultural center for locals and visitors alike and houses art galleries for viewing.

Eating and drinking in Ushuaia

Traditional and local dishes in Ushuaia are influenced by locally sourced ingredients. Notable dishes include king crab, cod, mussels, and lamb from steppe farms.

King crab is served in a variety of ways in Ushuaia, and paired with various seasonings and ingredient combinations. Some outstanding crab dishes created in this fishing city include ravioli stuffed with spider crab and whole crab entrees.

Beyond the food, the drink specialities from Ushuaia are also impressive. Mate is Argentina’s national drink and is consumed as part of the Yerba Mate ritual. It is made by crushing leaves and twigs from the yerba mate plant into hot water. It can be consumed with or without milk and sugar.

The 5-day Patagonian Explorer cruise aboard the 210-guest Stella Australis or Ventus Australis sister ships begins in Ushuaia, Argentina, and ends in Punta Arenas, Chile. Behold some of the planet’s most remote landscapes and incredible wildlife and discover the pristine beauty of Patagonia. Highlights of this Patagonia cruise include the huge and rarely visited Cóndor Glacier in Agostini Sound and Cape Horn, the “End of the Earth” and a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

The Stella Australis and Ventus Australis cruise Patagonia, bringing you luxury and comfort only surpassed by their activities. Visit fabled spots like Cape Horn and Wulaia Bay before cruising down the Beagle Channel. Continue through the maze of islands and glaciers, including Pia Glacier, Porter Glacier, Agostini Sound, Águila Glacier and Cóndor Glacier before entering the legendary Strait of Magellan. Search for condors and other wildlife by Zodiac, hike through Magellanic forest to glacial waterfalls and panoramic views of bays, and walk to a lighthouse on stunning Magdalena Island and its immense penguin colony before disembarking in Punta Arenas.

The Australis sister ships are the only small expedition vessels in the world to visit the Cóndor Glacier regularly. This spectacular but remote glacier at the southernmost tip of South America is guarded by and takes its name from the world’s largest flying bird, the Andean condor, which can weigh up to 33 pounds and have a wingspan of over 10 feet.

The 5-day Patagonian Explorer cruise can be combined with the 5-day Fjords of Tierra del Fuego cruise to create a round-trip, 9-day/8-night itinerary.

Read on for details about this trip, or learn more about AdventureSmith’s Patagonia cruises and Patagonia trips .

Patagonian Explorer - Ushuaia to Punta Arenas Itinerary

The 5-day Patagonian Explorer – Ushuaia to Punta Arenas cruise operates from Ushuaia, Argentina to Punta Arenas, Chile, moving south to Cape Horn and then north past glaciers and the Strait of Magellan.

Route map of Patagonian Explorer Ushuaia to Punta Arenas 5-day small ship Patagonia cruise, operating from Ushuaia, Argentina to Punta Arenas, Chile with visits to Cape Horn & Wulaia Bay, Pia Glacier & Porter Glacier, Agostini Sound, Águila Glacier, Cóndor Glacier & Magdalena Island.

Check in at 409 San Martín Ave. in downtown Ushuaia, Argentina, between 10:00am and 5:00pm on the day of departure. Board the ship at 6:00pm. After a welcoming toast and introduction of captain and crew, the ship departs for one of the most remote corners of planet Earth. During the night, traverse the Beagle Channel and cross from Argentina into Chilean territorial waters. The lights of Ushuaia disappear as the ship turns into the narrow Murray Channel between Navarino and Hoste islands.

Stella Australis, Ventus Australis

By early morning, cross Nassau Bay and enter the remote archipelago that comprises Cape Horn National Park. Weather and sea conditions permitting, venture ashore on the windswept island that harbors legendary Cape Horn (Cabo de Hornos). Discovered in 1616 by a Dutch maritime expedition and named after the town of Hoorn in West Friesland, Cape Horn is a sheer 1,394-foot high rocky promontory overlooking the turbulent waters of the Drake Passage. For many years it was the only navigation route between the Pacific and Atlantic and was often referred to as the “End of the Earth.” The park was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2005. The Chilean navy maintains a permanent lighthouse on the island, staffed by a lightkeeper and his family, as well as the tiny Stella Maris Chapel and modern Cape Horn Monument.

Sail back across Nassau Bay and anchor at fabled Wulaia Bay, one of the few places in the archipelago where the human history is just as compelling as the natural environment. Originally the site of one of the region’s largest Yámana aboriginal settlements, the bay was described by Charles Darwin and sketched by Captain FitzRoy in the 1830s during their voyages on HMS Beagle . This area is renowned for its mesmerizing beauty and dramatic geography. After a visit to the Australis-sponsored museum in the old radio station, which is especially strong on the Yámana people and European missionaries in the area, choose between three hiking options of increasing degrees of difficulty and ascend the heavily wooded mountain behind the bay. On all hiking options, stroll through an enchanted Magellanic forest of lengas, coigües, canelos and ferns to reach panoramic viewpoints overlooking the bay. Before leaving Wulaia Bay, drop something into the wooden mail barrel inside the museum–letters or postcards meant to be hand delivered by future travelers–an ancient mariner tradition.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

In the morning, navigate the northwest arm of the Beagle Channel to enter and disembark in Pia Fjord. Take a short hike to a lookout from where you can see Pia Glacier extending from the top of the mountain range all the way down to the sea.

In the afternoon, aboard Zodiac boats, sail between high rocky walls to reach Porter Glacier. Stop to observe its colors, listen to its sounds and if you are lucky, even witness some calving. Stay here for a moment to discuss this incredible ice mass and take some photographs before returning on board.

Early in the morning, sail through the Cockburn Channel and enter Agostini Sound, where it is possible to see the glaciers that descend from the middle of the Darwin Mountain Range, some of which reach the water. Disembark for an easy walk around a lagoon, which was formed by the melting of the Águila Glacier. Reach a spot right in front of that glacier with stunning views. In the afternoon, approach the Condor Glacier via Zodiac and hope to see some of the abundant Andean Condors in the area.

After an overnight cruise back into the Strait of Magellan, anchor off Magdalena Island, which lies about halfway between Tierra del Fuego and the Chilean mainland. Crowned by a distinctive lighthouse, the island used to be an essential source of supplies for navigators and explorers and is inhabited by an immense colony of Magellanic penguins. At the break of dawn, weather permitting, go ashore and hike a path that leads through thousands of penguins to a small museum lodged inside the vintage 1902 lighthouse. Many other bird species are also found on the island. In September and April — when the penguins dwell elsewhere — this excursion is replaced by a ride aboard Zodiacs to Marta Island to observe South American sea lions. After a short sail south along the strait, disembarkation at Punta Arenas is scheduled for around 11:30am.

Hear It from Travelers Who Have Explored with Us

Ship and staff were great. Everyone very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. All were top notch. Great knowledge, friendly and extremely helpful.

This trip was INCREDIBLE. We are a retired, yet active couple and we are always looking for trips that are adventurous and truly unique. Patagonia was on our bucket list and Adventuresmith made it happen.

Ship and staff were great. Everyone very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.

Accommodations Review

Nice clean cabin. Comfy bed. Other facilities in tip top shape.

Meals Review

Mostly good, some very good. They did a good job feeding 190 people, but some dishes were not the best. Would have been nice to have more fresh veggies. Also, breakfast was the same (runny scrambled eggs) every day. Some more variety, like hard boiled eggs or omelettes would have been nice. Service was terrific.

Crew & Guides Review

All were top notch. Great knowledge, friendly and extremely helpful. We can mention those we met: Juanita, Chris, Monica, and expedition leader Mauricio. All were great.

Traveler Advice

Be prepared for all kinds of weather and sea conditions.

This trip was INCREDIBLE. We are a retired, yet active couple and are always looking for trips that are adventurous and truly unique. Patagonia was on our bucket list and Adventuresmith made it happen.

The Venus Australis is a smaller cruise ship (which is a big advantage in my opinion) and was still very comfortable and modern.

The food and cooking emphasized local ingredients and flavors. I found the guanaco to be very tasty and unique.

Itinerary Review

Visiting Buenos Aires and Santiago was a very enjoyable way to start and end this adventure. Both cities were lively, steeped in history, and a great way to experience the Spanish culture. Sailing the Straits of Magellan, navigating the Beagle Channel, and getting up close to glaciers and penguins via zodiac boats was unique and thrilling. Terra del Fuego is just enchanting and truly one of the great wonders of the world. Torres del Paine is a geological wonder with its mountains, valleys, wildlife, and glaciers.

Fellow Passengers Review

We were able to make fast friends with several of the couples on the trip and will make every effort to stay in contact with them. The ability to interact and become friends with people from different cultures and countries is always a highlight of these trips

Both the Ventas Australis and the Explora Lodge had wonderful trip leaders and guides.  Sergio and Guy, both Explora Lodge guides, were just so knowledgeable and passionate.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Great communication, tips, and advice were very much appreciated. Thanks for giving us a wonderful vacation and trip of a lifetime.

Be prepared to have fun. I recommend the use of trekking poles on hikes which are readily available.

The options are nearly limitless in this Fin del Mundo gastronomic paradise. Melt-in-your-mouth Argentine beef, meats cooked "parilla" style surrounding a stone fire pit or the region's king or spider crabs prepared simply or with an exotic flair can all be found in this little city. If a large meal is too much, there are also several coffee houses and bakery/cafes along the main street (San Martin) through the city. This is a great place to splurge: The most elaborate lunch will cost less than $20 per person, maybe $25 with an excellent bottle of Argentine or Chilean wine.

Kaupe:  This family-run Alpine-like restaurant is located high above the city with sweeping views over the channel (and your ship). The Vivian family serves steak and seafood prepared with French flair and Argentine passion. (Calle Pte Gral J a Roca 470; +54-2901-42-2704; open daily 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.).

Moustacchio : Walk past the windows of this charming restaurant with its meats grilling over the open stone fire, and you'll want to go in to dine on typical Argentine parrilla: plates filled with portions of any of the meats you choose. (Avenida San Martin 298; +54-2901-42-3308; Open daily for lunch and dinner.

La Casa de los Mariscos: If it's king crab or indeed any other local crustacean you are after, then you've come to the right place. You can't miss this aptly named, bright red restaurant, which serves an excellent selection of local seafood at reasonable (for Ushuaia) prices. (Avenida San Martin 232; +54-2901-42-1928):

Tante Sara Bakery Cafe and Bar:  Stop in for a cup of coffee and try one of the cafe's signature Torte Fueguina, a gooey, chocolate-y concoction made with ingredients from this region. You can buy one packaged to take home, too. (Avenida San Martin 701; +54-2901-42-4579; open daily, 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.)

Ovejitas de la Patagonia: This charming tea house/cafe/chocolatier is a perfect spot to pause for a drink and pick up some reasonably priced handmade local chocolates. (Avenida San Martin 87; +54-2901-42-2824)

Museo Maritimo y Presidio : A highlight in terms of must-see sights in the town, entrance to the town's former prison does not come cheap but it's worth it as the Maritime Museum is a one-stop shop for the history of the area -- from the pre-history of the original inhabitants the Yamana, via the discovery of the area by the white man, missionary settlements, countless shipwrecks, Antarctica, building of the original penal colony and the Falklands War, right up to the present day.

Not only does the prison museum allow you to see the actual cells of the prisoners who were housed here through 1947, a couple of them have been left intact with the last of the miscreants' belongings still visible. There is also an art gallery and a gift shop. (Yaganes, Ushuaia; +54-2901-43-6321; open daily, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. January and February, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., March to December)

Tierra del Fuego National Park : Straddling the border between Chile and Argentina and lying just 10 miles west of the city, this is one of the largest natural preserves and maintained national parks in the world, with 150,000 acres of lush natural beauty to explore. It is a wonderful example of eco-cooperation between nations. Glaciers, pristine lakes, incredible views, streams, rivers and mountains can be found here, within two hours of Ushuaia itself. Ships offer the park within their excursions, highlights of which include: Lake Roca and vista point looking into the Beagle Channel and Lapataia Bay; or you can hire a taxi in town for the journey, if you want to do it on your own.

Martillo Island Penguin Rookery : If your journey isn't one that includes the penguin rookery at Punta Tombo, this is your best chance to see the marvelous Magellanic penguins up close and personal. And, rather than driving over dusty and bumpy roads for a couple of hours, this trip includes sailing on small vessels or catamarans through Lapataia Bay, past Sea Wolves Island, Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse and Archipelago, Bird Island and several other Beagle Channel landmarks. Most ships offer it as a shore excursion, or you can purchase the trip from the tourist kiosks at the end of the dock.

Ski Lift to Glacier Martial : A $5 cab ride from the center takes you to the chairlift beside the Cumbres del Martial Hotel, which operates year-round. Here, you can enjoy extraordinary views over Ushuaia and the Beagle Channel and the rapidly receding Glacier Martial while dining on king crab or Argentine beef at the hotel.

Catwalk over Bahia Encerrada : This small body of water -- located at the end of Maipu to the left of the dock as you exit -- freezes in winter and becomes the city's ice skating rink; in summer, you can cross it via the catwalk (at the Nautical Club) to get to the peninsula on the other side, enabling fabulous views of the city.

Sailing Beagle Channel: Ushuaia is the place for visiting the legendary Beagle Channel, a breathtaking stretch of water capped with mountains at the south end and the gentle beaches of Ushuaia along the north coast. Named after Robert FitzRoy's ship, which came here in the 1830s carrying a young botanist named Charles Darwin, the channel today is a prime wildlife spotting area, with sea lions, dolphins, occasional whales and a wealth of birdlife. Boat trips leave from kiosks all along the Muelle.

Visiting Antarctica : Ushuaia is the nearest port to Antarctica (though still 1,000 km away), and with a bit of forward planning it's quite possible to add a trip to the White Continent. You can do it a couple of ways: operators offer "flightseeing" trips in which you'll fly there and back without landing; or you can make the two-day crossing across the infamous Drake Passage. For more details, visit the information center Oficina Antarctica next to the tourist office in the port. Cruise operators that regularly visit Antarctica from Ushuaia include Quark Expeditions and National Geographic Expeditions. (Oficina Antarctica, Maipu 510; +54-2901-43-0015; typically open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

Tierra Mayor Trekking : Take a tour through the Tierra Mayor Valley Natural Reserve and trek along mountain paths to The Five Cascades, waterfalls tumbling from the Alvear Mountains. Dress warmly, as it gets cold during this hike, but it also gives you an opportunity to experience the beauty and natural wonders of the region.

Train Ride at the End of the World : Take this replica of a steam-driven "prison train" through Tierra del Fuego National Park and experience what the prisoners felt when they were transported to the region a hundred years ago. This tour also visits reconstructed camps of the original Tierra del Fuegans, the Yamanas and concludes with a motorcoach trip through scenic areas of the national park before returning to Ushuaia. (Ruta 3 Km. 3065, Ushuaia (CP: 9410); +54-2901-43-1600; May 1 to August 31 train leaves at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.; from September 1 to April 30 train leaves at 9:30 a.m., noon and 3 p.m.)

How to Choose the Best Antarctica Cruise & What You Can Expect

How to choose the best antarctica cruise & what you can expect.

There’s no way your imagination can prepare you for the magnificence of Antarctica. Vast, pristine, and empty, but irresistible. Antarctica is the 5th largest continent on earth and also the largest nature reserve on the planet. A place for scientific research, exploration, and, more recently, tourism. It’s a fragile ecosystem and one that needs to be further protected for the future of our planet. If you’re thinking of visiting the ice and snow covered continent of Antarctica let this be your ultimate guide helping you to choose the right company and providing you with all the information you need on what to expect, what to pack, and what to know before heading south to the land of icebergs and penguins.

I traveled to Antarctica with Viva Expeditions , a tour company specializing in the polar regions of the world. I set sail on an expedition-style ship called the Ocean Albatros with around 140 other passengers for 10 days and 9 nights. We departed from the southern town of Ushuaia in Argentina. Ushuaia is home to the Tierra Del Fuego National Park and is the main cruise terminal for almost all ships heading to Antarctica.

Important Note : If you’re planning to depart on a cruise ship out of Ushuaia, make sure to arrive at least one night before your scheduled departure time. Delays and flight cancellations are common, especially if and when the weather is bad.

Why Cruise to Antarctica

The main way tourists can visit Antarctica is on a cruise. While there are flights from Ushuaia to the Antarctic mainland, there is little to no infrastructure for tourists on the continent. That is unless you plan on joining an expedition to hike Mt. Vinson or wish to camp out at Union Glacier.

Given this, most travelers opt to visit Antarctica on expedition cruises, as they provide more options in terms of amenities and comfort. Although specific facilities and services can vary, cruises typically offer private and comfortable accommodations, fine-dining restaurants, full-service bars, on-board swimming pools, hot tubs, and a variety of entertainment.

In addition to this, many cruises provide the opportunity for passengers to explore Antarctica up close via sea and land excursions. And, of course, we can’t forget about the amazingly scenic views and vantage points that cruise ships provide from the open water.

What to Expect From an Antarctica Cruise

Here’s a more in-depth look at my experience aboard a cruise to Antarctica, and what you can expect from the moment you leave Ushuaia until your final days returning from the snow covered landscape.

What is the Ship Like when cruising to Antarctica

When heading to Antarctica there are alot of options for the size and style of the ship, ranging from intimate small ship cruises with less than 100 passengers to huge mega ships that won’t allow you to disembark on the continent itself. I was aboard the Ocean Albatros, an expedition style ship that at its max holds just under 200 passengers.

Small enough to never got lost, this ship has ample space for all the guests to spread out and relax. The ship featured a large lecture hall that was also used for all gatherings and games. Two lounges and bars on floor 5 and upstairs with views and access to the outer deck, one main dining area and two secondary restaurants that took reservations. There was also a sauna, small gym, two hot tubs and many outdoor areas to walk, look for whales be in the open air.

King Balcony Suite on the Ocean Albatros

I was staying in a king balcony suite on Deck 6 and I must say that the room was spacious and very well-appointed. Amenities included a mini fridge, television, desk for any work you might have, sofa, and a good-sized closet. Our balcony had two chairs and a table and was a place we spent a lot of time.

Leaving Ushuaia and Cruising Across the Drake Passage

At this point in my life, I’ve been on a lot of ships and inside a lot of ports. Ushuaia is certainly a beautiful place, enveloped by snow-covered mountains and long fjords that stretch out to the sea. Boarding the ship around 4 pm, this first evening was one of beauty and relaxation as we sailed slowly out of the Beagle Channel and towards the open ocean.

Watching the last sunset I would see over land for more than a week and standing on deck to take in the passing views of Chile and Argentina was a truly magical experience.

The Drake Passage

Late in the evening of our first day on the ship, we started our voyage through the Drake Passage. The Drake Passage is one of the roughest ocean channels in the world, where the Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern Oceans collide. This meeting point creates an upwelling of currents and can be prone to strong winds and unpredictable weather. Sea waves can range from a few feet to upwards of 30 feet on any given day. The good news is the captain of our ship was excellent and made sure to time our crossing and our speed to have the least amount of rocking. Most expedition ships are also built with stabilizers so the ship stays upright even in rough conditions. We encountered waves somewhere around 6 feet for around 36 hours. This was the toughest part of the trip for most, and many people stayed in their cabins riding out the rocking sea from bed, watching a movie, or listening to one of the many presentations that took place throughout the journey south.

It is advisable to wear a motion sickness patch or take some sort of Dramamine or motion sickness medication before the ship hits open water. I spent much of the second day splitting time between my room and outdoors on the upper decks looking for birds. Albatros were a common companion as we edged closer and closer to land.

The South Shetland Islands

After a full day and a half at sea, we finally closed in on land and heard the announcement that the South Shetland Islands would be coming into view within the next few minutes. The South Shetland Islands are a small chain of 11 islands located around 65 miles from the Antarctic Peninsula. This is a popular stop for almost all expedition cruises and our ship would be stopping at three of the various islands, Barrientos Island, Deception Island, and Elephant Point.

What Can You See in the South Shetland Islands?

There is plenty of wildlife to see in the South Shetland Islands. Teaming with wildlife like penguins, seals, and birds, this is one of the best places in summer to spot leopard, Weddell, and elephant seals, as well as several species of penguins too. Of the 17 penguin species in the world, 8 can be found between South America and Antarctica.

Gentoo Penguins on Barrientos Island

Barrientos Island

Barrientos Island in the South Shetlands is home to 2 penguin species and several large breeding colonies for both. The Gentoo penguin and the Chinstrap penguin. Gentoo penguins are the third largest penguin and the scarcest with just 300,000 breeding pairs in the region. These penguins make nests out of small volcanic rocks and mate for life. Chicks take 35 days to hatch and eventually grow to reach a height of 30 inches, weighing in at an average of 12 pounds.

Chinstrap penguins, which are the most abundant penguins in Antarctica, were also seen in great numbers. Easy to identify with the black strap that goes under their chins, these penguins were often seen sliding on their bellies on the snow instead of walking. Similar to Gentoo penguins, Chinstrap chicks take about 37 days to hatch. However, they are a bit smaller in size, growing to a height of 28 inches and weighing between 7 to 11 pounds.

Elephant Point

On Elephant Point, you can see the mighty elephant seal, named for the bulbous appendage male seals have on their heads. This island in particular is one they use yearly for breeding. On my visit, it was home to dozens of adolescent elephant seals, mothers with pups, and a few younger males. Male Antarctica elephant seals can reach upwards of 8000 pounds while females usually top out at 2000 or 3000 pounds. If you’ve never seen one of these massive seals then be prepared to fall in love with them. The pups are especially cute and will absolutely melt your heart.

Old vats used for storing whale fat and oil on Deception Island

Deception Island

Deception Island is another island in the South Shetlands that’s a common cruise stop. This island is entirely unique in that it is the volcanic caldera of a still active volcano. Shaped in a horseshoe, ships have one way they can enter and exit into the cone itself. A popular kayaking and walking destination, this island is also home to an old whaling station that was in operation in the early 1900s. Many remnants of old whaling buildings, vats, and ovens still remain on the land as well as a small cemetery. Because of the volcanic nature of this island, the water and the grounds here are much warmer than anywhere else in the South Shetlands. Steam and sulfur rise like smoke off the ground throughout the interior making for a landscape straight out of a Star Wars movie.

The Antarctic Peninsula

In addition to the South Shetlands, I would spend 3 full days exploring the Antarctic Peninsula. Because Antarctica is so far from South America, over 800 miles, reaching this continent takes up a large part of the journey. Most ships never reach the continent itself but merely visit the peninsula or the arm that reaches upwards towards South America. This region is home to the largest amount of wildlife and is incredibly diverse in landscape too. Here are some of the things you may see and experience while visiting the Antarctic peninsula.

icebergs in antarctica

Icebergs & Glaciers

My first thought, as I reached the landmass of ice and snow, icebergs all around, was “The snow is falling again and I am officially on the ice-covered mainland of Antarctica.”

We had sailed into an icy strait heading to make landfall on the continent itself. There were icebergs and huge chunks of floating ice cruising by us at every turn. Some were massive, spanning hundreds of feet long. Most had broken off from one of the many ice shelves or down-flowing glaciers.

These ice chunks, which get bluer with age, are known to float for years getting trapped in the currents that circumnavigate the continent. Here, they slowly melt, break apart, or get stuck in shallow water. It’s a truly magical sight to see and Antarctica is one of the best places to witness it all, as the continent houses approximately 90% of the world’s glacier ice.

In fact, Antarctica and its far-reaching ice, span more than 5.2 million acres, making it the fifth largest continent in the world. To put it in other words, Antarctica is 1.5 times bigger than the continental United States. Meaning there is so much of this icy environment to experience and explore!

Be sure to watch my video here , to check out this incredible landscape for yourself.

Zodiak Rides

Zodiak rides were some of my favorite activities as they took passengers close to the continent’s massive icebergs. We’d cruise by colonies of birds and right along the water’s surface to see penguins swimming quickly through the crystal clear and icy waters.

Speaking of penguins, you will see so many penguins. On Cuverville island, which lies just off the Antarctic Peninsula, one of the largest Gentoo penguin colonies on the planet covers the snow. Here, you can see them as they travel back and forth along their “penguin highways,” trails that zig-zag through the snow down to the water’s edge.

Research Stations

We had the opportunity to stop at several research stations. However, since COVID no one has been able to go inside any of the stations. Instead, we merely walked around the grounds, which was quite interesting.

We visited Brown Station, an Argentinian research station which is located in Paradise Bay. This bay is one of the most beautiful inlets I have ever seen, full of sparkling icebergs, and penguins swimming in the icy waters.

There are 70 research stations in the Antarctic Peninsula owned by different countries. Some are open year-round while others are only open in the summer.

  Stunning Landscapes

Most of all the spectacularness of the pristine landscapes will just blow your mind. The most pristine white snow blankets untouched mountains in all directions. On calm days, some of the bays we parked in were so still, flat, and glass-like it felt like you could step right off the boat and skate across the water. With almost 24 hours of summer light, the evenings brought strange and otherworldly colors to the sky. Sometimes inverted clouds would meet the sea, cutting out the light and creating a grayish-blue twilight that hung over the water like a layer of cool whip on a blueberry pie. Other nights when the sky was clear, the reflections from the sun would paint bright yellows and pinks across the sky.

What Activities Can You Do on an Antarctic Cruise?

It is important to note that not all ships going to Antarctica offer off-board activities. Our ship, however, was less than 200 passengers which allows for the most access to shore excursions and locations. Many of the activities also cost an additional fee depending on the ship. Here is a sampling of some activities that may be offered on a cruise expedition.

Important Note: Because the weather is unpredictable, activities can be canceled at any time due to weather conditions.

Snowshoeing: One of the best ways to explore Antarctica is on a guided snowshoe tour. Through this experience, you’ll be able to travel across the icy landscape, take in unforgettable views, and maybe even run into a penguin colony or two.

Kayaking: While kayaking in Antarctica, you’ll have the opportunity to get up close and personal with countless icebergs and floating sea ice. Glide among and around them, but also be sure to keep an eye out for wildlife. You may just happen upon a penguin or maybe even a whale if you’re lucky.

Camping: For those interested in sleeping on land, you may just have the opportunity to spend a night camped out on the ice. Depending upon the weather conditions, you can either sleep in a tent or wrapped up in a bivvy bag under the stars – either way, be sure to wear lots of warm clothes.

Polar Plunge: A truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, the polar plunge provides participants with the chance to jump into the icy cold waters of Antarctica. It only lasts a few seconds, but that’s really all you need to appreciate how truly cold this water really is!

Choosing the Right Ship to Cruise Antarctica

Lots of cruise companies are now offering itineraries to visit Antarctica. Choosing the right ship can make a big difference in your experience.

To begin with, not all ships are allowed to do shore landings. Only those with fewer than 500 passengers can offer land excursions. Furthermore, only 100 people are allowed on shore at any one given time. This means larger ships typically make fewer landings and passengers are allotted less time to explore. If you wish to spend more time on land, it’s in your best interest to choose a smaller ship, ideally one with 200 or fewer passengers.

In addition to this, most itineraries will only take you along the Antarctic Peninsula. This is a small arm of ice that extends north towards South America. Most animal life lives within this zone, in the South Shetland Islands and near and around the Peninsula. Popular stops around this area include Elephant Point, Deception Island, Barrientos Island, Paradise Bay, and Port Lockroy, among others.

If you wish to explore beyond the Peninsula, there are cruises that depart from New Zealand and travel to Ross Sea. That being said, these cruises are typically much longer, as the destination is quite far away, and they are much more expensive. Alternatively, some cruises travel deeper along the Antarctic Peninsula and end beyond the Antarctic Circle. Again, however, these cruises are typically longer and very weather-dependent.

Finally, it’s important to note that not all ships are created equal. There are a variety of different ships out there that offer different amenities, services, and excursions. From luxury cruises to mid-range cruises, standard expedition cruises, and fly-in cruises (where you skip the Drake Passage), there are lots of options to consider. Given this, it’s best to be mindful of your priorities and to choose accordingly, so you can be sure to select the best cruise to Antarctica.

As a side note, keep in mind that activities like kayaking, camping, and snowshoeing are not always included in the price of cruises and tend to be limited in number. They can also be canceled due to weather at any time.

What to Pack for Antarctica

Antarctica can have wild weather and huge swings in temperature, which means the best way to prepare is similar to how you would to hike a snow covered mountain . Having a good range of layers within your wardrobe is best, and outerlayer that is wind and waterproof. Ships will provide waterproof boots suitable for shore landings, but you will need waterproof pants, jacekt and hat, as well as some layers to go underneath. For midlayers a great option is either a smartwool long underwear or I also love the travel shirts in merino wool from Unbound Merino . The ozone layer in Antarctica is also quite thin, and the landscape can be very bright so a great pair of UV protective sunglasses or ski goggles is a must and some suncreen.

If you get cold easily I highly reccomend a pair of heated socks or a heated vest that uses a recheable battery to stay warm for several hours.  Ororo has a great selection of both heated socks and vests.

For more ideas on what to pack Viva Expedtions has a great downloadable packing guide for Antarctica, snag the packing guide right here.

I have also put together a gear locker with some of my favorite items for winter and cold weather.

Why Can’t You Go in Winter?

Summer is the only time ships are allowed to travel to Antarctica, because in winter the ocean around it freezes, making the land mass 100 times bigger. That packed ice can easily crush ships to pieces, making it a dangerous journey. On top of this, Antarctica experiences polar night during the winter months, which means a ship would have to cross in complete darkness for days on end. Which in turn, makes the Drake Passage that much more dangerous.

It’s not until October or November that the packed ice finally starts to break up. Around this time, cruise ships can resume their expeditions out to Antarctica, even though some sea ice still remains.
