Safari Pub & Grill

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

When in Tzaneen don’t miss this place. When we were there we visited place for the first time ever and ordered the highly recommended Spare ribs. Double portion for single portion price. Well the ribs were “splendid, phenomenal, awesome”. No reason to say so other... than that’s what they were. The service was brilliant as well. The Old Geysers reference is to the series of Old Geysers that have been converted to wood heaters creating a lovely atmosphere and keeping the area warm, with character as well. We can’t wait to return again to experience the hospitality of John and his team. More

Great atmosphere, wide variety of food on the menu, famous for their pizzas and ribs. The perfect place to watch the rugby, or meet friends.

Wow, I was really impressed with Safari. The food was absolutely fabulous. The atmosphere was so chilled and relaxed. The children have a play area, which is so considerate. I had the pork ribs, they simply fell off the bone. The springbok carpaccio was a... generous portion for a starter. And was accompanied by an interesting balsamic and onion mix. After participating in the local Tzaneen Parkrun which starts just outside this venue, my husband and I decided to try the Safari Pub & Grill for a post-parkrun coffee. Our doubts about whether a pub & grill was the best place for coffee were confirmed... when our orders of two cappuccinos arrived after a long wait. Said cappuccinos were instead Latte's- milk with a vague hint of coffee. When we asked our waiter about what we assumed was a mistaken order, he replied that this was how the pub & grill always made their coffees. The fact that they have various coffees on the menu and that the drinks set before us were not at all cappuccinos seemed to be besides the point. Safe to say we will not be returning here for our caffeine kicks and those looking to come here for a post-parkrun beverage should rather take a leaf out of the locals' books and order beers instead! Had a great time and peaceful stay. The weather was nice....

Magoesbaskloof is a stunning area to explore and visit!

Magoebaskoof and the water falls.

The environment and the green.

We spent most of our time in Magoebaskloof and Haenertsberg. What a beautiful part of the country!

Lots of restaurants and game drives.

The guest rooms are very clean and user friendly, and the view of the place is very attractive. I enjoyed my stay with my hubby. Thanks a lot for your hospitality

Everything. Game drive, pools and food in Tzaneen.

The view is absolute beauty.

More info about Tzaneen

Encircled by dense green forests and misty mountains, and a subtropical climate with plenty of sun, the town of Tzaneen in the Limpopo Province of South Africa is an enchanting paradise for adventure seekers and nature lovers.

Lush fruit plantations exist alongside forested areas with a backdrop of mountains, often shrouded in a silvery mist. Water is abundant in Tzaneen and the area is bursting with rivers, waterfalls and expansive dams.

The town is a mere 90-minute drive from the Kruger National Park on one of the most scenic roads in South Africa.

Tzaneen offers safari experiences, opportunities to interact with unique cultures, the chance to witness natural marvels and be touched by people that will forever remain emblazoned in the mind.

1. Tzaneen is a regular recipient of the cleanest town award. Take a walk through the shopping district and visit the gardens and the interesting museum. The town hosts regular events such as a rally, a country fair and festivals, expos and marathons through the year. The picturesque dam is located alongside the town.

2. Hike the Letaba Trail in the Hans Merensky Nature Reserve . Expect to see hippo and crocodile along the river banks. While at the reserve, bathe in the swimming pool, fed by a thermal spring that releases water at a piping hot 104° Celsius. The waters are said to relieve rheumatism.

3. Day visitors are welcome at the Baobab Tree Bar in Modjadjiskloof, a bar built inside the world’s largest living baobab tree. This ancient tree hollowed out naturally and the farm owners built a bar in the hollow, wide enough to comfortably seat 15 people. The record is 54 people, one would guess all highly intoxicated!

4. Experience 13 thrilling zipline slides over the spectacular Letaba River gorge, south of Tzaneen and offered by the Magoebaskloof Canopy Tour Company. The platforms overlook waterfalls, ancient cliffs, green thicket and a river far below.

5. Visit the Coach House Confectionary factory shop to stock up on the nougat, shortbread and brittle made from local produce and flavoured with macadamia nuts and almonds.

6. Competitive bass angling goes down at the Tzaneen Dam where landing of 6kg bass is not uncommon. Keep in mind that crocodiles and hippos inhabit the dam.

7. For a fun family outing, stop in at the Mangela Animal Touch Farm, Tea Garden & Curio Shop at the Tzaneen Country Lodge. Relax out in the open while the children get to interact with the animals. Try their tasty, homemade Mangela pancakes.

8. The Muti wa Vatsonga open air museum located in the Hans Merensky Nature Reserve gives visitors an insight into the local Tsonga culture. The museum is laid out in traditional village fashion and villagers showcase their ancient customs and dance and sing for audiences. Meals are offered in the village’s brightly painted huts.

International flights from major centres (Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg) arrive at Polokwane International Airport, 95km from Tzaneen. Tzaneen has its own airfield, 20km out of town and exclusively for chartered flights. Car rental agencies are located at the airports or in the town, otherwise order a vehicle online. Shuttle and tour companies operate between Tzaneen and Polokwane, however, it’s best to hire a vehicle.

Did you know?

The baobab tree is often referred to as the ‘upside down tree’ for its branches that resemble roots. The tree is an ecological microcosm, providing shelter, food and water to humans and animals. The fruit is edible and baboons savour the pods. The tree stores thousands of litres of water chewed by elephants during times of drought. Birds, mammals and reptiles make their home in the baobab.

In African folklore, the Modjadji Rain Queen holds rainmaking powers and is able to summon her ancestors, using a magical horn, to bring the rains. The last queen died over a decade ago and the region is soon to inaugurate its seventh queen who is only 10 years old.

We have never experienced so much care and attention. Heike knew our approximate travel plans and although we had checked out days before, she called to warn us about strikes. Thanks again. If it were possible, we would give you 10 stars! Sigrid Wierig
We were guests at Baluleni Safari Lodge from 29.01.-07.02.23. For us, after 4 days in Cape Town and our first time in South Africa, it was an intense and impressive time in Baluleni, which, back home, is still lingering. The lodge is run with great attention to detail. The grounds are very well maintained and clean (thanks to the people in charge Vasco and Jobert), the chalets overlooking the Olifantenriver (with air-conditioning and coffee machine and fridge) very tastefully furnished and conscientiously cleaned daily by Gertrud and Jane. From the chalet we could watch and listen to monkeys, waterbucks, many species of birds, bushbucks, squirrels, warthogs etc. The first few days we heard lions roaring very close several times a day and also hippos from time to time, which made us feel the closeness of the wilderness. Julia Gross
A quiet dream oasis that I can only recommend without reservation. The whole team prepares meals, the rooms and the lodge with great attention to detail, so that you feel well looked after. The game drives and a bush walk are very well organised by the guide, a lot is explained and rounded off with a snack. A week off from the hustle and bustle is also recommended. Sometimes animals can be observed directly at the lodge. We felt very comfortable and would like to come again. Thanks also to Andreas for answering our many questions. Best regards to the whole team! You are great! Ludwig Czibere
A wonderful place to get away from it all. The food and the team were wonderful. At the pool we were visited by an elephant and several giraffes that also walked through the lodge as everything is open and very animal-friendly. You can also do very nice things outside the lodge such as: Kruger National Park, the Hippo Jessica or go to an Animal Rescue Centre. We will definitely come again. Thank you for the great time with you. Best regards to the whole team Sabrina Heger
The lodge is beautifully situated in the middle of a nature reserve. As the lodge is not fenced in, we could observe the animals directly from our chalet. The chalet has a romantic African interior and is equipped with an indoor and outdoor shower. The cuisine was excellent. In the evenings, we ate with all the guests in the boma around an open fire. Anne-Marie

This African Safari Lodge Just Got a Luxe Makeover. Here’s a Look Inside.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

It can take a lifetime of travel to even begin to know the hugely diverse landscapes of Africa. But if you only have an American-sized vacation, there’s no need to chase charter flight after flight to camp after camp in country after country. Africa can be taken-in in miniature, provided you know where to go: for instance, the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal.    Here, a few hours north of Durban, near the border of the landlocked micro-nation of Eswatini, you’ll find the 30-year-old Phinda Private Game Reserve —115 square miles of protected land nicknamed the Seven Worlds of Wonder. It’s a cluster of seven distinct, ultra-rare dwarf ecosystems crammed together, including woodland, grassland, wetland, and forest (as well as an unusual sand forest), plus mountain ranges, rivers, marshes, and pans. It would take a grueling cross-continental, multi-national journey to tick even half of these boxes any other way.    Better still, rare landscapes make for even rarer animals. So while the Big Five are in abundance, so are shy red duikers, diminutive suni antelopes, Tonga red squirrels, and 436 bird species.   Within Phinda, there are six camps , each targeting a different habitat within the reserve, but aim your LandRover at its Forest Lodge (from $850 per night). Within the reserve’s four-square-mile sand forest, andBeyond Phinda Forest Lodge recently emerged from its first full makeover since opening in 1994.

The refurb—which cost an unspecified sum, spent by an unspecified ownership, according to the resorts rep—has ramped up the luxury of the lodge’s Zulu Zen style and added new facilities such as an infinity pool (complete with a poolside bar), a fitness room, and a spa. The panoramic forest views and grazing nyalas are still intact.

This African Safari Takes You on a Land Adventure and a River Cruise-Here's What It Was Like

There Are Only 1,000 Mountain Gorillas in the World. This New Rwanda Lodge Lets You See Them up Close.

The lodge’s Gallery, a tranquil library and lounge, is now decorated with a cabinet of curiosities and a series of prints depicting the life of Shaka Zulu , the former ruler of the Zulu Kingdom.

“The original catchphrase was ‘Zulu Zen,’ and we wanted to keep that,” says Kerri Smithers, general manager of Phinda Forest. “But we’ve also added an ‘Afro Japanese’ touch with the low seating and Japanese-inspired doors.”

However, the design is remains very much rooted in South Africa, assures Smithers.

“The woven papyrus mats on the ceiling look Japanese but are actually made by local women and are used on flooring and to take to the beach,” she says. “The lights are inspired by traditional Zulu brooms and have also been made by local women. And as Zulus use lots of clay, we’ve added these decorative clay pots, which traditionally are passed around to drink beer out of.”

Outside, the terrace can be used to host private dinners, while a few steps away, the birds-nest-inspired fire pit is the new hot spot for pre-dinner drinks, while recounting the day’s safari adventures.

The camp’s 16 lodges now include a new larger family-friendly suite. It’s made up of two interconnecting rooms that have been refigured to maximize the space, something that Smithers says was a key part of the refurbishment since it avoided a complete rebuild that would’ve disturbed the surrounding habitat. The bedroom’s clean lines nod to Japanese minimalism. The geometric headboard is made from the same papyrus mats as the Gallery’s ceiling, juxtaposed to broom lamps and decorative hanging beadwork. Chunky wood furnishings crafted from stained iroko and touches of forest green Astrus marble bring the outside in, but what really connects you with nature are the floor-to-ceiling windows that wrap around the lodge, including one next to the luxuriously deep tub. You can continue to spot grazing nyala and curious monkeys at all hours; the team even recommend sleeping with the curtains to really feel like you’re spending the night in the forest, at one with nature.

The lodge matters, but it’s ultimately designed to be left behind on daily game drives. And in unusual surroundings such as these, it’s only natural that the Phinda team specializes in organizing a more unique safari experience. For the first time, you can now e-biking through the sand forest. For the braver still, follow on a big game tracking walk to stalk rhinos, buffalo, and elephants. A final proof that this place is all about location, location, location: Phinda can even drive you to Sodwana Bay for a beach picnic. It’s one of the most scenic routes in Africa.   If you can handle both a late night and a bleary-eyed early morning, then for three months of the year—between November and January—you can head back to the bay after dark to watch two of the ocean’s largest turtles, the leatherback and loggerhead, emerge from the ocean to lay their eggs.   What andBeyond brings to this extraordinary place is the element of surprise. A wild goose (or rather tiger) chase might end at a candle lit bush tucker dinner. You may be surprised with a sleep out under the stars—with an armed ranger, of course. You may find that, unbeknownst to you, the staff have run a hot bath in your room and chilled a bottle of Champagne. Mocha-choca-rulas—the classic safari drink of caffeine, chocolate, and booze—are served in the morning, as are G&Ts at sundown.

Still, none of this comes easily. To operate any private reserve is a frustratingly Sisyphean task. The death of one beloved game animal leads to an over-population of another. Too many elephants can  destroy a forest; too few can leave it overgrown. But rather than toil in silence, andBeyond allows guests to become a part of their delicate conservation work.    In fact, many of the camp’s most exclusive adventures allow a limited number of guests the once-in-a-lifetime experience of getting hands on.   Help by notching the ears of rhino, or dehorning one to deter poachers. You can also assist in changing the collars on elephants or witness the release of animals, such as cheetahs and lions. If you’re more into pangolins then predators, then andBeyond will take you out to play hide-and-seek with the elusive animals, which have been successfully reintroduced to the region. And, oh what a region it is.

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is one of the world’s most spectacular destinations to see wildlife, both in the surrounding Serengeti National Park and on-property where elephants and buffalos come to drink at its active watering hole. The striking terrain and abundance of animal life will entice first-time safari goers and seasoned enthusiasts alike with thrilling game drives, educational walking safaris and outdoor bush dinners. Even if you’ve visited the lodge before,

2024 marks a new look for the property and with the opening Four Seasons Resort Zanzibar, allows for a quick beach trip before or after your safari adventure.

Hot Air Balloons, Game Drives and Bush TV

With its strategic location, Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is an excellent place to witness the annual Great Migration where millions of animals traverse the land. However, even if you can’t make it to Tanzania during that time, there’s always something interesting to experience there no matter what time of year. If you want to see the splendid Serengeti from above, book an early-morning hot air balloon adventure to enjoy the plains from the sky. Morning game drives also start early (though not before sunrise like the hot air balloon) or you could choose to sleep in to wake up to giraffes, zebras and elephants drinking water near your room in a marvelous natural spectacle. “ The pool provides an uninterrupted view across the watering hole with the savannah as its backdrop,” says Trevor Van De Ven, Senior Director of PR and Communications. “Elephants have an incredible memory and so they return frequently to the watering hole as they traverse the plains.” To ensure you don’t miss the moment, there’s a 24-hour livestream of the watering hole on your TV, jokingly referred to as “bush TV”.

Four Seasons Serengeti

The lodge which has been open since 2012 is getting a few design and sustainability updates this year; the main buffet dining area Kulas will reveal a new appearance, and there will be other soft finishings and touches found throughout the property. There will also be a new private dining option, the Vineyard, which will serve wine-paired five or seven-course dinners. To reduce its environmental footprint, the lodge will also be getting a solar farm as its primary source of power this year.

Much of the action at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti takes place during the day when it’s easy to spot wildlife, but the evening is also a magical time to be there. Dining at Boma, the African cuisine restaurant with an open-air firepit is a must both for its culinary delights and chance to immerse oneself in Maasai culture. Wear comfortable shoes because you may be asked to dance and jump with them; renowned for their sky-high jumps, you’ll want the right footwear to try and keep up.

Four Seasons Zanzibar Rendering

Safari and Sandy Beaches

Combining the wonders of the Serengeti with the beachside splendor of Zanzibar is a popular vacation itinerary, and next year this trip becomes even easier with the opening of Four Seasons Zanzibar. Zanzibar, an island with a complex history and wide range of activities from snorkeling to swimming with horses, is just a short one-hour flight away from Seronera Airstrip in the Central Serengeti. “From a guest point of view, it’s expected to offer the ideal combination of safari and island getaway while staying within the same country,” says Van De Ven. Four Seasons Zanzibar is expected to be completed in 2025 and the renderings show a sprawling beachside location and spacious pool overlooking the water.

Tanzania is renowned for its beautiful landscapes, captivating wildlife and stunning coastline. Booking a stay at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti and the upcoming Four Seasons Zanzibar allows guests to immerse themselves in a variety of adventures just an hour apart.
