Panama City Travel Guide

Last Updated: September 1, 2023

traffic and city skyline views in Panama City

Today, you can find divine food, plenty of shopping, and a vibrant nightlife scene in Panama’s capital. Casco Viejo, the oldest neighborhood of the city, is where you still find the early origins of the city when it served as an important trading hub between the New World and the Old World. Since the crumbling Spanish-colonial buildings of Casco Viejo were renovated in the 2000s, the area has evolved from a crime-ridden no-go neighborhood to Panama’s tourist hot spot.

Admittedly, Panama City doesn’t have a lot to offer in terms of landmarks and tourist sights, but it is a good place to spend a few days enjoying the amenities of a big city. It’s also a good base for visiting the Panama Canal, the rainforest, and nearby Taboga Island.

This guide to Panama City can help you plan your trip, save money, and make the most of your time in this massive capital city!

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Panama City

traffic and city skyline views in Panama City

1. Wander Casco Viejo

Casco Viejo, the original Spanish-colonial settlement built in 1671, is a must-do and also a great place to stay if you’d rather not stay in the bustling metropolis part of the city. Everything is walkable in this gorgeous neighborhood that is home to some of the trendiest bars, restaurants, and boutique hotels. Visit the Panama Canal Museum for a bit of history as well as the Museo de la Moda to learn about the unique, vibrant tapestries made by the Guna indigenous people. You can also wander the cobblestone streets and watch the sunset at one of the many rooftop bars. If you’re a coffee fanatic and want to indulge, head to Café Unido.

2. Hang out in Metropolitan Park

The Metropolitan Park is a 575-acre rainforest within the city limits. This beautiful nature sanctuary is home to 227 bird species, 45 mammals, 14 kinds of amphibians, 36 different kinds of snakes, and 284 types of trees. There are 8 kilometers (5 miles) of trails here to enjoy and you can hike up to the top of Cedar Hill for beautiful panoramic views of the city and the Panama Canal. Admission is $4 USD. You can also see 30 different species of butterflies housed on the butterfly farm for an additional $5 USD.

3. See the Panama Canal

One of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World, the Panama Canal is definitely worth checking out if you’re in Panama City. The Miraflores Locks are one of twelve locks along the Panama Canal and the closest to Panama City. The canal took 10 years and over 40,000 laborers to build (over 5,000 of whom died during construction). There is a visitor center with an observation deck and, every time a ship passes through the canal, you’ll hear a detailed explanation of what is happening. Also, Miraflores has an interesting IMAX documentary on the history of the Canal with Morgan Freeman narrating. Admission is $20 USD.

4. Explore Panama Viejo

Panama Viejo (Old Panama) is a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site and forms the original part of the city. It was founded in 1519 by Pedrarías Dávila and was the first Spanish settlement on the Pacific Coast of the Americas — and the first planned town in the Western Hemisphere. In 1691, the city was attacked and destroyed by pirate captain Sir Henry Morgan. Despite several attacks, a huge fire, and an earthquake, you can still see some of the ruins of many of the original buildings including the Old Panama Cathedral. The remaining ruins are spread out over 57 acres, including the original cathedral. Admission is $15 USD.

5. Bike along Amador Causeway

Amador Causeway is made up of rocks excavated for the construction of the Panama Canal and connects Panama City with three small islands: Naos, Perico, and Flamenco. The 6-kilometer (4-mile) ultra scenic, colorful boardwalk is popular with cyclists and filled with all kinds of restaurants where you can stop for fresh seafood and take in the views (especially at sunset). You can rent bikes for about $15 USD per day if you want to explore by bike.

Other Things to See and Do in Panama City

1. check out mi pueblito.

This open-air museum is designed to give visitors a glimpse of village life in Panama. You’ll find replicas of colonial and indigenous buildings here and on Fridays and Saturdays they have folklore dance performances. The village is divided into three parts: an indigenous village, a rural village, and an Afro-Antillean village, showing aspects of these three different population groups in Panama. Admission is $3 USD.

2. Admire some colonial art

The Museo de Arte Religioso Colonial in Casco Viejo houses colonial religious art that dates back to the 16th century. Some of the art and artifacts even made it through the attack and sacking of the city by Henry Morgan and his crew in 1671. One of the most interesting pieces is the Arco Chato, a long arch that stood unsupported for hundreds of years (the arch was used to prove that Panama was not earthquake-prone, making it an ideal place for the canal rather than Nicaragua). This is a small museum and admission is only $1 USD, so it’s worth a quick visit.

3. Take a ferry to Taboga Island

Taboga Island is a little island 19 kilometers (12 miles) off the Pacific coast of Panama City. It’s easy to do as a day tour, with return ferries costing $24 USD. The ferries leave from Amador Causeway and the ride takes about 30 minutes. Explore the island’s village, chat with the locals, go on a hike, or just chill on the sandy beach. The beach is not the nicest as the water tends to be polluted but the ocean views towards Panama City and the Panama Canal make up for that.

4. Hike Cerro Ancon

The highest hill in Panama City makes for a great hike. It’s a steep 30-minute incline, but you’ll be rewarded with fantastic views. There are two viewing platforms: one facing historic Casco Viejo, and one facing the newer skyline that’s lined with skyscrapers. Look out for wildlife along the way – you’re likely to see toucans, iguanas, and pacas. A cab ride to the trailhead, which is right by Mi Pueblito, takes about 10 minutes.

5. Marvel at contemporary art

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Panama City features various permanent and temporary exhibits from Panamanian and Latin American artists. With over 700 items in the collection, it offers a comprehensive introduction to Latin American contemporary art. There are often free exhibits that provide an opportunity to hang out with the city’s artsy crowd too. It’s the only contemporary art museum in the entire country. Admission is $5 USD.

6. Take a Spanish course

If you’ve got some time to spend in the city, consider taking a week-long Spanish course. There are a number of schools here that offer programs with one-on-one or small group classes for $230-$250 USD per week. Try the Spanish Panama Language School or Casco Antiguo Spanish School for in-depth lessons that can help you master the language.

7. Learn about Marine Life

Punta Culebra Nature Center is a science and nature center run by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute that focuses on marine life. There is also a short nature trail with three-toed sloths, iguanas, and frogs. Explanatory signs are in Spanish and English, making it an educational exhibition that’s interesting for grown-ups and kids alike. Admission is $8 USD.

8. Visit the Biomuseo

The Biodiversity Museum was designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry and it was his first design in Latin America (Gehryd designed the Dancing House in Prague, the AGO in Toronto, and the Disney Concert House in LA) . It’s worth seeing simply for the stunning design, though spending a couple of hours inside the museum is a great way to learn about Panama’s biodiversity. The museum also highlights the natural and cultural history of the country. The Biomuseo has eight galleries for its permanent exhibits, each one covering a different topic. Tickets are $18 USD.

9. Check out the seafood market

Panama’s lively Mercado de Mariscos, the seafood market, is located on the western end of the Cinta Costera, the coastal road that connects Casco Viejo with the newer part of town. The market is divided into two parts: one section is where fresh fish and seafood are sold, and the other section is where you’ll find dozens of no-frills seafood restaurants where you can try some of the fresh catch. Try the local specialty, ceviche, made from raw fish and lemon.

10. Stroll Avenida Central

Avenida Central is the pedestrian walkway where you can soak up the city’s vibe. It’s noisy and fun, with lots of street food vendors and performers, making for some excellent people-watching. Cinta Costera is the city’s waterfront park area where you can enjoy views of the ocean while grabbing an ice cream or some street food as you soak up the pace of the city.

Panama City Travel Costs

traffic and city skyline views in Panama City

Note: Panama uses both PAB and USD. There’s no real need to carry the local currency, the Panamanian Balboa, unless you’re paying for really small things on the street. For the most part, use USD (which has the same value as PAB).

Hostel prices – Hostels in Panama City are inexpensive, with a night in a hostel dorm costing between $12-30 USD per night for a 6-8-bed dorm. Private rooms start around $22 USD per night for a double room. All hostels offer free Wi-Fi and some offer free breakfast.

Budget hotel prices – For a three-star hotel, prices start at $50 USD per night and go up from there. International hotel chains range from $75-135 USD.

Airbnb is available in the city, with private rooms ranging from $40-60 USD per night and entire apartments starting around $75-100 USD. Bigger apartments accommodating four to six people start at $150 USD per night. Book early otherwise prices can double.

Food – Like its neighbors, Panamanian cuisine features rice, black beans, yuca (a starchy vegetable similar to the potato), plantains, beef, chicken, and seafood. Common dishes include empanadas, chicken and rice, fried fish, and ceviche (a raw fish dish with lemon).

Local food stalls meals will cost around $4-6 USD. For that price, you will get a plate of chicken, rice, and beans — a staple dish in Panama. Western food such as pizza or hamburgers costs around $10-15 USD.

Panama City has the best international food in all of Central America, so take advantage of that while you’re in town. Many of the trendiest restaurants can be found in the Casco Viejo neighborhood, such as the Dining Room, Tantalo (a superb rooftop restaurant and bar atop the Tantalo Hotel), Donde Jose (fine dining Panamanian cuisine) and Casa Casco, which has three great restaurants, a rooftop bar and a nightclub. You’ll also find a number of great restaurants along Amador Causeway.

For a nice meal with wine, expect to pay around $50 USD. There are a lot of stylish, more expensive restaurants in Casco Viejo if you’re looking for something more upscale.

Domestic beer at a bar is around $2.50 USD. Cocktails at one of the popular rooftop bars are around $8-9 USD. A latte/cappuccino costs around $3.50 USD while bottled water is $1 USD.

If you plan on cooking your own food, expect to pay about $35-45 USD per week for groceries like rice, beans, seasonal produce, and some meat or fish.

Backpacking Panama City Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking around Panama City, expect to spend about $45 USD per day. This includes staying in a hostel dorm, limiting your drinking, cooking your meals, using public transportation to get around, and doing mostly free and cheap activities like hiking and wandering the Old Town.

On a mid-range budget of around $150 USD per day, you can stay in a private Airbnb, enjoy a few drinks, eat out for a few meals, take the occasional taxi, and do some paid activities like visiting the canal.

On a “luxury” budget of $220 USD per day or more, you can stay in a hotel, eat out for all your meals, drink more, take more taxis, and do whatever tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in USD.

Panama City Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Panama City is a pretty affordable place to visit. Unless you are dining on the higher end of things or staying in a chain hotel, you’re hard pressed to spend a lot of money here. However, there are always extra ways to keep your costs down. Here are the best ways to save money in Panama City:

  • Stick to free activities – Most of Panama City’s sights can be visited for free: Casco Viejo, Amador Causeway, a stroll through the fish market and along Cinta Costera, the coastal road that offers stunning views of the bay and the freighters entering the Panama Canal.
  • Eat at local food stands – Meals at local food stalls cost less than $5 USD. You’ll get rice, chicken, beans, and maybe another side plus a drink. Don’t expect a super tasty meal, but it is enough to fill you up.
  • Avoid taxis – Buses are cheap and go everywhere in the city. Take the bus and save your money!
  • Bring a water bottle – The tap water here is generally safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle. LifeStraw is my go-to choice as it has a built-in filter to ensure your water is always clean and safe.
  • Stick to beer – Beer is cheaper than other kinds of alcohol so if you want to drink, stick to beer.
  • Save money on rideshares – Uber is cheaper than taxis and is the best way to get around if you don’t want to wait for a bus or pay for a taxi.
  • Carry small change – Most taxis and small shops won’t accept larger bills for small purchases so make sure you carry change.
  • Avoid hot water – Get rooms with cold-water showers. Hot water always costs a lot more. It’s so hot here anyway, you’ll hardly ever want hot water. Even I got used to cold-water showers, and usually, I get cranky without hot water!
  • Stay with a local – There are tons of Couchsurfing hosts (and lots of community events) here, making this a great city to Couchsurf in. Pick up some tips and save some money by staying with a local!

Where to Stay in Panama City

Panama City has plenty of fun, affordable hostels. Here are my favorite places to stay:

  • Hostel Mamallena
  • Magnolia Inn
  • Hostal Casa Areka

How to Get Around Panama City

traffic and city skyline views in Panama City

Public transportation – It is easy to travel by city bus between Amador Causeway and Casco Viejo – buses have their destination written on the front. The main bus terminal is inside the Albrook Shopping Mall. If you think you’ll be taking the bus a lot, pick up a metro card at Albrook Terminal. The metro card is $2 USD, and then you can add however much money you think you’ll need. Since a bus ride is only $0.35 USD, adding only one dollar will get you four rides.

To recharge the card, you have to find a supermarket that offers this service (look for a sign that says Venta de Tarjeta y Recarga ) or head to Albrook Terminal. You’ll be able to navigate the bus system with the help of Google Maps.

Panama City’s first metro line opened in 2014 (the first metro system in all of Central America), but it is pretty irrelevant for tourists since it’s far away from the beaches and interesting sights. A ride is only $0.35 USD. The metro runs from 6am-10pm daily (even on holidays), with 14 different stations, running north and south and passing through the city center.

Bicycle – Cycling in Panama City is possible, but not very safe since Panama is known for its notorious drivers who often speed. The only places you can safely cycle at are Amador Causeway (where you’ll find several bike rental places) and Cinta Costera, the coastal beltway that links modern Panama City with the historic Casco Viejo neighborhood. You can rent bikes for about $15 USD per day.

Taxi – Taxis are cheap in Panama City. Be careful though: Panamanian cab drivers are known to try to rip off foreigners. Make sure to always negotiate your fare before the start of the trip, since the taxis don’t use meters. Note that taxis are cash only.

Ridesharing – Uber is available in Panama City and is cheaper than taxis, so stick to using it if you need a ride.

Car rental – You won’t need a car to get around the city, however, they can be helpful for exploring the region if you plan on leaving the city. Rentals can be found for as little as $25 USD per day for a multi-day rental. Most rental agencies require drivers to be at least 25, though some will accept drivers at 21 if they have a credit card.

When to Go to Panama City

Panama City has a short dry season between January and May, which is when there is little rain and you’ll get to enjoy clear blue skies. But since Panama is located only nine degrees north of the equator, temperatures are pretty consistent year-round.

The lowland regions, including Panama City, are always hot and humid. Daytime temperatures average 30-33°C (86-91°F), nighttime temperatures are around 21-23°C (69-73°F).

Rainy season in Panama lasts from mid-April to mid-December, but it usually only rains from late afternoon into the night, which means mornings and early afternoons can still be enjoyed. The rainiest month is November, and July and August are the months that see the least rain during the wet season. If you visit during the rainy season, pack a rain jacket and an umbrella.

You never have to deal with peak season crowds in Panama City – it never feels crowded, unless you run into a cruise ship tour group on one of the days a cruise ship docks in the port. The good news is that the cruise ships docking here are relatively small and that they usually depart at 5pm.

The only times of year that accommodation can book up (especially affordable hotels/Airbnbs) are during holidays and in February during Carnaval. If you’re planning to visit Panama City in February, look up the dates of Carnaval to avoid crazy crowds and inflated prices.

How to Stay Safe in Panama City

Panama City is generally safe but pickpocketing can occur, especially on city buses. Always be vigilant and don’t carry more cash on you than you’re planning to spend. Leave your passport and credit cards (other than the one you may be using) back at the hostel/hotel, don’t carry valuables in your purse.

Bag snatching also happens in Panama City – both on the street and in restaurants — so don’t leave your bag sitting on the chair next to you.

If you go out in Casco Viejo at night, but your hotel is in the newer part of Panama City, take a taxi or Uber back to your hotel. The El Chorillo neighborhood, adjacent to Casco Viejo, can be a bit sketchy after dark.

When taking taxis, negotiate the fare before the trip, or you might get ripped off. There have been frequent reports by foreigners about being overcharged for cab rides. If you don’t want to communicate with the driver or you don’t have cash on you, call an Uber via the app.

Keep an eye out for common scams against tourists , such as fake ATMs, taxis that don’t use a meter, and questionable tour operators.

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.).

If you experience an emergency, dial 911.

Always trust your gut instinct. Avoid isolated areas at night, and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID, before you leave on your trip.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past.

Panama City Travel Guide: The Best Booking Resources

  • Hostelworld – This is the best hostel accommodation site out there with the largest inventory, best search interface, and widest availability.

  • Unbound Merino – They make lightweight, durable, easy-to-clean travel clothing.
  • Top Travel Credit Cards – Points are the best way to cut down travel expenses. Here’s my favorite point earning credit cards so you can get free travel!

The Ultimate RV Guide to Snowbirding Panama City

There’s more than just sun on a beach in this panhandle gem. snowbirding panama city is an art form—from where you park, dine, and even dance..

By Marc Acton

Florida’s weather changes dramatically from Summer to Winter, going from hot to slightly less hot. But the Sunshine State’s sneaky secret, and what keeps millions migrating there, is that it’s also a great parking spot for Winter. It might not be hot enough to get a leathery tan on the sand, but there’s plenty worth of other awesome highlights to snowbirding Panama City.

Resort By the Beach

One of the best reasons to visit any beach along the Panhandle is the plethora of RV parks within walking distance (sometimes stone-throwing distance) from the Gulf. In the offseason, most parks will run between $50-70 a night, even with direct beach access.

Visit: Camper’s Inn Inc . Their rates for November 1 through February 28 are $65 daily and $390 weekly, with a discount if you only need a 30-amp site.

Eat Your Weight in Seafood

PCB (aka Panama City Beach) is not a great spot for highfalutin foodies. It’s basic. Chain-driven. But the Gulf is a fantastic source for a huge variety of seafood. So just about any old joint is going to have something just off a fishing boat. What the locals know is that the right combination of a spot near water, the perfect evening glow, just-shucked oyster, warm-not-hot weather, and tasty beverage is never hard to find.

Try: Fresh oysters at Simply Seafood & Oyster Bar, cooking your own shrimp from Shrimp City, or Caribbean vibes right on the Gulf at FINNS Island Style Grub .

Visit the National Naval Aviation Museum

Nicknamed “The Spirit of Naval Aviation,” this museum is great for kids and kids at heart . It’s packed with all forms of flying vehicles, and from a virtual aircraft carrier flight deck to an Apollo 11 virtual reality experience, the displays are as impressive as they are delightful. Time it right and you can even catch a practice (at no extra charge!) of the Blue Angels, which are typically 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Take Note: At this time, the museum is only admitting current Department of Defense ID Card holders, meaning active or retired military, or civilian employees of the DoD. Each card holder can escort up to 15 non-cardholders, so if you’re not military, bring a friend who is. And be sure to check the museum’s website for the most current admission info.

Catch Ghost Crabs After Dark

Sure, the beach shines in the summer sun. But there are plenty of ways to enjoy it without sweating, like catching that last sliver of sun dipping under the horizon on a sunset walk. And there’s fun to be had after dark, too. Bring a flashlight (a cell phone will do in a pinch, but a headlamp is perfect). Walk the sand just past the surf and look for tiny crabs darting around. When you come close, they’ll bury themselves just under the sand, where they’re easy to grab. Their teeny pinchers are harmless, and they’re easy to pick up by hand (wash your hands after). But a beach toy sand sifter works great for an easy pickup.

Tip: This is a great way to get the kids a little runaround exercise time before bed as crab chasing can be mini cardio. Get these crab-catching pointers from a kid!

Get Wacky at a Senior Prom

There’s no denying that when it’s at its vacation-y best, Florida is a bit of a spectacle. Panama City’s senior citizen center embraces that every year, putting on an annual “Senior Prom”—which is exactly what it sounds like. There’s evening wear, a dance floor, punch, and even a “winter resident prom king and queen.”

The Deets : This year’s event is on February 10 at the Edgewater Beach and Golf Resort . It’s $10 to attend and worth every penny.

Panama City Beach: The Ultimate Seenager’s Guide to Activities

When Suzy was younger she did not understand why anyone would leave her beautiful state of North Dakota to winter in Florida. Suzy’s only experience was Orlando and it was hot and muggy. Do not judge Florida landscape or other places in Florida by one stop, one time in a theme park in the beginning of summer. Sharon introduced the Gulf of Mexico to Suzy in 2014. It was the place Suzy dreamt about to escape to when she would float in her pool, a white sandy beach, and blue blue water. It exists in the United States. Getting close to retirement age, this was the place Suzy wanted to be.

So why call someone who leaves the great north to go south during the winter,a snowbird..  In looking into this the term snowbird started in the early 1920’s to describe migrant workers heading south for the winter. In the late 70’s it became a term for those living up North in Canada and Northern states coming to the south to escape the harsh winters. Now many refer to them as “winter residents”.

Suzy thinks the term “snowbird” is more fun hence the funny Meta AI photos created of couples on a big white bird for this article. The Whee sign hides the hideous hands AI has created, a whole another story could be written about the three armed, six or four fingered, weird eyed people AI creates, all for fun, a laugh to Suzy. Here is a few of the things the Sisters of the Spoon have found to do in the Panama City Beach, Florida area or PCB for short. They have been wintering in the area since 2017. Traveling to Florida may make you feel like a seenager. A seenager is a teenager feeling trapped in a Senior aged body.

Just some of the things the Sisters of the Spoon have found to do

First stop, sign up for the newsletter at the Visitors Center 17001 Panama City Beach Parkway, Panama City Beach, FL (at the intersection of Highways 79 and 98) get a calendar if they have one.  The center sponsors some fun events for winter residents, the Homecoming January , the Grande Finale and Suzy’s favorite the Prom

Ask to get on Richard’s email list at the Visitors Center. He sends out contests from time to time and you could win tickets to events or gift certificates. You can’t win if you don’t enter. Suzy and Sharon have played the contests and have been winners in the past.

Every year we have been in PCB except during Covid the Panama City Beach Visitors Center invites the Winter Residents/Snowbirds to attend a fabulous dinner and dance not just once but you have three  opportunities. The first is the Welcome or home coming event which is January 10, 2024 and tickets go on sale on the 8th. , Second is the Senior Prom tickets go on sale on February 5, 2024 and the Prom is February 8, 2024′ and the third is the Grand Finale with tickets going February 19 on sale with Grand Finale held on February 21. Look for the Sealife Art, Dolphin, Sea Turtle or Sea Horse in different locations in Panama City Beach. The program,  introduced in 2020 , allowed community members and groups to paint 11 marine-themed statues that were installed as public art throughout the city. In 2023 the city unveiled 5 more dolphins and 5 sea horses. The Sisters of the Spoon have not seen the latest sea life as it happened in June. Pier Park recently also had a painted art mural installed in the breezeway near the Skywheel in Pier Park.

Across the highway east of the Visitor Center is a fabulous seafood market which brings us to the next thing to do, enjoy a seafood boil.

Enjoy a Seafood  Boil

What is a seafood boil? It is the generic term for cooking seafood, shrimp, crab, crawfish by steaming or boiling often with sausage, potatoes and corn.

Located at 111 S Highway 79 Panama City Beach, Fl. Buddy’s is a fresh seafood market offering a variety of Florida shrimp, and other catches. At Buddy’s you pick out your shrimp they will steam it and they also offer potatoes and corn. The potatoes are sliced and have a cheese on top. We love the royal red shrimp which is plumper and a little sweet. We get the meal steamed and take back to the condo and dine gulfside on the balcony.

panama city winter travel

Temporarily closed as they are relocating to a larger venue located in Pier Park, look for the lavender colored building. Every Friday at 4pmTootsies at Pier Park offers a FREE shrimp boil with a $5 drink purchase which includes corn, potatoes with the jackets, sausage, and shrimp with melted butter sauce for dipping. Come early and get your table because this packs in the crowd. They also have live music. Sometimes they have a restroom attendant which can come as a surprise to the guys. Shhh, Don’t tell let them find out.

panama city winter travel

The Local Steamers is located at 14656 Front Beach Rd Panama City Beach, Fl (850) 866-9330 . They offer their boil with you choosing the fixin’s. They have different kinds of shrimp, crab and sides. You can dine in or take out and they have a delivery service too. Again we recommend those yummy royal reds. For videos check their page out.

Watch a Sunrise or Sunset

One of our favorite things to enjoy. Just looking at the beach, the beautiful gulf view, watching a sunset, walking on the beach listening to the squeaky sand or watching the sunset.  Panama City Beach video playlist

Please share your photos in a post on our Facebook group Things to do, Places to Dine in Panama City Beach

Many times people ask where do you find the best shells? We have the best luck after bad weather, early in the morning and near the piers. Make sure anything you pluck out of the shallows or off the beach is no longer living. Sand dollars will appear white when they are no longer living. If you find a starfish being carried in, catch and release a little further out. Also do not pick up jelly fish or any blue creature that is puffed up like a balloon. They sting.

panama city winter travel

While out for your walk on a beach be sure to look for marine life and sea shells. We found these sand dollars at Shell Island, if they are dark greenish/gray then they are still living put back in the water ASAP. The star fish was found after a stormy day by the pier. The starfish was still living so we quickly snapped a photo and placed back in the water. For more videos on the beach check out this playlist on our YouTube channel. If you are going to wade or swim (if it is warm enough for you) in the gulf please heed the warning Flags. A red flag, is too deep to enter pass knee deep. Double red flag do not enter the water. Please read our post about Beach Warning Flags .

This ride is a blast and you may see a ton of dolphins. Suzy recommends videoing the dolphins with your cell phone rather than trying to snap photos as they move too fast to get a good photo. Then after the cruise review your videos, zoom in and screen shot the dolphin up close. The quality might not be the best for printing but it works well for showing others. We recommend buying tickets in advance during the summer season but when snowbirds are in town, the cruises may just be starting end of February or beginning March.

Visit Gulf World Marine Park

We enjoyed the dolphin shows they have at the park and strolling through the park seeing the other marine life there. They also offer swim with the dolphins and dolphin encounters. Gulf World Marine Park is located at 15412 Front Beach Rd, Panama City Beach, FL

Tootsies is Temporarily closed as they are relocating . On Mondays and Thursdays in the past years Runaway Island has Karaoke with Mike. Mike also has the Karaoke over at the Bayou on the Beach check our Facebook group for Karaoke listings and our Daily Things to Do Panama City Beach on this website.

This video below is of a very entertaining gal who sang when we were at Runaway Island for Karaoke. There are some very good singers and everyone is entertaining. Currently Runaway Island is undergoing renovations so Karaoke is not being held there and they have a limited menu of food and drinks that can be ordered. Line dancing is very popular at many of the bars. If you do not know how to line dance and want to learn classes are offered at Frank Brown park or at the Lyndell Center by the Senior Center. FYI the indoor pickle ball courts are open at the Frank Brown park. Complete Senior activites are found on the city’s website . Sharky’s on Monday nights 5pm to 8pm has a fun Karaoke crowd.

Have Lunch at one of Suzy’s favorite spots

What is a Fatty ? Just a big sandwich. Suzy and her husband love Fatty’s. Suzy usually has the Albuquerque Turkey which is served on a deliciously warm soft crusty bun loaded with turkey, lettuce, tomato, bacon, provolone cheese, mayo and avocado. Her hubsand changes it up sometimes the meatball sandwich, sloppy joe, or something new to him. They also have pizza, salads, wraps, and much more. The place has a 70’s kind of hippy vibe. The ladies bathroom is awesome! The staff is friendly and service is good. We love the place.

panama city winter travel

Salty Sue’s has great daily lunch specials for only $8.99 (as of this writing please verify with the restaurant) on Mondays they have a delicious huge Country Fried Steak. They also have an everyday Lunch special of pulled pork which is a huge portion we often have to take part of it home. Their smoked wings are so yummy!

Take in one of the many festivals in the area

This is one of the Sisters of the Spoons favorite an authentic Mardi Gras celebration to attend. It starts out with the Krewe of Dominique Youx’s great Mardi Gras at the Beach parade in the evening, lots of beads to catch, and no funny business to get the beads, wink, wink if you know what I mean. It is a family event. Then there is music at the Pier Park Celebration stage by a Zydeco band usually Chubby Carrier with the Bayou Swamp Band. If you do not know what Zydeco music, it will get you up and dancing in the street, washboard playing, accordion and more. The celebration continues on with a headliner concert and more Zydeco music on Saturday then crescendos with a beautiful fireworks display which can be seen from the beach, the piers, your gulf front balcony or pretty much anywhere you look up.

St Andrews and many place all along the gulf also have Mardi Gras celebrations. For more info on other Mardi Gras in the area check out our post Mardi Gras Celebrations Near Panama City Beach Area

The Annual Panama City Beach Scottish Festival will be at Frank Brown Park on  March 2, 2024, so some snowbirds may have already started the trek back north. Bring your hats, sunglasses, and folding chairs.  There is great food like scotch eggs, music, lots of bag pipe musicians, vendors and the #HighlandGames are fun to watch. This video is of a couple of the #caber tosses. The poles or cabers weigh up to 130 pounds and are 16 to 20 pounds long. The goal is to get the pole as close to the 12 o’clock position as thrower can. Suzy and her husband have attended two festivals and really enjoy them.

Experience the beautiful parks in the area

Florida has many beautiful state parks. Every park has a different entrance fee, there is also camping at some. A disabled honorable discharged military veteran can get a pass at no charge.  Information on passes and costs to parks.

This place is a garden of Eden. Every February the Friends of the Eden Gardens hosts a Camellia festival. The festival in 2024 is on February 10, 10am-2pm. The Camellias are in all their budding glory and you can purchase some too.  Their is music entertainment and activities throughout the grounds. It is about a 35 minute drive on US 98 from Panama City Beach. They have this huge tree in the center of the grounds called the wedding tree, because many weddings have been performed there. Near the water by the Park you can see oyster beds and they have placards telling how oysters make their home.  Their is also a home you can tour on the property. This place is beautiful and peaceful.

We love going to St Andrews State Park which is on the far west end of Panama City Beach. From the park seasonally you can take a shuttle to Shell Island. Shell Island does not have a lot of shells, at least when we have been there.

We usually rent a pontoon from Scotty’s Boat Rentals and drive over towards the very end of February or beginning of March. While heading to Shell Island, we have spotted dolphins. Once we arrive, walking on the beach and wading in the shallow crystal clear water is how we spend some of the time there.  The pontoons cannot be taken into the gulf. If you do go to Shell Island keep in mind there are no facilities of any type, no bathrooms, no dining. It is just a beautiful island.

St Andrews park you can easily spend the day. Swimming in what they refer to the “kiddie pool” , a calm shallow beach area protected by rocky jetties, or a picnic at one of the picnic areas. There is camping available too.

We usually walk on the beach and drive through the park, stopping at Gator lake, if it is sunny you may spy a gator out of the water sunning themselves but they hide. The photographs of the alligator Suzy took back in 2017 since then we have not seen one so close up. We have seen them in the green shallows of the lake but usually just the snot and their eyes out of the water. On the walking path we have heard gator noises or at least that is what one passerby told us what the sound was. Be sure and stop in the Welcome Center at the park’s entrance. This is where we have spotted deer up close and the center is full of informative displays.

There is different wildlife you may see at the park

panama city winter travel

The park is about 1 hour northeast at 1130 State Park Road Chipley FL of Panama City Beach. You could easily take in the Ponce De Leon State Park first and then travel on to this park. Two parks in a little day trip. Plan it to also take in dining or sights in Chipley, Florida. The state of Florida may be flatter then North Dakota. Just like North Dakota you will not find many waterfalls and the highest one may not even be visible. It is dependent on the weather condition. Falling Waters Sink is a 100-foot-deep, 20-foot-wide cylindrical pit into which flows a small stream that drops 73 feet to the bottom of the sink. The water’s final destination is unknown.

panama city winter travel

The Ponce De Leon Springs 2860 Ponce de Leon Springs Road Ponce de Leon FL 3 is about an hour northwest of PCB. The first time the sisters made a visit to this park was in 2014, since then we have made a few more trips to the springs.  Springs are magical places. The first time Suzy she remembers the scent of cedars. A good scent, reminding her of opening a cedar chest or one of those cedar souvenir boxes at a souvenir shop back in the day. Many swim in the warm springs.  Suzy has just hung her feet over the edge in them. The sisters like to journey on many of the little walking trails throughout the park. After your visit you could travel onto the Falling Waters State Park and see Florida’s tallest waterfall.

panama city winter travel

Located 465 Wakulla Park Dr, Wakulla Springs, FL is about 2 hours north east of Panama City Beach Fl. You will lose an hour as the park is on Eastern time. Our suggestion is to book a boat tour in advance in late February. The boat runs as long as it is above 45 degrees.  The tours were all booked up already. The photos below are from one of our boat tours. Manatees do make appearances at the Springs.

Enjoy a early bird dining discount

It is located at 14521 Front Beach Rd, Panama City Beach, FL 850-634-4884  . It has beautiful water front dining. At sunset they walkout on boardwalk and ring a bell.

Stop for Donuts

The Sisters of the Spoon love love love the donuts here. They serve other food but they really like the donuts. Their all-time favorite is the key lime donut. Sharon thinks the boxes are a pretty pink, her favorite color. While at Thomas’s donuts take a photo in the donut cutout. Also take a walk across the street to look at beautiful Laguna Beach, the west end of PCB.

Suzy and Sharon wanted a way to share recipes and some of their adventures with family and friends. Heck why not with the world. They both like to cook, craft and travel but usually have two very different ways of doing things. So they started this vlog (a blog with lots of videos). They especially like to make a dish for instance roasted chickens or pumpkin pie but use different recipes and methods to achieve the end result. It can be comical with the measuring, chopping or the mishaps that ensue, it is for the fun of it and to just have fun. We won’t say who is older but one did teach the other how cooking should be done whether or not they follow it is another thing. Suzy lives in North Dakota, Sharon lives in Minnesota (she moved from Fargo ND after living there oddles of years). They both go south to escape the frigid cold from their respective states. It has been Panama City Beach, Florida but that can change from year to year, one flying one place and the other driving another or ??? Life is always adventure with these two!

5 Reasons to Choose Panama City Beach This Winter

panama city winter travel

If you are looking for a great holiday travel experience this winter, Panama City Beach might just be the perfect destination for you. We have been told that "the beach is always the answer" and we couldn't agree more! The warm weather and beautiful beaches make this one of the best destinations in America, all-year round,  but especially during the winter season. This is not only great for families looking to get away, but also couples and friends of all ages too!

In this blog article, I will be talking about five reasons why Panama City Beach should be your number one choice when it comes to travel destinations during winter.

panama city beach white sand florida

1) Beautiful Beaches

The first reason why Panama City Beach is a great travel destination during winter time is because of its beautiful white sand beaches. The soft, sugar-like sand will make you want to never leave the beach and explore all that this Florida city has to offer. With multiple spots along the coast line, there are plenty of different kinds of sand for you to choose from!

Some of the beaches in Panama City Beach are also dog-friendly so if you want to bring your four legged friend along for this winter holiday, they will more than welcome with open paws. So whether you're looking for a romantic day out on the coast or just simply some time relaxing and enjoying nature by yourself, the beaches of Panama City Beach are always a great choice.

When you visit the beach during winter, it will be like having your own private spot to yourself. The water is still warm and inviting so there's no need to worry about swimming in chilly waters or sitting on ice-cold sand. Instead, the beaches of Panama City Beach are just perfect for you to enjoy with your friends and family during this holiday season.

2) Nice sunny and warm weather

The average temperature in Panama City Beach is 75° F (25° C) - It's never too cold or hot in Panama City Beach, making it the perfect destination no matter what time of year you plan to travel. We have beautiful beaches, sunshine and relatively warm waters for swimming, so there is plenty to do all year round!

The bright sun will also offer great photo opportunities to create memorable holiday photos with your family and friends that you will cherish for years to come. So make sure to not forget your camera equipment when packing your bags.

If you're looking for something a little more traditional we also have tons of great little boutiques and gift shops along Thomas Drive, Front Beach Road or in the Pier Park area.
  • Entertainment: There are tons of different things to do when it comes to entertainment in Panama City Beach including dining out at Pier Park or the many restaurants along Front Beach Road, playing some mini golf on one of the many courses in the city, watching a show at the theater or checking out the attraction parks such as The Gulf World Marine Park or ZooWorld.

If you're looking something a little more action packed, you could head over to the go-karts or even try skydiving!

4) Holiday Attractions & Events

If you are visiting Panama City Beach over the winter holidays, you will find there are plenty of fun family attractions waiting for you.  The "Beach Home for the Holidays" event at Aaron Bessant Park serves as the site of carol-themed concerts, an annual tree lighting ceremony, an appearance by Santa and lots of family activities.

Panama City Beach also organizes a Christmas parade along Front Beach Road with marching bands, parade cars and floats decked out with Christmas lights and decor.  The parade takes place during the evening and night-time hours, for a great light show experience.

Also, you are sure to catch great holiday concerts and  shows at the many theaters and entertainment venues located in Panama City Beach. Just check out the local websites for schedules of upcoming events!

5) Ocean Activities

Last but not least, there is a wide range of activities to do in and around the water.  You can try water sports, fishing charters, boat rentals, dolphin cruises & tours just to name a few! Or you could try snorkeling, jet skiing or parasailing for a real thrill! Panama City Beach also offers many different kinds of eco-boat tours if you want an up-close look at Shell Island Beach and all the beautiful waterways.

If that's not your thing then there are still plenty of other things like canoeing, kayaking or paddleboarding.

The choice is yours!

If you're looking for a place to escape this winter, look no further than Panama City Beach, Florida. There is truly something for everyone, making it the perfect place to visit during winter. 16 things to know before you visit Panama City, Panama

Glossy showrooms, high-rise condos and luxury shopping malls illuminate Panama City’s banking district.

This has been the epicenter of prodigious real estate development in recent years. Panama City is an international banking center and global trans-shipment hub with generous offshore tax structures and strong secrecy laws. Dubious money, laundered through real estate, has been transforming the city’s oceanfront since the Noriega years. Despite this chequered past and present, it's important to remember that as a tourist in Panama City, you’re highly unlikely to encounter cartel-related violence.

It’s safe to travel alone. The banking district is well policed, at least during the day, and most crimes are the low-key and opportunistic type you'll encounter in any major city. Parts of the city are rough and tumble, others are no-go, but most are benign. You will have no problems if you stay alert and follow big city rules.

From planning your trip to local etiquette, here’s what you need to know before traveling to Panama City.

1. Study a map before choosing where to stay

Every neighborhood has its advantages and disadvantages. With cobblestone streets and Spanish colonial architecture, the historic quarter of Casco Antiguo is the most memorable and romantic part of the city. It has a plethora of high-end restaurants, luxury lofts and swanky rooftop bars, but a dearth of budget-friendly eateries and its public transport links aren’t the best.

The Calidonia district in the southern part of the city occupies a grid of streets from Plaza 5 de Mayo to Calle 42 Este. Avenida Central bustles with market stalls, and the roads to the south are dotted with budget-friendly hotels. The district is near plenty of Metro trains and buses . You can pick up cheap street food during the day when kitchens open for local hospital staff and civil servants. After dark, however, Calidonia becomes shady and downbeat with limited dining options.

To the east of Calidonia, the so-called banking district is a patchwork of several districts or corregimientos , including modern and emerging neighborhoods that host the lion’s share of high-end lodgings and Airbnb rentals. There are a few hostels and not nearly enough economical hotels. Many decent restaurants are dispersed throughout the banking district but are not always within walking distance.

If you’re in town to party, the Marbella and Bella Vista neighborhoods have great access to the bars and clubs on Calle Uruguay. El Cangrejo is an entertainment zone with a casino, good Metro train links on Vía España and a parade of restaurants on Vía Argentina.

2. Time your visit for budget-friendly deals and great weather

The high season coincides with the dry season , mid-December to early April, when prices are generally higher. The major festivals of Christmas, New Year, Carnival and Semana Santa see a price increase in the capital, but not as much as the beaches , where most city-dwellers spend the holidays.

Mid-April to early December is the cheapest time to visit Panama City, as long as you don’t mind getting soaked by the rain. Most deluges last only an hour or two in the afternoon, but the season gets wetter as it goes on. In the depths of it, the skies can be overcast for days, but the rains are usually intermittent, and the cloud cover can bring relief from the relentless Panamanian sun.

3. You're better off with a Metro card than a car

Although a car is good for day trips out of town, don’t plan on driving much in the city. The one-way road system is baffling, city thoroughfares are often congested, and diversions are par for the course.

Instead, use Panama City’s public transport system , which includes a fleet of air-conditioned buses and Central America’s first-ever Metro train. Buy a three-in-one “Rapi-pass” upon arrival and gain access to Metro trains and buses and the departure gates at Albrook bus station.

4. Always keep a stash of low-denomination bills

You'll need to show your ID and sign a register if you pay for anything with a higher bill than USD$20. Counterfeit money is an issue in the country, so all $50 and $100 bills will be scrutinized in Panama.

5. Don’t smoke in public

Legislation introduced in 2008 banned smoking in public places. People who smoke in non-designated areas are subject to fines of $25–100.

6. Dress for comfort but look sharp

Panamanians like to dress up and look their best. The ostentatious displays of fashion on display in Obarrio include stiletto heels that somehow survive the assault course of the city’s pavements. When socializing, casual attire is fine, but avoid wearing shorts and sandals to nice restaurants or social functions.

7. Tip hotel cleaning staff

If you stay in a hotel, leave a tip for the person who cleans your room – USD$2–3 a day is fine. A 10% tip is often added in good restaurants, but not always – check the bill before paying. In low-key local eateries, you may leave some loose change for the server. Unless they help with luggage, taxi drivers don’t expect a tip.

8. Don’t use drugs

Although Panama City is steeped in narco dollars, Panamanian society frowns on drug use, and the law does not tolerate it. If the police find you in possession of even small quantities of marijuana, you could spend several years in a Panamanian prison.

9. Don’t expect people to speak English

Panama City Spanish is Caribbean Spanish, extremely fast and heavily laden with jerga (slang). If Spanish is not your first language, you may struggle to catch it.

Don’t expect to find many English speakers during your day-to-day transactions. English is widely spoken in the business community, but not much outside of it, and mastering a few basic phrases of Spanish will help you get around.

10. It's safe to drink tap water

The tap water in Panama City is perfectly safe to drink. Save on plastic waste by refilling water bottles at a faucet. If you prefer purified water, you can refill at the 20-liter garrafones in most hotel lobbies.

11. Prepare for environmental hazards

Panama City is an urban hothouse scratched out of the jungle. The elements are fierce – humidity is often 100%. You should take a day or two to relax and acclimate to the heat if you come from a cold-weather country.

Always apply sunscreen before going outside and keep an adequate water supply handy. Wear light clothes and a hat to keep the sun off your face. Bring a sturdy umbrella if you visit during the wet season.

Panama City suffers from flash floods during heavy downpours. If you get caught in a storm, you could end up wading through deep puddles. Traffic is generally heavy, and many parts of the city are not pedestrian-friendly. People living with asthma may find their symptoms are aggravated by fumes.

Sadly, the Bay of Panama is a dump for industrial effluence and untreated sewage, so the oceanfront malecón sometimes reeks.

12. Be aware of common scams

Scammers operate in all big cities, and some target tourists. Be wary of strangers who tell unfortunate and earnest stories that end with them asking for money. If it seems suspicious, it probably is. Watch out for fake tour guides who ask for payment in advance and then stand you up.

Old-school taxi scams that involve going around the houses to increase the fare can happen anywhere in the world, but in Panama City, it’s common for taxis to simply overcharge. There are no meters in the cabs. Fares are supposed to be based on zones, but in practice, they rarely are. If you look foreign, taxi drivers will bump up the fare. It's best to negotiate and agree on the price beforehand.

13. Solo female travelers may receive unwanted attention

Panama City is typically safe for solo female travelers, but it's best to avoid walking alone at night in Casco Antiguo, Santa Ana or Calidonia. Women may receive attention from chatty men on Metro trains or buses. If a man won’t leave you alone, ask a nearby older woman to assist.

14. Steer clear of sketchy neighborhoods

Thirty years ago, Casco Antiguo was dicey. Today, things have somewhat improved, but there are still pockets of the old neighborhood where you should exercise caution. If you’re staying in Casco Antiguo, the 20-minute walk from the nearest Metro train station, 5 de Mayo, is risky at night. Use a taxi or an Uber instead. To the west of Casco Antiguo, the neighboring El Chorrillo district is very dangerous and neglected. You should avoid this neighborhood entirely.

The district of Santa Ana, north of Casco Antiguo, is bisected by the pedestrianized peatonal , a lively shopping street that is safe to walk during the day; stay alert in the crowds. The side roads east of the peatonal are sketchy, and you shouldn’t wander around them. At its north end, the peatonal connects with Plaza 5 de Mayo, the National Assembly, a Metro station, a bus terminal and a grimy confluence of roads and flyovers. The area is lively into the evening, but stay alert and use a vehicle after 11pm.

North of 5 de Mayo, Avenida Central strikes into Calidonia district with street vendors and hustle. It's fine to explore in the day, but don’t flaunt expensive equipment or jewelry. Calidonia is spooky and seedy after dark. Avoid run-down or poorly lit streets.

15. Keep your documents handy

Everyone is legally required to carry a photo ID at all times in public in Panama. Tourists should carry their passport or a photocopy of their passport with the photo page and immigration entry stamp.

16. LGBTIQ+ travelers are welcome

Attitudes in rural Panama are somewhat conservative but less so in Panama City. LGBTIQ+ travelers are unlikely to encounter prejudice, and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is prohibited by Panamanian law. There’s a lively gay scene in Casco Antiguo and El Cangrejo.

Best Times To Visit Panama City Beach

The best time to visit Panama City Beach is from May through October. Though the area boasts an average of 320 days of sunshine per year, late spring, summer and early fall offer some of the warmest air and water temperatures. Plus, by avoiding a visit in March or April, you'll dodge the deluge of college students who descend on the area's ivory sands every year for spring break. You'll save on lodging prices during the area's low season (November to February), but it'll likely be too chilly to enjoy the ocean.

Madelyne on the Move

The Ultimate Panama City Travel Guide

I love this town on Florida’s Emerald Coast! It’s hard not to fall in love after seeing its white-sand beaches and clear waters. I thought I’d create a Panama City travel guide to help others planning to visit this beautiful beach town. In this post, I’ll cover everything you need to visit Panama City, FL, including the best time to visit, things to do, where to stay, and the best restaurants in the area. I also think you’ll find this post helpful if you’re trying to decide between PCB and Destin for your next vacay!

Panama City, FL Travel Guide

Best time to visit panama city, fl.

The key to visiting the panhandle is to go when school is in session, so you’ll experience the best weather without a huge crowd. This makes mid-May and late-August through mid-September the best times to visit.

The coldest month is January, with average highs of 63°F. If you’re looking for a casual winter travel destination, Panama City is a great choice. Of course, you won’t be spending time in the ocean during wintertime. If you want to be able to get in the ocean, book a late spring or late summer trip! Winter is better for activities like walking along the beach, reading in a beach chair, and fishing.

Things to do in Panama City, FL

Obviously, there’s the beach, which is probably more than enough for the beach bums! I visited in the winter and realized that there are tons of great things to do in the PCB area in addition to the beach. There are parks all over! I loved St. Andrews State Park and Camp Helen State Park (PCB is nestled right between the two). There are also plenty of places to shop – Pier Park being the main hub with tons of shops, restaurants, and beach access right across the street.

St. Andrews State Park

Entrance sign to St Andrews State Park

St. Andrews State Park is located just minutes away from PCB. There’s an $8 entry fee per vehicle. Within the park, there’s a mile-and-a-half of beaches for fishing and swimming. You can also hike, bike, camp, picnic, and more within the park. If you’re an outdoorsy person, you definitely want dedicate a day to this park while you’re in PCB! For more information and the latest updates, check out the St. Andrews State Park website .

As I mentioned before, Pier Park is the main hub for shopping. It’s an outdoor mall with tons of shops (everything from department stores like Target to boutiques like Francesca’s), restaurants, and beach access right across the street. There’s also a huge ferris wheel called the SkyWheel. You could easily entertain yourself (or your family) for hours here. There’s plenty of parking too, which is always nice!

Camp Helen State Park

Woman in a dress on the beach at Camp Helen State Park

Whereas St. Andrews State Park is east of PCB, Camp Helen State Park is west of the city. This park is a super cool spot with a lot of history – more on that here . Remnants from an old pier (pictured below) still stand. There’s a beautiful marsh behind the old pier and walking trails throughout the park.

FYI – You do have to hike about 7/10 of a mile to get to the beach from the parking area. It’s not bad, but it’s not something I’d want to do with a ton of beach gear either because you’re walking through sand most of the way. For more information and the latest updates, check out the Camp Helen State Park website .

Shell Island

Shell Island is technically in St. Andrews State Park, but the main way to access this area is via shuttle. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make it to Shell Island since I visited in late December and the shuttle doesn’t run in the winter. However, this seems to be a must-see spot based on the reviews!

According to the Shell Island website, “The official  Shell Island Shuttle  runs every 30 minutes from 9 to 5 seven days a week in summer.” You can rent a boat, go on a dolphin tour, snorkel, or relax on the beach. If you have littles that enjoy shell hunting (or you like to collect them yourself), this would be a great place to add to your itinerary!

Russell-Fields City Pier

Russell-Fields City Pier in Panama City Beach, FL

Across the street from Pier Park, you’ll find the Russell-Fields City Pier. The pier extends out 1,500ft into the Gulf of Mexico and offers incredible views of the area. I highly recommend watching a sunset from here! There’s a $3 fee per person to walk on the pier. You can also fish off this pier with a license.

Day Trip to Destin, FL

Sunny afternoon on the beach in Destin, FL

Destin is just an hour away from PCB and 100% worth a visit. In comparison to PCB, I’d say that Destin is a bit more upscale. Something to note if you’re trying to decide between the two: there are a lot more options in terms of hotels/condos in PCB, especially if you want something that’s right on the ocean. PCB is also a bit less crowded than Destin and the more affordable destination of the two, but you really can’t go wrong either way.

If you do end up in Destin, make sure to grab a bite to eat at The Back Porch. It’s a beachfront restaurant and their seafood is AMAZING. You have to try the crab bites appetizer!! I also recommend visiting Henderson State Park in Destin, FL. The park features the cleanest white sugar sand beaches and breathtakingly clear waters. This area definitely had the prettiest beaches I saw throughout my entire trip (pictured above). The entry fee is $6 for a vehicle with 2-8 passengers ($4 for a single occupant).

Best restaurants in panama city, fl.

Seafood from The Back Porch in Destin, FL

  • The Back Porch – There’s another location in Destin, which I mentioned. Seriously, make sure you hit one location or the other at some point (or both if you’re like me hahah). Their slaw is to-die-for and every seafood dish I tried was amazing.
  • Local Steamer Seafood Market – Nothing more than a little hole in the wall but they serve the best seafood in PCB!
  • Bayou on the Beach – They have Cajun-style seafood and a bit more to choose from than Local Steamer’s. Great food and service! Give the Who Dat Shrimp a try.
  • Nick’s Slice Of Brooklyn Pizzeria And Bar – The perfect place to satisfy a craving for pizza & wings! They serve a wide variety of specialty pizzas so you shouldn’t have trouble finding something you like!
  • New York Pizza & Grill – There are two locations in PCB: one on Panama City Beach Parkway and another in Pier Park, which will almost definitely be more crowded at any given time due to the location. They don’t have quite as many options as Nick’s when it comes to specialty pizza, but it’s another great option nonetheless.

Options for everyone

  • Runaway Island – Sooo much amazing food to choose from here! They have a lot of seafood options but serve both burgers and chicken/steak dishes as well. The best part: it’s beachfront so you can enjoy your meal while taking in gorgeous ocean views!
  • The Wicked Wheel – Very limited options in terms of seafood but TONS of choices when it comes to chicken and burgers. Whether you’re in the mood to build your own burger or munch on some hand battered chicken tenders, this place has you covered.
  • Dee’s Hangout – Delicious food and huge portions. They serve everything from filet mignon to tacos. Their hush puppies are the bomb!! Try those or the Hang Bang Shrimp for an appetizer.

I hope you enjoyed this Panama City travel guide! If you plan on road tripping to the panhandle, check out my blog post on road trip essentials .

Great idea to visit when kids are in school and the weather is good. It looks like such a relaxing and beautiful area! Crab bites on the Back Porch make it sound perfect!

Visiting Panama in Winter – What to do

panama city winter travel

Panama is located well inside the tropics with a pre-equatorial climate, being placed at the crossroads of Central and South America. The good thing about Panama is that it has two seasons. The dry season that occurs from December to March and the wet season that lasts the rest of the year.

The northeastern winds prevail which bring some rainfall on the north side that faces the Caribbean Sea, when the sea is warmer. The south side facing the Pacific Ocean, the weather becomes very dry and the country comes alive with adventure, activity and great wildlife spotting opportunities! It is hot almost everywhere, and the sun shines with very little rain.

To find a bit of cooler weather, there are the tierras templadas, or “temperate lands” in the area surrounding Boquete, a quaint colonial town in the beautiful highlands of Panama.

During the dry winter season, the little rain that does occur comes in the form of aguaceros, which is the Panamanian way of describing a thunderstorm of torrential downpour. These walls of water occur very sparingly throughout the months and last only for some minutes, usually in the afternoon, or early hours of the night. While the weather can sometimes be described as very unpredictable in Panama, the dry season makes way for a lot of tourism for people escaping the oppressing and cold climates back home.

The dry season is the best time to visit Panama because it is summertime in the Equatorial nations, meaning that the heat and dry landscape from the south comes up and touches Panama in a beautiful and pleasant way, perfect for vacationing and fun! It is especially ideal to visit Panama during the winter months because it is much different than traveling during the long, wet season. For example, scuba diving in Panama during the dry season makes way for clearer waters as opposed to the wet season because the visibility is extremely ideal due to the lack of rain.

Where to go in Panama in Winter

Panama city.

panama city winter travel

Panama City is the biggest and most famous city in the country, as well as being a household name of the region. This city is a beacon of economic prosperity and the frontrunner of stability in an otherwise increasingly unstable region. With over 1.5 million inhabitants, the city is the entrance of the Pacific as well as the Carribean. Founded by Spanish Colonists, it was a stopover of one of the most important trade routes in the world at its time, so prosperity is something that Panama City has experienced since time immemorial.

Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Casco Antiguo, the old town of Panama to step into the rich colonial past of the city, as well as getting a good view into the modernity of the country. The Panama Viejo is a great way to see the city’s initial inception and learn about its uphill battle against the pirates that infested the seas. Best of all, visit the Panama Canal to get an experience of one of the most important trade passages in the entire planet! Panama City in the winter is especially pleasant because it allows you to walk through the city without having to worry about humidity and rain all day. Another great catch to being in Panama City in the winter is experiencing Carnival in a beautiful Latin American city.

Read our detailed guide: What to do in Panama City

Located on the Southern Pacific coast of Panama, Las Tables is the centre of Panamanian folk music, art, food, culture and architecture. Its name meaning “the boards”, comes from the ship that was taken apart to build the first settlements in the town. The political landscape in Las Tablas was also unique as one of the most beloved presidents in Panama was from Las Tablas. What it is best known for is its Carnival culture. The city comes alive but also splits apart into two carnival factions. Calle Ariba (Uptown) and Calle Abajo (Downtown) are on the same street but divides the town into a competition of queens, parades, fireworks, plazas, food, concerts and extravagance in a way to outpower the other side. To get a taste of this, the winter is the best time to pay the city a visit!

The Carribean capital of Panama, Colon has always been known as Panama’s second city. The site of an American military outpost, the city was a centre for the American expat community. Later becoming a centre of Latin American Carribean commerce, Colon was the centre of the Panama Railroad. During its heyday, the city was known for its nightclubs, cabarets and theatres. Massive restoration has created a revival in the city after decades of decline. During the winter, Colon is a great centre to get to the beach towns and Carribean beaches of Panama. The dry season creates a great snorkelling opportunity since the water is so clear from the lack of rain!

What to Do in Panama in Winter

Jazz and jive.

panama city winter travel

In January, Panama City comes alive in a way that is unique. Started in 1965, the Panama Jazz Festival is a multi-day extravaganza that attracts the world’s best jazz artists and spreads them out throughout this Latin American metropolis. The best thing — the concerts take place in the pleasant outdoors and are completely gratis! Put your jazz hat on and get your jazz hands out because you will be having a great time jiving and jamming to one of the world’s most beloved genres!

Costume at Carnival

Resumen del Carnaval de Las Tablas 2019

One of the most important events of the year in Panama, Carnival takes place during the commencement of the Lent festivities, and is a time when the entire country comes together for a feast of the eyes, taste and feel! Live music overpowers the cities, where people dance for days. Food stalls smelling up the avenues and providing a delicious taste of Panama with traditional and contemporary fare. Parades line up and down the streets in an extravagant display of celebration. There is a pageant for the Carnival Queen and a crowning where water is sprayed from the floats! Another unique Carnival custom are water balloon and water gun fights! While all cities in Panama experience a great time and are equally great places to get in on the festivities, Las Tablas is the best place to go for Carnival!

Sea fare at the Sea Fair!

Historia de la Feria del Mar en Bocas del Toro.

Along the beach fronts of Isla Colon, there is a great excuse to have fun in the sun, other than just being there! The Feria del Mar is a great place to experience the beautiful seaside culture of the country. Panama is surrounded by stretches of water, and a thriving history of sea-based culture gives this festival legitimacy to be a celebrated and well worth event to attend! Free sea snacks are thrown out at people as you can visit the parades and the exhibitions of the boats built or decorated by the fishermen and boatmen of this country. You will be able to take boat rides along the beach, look at the beautiful craftsmanship of the local industry, and dance around to live music performances of this dynamic and thriving nation!

Fabrics, Fashion, Fun!

panama city winter travel

The Pollera is the beautiful traditional garb of the Panamanian woman. The pollera is a long, full skirt with many gathers. This was a very common dress of the women of Europe at the time and said to have been brought over to Panama from Spain as early as the 1700s. This is a beautiful cotton skirt printed in beautiful floral designs most commonly used in tropical climates. These are very closely related to the traditional dress of the Southern Spanish region of Andalusia. La Pollera Festival was established to create awareness of the dress and to keep up this beautiful cultural garb. Women from around the country come with the best ateliers of the area to pay homage to this traditional and very special art. There are pageants, parades and awards for the best Pollera in many categories.

What to Pack

For the coasts and the inner plains of Panama, bring lightwear, and a sweatshirt for the evening, and the blasting air conditioning. Some snorkeling equipment is ideal, as you will be using the clear waters of the dry season to your advantage, so bring those water shoes and trunks! Sunscreen and a sun hat is very important all year round in Panama, so it is very important to bring things that will protect your skin from the blasting sun. If you want a cooler experience in the highlands, make sure to get a pair of very good hiking boots.

12th annual Winter Residents Senior Prom held in Panama City Beach

P ANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Sometimes they’re referred to as “winter residents.” Other times, the endearing term “snowbirds” is used.

No matter what you call them, they move down to Panama City Beach for a few months at a time.

“There’s just tons of things that people are coming down for, and just wanting to get involved in the community. We have such a lively community that everyone wants to be a part of,” said Sydney Clifton, Communications and Social Media Manager for Visit Panama City Beach.

They flock south because, in PCB, it’s all about having a good time.

“Everybody just wants to have a real fun time while they’re here. We are the ‘Real Fun Beach’ for a reason, and we want to keep them coming here,” Clifton said.

One of the events that keeps them coming every year is the Visit Panama City Beach Winter Residents Senior Prom.

“It’s our 12th annual [senior prom], we’ve been having it since 2012, and it’s an event to welcome our winter residents that come from all over the world, mainly some of our northern states,” said Bill Poteet, Information Specialist for Visit Panama City Beach.

Folks have been migrating to the area for winter for many years.

“I’ve been coming down here for two months for approximately 20 years,” said Bob from Cincinnati.

“We’ve been coming here since ‘93,” said Paulette from Cleveland.

“In 1986 we came down here and built a house,” exclaimed Mary and Bob from Massachusetts.

“11 years, since we’ve been retired,” said Dick and Gladys from Wisconsin.

“We’ve been coming here for the last 15 years,” remarked Parvathie and Bob from Canada.

While the food and the friendship are a big part of the event, the highlight is the dance floor. No matter if it was a fast song or a slow one, everyone was dancing and having a good time on Wednesday night at Edgewater Beach and Golf Resort.

“People just think we have fun in the summer, and March, and spring, but the real fun sometimes happens in the winter, and these folks know how to have a good time,” Poteet said.

The winter residents say there are tons of reasons they come to spend a significant portion of their year in Panama City Beach.

“They have so many activities for us, you can do something all the time. It’s just wonderful,” said Paulette.

“Where we come from its minus-25, and we like this a lot better. We just love the entertainment, and we’ve made a lot of friends in Panama City,” said Parvathie and Bob.

“It’s sort of a party community. Everybody goes dancing here. We’re all family. One big family,” noted Mary and Bob.

“We have friends that we meet here every year, from all over the country. Panama City Beach is our number one city,” said Dick and Gladys.

No matter which winter visitor you ask, there’s one common thread.

“The people are just so pleasant here compared to up north, I gotta tell you. Nice people,” Paulette said.

It’s the friendly, southern hospitality that keeps these folks choosing Panama City Beach over and over again.

“Florida, you can’t beat Florida, it’s so much fun down here. We probably have 60 friends down here, and three up north,” Mary and Bob laughed.

The event was held at Edgewater Beach Resort in Panama City Beach.
