Natalie Grant had just soared through “O Holy Night” in awe-inspiring fashion, sending fans to their feet in rapturous applause and prompting the evening’s other co-headliner, Danny Gokey, to marvel at the Grammy-nominated vocalist’s incredible talent.

“Listen, if you aren’t in the Christmas Spirit yet,” Gokey remarked to the crowd, “there’s something wrong with you.”

Nope — nothing wrong with this audience, which definitely turned out ready to celebrate the reason for the season as the two talented vocalists brought their holiday show to 3Crosses Church in Castro Valley on Monday night (Dec. 11).

The concert — which sold out well in advance — was attended by some 1,400 fans, who were in joyous spirits as they witnessed two of contemporary Christian music’s most popular artists mine the Christmas songbook as well as perform other similarly themed material.

One of the best things about the show was the chance to see just how comfortably and naturally the two stars interacted onstage, as Grant and Gokey blended their voices seamlessly, bantered playfully and did everything but finish each other’s sandwiches.

They exhibited the type of chemistry that can only come from playing many shows together over multiple years. Indeed, this is the pair’s eighth holiday season tour, although only the second to make it this far west.

“We should come to the West Coast more often,” Grant said to the audience members, none of whom would’ve argued the point.

This Celebrate Christmas Tour was sponsored by K-LOVE, the Northern California-born radio station that has grown over its 40-plus years of existence to become a coast-to-coast powerhouse that is enjoyed by millions upon millions of listeners each week.

Mac Powell opened the show in terrific fashion, showcasing his deeply warming voice on a number of enjoyable songs from his new “Christmas” EP.  Backed by a four-piece band, the Alabama crooner charmed the audience with solid renditions of the original composition “Christmas Time Again, My Friend” and the Harry Connick Jr. holiday number “I Pray On Christmas.” Other highlights included a powerful take on the title track from his latest full-length — 2021’s “New Creation” — as well as a visit back to his time with Third Day for “God of Wonders.”

The co-headliners of the night — Gokey and Grant — then took the stage together and opened their set with a gorgeous version of the centuries-old carol “O Come, All Ye Faithful.” Performing in front of a tall Christmas tree, as well as a 10-piece band that included three backing vocalists and a three-piece horn section, the two stars sounded great as they mixed their voices for the joyous crowd.

Gokey — who finished third in the voting on the eighth season of “American Idol” in 2009 — then left the stage and Grant — a five-time winner of the Dove Award for female vocalist of the year — delivered a nicely upbeat version of “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!”

The stars then flipped places, allowing Gokey the solo spotlight on the Andy Williams classic “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” The duo then regrouped to take on the original number “The Holidays Are Here” from Gokey’s second seasonal effort, 2019’s “The Greatest Gift: A Christmas Collection.”

The process would repeat multiple times over the two-set show, with Grant and Gokey taking turns under the spotlight and then occasionally reuniting under the bright lights.

As mentioned above, Grant’s high-flying take on “O Holy Night” was a jaw-dropping moment. Yet, Gokey would provoke a similar response from the crowd with his gorgeous solo take on “Mary, Did You Know?,” which, for our money, is the greatest Christmas song written in the last 40 years. (And yes that’s counting “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which we also enjoy).

Gokey and Grant turned to “I Speak Jesus” — the popular single from Charity Gayle and Steven Musso — to close out the second set in incredibly powerful fashion. Sure, it wasn’t technically a Christmas number — it’s more of an all-season song. Yet, it delivered the Good News of a child being born in a manger nonetheless, as the the singers united their voices to ring out, “Your name is power / Your name is healing / Your name is life.”

Mac Powell, originally from Alabama, moved to Atlanta, GA as a sophomore in high school where he would soon co-found the Christian rock band Third Day. Throughout their nearly three-decade career, the band sold over 10 million albums, earned four Grammy Awards, one American Music Award, and 24 Dove Awards, and was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. I'm planning to travel to moscow early in the new year enroute to china (by the trans-mongolian train). We originally planned to go first week in January but now I see that Christmas there is 7/1/08/

Will there be much open at this time or delay it a week or 2?

What exactly do you want to be open? Most offices will be closed for holiday but all of the recreational facilities will be wide open.

January 07 is a period of school vacations when the most popular museums are overcrowded - so it is better to come later.

Weekend 3/1/08 - 6/1/08 and then on for the tuesday trains. If not I'll go the same days the following week

Museums and shops and things I am interested in. These will still be open then?
