Jomsom is a pristine city that is windy in the afternoons and evenings. Jomsom is very popular with apples in Nepal. We will also visit apple orchards and gardens on this Jomsom Muktinath hike. We found several brands of apple liqueurs here in Jomsom.

Muktinath, a famous Hindu pilgrimage site where the god Vishnu is worshipped, conveys spiritual feelings as part of Jomsom Muktinath trekking. According to Hindu mythology, all sins are washed away when we bath in Muktinath, So many Hindu devotees from India and around the world visit Muktinath.

We also visit other beautiful cities like Marpha and Kagbeni. In Marpha, you can see beautiful orchards. Kagbeni offers us fascinating views of the Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, and Tukuche peaks.

Jomsom Muktinath Trek – Discover The History Of The Annapurnas

Asia , Nepal

jomsom-muktinath-trek-routes

The Jomsom Muktinath Trek is part of the legendary  Annapurna Circuit Trek in Nepal. The trek typically takes 12 to 15 days, but can be completed in as little as 5 days as well.

Jomsom Muktinath Trek Overview

On the Jomsom Muktinath trek, you will take in caves, ruins of ancient forts and Buddhist monasteries. Never in the course of this trek will you be higher than 12,464 feet. This ancient trade route follows the Kali Ghandaki River and is now one of the most developed trekking trails. It is also used by Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. The lower part is Hindu while the upper is Buddhist.

Natural scenery ranges from forests of dazzling rhododendrons to rocky cliffs and desert. Some of the landscape of this rain shadow zone resembles the moon. The region is known for the most dramatic altitude variations found anywhere. It is possible to see eight of the 20 highest mountains on Earth: Dhaulagiri (26,788 feet); Annapurna I (26,538 feet); Annapurna II (26,040 feet); Nilgiri (23,097 feet); Annapurna South (23,684 feet); Annapurna III (24,787 feet); Mt. Annapurna IV (24,688 feet); Machhapuchhare (Fishtail in English, 22,959 feet) and Annapurna South (23,684 feet).

The local people, Thakalis, have traditionally been traders. They have converted their charming and wonderfully clean abodes into tea houses and count themselves among the most gracious and justifiably successful innkeepers in Nepal. If you stay at Chez tea house, make sure to chat with the sougi – the inn keeper – who will regale you with yarns of life in Nepal.

Please Note: The highlight of this trek is unquestionably the temple at Muktinath (12,464 feet), which is dedicated to the god, Vishnu, one of the three supreme deities. It has natural gas fires and 108 waterfalls. It is believed that bathing using all of the waterfalls washes away sins. Devotees do this even when temperatures are freezing.

Regional Map

The trek occurs in the district of Mustang, commonly known as the Himalayan Shangri La. This is around 11 miles northeast of Jomsom, a major trading centre.

Below is a schematic map which shows the Annapurna region in which the Jomsom Muktinath trek is situated.

Jomsom Muktinath Trekking Route

Typical itinerary.

Please note that there are several Jomsom Muktinath Trek itineraries that can be done. Below we have laid out the most popular version – 13 days, leaving from Kathmandu. However, this trek can be made much shorter. If you want to make your own way to Jomsom, then you could probably organise this with your operator or guide.

You will arrive in Kathmandu.

You will spend the second day in the city, overwhelmed by the choice of places to visit. One of the principal attractions is the Swayambunath Stupa – the Monkey Temple. It is said to be over two thousand years old. The eyes painted on each of the four sides represent the all-seeing power of Buddha.

One of the holiest Hindu shrines in the world is located at Durbar Square. Many sadhus – Hindu ascetics – reside here. It becomes crowded during religious festivals. It is an enticing melange of courtyards, pagoda temples and palace buildings.

jomsom mustang trek

A bus takes you from Kathmandu to the beautiful town of Pokhara on the banks of the Phewa Lake. The Devi Falls are not to be missed.

The flight from Pokhara to Jomsom will show you first hand just how high the Himalaya mountains are. The villages you see are so isolated that they are a minimum of three days’ walk to the nearest town.

The last moments on the flight are brilliant when the plane crosses a gorge very near the end of the runway.

Flights are only in the morning because it gets so windy in the afternoon. You will then trek to Kagbeni, where there is a checkpoint. Here, you will stay for the night.

You will ascend rapidly to Muktinath at 12,464 feet. This is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sights for Hindus. Holy water flows from a 108 carved spouts that surround the Vishnu temple in a grove of poplars. Muktinath is also home to a great many ethnic holy Buddhists and Tibetans, who come to the temple to witness fire miraculously burning in a stream of water inside a small but very sacred temple.

jomsom mustang trek

You will now make your way downhill through fields and poplar groves where you reach the valley of the Kali Gandaki River. You will then trek south through the valley to Jomsom where you stay for the night.

Day 7

You will descend to Marpha, a delightful village of whitewashed houses surrounded by fertile fields. You will continue to follow the Kali Gandaki before reaching Tukuche (which has long been a Thakali trading centre). You will arrive at Kalopani, which offers a fantastic 360-degree view of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. You will stay at Kalopani for the night.

You will take a beautiful walk that transitions to sub-tropical vegetation, making your way among banyan trees, poinsettas and water buffalo. Both river and trail pass through a narrow gorge. You will descend and cross a bridge close to a stunning waterfall before trekking through the valley to Tatopani, where hot springs beckon.

While climbing inexorably throughout the day, you will swap terraced fields for dense rhododendron forest as you near the village of Ghorepani where you will stay the night.

jomsom mustang trek

Early in the morning, you can visit the renowned Poon Hill for breathtaking, all-round views of the Annapurna range at sunrise. The best time for photographs is early morning or sunset as, otherwise, there is precious little contrast between sky and mountain. Your adventure now takes you to Pokhara.

There is a brief early morning climb to the Deurali Pass for a spectacular panorama that extends south to the plains of India, with Dhaulagiri and Annapurna on the way. The trail then descends quickly through dense moss-covered forest teeming with bird life before bringing you to Tadapani, where you can experience intense sunset views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre.

The trail continues to descend rapidly through dense, damp forest where you may spot some monkeys. You will cross some rock-cut steps. You will stay the night at Ghandruk, whose museum of traditional Nepalese life is fascinating.

You will face an unrelenting, downward trek among remarkably green cultivated terraces and beautifully-preserved farms. You will come to the Modi River, to which the trail sticks all the way to Birethani. Trekking ends and the drive back to Pokhara begins.

You will return to Kathmandu by car.

Jomsom Muktinath Hike FAQ

How much does the jomson muktinath trek cost.

Prices for the Jomson Muktinath trek generally start at around $1,000 per person and can be as high as $2,500 depending on the trek operator. It is also possible to complete this trek unsupported for under $1,000.

Are permits required for the Jomson Muktinath hike?

Yes, you need a permit for the Annapurna National Park to complete the Jomson Muktinath trek. You will also need to register with the Trekkers Information Management System.

When is the best time to do the Jomson Muktinath trek?

The best time to do the Jomson Muktinath trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (mid-September to mid-December). The weather will be warm by day and the sky clear with outstanding views. At night, temperatures can be below freezing, so make sure you pack warm clothing. Trekking in winter is possible but less popular.

Towards December, the weather starts getting particularly cold and the routes get distinctly quieter. If you are a hardened trekker, a winter Annapurna Circuit (late December through February) can provide a very authentic Nepal trekking experience .

The main challenge of a winter trek, apart from the cold, is the snow and ice that often obstructs the higher trails and the Thorung Pass. During bad winter seasons these trails may be closed.

Is altitude sickness a risk on the Jomson Muktinath hike?

Yes, there is a small risk of altitude sickness on the Jomson Muktinath trek because the trail ascends to some high-altitude points. At its highest point, Muktinath, you will reach an altitude of 3,799 meters (12,464 feet).

Fortunately, because of the treks length, the opportunities for appropriate acclimatisation are good, and hence the prevalence of moderate or sever altitude sickness is low.

Even so, it is important to have a solid understanding of the risks associated with high altitude trekking and how the body acclimatises to high altitude. We recommend you read our detailed article on  altitude sickness .

How difficult is the Jomson Muktinath trek?

The Jomsom Muktinath trek can be as short or long as you make it, and difficulty levels vary because of this. The longest version is considered fairly challenging, although not as difficult as the full Annapurna Circuit. The short 5-day option is much easier and only requires a basic level of fitness.

Lower Mustang Trek

Lower mustang trek - 10 nights 11 days.

jomsom mustang trek

  • Trip Overview

The Lower Mustang Trek, also known as the Jomsom Muktinath Trek, is a popular trekking route in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It offers a diverse and scenic journey through the lower region of the Mustang district, showcasing beautiful landscapes, traditional villages, and stunning views of the Himalayas. Here are some key points about the Lower Mustang Trek:

Duration of Lower Mustang Trek: The Lower Mustang Trek typically takes around 7 to 11 days, depending on your itinerary and walking pace. It’s a moderate-level trek suitable for most people with a reasonable level of fitness.

What you will see from the Trek: The trek offers breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, including peaks, Nilgiri, Tukuche, and Dhampus Peak. You’ll also encounter the Kali Gandaki River Gorge, the world’s deepest gorge, and walk through charming villages such as Kagbeni, Marpha, and Jomsom.

Culture and Traditions of Lower Mustang Trek : The Lower Mustang region is predominantly inhabited by Thakali people, who have unique cultures, traditions, and cuisine. You can immerse yourself in the local lifestyle, visit monasteries, and witness the influence of Tibetan Buddhism in the area.

Muktinath Village Culture: The trek culminates at the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath, located at an altitude of 3,800 meters. Muktinath is a significant religious site for both Hindus and Buddhists, featuring a temple, 108 water spouts, and natural gas fires.

Lodge Service during the Trek: The Lower Mustang Trek offers a good range of teahouse accommodations along the trail. You can find basic guesthouses with essential amenities like food, lodging, and hot showers in most villages. However, it’s advisable to carry a sleeping bag and be prepared for occasional power outages.

Necessary Trekking Permits: Permits Like other treks in Nepal, you will need two permits for the Lower Mustang Trek: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card. These permits can be obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

It’s important to note that trekking in the Lower Mustang region may require careful acclimatization due to its altitude. It’s recommended to consult with experienced trekking agencies or guides who can assist you in planning your itinerary and ensure a safe and enjoyable trekking experience.

The best time to do the Lower Mustang Trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons in Nepal. These months offer the most favorable weather and optimal trekking conditions in the region. Here’s a breakdown of the seasons:

Spring Season (March to May: This is considered the best time for the Lower Mustang Trek. The weather is generally clear, and the temperature is mild, making it pleasant for trekking. The spring season brings beautiful blooming rhododendron forests, adding vibrant colors to the landscapes.

Autumn Season (September to November: Another excellent season for the Lower Mustang Trek, autumn offers stable weather with clear skies. The temperature is moderate, and the visibility is excellent, allowing you to enjoy panoramic views of the mountains. It is also the peak trekking season in Nepal, so the trails can be more crowded compared to spring.

Monsoon Season: While spring and autumn are the recommended seasons, it’s important to note that the Lower Mustang region lies in the rain shadow area of the Himalayas, which means it receives less rainfall compared to other parts of Nepal. As a result, trekking in the Lower Mustang area is possible even during the monsoon season (June to August) . However, the trails may be muddy and leech-infested, and there can be occasional rain showers. Winter (December to February) is generally cold, with snowfall in higher elevations, making it less popular for trekking in this region.

The guide recommended: It’s always a good idea to check the weather conditions and consult with local trekking agencies or guides before planning your trek to ensure the best experience.

Drinking water Service during the Trek: Most teahouses along the Lower Mustang Trek offer boiled water for a small fee. Boiling water for at least 3 minutes kills most bacteria and viruses. However, ensure that the water has been brought to a rolling boil and allowed to cool before drinking.

Flight Transport Service: We take a plane for part of the Lower Mustang Trek. The Jomsom Airport, located in Jomsom, is the main airport in the region and serves as a gateway for trekkers. Many trekkers choose to take a domestic flight from Pokhara to Jomsom to save time and effort.

The flight from Pokhara to Jomsom takes around 20-25 minutes, offering a scenic aerial view of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. The flights are operated by several domestic airlines, and the schedule may vary depending on weather conditions and demand.

Toilet and Bathroom Service during the Trek: On the Annapurna, Langtang & Everest trek, shared toilet facilities are more common than en-suite bathrooms. They may be located in the main building or in an outhouse.

Where do we eat dinner: Meals are always served in the dining room, so you can meet other trekkers there. In higher accommodations, the dining room usually has a fire around dinnertime.

If you are a first-time high altitude Trek: No matter who you are, as long as you are reasonably fit, can walk for 5-6 hours a day, and trek-hike a few uphills, the Nepal Alsace Trek & Expedition team will support you to the fullest to transform your dream of standing

Charging Batterise Service: In most of the trekking regions , there is electricity whereby you will be able to charge your iPod and Camera batteries but they charge you extra money 100 to 400 Nepali rupees per hour.

Accomodaition Service in Lower Mustang Trek: Lower Mustang package trek , you will sleep at Tea Hose local lodge every night which will be very basic with two single beds. Toilets are mostly shared with other trekkers. We eat in the tea house lodge and even stop for lunch during the Lower Mustang trek.

Here is the best SIM card for the Annapurna trekking region

In Kathmandu, you can buy Ncell SIM cards almost anywhere. These cards are very helpful when trekking to the Annapurna region. In most places, Ncell’s network coverage is excellent, with the exception of the Everest region trekking area.

Jomsom Muktinath Trek

jomsom-muktinath-trek

Jomsom Muktinath trek is a classic route that goes along the world’s deepest gorge of the Kali Gandaki River in the Annapurna region of Nepal. Anyone with a moderate level of fitness can do this trek and the maximum elevation to reach is at 3,760 meters in Muktinath. Muktinath Temple has become a popular pilgrimage destination among Hindus of India after the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a homage in 2018.

We fly early morning from Pokhara to Jomsom and start our trek on the Tibetan Plateau and arrive at Kagbeni. Kagbeni serves as the gateway to the ‘Forbidden Kingdom of Mustang’ also known as ‘Upper Mustang’. The next day we trek to Muktinath, a popular and sacred place for Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. The temple has 108 water taps emerging from sacred water springs for religious bath.

Alternatively, Muktinath Darshan by Jeep is another way to visit Muktinath. Similarly, Muktinath Yatra by Helicopter is an ideal trip to the luxury travellers.

Brief Itinerary:

Some major attractions of Jomsom Muktinath trek include typical Mustang villages, hundreds of years old monastery, caves, local tribes and scenic landscapes. The tree-less barren landscape, a steep rocky trail up and down hill with panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and several other peaks will add some adventures on this trek.

Tatopani is also popular for its natural hot water spring. There is a strong belief to cure many skin allergies due to the minerals present in it. Poonhill is yet another attraction of Jomsom-Muktinath trekking route for panoramic views of the snow-capped mountains. Sunrise at Poonhill is one of the important highlights of Jomsom Muktinath trek.

Is there alternative trekking route available from Tatopani to Jomsom?

The traditional route of Jomsom Muktinath trek is now replaced by motorable roads from Muktinath to Tatopani. The road between Jomsom to Tatopani becomes dusty and can result irritation to the trekkers. So, there is an alternative off-the-beaten trail available parallel to the road across the Kaligandaki River for interested trekkers.

Likewise, the Pokhara to Jomsom flight can be avoided and road journey can be chosen between Tatopani to Jomsom or Muktinath. Once reaching at the Muktinath Temple, we can trek back to Tatopani via the less travelled alternative route. However, it meets the main trail at several points. This unexplored trail also offers the unmatched Himalayan panorama.

From Muktinath, the alternative trekking trail passes through the main villages of Lupra, Thinigaon, Chhairo, Sirkung, Titi, Kunjo, Gadpar, Narchyang and finally joins at Tatopani. The trail offers the breathtaking views of the striking Dhaulagiri, Tukuche and Annapurna peaks. However, the facilities available are basic and seasonal. Please Contact Us for Jomsom Muktinath trek itinerary via the alternative route.

Today we have a 200km (124 miles) drive (6-7 hours by bus or car) from Kathmandu to Pokhara. We take a tourist bus that leaves at 7am from Kantipath, near Thamel. This is a scenic drive along the bank of the Trishuli River with great country side. Alternatively one can also fly between Kathmandu and Pokhara.

We take a scenic flight from Pokhara to Jomsom which will be for about 20 minutes. Jomsom which straddles the Kali Gandaki River, is the administrative centre for the Mustang district and is a busy place with plenty of lodges on both sides of the river and the facilities like shops, banks, a military post, a police check point, an ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project) information office, a health post, a post office and telephone facilities. From Jomsom there are two route options for trekking to Kagbeni, the original stony sandy trail on the east bank, or the new route on the west bank which has some tremendous views. Assuming we take the new track, we will come to a long suspension bridge spanning the river; we cross it and after a while will reach the small settlement of Eklebhatti (2,740m/8,990ft). The name Eklebhatti means “one hotel” but this no longer applies because it now has several lodges and shops. At this point, just before crossing the bridge to the east bank, there is a stunning view of Nilgiri North (7,061m/23,166ft). Continuing along the bank from Eklebhatti, we will come to our overnight stop, the village of Kagbeni which stands at the confluence of the Jhong Khola that runs through the village and Thak Khola (Rivers). This is an important place, as it is situated at the junction of three major trails, heading east, west and south respectively. Kagbeni also has a post office, a police check-post, ACAP information centre, several shops, many lodges and a health post. There are also three mani walls (Tibetan Buddhist prayer walls) adorned with prayer wheels, a gompa (Tibetan Buddhist monastery), a kani (archway) and a large chorten (Tibetan Buddhist monument). Trekking time 2-3 hours.

Today we leave Kagbeni by the path which rises behind “Hotel Nilgiri View” and continue climbing up the south side of the Jhong Khola valley, above oasis-like fields and orchards. After a persistent climb, we will join the direct trail from Eklebhatti which comes in from the right. Continuing on we will come to the “Romeo and Juliet Lodge” and shortly after passing this we will reach the small few lodge settlement of Khingar (3,280m/10,761ft). The trail actually bypasses Khingar and proceeds to climb to the next charming fortress-like medieval village of Jharkot (3,550m/11,647ft) which is located on a spur of hillside with small willow-fringed ponds below. It has a gompa (monastery), a fine kani and a number of lodges. Once through Jharkot the trail climbs a little more steeply and reaches our overnight stop the village of Ranipauwa (3,700m/12,139ft) which is the first part of the settlement of Muktinath. A few minutes’ walk and an ascent of about 90 meters above the village, takes us to the important religious site of Muktinath proper, the focus for so many Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. Here there are shrines, gompas and a pagoda-style temple. The village of Ranipauwa has many lodges, teahouses, a few shops and campsites, a police check-post and ACAP information centre. Trekking time 3-4 hours.

Today we head off westward to Kagbeni retracing the previous days route, then trek via Eklebhatti to Jomosom possibly using the older trail on the east side of the Kali Gandaki river, instead of the new route which was probably used on our way north. It is of interest to note that there is a drop of around 1000 meters from Muktinath to Jomosom which will make life easier (!) Continuing south from Jomosom the trail crosses a wooden bridge over the Syang Khola, a tributary of the Kali Gandaki River and reaches the small village of Syang (2,820m/9,252ft) with a gompa perched on the hill above it. Proceeding on from here, in just under an hour, we should arrive at our overnight stop, the very attractive village of Marpha whose narrow paved street is flanked by many Thakali lodges. The Thakalis who originated in the Kali Gandaki valley have emerged as the entrepreneurs of Nepal and are active in many parts of its commercial life. The village has an entrance kani at both ends, a recently enlarged gompa, several shops, a post office, money changing facilities and a library. Trekking time 6-7 hours.

Today’s trek continues south west along the dirt road on the west bank of the Kali Gandaki river, passes Dhonga and reaches the large important two-part village of Tukuche (2,590m/8,497ft), divided by an open flat meadow. Here there are several lodges and hotels, four gompas, a few shops, a library and a brandy distillery (apple, peach and apricot). Next comes the architecturally interesting village of Kobang (2,580m/8,465ft). The houses here are accessed from a partially enclosed central tunnel designed to give protection from the valley’s strong gusting winds. In the centre of the village there is a pagoda-style monastery and below it a 15th century gompa. Kobang also has a post office, a public telephone, few hotels and a health post. A few minutes further on and almost merging with Kobang is Larjung (2,550m/8,366ft) with four or five lodges. The trail crosses a bridge just before entering Larjung the first building of which is a safe drinking-water station. Leaving Larjung the trail crosses two bridges a little further on a long suspension bridge en-route passing through the world’s deepest valley – the Kaligandaki gorge, before entering the small village of Kokhethanti (2,545m/8,350ft), with its four lodges. On the trek between Larjung and Kokhethanti there are stunning views of Dhaulagiri and Tukuche Peak. The trail now passes below a line of stone-built houses at the settlement of Dhampu (2,502m/8,205ft) crosses a bridge over the Thak Khola river (as the Kali Gandaki river is now called), continues along the east bank to Kalopani (2,530m/8,391ft) and then comes to the adjoining long straggling village of Lete (2,480m/8,136ft) where there are a number of hotels. The village has a government health post and telephone access. From here the trail descends steeply south-east through a stand of pines and crosses a suspension bridge over the Lete Khola. It now continues to the tiny settlement of Dhaiku/Kaiku (2,085m/6,841ft), drops down steps to cross a wooden bridge over the Kaiku Khola and shortly arrives at our overnight stop the three-part village of Ghasa with accommodation available in each section. Some of its flat-roofed buildings stand on stilts. The upper part of Ghasa has a large kani, a gompa and three lodges. Trekking time 6-7 hours.

A few minutes after leaving Ghasa, the trail crosses a suspension bridge to the left bank and then switchbacks high above the river. For a considerable distance south of Ghasa, landslides in the River Kali Gandaki gorge occasionally necessitate the route being switched from one bank to the other. Just under an hour from lower Ghasa we will come to the small two-part settlement of Pairothapla (1,890m/6,201ft) and then after a further thirty minutes or so on a steep descent in a landslide area, we reach Kopchepani, below which we change sides again by crossing a long suspension bridge to the west bank. Continuing on, we pass the beautiful Rupse Chhahara (waterfall) and then after crossing a wooden bridge arrive at the village of Rukse/Rupse (1,560m/5,118ft) where there are orange, lemon and banana trees and fields of maize on the steep hillside. Ten minutes beyond Rupse, in the now widening valley, we pass through the long settlement of Titre (1,630m/5,348ft) and reach the large three – section village of Dana (1,400m/4,593ft), which was once an important trade centre. In its final section there are a number of thatched houses and also from this point, excellent views of Annapurna South can be seen. After crossing another suspension bridge – over a tributary - and passing through the small settlement of (1,630m/5,348ft), we arrive at the popular busy village of Tatopani, an ideal place for a rest day. Trekking time 3-4 hours.

Following the welcome day’s relaxation in Tatopani we head south, with the trail climbing a stairway of stone steps, and after a while we will come to a long suspension bridge which takes us across the Kali Gandaki River to the left bank, from where we enter the small village of Ghar Khola (1,175m/ 3,855ft) located on the tributary of that name. We now cross the Ghar Khola Bridge and fork left away from the main (Beni) trail and climb a steep hillside with terraced fields and exotic trees. At the next fork we bear right and ascend a formidable seemingly endless stairway of stone slabs. Then from Tatopani the trail leaves the forest and we first reach Santosh Hill (1,500m/4,921ft) – with excellent views to the north and south – then the settlement of Birauta and after a short trek arrive at the village of Ghara (1,700m/5,577ft) which has several teahouses and shops. From here we have a continuing climb to reach our overnight stop Shikha. This substantial village is built on ascending levels with teahouses and lodges in the lower part and a few simple shops and a school in the upper region. It also commands striking views of both the high mountains and the surrounding terraced lower levels. Trekking time 4-5 hours.

Today the trek continues to climb and after a while leaving Shikha we pass through the small settlement of Ghopte Kharka from where there are more sightings of Dhaulagiri. Next we reach Phalante (2,270m/7,448ft) with its large school, one shop, a teahouse and two lodges. Further ahead we arrive at Chitre where refreshments are available. The last section of today’s trek from here is still uphill and finally it will take us to Ghodepani/Ghorepani, a bustling village with shops, lodges and camp grounds and because of the attraction of nearby Poonhill/Pun Hill (3,210m/10,532ft), the route at this point is the most heavily trekked in Nepal. Trekking time 3-4 hours.

A Poonhill sunrise is one of trekking not-to-be-missed experiences – it is unique. Therefore as the climb to the summit, among rhododendrons, takes about one hour, we will set out on a path from the centre of the village at least one hour before sunrise. There is a lookout tower on the highest point and below it is a very welcome tea station. Having enjoyed this experience we will then head off for Tikhedhunga after breakfast at Ghorepani. The trail passes pleasantly through rhododendron forest and descends at Ulleri village (1,960m/6,430ft) and reaches to Tikhedhunga (1,540m/5,052ft) where we stop for overnight rest. Trekking time 5-6 hours.

Descending from Tikhedhunga via Birethanti (1,040m/3,412ft) to Pokhara, one can see mules loaded with goods en-route. There is a small Walk up to Nayapul (New-bridge) from Birethanti and we take a drive for one hour to Pokhara by bus or taxi (42km). We then check in to a hotel in Pokhara and relax for the rest of the day. Trekking time 3-4 hours.

We are more relaxed in Pokhara with the beautiful morning and later we drive or fly back to Kathmandu. Regular tourist buses leave at 7am. Option available for extending your trip with Jungle Safari adventure, white water rafting or a trip of your choice.

The Jomsom Muktinath Trek: An Overview

Nepal holds many cultural and natural treasures that will transport you to a different world. A quick flight to Jomsom from Pokhara brings you to the center of Tibetan culture and the wonders of the Himalayas. A great way to immerse yourself in this experience is taking the Jomsom Muktinath Trek in Mustang, Nepal. The trip takes you through windy valleys with views of mountain vistas, unique temples, and monasteries. The temples around Jomsom and Muktinath are the most popular pilgrimage sites for Hindus and Buddhists in the region.

The Jomsom Muktinath Trek is a unique itinerary in the Lower Mustang region . It’s an ideal way to go through Kagbeni, Muktinath, Jharkot, and Lupra without needing to pay for the expensive Upper Mustang permit. Here’s a quick guide on how to make the most out of your trip.

Jomsom-Muktinath Trek Highlights

The trek from Jomsom to Muktinath and back is not very strenuous. It generally takes four days to complete the trek.

Jomsom and Mustang are one of the few places in Nepal that are best visited during the monsoon months (June to August) . This is because they are located in the rain shadow of the Himalaya and receive little rainfall. The drawback is that flights from Pokhara to Jomsom are frequently delayed at this time of year due to bad weather, so best to have a buffer of a couple of days on either end to avoid missing any important connections.

Spring (March-May) and fall (September to November) are also good times to go to Jomsom.

The Town of Jomsom

Jomsom is a small town at the base of Nilgiri Himal . It’s the most common base for the trek to Muktinath. Jomsom houses the airport where people take quick flights to and from Pokhara. Here you’ll also find various accommodations and high-end resorts to retreat into after your short trek to Muktinath.

Kali Gandaki River and Gorge

The trek follows the river bed of the Kali Gandaki River, which was created a beautiful gorge. It starts from the  Tibetan plateau to eventually flow into the Ganges in India. Most measurements record the Kali Gandaki gorge as the deepest canyon in the world. The upper reaches of the river are known to be a popular site to find fossilized ammonites, known locally as  Shaligram. In the lower regions of the river, you’ll find local communities inhabited by Gurungs and Magars, Thakalis around Jomsom, and people with obvious Tibetan roots, the Lopa, around Muktinath, and up to Mustang.

Further into the region from Jomsom is Kagbeni. It’s also an alternative place to start the 3-4 hour trek to Muktinath. This is also the farthest you’ll be allowed to go without environmental permits and mountain guides. It’s less commercialized than Jomsom. Starting the trek from here varies slightly from trekking from Jomsom. Either way, Kagbeni is known for the 500-year old monastery that holds significant culture and history for the Mustang region. Kagbeni is also known for its iconic views of dahl and rice.

Himalayan Views

The trek from Kagbeni to Muktinath reveals panoramic views of the Thorong Peak, Nigiri, and Dhaulagiri. The views can be quite overwhelming with the Himalayas towering over you as you follow the trail. The ascent is very gradual, giving you more time to enjoy the surroundings without laboring too much.

The Pilgrim site of Muktinath

Muktinath is best known as the pilgrimage site for Buddhists and Hindus. The Hindus make the pilgrimage for salvation. They believe that the waters in Muktinath deliver salvation after death. It is also believed that the Hindu god, Brahma, lit the eternal flames that burn at Muktinath.

To  Buddhists , Muktinath is a place of meditation and introspection. This is following in the footsteps of great sage Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) who came to Muktinath to meditate. If you happen to be in Muktinath in early September, you are likely to be in time for one of Nepal’s unique festivals, the annual horse race known as

Visiting Muktinath in early September brings you in time for the annual horse race called Yartung . It’s a week of Tibetan-style horse racing and merrymaking that brings the whole village to come alive.

Lubra, the last Bon village

jomsom mustang trek

From the slow descent of Muktinath back to Jomsom, you’ll pass by the last pre-Buddhism village of Lubra. Here you will find even more history and culture of the Mustang region. From here, the views are also breathtaking. You can traverse the pastures towards the ridge closer to the Dhaulagiri range for a closer view of this towering peak.

Permits and Regulations

Sticking to the Lower Mustang region of Jomsom to Muktinath saves you a lot of time and money. You will need an Annapurna Conservation Area permit ($20) and TIMS card ($10)  for trekking in and around Jomsom. These can be arranged in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

You can also opt to go beyond the Jomsom area if you have more time or you want to see a whole lot more. You can continue to the Upper Mustang region from Kagbeni. Instead of heading to Muktinath, you can head to Lo Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang. This adds another 8-10 days to this itinerary. A tour guide is required and the permits for Trekking in Upper Mustang cost $500 for 10 days .

Accommodations

The Jomsom Muktinath Trek is fairly popular, so the trekking facilities are pretty good compared to other parts of Nepal. There are hotels and resorts in Jomsom and Muktinath. The most popular type of accommodation throughout the region are teahouses/lodges. They’re usually very basic but provide blankets and running water. These accommodations will also offer you meals, usually with plenty of fresh vegetables, rice, and noodles. Try not to make your trip in the winter because many facilities are closed, several residents leave the region, and food supplies are scarce.

The Jomsom Muktinath trek is perfect for people who don’t have enough time, or who don’t want to go through strenuous trekking through the Mustang and Himalayan region. It lends its fair share of culture, history, and Himalayan experience with the low-key vibe that Nepal is known for.

Moskva-Class Cruisers

Separate design teams often attempt to meet a set of ship specifications with completely different, although equally valid, strategies. To fulfill the requirements issued in April 2169 for the successor (NX-223) to the Daedalus class, which was introduced at the end of the Romulan War, Prosser & Ankopitch proposed a ship with an extremely large, spherical command hull attached to a nearly vestigial engineering hull. The proposal from the Mikoyan-Tupolev-Dassault Bureau used a long narrow command hull with a minimal frontal silhouette counterbalanced by an equally long engineering hull.

The engineers at Tezuka-Republic decided that the division of ship's functions between a command/crew hull and an engineering hull was arbitrary and unnecessarily restricted design options. Therefore, rather than gathering all the specified facilities in a single hull, their design TR-223A spread them across two hulls, as in Daedalus , and segregated the SSWR-IV-C warp core to a "bustle" at the extreme aft end of the secondary hull. This bustle could be separated easily and quickly from the rest of the engineering hull in the event of a warp core breach. The now-unpowered warp nacelles would then be shed. In this way, the demands of safety would be met without warp dynamics being degraded either by an excessively large frontal silhouette or by longitudinal warp field imbalance.

Although the Ship Specifications Review Board praised Tezuka-Republic for its creative solution to the problem of admittedly contradictory requirements for extreme safety and improved warp performance, they were forced to disqualify design TR-223A for not precisely meeting contract specifications. Therefore, in October 2171, construction contract NX-223 for Starfleet's new cruiser was awarded to Prosser & Ankopitch for what would become the Wasp class .

However, almost no one was happy with the new Wasp ships. Even before the contract was awarded, voices within Starfleet and within industry had strongly criticized the specifications of April 2169. These critics charged that they would lead to a mediocre, albeit safe, fighting ship. Two separate classes were needed, not a single class that was neither a proper explorer nor a proper warship. When Wasp was finally launched in 2173, her performance during precommisioning trials clearly showed that the critics had been correct. Although the performance problems were related in part to the continuing unavailability of the more powerful Tezuka-Republic Hiryu ("Flying Dragon") mark III warp nacelles, Wasp was obviously not the ship Starfleet had hoped for.

In a second attempt to obtain a reliable and capable warship, new specifications (NX-374) were issued in September 2175, little more than a year after USS  Wasp had entered service. Adding to this sense of urgency were intelligence reports suggesting that the Romulans had either developed or otherwise acquired matter/antimatter (M/AM) reactors. This time the specifications put less emphasis upon safety. The original requirement for completely separate command and engineering hulls was eliminated; instead, any hull configuration was allowed as long as the warp core could be quickly separated from the rest of the ship. Furthermore, requirements for speed, acceleration, and maneuverability both under impulse power and under warp power were increased, as were performance levels for target acquisition, tracking, and servicing.

These new specifications were a clear, albeit belated, admission that the critics had been correct all along: one class could not be expected to serve as both an explorer and a main battleship. In fact, starship technology was not considered sufficiently mature for a single ship to adequately fulfill both mission profiles until 2245, when the Constitution -class heavy cruiser was launched. (The controversy continues even today in the wake of the problems of the Galaxy -class explorer.)

Luckily, the designers and engineers at Tezuka-Republic had not been idle since their disappointing loss of the Wasp contract in 2171. Instead, they had spent their time refining design TR-223A so that their new entry (TR-374A) was markedly superior to what had been submitted 5 years earlier. In particular, the new SSWR-V warp reactor allowed the bustle to be made smaller, lighter, and even more easily separable. Therefore, it was hardly surprising when in November 2176 Tezuka-Republic was awarded the production contract over designs from Shimata-Dominquez, Prosser & Ankopitch, Mikoyan-Tupolev Dassault, Monarch R&U, and Thornycroft/Ebisu for what was to become the Moskva class.

However, engineering prowess may not have been the only factor in Tezuka-Republic's winning of the contract. There were accusations that the delay in delivery of the Hiryu warp engines was an attempt by Tezuka-Republic to prevent Wasp from reaching her designed performance levels. While no conclusive incriminating evidence has come to light, the delivery of the long-awaited engines shortly before the scheduled launch of Moskva in December 2177 is certainly suspicious. Tezuka-Republic maintains that if their submission of 2169 had been selected, its performance would also have not have met design specifications without the Hiryu engines. However, critics charge that TR-223A was not as reliant as Wasp on the type of engine used. Furthermore, once the Wasp contract was awarded, and even after Wasp was launched, Tezuka-Republic certainly made no efforts to accelerate delivery of Hiryu.

These controversies were soon rendered moot as the new Moskva class was recognized as a significant advance in starship design. The most important new feature was Moskva's discoid primary hull. Earlier designs had chosen a spherical primary hull for reasons of economy. Simple geometric relationships dictate that a spherical hull has the smallest surface area for a given volume. Therefore, construction costs are lower and shields are more efficient. Furthermore, institutional inertia had led nearly all exploratory cruisers originating until that time from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the United States Astronautics Agency, the United Earth Space Probe Agency, and its successor organizations to have spherical hulls.

jomsom mustang trek

The designers of USS  Moskva employed a biconvex disc for several reasons. Their initial motive was to increase hull volume while minimizing both frontal and lateral silhouettes. A warship with large frontal and lateral silhouettes would be at a greater disadvantage in most tactical situations than would be a ship with an increased superior silhouette. However, the discoid hull allowed the traditional radial layout of command hulls to be retained.

More important than these tactical advantages were functional advantages. As was shown with the Wasp class, warp field geometry would have been awkward if a spherical hull with its relatively large frontal area had been used. The discoid hull was also found to channel warp field flow across its upper surface towards the bussard ram scoops of the warp nacelles. This channeling effect improved field efficiency at all power levels and speeds. As the understanding of warp field mechanics was refined, the trend towards saucer-shaped primary hulls would be intensified in later Starfleet vessels.

jomsom mustang trek

In most respects, the Moskva class continued design and engineering trends established in the Comet and Daedalus classes introduced at the end of the Romulan War. As in these classes, ship functions were clearly divided between a command/crew hull and an engineering/propulsion hull. The bridge was returned to its customary position atop the command hull and the shuttlecraft bay was again placed in the secondary hull. The fusion reactor was centered along the longitudinal axis of the ship, and impulse thrust ports exited immediately in front of the warp bustle detachment seam.

Weaponry was the then-standard mix of fusion-warhead missiles and lasers. New to this class was an early type of ultraphased pulse laser cannon, two of which were mounted in the chin of the primary hull. Although the on-target energy output of this new weapon approached that of early phasers, its power requirement was higher and its range was substantially less. However, subsequent refinements lead to steady improvement and, ultimately, to the development of true phasers in 2202. Although Moskva -class ships were the first to be fitted with phasers in 2204, lasers were still carried by the Moskva class and later classes until the 2220s. Finally, warp capability was supplied by the long-awaited Hiryu mark III drive units.

The first ship of the new class, USS  Moskva (NCC-374), entered service with Starfleet in April 2179. An additional 30 ships (NCC-375 to NCC-404) joined the fleet through 2183. Moskva -class ships gained immediate popularity with officers and crews. First, total laser firepower was increased some 75% over that in the preceding Wasp class. Second, because the ship's mass was more equally distributed along the longitudinal axis than in the Wasp class, Moskva was significantly more maneuverable at both sublight and warp speeds. Finally, the more warp-dynamic design allowed greater cruising and maximum speeds.

The Moskva class had an outstanding safety record. No ships were lost because of mechanical failures. However, an incident occurred aboard USS  Johannesburg in 2186 when a faulty nacelle flow monitor falsely indicated a runaway positive feedback power loop within the plasma flow governor. Believing that a catastrophic warp core explosion was imminent, Chief Engineer Roberta Bocharnikov ordered the warp nacelles and warp bustle to be separated. Although unnecessary, these maneuvers were successful in causing the separated warp core to initiate its automatic shut-down routine. The warp core, nacelles, and the rest of the ship were towed to Starbase 13, where they were successfully re-mated. Despite her supreme embarrassment, Bocharnikov oversaw the reassembly and relaunching of Johannesburg and retained her position as chief engineer.

Although most ships of the Moskva class had left front-line service by 2215, some continued to serve as auxiliaries and training vessels until the 2240s. After retirement from active duty, Moskva -class ships were used as testbeds for many emerging technologies owing to the similarities of their layouts to those of succeeding classes. USS  Moskva was the site of the first successful ship-to-surface transport of a Human being in 2206, and USS  Gato was the first ship to fire photon torpedoes in 2214. In addition, Taurus -class tugs, which entered service in 2182, and Sanford -class repair tenders, which entered service in 2185, were derived from the Moskva class and used the same primary hull and warp drive assembly.

The Moskva -class cruiser USS  Aurora (NCC-377), a participant of the Battle of Eohippus IV, is on display at the Starfleet Museum.

Ford Mustang Mach-E price cuts are proving affordable EVs are in demand

Avatar for Peter Johnson

Ford is moving inventory after slashing prices by up to $8,100 on its best-selling electric SUV, the Mustang Mach-E , last month. A recent Cloud Theory report reveals that the price cuts are working as buyers look for more affordable EVs.

Good news: Ford Mustang Mach-E price cuts are working

Ford cut Mustang Mach-E prices by up to $8,100 in February with new finance and lease incentives. New data shows sales are up while inventory is finally dwindling.

The move came after Mach-E sales fell over 50% in January, with only 1,295 units handed over. In February, sales of the electric SUV surged 64% year over year. However, Mach-E sales were down 20% through the first half of 2023 as Ford retooled its plant in Mexico, where the vehicle is assembled.

According to a recent report from data analytics firm Cloud Theory , the price reductions are working.

Ford Mustang Mach-E movement has been “dramatic and immediate,” according to the data analytics company. The weekly movement rose from around 300 to over 1,000, even reaching over 1,800 in early March.

Ford-Mach-E

Nearly a month after the price cuts took effect, Mach-E tripled its vehicle-movement share in the EV market, hitting 13.3% from 5.2%.

Cloud Theory highlights that despite reports of cooling demand, EVs are still sought after for the right price.

Ford-mach-e-price-cut

The bad news

Although the lower prices are working to move inventory, can Ford afford to keep prices lower?

Ford’s Model e electric vehicle unit lost $4.7 billion last year. The company said the rising losses were due to “extremely competitive pricing” and new EV investments.

EV volume was up 20% last year, but it was mainly driven by the F-150 Lightning. Ford is now trimming its workforce by one-third at its Rouge EV plant, where the electric pickup is built, citing slower-than-expected demand.

Ford-Lightning

Despite rising Mach-E sales, Rick Wainschel, vice president of data and analytics at Cloud Theory, told Automotive News there are some “dark clouds” lingering.

Ford’s Mach-E turn rate continues to trail behind the industry average. Even with the price cuts, the Mach-E’s turn rate reached 33%. Although that’s up from 7% before the reductions, it’s still behind the average of 45%.

According to its data, Ford had around 18,000 Mach-E’s in inventory at the end of March. “It’s better, and it’s climbing closer to a more normal rate, but it’s still below the total,” Wainschel explained.

Ford-Mach-E-price-cuts

At least one dealer is seeing the results. Doug North, who owns North Brothers Ford in Westland, Michigan, said customers who previously saw EVs as unaffordable are “now coming in and looking at them — and buying.”

Although North considered slowing Mach-E allocation, the price cuts “really changed it quickly.” North explained, “It’s working very well.”

Shifting to more affordable EVs

Meanwhile, Ford is shifting plans from large to smaller, more affordable EVs. CEO Jim Farley said the automaker is developing a low-cost EV platform to keep up with Tesla and low-cost Chinese automakers.

Farley said the company assembled a “skunk works” team with some of the best EV engineers. The team is led by Alan Clarke, a top engineer on Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3.

CFO John Lawler reaffirmed these plans at the BofA Auto Summit last week, saying, “The game will not be fought and won with larger vehicles,” smaller, low-cost ones will win in the end.

Ford-Explorer-EV

Top comment by Mitch Hedberg

Everything is "in demand" at the right price. But how much demand at every price is the key.

According to Lawler, the new platform will have several “top hats” for new, low-cost electric SUVs, trucks, sedans, and vans.

A recent Bloomberg Businessweek report revealed the first models to launch on the platform are expected to be a smaller, cheaper, pickup and SUV. The first model is expected to begin rolling out in 2026 with a starting price of around $25,000.

Ford’s low-cost EV platform is designed to rival Tesla and low-cost Chinese automakers like BYD. Farley called BYD’s new Seagull , starting at $9,700 (69,800 yuan), “pretty damn good,” as he warned industry peers.
