15 Best Things to Do in West Lafayette (Indiana)

The most densely populated city in Indiana is dominated in every sense by Purdue University, founded in 1869 and featuring a leafy campus adorned with solemn red brick buildings.

There are around 50,000 students enrolled at Purdue, endowing West Lafayette with a youthful sense of fun, a lot of diversity, cutting-edge culture and lots of university traditions.

Purdue’s varsity teams, the Boilermakers, compete in the Big Ten Conference, and the men’s and women’s basketball teams are especially strong.

On or near the campus are some businesses that have been going strong for more than a century, while Samara House is a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1950s, epitomizing his Usonian style.

1. Downtown Lafayette-West Lafayette

Something special about West Lafayette and its cross-river sister city is the pair are united by a cross-river downtown area.

This has three distinct districts, including Chauncey Village in West Lafayette. This settlement predates Purdue University, and was platted in the mid-1860s by the Chauncey family of Philadelphia, wealthy land speculators.

Chauncey Village has fantastic nightlife, elevated by the university next door, along with restaurants for all tastes. We’ll talk about two venerable establishments, Harry’s Chocolate Shop and Triple XXX, later in the list.

Down the slope, on both banks, is the Wabash Riverfront District, a hub for outdoor events and a fine spot for a wander by the water.

Then across the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge is Arts & Market, Lafayette’s culture-rich core, with its unique shops, galleries and museums all commanded by the Tippecanoe County Courthouse (1884).

2. Purdue University

You can’t talk about West Lafayette without devoting a lot of time to the Big Ten university that colors every aspect of life in the city.

Purdue is a prestigious science university, noted for its contribution to math, science and engineering, producing no fewer than 23 NASA astronauts.

Sports are a major part of campus life, with 18 varsity teams (Boilermakers), including flagship programs in men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball and football.

The elegant, brick-built campus warrants a tour, even if you’re not a prospective student, with a ceremonious ensemble on the Memorial Mall, where the founding benefactor, John Purdue, is buried.

Here you can admire University Hall (1877) and the Purdue Memorial Building (1924). Also spare some time for the Armstrong Hall of Engineering, named for Purdue alum, Neil Armstrong, and featuring a mural celebrating Apollo I astronaut Roger Chafee who graduated from Purdue in 1957.

3. Samara House

By the north end of the Purdue, West Lafayette is home to one of the most complete homes by Frank Lloyd Wright in the United States.

One of Wright’s Usonian homes, Samara House was built in the mid-1950s for John and Kay Christian, respectively a pharmaceutical chemistry professor and social director at Purdue.

The design, requiring large spaces for student gatherings, was developed across six years of meetings with Wright, and the house was named after a samara pod that the architect spotted at the site on his first visit.

Still in the care of the Christian Family, the house is carefully maintained according to Wright’s specifications. Unusually for a Wright house, Samara has a bright color scheme, requested by Kay and chosen with help from Olgivanna Lloyd Wright.

April through November you can book a 90-minute tour of the property, picking up thrilling details about Wright’s design and the Christians’ experiences with him.

4. Tapawingo Park

Heralding your arrival from Lafayette is this vibrant riverfront park, full of life when Purdue is in session.

Translated to “Place of Joy”, Tapawingo Park is connected to the grand John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge, which deposits you at an impressive plaza and fountain on the West Lafayette side.

At the park’s elevated north end, check out the Brown Street Overlook for a satisfying cross-river view, particularly pretty at sunrise for the early birds.

The park is home to the Riverside Skating Center, an outdoor rink measuring 70 feet by 120 feet, used for ice skating in the winter months and then as a setting for gatherings and roller skating for the rest of the year.

5. Triple XXX Family Restaurant

Featured on the Food Network show, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Indiana’s first and oldest drive-in restaurant awaits in Chauncey Village in West Lafayette.

Triple XXX Family Restaurant has been found here, posted on the State Street slope, a stone’s throw from the Purdue campus, since 1929.

The restaurant’s name comes from the Triple XXX Root Beer brand, which, in the 1920s, operated almost 100 “Thirst Stations”, roadside establishments around the United States-Canada border.

Whatever food you order, be it a signature burger (100% sirloin) or a comforting breakfast special (anytime), you’re almost obliged to pair it with a frosty mug of Triple XXX Root Beer, made with pure cane sugar to an original 1895 recipe.

6. Elliott Hall of Music

One building that demands you attention on the Purdue campus is this vast auditorium. Built in the late 1930s, the Elliott Hall of Music was designed in the Art Deco style by J. André Fouilhoux, who was one of the architects involved in New York’s Radio City Music Hall.

This is one of the largest proscenium theaters in the world, able to seat 6,005 people. The Elliott Hall of Music is the stage for commencement exercises, and is the base for a variety of organizations including the Purdue All-American Marching Band, Purdue Bands and Orchestras, the WBAA radio studio and a production company for the Purdue campus.

Throughout the year, this venue hosts world-renowned ballet companies, big-time concerts, full-scale Broadway shows and talks and debates by renowned figures.

A few of the many artists to have graced this stage are Bob Dylan, Lady Gaga and Bruce Springsteen.

7. Ross-Ade Stadium

At the north end of the Purdue campus is the university’s historic football stadium, full of character and clad with signature red brick.

The Ross-Ade Stadium was inaugurated in 1924, at a time when the Boilermakers were a real force (9 of their 12 conference titles took place before 1950).

Traditionally known as a “Cradle of Quarterbacks”, Purdue is now a “Den of Defensive Ends”, with nine selected in the NFL draft since 1999. With few changes since the 1960s, the Ross-Ade Stadium is a one-of-a-kind place to watch a football game.

There’s a capacity of 57,236 and one new addition is permanent lighting, enabling night games. For tailgating and a classic college football atmosphere you can’t go wrong, with abundant concessions and beer on tap, which is unusual for college athletics.

8. Mackey Arena

Another campus landmark right next door to the Ross-Ade Stadium is the Mackey Arena, home court for Purdue’s highly competitive men’s and women’s basketball teams.

The women’s team won the NCAA National Championship in 1999 and has reached the Final Four three times. The men’s team are also regular contenders, recently making the Sweet Sixteen in three consecutive seasons from 2017 to 2019.

More than 30 Boilermakers have made it to the NBA. The arena, seating 14,804, dates back to 1967 and is known for its raucous atmosphere, created partly by its domed aluminum roof.

Between 2007 and 2012 the complex was the subject of a huge modernization project, including a state-of-the-art sports medicine facility.

9. Fort Ouiatenon

The first European settlement in what is now Indiana sits within West Lafayette’s boundaries, at a spot by the Wabash River. Fort Ouiatenon was a log blockhouse enclosed by a palisade, serving as a French fur trading post from 1717.

Come the mid-18th century the fort was the linchpin for a large settlement, ceded to the British in 1760 and then used by Native American tribes until its destruction by American Militia in the Northwest Indian War (1785-1795).

The site was rediscovered in 1960, and there’s a replica blockhouse from 1930 that opens to the public during the summer.

Fort Ouiatenon comes alive in October during the weekend-long Feast of the Hunters’ Moon, a festival recalling the annual gathering of French and Native Americans which happened at this very place in the mid-18th century.

On an amazing scale, you’ll find military maneuvers, contemporaneous food and music and dance, and a small world of living history.

10. Wabash Heritage Trail

A fine way to see more of the Wabash River and Burnett’s Creek around West Lafayette is to follow this 18-mile scenic trail, beginning in the north at Tippecanoe Battlefield and ending southwest of West Lafayette at Fort Ouiatenon.

You can get onto the The Wabash Heritage Trail at Tapawingo Park, embarking on a little adventure that will take you through stands of buckeye, sycamore and cottonwood, as well as marshy areas.

There’s a great deal of history to uncover as you go, from the Davis Ferry pedestrian bridge, literally named for a ferry crossing at this site in 1823, to the trailhead, where the Battle of Tippecanoe (1811) was fought between American forces and a confederacy of Native American tribes under Tenskwatawa.

11. Harry’s Chocolate Shop

A West Lafayette mainstay since 1919, Harry’s Chocolate Shop is right by the Purdue Campus in the Chauncey Village District.

This is a lively pub, favored by students and serving hunger-stomping bar fare, so the name is a little misleading. That harks back to an ice cream parlor and soda fountain, founded here more than a century ago.

After Prohibition, the owner decided he needed something to help him differentiate from a competitor, so beer replaced ice cream.

Harry’s Chocolate Shop is a place that sparks a lot of nostalgia for many Purdue alumni, serving beer-friendly small bites (wings, nachos, onion rings, egg rolls, quesadillas), as well as subs, burgers, wraps, pizza, soups & salads and more.

One fun touch is the free popcorn that comes with your drink.

12. Celery Bog Nature Area

Behind the Purdue Campus are close to 200 acres of nature, almost half of which is an important wetland site.

The Celery Bog Nature Area is a magnet for birdlife, particularly during the spring and fall migration seasons, and some 260 species have been recorded here.

Conveniently there’s a 1.5-mile unpaved footpath by the wetlands, ideal for birding and complete with interpretive signs and two viewing decks.

In addition to the unpaved trail, you’ve also got a further 4.3 miles of paved footpath along the Cattail Trail.

This trail is 11 miles long and can be joined at the Purdue campus, leading you past savanna and restored prairie on its way through the Celery Bog Nature Area.

13. Lilly Nature Center

If you’d like to know more about the habitats at the Celery Bog Nature Area, make sure to stop by the Lilly Nature Center, open Wednesday to Saturday.

This modern attraction has fascinating, neatly presented and interactive exhibits about the wetlands, prairie, savanna and woodland on the center’s doorstep.

The center is a handy resource to help you identify animal species, and also has its own bird viewing area.

This is also a venue for all kinds of nature-oriented programs, organized by the likes of the Sycamore Audubon Society and the Indiana Native Plant & Wildflower Society.

14. Happy Hollow Park

On the Wabash Heritage Trail, Happy Hollow Park is close to the Wabash riverbank, about a mile upstream from Wabash Landing.

What you’ll find is more than 80 acres dominated by hardwood forest, offering blissful shade in summer, with a series of side-trails leading off into different corners of the park.

Among the park’s amenities there’s a massive open turf area, five shelters and two accessible playgrounds, for children aged 2-5 and 5-12.

These playgrounds are enormous and had recently been fitted with brand new equipment at the time of writing.

15. West Lafayette Farmers’ Market

May to October, Cumberland Park in West Lafayette is the setting for a popular farmers’ market. Held on Wednesdays, 3:30pm to 7pm, the West Lafayette Farmers’ Market usually has more than 50 vendors.

On a normal visit you can expect to find all kinds of fruit and vegetables as they come into season, as well as herbs, pastured beef and chicken, wine, honey, bread, pastries, Bundt cakes, syrups, handmade candy, crafts, candles, pet treats, aromatherapy soaps, clothing and much more than we can list here.

There’s also plenty of food made on the spot, if you’re up for crepes, comforting vegetarian fare, tacos or shaved ice.

Why You Should Visit Lafayette Indiana

The Midwestern cities of West Lafayette and Lafayette Indiana are home to Purdue University, but they also have much more to offer than a college experience.

Have you ever seen a place so often you have no idea what it looks like? It’s somewhere you’ve lived or visited multiple times. It’s such a part of your history that there’s no mystery. It’s a name, a mile marker, a memory.

For me, one of those places is Lafayette/West Lafayette, Indiana. I’ve visited those two-for-one cities  my entire life, but I’d never actually been there. 

My great-grandmother worked at Purdue, and I remember visiting her home across from the greenhouses, entering the front room with the kit-kat clock and its swinging tail and tick-tock eyes.

My grandparents lived on the corner of a dead-end street with a tiny playground, and my brother and I jumped off swings as they hit their apex, and climbed trees, and looked through my grandfather’s telescope, and played the pinball machine in the basement. 

Dad exhibited in the Round the Fountain Art Fair, and I bought my first piece of art from one of his fellow exhibitors when I was twelve.

My grandparents are gone and my dad stopped exhibiting at art fairs decades ago, but I still visit the home of Purdue, only now it’s with my husband to see my sister- and brother-in-law and nephews.

Our visits, though, are still centered around family. That means that, while I have warm memories, I had no idea how much this area has to offer.

With Purdue University at its core, there’s education, of course, and there’s also history, art, culture, delicious food and drink, and a vital sense of community. 

My husband and I finally explored this place that was both familiar and alien to us, truly feeling like “Local Tourists.”

Since 2018, I’ve also partnered with a 400-level travel writing class at Purdue University, so I’m including suggestions from several students’ submissions.

My exploration was hosted by the home of Purdue, but all opinions, as always, are my own and not influenced in the slightest by art, history, wine, or ooey-gooey cheese on crave-worthy pizza.

Things To Do in Lafayette Indiana

Where is lafayette – west lafayette, and why are there two.

If you’ve driven I-65 between Chicago and Indianapolis, you’ve driven through Lafayette. The seat of Tippecanoe County is located 63 miles northwest of the state capital and 105 miles southeast of the Windy City, making it one of the closest road trips from Chicago .

West Lafayette and Lafayette are not just separated by a geographic designator; they’re actually two separate municipalities.

On the east side of the Wabash River is Lafayette. It began as a fort, which became a trading post, and was platted and named in 1825 for General Lafayette, a French officer who fought in the American Revolution and actually turned down a dictatorship in his homeland.

West Lafayette was originally Chauncey, Oakwood, and Kingston, three smaller communities that merged in 1888. They wanted to be part of their big brother to the east because they needed help with their infrastructure, but Lafayette said no.

(I’ve always wondered why people would be adamant about which Lafayette they lived in. Now I know.)

To be even more confusing, downtown Lafayette spans both towns. On the west is the Chauncey Village District, on the east is the Arts & Market District, and in between, the Wabash Riverfront District. All three can be reached by the John Myers Pedestrian Bridge.

While they may technically be two different towns, they work closely together, and any visit to Tippecanoe County should include both.

The Home of Purdue

Any introduction to West Lafayette should begin, naturally, at Purdue University.

Founded in 1869, when West Lafayette was still Chauncey, Purdue University focused on agriculture, the mechanic arts, and military leadership. It was named for John Purdue, a local merchant banker who donated $150,000 to found the university.

His largesse was combined with $50,000 from Tippecanoe County, 100 acres donated by local residents, and revenues from the sale of public lands. Classes began five years later in 1874. 

Ever since that beginning, the house that John built has been known for excellence, and it’s especially known as the “cradle of astronauts.” Our quick tour took us past Wetherill Chemistry Building, where two Nobel Laureates have taught.

Inside the Wilmeth Active Learning Center, we learned how the university is advancing education by providing opportunities for hands-on experience. A stop at the Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering gave us a glimpse of the Apollo 1 replica inside and his moon-walk footprints outside.

Each building has a story, and while tours are geared towards prospective students, anyone can register.

Wildcat Creek Winery

Less than a mile away from I-65 is a farmhouse, but this isn’t just any farmhouse. There’s a winery inside.

In 2007, Rick and Kathy Black turned this 1900-era family home into a thriving family business. Wildcat Creek Winery offers cheeses from nearby Fair Oaks, jewelry and paintings from local artists, and, of course, wine.

The location has helped their success; the proximity to the interstate has meant visitors from all over. Within six months of opening, people from 48 states and twelve countries had tasted their wines.

However, location isn’t everything, or even close to the most important thing, especially when it comes to wine. We popped in for a quick tasting and sampled several of their varietals to see for ourselves the reason for their success.

Their most famous wine is their Steuben, a complex semi-sweet that changes character with each sip. Aunt Minnie’s Cherry Tree is labeled “cherry pie in a glass,” and when it’s accompanied by a piece of chocolate (or even without) it’s simply delightful.

My personal favorite was the Prophet’s Rock Red. One of their dry selections, it’s the only wine they oak, and it had almost a buttery mouthfeel.

The tastings at Wildcat Creek Winery are free. You’ll want to check their calendar for events like chocolate and wine pairings and their annual BBQ, Bluegrass, & Blueberry Festival, both incredibly fun things to do in Lafayette Indiana.

Bruno’s Pizza and Big O’s Sports Room

Imagine a college town without pizza. It’s a darn-near impossible task, isn’t it? College and pizza go together like tomato sauce and oregano. Yet, when Bruno Itin and his wife, Evelyn, moved to West Lafayette in 1955, pizza was nowhere to be found. They promptly fixed that travesty, and Bruno’s has been serving pizza ever since.

It’s been 60+ years since that opening, and to be around that long, you’ve got to be good. We started with an order of Bruno Dough, a plate of fried dough balls served with marinara and cheese sauce.

I refrained from licking the garlic butter and parmesan sprinkles off the plate, but barely. Then we ordered a salad, followed by Bruno’s Meat pizza.

We are still craving this. That ooey-gooey cheese, that veritable butcher’s counter of meat practically bursting out from under, that simple sauce with a light seasoning of garlic, that dough… Orlando, Bruno’s son, told us it’s because he uses brick cheese in addition to the standard mozzarella.

There’s more to it than that, of course. There’s the love of a family business. Bruno passed in 2006, and Evelyn in 2008, but Orlando and his siblings Bruno, Jr., and Tina, and a slew of granddaughters are still going strong.

Haan Mansion Museum of Indiana Art

When you see the Haan Mansion Museum of Indiana Art you’d never guess that it was built to be moved. Originally the State of Connecticut Building in the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, a former Connecticut resident saw the building and fell in love with it, so her husband bought it and shipped it to Lafayette, where it became their home.

In 2015, Bob and Ellie Haan turned the home into a museum, and what a museum it is.

Inside its 15,000 square feet is a large collection of Indiana art (hence the name), featuring several impressionist paintings by T.C. Steele and his Hoosier Group contemporaries. Instead of your standard art museum configuration, these paintings are hung throughout the home as they would be if someone still lived there.

Stepping into the mansion is like stepping back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. There’s a Chickering baby grand in the parlor, a stunning Wooten desk complete with inkwell stain, enormous chandeliers, and furniture that’s simply massive.

Allow more time than you think you’ll need to explore, because everywhere you turn is something fascinating, historic, and beautiful.

Artists’ Own

Located in downtown Lafayette’s Arts & Market District, Artists’ Own is a gallery that’s owned and operated by its member artists. Each one is vetted through a jury system, and one of the biggest considerations for inclusion is the ability to produce consistently high-quality work.

Multiple mediums are represented, including paintings, sculpture, jewelry, photography, furniture, pottery, fiber, glass, drawings, and much more.

They also make sure that the artists have different styles. This concept means that everyone who walks in the door should find something that appeals to his or her tastes. 

Since it’s operated by those artists, when you visit, you’ll have a chance to meet one.

Triple XXX Family Restaurant

When I told my dad we were going to be touring Lafayette, his first question was “Are you going to Triple XXX?” This question was repeated throughout our visit, and why not? It’s the first and oldest drive-in in Indiana. Open since 1929, it used to be called Triple XXX Thirst Station, after its iconic root beer.

In the 1920s, there were nearly a hundred of these roadside thirst quenchers around the US and Canada, but now only two remain: one in Issaguah, WA, and Triple XXX Family Restaurant in West Lafayette.

The distinctive orange-and-black building is almost always hopping, especially on game days at nearby Purdue.

Not only do they have that tasty root beer, they’ve also got burgers good enough for Guy Fieri. The “chop steaks,” as they call them, are made of 100% sirloin that’s ground in-house.

Prophetstown State Park

Prophetstown State Park  is Indiana’s newest. It’s a unique destination, combining a landscape that’s distinctly Indiana with the history of the Native Americans who fought the settlers’ encroachment, and the farmers who eventually tilled the land.

Located at the confluence of the Wabash and Tippecanoe Rivers, there’s prairie, wetlands, and woodland bluffs, all within 2300 acres. Our guide told us that the prairie puts on quite a show in early July, becoming a field of color.

Also within that relatively small space (Purdue’s campus is larger) is The Farm at Prophetstown. This replica of a 1920s homestead shows what a working farm back then was like, with plenty of chickens roaming around the Sears and Roebuck kit house.

Visitors can purchase eggs, meat, and sausage, and campers staying on-site will often replenish their supplies. There’s also a water park with a 30-foot tube slide, body flume, lazy river float area, and more.

Prophetstown gets its name from Tenskwatawa, or “The Prophet”. He was Tecumseh’s brother, and in 1808 the two established a village, and by 1811 had convinced members of more than 14 Native American tribes to join them. The goal was to help halt the wave of settlers that was taking over their homes.

Within the park are replicas of the different types of Native American structures these various tribes may have used. If you look to the west, you can see the obelisk at Tippecanoe Battlefield, commemorating the victory of the Americans over the village.

Tippecanoe Battlefield

On November 7, 1811, Indiana Territory Governor William Henry Harrison and his troops thoroughly routed the warriors from nearby Prophetstown. Tecumseh was away when the soldiers arrived, so Tenskwatawa was in charge.

The Prophet decided that killing Harrison would stave off any battle, so some warriors tried to sneak into the American’s encampment before dawn. Not only were they unsuccessful, but after the resulting battle and the tribes’ retreat, Harrison obliterated their abandoned town, burning it to the ground.

Harrison’s success at removing this threat earned him the nickname “Old Tippecanoe.”

Tippecanoe Battlefield Museum is a National Historic Landmark that commemorates this event near Lafayette Indiana. The site includes the 85-foot marble obelisk in the field where the battle occurred, a nature center, and a museum.

The museum teaches you about the battle itself, including a narrated fiber-optic map, as well as the context of the time.

Browsing through the interpretative center is a lesson in the early U.S. and what happened both before and after the Battle of Tippecanoe.

Arni’s Restaurant

One of the things I’ve learned about Tippecanoe County is that the locals support their family-owned restaurants. Arni’s Restaurant opened in 1965 at Market Square. The original is still going strong, and there are now eighteen locations in Indiana.

It’s more than just the food; it’s the people. Fifteen employees have worked at Arni’s for more than thirty years. In the restaurant industry, that statistic is remarkable. 

How do they keep them? They offer benefits to people who work thirty hours a week, including a 401k program, short term disability, and life insurance. 

Arni’s Restaurant is also a solid member of the community, giving to just about everything. Brad and Kurt Cohen have taken over since their father passed away, and Brad said, “if there’s a reason to say yes,” they do.

“You’ve got to take care of the community,” he said, “and the community will take care of you.

After more than half a century in business with no slow-down in sight, they may just be on to something.

Delphi Opera House

Seven places in Delphi, Indiana, are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, including the Delphi Courthouse Square Historic District, which itself is comprised of scores of buildings with historic or architectural significance.

One of these buildings is the Delphi Opera House , a success story showcasing a community’s commitment to preserving its past and developing its future.

The Delphi Opera House began as a public gathering place when it opened in 1865 as the Assion-Ruffing City Hall. Never a government center, it was instead where the community performed readings, recitals, and theater.

In 1888 it became the Lathrope and Ruffing Opera House, and soon it became known simply as the Delphi Opera House.

Like many other grand theaters, the growth of cinema spelled its doom. In 1914 the Fire Marshall condemned the building as unsafe. Through the efforts of the Delphi Preservation Society, the building was restored, brought up to code, and reopened 101 years after its doors were closed.

Now it’s back in business, with concerts, theater, and special events. The restoration was so skillful that in 2017 the Preservation Society received the Indiana Landmarks Cook Cup for Outstanding Restoration.

Fun fact: When you visit, look for the gorgeous banquette on the landing leading to the theater. It was donated by Bob and Ellie Haan.

Wabash and Erie Canal

What do you do when you want a water-based shipping channel and one doesn’t exist? Why, you build a canal, that’s what. In the early 1800s, settlement of the Indiana territory was booming.

As the population grew, so did the need for goods from back east. The settlers also had stockpiles of their own products they needed to ship. The solution was to build the Wabash-Erie Canal.

At a length of more than 460 miles by the time it was completed, it was the longest canal ever built in North America and effectively provided access from New York all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.

Despite its final completion in 1853, this grand project never quite lived up to the hype. Erosion was a constant issue, but the bigger threat and ultimate cause of its demise was the railroad.

Today parts of the canal are long forgotten and there’s only one section of the canal that even has water, and that’s in Delphi, Indiana.

The Wabash and Erie Canal Interpretive Center contains a world-class, interactive museum that brings the reason for the canal, the struggle to build it, and the impact it had on the communities surrounding it to life.

There’s a living history village on-site, as well as 2 1/2 miles of waterway and towpath. If you’re there during the warmer months, you can take a 35-minute ride on their model canal boat.

This is a truly impressive destination, and amazingly it was built and is run by volunteers. The spirit we found at Delphi Opera House is, it seems, just part of this community.

East End Grill

Exploring West Lafayette and Lafayette Indiana will work up an appetite, and dinner at East End Grill is just what being a Local Tourist ordered. We settled into the “Industrial American Grill” and sighed.

What a visit. How much we’d seen. We were tired enough we didn’t even want to think, so we asked Corey, our server, what to order, and he steered us in the right direction.

House salad topped with cherrywood smoked bacon and a white balsamic vinaigrette on the side. Fall-off-the-bone BBQ baby back ribs, braised for seven hours, then grilled, then glazed with their house-made sauce.

We’d heard about their special fries, so Jim upgraded his side dish to get that truffle oil, parmesan cheese, and garlic aioli. Me? I went with the grilled swordfish topped with chimichurri and served with a side of corn salsa and fingerling potatoes.

Hungry yet? Well, we had to finish that off with an apple cobbler topped with salted caramel ice cream. If we hadn’t been so tired we would have grabbed a seat at the bar and tipped into their craft beer and whiskey list, but it was time to turn in.

Black Blanket Farm Bed & Breakfast

Our home-away-from-home during our visit to West Lafayette and Lafayette was a much-loved home called Black Blanket Farms Bed & Breakfast . It’s the first (and as of now, only) bed and breakfast in Tippecanoe County. 

Built on a foundation that dates back to the 1800s, this family farmhouse has been recently renovated so that it can provide some peace and quiet for weary travelers, Purdue visitors, and Local Tourists.

It’s a labor of love, and there’s so much heart in this place we instantly felt like we were part of owner Teresa Witkoske’s family. Even Tuco, the rescue dog, forgave me when I sat in his chair.

This restful place is only about a ten minute drive from town, a quick and painless distance, especially when you can wake up to the sound of Mother Nature and take a walk along a shallow pond as geese flutter their wings.

Meet Luke the Land Cruiser

Our chariot for our West Lafayette-Lafayette visit was the surprisingly fun-to-drive Toyota Land Cruiser . I say “surprising” because this vehicle is HUGE, with up to three rows of seating, a height of 74 inches, and a weight of nearly 6,000 pounds.

Despite its size, this baby can move . That 5.7 liter V-8 engine with 8-speed transmission turns this beast into a purring, smooth-riding beauty. The moment I put pressure on the accelerator I commented “The force is strong with this one.” Henceforth, he became known as Luke.

Luke the Land Cruiser.

Inside, this luxury Jedi-class SUV is filled with more bells and whistles than the R2-D2 and BB-8 combined. The seats can both heat you up and cool you down. You never have to worry about cold hands with the heated steering wheel. And warm beverages are a thing of the past with the center console cooler.

The supple leather seats can be adjusted ten different ways, ensuring this is one comfortable ride. The front row can be adjusted up, down, back, forward, more lumbar support, less lumbar support – and once you’ve found your optimal configuration, you can save it.

The backseats get their own climate control and DVD entertainment system. (Popcorn optional.) One thing that particularly tickled me was how the steering wheel would pull into the dashboard when you turn off the engine.

Once settled in and ready to hit the road, the radar-controlled cruise control, proximity warning system, and navigation get you there safely. We didn’t have the opportunity to go off-roading, but if we had, Luke would have handled it with the smooth sailing of a hovercraft. The only downside is the MPG – it’s a woeful 15 (if you’re lucky).

All-in-all, the Toyota Land Cruiser is a first-in-class premium SUV with stability, speed, comfort, and rugged good looks. Thanks, Toyota, for letting us borrow Luke for our trip to Lafayette!

The Farm at Prophetstown

Most programs at the Farm are free. This working 100-acre farm is open year-round, seven days a week. Buy beef, pork and eggs during your visit. The diversely talented staff does everything from tending to the animals to demonstrating the player piano to hosting farm-to-table dinners with Chef Lauren.

The Farm at Prophetstown partners with the Department of Natural Resources to create experiences for young and old. “Our goal is to help people live better,” says Leslie Martin Conwell, Farm Executive Director. A $50 membership includes various discounts, and doubles as an Indiana State Park Pass!

Prophetstown State Park

Prophetstown State Park is the realization of a dream of Richard Lieber and the Indiana State Parks system: have a park within one hour of every Indiana citizen. This 2,300-acre glaciated property features prairie, woodland, wetland and river habitat. “We teach people to see the rolling prairie as beautiful,” says Interpretive Naturalist Jenna Parks.

Visit the Native American Village and learn about the way of life of Northern Indiana tribes. Wander the prairies. Five miles of bike trails cross the property. Hike along Trail 3, where the Wabash and Tippecanoe Rivers join. In addition to trails, the park has campgrounds, three picnic shelters and an aquatics center.

In spring, see how fire rejuvenates the prairie. Prescribed burns are vital for prairie management. In only a week-and-a-half to two weeks after a burn, the prairie springs back to life. In summer, fill your senses with prairie grasses and vibrant wildflowers. Every year the park staff grows 20,000 prairie plants, wildflowers and grasses native to the area for propagation.

The property is frequented year-round by birdwatchers. Look for short-eared owls around the fens. Keep an eye out for the resident eagles and sandhill cranes.

Prophetstown State Park sits in the area where, in 1808, “The Prophet” Tenskwatawa and his brother Tecumseh united 14 Native American tribes. The brothers invited these tribes to set aside their disputes to protect their lands in the Northwest Territory. After the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811, “Prophet’s Town” was burned to the ground and the tribes disbursed. The “Circle of Stones” represents 14 known tribes, as well as one stone for unrecorded tribes, who gathered at Prophet's Town.

Tippecanoe Battlefield & Museum

Across the river, visit Tippecanoe Battlefield , a national historic landmark. The peaceful, groomed lawn and mature trees are dotted with markers where soldiers fell in battle. The museum offers a fascinating look into the rich military, political and Native American history of the area. Wander along the Wabash Heritage Trail or the “Trail of Death” adjacent to the battleground.

The Igloo Frozen Custard

The Igloo Frozen Custard is the perfect ending to a day on the prairie. Custard treats, sandwiches, sides and salads appeal to “children” of all ages. The retro decor and fast service by happy employees is relaxing. My truly “tender” tenderloin sandwich, hot onion rings and mint-chocolate custard with sprinkles and real whipped cream made this an "I'll definitely be back" experience!

Amtrak is the only carrier operating train routes to West Lafayette. The train journey from West Lafayette to Chicago takes 4h 54m and costs around $36 for a one-way ticket. When coming by train from Washington, D.C., expect to pay about $92 for a 18h 16m trip.

Another option to get to West Lafayette is to pick up a car rental from Chicago, which is about 172 km from West Lafayette. You’ll find branches of Routes Car & Truck Rentals and Kyte, among others, in Chicago.

Several bus lines operate bus routes to West Lafayette, including Tornado Bus, Amtrak and Greyhound. From Nashville, the bus ride to West Lafayette takes 274 km and will cost you around $275. From Chicago, the ticket costs about $88 for a journey of 290 km.

• Transcripts

The admission committee is looking for transcripts with a GPA of a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent. Prospective PhD students need a transcript that shows completion of a master’s degree. You can upload offical copies directly to the application portal. An official transcript bears the original signature of the registrar and/or the original seal of the issuing institution. If transcripts are not in English, an English translation will need to accompany the transcript.

Due to COVID-19 constraints, the GRE/GMAT is optional. The admissions committee values these tests and highly recommends applicants take and send their scores as part of their application package for a holistic review.

• Recommendation letters  

HTM requires three letters of recommendation: two from academia and one from an employer.

When you create an online application to the Purdue Graduate School, you will be asked to input the names and emails of your recommender. Once you click “Send to Recommender,” your recommendation providers will receive an email with instructions on submitting their recommendation online. The Purdue University Graduate School strongly encourages you to provide an email address affiliated with an academic institution, professional organization or employer. If there is not an affiliated email, please be sure to inform the individual writing your letter that they must be on business letterhead to assure they are valid. Once the online recommendation is submitted the graduate program to which you applied will have access to view your online recommendation.

• Current Resume

HTM’s application review committee is looking for a minimum of one year of work experience in a related area or two completed internships (internships must total six months or more).

Assistantships  that HTM offers are typically determined based on past work experiences and career goals outlined in the resume. Preference will be given to admitted applicants with related work experience that meet the needs of HTM.

• Diversity Essay 

The application portal will ask for a diversity letter. In this document you should describe your leadership; work experience; service experience; or other significant involvement with racial, ethnic, socio-economic or educational communities that have traditionally been underrepresented in higher education. You should then describe how these experiences would promote a diversity of views, experiences and ideas in the pursuit of research, scholarship and creative excellence. You should feel free to discuss your own personal experiences in the essay.

• Statement of Purpose

A statement of approximately 500 words is encouraged that explains your interest in undertaking or continuing graduate study; your reasons for wanting to study at Purdue; and your professional plans, career goals and research interests. You also may explain any special circumstances applicable to your background and elaborate on your special abilities, awards, achievements, scholarly publications and/or professional history.

Indiana, Purdue installing wireless charging for EVs on highway in a first for US

Work will begin soon in Tippecanoe County on the first segment of highway in the U.S. that will wirelessly charge electric vehicles as they travel, a project that could help define the future of EV charging.

The Indiana Department of Transportation is teaming up with Purdue University and Cummins, Inc. to install the technology on a state highway in West Lafayette as part of a pilot project, according to a draft press release obtained by IndyStar.

The first segment of the project will cover about a quarter of a mile along U.S. Highway 52 / U.S. Highway 231 between Lindberg Road and Cumberland Avenue , the release said.

IndyStar has requested more details about the project and is waiting for responses from INDOT and Purdue, which both confirmed an official announcement is planned for later this week.

Indiana's pilot segment comes after multiple years of testing and research. In the future, the goal is to expand the research by electrifying a section of an Indiana interstate. The ability to charge on the go would reduce the need for charging breaks and extend the range of electric vehicles, which currently is one of their major drawbacks.

The ongoing work is aimed at advancing understanding on how to transfer high power across longer stretches of pavement at highway speeds, as well as how to equip EVs to obtain that power as they are on the move. This research has been described as having the potential to define the future of EV charging, according to previous Purdue releases on the topic .

Construction is expected to begin this spring and be completed by next summer. The work will entail removing the existing pavement and installing the coil circuits and electronics, including inverters and transmitters.

When complete, the segment of road will be able to help charge both heavy duty and electric passenger vehicles as they travel at highway speeds, the draft release said.

Future of EVs: 'Good pandemonium' as Indiana races toward plans for a new era of electric vehicles

A similar quarter-mile stretch of EV-charging road was unveiled in Detroit in November . That project is on a downtown surface street whereas Indiana's segment is the first on a public highway.
