Houndmouth’s 1 Night 2 Night 3 Night Tour: Live in New Orleans
Indiana-based blues/rock band Houndmouth performed three shows in an intimate venue in downtown NOLA. Suddenly, I love Houndmouth even more.
Stream: “mckenzie” – houndmouth.
S ince moving to New Orleans a few years back, my absolute favorite part of living here has been the music scene.
This should come as no surprise, as NOLA is known far and wide for its legendary music venues and, of course, for being the home of jazz. Living here has given me access to a wide array of music and entertainment that is entirely new to me, and it has broadened my musical horizons considerably. It has also allowed me to revisit some old favorites if they happen to roll into town (and luckily for me, they often do). When I heard that Houndmouth – an alternative blues/rock band from Indiana – were playing three shows downtown, I knew I had to be there.
Houndmouth set off on their 1 Night 2 Night 3 Night Tour in late September, cruising into venues across America and performing at each for three nights in a row. In early November, they performed at Toulouse Theater in the lively French Quarter in downtown New Orleans (a famous neighborhood renowned for its music, history, food, and culture) and I was lucky enough to be in attendance for their second performance.
The band came out of the gate with their song “Darlin’”, a yearning, emotional anthem from their 2015 album Little Neon Limelight .
Darlin’, darlin’, darlin’ Why don’t you sleep at night? The colder the heart The warmer the gun
“Darlin’” is one of their slower tunes and it was a great choice to start the show as it enabled them to build toward their faster-paced, rock-leaning tracks in their catalog. It is also one of their more recognizable songs, so the crowd was immediately engaged.
Everyone in the intimate venue knew all of the lyrics and loudly sang along, filling the theater with the palpable electricity that only good music can produce. Toulouse Theater was the perfect venue for this show, featuring an entryway equipped with a bar leading into the mezzanine area; an open floor space with yet another bar and a large stage at the far end. The sound filled the room completely, and it was easy to get up close to the stage despite the substantial crowd. The performance I attended was the only time they kicked off their set with “Darlin’” throughout their shows in New Orleans, and I was so glad I happened to choose the second night to see them perform. It was the perfect way to set the tone of their show, and the venue was filled with a sense of camaraderie from the very first notes of the song.
The performance lasted about 90 minutes, featuring an array of tracks from across their studio albums. The crowd enjoyed the concert in typical New Orleans fashion: Dancing, drinking, and enjoying some awesome music. I cannot emphasize enough the sense of community I felt within that theater. Houndmouth truly brought people together, even if just for a short period of time. If I had to make a critique (and I am really nit-picking here), it would be that many of their songs have a very similar sound, making the middle portion of the show a tad monotonous and a bit of a blur. It did not take away from my overall enjoyment of the concert whatsoever, but I do think it is worth mentioning.
There were a few standouts that really caught my attention, including their performances of “McKenzie” and “Miracle Mile” from their 2021 album Good For You and “My Cousin Greg” from Little Neon Limelight . “My Cousin Greg” is a really fun track with funky lyrics, incorporating all of the band members’ voices and instruments in a really interesting and unique way.
Hey Greg Where’d one of your shoes go He looked at me and said That’s not important Please don’t you point Your photon ray gun at me
If anyone’s attention had drifted away, it was drawn immediately back to the stage by this performance.
Perhaps the most exciting moment of the night was the encore, when they performed “Sedona,” their most popular track – and the one that introduced me and many others to Houndmouth, serving as a gateway to their catalog. Folk, blues, and rock n’ roll come together to create a song that is impossible not to enjoy, which was reflected by the crowd’s extremely positive response. When the recognizable riff that threads throughout the track began to play, everyone in the theater whooped and cheered. At this moment, Houndmouth had the crowd in the palm of their hand. It is safe to say they delivered with their rousing rendition of a fan favorite, bringing the audience together for their final tune of the night. When they reached the bridge, the crowd nearly drowned them out as we all chanted along to the lyrics:
“Hey there Sedona let me cut you a deal I’m a little hung over and I may have to steal your soul”
“Sedona ” was an incredibly satisfying way to end the show, leaving everyone in the audience with that post-concert high that truly reminds us music-lovers of our reason for living. While this may sound a touch dramatic, anyone who has ever fallen in love with live music knows exactly what I mean.
HOUNDMOUTH RETURN TO THEIR ROOTS WITH RICH, RUSTIC STORYTELLING ON NEW ALBUM ‘GOOD FOR YOU’
I can say with full confidence that houndmouth’s performance exceeded my expectations..
I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to see them perform in such a humble venue in a city steeped in musical history. New Orleans has an extremely high bar for musical performances, and Houndmouth met it with ease. All the vocals, harmonies, and instrumentals sounded exactly like their studio versions except, imbued with the energy of the band and the crowd, they were infinitely better. I walked out of Toulouse Theater wishing I had attended all three of their performances in New Orleans, but I guess I’ll have to wait until they come ’round again.

I've never seen Houndmouth live before but I started listening to their last album a few years ago and was hooked on their vibe. Super mellow, super chill, filled with mini-jam sessions, love all their songs. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they all share vocals on a lot of their songs. This is a multi-talented band and I'm so glad I got to see them! :)

Great show! I live in Fishers and have been attending concerts at Nickel Plate since the beginning. The renovations are awesome. The sound quality and stage set up are much improved. Houndmouth is very talented, with a unique & diverse sound. They are very good live and bring a lot of energy to their set.
Very good show at a wonderful venue. Not a bad seat in the house and we arrived about 10 minutes before the opener started! Service was great as well! Would highly recommend seeing Houndmouth live in concert. The addition of the saxophones provided a very jazzy touch.

Honestly, always a great time🫶🏻.
This weekend was my fourth and fifth time seeing Houndmouth this year and I really really loved the Atlantis shows. I love the intimate venues for this, especially because I feel like you just get so much more energy and the vibe is just always amazing!! I can’t wait for next time and Carly Johnson literally killed it this weekend too
Good show in a small venue
This is my third time seeing Houndmouth in a year. I saw them last October as an opener for Greta Van Fleet in an arena. They were fantastic! The crowd really responded. Then in May, I saw them in a small 1,000 person venue. They played the crowd well and the sound was good. This time was a very small 450 person venue. I was super close to them. They sound was ok. It was cool that they talked to the crowd between songs. The crowd was talking amongst themselves a lot during the show almost as if Houndmouth was background music making it difficult to hear and enjoy at times. Houndmouth is very fun to see. We met their drummer (not the original one) after the show. He gave my daughter a drumstick which she loved as she is a drummer.
Saw them at the orange peel, the rocked the roof off that place! Great band and great venue. Highly recommend!
this show rocked
Houndmouth nailed headlining this show and it was everything you would want from a rock band vibe and more--sound was on point and the crowd was into it!
Had been waiting to see these guys for a long time and they did not disappoint!
Cool venue. Incredible music.
Houndmouth at the State Theater was amazing. We’re so glad we got to be there for this gig. The band is beyond talented and the venue was perfect. Highly recommend!
Fun show! Great venue.
The band brought the energy for this show. I was genuinely so surprised how much fun it looked like they were having. Music and live performance was so great! They were excited to sell out such a big show.
Houndmouth was absolutely amazing!! The State Theatre was a fantastic venue, great sound, and the atmosphere was electric! Houndmouth and the crowd were magical, once in a lifetime vibes!

Review – Houndmouth Let The Music (and Buffalo Nichols) Take Center Stage
Snow still lined the sidewalk as fans shivered outside the Gothic Theater, waiting either for their friends to catch up to them or for security staff to check for the proof of vaccination required for entry. Though Colorado was treating locals to a frosty day—the evening barely held out at 10 degrees as fans hurried to the venue—once inside, they quickly forgot the bitter chill, pulling off winter coats and buying beer before beginning the search for the best vantage point to see the night’s main attraction: Houndmouth.
As fans slowly filled into the venue, they also began to infuse the Gothic with a jovial excitement for what was to come. One man called out to the growing crowd, grabbing the entire venue’s attention with a commanding voice, only to remind us all about the fast-approaching Winter Olympics and rallying the venue into a proud cheer in support of the American athletes. But shortly after the raucous cheer, a soft hush fell over the audience as the opener, Buffalo Nichols, took the stage.
Nichols’ started his set off slowly, easing fans into the evening as he enveloped the audience with his effortless guitar picking and bluesy vocals. As fans continued to file in, the solo act moved effortlessly through his set, pausing between songs to address the crowd. Though a bit soft-spoken, Nichols looked at home as he stood center stage, thanking the audience for attending the show, briefly bemoaning the cold before earning a chuckle from the crowd with an unexpected fart joke.
With fans still filling into the venue, Nichols’ commanded the attention of the venue, drawing the audience in and making everyone feel like they were part of a special secret as he briefly introduced songs before letting the music do the talking. While Nichols started the evening slowly, each song seemed to add a new layer to the evening—but the solo artist kept the audience captivated in anticipation, seeming to intuitively know that the Gothic wasn’t quite ready for his real showstopper. When the right moment in the evening arrived, Nichols impressed fans with his guitar-playing prowess while still making the whole affair look effortless.
By the end of his set, Nichols had fully won the crowd over. And while many in attendance may not have known his music when they walked into the venue, they tried damn hard to learn the lyrics in the moment just so they could sing along. With the energy of the night at an all-time high, it seemed that Buffalo Nichols would be a tough act for Houndmouth to follow. But fans weren’t worried .
After a brief intermission for the set change, the lights in the venue dimmed as “Werewolves of London” played over the loudspeaker. Fans howled in excitement as Houndmouth quietly took the stage and found their places, before opening their set with a rock ‘n’ roll infused performance of “Las Vegas.”
As Houndmouth raced through their setlist, couples found space in the aisles or in the crowd to embrace and dance with one another. The band’s performance added extra layers to their songs, making them feel fuller. The audience responded with the refined enthusiasm of an indie crowd, bobbing heads along to the beat before occasionally throwing a hand into the air as they sang their favorite verses.
In stark contrast to their conversational opener, Houndmouth waited until midway through their set to address the crowd for the first time. Thanking the audience for making it to the show, they informed fans that vocalist Matt Meyer’s parents were in attendance, pointing them out in the balcony level and encouraging the crowd to treat Meyer’s mom to a drink. After excitedly proclaiming that they had the best job in the world, the indie band dove back into the setlist.
Without pausing for conversation, Houndmouth electrified fans with songs from throughout their discography. Fans bounced along with the beat of “Miracle Mile” and sang their hearts out to “Good For You” and “Black Gold.” When the set finally came to a close, Houndmouth delighted fans with a booming performance of “Darlin'” before ducking off stage.
Houndmouth reappeared for an encore, with Meyer taking the stage alone for a Bob Dylan-esque performance of “For No One,” before launching into “Ohio.” The rest of the band found their way onto the stage and joined in playing “Ohio,” then closed out the evening with a raucous performance of the band’s 2015 hit “Sedona.”
