Valley of a Thousand Hills

Inland from the popular resort area of Umhlanga Rocks lies the Valley of 1,000 Hills , a beautiful region of gently rounded hills sprinkled with scenic viewpoints, Zulu homesteads, and gorges. The hills rise up along the banks of the Umgeni River as it flows into the Indian Ocean from the distant Drakensberg mountains. The old road between Durban and Pietermaritzburg runs along the southern edge of the valley, an area with magnificent views.

After passing Hillcrest and Botha's Hill, it comes to Phe-Zulu, a typical Zulu village where visitors can see traditional dance performances and witness the rituals of witch doctors.

PheZulu Safari Park has an abundance of animals that can be spotted, and a Crocodile and Snake park where visitors can go on a tour by knowledgeable guides. The park also offers accommodations.

Umhlanga Rocks

Umhlanga Rocks (pronounced Umshlanga), 16 kilometers north of Durban, is a popular, upscale resort town. Long golden beaches, interrupted by rocky coast, stretch for 200 kilometers north of Durban to the beautiful Isimangaliso Wetland Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site , containing eight interlinking ecosystems; three major lake systems; and Africa's largest estuarine system, Lake St. Lucia .

In Umhlanga Rocks, water sports enthusiasts will find plenty of things to do. Surfing, deep-sea fishing, whale watching, dolphin viewing, scuba diving, and kiteboarding are some of the aquatic pursuits on offer.

Shopping is also a favorite pastime. The Gateway Theatre of Shopping here is one of the largest in the southern hemisphere. Other attractions in the region include championship golf courses, the KZN Sharks Board, nature reserves, and museums, including the former dwelling of Mahatma Gandhi.

Kwamuhle Museum

At Kwamuhle Museum, find exhibits on life in and around Durban during and leading up to apartheid. Exhibits include photographs of township life and exhibits on contributions made by people responsible for the development of the city.

In the museum's courtyard, The Shadows of the Past sculpture , created by Durban-born artist Ledelle Moe, features three naked migrant workers representing their vulnerability.

The museum is housed in a former Native Affairs Department building, an infamous place responsible for enforcing the apartheid legislation. Today, it's a place of hope, where people who fought against injustice are honored, and diversity is celebrated.

A beautiful old building on Florida Road

Known for well-preserved 100-year-old Edwardian structures, Florida Road, stretching from Sandile Thusi Road to Innes Road, is a happening attraction in Durban. Lined with cafes, boutique stores, galleries, and eateries , the street comes alive after the sun sets with locals and tourists who come to eat, shop, and enjoy Durban's endless summer.

Art lovers can enjoy the African Art Centre, Elizabeth Gordon Gallery, and the Artisan Contemporary Gallery.

This is the best place in the city to taste " Bunny Chow ," a staple Indian-Durban dish made with a loaf of bread hollowed out and filled with savory curry.

Perfect wave at New Pier Beach

New Pier Beach, also known as Dairy Beach, is on Durban's Golden Mile and is a top surf spot in the city thanks to a consistent beach break. Surf conditions are best when there is a southwesterly wind, as it creates an optimal eastern swell angle. The wave can be ridden right and left. Low tide is when to ride, as this is when conditions are best; however, this break can get crowded in summer.

If you want to just chill out, this golden stretch of sand in front of the Durban Beach Restaurants is a good place to plop down a chair or towel and just sunbathe or chat with friends. When in the water here, keep an eye out for jellyfish.

Houses overlooking Inanda Dam

About 20 minutes northwest of Durban is Inanda township, which has a rich historical legacy. This is where Mahatma Gandhi came up with his passive-resistance philosophy while visiting in 1904. Inanda is also where the president of the African National Congress, Dr. John Dube, was born in 1871 and where Nelson Mandela cast his vote in South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994.

To learn more, follow the Inanda Heritage Route through the Inanda Valley, which includes the township. The driving route will take you to the Phoenix Settlement, where Gandhi once lived and where his printing press still resides. It will also take you to one of South Africa's oldest girls schools , the Inanda Seminary, which was founded by American missionaries in 1869. You'll also visit Dube's house , which is now a national monument, and his grave at the Ohlange Institute.

White rhinos in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park

South Africa's oldest game reserve , Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (formerly Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve), is about a two-hour drive from Durban. It can be visited on an organized day trip from Durban, or you can drive yourself. Tours arrange for transportation from the city and offer optional afternoon excursions, including an estuary boat trip, a stop at a wild cat sanctuary, or a visit to Dumazulu Cultural Village.

Established in 1895, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is one of the only places in KwaZulu-Natal where you have a shot of seeing all the Big Fiv e (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo). The park is also known for its rhino conservation, and both black and white rhino can be observed here. Other animals that call this 96,000-hectare reserve home are wild dog, cheetah, hyena, blue wildebeest, giraffe, and zebra. There are also 300-plus species of birds.

In terms of seeing wildlife, the best months to visit are May through October , which see less rain and allow for less green coverage that can hide animals. That said, during the winter wet season, you'll have baby animals to spot, as well as lush environs.

Blooming flowers along the Midlands Meander

The Midlands Meander is a driving route that starts just an hour's drive from Durban outside Pietermaritzburg. If you have a car, it is a fun day trip from the city. The route takes you through a scenic valley and covers about 80 kilometers.

Besides being a pretty drive, with a green- and gold-hued landscape and a Drakensberg mountain backdrop, the route is known for its stops in small towns with serious handicraft scenes . From weaving to pottery to painting, wood crafts to leather goods and even fresh-made cheese, the route has more than a 150 places to eat and shop along the way.

Activities are also plentiful in this area, and you'll find everything from horseback riding to skydiving and white water rafting experiences. Midmar Dam is a popular place for locals to picnic or barbecue on weekends.

An important industrial center and port, the city owes its cosmopolitan air to its rich ethnic diversity forged from a turbulent history. Clashes between the British traders, who settled here in 1823; the Zulus, on whose tribal land Durban lies; and the Boers, played a part in shaping Durban's character. Contract laborers who hailed from India in 1860 to work on the sugar plantations remained after their contracts expired, making Durban the largest population of Indians in South Africa.

Mahatma Gandhi, who went to South Africa as a lawyer, developed his political views alongside Dr. John Dube, the first president of ANC (African National Congress) in Inanda Valley, 20 minutes north of Durban. It was here that Nelson Mandela cast his first vote in a democratic South Africa in 1994.

15 Best things to do in Durban

My travels in South Africa span more than a decade. I’m therefore extremely well placed to highlight all that’s great and good about South African destinations including Durban from the viewpoint of visitors like you.

When it comes to location, Durban has it made. Firmly positioned on South Africa’s east coast, this port city developed around a string of long and attractive sand beaches lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

The region around Durban has been inhabited for at least 100,000 years. It only reached the attention of Europeans in 1497, when Portuguese golden age explorer Vasco da Gama sighted it on his way to India. It then passed through multiple hands until annexed by Britain in 1844.

Today, Durban is South Africa’s third-largest city. Alongside its beaches, it contains a blend of natural and manmade sights which range from exquisite cuisine to fascinating museums. Come for the sun, sea, and sand, but stay for the culture.

To provide you with a little helping hand, here are my pick of the 15 best things to do in Durban.

1. The Golden Mile

On the Golden Mile in Durban

Durban isn’t the getaway of choice for South Africans for nothing. You won’t need much convincing that the city’s Golden Mile is the best place to head. It stretches out from the Central Business District (CBD) to form several beaches backed by an attractive promenade filled with cafes and restaurants.

Like most of the Golden Mile’s beaches, South Beach is watched over by lifeguards most of the year. It’s also protected by shark nets. Its slightly calmer atmosphere makes it a good choice for families looking to enjoy the sand or water temperatures of 22°C. Neighboring North Beach is best known for its waves, which attract surfers and bodyboarders from right around the world.

2. uShaka Marine World

Loggerhead turtle in uShaka Marine World

When it’s time for a change from the sands of the Golden Mile, head to uShaka Marine World. Although primarily known as a water park, most agree that its slides don’t come anywhere near comparison with its aquaria, which total 4.6 million gallons and contain 10,000 distinct species of sea creature.

Putting rivals to shame, the aquaria at uShaka Marine World incorporate the largest single tank in the southern hemisphere. Its viewing windows run for 500 meters through four different ‘shipwrecks.’ Each offers insight into an alternative marine environment. Species you’re likely to encounter include sharks and manta rays, alongside turtles, seals, and even penguins.

3. Port Natal Maritime Museum

Port Natal Maritime Museum

Just across the bay from uShaka Marine World is the Port Natal Maritime Museum. Maintaining the old name for the city – which was changed in 1835 – the museum has Durban’s elegant harbor as a backdrop. Its exhibitions span hundreds if not thousands of years of seafaring in the region.

The stars of any visit have to be the boats and ships which can be boarded and explored. It’s not just little kids who’ll enjoy pretending to be the captain of the minesweeper SAS Durban or NCS Challenger while discovering the tiny rooms which together made these ships function.

4. Umgeni River Bird Park

Taking a photo of Macaw

Once a water-filled quarry, Umgeni River Bird Park now has tropical flora spanning 3.5 hectares on the opposite bank of the Umgeni River to the city. It provides a home for approximately 800 birds belonging to 200 species, including the only examples of their kind in Africa.

Birds to look out for range from owls and hornbills to vultures and macaws. Many play a part in the daily shows which take place at the outdoor auditorium. Still more can be seen hatching and being raised by the park team, including increasingly rare wattled cranes.

5. The BAT Centre

Nothing to do with flight, the BAT Centre is a community arts project found on Durban’s Victoria Embankment. It consists of a clutch of individual brick buildings containing small independent art galleries, alongside a performance hall, places to grab a bite to eat, and stores selling a mix of traditional and contemporary art from KwaZulu-Natal province.

A not-for-profit center looking to celebrate the artistic heritage of the city, the BAT Centre is without doubt the best place in the city to discover the diversity of arts and crafts on offer.

6. Durban Botanic Gardens

Walking around at Durban Botanic Gardens

Durban Botanic Gardens is the oldest formally laid out botanic gardens in South Africa, with a foundation date of 1849. A mix of local South African plants and exotics from around the world, it boasts specimens from a variety of floral kingdoms.

Among them are orchids, palms, and cycads (ferns). But covering 15 hectares, there’s also a sunken garden established in the English style and displaying a colorful array of flowers, a butterfly habitat garden, and a naturally-fed lake that’s the perfect spot for a picnic on any of Durban’s multitude of sunny days.

7. Mini Town

Mini Town

A knee-high version of the city beyond its perimeter walls, Mini Town is a retro (turning to kitsch but in a good way) attraction close to the beachfront at Snell Parade. Recreating Durban in miniature, Mini Town contains versions of all the city’s main buildings of note.

What makes Mini Town extra special is the attention given to the functioning railway, and its harbor. Complete with its own moving tug and ship, it contains over 200,000 liters of water.

8. KwaMuhle Museum

To my mind, the KwaMuhle Museum is the most important and most interesting of all Durban’s exhibition spaces.

This museum of apartheid, and its forerunner, the ‘Durban system,’ has been sensitively situated in the building once hated by non-white South Africans – the Department of Native Affairs. It was here that the passes which had to be carried by everyone entering the city were issued.

The museum details all this with its collection of documents, photographs, videos and items belonging to ordinary South Africans. Refusing to hide away from the horrors of the apartheid system, KwaMuhle Museum plays a vital role in educating the generations born after the release and election of Nelson Mandela as South Africa’s first black president.

Bunny Chow

One of South Africa’s most ethnically diverse cities, Durban’s population is made up of Zulu people in addition to a significant number with British and Indian descent. Blending their cultures over decades, Durban has a culinary scene unlike any other city in South Africa. And you don’t have to spend big to enjoy it.

The city’s oceanic location means fish is always a good bet, whether it’s deep-fried in the British style or covered in flavorsome spices originating from the Indian subcontinent. For dishes specific to the city, look out for Bunny Chow – a curried mixed vegetable stew traditionally served in a hollowed-out loaf of bread.

10. Moses Mabhida Stadium

Moses Mabhida Stadium

Built for the 2010 FIFA soccer world cup and named after a leading anti-apartheid politician, this stadium in Durban isn’t just for sports fans. As well as hosting soccer, cricket, and rugby union matches, the stadium doubles as a playground for adventure sports lovers.

The arch which spans the 55,000 seater arena incorporates a 550 step ‘adventure walk’ leading to a viewing platform 106 meters above the ground. There’s also a funicular to reach the top for those who don’t fancy the walk. Beyond the views of Durban and the Indian Ocean, the platform provides the perfect spot to watch daredevils fling themselves from the arch on the bungee swing which flings them 220 meters across the pitch.

11. Dick King Statue

Dick King Statue

The Dick King Statue is another remnant of Durban’s past located on Victoria Embankment. A bronze equestrian statue, it honors the actions of Richard Phillip King in raising the alarm over the possibility of the Boer attack on the city in the 1840s.

Riding for 10 days between Durban and Grahamstown, King covered around 125 kilometers a day, whilst so sick some days he couldn’t even ride. Reaching Grahamstown all the same, he was able to mobilize a British force which saved the city from attack and led King to become part of the history of Durban.

12. Durban Natural Science Museum

Durban Natural Science Museum

The grand columned exterior of the Durban Natural Science Museum should be enough to attract most visitors to its doors – part of Durban City Hall. Entering through a wide stone staircase lined with thick red carpeting, the museum’s displays are no less impressive.

Focusing on the living planet, the museum is a treasure-trove of animals stuffed in former years, from birds and mammals to insects and reptiles. Its displays extend as far as ancient Egypt, with the mummy known as Peter Amen, and one of the most complete skeletons of a dodo there is anywhere.

Kings Park Stadium

Know anything about South Africa and you’ll know its people love sports. The city of Durban certainly isn’t any different, making attendance at one of its major sporting events a great way of getting under the skin of the city.

Kings Park Stadium is the home ground of the Sharks rugby union team, with most games in the domestic league taking place during the country’s winter months (June to September). At other times of year, there’s also the chance to catch cricket at Kingsmead Ground, and soccer at Moses Madhiba Stadium.

14. Old Court House Museum

This museum occupies one of the oldest remaining structures in central Durban, with its ironwork veranda and cream-yellow stone windowsills making for an intriguing addition to the surrounding office blocks.

Built in the 1860s, inside visitors will find a collection totaling some 10,000 individual items. Together, they help tell the story of the area and its people through good times and bad. Further interest is provided through the fact that the building was regularly frequented by Mahatma Gandhi while he acted as a lawyer in the city.

15. Phoenix Settlement

Durban’s connections with one of the greatest men of the twentieth century don’t stop with Old Court House Museum. The Phoenix Settlement, a few miles north of the CBD, was bought by Gandhi in 1904. It was here that he began the switch from lawyer to freedom fighter.

The settlement acted as a test bed for a series of ideas, from communal living to the policy of non-violence which would see Gandhi nominated (unsuccessfully) for a Nobel Peace Prize on more than one occasion. The house where Gandhi lived during this time has been fully restored, and can be visited as part of the Inanda Heritage Trail.

The 10 Best Things to Do in Durban, South Africa

tourist attractions in durban

Located on South Africa ’s northeast coast, Durban is the largest city in the KwaZulu-Natal province and a favorite destination for travelers in search of sun, sea and surf. Imbued with an irresistible vacation atmosphere, Durban is known for the idyllic beaches of the Golden Mile, its world-class surf spots and active Indian community. The latter is responsible for the city’s reputation as the curry capital of South Africa, making this a fine destination for foodies as well.

Hit the Beach

Durban is famous for its beaches , both in the city center and the suburbs. Grab a good book and a towel and spend the day working on your tan; or kick things up a notch with an early morning kitesurfing session. uShaka Beach is famous for its sandcastle artists, who create photo-worthy masterpieces for passing tourists. Northern Umdloti Beach is a good bet for families in search of safe swimming; or nature-lovers hoping to catch sight of migrating humpback whales in winter. North Beach is a bodyboarding hotspot. Durban is also convenient for exploring the more secluded beaches of the South Coast.

At almost any time of day or night, you’ll see surfers of all abilities paddling out to backline on Durban’s beaches. This is one of South Africa’s top surf spots - whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned pro. For entry-level waves, head to uShaka Beach and Vetch’s Pier. For the more experienced, the best waves are found north of the Golden Mile at North Beach, Bay of Plenty and Dairy Beach. South of the city center, top surf spots include Ansteys Beach and Cove Rock. Be respectful of other surfers and wait your turn, though - Durban locals are notoriously intolerant of visitors dropping in on their waves.

Learn to Scuba Dive

If you’d rather be under the waves than on them, pay a visit to Calypso Dive & Adventure Centre  on the beachfront. Here, a team of PADI professionals offer try dives at uShaka aquarium or in the ocean as well as full beginner courses. If you’re already certified, continue your education with an Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver or specialty course. Calypso is also known for its tec diving and professional courses. Nearby dive sites include reefs teeming with aquatic life and a number of interesting shipwrecks. The most notable of these is Coopers, a large wreck of unknown origins named after a nearby lighthouse.

Catch a Sharks Game

You can’t spend time in KwaZulu-Natal without seeing the symbol of a shark wearing a black-and-white rugby strip. This is Sharkie, the official mascot of the Sharks rugby union team . Based in Durban, the Sharks represent KwaZulu-Natal in the annual Currie Cup tournament. Their supporters are devoted, and matches are attended by locals from all walks of life. Get tickets to a game at Kings Park Stadium, the Sharks’ home ground, to experience their passion for yourself. Several iconic Springbok players have played for the Sharks either now or in the past, including JP Pietersen, Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira and Patrick Lambie.

Try a Bunny Chow

In the 1800s, British colonialists bought thousands of migrant workers over from India to work on  KwaZulu-Natal’s sugarcane plantations. Many chose to build a home in South Africa, and their descendants still live in Durban today. In fact, the city’s Indian community is so large that Durban is known throughout the country for its curry restaurants . A unique trademark of Indian food in South Africa is the bunny chow, a half loaf of bread that has been hollowed out and filled with curry. You can order bunny chows at countless eateries throughout the city, from top-rated restaurant Mali’s to favorite hole-in-the-wall spot Sunrise Chip n’ Ranch.

Explore the Moses Mabhida Stadium

An icon of the Durban waterfront, Moses Mabhida Stadium is the city’s main venue for athletic and music events. It’s also a thrill-seeker’s paradise offering several adrenalin-fuelled activities - including the Big Rush swing. Mounted 262 feet/80 meters above the ground on the stadium’s graceful arch, the swing is the tallest in the world. You can also climb the arch, admiring magnificent panoramic views of the coast and the city spread out below en route; or you can skip the workout and ride the SkyCar to the top instead. Moses Mabhida also offers stadium tours, either on foot or by Segway.

Indulge in Retail Therapy

Durban is a dream destination for shopaholics , whether you’re looking for authentic craft markets, sprawling malls or upmarket boutiques. Take care of your souvenir shopping at Amphitheatre Flea Market, held every Sunday on the Golden Mile beachfront. Here you’ll find traditional African arts and crafts, ranging from beaded jewelry to wooden sculptures. Of Durban’s many malls, Gateway Theatre of Shopping is probably the most rewarding, with over 400 stores. If your tastes lean more towards boutique art and fashion, plan a day trip to the Valley of a Thousand Hills, an inland region littered with upmarket shopping streets and markets.

Visit uShaka Marine World

Located at the southern end of Durban’s Golden Mile, uShaka Marine World is the city’s top-rated tourist attraction. The vast complex incorporates several different zones, including a reptile house, a rope adventure park and the Village Walk, an open-air shopping and dining destination. The two main attractions, however, are the aquarium and the water park. The former gives you the opportunity to admire South Africa’s diverse marine life up close - including ragged-tooth sharks, African penguins and green turtles. The water park is the ideal choice for a fun family day out, with water slides, splash pools and supertubes.

Have Dinner Overlooking the Bay

Durban is full of excellent restaurants and bars, but if you’re looking for the ultimate romantic date night destination, pick one that overlooks the vast expanse of Durban Bay. Moyo and the Cargo Hold are both sure to impress. Located at the end of uShaka Pier, Moyo offers panoramic views of the glittering nighttime waterfront. Sip craft cocktails while dining on African-inspired cuisine, accompanied by soft music and the sound of the surf crashing against the pier below. Ship-shaped fine dining restaurant the Cargo Hold boasts stunning ocean vistas on one side, and a floor-to-ceiling view into the uShaka shark tank on the other.

Go Swimming With Sharks

For an even closer shark encounter, consider taking a 40-minute drive south of Durban to the tiny coastal town of Umkomaas. Umkomaas is the gateway to Aliwal Shoal, an offshore reef system known as one of the best places in the world to dive with sharks . Several scuba diving centers offer baited shark dives, using chum to attract oceanic blacktip sharks, bull sharks and tiger sharks (in season). Sightings are almost guaranteed, and if you don’t have your scuba license, don’t worry - operators like Aliwal Shoal Scuba offer shark snorkeling and even shark cage diving for those that require a little extra peace of mind.

10 Best Things To Do In The Coastal City Of Durban, South Africa

tourist attractions in durban

  • Destinations
  • South Africa

The typical tourist visiting South Africa has an itinerary that looks something like this: Fly into Johannesburg, head to Kruger for a safari, and then head to Cape Town for some wining and dining. While that’s got the makings of a fantastic trip, it does mean most visitors miss out on Durban, the third-largest city in the country. Often overlooked in favor of Cape Town or Johannesburg, Durban is quite possibly South Africa’s best-kept city secret.

Joburg may be trendy and Cape Town may be glamorous, but Durban is cool. Best known for its beaches and Afro-Indian culture, Durban has plenty to see and do. An hour by plane from Johannesburg and 2 hours from Cape Town, Durban is a great place to visit year-round thanks to its fantastic weather. So, if you are planning a trip to South Africa, make sure to add Durban to your itinerary.

Let’s delve a little deeper into Durban and discover some of the best things to see and do.

The Golden Mile Durban promenade

1. The Golden Mile

Probably the best place to start is the Golden Mile, which takes its name from a series of golden sandy beaches that stretch for 3.7 miles along the edge of the city’s business district. The paved promenade is the perfect place to walk, run, cycle, skateboard, or do a segway tour. The sandy beaches are a massive playground; take a dip in the blue Indian Ocean, stroll along the beach, try your hand at a sandcastle, or relax and work on that tan. This is probably the safest surfing spot in South Africa; hundreds of surfers take to the water here every day and there are shark nets and lifeguards year-round. Even if you’re not a surfer, this is a great place to watch the action.

Too hot for a stroll? Then “take the back seat” in a Zulu rickshaw. A century ago, more than 2,000 of them crowded Durban’s streets and docks. Now, only about 20 registered pullers remain, all wearing beaded headdresses and pulling similarly decorated rides.

The Golden Mile is also home to uShaka Marine World and Moses Mabhida Stadium (more about them below). You can take care of any souvenir shopping at the Amphitheatre Flea Market, held every Sunday at the beachfront.

Entrance of uShaka Marine World

2. uShaka Marine World

At one end of the Golden Mile is The Point, overlooking the mouth of Durban’s harbor. Once infamous for its gangsters and dockside prostitutes, The Point is now home to high-end condos. The main attraction here is uShaka Marine World — a water park, the largest aquarium in the country, and one of the most popular attractions in Durban. The highlight of a uShaka visit is the Ocean Walk experience, when you get to walk across the bottom of the Open Ocean Exhibit and observe all sorts of marine life, including several species of shark, tons of sardines, and rays. You can actually do more than just watch; uShaka also offers several snorkeling and scuba-diving activities. And if you fancy a bite, book a table at The Cargo Hold and you’ll be dining underwater!

Moses Mbhida Stadium rope swing

3. Moses Mabhida Stadium

At the other end of the Golden Mile is the city’s sports complex, dominated by the Moses Mabhida Stadium built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The stadium is now used for a number of events, including concerts, cricket, football, golf practice, motorsports, and rugby games. If there’s no match on, it’s worth climbing the 500 steps, or riding the Sky Car to the top of the arch that stretches over the field, giving you unrivaled 360-degree views out over the coast and the city. Looking for an adrenaline high? Jump into the void 347 feet above the pitch and swing out in a huge 720-foot arc under the iconic arch; this is the world’s highest rope swing. It’s also the only stadium swing in the world and is even open for children under 18 (as long as they weigh over 90 pounds), should you have an adventurous teenager in tow.

Durban Botanic Gardens

4. Durban Botanic Gardens

The oldest surviving botanical gardens in Africa, founded in 1849, the Durban Botanic Gardens provides a captivating insight into the flora of the region. The property also has some captivating smaller gardens, like the breathtaking Orchid House, the award-winning Sensory Garden, the tea garden, and the herbarium. There’s an impressive collection of living fossil plants — pre-dinosaur cycads — known to have existed for more than 250 million years and now at risk of extinction. The gardens are also home to more than 50 species of resident birds. The gardens regularly host musical concerts, exhibitions, and an indigenous plant fair every September. Entry to the gardens is free and paid guided tours are available.

KwaMuhle Museum entrance

5. KwaMuhle Museum

The KwaMuhle Museum documents Durban’s urban growth as well as celebrating the efforts of those who fought to end apartheid. It’s a great place to learn more about the history of the city. The museum is housed in the former Native Affairs Department building, an infamous place responsible for enforcing apartheid legislation. Exhibits include photographs, documents, and video testimonials of township life, black migration, the apartheid years, and the contributions made by people responsible for the city’s development. It is one of four museums in Durban that tells the story of the city’s past. The other three are the Old House Museum, the Port Natal Maritime Museum, and the Old Court House Museum.

Florida Road, one of Durban’s trendiest areas

6. Florida Road

Florida Road used to be an elephant trail to the marsh that is now Durban’s Greyville Racecourse. Known for its well-preserved, 100-year-old Victorian and Edwardian buildings, today, this is one of Durban’s trendiest areas. Lined with cafés, cocktail bars, designer boutique stores, galleries, and eateries, the street comes alive after the sunset with locals and tourists who come to eat, shop, and enjoy Durban’s endless summer. Art lovers can enjoy the African Art Centre , Elizabeth Gordon Gallery , and the Artisan Contemporary Gallery. This is also one of the best places in the city to taste “bunny chow,” a staple Indian-Durban dish made from a loaf of bread that’s hollowed out and filled with curry.

7. Muthi Market

The muthi (traditional Zulu medicine) market in central Durban is an outdoor network of stalls stocked with everything from herbs to animal carcasses. Inyanga (traditional healers) offer lotions, potions, medicines, and other treatments for various ailments. You can purchase “ingredients” like snake skins, crocodile teeth, plants, bird claws, powders, talismans, and more. This tour is definitely not for everyone — the carcasses can be gory and the smells pungent — but it’s an interesting way to learn about Zulu culture and the world of traditional African healing. It’s best to go with a guide, as many vendors are not fluent in English. Street Scene is one tour company that offers visits here.

8. Indian Quarter

Durban has a large Indian community and lots of Indian heritage. It goes without saying that one of the best things to do in Durban is explore its Indian Quarter. Encompassing Victoria Street Market and Juma Masjid Mosque (the largest in the southern hemisphere), Durban’s Indian Quarter is a multicultural mix of sights, sounds, and exotic aromas. Indian, Pakistani, Chinese, and Somali vendors haggle along the narrow pavements, selling spices, saris, incense, intricate handmade jewelry, embroidered fabrics, beaded sandals, and more. Savvy shoppers will get some bargains here and the restaurants boast some of the most authentic Indian cuisine in Durban — make sure to sample the tasty street food.

9. Inanda Township And Heritage Trail

About 20 minutes northwest of Durban is the Inanda Valley, a densely populated semi-rural settlement that played a large role in shaping the history of South Africa. This is where Mahatma Gandhi came up with his passive-resistance philosophy in 1904. It’s also where one of South Africa’s oldest girls’ schools — the Inanda Seminary — was founded by American missionaries in 1869. President of the African National Congress, Dr. John Dube, was born here in 1871 and Nelson Mandela cast his vote here in South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994. If you are not self-driving, join a tour like the one offered by African Angel .

Oyster Box Hotel pool view

10. Umhlanga Rocks

Ten miles north of Durban is Umhlanga Rocks (pronounced Umshlanga), a popular, upscale resort town where water sports enthusiasts will find plenty of things to do. Surfing, deep-sea fishing, whale watching, dolphin viewing, scuba diving, and kiteboarding are just some of the activities on offer.

There are long golden beaches and a terrific promenade for runs and walks. The Umhlanga Pier has been called one of the most beautiful in the world, with “whale bones” forming a ribcage over the walkway, colorful mosaics, grates where you can watch the water underfoot, and a lovely viewing platform at the end. One of the nicest sights in the area, particularly at sunset, is the lighthouse, which you can spot on a walk along the beach or from the terrace at the Oyster Box Hotel — one of South Africa’s best spots for a sundowner. The Oyster Box is also renowned for its curry buffet, where you can choose from at least 11 curries, including the traditional Durban lamb curry and red-hot beef vindaloo, as well as naans and homemade chutneys.

Thanks to safety nets, shark attacks at Durban’s beaches are rare. The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board maintains the nets that protect the city’s beaches and, while you are in Umhlanga, it’s possible to book an early morning boat ride with the crew that maintains them. It’s rare to see a shark around the nets, but for those that really want a Jaws moment in their lives, there are public shark dissections at the Board’s visitor center.

Pro Tip: A useful resource for your Durban travels is to download the Durban Walking Tour – South Africa’s Melting Pot audio tour guide. It allows you to play and pause as you wish and provides a day or two of entertainment for less than $5. The guide includes maps and directions, as well as insider tips and photos. It’s like having an expert guide in your pocket, who’s available 24/7 on your schedule!

21 best things to do in Durban

Delve into durban with our list of top things to do, see and eat in this tropical beachside city – including surfing, theme parks and bunny chows.

tourist attractions in durban

B y the Indian Ocean in the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban is a city primed for tourism — even if its highlights are less well known than those of Cape Town and Johannesburg . This is the home of the bunny chow, arguably South Africa’s most famous dish and part of a strong Indian influence in the city. Durbanites make the most of being by the ocean and having warm weather year-round; they are usually found on the beach, surfing, swimming, SUPing (stand-up paddleboarding) or just playing in the waves. There are historic sites to visit and a burgeoning drinks scene that includes craft gin distilleries and breweries. Before you head off to the nearby Drakensberg mountains or up into Zululand for a safari, make sure you spend a couple of days getting to know this laid-back surfer city.

Bunny chow (Alamy)

1. Try a bunny chow

The bunny chow is possibly the most internationally famous South African dish and it originated in KwaZulu-Natal. The bunny, a hollowed-out loaf of bread, is filled with curry (traditionally mutton, but all kinds of varieties are available). Be warned: this is not a delicate thing to eat — you tear off chunks of the bread and use them to scoop out the curry. It was thought to have been created by Indian migrant workers who needed a transportable lunch to take to the sugarcane fields (Durban is said to be the city with the biggest ethnic Indian population outside of India, due to the large numbers of indentured Indian labourers the British brought over to tend plantations). You can get bunny chows all over Durban , but the Oriental is often recommended. Ask a local for their favourite spot.

Riding the waves in Durban (Alamy)

2. Surf on the Golden Mile

Durban is a big surfing city, with plenty of waves and bath-warm water. You can surf all along the coast, but the Golden Mile is the most accessible, with lots of surf hire and instructor operations along the beachfront; South Beach is great for beginners. If you’ve got experience already, head further north for better waves, where you can just hop off a pier to skip some of the paddling.

Mahatma Gandhi’s former home is now a museum (Getty Images)

3. Visit Gandhi’s former home

Mahatma Gandhi travelled from India to South Africa in 1893 to work as a lawyer for an Indian trader. He didn’t intend to stay, but the unjust treatment of his fellow Indians in South Africa and Gandhi’s desire to do something about it led to him not leaving for more than 20 years — he later said his time in South Africa shaped his philosophies and commitment to passive resistance. His former home in the Phoenix Settlement is now a fascinating museum detailing his life in SA.

uShaka Marine World (Alamy)

4. Explore uShaka Marine World

One of the most popular attractions in Durban, uShaka Marine World can be found on the Golden Mile. The centre has the largest aquarium in the country, the Chimp & Zee rope adventure park, and a Wet ’n’ Wild water park, among other interactive attractions and restaurants — so it’s very easy to spend a full day there. Feed spotted eagle rays, watch penguins, dive with sharks and hold reptiles — and keep any young ones happy with the scavenger hunt.

The Big Rush Big Swing

5. Jump off the top of Moses Mabhida Stadium

The world’s highest swing starts on the roof of the Moses Mabhida Stadium, a host venue for the 2010 World Cup, 80m from the ground. The Big Rush Big Swing drops thrill-seekers in a 220m arc across the stadium. It’s also the only stadium swing in the world and is even open for under-18s (as long as they weigh over 40kg), should you have an adventurous teenager in tow.

Oyster Box

6. Dig into the curry buffet at the Oyster Box

The Oyster Box is one of South Africa’s most well-regarded properties — a grand, luxury hotel situated on the beautiful Umhlanga beachfront. One of the things it’s known for is its curry buffet. The good news is that you don’t need to fork out to stay there to enjoy this feast, although you do need to book. Try out one of at least 11 curries, including the traditional Durban lamb curry, red-hot beef vindaloo and vegetable korma, plus tandoori chicken, naans and homemade chutneys.

7. Spend an evening on Florida Road

Florida Road used to be an elephant path to the marsh (now Greyville Racecourse). Today it’s one of Durban’s trendiest areas, recently smartened up with an injection of development cash. The road is lined with fashion and designer boutiques, coffee shops, ice-cream parlours, art galleries and cocktail bars, many of which are inside the historic Edwardian buildings for which the Morningside area is known. Hungry? There are restaurants for Mexican, Indian, pizza, chicken, falafel, Thai and Italian, plus steakhouses, seafood joints and burger bars.

Dubai’s beachfront (South Africa Tourism)

8. Run along the Golden Mile promenade

The Golden Mile promenade is, as you might imagine, a popular place for a run. Head out solo, or join the Saturday morning parkrun; the North Beach run broke the record for attendance in 2018 with 2,527 runners. Jog past surfers riding the waves, families walking down to the beach, elaborate sand art creations, vendors selling sunglasses, and stalls for ice creams, cold drinks and coffees. Cool off with a splash in the surf after your run.

The Chairman (Alamy)

9. Sip a cocktail at The Chairman

In downtown Durban you’ll find The Chairman: a jazz bar designed by local architects DGIT and a fun place to hang with Durbanites while you enjoy cocktails, whiskies, cigars and bar snacks including pizza and tapas. The building is more like a house, with a hallway, lounge and inner courtyard; furnishings are quirky and eclectic, with soft leather couches, chandeliers, and artworks and taxidermy on the exposed-brick walls. Things to know before you go: it’s open from Thursday to Saturday, with DJs and live music; dress smartly; and there’s a cover charge to get in.

10. SUP with baby hammerheads

The Point Waterfront Canals at the south end of the Golden Mile are a perfect place to try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding. Hire a board from Xpression on the Beach, hop on and explore the canals yourself, or opt for a lesson. The canal water is clear and clean, and you might see parrotfish or other tropical reef species. Keep an eye out for an enclosed section of the canal, where baby hammerhead sharks are kept in a “nursery” before they’re moved to uShaka Marine World.

11. See where Mandela placed his first vote

Not far from Gandhi’s home in the Phoenix Settlement, the Ohlange Institute is where Nelson Mandela placed his vote in South Africa’s first democratic elections of 1994. It was set up by John Dube, founder of the African National Congress (the anti-apartheid party that won the 1994 elections and continues to govern the country). You’ll be kept busy in the museum, which is stacked with photos, and can also visit the the Inanda Heritage Trail — go with a guide to get clued up on what you’re looking at.

12. Kayak around the shore

Want to hit the water? Hire a kayak from Ocean Ventures in front of uShaka Marine World; you can choose to head out alone or book a lesson or tour. Paddle out to Vetch’s Reef, just offshore; the reef used to host plentiful marine wildlife, but is struggling to contend with the city’s sand pumping. Over the shark nets you’ll find Limestone Reef, where a shipwreck from the 1940s has attracted a wealth of fish. You may spot dolphins, and perhaps even a breaching whale in the distance.

13. Sunbathe on Umhlanga Beach

Umhlanga is one of Durban’s more upmarket areas, but the beaches are open to all. Family-friendly Umhlanga Beach, with its famous red and white lighthouse, is just one option along the Umhlanga coastline, all with soft white sand and warm Indian Ocean water, connected by the promenade. There are plenty of stalls around for drinks and snacks, so you can easily spend a day on the beach — something Durbanites do a lot. It’s often busy on weekends, so go early to secure a good patch.

Umlazi is a food and drink destination (South Africa Tourism)

14. Eat at Max’s Lifestyle

In one of South Africa’s largest townships, Umlazi, Max’s Lifestyle is a buzzy bar and restaurant that often caters for events due to its large indoor and outdoor premises. Once a small shisa nyama — selling barbecued meat — Max’s has grown into a popular venue for food (grilled meats, traditional African food, international dishes) and drinks for locals and visitors. It’s one of the few establishments in Durban in which you can mingle with a broad range of people from all backgrounds, experiencing the diversity of South Africa. There’s often live music, and on Sunday afternoons there’s a DJ.

15. Sample spirits at Distillery 031

Named after Durban’s dialling code, Distillery 031 is in an industrial-style building and hosts spirit tastings and tours. Their D’Urban Scarlet Gin is the world’s first to be made with coffee cherries (cascara); they also brew vodka, cachaça, rum, absinthe, brandy and liqueurs. Guests get an introduction to distilling as well as a spirit tasting and a tour of the distillery — plus a complimentary cocktail afterwards. Bookings are required.

16. Discover Durban with the locals

BESETDurban is made up of a group of mates who love their city. Every few weeks they organise a fabulous free walking tour and give just 48 hours’ notice — so keep an eye on their social media accounts. The guys know the city and its people like the back of their surfboards; a tour with them is to see the city through a local lens. One example of a walking tour is a promenade jaunt to meet those keeping Durban’s Golden Mile safe — watching lifeguard training, meeting the people running the lifesaving clubs. Other times, you might visit street art sites or lesser known neighbourhoods in Durban. BESET also jog 5km along the promenade every Monday at sunrise; it’s a relaxed group run open to everyone.

17. Run the Comrades Marathon

If you are a keen long-distance runner, the Comrades Marathon will no doubt already be on your radar. The original road ultramarathon, founded in 1921, this is a 90km (56-mile) route between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, alternating direction each year. To Pietermaritzburg is mostly uphill and to Durban is mostly downhill — so pick your strength, but don’t be fooled into thinking downhill is the easy option (your knees will tell you otherwise). This is a key sporting event in South Africa and the locals come out in force to offer their support. If you happen to be in town in June, when the event is usually held, head to the sidelines to cheer on the runners and soak up the good vibes.

18. Walk through a traditional market

The muti (traditional Zulu medicine) market in central Durban is an outdoor network of stalls stocked with everything from herbs to animal carcasses. It’s best to go with a guide who can direct you on etiquette — no photos, for example. Street Scene is one tour company that offers visits there. Although it’s not going to be for everyone — the dead baboon carcasses can be gory, the smells are pungent — it’s an interesting way to learn about Zulu culture.

19. Sip a brew at Robson’s

On the Point Waterfront, Robson’s is the place to head for beer after a morning of surfing, swimming or sightseeing around Durban. The brewery’s owner knows a thing or two about beer, as a former chairman of Craft Beer South Africa. Pop into the warehouse bar or the beer garden for a bottle of the Durban Pale Ale or the Hammer of Thor old ale, or take a tour of the brewery (weekends only).

20. Check out the Umhlanga Pier

The Umhlanga Pier has been noted as one of the most beautiful in the world. It’s lined with “whale bones”, forming a rib cage structure over the walkway, and features mosaics, grates to watch the water underfoot and a viewing platform at the end. As well as being a pretty piece of design work, it’s also functional, having been commissioned to conceal a pipe to drain the stagnant pools of water that had been collecting on the beach. Happily, it’s beside the Umhlanga promenade — making it easy to see during a walk or a morning jog, or on the way to the beach.

21. Visit the Umbilo Shree Ambalavaanar Alayam Temple

Hinduism is an important religion in Durban, with its large Indian population. The original Umbilo Shree Ambalavaanar Alayam Temple, built in 1875, was the first public Hindu temple recorded on the African continent. It was washed away by floods in 1905 and rebuilt at its present-day site in the suburb of Cato Manor, just west of the city centre. It’s a small, ornate temple with carvings of deities such as Shiva and Draupadi, with some elements, such as the wooden doors, that remarkably were recovered from the original temple. And, if you’re around in March, go for the fire walking ceremony. Remember to dress respectfully, covering knees and shoulders when you visit.

Transport and Weather

Summers in Durban are hot and extremely humid with an average temperature of about 25°C (75 F). Winter months don’t differ much and are warm and dry with temperatures averaging about 18°C (63 F).

For detailed 7-day forecasts of the wind, waves and temperatures (perfect for water sport enthusiasts), visit Winguru .

For the regular Joe who just wants a 3-day overview of the weather in Durban visit Accuweather

Transport around Durban

Here are a few options to help you make your way around the sprawling city.

Rickshaws are iconic and have been in Durban since the early 1900s. They are essentially people-drawn carts that transport visitors around the city just like a taxi would, but at a slower pace of course.

Approximately 25 rickshaws remain today, but they are well worth a ride as the rickshaw pullers are incredibly vibrant people famous for their giant characters and over the top costumes.

If you want to have your own transport, you can always rent a car, especially for longer trips or larger groups. Renting a car can also work out as a cheaper alternative to taxis and shuttle services.

To find a car rental in Durban, visit car rental service .

Mini-Bus Taxis

This is the cheapest and most reliable public transportation system in Durban, frequented by locals.

It can be intimidating to use public transport when you don’t know how the system works, so here are a few tips.

  • Never get into an empty taxi.
  • Use the busy routes and try not to travel alone.
  • Ask questions — your taxi driver will have a wealth of knowledge to share about the layout of the land. When travelling somewhere new, ask him/her where it’s best to get off and get on, or where to hop onto the right taxi for your route.
  • Be vigilant. Don't display valuables and keep your bags close.

As the cheapest and most popular form of transportation for locals and tourists alike, mini-bus taxis are often cramped and loud. Short journeys in these are quite bearable as the price tag suits any pocket.

Durban is a city where anyone can feel at home, whether you’re visiting for business or a summer getaway.

Our vision at Vibescout is to provide the most relevant, current and comprehensive information.

If you feel we've missed something amazing or have any suggestions regarding our system, we would love to hear from you! Contact: info (at) vibescout.com

15 Tourist Attractions In Durban – Ultimate Guide

Durban has a lot more to offer in terms of activities to do and places to see than you may think. The capital of the KwaZulu-Natal province is South Africa’s third largest city and one of the country’s most thriving and popular tourist attractions. There are plenty of tourist attractions in Durban ready for you.

It’s a remarkably multicultural city, with a population that includes Zulus (who obviously make up the majority); Indians (who arrived in 1860 to work on the sugar plantations and now make Durban the country’s largest Indian city); British descendants (who arrived in the area in 1823); and Boers, who are direct descendants of the Dutch.

Durban is a terrific spot to visit all year because of the great weather. It’s only one hour flight from Johannesburg and two from Cape Town.

Durban’s rich multi-cultural legacy may be found in the Zulu and Indian marketplaces, as well as culturally significant attractions, beautifully groomed parks along the water, and exquisite Indian-influenced cuisine. See Mrpocu.com list of the top-rated tourist attractions in Durban for more suggestions on where to go.

Durban Botanic Gardens

The Durban Botanic Gardens are Africa’s oldest surviving botanical garden. The gardens were constructed in 1849 for the testing of agricultural products on the slopes of Berea Hill, northwest of the city center. Visitors can now stroll amid the indigenous and exotic subtropical plantings, which include grand historic trees that are over a century old.

Cycads, orchids, bromeliads, and palms are among the principal plant collections, and tourists can also visit the Garden of the Senses. The gardens are home to at least fifty different species of birds, in addition to the rich plant biodiversity.

Victoria Street Market

The Victoria Street Market’s burst of color, noise, and movement is hidden behind the goofy pink and pastel stucco facade. The two-story facility, affectionately known as The Vic, is effectively an indoor flea and farmer’s market, with over 150 vibrant retail and wholesale vendors. Butchers, fishmongers, and fruit and vegetable vendors set up business on the first level, while kitchen utensils, pots, luggage, garments, wholesale products from China, and carved souvenirs stream into the building’s second-floor corridors.

Many merchants selling silken saris and incense, spices from aromatic and colorful barrels, and Indian handicrafts can be found among the crowd… This isn’t your typical South African market food. The market’s vendors and shoppers represent the city’s multicultural tapestry, which includes the world’s largest population of Indians outside of Asia, and The Vic has long been a shopping hub for the Indian community. Bring your negotiating talents to find some one-of-a-kind souvenirs.

Isandlwana Battlefield

The Battle of Isandlwana, which took place on January 22, 1879, was one of the worst military losses in British history. The battle, which took place near the same-named hill in Zululand, occurred early in the Anglo-Zulu war when a British invasion column led by General Lord Chelmsford was ambushed by a 20,000-strong Zulu force, culminating in a humiliating defeat. Stone cairns mark the resting places of troops killed in the war on the Isandlwana Battlefield today. A modest on-site museum and visitors centre displays artefacts, relics, and historical information about the fight, which is especially useful for individuals who are touring the battlefield without a guide.

Himeville was founded in the late 1880s, and the city’s museum is housed in a 1900 structure. In this portion of South Africa, there are exhibits reflecting the area’s agricultural history and rural life.
