Cher has been touring with live shows on and off since the mid-1960s, culminating in her Farewell Tour from 2002 to 2005. She has also performed in Las Vegas, Monte Carlo and on fair and nightclub circuits as part of Sonny & Cher and in many one-off club dates in promotion for her single “Believe.”

Costumery is an important aspect of Cher’s live show and she has largely utilized Bob Mackie in designing various costumes and headdresses for her live tours.

Some of the best sets and lighting of her tour career. Finally broke up the set list of the past 15-years. Tighter and more compact, includes more self-reference and camp (Cher on a pedistal, Cher as a saint), some fresh blood with costumes, wigs and sets.

Cher at the Colosseum – Las Vegas at Caesars Palace (May 2008-2012)

(3 year run)

This show was mostly a recreation of the Farewell Tour in set list (with the exception of “Love is a Battlefield” and “The Beat Goes On”) which involves a good sampling of her hits. The difference is amped up visuals, mostly in costumes and sets. Sold out shows proves this formula is a crowd pleaser. The show has a hologram instead of an opening impersonator, 4 aerialists and 12 dancers. I attended three of these shows, one each year. Read my review of (1) the show, (2) the tourbook and (3) gift store. Here are my pictures from Caesars.

The Farewell Tour – aka The Living Proof Tour, The Never Can Say Goodbye Tour (June 2002 – April 2005)

Amazingly fun filled show that was basically a recreation of the Believe Tour set list with amped up visuals (sound familiar?). Bold entrance from a chandelier. The set list never changed in four years, except to get smaller. I saw this show twice at the MGM in Vegas, five times in Los Angeles (twice at Staples, once in Anaheim, once in San Bernadino where I had all my Cher merchandise stolen by the people sitting behind me, and the final show at the Hollywood Bowl). Show was also remarkable for its many false alarms on absolutely final shows, which included false ends in Canada on Halloween, in Australia and then New Year’s shows in Las Vegas. The tour played 325 shows in total. The final show, after many false ends, was at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on April 30, 2005, which I attended as well as the 8.6.02 show in LA, the 8.7.02 show in Anaheim, 12.2.02 show in LA, 12.13.02 MGM show in Las Vegas, the 8.30.03 show at GlenHELLen amphitheater in California’s Inland Empire (the night I was robbed of all my merchandise) and the 1.2.04 “New Years Eve” show at MGM show in Las Vegas. The show included 8 dancers and some aerial work. Awesome opening show by Cyndi Lauper, even better than her Believe tour set. This concert is available on DVD .

Staff: choreographer-Doriana Sanchez; backup singers-Stacy Campbell, Patti Darcy Jones; musical director-Paul Mirkovich; guitars-David Barry; Costumes-Bob Mackie; Wigs-Renata; Opening acts included Cyndi Lauper (02-03), Dom Irrera (03), KC & The Sunshine Band and the Village People (04-05), Pam Ann (UK), Christophe Mae (France).

Do You Believe? Tour (June 1999 – March 2000)

Cyndi Lauper opened many of these shows as well with an ecclectic show but nothing like the stadium rockfest she launched for Cher’s Farewell Tour. The tour was remarkable in that Cher reintroduced her hits into her act, including songs like “All I Really Want to Do,” the “Gypsys Tramps and Thieves/Half Breed/Dark Lady” medley. One of the last shows where she made her entrance down a grand staircase. The shows were plagued with some cancellations due to throat troubles. The show had 5 dancers. There were 122 shows. I saw the Jones Beach show on 7.5.99 and the Madison Square Garden show on 7.13.99. Read my review on Ape Culture. This concert is available on DVD .

Staff: choreographer-Doriana Sanches; musical director-Pual Mirchovich; Costumes-Bob Mackie; Wigs-Renata; guitar-David Barry; backup singers-Stacy Campbell and Patti Darcy Jones; opening acts included Cyndi Lauper and Wild Orchid, Michael McDonald and Julio Iglesias Jr.

Love Hurts Tour (October 1991-November 1992)

I haven’t seen this tour live. It’s tour dates didn’t come through my town which at the time was St. Louis, Missouri. There were 29 shows mostly in Europe. There were some cancellations due to flare-ups of Epstein-Barr virus diagnosed in late 1992. This was not an elaborate show, including the costumes, some of which were recycled, others included a suite and baby-doll dress. Cher was joined on stage in New York City by Richie Sambora. There were 4 dancers.. Read my review on I Found Some Blog .

Staff: manager-Bill Sammeth; cosumes-Bob Mackie and Maggie Barry; choreographer-Doriana Sanchez; backup singers-Patti Darcy Jones. keyboards and vocals-Paul Mirchovich; opening acts by Thomas Brill, Monique Spartalis, Split & Sonja Kimmons, Be Bop Daddies, Dom Irrera (US)

Heart of Stone Tour (March 1990-1991)

The first Cher concert I ever saw – in St. Louis, Missouri, at the late Checkerdome in June 1,1990. Two of my friends criticized the show for being only one hour and mostly costume changes. I took copious notes but never did a review. This show was typical at the time of having no Cher hits and mostly covers in the set list. Darelene Love and sang backup on the tour. There were 66 shows total with 7 dancers and one Cher impersonator. This concert is available on DVD . It aired on TV as Extravaganza: Live at the Mirage.

Staff: director and set designer-Kenny Ortega; musical director-Gary Scott; costumes-Bob Mackie, Ret Turner, Mike Schmidt; wigs-Renata; keyboards-Paul Mirkovich; guitars-Elijah Blue Allman, backup singers-Darlene Love, Patti Darcy Jones, Edna Wright.

Original setlist “I’m No Angel” – (Gregg Allman cover) “Hold On” – (Eddie Money cover) “We All Sleep Alone” “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” “I Found Someone” “Perfection” – with giant big combs and hair dryers being carried around “Tougher Than The Rest” – (Bruce Springsteen song/in amazing dress and wig and set was an elevated pool hall) “After All” “If I Could Turn Back Time” “Many Rivers to Cross” – (Jimmy Cliff cover) “Fire Down Below” – (Bob Seger cover) “Takin’ It To The Streets” – (Doobie Bros. cover)

Black Rose Tour (1980)

From Wikipedia : “To support the album and to lift sales in 1980, the Black Rose band and Cher did a mini tour called The Black Rose Show performed only in North America. The set list for the show contained: “Never Should’ve Started”, “Julie”, “You Know It”, “Ain’t Got No Money”, a little band introduction, and “Dirty Old Man”. For some dates Black Rose was the opening act for Hall & Oates. The costumes for the show were designed by Bob Mackie. The band performed in Pennsylvania, Central Park, Garden State Arts Center in Holmdel Township and elsewhere.”

Band: guitar-Les Dudek, Ron Ritchotte; drums-Gary Ferguson; keyboards-Mike Finnegan; backup singer-Warren Ham

Some believe this was the partial set list (as posted on the Cher.com message board) “Never Should’ve Started” “Julie” “You Know It” “Ain’t Got No Money” (Bob Seger cover) Band introductions “Dirty Old Man” (sometimes)

Black Rose Hole Fit

Take Me Home Tour / Cher at Caesars (July 1979- August 1982)

This show showed audiences this first icicle-fit and the first hole-fit. The rare Showtime TV special Live in Monte Carlo was a good representation of this show in 1979. Staff: backup singers-Michelle Aller, Warren Ham, Petsye Power; music director-Gary Scott; 5 dancers (and Damita Jo Freeman doing an early version of the Moonwalk); costumes-Bob Mackie, wigs-Renata; sax-Warren Ham; drums-Gary Ferguson; guitar-Ron Ritchotte

The Two the Hardway Tour (July – December 1977)

This is the European tour Cher did with Gregg Allman to support their 1977 duet album. Allegedly, they also broke up in the middle of this tour…for good. Cher scaled down her wardrobe for this tour, wearing jeans, tanks and a cowboy hat. The tour was scheduled for 29 dates but Cher left the tour in December over their marital troubles.

Alleged set list

“Sweet Feelin'” (from 1977 Gregg Allman Band album Playin’ Up a Storm) “Move Me” (with Cher) “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” (with Cher) “This Be a Lesson to Ya” (Gregg Allman song) “Love the One You’re With” (with Cher) “Love Me” (with Cher) “Half-Breed (Acustic Version)” Cher solo (with Greg at the guitar) – Uh, I would have killed to have seen that.

Alternative Alleged Set List:

“Matthew’s Arrival” (from 1977 Gregg Allman Band album Playin’ Up a Storm) “Trouble No More” (from the 1969 The Allman Brothers Band album) “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin” (from the 1970 Allman Brothers Band album Idlewild South) “Queen of Hearts” (from 1973 Gregg Allman solo album Laid Back) “Let This Be a Lesson To Ya” (from 1977 Gregg Allman Band album Playin’ Up a Storm) “Sweet Feeling” (from 1977 Gregg Allman Band album Playin’ Up a Storm) “One More Try” (from 1977 Gregg Allman Band album Playin’ Up a Storm) “Oncoming Traffic” (from 1974 Gregg Allman Live album) “Come and Go Blues” (from 1977 Gregg Allman Band album Playin’ Up a Storm) “Bring It On Back” (from 1977 Gregg Allman Band album Playin’ Up a Storm) “Leave My Blues at Home” (from the 1970 Allman Brothers Band album Idlewild South) “Whipping Post” (from the 1969 The Allman Brothers Band album) “Move Me” (with Cher) “Do What You Gotta Do” (with Cher) “Midnight Rider” (from 1973 Gregg Allman solo album Laid Back)

Also included in some setlists “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” (with Cher) “Love the One You’re With” (with Cher) “Love Me” (with Cher) “Half-Breed” (Acoustic Version) Cher solo (with Allman at the guitar)

Cher: The Farewell Tour

(2003) 92 min. DVD: $24.99. Image Entertainment (avail. from most distributors). Color cover. Volume 18, Issue 6

by S. Graham

November 11, 2003

Rating: 3.5 of 5

If her 2002 tour really was her last--and after being “an evil frickin' diva for 40 frickin' years,” as she puts it, she just might mean it--Cher has definitely left us something to remember her by in this 20-song (and more, thanks to medleys) generous concert in which she wears enough different costumes and wigs to outfit a small (if rather odd) town, surrounds herself with dancers and acrobats galore, shows clips from her old TV series, and even plays all the roles in a mini-version of West Side Story (in one of the disc's plentiful extras). Oh, and she sings too, covering everything from the Sonny & Cher years to her early solo career and her renaissance as a disco diva in hit tunes such as "Bang Bang," "Half-Breed," "If I Could Turn Back Time," and “Believe.” Ultimately, this is a dynamic, sometimes silly, always entertaining show, and as Cher herself notes, Britney and J-Lo have a tough act to follow. Presented in DTS, Dolby Digital 5.1, and stereo, the disc also features three extra songs, a behind-the-scenes documentary and interviews, extra Cher monologues, and more. Highly recommended. Aud: P. ( S. Graham )

Cher reveals on TODAY she's adding 27 more dates to 'farewell' tour

Cher

Cher just doesn't quit. At 67 years young, the singer and Oscar-winning actress has been on the road with her "Dressed to Kill" tour, but she's not close to retiring. In fact, as she revealed exclusively on TODAY Wednesday, she's adding 27 new shows to the current lineup.

"When I'm on that stage, I'm doing my job," she told TODAY's Tamron Hall. "That's my only job, just to take you out of yourself, be part of this huge collective. We all kind of come together as a group. We forget that we're separate."

She's jokingly described this tour as her "farewell farewell" tour, referring to the fact that she already made hay out of retiring with her 2002 to 2005 "Living Proof: The Farewell Tour." And the truth is, she seems to love touring so much it's hard to imagine her ever giving it up entirely.

This time, she's even brought late husband and onetime performing partner Sonny Bono into the mix, showing images of him during the show and even duetting with those photos.

"I thought I could never do that," she said, then added that she was able to do it on this tour because "I knew it was the last time. ... He'll be so excited to be onstage, 'cause he was such a ham."

The truth is, Cher may love to perform, but she's just as happy to be a homebody. "I have this one kind of personality that loves to be with people and talk and whatever and sing and whatever," she said. "And I have this other personality that wants to sit and be quiet, watch old movies. ... I'm very much of an introvert, totally."

Nonetheless, Hall was able to get the self-described shy performer to do something she'd never done before — appear in a selfie!

Cher's album "Closer to the Truth" is in stores now. Her additional tour dates begin in September.

20 Years Later, Bob Mackie Reflects on Designing Cher’s Iconic “Farewell” Tour

By Christian Allaire

20 Years Later Bob Mackie Reflects on Designing Chers Iconic “Farewell” Tour

20 years ago to this day, Cher was busy traveling the world on her iconic “Farewell” tour. At the time, the iconic singer stated it would be her very last live outing—though she did go on to perform live again many times since, notably with 2014’s “Dressed to Kill” tour and even an upcoming Las Vegas residency , too. Still, the 2003 “Farewell” tour was meant to serve as Cher’s splashy goodbye to her fans—and so the singer partnered with her go-to designer, Bob Mackie, on theatrical stage costumes that would ensure she went out with a bang. “We wanted to remind people of the four decades of huge hits she has,” Mackie tells Vogue while reflecting on their collaboration two decades ago.

Of course, Mackie is responsible for many of Cher’s most memorable ensembles over the years. He’s the brainchild behind the glitzy costumes that the star wore on The Sonny and Cher Show , not to mention her unforgettable 1986 Oscars look that came complete with a giant feathered headpiece. For the “Farewell” tour, though, Mackie remembers wanting to design more intentional outfits that reflected each hit song Cher performed on stage. “Since this tour featured her hits up to that point, her costumes have become synonymous with these songs,” says Mackie.

20 Years Later Bob Mackie Reflects on Designing Chers Iconic “Farewell” Tour

One of their most notable looks for the tour was what Cher wore to open the show, while singing a cover of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” by U2. “It’s a white Mongolian lamb-trimmed, crushed taupe velvet hooded coat, [which was] opulently embroidered and beaded with smoky topaz and crystal lochrosens,” says Mackie of the statement coat. “There are root beer, silk chiffon bugle-beaded pants and a vest underneath.” The singer also concluded the opening section of the tour in a red top hat and tails look, which Mackie fondly calls the “Ring-Mistress costume.”

While it’s near impossible for Mackie to pick a favorite costume from the tour—where maximalism shined and the pair never met a sequin they didn’t like—the designer does have a few creations that continue to stick out in his mind. “I love her ‘ Turn Back Time ’ costume, which we call her ‘Swiss cheese’ bodysuit,” says Mackie of the black strappy piece. “It’s her very own classic that she has been wearing since the ’70s: black Spandex and mesh with amethyst, jet, and smoke-colored Swarovski crystals—and her trademark thigh-high boots!” Another highlight for Mackie was the showy ensemble he created for her “Bang Bang” number. “She wears a burgundy-leather revealing costume over a nude body stocking, covered in tribal tattoos,” says Mackie, “and a big feather headdress with over 400 coque feathers!”

Many of these ornate costumes took Mackie many hours, if not weeks, to create. But for Mackie, the lengthy design process never holds him back from allowing his creative imagination run wild. “I never think about how long it takes, you just do it,” says Mackie. “That’s my job. But this [tour] in particular took a very long time.” It was clearly worth the effort: Even today, the tour delivered some of his and Cher’s best stage designs of all time. It’s that pure dedication to creating a jaw-dropping style moment that makes Mackie and Cher a forever dream fashion duo. “Cher continues to fascinate and inspire her fans and audiences,” says Mackie, “and me as well!”

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, the Eagles know their audience. Friday at the first of a two-night stand at a packed United Center, the veterans made no attempt to disguise their old-school methods and untrendy style.

Just days removed from seeing his criminal case against men accused of stealing the band’s lyric sheets dismissed by the court , an unruffled vocalist Don Henley all but explicitly admitted the Eagles are dinosaurs. He highlighted the Eagles’ spartan stage setup, straightforward production and dearth of choreography. Resembling a banker in his vest and button-down shirt, Henley described the collective as “just a bunch of guys with guitars,” before acknowledging it “may be anachronistic, but it works.”

The candid moment revealed a rare self-effacing side of the famously solemn Henley. As the last co-founding member involved with the Eagles, the singer-drummer-guitarist also expressed gratitude for more than five decades of support and instilled the event — part of the band’s farewell tour — with a hint of finality. Cue the standing ovation.

After the brief emotional display, it was back to business. For the Eagles, that meant delivering one instantly recognizable song after another for 120 minutes without added effects or obvious mistakes. Doing so required assigning lead vocals to songs identified with deceased co-founder Glenn Frey to his son, Deacon, and country star Vince Gill, who joined in 2017 and handled every part as if he’d been in the group since day one. And it necessitated a professionalism and seriousness interrupted only by a few scheduled comic-relief spots from singer-guitarist Joe Walsh.

Calculated, and too staid for their own good? Definitely. But the Eagles arrived having put in the hard work, nailing the blended multi-part harmonies crucial to many of the tunes and playing with a technical acumen that valued each note. The quintet operated as the equivalent of a leveling device that finds any imbalances. And the Eagles ensured the crowd could experience it all — the spaciousness, the separation, the small details such as fingers delicately moving on a fretboard or hands gently cradling a shaker — by dialing in a crisp, transparent sound at a venue where acoustics frequently get compromised.

Then there were the songs, textbook examples of country-rock craftsmanship and organic architecture that the Eagles often made appear effortless. The hungover mood of “Tequila Sunrise,” dirt-road escapism of “Already Gone,” funky skedaddle of “Life in the Fast Lane,” melancholic ache of “Desperado.” Songs with identifiable lyrics, easy-going tempos, breezy rise-and-fall vocal patterns and lingering melodies didn’t rouse many in the crowd out of their seats but had them mouthing the words and swaying their heads — just as they would in the car if the Eagles came on the radio.

Never mind that the group’s most recent studio effort (“Long Road Out of Eden,” 2007) stands as the only all-original album the Eagles released since their initial 1980 breakup. Or that the newest song the collective performed on Friday dated to Michael Jordan’s rookie season.

Continuing to inspire strong opinions on both sides of the fence, the Eagles acknowledge what their fans want: nostalgia and classics. Unlike generational peers, they no longer concern themselves with recording half-baked new material in a bid to prove relevance. Credit the Eagles, too, for honesty in branding. Named The Long Goodbye, their current tour plans to stretch through 2025 and seems built to allow for leniency in terms of return visits. This is a band, after all, that realizes the music industry is at heart a business and that people will pay for what they love.

Independent of the fancy awards and commercial achievements that include dibs on two of three biggest-selling albums in American history, the most enduring aspect of the Eagles’ legacy arguably pertains to commerce. The group permanently changed concert economics when in 1994 it became the first artist to charge $100 for a ticket to its reunion tour. (By comparison, the Rolling Stones capped prices at $50. It was a different era.)

Initially derided by experts who believed the amount would lead to backlash and empty seats, the strategy triumphed. Its historical impact continues to resonate. The hefty prices associated with today’s big-name shows — and the escalated importance society places on musicians and their entertainment — connect to that once-controversial decision.

Fast-forward 30 years, and Henley’s and bassist-vocalist Timothy B. Schmit’s hair is grayer but the songs largely remain the same. Ditto Henley’s voice which, aside from losing a bit of altitude in the higher end and evincing a slight nasal quality, exhibited smoothness, control and depth. The goofy charm and rubber-faced expressions of their other longtime and fellow 76-year-old cohort, Walsh, similarly possessed a familiar ring. Even the four auxiliary support musicians, all in their respective roles since at least 2001, contributed to a consistency and dependability that reign as Eagles trademarks.

Other than Henley threatening to crack a smile more than once, the biggest surprise related to Walsh disclosing he spent part of his early childhood in Evanston. With the Eagles, you know what you’re going to get. Though the conservative approach rubbed up against unspoken rock ‘n’ roll rules and lacked liveliness, it fit the music’s polite character and perfectionist-oriented arrangements. To loosen things, Walsh offered the quirky “Life’s Been Good” and talk box-accompanied “Rocky Mountain Way” from his solo career. Per usual, the  whir and whine of his reedy voice ranked a distant second to his bluesy guitar licks.

Deacon Frey stepped into his father’s shoes on the windswept “Take It Easy” and relaxed “Peaceful Easy Feeling.” He sang with sturdiness, clarity  and purpose, but fared better as a harmony vocalist and rhythm guitarist — duties that dissolved the obvious timbral differences between him and his dad. Schmit turned in the evening’s only threadbare lead vocal on the adult-contemporary ballad “I Can’t Tell You Why” whose title ironically served as the answer to the question of how the track entered into the set over superior fare such as “The Long Run,” “Victim of Love” or “Best of My Love.”

Indeed, if the Eagles imparted a lesson for younger generations of bands on Friday, it concerned the importance of elevating songs above personal interests or skills. Granted, Walsh impressed with a fiery guitar solo on an extended reading of “In the City” and Henley kept steady time behind the drum kit while pushing his voice into falsetto regions. Neither called attention to themselves or showed up their mates.

Rather, the group’s successes drew on a collective principle that stressed less “me,” more “us.” Like the Eagles themselves, an analog concept in a digital world.

Tokyo Police Club Announce Farewell Tour Dates and Share Final Songs: Listen

By Matthew Strauss

Tokyo Police Club

In January, Tokyo Police Club announced that they’d be breaking up after a farewell tour. The Canadian band has now shared the details of the tour, which culminates with four shows at Toronto’s History. See the group’s tour dates below.

Tokyo Police Club have also shared their final two songs, which they recorded with producer Jesse Turnbull at Toronto’s Taurus Recording . Below, listen to “ Just a Scratch ” and “ Catch Me If You Can .”

Vocalist and bassist Dave Monks, guitarist and keyboardist Graham Wright, drummer Greg Alsop, and guitarist Josh Hook formed Tokyo Police Club in Ontario in the mid-2000s. After gaining some attention with EPs like A Lesson in Crime and Smith , the band released its first full-length album, Elephant Shell , in 2008. Three more studio albums—2010’s Champ ; 2014’s Forcefield ; and 2018’s TPC — followed.

“We have been so fortunate and privileged to have been able to share our music but even more to have had personal moments shared with us—from graduations to birthdays and onstage proposals,” Josh Hook said in a statement on the impending farewell tour. “To still see the same familiar faces who have been coming out since the beginning of our touring days and to be connected with so many people through music over almost 20 years of life is truly an honour. This final tour will be the best retirement party anyone could ask for. Thank you so much for being with us on this wild ride.”
