Applicants who have traveled to Canada in the last 10 years or hold a valid US non-immigrant visa are considered for CAN+ expedited program. If qualified, some additional documentation is not required and the application is processed within 2-5 working days.
At the beginning of your application, you will be asked questions specific to previous travel to Canada and the United States to determine your eligibility. You will be asked to upload less documentation if you are determined as eligible.
Even though you qualify for the CAN+ expedited program, your application may take several days to process. There are many factors involved. So do not count on the CAN+ program. Instead, follow the current processing times and apply for Canada visitor visa well in advance.
Canada tourist visa fee
Canada tourist visa fee is $100 CAD. The fee must be paid using a credit or debit card in CAD only. Since the fee is in CAD, your bank may charge a foreign transaction fee.
Biometric procedure
Biometrics are mandatory for all Canada tourist visa applicants. Your fingerprints are scanned and your photograph is taken during the biometric appointment.
NOTE Biometrics are valid for 10 years. If you have given your biometrics in the last 10 years as part of a Canada visitor, work or study visa, you are NOT REQUIRED to give your biometrics again.
You can use the Biometric Validity Tool on the IRCC website to check if your biometrics are still valid.
If your biometrics are still valid, you do not need to pay the biometric fee and do not need to give biometrics.
The following are the steps for biometrics.
STEP 1: Pay your biometric fee
The biometric fee for Canada tourist visa is $85 CAD. The fee must be paid using a credit or debit card in CAD only.
You can pay the biometric fee when you submit your visa application or at a later time. It’s highly recommended to pay your biometric fee when you submit your visa application. Paying later will delay your biometrics and eventually your visa process.
STEP 2: Receive biometric instruction letter within 24 hours
If you have paid your biometric fee when submitting your visa application, you will receive your biometric instruction letter within 24 hours of application submission.
STEP 3: Schedule biometric appointment at your nearest VAC
After you receive your biometric instruction letter, you will have 30 days to give your biometrics. Failing to give biometrics within 30 days will result in visa refusal.
Follow the instructions in your biometric instruction letter and schedule a biometric appointment at your nearest Visa Application Center (VAC) or Application Support Center (ASC) .
Once you schedule your biometric appointment, you will receive a biometric appointment confirmation letter from VAC or ASC.
If you have temporary injuries on your fingers and/or your face, you must wait to give your biometrics. You should contact IRCC customer support to request additional time for your biometrics appointment.
If you have permanent injuries on your fingers and/or face, you can continue with your biometrics appointment. The staff at VAC can scan as many fingers as possible and take your photograph.
STEP 4: Gather documents for biometric appointment
Print your biometric instruction letter and biometric appointment confirmation. Some VACs require a consent form. If your VAC requires one, you will see instructions about it in your biometric appointment confirmation.
STEP 4: Appear in-person at the VAC on your appointment day
On your appointment day, carry the following documents
- Biometric instruction letter
- Biometric appointment confirmation
- Consent form (if required)
Your fingerprints will be scanned and your photo will be taken. To avoid any issues with your fingerprint or photo, follow the below instructions.
- Make sure your 10 fingers are free of any temporary injuries, cuts and cracks
- Make sure your 10 fingers are free of paint, oil, grease, etc.

Travellers Visitors to Canada
October 1, 2022 : covid-19 emergency border measures ended.
Refer to COVID-19: Travel, testing and borders for details.
Have proper identification
You must carry proper identification for yourself and any children travelling with you to help confirm your legal right or authorization to enter Canada when you arrive.
All visitors arriving from or transiting through the United States should visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website for information concerning the requirements to enter, transit through, or return to the United States.
Identification requirements for U.S. citizens and permanent residents
If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you must carry proof of citizenship such as a passport, birth certificate, a certificate of citizenship or naturalization, a U.S. Permanent Resident Card, or a Certificate of Indian Status along with photo identification. If you are a U.S. permanent resident, ensure you carry proof of your status such as a U.S. Permanent Resident Card.
For members of a Trusted Traveller program
U.s. citizens.
U.S. citizens who are members of the NEXUS program can use their membership card as proof of identification and citizenship when entering Canada by land, air or water. This applies when you are using either conventional or NEXUS-only lanes. U.S. citizens who are members of FAST may use their membership card when entering Canada by land or water only. When travelling by air, FAST cards will only be accepted as proof of identification when you are travelling to Canada from the U.S.
U.S. permanent residents
NEXUS and FAST members who are permanent residents of the U.S. must still travel with a passport and proof of permanent residence. You may be asked to present these documents to the Border Services Officer ( BSO ) when you arrive at the border.
No matter your mode of travel, we recommend you carry a valid passport for all travel abroad, including visits to Canada from the United States. A passport may be required by your airline or other transportation authority, since it is the only universally-accepted, identification document.
Identification requirements for international visitors
All international travellers must carry acceptable identification and a valid visa (if necessary) when entering Canada. A passport is recommended because it is the only reliable and universally-accepted travel and identification document for the purpose of international travel.
Electronic Travel Authorization
Visa-exempt foreign nationals need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to or transit through Canada. Exceptions include U.S. citizens, U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents (USLPR) and travellers with a valid Canadian visa. Canadian citizens, including dual citizens , and Canadian permanent residents cannot apply for an eTA.
Certain low-risk foreign nationals from select visa-required countries may also travel to or through Canada by air using an eTA through the eTA expansion program .
Foreign nationals from select visa-required countries may also travel to or through Canada by air using an eTA, if eligible .
Be prepared: Apply for an eTA before you book your flight to Canada. Most applicants get approved within minutes. However, some applications can take several days to process so don’t wait until the last minute. Get help if you have questions before, during or after you apply.
Fake websites
Travellers who apply for an eTA are advised to be cautious in all dealings with companies that claim to offer help in getting an eTA. These companies are not operating on behalf of the Government of Canada. Many have established websites that charge a fee to provide information and submit eTA applications.
This Government of Canada website is the official place to apply for an eTA .
Travelling with minors
BSOs watch for missing persons , and may ask detailed questions about any minors travelling with you.
Visit the Children and travel page for more information about travelling abroad with minors.
What you can bring with you
As a visitor, you can bring certain goods into Canada for your own use as personal baggage. Personal baggage includes clothing, camping and sports equipment, cameras and personal computers. This also includes your mode of transportation, including vehicles, private boats and aircraft.
You must declare all goods when you arrive at the first CBSA port of entry. Our BSO s check goods you are bringing in or taking out of Canada to verify what you have declared. If you declare goods when you arrive and take them back with you when you leave, you will not have to pay any duty or taxes. These goods cannot be:
- used by a resident of Canada;
- used on behalf of a business based in Canada;
- given as a gift to a Canadian resident; or
- disposed of or left behind in Canada.
The BSO may ask you to leave a security deposit for your goods. Your deposit will be refunded when you leave Canada with the goods. If this happens, you will be issued a Temporary Admission Permit. We will keep a copy and give you one for your records. When you leave Canada, bring your goods and your copy of the Temporary Admission Permit, to the BSO . You will get a receipt and your security deposit will be refunded by mail.
Making your declaration
Every traveller entering Canada must report to a border services officer and answer all their questions truthfully. Travellers must also report goods they are bringing with them, including food, plant and animal products.
To ensure a smooth border crossing, have all required identification and travel documents in hand. Be ready to make a full and accurate declaration, including the amount of goods in Canadian dollars you are bringing with you.
If you arrive by land, follow the signs to the first checkpoint. A border services officer will check your identification and other travel documents and you will answer their questions.
If you arrive by private boat, go directly to a designated marine telephone reporting site and call the Telephone Reporting Centre ( TRC ) at 1-888-226-7277 to get clearance. For more information, visit the Private boaters page.
If you arrive at one of Canada's main airports , you can complete your customs and immigration declaration your before arrival with Advance Declaration.
At the airport kiosk or eGate, you will scan your travel document and verify your identity. The device will print your declaration and you will bring it to a border services officer.
If you arrive at a smaller Canadian airport, without a kiosk or eGate, you must fill out a paper E-311 CBSA Declaration Card prior to arrival and present it to a border services officer.
Use Advance Declaration and save time!
Submit your customs and immigration information with Advance Declaration up to 72 hours before you arrive in Canada using your smart phone or your computer. When you use Advance Declaration, you can access express lanes in the arrivals hall. Data shows that it’s up to 50% faster at the airport kiosk or eGate.
Instructions on how to complete the card are attached to the form. You can list up to four people living at the same residence on one card. If there are more than four people living at your address use one additional card for each additional group of four or fewer people. Once the cards are complete you can detach and discard the instructions. Do not fold the card.
Be sure to keep the card handy along with your identification and other travel documents. You will be asked to show this card to our BSOs several times.
If you have any questions about the card or Canadian regulations, ask the BSO when you arrive.
Referrals for secondary services and inspections
At any point during your interactions with our BSOs at a port of entry, you may be referred to our secondary services and inspections area.
We understand that travellers may feel anxious when crossing the border. Referrals to secondary inspection are a normal part of the cross-border travel process that any visitor to Canada may experience.
Why you may be referred to secondary inspection
You may be referred to secondary inspection for a variety of reasons, for example:
- carrying out a random inspection;
- verifying your declaration or documentation;
- asking you more in-depth questions about yourself or inspecting your goods;
- determining your admissibility to Canada or the admissibility of the goods in your possession;
- having you pay duty and taxes;
- completing or processing paperwork to support your entry or the entry of your goods to Canada.
All travellers are protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms . Referrals are not made on any discriminatory basis, such as race, nationality, religion, age or gender.
What to expect from secondary inspections
If you are referred for Secondary Services or Inspection, an officer may:
- ask you to provide detailed information about your plans while visiting Canada, or the time you spent abroad;
- make further enquiries, check records, or conduct research to verify your declaration;
- confirm the guardianship of children travelling with you;
- process the payment of duty and taxes;
- inspect your luggage, purse or wallet, electronics (including laptops and cell phones), your vehicle and any additional goods you are transporting;
- examine visually your pet or any animals travelling with you;
- ask you to produce evidence of the money you have available to fund your visit to Canada;
- request that you produce receipts to account for expenses you incurred or purchases made abroad; or
- count your cash or travellers cheques, in your presence.
While most travellers we inspect comply with Canadian laws and regulations, we do encounter individuals who are intent on breaking the law and who attempt to avoid detection. That is why the officer may not always answer specific questions about a Secondary Inspection.
Travelling with alcohol and tobacco
Alcoholic beverages.
You are allowed to bring into Canada only one of the following amounts of alcohol and alcoholic beverages free of duty and taxes:
Alcoholic beverages are products that exceed 0.5% alcohol by volume. Certain alcoholic and wine products that do not exceed 0.5% by volume are not considered alcoholic beverages.
You must meet the minimum age of the province or territory where you enter Canada. Minimum ages are established by provincial or territorial authorities: 18 years for Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec and 19 years for the remaining provinces and territories.
The CBSA classifies "cooler" products according to the alcoholic beverage they contain. For example, beer coolers are considered to be beer and wine coolers are considered to be wine.
The quantities of alcoholic beverages you can import must be within the limit set by provincial and territorial liquor control authorities that apply where you will enter Canada. If the amount of alcohol you want to import exceeds your personal exemption, you will be required to pay the duty and taxes as well as any provincial or territorial levies that apply. Contact the appropriate provincial or territorial liquor control authority for more information before you return to Canada.
You must be of legal age in the province of importation. While you are allowed to import more alcoholic beverages than the amounts listed above, you will be responsible for paying duty and taxes on the additional alcoholic beverages you are bringing into Canada.
For more information on bringing alcoholic beverages to Canada, consult the Alcohol and tobacco limits page.
Tobacco products
As a visitor or a temporary resident, you may bring into Canada, free of duty and taxes, all of the following amounts of tobacco products, as long as these items are in your possession when you arrive in Canada:
You can speed up your clearance by having your tobacco products available for inspection when you arrive.
Whether they are stamped or unstamped, if you bring in tobacco products that exceed your personal exemption, you will be required to pay the regular duty and taxes as well as any provincial or territorial levies that apply on the excess amount.
Note: You must be 18 years of age to bring tobacco products into Canada under your personal exemption.
Stamped Tobacco Products – Personal exemption amounts
If you wish to import cigarettes, manufactured tobacco and tobacco sticks duty free as part of your personal exemption, the packages must be stamped " duty paid Canada droit acquitté ". You will find tobacco products sold at duty-free stores marked this way.
Unstamped Tobacco Products – Special duties rate
A special duty rate applies to cigarettes, manufactured tobacco and tobacco sticks that are not stamped " duty paid Canada droit acquitté".
For example, if you claim a carton of 200 cigarettes as part of your personal exemption and it is not stamped " duty paid Canada droit acquitté", you will be assessed at a special duty rate.

For short visits, these quantities may be limited to amounts that are appropriate in respect of the nature, purpose, and duration of the visit.

Certain goods are restricted or prohibited in Canada. To avoid the possibility of penalties, including seizure or prosecution, make sure you have the information you need before attempting to bring items into Canada.
The following are some examples of restricted or prohibited goods:
- Firearms and weapons : You must declare all weapons and firearms at the CBSA port of entry when you enter Canada.
- Food, plants, animals and related products : All food, plants, animals, and related products must be declared. Food can carry disease, such as E. coli. - Explosives, fireworks and ammunition : You must have written authorization and permits to bring explosives, fireworks and certain types of ammunition into Canada.
- Vehicles : Vehicles include any kind of pleasure vehicles such as passenger cars, pickup trucks, snowmobiles and motor homes, as long as you use them for non-commercial purposes. There are many requirements that apply to importing a vehicle .
- Consumer products : Certain consumer products that could pose a danger to the public (e.g., baby walkers, jequirity beans that are often found in art or bead work) are not allowed to be brought into Canada. Canadian residents should be aware of consumer products that have safety requirements in Canada . Many of these safety requirements are stricter than requirements of other countries.
For more information consult the Restricted and Prohibited Goods page.
Travelling with CAN$10,000 or more
If you have currency or monetary instruments equal to or greater than CAN$10,000 (or the equivalent in a foreign currency) in your possession when arriving in or departing from Canada, you must report to the CBSA. Monetary instruments include items such as stocks, bonds, bank drafts, cheques, and travellers' cheques.
This regulation applies to currency and monetary instruments you have on your person, in your baggage and/or in your vehicle.
When you arrive in Canada with CAN$10,000 or more in your possession, you must report it on the CBSA Declaration Card (if one was provided to you), or in the verbal declaration made to a BSO.
When you leave Canada by air with CAN$10,000 or more in your possession, you must report to the CBSA office within the airport, before clearing security or, if leaving by land or boat, report your intent to export to the CBSA at one of our offices.

Travelling with gifts
If you are travelling with gifts, do not wrap them before crossing the border. If a gift is wrapped, a BSO may need to un-wrap the gift to examine the goods you are bringing into Canada.

Canada's Tourist Visa: Your Questions Answered
You may be wondering how you can visit Canada and what procedure you need to follow. Get ready to uncover all the answers as we dive into the details of tourist visas, from eligibility and application procedures to travel tips and restrictions.
What is Canada’s Tourist Visa?
In essence, it allows you to travel to and around Canada for a limited period, typically up to 6 months. It's important to note that while on a tourist visa, engaging in work or study activities is prohibited, aligning with the visa's intended scope and restrictions. Its primary purpose is to enable tourists to experience Canada's wonders and connect with its way of life.
What is the Difference Between a Tourist Visa and an eTA?
When planning a trip to Canada, it's crucial to understand the distinction between a Tourist Visa and an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). These two entry permits serve different purposes and apply to different travelers.
Tourist Visa
A Tourist Visa, also known as a Visitor Visa, is a traditional visa that allows foreign nationals to enter Canada for a temporary stay, typically up to six months. It's a document placed in your passport and is obtained through a Canadian consulate or embassy. Tourist Visas are typically required for citizens of countries that are not visa-exempt or eligible for an eTA.
eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)
An eTA, on the other hand, is an electronic entry requirement designed for visa-exempt foreign nationals who are traveling to Canada by air. It's a simpler and faster way to gain entry clearance than a full-fledged visa. The eTA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It's crucial to note that the eTA is only applicable if you're flying to Canada; if you're arriving by land or sea, you won't need an eTA.

Can I enter Canada with a US Visa?
Thinking about visiting Canada on your trip to the United States? If you're wondering whether you can visit Canada with the U.S.Visa, such as a B1/B2 Visa, the short answer is no. However, there are other options to enable you to visit this beautiful country.
While Canada and the United States share the longest international border, they have distinct immigration systems. Knowing how these rules connect is super important when considering visiting both countries.
Whether you hold a tourist, business, student, or work visa, we’ll help you by explaining the possibilities and limitations of crossing the Canadian border with your US Visa , in this article.
Is it possible to travel to Canada with a US Visa?
No, most travelers can’t visit Canada with only a US Visa . Depending on your nationality, you might need other documents like the Canadian eTA or Canada Visitor Visa .
On the other hand, citizens of the United States, including lawful permanent residents, are visa-exempt under the Canadian visa waiver program , so they don’t need a visa to travel to Canada . Remember that you may still need to complete the Advance CBSA Declaration , a simple customs registration form, before you enter the country.
Canadian immigration policies to enter from the United States
Canadian immigration policies are known for being easy to understand and flexible, even with foreign citizens looking for job opportunities.
However, it’s essential always to do your research to avoid issues before visiting the country. The last thing you want is to be denied entry due to having the wrong travel document for your travel purposes.
Here's an overview of key aspects of Canadian immigration policies for those holding a US Visa:
Tourist Visa: If you have a US Tourist Visa (B1/B2 Visa) , you might still need to apply for a Canadian Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or Visitor Visa (TRV) to enter the country, depending on your country of citizenship. The eTA is usually the option for travelers from visa-exempt countries, while a TRV is required for most others.
Work Visa: If you hold a US Work Visa , such as an H1B or L1 visa , and you have a job offer or business-related reason to visit Canada, you may be able to enter with specific documentation and permissions. If you’re only attending meetings, you might still need a valid Canadian Visitor Visa .
Student Visa: Students with valid US student visas (F1 or M1) still need to check if they need a Visitor Visa or eTA to enter Canada.
Other visas: Different rules apply to other types of US visas, such as exchange visitor visas (J1) , diplomatic visas (A) , or temporary worker visas (H-2) .
In all cases, you should carefully plan your trip and meet Canada's entry requirements, including having a valid passport.
What US Visa holders should know to transit through Canada
Transiting through Canada as a US Visa holder requires careful planning and understanding of the rules and requirements. Let’s take a look at some key points that you should be aware of when transiting through Canada:
- Visa requirements: Depending on the nationality, you may need a Canadian visa for transit ( Valid Visitor in Transit Visa - TRV ) to pass through Canada, even if you’re not staying in the country.
- Direct transit vs. connecting flights: If you’re taking a connecting flight through a Canadian airport to a third country (e.g., United States to Europe via Canada), you may be eligible for a transit without a visa ( TWOV ) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead of a full transit visa. This typically applies to travelers with a US Visa.
Transiting through Canada can be smooth if you have the necessary visas and documentation in order. It's crucial to research the specific requirements for your nationality and travel itinerary well in advance to avoid any unexpected delays or issues during your transit.
Is there any US Visa type that allows entry to Canada?
No specific type of US Visa automatically allows entry into Canada. As mentioned before, each country maintains its own immigration and entry requirements. Therefore, Canadian immigration authorities assess travelers independently of U.S. Visa status.
While having a US Visa can be beneficial and may demonstrate qualifications or travel history, it doesn’t exempt you from meeting Canada's entry requirements .
How do I check if I need a visa to visit Canada?
Find out if you require a visa or eTA for Canada by using our Visa Tool and entering your country of origin. Be sure to select Canada as your desired destination for recommendations on the next steps.
Visa requirements to travel to Canada can vary based on factors such as your nationality, the purpose of your visit, and the length of your stay. Additionally, visa requirements can change, so it's a good idea to check this information well before your planned travel dates.

Canada Tourist Visa: Online Visa Application and Document Requirements
Last Updated : Sep 4, 2023
Atlys in the news
I have dreamed of visiting a beautiful country known as Canada for a long time. But, unfortunately, my passport does not allow me to enjoy visa-free travel to Canada. You see, because I'm an Indian citizen, I need to apply for a visa to enter Canada, specifically the Canada Tourist Visa, also known as the Canada Visitors Visa.
For this reason, I have decided to share my Canada tourist Visa application with you. I'll guide you through the entire process and add relevant screenshots you can use to reference when applying for your own Canada tourist Visa to make your process so much easier.
General Visa Information About The Canada Tourist Visa
Before I walk you through the process of getting your next Canada Tourist Visa, I'll briefly talk about the general visa information you need to consider. These will include information in regards to:
What Is The Canada Tourist Visa?
Who is eligible for a canada tourist visa, what types of canada visas are available for tourism, what are the canada visit visa fees.
The Canada Tourist Visa, also known as a Canadian visitor visa or temporary resident visa (TRV), allows you to enter Canada for tourism. Typically, your Canada Tourist Visa will be attached to your passport (or valid travel document.) This document states that you meet the minimum requirements to enter Canada legally.
Additionally, citizens of specific countries can also apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to travel to Canada. If you are unsure whether you would need to get a Canadian visa or not, you can check your eligibility on the Canadian Immigrations website.
Before starting your visa application, you'll need to check if you are eligible for a Canada Visa . When you click the link, it will redirect you to the Canadian Government's official webpage. Here you'll be asked a few questions regarding COVID-19, your nationality, and the purpose of your intended trip.
Once you've completed the short questionnaire, you'll receive a message that looks something like this:
This message indicates that you're eligible to apply for a Canada Visa. However, it's worth mentioning that this does not guarantee a successful visa application.
Keep in mind that border authorities at Canada's port of entry always have the right to deny you entry into Canada (even if you've got a Canada Visa).
If you're eligible for a Canada Visa, you'll need to check what type of visa you'll need , which can be found on the government of Canada's official website. The type of visa you need depends on your nationality and the purpose of your trip . In the case of tourism, the entry visa most people will need is the Canada Visitors Visa/Tourist Visa or the Canadian Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).
For US Citizens
If you're a US Citizen, you don't need to apply for any type of visa to enter Canada. As long as you meet the basic requirements, you may enter Canada with a valid US passport for up to 6 months.
For US Green Card Holders
If you're a US Green Card Holder, you don't have to apply for a Canada Tourist Visa. However, you'll need to apply for the Canadian ETA, which will grant you entry to Canada for up to 6 months.
If You' Don't Fall Under One Of The Categories Mentioned Above (like me)
I'll quickly walk you through determining what type of visa you need when you plan to visit Canada. Similar to the eligibility check, you'll need to answer a few questions that will determine the type of Canada Visa you need . Once you click the provided link, you'll be redirected to the following page:
Here, you're required to answer a few questions surrounding your nationality/home country and the purpose of your trip. After answering all the questions, you'll be redirected to a new page that tells you what Canada Visa you need.
For the purpose of this post, I only discuss the Canada Visitor Visa and the process surrounding this type of visa.
For your Canada Tourist Visa, or Visitors Visa, you can expect to pay the following amounts:
Canada Visa application fee - $78.18 USD or $100 CAD
Biometric fee - $66.45 USD or $85 CAD
These are the Canada tourist visa fees I paid when I first applied for my Canada Visa. Keep in mind that the Canada tourist visa fees are subject to change and may not be the same for you. Also, at the end of the visa application process, you'll need to submit your passport via post. To do this, you'll need to purchase the appropriate shipping labels , which cost around $90.
What Are The Documents Required For Canada Tourist Visa?
The list of documents that you'll need to apply for a Canada visa online is not very long. However, you must start gathering all the required documents soon as you know of your travel plans. Some of the documents that you will need are:
Canada visa application form (IMM5257)
A valid passport and copies of the front and back of the passport
Copies of your old passport and copies of entry/exit stamp
Passport-sized digital photos
Proof of means of financial support such as bank statements and proof of bank account
Letter describing the purpose of travel
Travel itinerary such as proof of accommodation, flight tickets, or event you will be visiting
Proof of vaccination for covid
ArriveCAN receipt electronic or on paper upon reaching Canada
Police clearance certificate
Medical examination certificate
If you are applying for the Canada visitor visa on paper, you can find the additional documents or a checklist here .
Remember that depending on the type of visa you apply for, the list of required documents will change. Hence, you might need to add supporting documents to the above-mentioned list in specific cases.

Ok, now you know the basics about the Canada Tourist Visa. Now you need to understand the process to apply for a Canada tourist visa online. To apply for a Canada tourist visa online might seem like a difficult process at first. Still, if you follow my guide, you should complete it easily.
I'll divide the How-To process into steps and add additional screenshots for your convenience. Be sure to bookmark this page to quickly return to it when you start your own application process.
In this How-To section, you'll find the following information:
Step 1 - Complete The Canada Tourist Visa Application Form
Step 2 - the required documents for your canada tourist visa, step 3 - schedule your biometrics appointment, step 4 - attend your biometrics appointment.
Step 5- Submit Your Original Passport
Step 6 - Get Your Shipping Labels
First, we'll look at the Canada Tourist Visa Online Application Form . Phew what a mouth full...
I recommend using the clickable links above to navigate this section. To apply for the Canada visa application online process can take a while, and there are a lot of complicated steps you need to take. Therefore, I'll be providing an extremely detailed guide you can follow. Also, I'll add multiple screenshots for your convenience.
For the Canada Visitors Visa, you'll need to start the Canada visa application online . As soon as you click the link, you'll be redirected to the official government page.
Here you must select Option 1: GCKey . After selecting Option 1: GCKey, you'll see the following:
You'll need to sign up and create an account before starting the application. The sign-up process is pretty straightforward, but I'll list what you can expect:
Accept the terms and conditions
Create your username, which must be between 8 - 16 characters.
Create a unique password
Finally, you'll need to create your recovery questions, answers, and hints. Ensure that you remember the answers you enter. You may need to give the same answers later in the application process (for security purposes).
When I applied for my Canada Visa, I struggled to log into my account. The government page kept redirecting me to another page that had nothing to do with my application. After a lot of frustration, I finally found a work-around to this problem. All you need to do is go to your browser settings and clear your search history and return to the page. After doing this, the page should work correctly, and you'll be able to log in.
After logging in to your account, you're again required to accept the Terms and Conditions. After doing this, you'll start creating your account. For this part, expect to see the following page:
After creating an account, you'll need to set up your own security questions. This can be anything you like. I used my favorite animal, food, drink, and so on.
After setting up your security questions and answers, you can click continue. Next, you'll see this page:
At first, this might look very confusing. However, don't worry too much about everything you see. The important part is finding the title that says "Start an Application" . Once here, select "Apply to come to Canada" .
Now, you'll find a new page that asks you to enter your "personal reference code." In most cases, you don't have this. Not to worry, all you need to do is scroll a bit down and select "Visitors visa, study and/or work permit" under the heading "I do not have a personal reference code"
Next, you'll need to determine if you're eligible for the Canada Tourist Visa you're applying for. You can expect the following questions:
What would you like to do in Canada? (Select visit .)
How long are you planning to stay in Canada? (Select duration. For me, it was less than 6 months )
Select the code that matches your passport. (For example, IND for India )
What is your current country/territory of residence? If you are presently in Canada, you should select Canada.
Do you have a family member who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and is 18 years or older? (If you select yes, you'll need to provide relevant information like name, surname, and so on)
What is your date of birth?
Have you lived in Canada as a permanent resident or landed immigrant? (Yes/No)
Are you a lawful permanent resident of the United States with a valid U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) number? (If yes, you must provide relevant information.)
What is your marital status?
What is your province of destination? If visiting multiple provinces, select the one where you will be spending most of your time.
Finally, after completing all these questions, you'll be informed about the type of visa you need to apply for.
Next, you'll be asked more questions. However, the answers you provide will determine the required documents you'll need to submit for your visa application. I'll add screenshots that you can reference for the questions asked.
After answering all the questions, you'll have the option to review and edit any questions. So, if you see you made a mistake or add incorrect information, ensure that you correct those mistakes. Remember, a faulty application form could lead to your visa being denied.
Finally, you can select continue and proceed with your visa application. Once you click continue, you'll be greeted by a new page, which provides some general information for the next step of your application.
As I previously mentioned, the answers you gave during the first step will determine the documents you'll need to submit for your application. The government website creates a nice and neat checklist for you. Then, all you need to do is upload the documents from that checklist. For example, for my Canada Tourist visa application, I had to submit the following documents:
These documents included:
1. Visitor Visa Application (Temporary Resident Visa) Made Outside Canada (IMM 5257)
To fill out the application form, you'll need to click on the link and download the form. When you open the link, you'll see a document page that says "Please wait" .
From here, you'll need to download the document to your device and download adobe reader afterward .
After downloading the adobe reader, you can open the downloaded application form within Adobe Reader. This is where you need to fill out your application.
While filling out your application form, ensure that the information you provide is correct, accurate, and the same as the information you previously used. You won't be able to submit your visa application form if the information you provide on the form differs from the info you provided during the account creation process.
After completing the form, you'll find a "Validate" button on the bottom of the form. As soon as you click the button, your information will be checked and validated.
It's worth mentioning that if you make a mistake, you can always edit the information you provided. Nevertheless, if you edit any fields, you'll need to validate your application again .
Quick note: Remember to print out your application form and sign the last page. Keep your application form with you at all times. The Canadian Embassy/Canadian Consulate may require it from you in the future (not always the case).
When your application form has been validated, unique barcodes will be generated. These barcodes will be scanned by authorities/officials during the review process.
Next, you need to save your form. You can now go back to the website and upload your application. Note that you might notice the "please wait" document (as previously mentioned). Don't worry. The Embassy won't see this document. Instead, they will receive the application you just completed.
Quick note: If the information on the application doesn't match the information you provided in the previous questionnaire, you won't be able to upload your application form. Luckily, the website will tell you what information doesn't match. In this case, you'll need to go back to your application, edit the information, save it, and upload it again.
2. A Valid Passport
You'll need to upload a copy of your valid passport. When uploading your passport, it must show your date of birth , country of origin , and any pages with previous visas/stamps/markings .
3. Proof Of Sufficient Funds
When visiting Canada, you must prove that you have the financial means to support yourself during your visit. The exact required amount is not specified. Nonetheless, expect to have around $2000 CAD for every 30 days you plan to stay. Documents you can submit to prove you have sufficient funds include recent bank statements, pay stubs, an employment letter, and so on.
4. A Digital Photo
Your photo must be in color. Ensure that you're centered, and the image captures a full front view of the head and the tops of the shoulders.
5. Purpose of Travel
When applying for your Canada Tourist Visa, you'll need to enter the purpose of your planned trip. Also, you'll need to provide documents that support the reason for your trip. These documents can include a flight ticket , accommodation , and a travel itinerary .
6. Family Information Form (IMM5645) Form
Like the application form, you'll need to download the family information form and complete it through adobe reader. The form is pretty straightforward to fill out and mainly asks for family details like name, surname, and date of birth. After filling out the form, save it, and upload it.
You now know about the required supporting documents for your visa application form. After uploading your documents, you'll notice another title that says "Optional Documents" .
These documents are only optional. Therefore you don't need to upload these if you don't want to. If you don't upload these documents, it doesn't mean your application will be rejected. Your application can still be successful.
You're almost finished with the application process! Just a quick note - the required documents depend on the information you provided during the initial account creation process. Meaning that the documents you need to submit might look different from the documents I had to submit.
Step 3 - Pay The Canada Tourist Visa Application Fee
After completing steps 1 and 2, you need to pay the visa application fee . Once you click next, you'll be redirected to a new page. Here you'll find details regarding the documents you've submitted and the payments you need to make.
Before you can make a payment, you'll need to agree to the terms, provide your signature (in the form of your name and surname), and answer a security question.
Quick note: During the payment part of the application, you won't be able to make any edits to your visa application.
After signing the form, you'll be redirected to the card payment page. There, you must select the payment method of your choice and enter your payment details.
You'll receive a payment confirmation via email when you've paid the visa fee. Furthermore, you can return to the official government web page , sign back in, and click "full application status" to check your status from there. However, it's recommended that you regularly check your emails for confirmation from the Embassy.
Once you navigate to your application status, you should scroll down to the bottom of the page. There you'll find a heading that says "Message about your application." Under this heading, you'll find clickable links. So the first 2 notifications you should receive are:
Confirmation of Online Application Transmission
This is a confirmation letter that you receive from the Embassy that confirms you've made a payment for your Canada Tourist Visa application. Here you also find your payment receipt number.
Submission Confirmation
On the same date you received the "Confirmation of Online Application Transmission" , you'll also receive a submission confirmation . The submission confirmation is basically a message from the Embassy that says they have received your visa application. Within this document/message, you can also find your visa application number (For me, this was a letter and 9 digits). Furthermore, you'll find other relevant information about your visa application, like the processing time.
When you apply for your Canada Tourist Visa, one visa requirement is to have your biometric information collected by the Embassy. You'll be notified about your biometrics information in 2 - 5 business days (after receiving your submission confirmation).
When you receive your biometrics instruction letter you scroll down, and you should see something like this:
Please take note of your IRCC number, as shown above.
Once you receive this message, you have 30 days to schedule your biometrics appointment at the Visa Centre of your choice. Here's how to schedule your appointment:
First, you need to head over to this website .
Select make an appointment , and enter your zip code.
As soon as you enter a zip code, you'll see the visa office closest to you. Note down the Embassy/Visa Application Centre address and select "see available appointments appointment."
Here, you'll see all the available appointments. Please note down the date of the appointment.
After selecting an appointment date and time, you'll be redirected to a new page where you must enter your IRCC number.
You have then successfully scheduled your appointment.
Quick note: It's worth mentioning that there aren't a lot of appointment slots available. This means you may only get an appointment 15 - 20 days from the day you schedule your appointment. Therefore, I highly recommend you schedule your appointment immediately after getting your biometrics letter. Don't wait! Remember, you only have 30 days to submit your biometrics information.
You now need to travel to attend your biometrics appointment. Ensure that you bring along your Biometrics Instruction letter. Your unique barcode will be scanned, and your biometric information will be collected. Usually, this includes a digital photo and your fingerprints.
After attending your appointment, you'll receive another confirmation notification that indicates the Embassy or center has received your biometrics. This is called the Correspondence Letter
Step 5 - Submit Your Original Passport
After a few days (usually 5 - 10 business days), you'll receive another notification that says "Original Passport Request." If you receive this letter/confirmation, you can assume that your visa application is successful. After that, you're required to submit your passport for your new visa.
Things to remember about your passport:
It must be in good condition
It must not be close to its expiry date
It must have at least 1 visa page available for your visa
As soon as you receive this letter, you only have 30 days to submit your passport.
To submit your passport, you'll need to send it via mail. For this, you'll need to obtain the correct shipping labels. Next, I'll explain how you can get your shipping labels.
Unfortunately, you can't get shipping labels from anywhere. The shipping labels you require are very specific and can only be requested at VFS. Here's how you can get it:
1. First, you need to email VFS and request the shipping labels.
2. VFS will provide an excel template you need to fill out.
3. Once you fill out the excel template - VFS will send an invoice within 3 business days. Please be aware that VFS may take longer to send the invoice and the labels (I waited 15 days). Since I only had 30 days, the label part took almost 15 days to get.
4. You'll need to pay the appropriate fee for your shipping labels. VFS typically charges around $90 for this service. However, this amount is subject to change.
Once you receive your shipping labels, you can attach them to your parcel (including your passport) and send them to the appropriate address. The specific address is the one you noted down during step 3 .
Congratulations! You're finally finished with the Canada Tourist Visa application process. After that, all you need to do is wait for your passport to be returned to you. Afterward, you can travel to Canada and enjoy your next exciting trip.
What Is The Canada Tourist Visa Processing Time?
The Canada Tourist Visa processing time usually can take between 1 - 3 months, depending on many factors. The Canada visitor visa processing time starts when your submitted visa application is received by the visa office and ends when your application is approved. However, let us look at it in more detail:
Why Is The Canada Visit Visa Processing Time So Long?
What Is The Canada Tourist Visa Processing Time After Biometrics?
Why Is My Canada Visa Application Not Approved Yet?
How to check the canada visa processing time, how to track the canada tourist visa.
However, keep in mind that the processing time for each application is different, and it might take longer in some cases. For example, the Canada visa processing time can be delayed by:
A sudden demand for Canadian Visas or Canada Tourist Visas
Visa policy changes
Travel restrictions implemented due to COVID-19
A lack of available biometrics appointment slots ( more about this later )
Incorrect documents, application information, and so on.
For the reasons I've mentioned above, I highly recommend that you start your visa application at least 3 months before you intend to depart for Canada.
What Is The Canada Tourist Visa Processing Time After Biometrics?
The entire Canada visa application can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to process. However, once you have submitted your biometric information, the visa application can take up to 30 days to process, depending on the specific visa application. After which, your visa is approved, and you will receive your stickers visa on your passport.
It is also important to understand that your actual visa processing time starts when you provide your biometric information at the visa office. Hence the sooner you give your biometrics, the soon your visa will be issued.
The first this you must do is pay your biometric fee at the same time you submit your Canada visa application. This will ensure that you receive your instruction letter which will tell you about the official biometrics collection point in your country. After that, you will have 30 days to submit your biometrics. After you have submitted your biometrics, the visa office will let you know how long your Canada visa processing time will be.
The Canada visa processing time will differ for each individual. One of the reasons why your Canada visa application is not approved could be:
The type of application submitted
If the application is complete
How quickly does the visa office process applications that have already been received
How easily the visa office can verify your information
How long does the visa office take to respond to any requests or concerns
And many other factors
You can check the visa processing time on the IRCC website . Also, note that this is an estimated time that it will take in the country you are applying from.
You can only check the status of your Canada visa application if you have sponsored someone such as your spouse, child, or a dependent. You will have to visit the IRCC Status Tracker website and create your account.
You can take the same steps to check the visa status even if you have applied for your visa on paper. Additionally, those who have applied for an eTA can check the status of their online Canada visa application online .
My Biggest Tip For Your Canada Tourist Visa
My biggest tip is to constantly check your notification center on the official website . This is where you'll find all the essential information about your visa application. Also, each notification/letter will give you clear instructions on what to do next. Furthermore, I recommend that you regularly check your emails too. Usually, you'll receive updates about your visa application via email.
That's about it. Good luck with your next Canada Visa application.

Updated travel information for Mexican citizens coming to Canada
From: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada
News release
Canada and Mexico have maintained a deep, positive and constructive diplomatic partnership over the past 80 years. We have worked to ensure North America is the world’s most competitive economic region and maintain strong bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation. To support travel and people-to-people connections between Canada and Mexico, while also preserving the integrity of our immigration system, the Government of Canada is adjusting its travel requirements for Mexican citizens.
February 29, 2024, 8:30 a.m. – Ottawa – Canada and Mexico have maintained a deep, positive and constructive diplomatic partnership over the past 80 years.
As of February 29, 2024, at 11:30 p.m. Eastern time, Mexican citizens who hold a valid US non-immigrant visa or have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years and are travelling by air on a Mexican passport will be able to apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA). With the high number of Mexican citizens currently holding US visas, the majority will continue to enjoy visa-free travel to Canada. Those who do not meet these conditions will need to apply for a Canadian visitor visa. This responds to an increase in asylum claims made by Mexican citizens that are refused, withdrawn or abandoned. It is an important step to preserve mobility for hundreds of thousands of Mexican citizens, while also ensuring the sound management of our immigration and asylum systems.
The application process for Mexican citizens seeking a work or study permit will not change. Mexican citizens who want to work in Canada will continue to have access to a wide number of existing labour pathways, including the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the International Mobility Program.
Canada supports ongoing travel, tourism and business with Mexico. We will continue to work with the Government of Mexico to strengthen our regular pathways to immigration, and with our provincial and territorial counterparts to support a system of managed migration as well as to support those in need of protection. Canada is expanding its network of visa application centres in Mexico to better serve these clients. Today’s action will relieve pressure on Canada’s borders, immigration system, housing and social services, while preserving mobility for Mexican citizens who want to come to Canada.
The Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) is a vital example of the mutually beneficial migration that we seek to promote regionally and globally. Canada is ready to work with Mexico to build on this program, through the modernization of a new SAWP bilateral agreement, to offer Mexican workers new opportunities, through the incorporation of year-round primary agriculture and seasonal fish, seafood and primary food processing into the program. This will benefit workers and businesses on both sides of the Canada–Mexico relationship.
Canada is continuously monitoring the impacts of its visa policies for both visa-exempt and visa-required countries, as well as asylum claim trends. These challenges are not limited to one country. Any adjustment to Canada’s travel requirements are made to preserve the integrity and sustainability of our asylum and immigration systems.
More information about these changes, including for people in transit or with upcoming flights, is available on IRCC’s website .
“Mexico is an important partner to Canada. We will continue to welcome Mexican temporary workers, students, visitors and immigrants who bring diverse skills and important contributions to our economy and communities. We strive for balance between the movement of people between our two great countries, and the need to relieve pressure on our immigration system so we can provide protection to those who need it the most.” – The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
Quick facts
Asylum claims made by Mexican citizens reached a record high in 2023 at a time when Canada’s asylum system, housing and social services were already under significant pressure. The majority of these claims (approximately 60%) were either rejected by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, or withdrawn or abandoned by the applicant.
In 2023 alone, asylum claims from Mexican citizens accounted for 17% of all claims made that year from all nationalities around the world. The country’s asylum claim rate has risen significantly since the visa was first lifted in 2016 (from 260 claims in 2016 to 23,995 claims in 2023).
All eTAs issued to Mexican passports before 11:30 p.m. Eastern time on February 29, 2024, will no longer be valid—except for eTAs linked to Mexican passports with a valid Canadian work or study permit. Mexican citizens travelling to Canada without a valid work or study permit will need to apply for a visitor visa or reapply for a new eTA —if they are eligible.
Mexican citizens holding a valid work or study permit can still travel by air to Canada with their existing eTA as long as it remains valid, and they can continue to study or work in Canada based on the validity and conditions of their permit. Mexican visitors who are already in Canada on an eTA can stay for as long as they are authorized (up to six months from the date they arrive in Canada). However, if they plan to leave Canada and wish to return, they must have the proper travel documents (visa or new eTA).
Most approved visa applicants receive multiple-entry visas, which allow them to visit Canada as many times as they want, for up to 10 years, or until their passport expires.
The eTA is a digital travel document that most visa-exempt travellers need in order to travel to or transit through Canada by air. IRCC first began expanding its eTA program to eligible citizens from visa-required countries in 2017. Mexico will now be among 15 countries whose citizens can to fly to Canada on an eTA, instead of a visa, if they meet certain requirements .

Advance travel planning and early visa application are important. If you plan to apply for a nonimmigrant visa to come to the United States as a temporary visitor, please review the current wait time for an interview using the tool below. Not all visa applications can be completed on the day of the interview; please read the information below for more details .
Check the estimated wait time for a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
Note: Please check the individual Embassy or Consulate website to determine if your case is eligible for a waiver of the in-person interview.
Applicants scheduling visa appointments in a location different from their place of residence should check post websites for nonresident wait times.
Select a U.S. Embassy or Consulate:
Global Visa Wait Times
Wait Time for Interview
The estimated wait time to receive a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. embassy or consulate and is based on workload and staffing and can vary from week to week. The information provided is an estimate and does not guarantee the availability of an appointment.
Wait Time for Interview Waiver
Wait times for applicants eligible for Interview Waiver are applicable only for locations where applicants schedule appointments to submit their passport and any required documents to a U.S. embassy or consulate. The wait time estimate does not account for the time required for a consular officer to adjudicate the application nor mailing time of passports or other documents. Refer to the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section where you will apply to determine your eligibility for Interview Waiver and for instructions for submitting a nonimmigrant visa application. Note that applicants must be a national or resident of the country where they are applying to be eligible to apply via Interview Waiver.
Qualifications for an Expedited Interview Appointment
Consular sections overseas may be able to expedite your interview date if there is an urgent, unforeseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency, or school start date. The process to request an expedited nonimmigrant visa interview varies by location. You should refer to the instructions on the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section where you will interview, or on their online appointment scheduling site. You will need to provide proof of the need for an earlier appointment.
In all cases : You must first submit the online visa application form (DS-160), pay the application fee, and schedule the first available interview appointment. Only at this point will a consular section consider your request for an expedited appointment.
Note: Travel for the purpose of attending weddings and graduation ceremonies, assisting pregnant relatives, participating in an annual business/academic/professional conference, or enjoying last-minute tourism does not qualify for expedited appointments. For such travel, please schedule a regular visa appointment well in advance.
These estimates do not include time required for administrative processing, which may affect some applications. When administrative processing is required, the timing will vary based on individual circumstances of each case.
There are only two possible outcomes for U.S. visa applications. The consular officer will either issue or refuse the visa. If a visa applicant has not established that he or she is eligible for a visa, the consular officer must refuse that application. However, some refused visa applications may require further administrative processing. When administrative processing is required, the consular officer will inform the applicant at the end of the interview. The duration of the administrative processing will vary based on the individual circumstances of each case. At the conclusion of the administrative processing period, the consular officer might conclude that an applicant is now qualified for the visa for which he or she applied. The officer may also conclude that the applicant remains ineligible for a visa. Visa applicants are reminded to apply early for their visas, well in advance of the anticipated travel date.
Important Notice: Except in cases of emergency travel (i.e. serious illnesses, injuries, or deaths in your immediate family), before making inquiries about status of administrative processing, applicants should wait at least 180 days from the date of interview or submission of supplemental documents, whichever is later.

Canada bringing back visa requirements for Mexican nationals to curb asylum seekers
Quebec, u.s. governments have been calling for visas to be reinstated.
What Canada's new visa requirements mean for Mexican nationals
Social sharing.
The federal government is reimposing some visa requirements on Mexican nationals visiting Canada, senior government sources tell Radio-Canada and CBC News.
The new rules will take effect on 11:30 p.m. ET on Thursday.
Quebec Premier François Legault has been calling on the federal government to do more to slow the influx of asylum seekers into his province. Last week, he said Ottawa should bring back the visa requirement for Mexican travellers.

"The possibility of entering Canada from Mexico without a visa certainly explains part of the influx of asylum seekers," the premier wrote in a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau .
More than 25,000 Mexicans applied for asylum in Canada last year, making Mexico the top source of asylum claims, according to statistics from the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada . The number of backlogged claims from Mexico currently filed with the board sits at more than 28,000.
The U.S. government also has been asking Ottawa to bring back the visa requirement to curb a sharp increase in illegal crossings from Canada into the United States.

Mexicans currently don't need a visa to travel to Canada, but they do have to obtain visas to enter the U.S. American border officials say some Mexican nationals are using Canada's visa-free rule to fly into the country and then cross illegally into the United States.
The new visa requirement is expected to affect roughly 40 per cent of all Mexican travellers to Canada, a government source told Radio-Canada.
The Conservative government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper imposed a visa requirement on Mexico in 2009 to stem the flow of asylum claims. The Trudeau government relaxed it in 2016 .
Canada's new Mexico visa policies threaten refugees' rights, advocate says
The new rules won't amount to a complete return to the pre-2016 rules. Mexican nationals with certain types of U.S. visas and those coming to Canada on study or work permits won't have to obtain Canadian visas.
Mexican nationals who received valid visas under the previous system at any point within the last ten years won't have to reapply under the new requirements.
The new visas will apply for a ten-year period and will allow a traveller to enter Canada multiple times and stay for up to six months at a time. Customs officers will have discretionary power to limit the duration of the visa or the number of visits, one source said.
The government isn't expected to announce the new visa requirements until Thursday.
But on Wednesday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador accused Canada of attempting to act unilaterally on immigration measures.
"They are in negotiations to reach an agreement so that we can control migratory flows from Canada," he said in Spanish during a press conference.
"We have acted generously with them, with the government of Prime Minister Trudeau, but they were already on the verge of applying unilateral measures."
López Obrador also said he may not attend the next North American Leaders summit — set to take place in Canada — if he feels Canada and the U.S. aren't treating his country fairly.
"If there's no respectful treatment, I won't go," he said.
A source told Radio-Canada that in an effort to ease tensions with the Mexican government over the visa requirements, Ottawa has agreed to expand the number of sectors in which Mexican nationals can work in Canada. Negotiations are ongoing, the source said.
Legault has said asylum seekers are putting heavy pressure on Quebec's social services and finances.
"Asylum seekers have trouble finding a place to live, which contributes to accentuating the housing crisis," the premier said in his letter to Trudeau. "Many end up in homeless shelters, which are overflowing."
He said organizations that help asylum seekers can't keep up with the demand. Legault said the children of asylum seekers are also straining the resources of schools already facing shortages of teachers and space.
Legault's letter said asylum seekers who are waiting for work permits receive financial assistance from Quebec. Last October, he said, roughly 43,200 asylum seekers received $33 million in aid from the province.

- Analysis U.S. Republicans are now warning: Migration from Canada is a problem
Quebec Immigration Minister Christine Fréchette welcomed the news but said Ottawa must still do more.
"It's an important step forward, but it won't solve everything. The number of asylum seekers accepted by Quebec is far too high and our services are beyond capacity," she told reporters Thursday in French.
"The federal government must distribute the asylum seekers across Canada. Quebec bears a disproportionate share of the responsibility for receiving them."
One source told CBC News that domestic issues were the main motivation for the change in policy, but U.S. pressure also played a role. Many migrants were being transported by criminal cartels with the objective of getting them into the U.S., the source said.
U.S. officials have suggested that people who can't get into the U.S. lawfully have an incentive to travel to Canada to try entering illegally. Human smuggling networks are cashing in , moving people who are fleeing poverty and violence in Mexico and using Canada as a pitstop on the way to the U.S.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data shows a spike in migrants entering the U.S. from Canada after Trudeau lifted the visa requirement in December 2016. There were 1,169 apprehensions of Mexicans the year before the requirements were lifted; the number nearly doubled to 2,245 in 2018, a year after the requirements were lifted.
Last year, the CBP recorded 4,868 apprehensions. Nearly 2,000 Mexicans have been apprehended at the Canada-U.S. border in the first four months of this fiscal year.

Those numbers are a tiny fraction of the number of apprehensions along the U.S.-Mexico border — nearly 580,000 last year. But the rise in apprehensions at the Canada-U.S. border was enough for U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to raise the issue during his visit to Ottawa last spring .
"We talk about this issue and many issues that impact the migration of people," Mayorkas said in an interview with CBC News Network's Rosemary Barton Live at the time.
"I think that's a decision that the Canadian officials are going to make," Mayorkas told host Rosemary Barton when asked about the prospect of Ottawa reinstating the visa program.

Canada Restores Visa Requirement for Mexican Visitors
The immigration minister said Mexico had not done enough to address the surge of asylum seekers arriving in Canada.
By Vjosa Isai
Canada announced on Thursday that it would require visas for Mexican nationals to enter the country, a move that comes amid a surge in asylum requests from Mexicans arriving in Canada.
The rule follows months of discussions between the two countries over the rise in the number of Mexicans entering Canada, including repeated attempts by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to address the issue with Mexico’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Some provincial officials say a surge of asylum seekers has strained their resources and their ability to provide social services.
“We needed to give Mexico, because of our friendship, the chance to rectify things,” Marc Miller, Canada’s immigration minister, said at a news conference.
“This clearly was not done,” he added, “so we had to take a decision.”
The visa mandate, which will go into effect Thursday night, had been lifted by Mr. Trudeau in 2016 to boost tourism and as a sign of the close ties between the two countries.
Since then the number of Mexican asylum claims has soared, to roughly 24,000 last year from 260 eight years ago. About 17 percent of all Canadian asylum claims last year were filed by Mexican nationals.
Most asylum claims from Mexico are rejected, withdrawn or abandoned, Mr. Miller said, clogging up an immigration system already facing difficulties trying to cope with a mounting backlog of refugee claims. “It has ripple effects,” he said.
For some Mexicans who can afford plane tickets, flying to Canada has become an alternate route to the United States, allowing them to avoid the smugglers who control the paths to the U.S. southern border.
U.S. immigration officials have recorded a large increase in the number of migrants, including Mexicans, crossing into the United States from Canada, though nowhere near the enormous numbers at the southern border.
“But they are significant,” Mr. Miller said. “And that’s something we have to manage as a partner with the U.S.”
Immigration has become a major issue in the United States ahead of the November election, and the Biden administration has made the tightening of the country’s borders a top political priority.
President Biden and Donald J. Trump, who is almost certain to be his Republican rival for the White House, were both scheduled to appear on Thursday in South Texas to discuss migration.
Mr. López Obrador told reporters on Thursday that his government respected Canada’s decision, but said that Canada could have sought “other alternatives,” without offering specifics.
He also issued a “small, respectful, fraternal reproach” to Mr. Trudeau, though he said that his government’s response would be “to act with prudence, with serenity.”
Not all Mexicans will be required to have a visa to travel to Canada. The rule excludes Mexicans who have had a Canadian visa within the past 10 years, or if they currently have a temporary U.S. visa. Travelers in this category need an electronic travel authorization, which is valid for up to five years.
Canada’s visa decision is the latest step in the country’s effort to address asylum claims made from regular ports of entry, like airports, and from unofficial border crossings.
Canadian officials in January also placed restrictions on foreign students , doubling the savings threshold new applicants must have to qualify for a study permit, after a surge raised concerns about pressures on housing.
After an agreement with the United States, Canada last year closed a popular land border crossing between New York State and Quebec, called Roxham Road , following a spike in migrants entering Canada there.
Some provincial leaders, including François Legault, the premier of Quebec, have criticized the federal government’s response and say it needs to provide more financial help to defray the costs of absorbing thousands of migrants.
About half of Canada’s 290,000 asylum seekers are in Quebec, the province’s immigration minister has said, and Quebec is asking the government for 1 billion Canadian dollars in assistance.

Canada reimposes visa requirement on Mexican nationals
TORONTO — Canada’s government is reimposing the visa requirements on Mexican nationals visiting Canada, the immigration minister announced Thursday.
Quebec’s premier has been urging the Canadian government to slow the influx of immigrants, which he says has been straining resources. The U.S. government also urged Canada to take action as some Mexicans have been crossing illegally into the U.S. from Canada.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller said that the new rules take effect late Thursday.
“We have seen exponential growth in asylum claims particularly from Mexican nationals in the last year,” Miller said.
Miller said Mexico accounted for 17% of all asylum claims received by Canada from around the world, and said most claims from Mexico are either rejected, withdrawn or abandoned, so a change was needed.
“Claims that don’t even have the prospect of success put a pressure on the system and put a pressure on the social supports that these people get,” he said. “It has ripple effects across the system.”
Miller said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau raised this issue with Mexico’s president every time he spoke with him, and said not enough was being done to decrease the numbers.
Trudeau’s government lifted the visa requirement for Mexican visitors in late 2016, removing a major irritant in relations between the two countries.
But Immigration Department data show asylum claims from Mexico have spiked dramatically. In 2015, there were only 110 such claims, but the number jumped to nearly 24,000 last year.
The Quebec government has been calling on Ottawa to reimburse 1 billion Canadian dollars ($740 million) — the amount the province has said it has spent on a growing number of asylum-seekers.
Miller said that Canada’s relationship with the U.S. is also a factor.
“We have seen a number of claimants cross into the United States,” Miller said. “They are nothing compared to what the U.S. is facing with respect to their southern border.”
“But they are significant, and they have increased dramatically in the last year or two,” he said. “And that’s something we have to manage as a partner with the U.S.”
Previously, refugee service providers in Montreal have said that Mexican families are fleeing violence, insecurity and a lack of jobs in Mexico.
Canada only grants asylum to people it believes can’t safely live in any part of their home country because officials are unable or unwilling to provide those conditions.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed regret Thursday for Canada’s decision to reimpose a visa requirement for Mexican citizens.
“They could have looked for other options,” he said during his daily media briefing. He assured that the measure wouldn’t lead Mexico to break off relations with Canada, and added that his administration would look for alternatives.
López Obrador said that he would send Trudeau “a small fraternal reproach,” but stressed the good relationship the two leaders had maintained.
Still, the president said it would be “very difficult” for him to attend the North American Leaders’ Summit scheduled for April in Quebec, because of the election campaigns going on in Mexico and the United States.
Mexico’s Foreign Affairs ministry said in a statement Thursday that the government reserved the right of reciprocity.

TORONTO (AP) — Canada’s government is reimposing some visa requirements on Mexican nationals visiting Canada, an official familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
Quebec’s premier has been urging the federal government to slow the influx of refugees which he says has been straining resources.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak ahead of the Thursday announcement. The official said the new rules will take effect late Thursday and they won’t mean a complete return to pre-2016 rules. Canada’s immigration minister is expected to announce details.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government lifted the visa requirement for Mexican visitors in late 2016, removing a major irritant in relations between the two countries.
But Canadian Immigration Minister Mac Miller has said asylum claims from Mexico have shot up since Canada lifted the visa restriction in 2016. Canada getting rid of visa free travel from Mexico is also expected to reduce the number of illegal crossings of Mexicans into the U.S. from Canada.
In 2023, Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board had 17,490 claims from Mexico, making up 19% of claims referred that year. A year prior, the number was 7,483 making up 12% of claims.
Previously, refugee service providers in Montreal have said that Mexican families are fleeing violence, insecurity and a lack of jobs in Mexico.
Canada only grants asylum to people it believes cannot safely live in any part of their home country because officials are unable or unwilling to provide those conditions.
During his daily press briefing Wednesday morning, Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador suggested Canada was going to announce actions when he took a reporter’s question about potential U.S. tariffs on Mexican steel exports and launched into a rambling complaint about a lack of respect coming from Mexico’s North American neighbors.
The president said that conservative forces in Mexico had been lobbying in the United States and Canada for actions that would reflect poorly on his administration. He mentioned U.S. complaints about fentanyl production in Mexico and assertions by both the U.S. and Canada that Mexico was not doing its part to control immigration flows.
“The immigration issue, it’s Mexico’s fault,” López Obrador mocked. “’We’re going to build a wall and that’s how we’ll solve the problem. We’re going to militarize the border and that’s how we’ll solve the problem.’”
“And now Canada is doing the same, they’re wanting to take measures against Mexico; we really regret it,” López Obrador said. “They’re negotiating to reach an agreement, that we can control the migration flows to Canada, as we always have. And we have acted generously toward them, with the administration of Prime Minister Trudeau, but they were already at the point of imposing unilateral measures, right now, when there are elections in Mexico.”
López Obrador also raised the possibility that he would not attend the North American Leaders’ Summit, scheduled for April in Quebec. “If there isn’t respectful treatment, I don’t participate,” he said.
